Fallout 76 is more an online first person shooter than it is a role playing game. Gone are branching quest lines and player expression through dialogue or choices. Instead the game relies mostly on how players interact in the game world, for good or bad.

Bethesda’s Appalachia is beautifully crafted world, and despite bugs and flaws its a game with a lot of potential, but one that needs excessive tweaking to reach its’ potential. For now Fallout 76 tries to be so many things at once, and ironically becomes a bit over-encumbered with ambition itself.

Fallout 76 consists of multiple paradoxes that does not glue all that well together. It is a Fallout game, but you’re very limited in what you can pick up, keep or sell. It’s a survival game, but there’s power armors and stockpiles of ammo around every corner. It’s a post apocalyptic irradiated place, but you can hardly kill a ghoul without getting a rad-x.

It’s an open world game where solo exploration is encouraged, but you’ll unintentionally set off group events that makes players flock to your location. You can trade with strangers, but they can one-shot you with an overpowered weapon. You can stay away from other players and play it solo, but over time it might make you feel lonely or even slightly paranoid.

Bethesda’s Appalachia is perhaps the most impressive game world Bethesda has crafted to date, like a mix of Fallout 4 and Skyrim, only bigger. The addition of different regions makes the world a lot more interesting than earlier Fallouts to explore, and although many Fallout 4 assets are re-used, there’s a lot of new assets and lightings added. You can see valleys and vistas far into the horizon, you can watch rain clouds drift towards you, or nuke clouds rise above you.

The downside to it, and one that gets more evident the more you play, is that the locations are spread out a lot more than in previous Bethesda games, and that the wilderness itself is largely devoid of animals and points of interest.

Bethesda games have always been about exploring and looting, but hoarding items has previously been unproblematic when there’s not limited weight and “stash”. Fallout 76 on the other hand introduces both limited inventory weight, stash weight and a lot of other “survival” elements, like food and water needs.

As you level up you’ll find you need a lot of “convenience” perks to remedy thirst, hunger, food spoilage and low inventory weight, and then there’s also radiation and diseases to account for. This makes leveling up more of a chore than what it has used to be, it’s just not as fun to pick 10 weight and food perks and 2-3 that are unique to your character, just to be able to play the game without going half crazy because your character is thirsty, hungry or over-encumbered all the time.

There’s an inherent contradiction in the attempted combination of the Bethesda style of open world games, where the player becomes God Allmighty with a all the loose items in the world in a drawer, and a survival setting where the player is supposedly trying to scrape by on tin cans and irradiated flowers.

We are wading in an endlessly re-spawning junk pile, where all the loot is randomly thrown upon us like bling bling in a casino, but we can’t keep much of it, we can’t stash it, and because vendors have low and limited amounts of caps we can’t easily sell it, at least not without doing the rounds between faction vendors and waiting 24 hours for vendor inventories to reset.

Another problem with Fallout 76 is that it relies a little too much on leveled lists and randomization. You can find recipes at different locations in the world, but if you want a certain recipe for a certain food item, you just need to be lucky and stumble upon it in-game. The same goes for plans for crafting weapons or armor. At its worst playing Fallout 76 feels more like playing a slot machine than a rpg.

Luckily Bethesda have said they will improve on the game in the future. Let's hope they pick the right perks to level up their game.

We all got excited at the BETA because it was a BETA that promised more. Bethesda lied to us. The BETA was no more than a massive stress test to see how many people could get on and stress the servers, not a BETA that had more to come out before release. The BETA WAS the game!

This game is a MASSIVE joke! We were promised changes, adventure, and a new chapter. What we got was a mess!
For starters, there are NO NPCs in the game! No one to interact with, no one to see how they survived, no one to give quests. The entire game seems to be a rushed attempt to play off Fortnight in the Fallout Universe because its all PVE or PVP, not the original Fallout we have been promised to continue.

Quests are PVP based. Its all about killing other creatures OR becoming a Raider and killing other players, there is no story to follow anymore.

Crafting is bugged out, and usually results in crashes. If you build your CAMP, and then relocate it, you must start from scratch because of bugs that prevent you from placing your saved CAMP again without rebuilding it.

Bethesda ALSO promised us WEST-TEK Canvas bags from dropping the $200 for the special editions, INSTEAD WE GOT NYLON CHINESE RIP-OFFS BECAUSE they, and I quote:
“Ran out of supplies and had to make a change at the last minute to deliver games.”

In all this game is a MASSIVE MESS and a waste of time and money for a game that could have been so much more. Instead of a game, they released a BETA that they continue to update just TO MAKE MONEY!

It is even a shame to call a game. Just the trash that belched Bethesda.
They will not even be able to fix everything so that it does not look like crap, because you need to look at the root of the problem - the “engine”. It is so outdated that even with the titanic work of the developers of this **** nothing sensible will come of it.

Now, I can write about what is wrong with that game for hours and make a 45 minute review video but, that is not the point. We can all see that Crysis 3 looks like it was made 5 years after this game, not before. Console players may not be used to such graphics but this looks like garbage on PC and the frame rate is locked to 60hz. (You can throw that 144hz monitor away) Most of the rational, non-ignorant gamers already know how bad and unplayable this game is, despite this really interesting 'Bethesda Fanboy' movement. These big game companies cannot treat us like half brained maggots or sheep, putting out an incomplete product with false advertisement and full price while they 'DO NOT OFFER REFUNDS'. What kind of a business practice is this that you cannot return a product you don't like and that is BROKEN. That is why the game is not on Steam or any other provider with first world customer protected standards. If you live in the first world and paid by a credit card, dispute it. If you got a 'code' instead of a 'disc copy' as advertised, if you got a plastic bag instead of canvas, take action and protect consumer rights. TL;DR Go play Fallout: New Vegas instead. If you already played it, play it again.

I would forgive this big pile of mess for a solid single-player campaign with NPCs and a usual dark story, but stuck to a buggy as hell game with multi-player that adds nothing and voice records of boring missions is too much to forgive. One of the missions was to collect bottles, like I would do that IRL

I personally decided after approximately 80 hours of game play to put it aside until further patches are developed...
I think this game is highly limited by the the lack of regular updates for optimisation and bug resolution.
I all so think that the game feels slightly empty.
I personally played a full modded version of Fallout 4 before playing Fallout 76 and the difference in game contents is massive !
Either they need to let the mod community loose or start packing some serious DLC's !
I am a binge gamer i tended to stick to a single game for a while (like skyrim 1500+ hours). With Fallout 76 after 80 hours i dont feel the need to start a new game or continue my previous character... Something i never felt with other Bethesda productions !
After all that i have said i am going to give Fallout 76 a note of 5 as i am yet undecided as what to think of this game...
Only time will tell if it is truly a quality Bethesda productions or as many have said a "money grab"...

In terms of gameplay the world feel empty, PVP is a joke and so is PVE. Bethesda decided to let the players 'make their own fun' but haven't even provided the most basic tools for that. The gameplay loop is a grind and the loot isn't even that good. There is almost no incentive in playing this game. It feels like a chore!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are a lot of people reviewing the game who have never played it. I pre-ordered and am still playing it. There are a lot of people who seem to be angry that the game is not fallout 5 or FO: New Vegas 2, some, incorrectly, say that the game has changed Fallout Lore, which if they took the time to read or listen to the game holo tapes, they would see it is not the case. When it comes to open world games, by their very nature there are going to be a few bugs, however, some of the bugs are entirely on Bethesda, as is that bag issue. However, the game itself is fine. It plays more like Borderlands as a shoot 'em and loot 'em adventure, with additional features of crafting and wasteland survivalism. There are no other humans, except for players, which coincides with game lore. While there are areas for improvement, concerning bugs and possibly the addition of some more content which most online games do, the game itself is not as bad as most people are making it out to be. The game engine has actually had many parts of it replaced, so arguments about the game engine are kind of moot, except for concerns over the physics engine, that is due to be replaced. It's like Jacob has a ship and at a port he replaces a part of it, by the time he comes home no piece of the original ship remains, is it the same ship kind of deal. There are also a lot of people who just wanted a FallOut co-op mode and who are upset this isn't one, while others don't care for the anti-griefing measures taken. Bethesda probably should have implements pvp and pve servers so that people could have the kind of game experience they were hoping for and maybe they will do that in the future. There are ways the game probably should be and might be improved, however, the amount of hate is undeserved for the game. Again, we're not talking about the bag for the bugs in general, some of those bugs are entirely on Bethesda and they should be called out for it, but the game is mostly like other mmos only instead of getting quests from a humanoid npc who stands in the same spot and who you have to keep running back to over and over again, the quests come robots and from holo tapes, i.e. the dead. It really pushes the sole survivors of a nuclear holocaust with having all other humans being dead and having the life that remains being hostile. Expand

I actually had the most fun when I used an exploit to remove any weight caps. No longer did I need the cards, no longer did I have to run to a camp every 15 minutes to figure what I could get rid of, instead I actually got to play the game. As of now that exploit is now patched, and now my incentive for playing the game is entirely gone.

Doing missions that I couldn't finish got old. Trying to clear an area only to have an enemy stuck in the floor got old. There is no late game at launch, no actual feeling of factions, no focus. How is this a released game? This still feels like a beta.

It's amazing how a loyal die hard customer like myself is now second guessing anything I buy from Bethesda. How badly did you have to screw up to make me feel that way?

Many of the negative reviews are grossly exaggerated. Updating your graphics driver, as you should, completely resolves any video stuttering. The Quests do have depth and are certainly not just "fetch quests". There were server disconnects in the first couple days as is to be expected with any new multiplayer game. I've been racking many hours daily and have not been disconnected for days. Many of the negative reviews are grossly exaggerated. There were server disconnects in the first couple days as is to be expected with any new multiplayer game. I've been racking many hours daily and have not been disconnected for days. The biggest failure this game exposed is that of the Game Review establishment.

The multiplayer mechanics have also brought civility to multiplayer survival genre. After getting a wanted level for accidentally stealing another players loot. I experienced my first PVP death. Upon re-spawn I grabbed my "junk", since that's all you drop, and we gave each-other the thumbs up. There is no incentive to grief players. This aspect of the game will keep it alive and make it's base grow. I returned the favor to another player with a wanted level scoring my first PVP kill. After re-spawn I told him over voice comm no hard feelings but he had a bounty. He totally got it.

I was initially disappointed, as many other Fallout Fans were, about the lack of rich dialogue between human NPCs. For many reason, this is hard to translate into the multiplayer environment. That being said, I've really come to appreciate the stories as they are in this environment. Many questions use Terminals, Holo tapes, and notes to dell the stories and enrich the quests. Once you progress to later game quests it's even more enjoyable.

Time will expose many of the negative reviews for this game to be just another example of people jumping on band-wagons to complain. It's becoming an inside joke for those who actually play the game.

Fallout 76 represents a big disappointment and the lowest point of the series so far. Riddled with bugs, repetitive and dull gameplay, nonexistent story and outdated graphics, it fails as a both multiplayer and singleplayer experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Miracles do happen once in a while and No Man’s Sky proved that sometimes it is possible to get back on your feet even after a terrible failure. Right now though Fallout 76 is botched spectacularly on so many levels that even talking about this game is a waste of time. [01/2019, p.46]

An unfinished game with bifurcated identity and in an almost dysfunctional state. It's hard to build on a bad base, that will never change. Like the war. [Issue#292]
