You feel so good getting all these different perks and skills to enhance the experience such as wild wasteland if your feeling particularly wacky. The gunplay is solid and you can choose to talk sneak or fight your way in to various places. You can make friends with certain gangs or just blow everyone to pieces. It looks and sounds amazing and I personally think it was one of the best games of 2010. Overall Fallout New Vegas provides a fun experience and I will be playing it for years to come. I'll Give it 9

An extremely fun game. It doesn't quite match the perfection of Fallout 3, but it is very good nonetheless. It is also a great standalone game, which you don't have to have played any other Fallout games to play.

I'll start by saying that for me Fallout New Vegas is the real inheritor of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. The return of factions is one solid evidence. Not to mention the absolutely amazing (atmospherically speaking) Vault locations in the game - and what about the soundtrack? Return of some Mark Morgan dark ambient tunes, which tie the certain locations & characters to the past Fallout games (1 & 2) in a way that truly works. Ok, when it comes to technical side - Fallout New Vegas has its' share of bugs too, but it's so much less buggy than Fallout 3 was (at least in my PC's case) that it almost feels like "where are the bugs?". I've spent closer to 200 hours (and that's not counting Lonesome Road DLC yet) in Fallout New Vegas and experienced perhaps handful of fatal crashes. There are so much things to do and places to see in Fallout New Vegas that if a game could be stated as being "worth the money" - then Fallout New Vegas would be the best example of that. Replay value is very good. Easily the best Fallout game since Fallout 2. Even if it seemingly "does not offer anything new if compared to Fallout 3" - that might be the very initial impression, but take my word; don't let that fool you out. Expand

Also, I don't think the game is linear at all - you are "guided" by the main quest, of course, but that goes for any RPG ever released. At any time you can just stray off the beaten path, get quests that take you to far places and whatnot. The only problem with the game, in my opinion, is that the story is far less "epic": you're not trying to save a Vault, your tribe or discover the fate of your father and then save the world (pretty much). You just wanna kill the guy who tried to kill you, then you start working for a faction for no other reason than you want to. Other than that, the game is excellent, and a must for anyone who liked any of the Fallouts. Expand

Not quite as great as Fallout 3 but then that's because the setting of New Vegas is less interesting to me personally than the ruins of Washington DC. However, it has a fantastic storyline, some interesting refinements and the nice hardcore mode.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. New Vegas is just a stellar improvement on the FO3 formula. The new lands to explore (And conquer for some of us) are a fresh start, though the mostly vault-less land feels a little different than your usual Fallout romp. Still crossing the wastes of Nevada and fighting everything from Powder Gangers to Giant Rad Scorpions to Deathclaws is a blast. The story you follow of the errand boy of Nevada gone wrong is intriguing and leads you through some interesting areas to learn of what happened, and exact revenge on someone who wronged you. The DLC that has come out for the game has been pretty fun. I have the GOTY edition from Steam with all the DLC packs and I've gotta say Old World Blues was a helluva good time. The writing in that DLC pack more than makes up for any frustrating pieces. I love the Fallout Universe and it's always fun to go back and pick it up again and play things out in a different way or order than you did before. Great fun :) Expand

I can undestand why people are annoyed that the engine of Fallout: New vegas wasn't changed since FallOut 3, but I can't believe after playing this game that it got a lower score. In fact, considering the alternative (I am thinking about how I miss mass effect 1 dispite the graphics improvements in 2 and 3 that sucked)- I wish that every good or decent game had another go like in fallout new vegas, where the graphic is changed but everything else is improved. You probably already heard of the hardcore mod- but this game have so much more. Right- Puting a faction clothes doesn't feel like hitman, sneaking with a silencer pistol and hacking computers isn't like splintercell (Through the minigame is better) And butchering people at the strip isn't GTA (I admit I didn't try that one), but you have the choise and this is what matter. The reputation-karma system is a giant improvement, this is no longer a fight between good and evil which I hated in fallout 3. The brotherhood of steel is in the gray zone again- not evil and not good, but there are much more factions here- every town has its own opinion of you, every gang, tribe, republic- and its working. The gameplay requires that you skip some missions, because if you want to achieve something beyond money you can't just take every contract you are given (Or maybe you can? I didn't try that one either) The ending is great- There are not only many diffrent "big" decisions but you also need to think what are consequnces of you decisions- The NCR give order, but is this what the people of Primm really need? The brotherhood of steel have good people, but won't killing them now prevent an un-needed blood spilling? Is Mr. house really aiming for better tommorow, or did the power made him a heartless crazy old man? Or maybe things will be better off if I will be the one in control around here? And I admit I don't have the answers to all those questions yet- because I made other decisions
Another big imporvement is the companions- Not only easier to control with the companion wheel but also much less linear. Talking to them, depending on the conversation, can reveal new side missions that improve loyality and change how the game ends, at least for those pals of yours. Some companions have different traits and some have different behaviour- like Boone, who will engage every Legion man he sees without asking or caring about the consiquences. My review is already getting too long for most people to read- so I will sum up and say this is a good game, much improved fromt he previous fall out 3 and I suggest getting it when the price is right. I don't agree about this game replay value- The game is big time consumer and is simply too long to play again for me. And thats exactly why I had to make my decisions, and live with them.
Oh and one more thing, this time is bad- For a game that long, with so much hours in the open, I would much expect a much better and varied music- If this game happens in the 2200+, how come the music is from 1500? IS that really all that survived? I know not every game can afford GTA: Vice city soundtrack and talkshows, but come on, I am craving for water in the middle of nuclear desert- Do I really have to hear this old song AGAIN?

New Vegas adds many new gameplay elements, such as the Companion Wheel (makes it easier to interact with Followers), "iron sights" for aiming weapons, more organized factions and the Reputation system (represents the player's relationship with factions in the game), reloading benches (for crafting ammo), a **** of new weapons, a reorganization of Skill types (Big Guns skill is dropped, Survival skill, which affects food and clothing recipes and their benefits, is introduced), and Skill level requirements for weapons. The reason I can't rate this game 10 is because of hardore mode, sure you don't have to play it in hardcore mode (yet there is a achievement or trophy for beating the game on it) but playing hardcore mode is ridiculous where dehydration and starving is a problem yet almost everything will give you radiation poisoning, ammo counts as weight which is stupid, armor and weapons break down faster which is a recreation of Dead Island, etc. But this game is definitly a top 10 in my list for being a very cool realistic game where if you're bored with funny games, put this game in your pc or xbox or ps3 and get ready to actually die. If at the end of fallout 3 you were like "MOAR" like most sane people, then you will want to get this, as it is a longer, better experience, albeit without the "new-appeal" of fallout 3, since it's the same in many respects, except with a longer, completely different and new world. It's equally good to fallout 3, but if you have played one or the other they are both quite the same.

Too bad that it has been released too early, and too bad that it has such a bad interface and combat mechanics. This is just for players that like great story and dialogue. For great fights, look elsewhere.

Fallout: New Vegas grants players the freedom to tackle the world the way they wish and this is in no way a hyperbole. What many RPGs lack in actual player freedom, New Vegas offers in droves. While this absolute ambition eventually causes the game to chug in some areas and its overall stability, its other parts more than make up for what is the best Fallout game to be released.

Taking place in the Mojave desert, Obsidian does right by not continuing the story of Fallout 3, rather just having a new setting altogether with its own lore, mechanics, and factions. Speaking of factions, they are much more fleshed out and less clear cut as opposed to the black and white factions of The Enclave and The Brotherhood of Fallout 3. The NCR, Legion, Mr. House, and the Brotherhood are deeply interesting and have a vested interest in controlling the Strip where your character decides the fate of the Mojave.

Unlike Fallout 3, New Vegas's mechanics support any build you can think of rather than just the typical combat savvy wastelander. New Vegas also does right by having much more gray decisions as opposed to the farcically binary choices present in Bethesda's version of the Wasteland. In total, Fallout: New Vegas is a much closer vision to the originals while expanding upon them. The mechanics in addition are more RPG centric, meaning it is much easier to build a specific class. The inclusion of a survival mode further notions the post-apocalyptic feel to the universe that Fallout 3 couldn't achieve mechanically despite it being visually more representative of a post apocalypse.

The Mojave Wasteland, while not as bleak as the Capital Wasteland, is a much more appealing and mechanically sound area to explore with its design centered around funneling the main character to specific areas of interest should they choose to enact on it. The areas and vaults are much more enticing to explore this time around as they each have either a visual or lore based story to tell in addition to being cooler to look at. Your companions this time around are much more interesting with their own story and sidequest to accompany each of them while they can chime in on the main quest on hand. The main quest pits you as a courier who at first is looking for the man who shot and left you for dead at the beginning of the game but it eventually shifts to siding with one faction over who controls The Strip and eventually the Mojave Wasteland. It's well paced and filled with enough twists and turns that remain in theme with the Fallout name but its the freedom granted in how you tackle this quest that makes it so memorable.

Despite the praises New Vegas might accumulate, it has faulty aspects as well. For one, the ambition and freedom the game possesses leads to hiccups in the now outdated engine used in Fallout 3. Numerous glitches including broken quests, broken AI, and visual oddities to the point of needing a patch. Without mods, the game has a rough look resulting from the use of that same engine. When you finally reach the Strip you'd expect a lively area, but instead you get the feeling that a tumbleweed would eventually roll in.

Given these faults, Fallout: New Vegas more than earns the moniker of the "best" Fallout game since it sticks to what makes the Fallout name so great while expanding upon it with dark humor mixed with serious undertones wrapped in a game that gives player freedom in droves, something that many games who tout the same fail to deliver. Patrolling the Mojave doesn't make you wish for a nuclear winter, it gives you a damn good time.

I found myself more addicted to New Vegas as time went by. I ended doing about 5 solid playthroughs-to see different endings and outcomes from the choices I made. There are also a lot more quests and characters to interact with. Much more lively than Fallout 3 and much more to do.

Gameplay improvements include the companion wheel, hardcore mode, being able to aim down the sights, return of the faction system (which is put into full gears and used perfectly). NV also contains elements of Van Buren and is more connected to the original two Fallouts.

There are two big gripes though. One would be the game world. As unique and interesting a post apocalyptic Las Vegas sounds, it is not executed very well. Largely due to engine limitations, Vegas is small and a bit underwhelming in size, and the Mojave Wasteland is largely open desert and feels more like a Frontier than anything. Kind of like Fallout 2's wasteland. The second is obvious, the bugs and glitches. There are a lot. I've encountered 1 game breaking glitch and many crashes, character bugs and freezes.

New Vegas is still largely an ambitious RPG, having almost everything be based on the choices you make. Combine that with the amount of things to do and people to interact with, you'll find yourself thoroughly engrossed in this game

What makes this game superior to Fallout 3?
Fallout 3, while in itself a fun, sandbox roleplaying game, doesn't match up to New Vegas. New Vegas is a refinement of the formula found in Fallout 3. For starters, the writing has been significantly tightened up much more interesting, believable and quirky characters exist along with a vastly improved main story while it's still nothing incredible, it's still undoubtedly superior to the lackluster plot line found in Fallout 3.
As said before, by no means is Fallout 3 a bad game. By rating New Vegas so highly in comparison, it's simply a testament to what great fun New Vegas is. It's quite understandable that this game isn't for everyone. Though I thoroughly believe most people will find the unique charm to the game alluring as they explore what remains of Nevada and Las Vegas. The Fallout franchise once again creates a subliminal post-apocalyptic atmosphere, mixed in with surreal science fiction elements that creates an experience quite like no other (except in other Fallout games).
To me, Fallout 3 didn't have any particularly charismatic NPCs to deal with. In New Vegas, you encounter an array of intriguing individuals, from the enigmatic Mr House to the brutal Caesar and his Legion, along with other major and minor characters along the way such as Benny, Jason Bright and recurring super mutant Marcus. All of these characters prove to be highly interactive and interesting to talk to, with their at times ambitious yet absurd goals and developed backgrounds.
To summarise New Vegas in one word, I would choose choice. Quite literally every NPC in New Vegas is eligible to be killed quite unlike Skyrim, where I found it more common that the NPC would be invincible rather than someone I could actually defeat. You might be wondering what the big deal is that you can kill characters in a video game. The truth is, New Vegas does an excellent job at building up characters, from how it goads you to hate Benny, or to fear Caesar leading to something spectacular when you get the opportunity to show these characters what you think of them not that this is a game all about killing, of course. In fact, conversation and interaction often leads to their often misunderstood motives being explained to you, forcing something of a morale dilemma as you try to decide who to vouch for in the barren wastelands.
Other than that, there almost isn't a single quest where two to four alternatives aren't presented to you to go about dealing with it. As an example, I'll use likely the first real quest you encounter, 'Ghost Town Gunfight'. The quaint village of Goodsprings is under attack by bandits. The obvious choice for most people would be to defend it but how to go about doing that? You can speak to the various villagers for support, Doc Mitchell offering you medical supplies, or you can convince Trudy to rouse up more townspeople to aid you in the fight. Or how about you simply kill Joe Cobb, the leader of the bandits' (or 'Powder Gangers' as they're known) before he can lead the assault?
However, the choice doesn't end there. You can opt to go and help Joe Cobb instead leading to you pillaging the town alongside his thug-like allies. After killing everyone in Goodsprings, you can go to where the Powder Gangers have holed up and engage in an entire quest chain where you help the Powder Gangers in their anti-NCR activities. All from just a single quest; there being dozens of quests to do. The main story itself has at least four separate factions you can join (one being yourself), with entirely different quest chains along the way.
If RPGs in general interest you, if the apocalypse interests you or heck simply just good games interest you, then definitely give New Vegas a spin. You may not fully grasp the appeal at first, but after you realise just how much is available to you to do, all of it being fully developed and interesting, it's a game you can't stop playing until you've explored every nook and cranny.

New vegas manages to find this balance nicely. Basically you get more of the same Fallout goodness and it still feels fresh enough to keep you interested.

New feature worth mentioning is the faction system, where you gain reputation (good, bad or mixed) based on your actions. Different groups will react differently to you, based on your past actions towards them. Every group will also have their own conflicting agendas and it can be hard to try please them all. I think the system worked quite nicely and added some depth to the game and character interactions.

Only major shortcoming are the DLCs which pretty much suck. I guess 'Old world blues' was near decent, but interrupting the main plot for ~10 hours to do something completely unrelated just didn't work for me. Also honorable mention to 'Lonesome road' which was boring as hell, but at least you could quit playing it without completing the whole DLC.

I liked Fallout 3, but was frustrated by the lack of imagination in the world architecture, and banality of the quests. If you like more of a open world feel, as I do, this is might be the game to get of the two. There are quite a few minor bugs throughout (especially in Old World Blues DLC), but not any game breakers. You will have to reload here or there, and the graphics are dated (they date back to at least 2007). If you are a level capper, but don't want to do all the DLC, you will be frustrated, as you probably will have to depopulate the world significantly to reach level cap. The mainline story is easy to finish even on hardcore mode, but if approached as an exploration rpg it is a fun game. If you do not enjoy exploring or doing side quests then this is not the game for you. Also, this game is best played in first-person mode and with a game controller (I prefer XBOX 360). It is a console port, but playable. The menu is intentionally bad (in the vein of retro-futurism). Think BASIC meets plasma/laser weapons. Glass soda bottles and type writers meets holo-projectors (Dead Money DLC). It's a wacky game world but it's worth giving a look. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout: New Vegas takes place in the Mojave Desert, now known as the Mojave Wasteland. You step into the shoes of a courier, who was making a delivery to a mysterious figure in Las Vegas before being robbed and shot in the head by a man named Benny. You, luckily, are saved by a robot who is under the control of the head of Las Vegas (Now known as New Vegas). He brings you to a small town were he lives, and has the doctor there patch you up. After assigning S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points and picking tagged skills/traits, you are then thrust into the wasteland once again with a weapon pertaining to your highest combat skill. Now, what you do is up to you. Will you be a hero of the wastes, or the devil in disguise?
Fallout: New Vegas is expanded upon immensely compared to the other games. Aiming is improved, skills are organized better, and the AI is just awesome. For Example:
Starting: S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points are very important to your character. They improve Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck, or worsen them, based on point assignment. Also, instead of Fallout 3's baby book that gives you a guess on what they improve, the game directly states what skills each improves. Also, the skills were organized much better. A missile launcher is now an explosive weapon (the explosives skill isn't just grenades/landmines anymore). The big guns skill was entirely removed, with each weapon being categorized based on ammunition type. Traits are new, which give both benefits and drawbacks based on what you choose. Finally, instead of Fallout 3's "thrust into the world a god" type game play (it really isn't hard to kill anything in that game), you have a very simple weapon and very little ammo if it is a gun. It makes the game MUCH harder from the start, though the couriers stash gives you more to start.
Factions: The Mojave is filled with many different factions, from the humble NCR to the beautiful, vice-filled streets of New Vegas. You also can gain a reputation, good or bad, with factions, which causes it's members to react differently. Sometimes, if your reputation is high enough, the faction will give you gifts, or you can even recruit new followers from them. If it's low enough, people may berate you, or even try to kill you on sight. Factions like the NCR and Caesars Legion will send assassins after you if your reputation with them is low enough.
Combat: Many more guns to choose from, WEAPON MODS, improved AI, etc. The list goes on.
Infiltration: Need to go to a major faction area, but your reputation is too low? Just get a disguise! Yes, you can disguise yourself as a member of a major faction. People from the faction will not try to kill you, even if your reputation is low. However, be alert, as guards and guard dogs often roam around, and they can see through your disguise. Also, enemies of that faction will immediately become hostile to you, no matter what your reputation with them was previously.
Endings: There are multiple endings in Fallout: New Vegas, depending on who you want to help.
DLC: There is plenty of DLC to choose from for Fallout New Vegas. From Old World Blues' backstory reviling, to Lonesome Road's immense difficulty and bringing to a final fight with the courier who was supposed to take your place for delivering the platinum chip to Mr.House.
Game play Mechanics: At the start, you can choose to initiate Hardcore mode, which means that you have to eat, drink, sleep, and healing items always work overtime. Also, in New Vegas, you can gamble all of your caps away! That, or just get kicked out of every casino on the strip by winning too much for an achievement. Also, you can now buy and install implants. And, as with all four other fallout games, there is, of course, karma. It doesn't affect much, though it changes the ending you get for completing the game, and even allows you to obtain certain perks, while disabling others. Finally, weapons now have skill and strength requirements. If not met, the weapon will do less damage/be less accurate.
Minor Changes: Minor changes include: Luck increasing your chances of winning gambling games, new drugs, more, better locations, more, better side quests, etc.

Overall, Fallout: New Vegas is a great game. If you liked Fallout 3, you'll LOVE this. The reason I'm not giving it a ten is because there ARE some game-breaking bugs, and some areas could've been expanded upon. But, other then that, 9/10.

It's the game breaking bugs that you gotta worry about. These usually happen when you don't install a mod right, and can seriously break your game where you can't play it. Just when you think you have seen everything you stumble into another "deep" side mission. I don't want go in detail about missions but you have to try it. In my opinion the main story isn't as strong as Fallout 3. Even though I have read the original Fallout games were more mature and better than Fallout 3. The landscape and wasteland has more of a rundown apocalyptic feel than Fallout 3. I liked the choice of songs in Fallout 3 radio station a little more than this selection but it's still good. All in all, it's a great game that I'd put in a Best of All Time list for sure, and I think it'd be just about perfect if they would fix the bugs I encountered. Just make sure you have a lot of time you can spend on this one, it took me nearly 72 hours to get through it, and I didn't even 100% it. I very strongly recommend Fallout New Vegas. Expand

The combat system may seem a bit strange, but you get used to it pretty fast, and you can always lower the difficulty if you're stuck on a mission.

The only negative point is the lack of NPC's. You sometimes find yourself fighting for a "city" containing 5 citizens, one of them you just had to kill, which is ruining the immersion, even if it's post-apocalyptic.

Conclusion : Very nice universe, good storyline, 8/10 !

Also vast improvements in terms of gunplay (iron sights!) and the re-introduction of ammo types (armoured target? AP round then. No armour? Take 75% more damage with my HP roudn then) and a rather simplistic yet still interesting weaponm odding system. Oh, and huge ammounts of weapons. First off, let's get this out of the way: yes, it can be buggy. Yes, New Vegas itself was a let down. Yes, it was rushed out without real QA or as much polish as it deserved. Yes, it's still glitchy.

All that said, New Vegas is one of the most immersive, compelling and outright best open world experiences that Obsidian has ever developed. You'll come to realize that not every ending is going to be happy. Not every character is going to be good, nor will you necessarily find the good in them. There will be morally ambiguous choices and not every one will be morally right to make. You will, however, have to make them, then live with the consequences of them.

You won't find hand holding. You will find that you're just not meant to be in some places until you're ready. You won't necessarily find redemption. Your choices may lead to terrible and unintended endings that you never suspected may happen. You won't always "get the girl" or provide leadership that inspires everyone to sing Kumbaya across a bonfire. What you WILL find: the ability to genuinely roleplay in the aftereffects of Fallout 1 and 2, as the NCR marches forward into expansionism, in the post-Tandi era, nor can they necessarily be called the "good" guys anymore.

They will find challenges in raider factions, the remnants of the Khans, a backwards and desperate group of Brother of Steel remnants, attempting to cling to dwindling relevance, a New Vegas that may not even WANT the NCR's help, and the shadow of a massive empire in building, in the Legion.

The villains aren't always necessarily the obvious choices either, and the dialogue in this game can be outstanding at painting the tales of choices made of desperate necessity or sacrifices made for longevity in a precarious time.

What part will you play in this yarn? A runner? A go-between? The errand-boy? A general? Perhaps an assassin? Maybe an angry gunslinger bent on revenge? A trader who is just looking for the biggest payout, based on all the troubles? A merc? A femme fatale? A silver tongued thief? Any one of these can be viable and provide unique playthroughs, providing the game with its biggest replayability.

The music selection is also one of the most memorable things about delving into the Mojave, as a selection of immersive and appropriate songs provides a soundscape while you trek. In The Shadow Of The Valley is probably one of my most favorite.

If none of this has convinced you to pick this up yet, how about the fact that the game is also frequently on sale for the complete edition? The entertainment value for the price is fairly unmatched by few games. You would be doing yourself a disservice to not experience this game at least once.

Taking a broader step in to the first person arena, and bringing us back to the west makes this game stand head and shoulders above it's predecessor, and nearly shoulder to shoulder with Fallout 2. With current patches the bugs have been more or less squashed and stability improved to even better than Fallout 3 with current patches. So lets get on to the game it self. Like any self respecting Fallout title your character, the Courier in this case, starts with a fairly simple main task. This time the main task is getting revenge. From there the story expands and if you play your cards right you might just save the world.

The good: The tweaks Obsidian gave the Gamebryo engine make this game look far more polished than Fallout 3 and makes things feel a bit more real. The characters in this game are much more colorful than 3's were and rival the characters of Fallout and Fallout 2. This game was worked on by a lot of old hands from Black Isle who developed the first two games, as a result the humor is back, in a very big way if you pick the Wild Wasteland trait. The game recaptures that desolate desert feeling of the originals and the open feeling they gave you. The music, especially on the radio is fantastic and really shapes up the atmosphere. Though I failed to mention it in my Fallout 3 review Fallout 3 does have that same feeling. On the subject of sound the voice talent is again top notch like all Fallout games. Ron Perlman returns yet again a s our Narrator, Michael Dorn returns as the Super Mutant Marcus, Wayne Newton graces our radios as Mr. New Vegas. Not to mention other huge stars and great voice actors who lend their voices in this game. With the most current patches the game feels solid and tight. Along with the Main game the DLC adds hours of fun to the game. Again having the PC version is paramount due to the mod-friendliness of the game, and again we get the GECK to make our own mods when the creativity bug bites. The mods are doubly important as they can extend the games life several times past the main play throughs of the game. Also like Fallout 3 this game rewards exploration, and if you can see it in the distance, chances are you can go there. The best part in my opinion is the return of the Super Mutants and Nightkin from the Miraposa Military Base/Masters Army. It's nice to have some intelligent Super Mutants wandering around rather than the dumb as dirt ones from Fallout 3. Possibly the best part is that this game more fully embraces the Lore of Fallout and adds back in a lot of the sleaze factor that made the originals so desolately charming. There are also some nods to the originals, though Fallout 3 had them there were fewer there than here, and they felt less sincere than this time. One last thing here, if you pick energy weapons as a tag skill to start, you get an energy weapon to start with, finally we're not punished for liking laser guns!

The bad: Still no usable vehicles or mounts... Still that matters a lot less than it did in Fallout 3 due to better spacing of towns and outposts in which to resupply. We still didn't get back the vault doors of the originals which is somewhat disappointing. Some bugs still crop up with the newest patches, but I've yet to run into any game breakers. The path feels a bit linear compared to previous titles even the third instalment, still there are plenty of reasons to back track which makes it all worth while. The lack of intelligent Deathclaws and those nasty Wanamingos from Fallout 2 feel like a sorely missed opportunity.
That damned companion limit of 2. Really please bring back the Charisma based companion limit. The final note on the bad: This game was made by Obsidian, and it feels like it. By that I mean it feels like there's a little bit missing, this is because there is a little bit missing. As with almost every Obsidian game a few things that really leave a gap when cut, were cut. This is almost always due to deadlines with Obsidian, and not for artistic reasons like exhibited by Black Isle. This is also why the game need as many patches as it received.

Other thoughts: V.A.T.S. still feels useless in a real time game, but it's still very entertaining to kill enemies with it. Obsidian contains a lot of old hands from Black Isle Studio who made the original games.

Final thoughts: This really does seem like the game Fallout 3 should have been. It stands shoulder to shoulder with Fallout and Fallout 2 and a bit taller than 3. It captures the feeling and spirit of the originals, while elevating that to the first person arena. Proving that some games can make the leap to 3D. It's an excellent addition to the Fallout universe, an excellent RPG, and an excellent game that all RPG, FPS, and Fallout fans should have in their library.

Choice and consequence are very present and at the end of the game, you are shown the results of your actions in a slideshow like with Fallout and Fallout 2.

There are often different ways in which to tackle certain quests and the ones open to you will depend on the build and development of your character.

Fallout: New Vegas has a wide range of interesting weapons and futures iron sights, as opposed to fallout 3. The desert/vegas setting is very fun and interesting. Music choice and DJ is very good (though the only point at which fallout 3 was better).

How can you not appreciate a game that gives you a nuclear grenade launcher and still have an adrenaline rush when facing a deathclaw?

New Vegas’ Hardcore mode makes survival in the wasteland more interesting, limiting the power of RadAway and Stimpacks. Yes, that makes the game harder, but also more rewarding. And what makes it all the sweater is that there are plenty of additional mods and tweaks available for all types of gameplay, including game director Josh Sawyer’s own balance-tweak mod. What I love the most about New Vegas is how it adds the Fallout feeling back into the first-person RPG framework- a path Fallout 4 sadly deviated from, leaving FNV as the last testament to the Fallout series greatness.

Don´t misunderstand me, Fallout 3 had a really great world and item design that instantly was able to pull me into this hypothetical universe, but it somehow lacked on the kind and ammount of quest connections as the previous fallouts did it.

Well, i was wrong with my fear, obsidian did a great job on this.

As always i will talk about the for everyone visible things. The graphics and designs fit for the fallout universe and look, well, ok is the best i might say. I am only evaluating the basic maingame and not any mods here so the graphics of fallout new vegas already looked outdated when the game got released. Textures are low res and everything looks a bit "wishy washy". Beside that - compared to other fallouts - the world looks partially a bit empty, lots of flat empty spaces or whide areas where nearly...nothing is. The rest of the world design reminds a bit more of a "mad max" movie then a fallout design, but thats just personal taste aspects and i won´t weight that in any way. Shooting and aiming feels sluggish if you don´t use the v.a.t.s. - but at last it´s an rpg and not a shooter.

So now we know how the meal looks, let´s check the taste.

Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas still share a skill and perk system. In new vegas a lot of unpopular perks got changed or even exchanged to more fitting or community requested ones. The system is lend from the original fallouts and not that way hard to get through as most perks and their relations are visible offering a nice rpg experience to build your personal type of character. Prefer shooting through enemy lines or do you like sneaking? Or are you the talking toaster convincing everyone with your words of mouth? All possible.

The mainstory at first looks a bit flat, but after some hours of gameplay it expands into a spiderweb of sub-(more or less)related quests given by all types of npc that will route you all over the map to a lot of locations to explore. There is always something to do and nearly never anything repeats. The game nearly never leaves you stand in the middle of the mojave without knowing where to go next.

The equipment (weapons, armor) consist of the same from fallout 3 and additional a lot of missing stuff from the original games. Special/unique equipment is well hidden and in nearly every location something interesting can be found so exploration by quest or on your own hand gets always rewarded with something.

Fallout New Vegas is by far till now (i already played F4) the only third person offspring that is able to deliver the most close deep experience the original fallouts gave the players.

I still give it a 9, the worst thing are the graphics but the title is from 2010 and in a true rpg graphics are always at a lower rating position then the rpg experience itself.

New Vegas!!! We miss you! We're so sorry for taking you for granted... :(

Yea, that is how bad it has gotten. I was one of those people that took this game for granted because of my insanely high expectations back then after playing through Fallout 3. But after playing Fallout 4, I sincerely apologize to Obsidian and I really wish we had them helping Bethesda today, because looking back now, this is one of the best RPGs I have ever played.

Now before I get into this, let me just say that Fallout 4 is not a bad game by any stretch, in fact it made one large improvement over this game in the gunplay mechanics. Mostly everything else RPG related, was a downgrade though.

What makes New Vegas one of the best RPGs I have ever played is how it incorporated every RPG element into the game correctly and effectively. This game is not perfect though, it was and sometimes still can be, plagued by bugs, as many RPGs are. Back in the day, this game used to crash so frequently it drove me insane, along with the words "FalloutNV.exe has stopped working" appearing in all my nightmares.

Bugs are to be expected in large open world RPGs, but some of NV's bugs used to be game breaking and downright frustrating at times back then, and I would be dishonest if I did not mention them as the main downside of this game. Thankfully, in more modern times, the game runs a lot smoother and has several official and unofficial patches and mods that help the game run a lot better and make it a hell of a lot more enjoyable. Big shoutout to the community for assembling the unofficial patches and mods that have elevated this game in recent years.

When I really examine what made this game as good as it was, and still is, it just had to be the freedom of choices in the game. There were real consequences for everything you did in the game, and it made sure that you felt them as you progressed through the game.

The attribute/skill point system for your abilities made so much sense back then and did not need to be changed in Fallout 4, it was much better being able to distribute the points into areas that were attuned to your gameplay, alongside choosing perks, than it is to only have the latter available.

And for the love of God, what in the f*** were Bethesda thinking in removing the speech options and turning it into a console-ized 4 button response system/speech wheel??? That was an absolute fail, whereas Fallout 3 and NV had the numerous responses so that you felt like you had a plethora of conversation options, and could ask for every detail of a situation if you really wanted.

Gonna stop with the rant comparison to Fallout 4 and just get into the list before it gets out of hand.

    Pros:

    - Excellent RPG elements
    - Excellent Map scale and Location
    - Actual choices with actual consequences
    - Great group of characters throughout the story
    - Excellent progression system for your character (Skill Points & Perks)
    - Incentivized exploration
    - Actual multiple endings
    - A few interesting companions
    - Great dialogue system
    - Good expansions/DLC questlines
    - Manages to capture the feeling of a post apocalyptic Vegas & stay true to the Fallout series
    - Debatably the best Fallout game in the series

    Cons:

    - The BUGS (better nowadays)
    - Terrible gunplay mechanics (VATS is almost always necessary)
    - Mediocre graphics (improved with mods nowadays)

It is pretty easy to tell by this list that there are more good things than bad, especially now with all of the mod fixes the community has been able to create for this game. It is unfortunate that in its day, this game did not get the love it really deserved, seeing as it was expected to blow Fallout 3 out of the water and correct every error its predecessor had. Back then I would have given this game an 80 and wouldn't have thought twice about it.

Now that I look back on it, and replayed it enough times recently, I can truly appreciate the game for what it was, and what it really is, which is one of the best RPGs I have ever played, and in MY opinion, the best entry in the Fallout series, which I will undoubtedly compare Fallout 5 to.

This game, for me, receives a score of 93. Simply because I hate the gunplay mechanics to this day and that is my only major complaint. War never changes, but my scores do. :/

It's story is incredible, it has an amazing open world with great locations, some of the best writing that will ever grace your ears, and actually manages to make the spamming combat of Fallout 3 fun with all sorts of different weapons and sound quality. The game also has some of the greatest DLC you will ever experience. This game isn't just good, it is the gold standard that every RPG should strive to become. Having never played Fallout 3, or had any prior experience playing any Fallout game before New Vegas, I was taken back by just how expansive and story filled the game's world had to offer, and was instantly hooked into the Fallout franchise. New Vegas takes place mostly within the Mojave desert, where the remains of civilization have started to grow in power as multiple factions have set their eyes towards rebuilding civilization.
This game runs very well on most computers, to the point where a standard commercial laptop (With Intel graphics) can run the game on fairly decent settings at a standard 50-60 FPS consistently with mods included. The story expands throughout the entire game's world, with the Fallout 3 RPG system providing the player with multiple different options in conversations and in approaches towards most quests. Obsidian has also added and changed a few things, including skills, which you are able to chose what specific skills your character excels at, with each skill equally useful depending on what the player is looking for. The in-game world is expansive and is not too empty considering the region it takes place in. Like many Bethesda games, there are plenty of bugs in the base game. However, bugs in New Vegas are mostly insignificant or can make the game a little more entertaining at times except for crashes. (I highly recommend you save often to help counteract this). The one major issue i have with the game is that companion quests are very hard to reasonably complete without any knowledge on how they work. It can be extremely easy to miss a quest completely, as you may have already used up every single quest trigger without that companion in the party. Luckily the PC version come with the console, which can be used to advance in quests even if they do happen to glitch or break.
I highly recommend this game, even if your not a fan of the Fallout series, as it is a extensive game with a long supported modding community and on its own stands out as a immersive post-apocalyptic RPG.

    9.5 out of 10.
Great RPG and true heir of Fallout series. Most of the flaws are legacy of Fallout 3 engine and mechanics. Good writing, vast dialog trees with perks, skills and SPECIAL attributes influenced options, interesting quests that provide a lot of choices for player, huge replayability.

Great game. Was avoiding it for long time, because I thought, it's just little bigger DLC. Boy was I wrong, There is sooo many points of interests and locations, it took me about 50 hours to explore and finish the game. Just go and play it, it's worth every minute. Only thing I didn't like much is color palete used, everything is just brown :D

Despite Obsidian's fan-service, Fallout: New Vegas is a heaping pile of bugs.

Fallout: New Vegas looks like an Add On to Fallout 3, but that should not mean, that it's a copy of its forerunner. It scores with an great atmosphere, nice story and all the typical and awesome Fallout features.
