All the collectable weapons are completely useless, none of them feel like a significant improvement over the basic weapons of each character, in fact, some of them are an obvious downgrade. This is a fatal mistake in a game where collecting guns is presented as a major attraction.

The consumable items are extremely rare, and the powerup items are dull and uninsteresting. There are no exciting synergies that alter gameplay in a fun or novel way. In the end you just carry on and lose interest on equiping your character.

Bosses range from completely easy to nearly unkillable, in both cases with a health bar that will test your patience if nothing else. What is more, bosses are one of the worst parts of the game, when it should be the opposite. Clearing the levels is much more fun than killing the bad guys at the end. Yet, the lack of variety in regular enemies also makes this boring after a while.

To this add 5 levels that play pretty much the same, just a hint of roguelike elements, and not many surprises in the journey. Lots of potential here, but crucial balancing errors completely destroy what could have been a remarkable experience. Don't buy this game.

Though there are many dud guns and many guns that function more or less equivalently in battle, they are still all very flavorful and 'feel' different from each other. Finding and trying out a new gun is a pleasure, even if it turns out to be kind of sucky in the great scheme of things.

Passive pickups are almost always useful. I would have to ding the active items, as they almost universally have prohibitive cooldowns (like, 'twice per floor' tops) and underwhelming effects, like a scant few seconds of invulnerability or a single explosion or AOE effect on the ground.

Later in the game, you can choose to start from the third floor or further, and get to pick a gun out of the starting gates. This feature honestly needs to be added to first-floor runs as well, maybe just with a more limited assortment of bottom-tier guns. Or at least, maybe the first chest opened ought to guarantee a gun drop. Because you can easily spend 15 minutes cruising Level 1 looking for guns, end up getting a crappy active and a Junk from your chests because you get screwed on keys, then have to fight the boss with your vanilla weapon, then finally, finally get rewarded with a crap gun like the Super Soaker or Trick Gun - enough to make you scream in frustration and suicide your character. If you persevere, this pattern can repeat itself level by level if you're unlucky enough. Just having one passable gun makes the whole run bearable, but the game withholds this basic necessity from you as often as it grants it.

The game could have done a service by advertising itself better as a bullet hell roguelike, with emphasis of 'hell'. Most people, I think, expect a coarser and cozier shooting experience akin to BoI, instead of the sprawling enemy-and-bullet-overload insanity that Gungeon presents. Even with a great arsenal of weapons at your disposel, Levels 4 (Hollow) and 5 (Forge) will still probably just register to you as a short, messy, frustrating, deadly bullet blur before you bite the dust. There is little to do in most rooms down there other than hide behind pillars and take blind shots in between bullet waves and hope something connects - it's too deadly to venture out in the open, at least for plebs like me.

I wouldn't want the game to be easier, but it could be a little more consistent, a little more readable (and dodgeable) in later levels, and a little more forthcoming with guns in early levels. Oh, and it could do with a save function, but I hear that's already in the pipeline, ETA whenever.

The gameplay is VERY difficult but fair, and through trial and error, even someone with a small amount of skill can surmount the obstacles in this game, only to feel real achievement when they finally kill that boss (I am looking at you Chamber 4!) Each weapon takes new tactics and getting used to, and most of them offer a new gimmick or purpose that doesn't always seem clear at first glance.

Long story short - It is a great action game that while light on story, makes up for it in character and tons of replayability. IF that is you are willing to Enter the Gungeon.

The difficulty is proper Roguelike-hard. It's more like my playthrough of Dungeons of Dredmor than Nuclear Throne: you really need to get to know each enemy and what it does, along with which guns work the best on particular enemies with particular attack patterns. Secrets are all over the place and super-obscure, which I like, but your mileage may vary.

The big downside: the RNG is really punishing on Floor 1. While the standard enemies are super easy, it's a huge spike when you hit the first boss. I've never had a problem getting a good set of guns by the time I hit Floor 2 and up, but that first floor can be super difficult because you have either an underpowered new gun or the default weaker one. For chests to open, you need a key. Those keys appear at random. That's the big problem - there's chests everywhere, but sometimes you won't open a single one, and then you're up against a boss who laughs at your standard pistol. Keys need to appear more often. The Convict circumvents this whole problem because she starts with a sawed-off shotgun, by the way.

Overall, I'm returning to it, it's a ton of fun, and I hope they clean up just a bit of the infuriating RNG at the beginning of the game.

Mostly a response to grayback's review who seem to either misinformed or terrible at the game.

Having played 21 hours in the first 2 days of release, most of the guns are either directly more powerful than the starting weapons, or are more difficult to use. In fact, the starting weapons are one of the only things I find boring about the game. Getting new weapons is always exciting.

Equipping your character is rarely something you get to choose, there's so many items that you're at the mercy of RNG.

I find all the bosses to be of roughly the same difficulty level that I've encountered thus far and have been frustrated with exactly 0 of them. Everything they do is in a pattern you can predict, anticipate and dodge. If you screw up, it's on you. The game has not once felt like it cheated me. To top this off, there's an incredible variety in the enemies, it's simply spread out amongst the levels. I suspect greyback never made it past the first to 2nd level.

This seems to be a case of someone who's bad at the game blaming the game rather than himself. I've played my share of games that feel like they screw you over, this isn't one of them. The balance is great, the variety is great, the art is great. The only thing that I would point to as being shy of excellent is the soundtrack.

I would urge anyone reading to check steam reviews where the general consensus is "overwhelmingly positive".

It does the latter quite poorly however, in that while the weapons look interesting, they almost all feel similar to each other, and most if not all don't fit the goofy gun-loving nature of the music and art style of the game. From the variety of characters and weapons, all the way to the original enemies and challenging bosses, this is a game you can easily sink 50 hours into in a blink of an eye. Even after completing the "real" ending, there is still much more to complete within this game, even if you've 100% completed it. I find myself coming back to play this game often, and in all honesty it is a must own for anyone who is slightly interested in the game play. This game, while extremely difficult feels much more rewarding when you finally beat that one boss that's giving you trouble, or that one enemy that's been giving you trouble for so many runs. The game also rewards good play but also relies on RNG to generate rooms and rewards, not to mention the variety of guns each with their specific advantages and disadvantages. If you are someone who usually finds themselves upset by "unfair" RNG, I can guarantee this game probably isn't for you as most of the game relies on RNG. If you get good enough at this game though, RNG will not hinder a run. The thing I find most enjoyable about this game though, is the Gungeon's lore. Each Gungeoneer is at the Gungeon for a reason, and by playing the game and completing side quests from NPC's, you will be able to unlock the mysterious story piece by piece in arguably one of the coolest ways possible. In conclusion, if you are looking for a fun and challenging rogue like, I cannot suggest this game enough. And while it's not for more casual players, the game is fair and rewarding. That's why I give Enter the Gungeon a 10/10. Expand

Some people may call this the perfect blend of Nuclear Throne and The Binding Of Isacc but unfortunately, Enter The Gungeon falls drastically short of both games with some key fundamental flaws. As a passionate fan of the rouge-like genre and dungeon crawlers in general; these issues felt more prominent and were ultimately very difficult to overlook.

The game looks great and runs very well for starters - Nuclear Throne's major problem was running at a very stuttery 30fps which was almost headache-inducing at times due to how blatant it was. Enter The Gungeon is smooth and fluid throughout. Despite this; the core gameplay is incredibly repetitive with samey enemies and copy and paste rooms albeit being generated. The combat is mediocre with bland and uninspiring weapons and the constant manual reloading of them really kills the flow. Each room is also littered with tables, cover and other aesthetics which actually get in the way and make the action more cumbersome and annoying. Enemies persistently fire at you or around your surroundings and you are forced into working with and against the cover or simply dodge-roll wherever you can. It's very messy to say the least and you can escape situations in which you should've been hit and other times you can be unfairly hit. It doesn't balance itself out though which can be infuriating.

The game is very challenging though but after a few hours; you'll probably feel too underwhelmed to even bother continuing. With a lack of novelty power-ups or unique enemies like The Binding of Issac contains; each run just feels more bland and tedious and you don't feel inspired or motivated to have another go. Seemingly RNG luck surrounding bosses and general layouts mean no matter how well you do early on; you could be left screwed over through no fault of your own just a few rooms later also.

Overall; Enter The Gungeon promised so much and despite looking like a solid premise and welcome challenger to other games in the genre; it's weighed down by poor game design and bland gameplay. Having played around 15 hours so far; I have got my money's worth for sure but any prospective buyers should just stick to the other far better games already out there. This game has been highly rated on Steam, mostly from users with under 1 hour played and leaving a not funny '10/10' but the negative reviews on there speak volumes and it is those I wished I listened to. Not even worth the refund hassle just to experience it.

Enter the Gungeon is simply an unenjoyable soup of poorly implemented design decisions. Released almost a year after Crypt of the Necrodancer, I had high hopes for this considering how well that game merged genres. However, Gungeon (like most modern indie games) seems more focused on fitting into modern design tropes rather than transfiguring its components into something greater. Gungeon is hard to recommend for anyone who isn't already a fan of masochistic, RNG-laden indie games; I don't see myself ever playing this again.

Where others in the now-bloated Rogue-like/Rogue-lite genre have succeeded in combining genres, like FTL or Necrodancer, Gungeon fails spectacularly. There is way too much RNG with loot and rewards: some floors will have only one weapon drop or you might go for a whole floor without finding a health drop until you beat the boss. Even if you do find a weapon, it might be something that has friendly fire, making the boss fight even more miserable. Bosses are ripped straight from bullet hell games with a health pool to match. You will often spend 9/10ths of the fight spamming dodge roll while shooting off-screen and using the boss's health bar to aim. Bosses have way too much health are a battle of attrition from the first floor. Map generation is bland and generic with each floor consisting of roughly a dozen similar-looking rooms with the only real game play difference between tilesets being the type and number of hazards. The sound effects are subdued and cheesy, the music sounds like stereotypical stock video game music from a TV show, and the graphics consist of ugly, chunky, pixelated blobs.

When analyzed independently, this game fails at either being a decent rogue-like or bullet hell. If better implemented, I think this could've been successful in more competent hands. All of the patches and updates have made small improvements but nothing strong enough to fix my core issues with this game. I don't recommend Gungeon for anyone besides fans of rogue-likes looking for more punishment and broken keyboards.

It start strangely, tell you to go talk to a guy about a book, but he redirect you to somewhere else that I never found, and ended up saying **** the tutorial and went in the dungeon. Then you have a kind of riddle on a statue plaque and we were stuck for 5minutes trying to find out what to do until we realized we had to try to open the door simultaneously for it to open (ok, that's us being stupid, but still not very user friendly).

Game itself was fun, fluid control and great animations and enemy design. Up until we realized we only have 3hearths (giving 6hit points), and that there's basically no health to be found anywhere. This could be okay in other game, but with the amount of bullet hell to dodge it's just too hard.

Then you die, and you realize you don't restart at the previous room you completed, neither at the previous dungeon level, but at the complete start of the game. And unless I missed something, you don't seems to unlock anything that would make the next run easier... That's kinda what I always hated about roguelike games, and why I deleted it and said **** it.

A game with a lot of potential (and still is),

Looks great and is beautifully animated, there are some great enemy designs (particularly the bosses) and some not so great enemy designs.

I always thought to myself it'd be great to have a BOI with guns, but without the synergies it doesn't make for very interesting or unique builds - In BOI, a poor run could still be enjoyable simply because of how drastically a combination of items could force you to alter your play style. Here, it feels like you need to get lucky just to have a fun experience. It is brutally stingy with money and health which is fair enough, but it does mean that more often than not a 20 minute run can dissolve in a few seconds.

Honestly though, one of the most irksome things for me about the game is that I think the first stage is just too big.

    "That's ridiculous" you say.

Well, maybe I'm just a crazy bastard, but hear me out. In a procedurally generated game such as this - it takes too long for a run to take shape and start feeling unique. For me it seems like you spend way too long with the default weapons and it can make starting a new run tedious, especially when the game hands you a dud weapon to fight the first boss with.

It's hard not walk away from each game feeling frustrated. In it's current form I think this is a good title marred by a couple of niggling flaws and maybe in the future this will be a 10/10 game.

    -----------------------------

Finally went back to Enter the Gungeon after a few years, most (if not all) of the issues I brought up in my original review have been addressed. The game has tonnes of synergies, it's much more fairly balanced and generally it's just a lot more fun to play. I've pumped a lot of time into it this time, unlocked all characters and defeated every boss (still can't win the boxing match).

All in all the game is genuinely a 10/10 now. Good stuff.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR: if you like a little bit arcade shooting games, buy it. This game is awesome and full of funny things to do.

I have player this for many hours. Many. More than 40 hours. Ok, they don't seem that much, but each run takes no more than 1 hour. So I have made more than 40 runs.

This is because nowadays, Enter the Gungeon has A LOT of un-lockable stuff. Let me explain this.

As you may know, the basic Gungeon has 5 levels. Btw, each of them are different, with different enemies, and each more complicated than the previous one. There is a secret level between level 1 and 2. If you do it well in this secret level, there is another one between level 2 and 3. If you get a certain object in level 2, you can get to a secret level between level 3 and 4.

There is also a sixth secret level, 4 secret characters and 6 of the 8 characters has a secret ending. To unlock this ending, you need some items which are not easy at all to get.

There are also secret NPC. These characters will give you new ways of playing and shops. Buying item unlocks them, so you can find them. The new ways of playing give a new life to the game.

Apart from this, there are tons of weapons, power ups and passive items to unlock. Some are regular items, like shotguns or machine-guns; some are references to other games, like Duck Hunt gun; and some are just some kind of joke. But seriously, there are a lot of things to discover. I can't understand people complaining of lack of content here.

The only problem I see, and the reason why I give a 9 instead of a 10, is something inherent to rogue like games: the luck. Its presence is not high, but sometimes the run will be awful because of bad luck. It can also be awesome because of the same reason. I would say each happens 1 out of 10 times, but it is there.

It is not perfect but is definitely a solid gameplay that leaves you hoping the developers had done more out of their ideas.

This game is a masterpiece. Binding of Isacc with guns. The music, the art, the gunplay, everything is amazing. You're going to eat **** when you start but over time, you will slowly get better and better with each run.

Like, damn. You're notably not limited in how many you can carry, either, and you'll need them all. Its humor and particular focus on gun puns have consisently made me smile. Gungeon tickles my "Oooh, whats in this box?!" sense as well as any other rogueish game, and I play a lot of them, let me tell you. I also think the teleporters are a nice touch, and save you a lot of time. There seems to be a lot of the game locked away to find: new guns, new items, a couple of secret characters, various NPC shopkeepers... except whats also locked is the actual endings for each character, an odd design decision, If I'm being honest.

It's also notably lacking in online coop. This gets it's own paragraph because it's why I didn't buy the game at launch.

The problem is, you'd be hard pressed to actually reach those endings, given the game's incredibly unforgiving difficulty past like, the first floor. I actually didn't get a chance to be screwed over by the RNG because I was dead before that became a problem. Success relies on expert timing with the dodge move and knowledge of enemy behaviors and bullet patterns as much as what guns you have, at least, that's my impression. I suppose I should have known going in there'd be problems considering it bills itself as a "Bullet Hell" game, a genre I usually pass over in favor of more relaxing experiences. There are games where you eventually succeed because you've leveled up enough, and there are games were you MIGHT eventually succeed because you practiced the same stupid boss fight over and over and over again, nevermind the pauses you had to take because literally anything else started to sound like more fun. Enter the Gungeon is the latter. And consulting the Wiki will only get you so far.

This does not make it a bad game. It doesn't make the Binding of Issac or Steredenn or Leap of Fate or any other game with this kind of "progression" bad, either, and it's a better game than Issac besides. It just makes them relentlessly frustrating, and they attract a certain kind of unhelpful crowd. If you were to ask for some kind of easy mode or what have you, you'd be shouted down with cries of "git gud", that most abjectly useless piece of "advice."

Gungeon is for the masochistic gamer who believes that a "challenge" is more important then having fun. If you were looking for something else, I recommend Rogue Legacy, Rogue Stormers, or Starward Rogue. Still, if you have patience, split-second reaction speeds, or a rudimentary grasp of cheat engine, it's absolutely worth your time.

The bosses and enemies in this game are incredibly tough to beat, and there's rarely a dull moment. This game demands everything from you, and getting better allows you to get further and further with each attempt. The gameplay loop of exploring dungeons, finding new guns/upgrades, and fighting enemies is engaging and rewards the player's skill and resourcefulness. Item and resource management in this game is key to success, and players are often given critical choices that can make or break a playthrough such as whether to buy an ammo refill, get a new gun, or buy health powerups. The game's graphics are also pure eye candy, utilizing impressive lighting effects and well designed and animated pixel art. The controls are also well implemented, with the ability to customize them to fit your preferences. The visual style and humor give the game some character. The absolute absurdity of some weapons and enemies as well as a plethora of pop culture references kept me chuckling throughout my time with the game. Overall, if you love the thrill of high stakes gunfights, searching for loot, or want a game that will challenge you without being too punishing, Enter the Gungeon is an excellent choice, and at $15, you're definitely getting your money's worth! The passives haven't seemed quite so impressive yet, but I'm not incredibly far into it. Dodge roll keeps the movement fast and reloading adds a simple yet game-changing mechanic, requiring more skill and tactics. Bosses that seem downright impossible sometimes, this really is a great game. I've played both TBOI and Nuclear Thrones extensively, and this beats them both out by a mile for me. More interesting level design and gameplay than TBOI, and more variation than Nuclear Throne. I felt I needed to make an account just to love on this game. Expand

The amount of depth put into each mechanic in this game is breathtaking, as alongside the huge amount of guns and items Enter The Gungeon has, it also make pairing items a game mechanic, increasing the amount of game-play possibilities from Humongous to nearly endless. I've finished only few of the objectives of the game and still have not even come close to mastering the mechanics of each enemy and boss.

It's a game you can pick up after a month-long break and have an amazing experience every single time.
The only thing I currently criticize is that when you die, it's an immense pace-breaker so you want to quit, only to return a few hours later. So I find it difficult to play in long sessions.

Sorry for this very unorganised review, I just wrote down the thoughts that popped into my head.

I bought this before it had add-ons, and the difference between it's launch and final versions is absolutely massive. I honestly don't remember some of the issues the game used to have anymore. But what's here now is an immensely addictive game with a stupid (good) amount of replay value.

    What's here:
    - Over 200 different guns that mostly function vastly differently. At least 100 active and passive items. Passive items are usually more important, but active items can completely change an outcome when used properly.
    - Synergies. SO MANY SYNERGIES. HUNDREDS OF SYNERGIES. LITERALLY EVERY POSSIBLE PUN AND REFERENCE YOU COULD EVER THINK OF IS A SYNERGY.
A perfect example: There's a gun called a Barrel. You can shoot fish out of it. "Shooting fish in a barrel," right? Well the synergy is literally a fish chilling in the barrel with it's own gun, shooting. So it's still "shooting fish in a barrel." THE PUN PLAY IS ON POINT, B. This game just gets me.
    * Even without synergies, some abilities work amazingly in conjunction with each other, leading to different playstyles in different playthroughs.
    - Unlockable playable characters. The final character you unlock automatically activates every synergy on every gun, which turns some weapons that were originally just okay into absolutely essential, potentially total overkill.
    - Unlockable game modes, including Challenge Mode (adds random handicaps to every room), Random Gun Mode, Rainbow Chest mode (gives you one high-quality gun or item at the start of every floor), and Fast Mode (always on for me).
    - Hidden floors. What was initially 5 floors with a 6th bonus floor is now potentially 10 floors, if you handle yourself well enough.
    - Randomly generated dungeons with the occasional curve-ball thrown in. I had no clue what a glitched chest was until I'd already died over 200 times. The Black Market is always exciting to find. Also, Sir Junken was a pleasant surprise! Of which there are many throughout this game.
    - Overall, a fair level of difficulty. Once it really sinks in that you're invincible for half a second during your dodge roll, you should be able to make it through with just about any weapon. My only complaint at this point is that I can't unlock a mode with twice as many enemies, since I already got the platinum trophy, every unlockable, and still occasionally get an itch to play this.

Only major downsides I can note off the top of my head are repetition, and a small number of guns and items aren't really worth it, which is inevitable with so many options. I almost always die when I pick up the red scarf. The special, nail gun, and pea shooter are pretty atrocious, even synergized.

Def recommend if you're looking for a fun, addicting time-waster.
Sometimes I go to games like this if I'm listening to something but still want to play a game. (Soundtrack isn't essential. Main theme makes me chuckle, though.)

The game is set on one fixed difficulty which makes it more likely for every player to have consistent experience, and lowers the odds of the player getting a run that’s incredibly easy or incredibly hard. Enter the Gungeon challenges its players to either get good fast or die even faster; after each and every defeat the player’s skill slightly increases which lets them get better and better until they finally beat the first of the five chambers. (The game continuously ramps up the difficulty more and more until they get to the last chamber). The game repeats the same core concepts such as clearing each room, finding the boss, and killing each boss to go to the next chamber; in order to prevent the game of getting repetitive the developers gave each chamber their own unique enemies, room-layouts, secrets, and bosses, to apply a fresh coat of paint on their core concepts. The developers also give players access to a massive plethora of guns and items that would give the players a new way of interacting with the game each and every time they go into a new run. Unfortunately this still means player’s run is still influenced by luck and if the player gets a powerful weapon right at the start then they can have an easier run with their overpowered weapon being their main source of power instead of their skill and time dedicated to the game. The gameplay consists of throwing the player into rooms upon rooms of enemies where their only chance of survival is dependent on how quick they can kill the enemy and how quick they are to evade the onslaught of bullets that are hurling towards them. When starting off, the player may choose between one of the 4 main characters, although each character has their own unique weapons and items, their style of play stays consistent between all of them. When the enemies are shooting bullets towards the player, their main methods of evading are by moving in between the cracks of their bullets with precise movements, dodge rolling through them in one direction, and using a one of two blanks that clear every bullet in a single room. If the player is unable to evade enough attacks and gets killed, they must restart the entire run regardless of how far they got previously. The game makes up for it’s insane difficultly with its goofy and childlike visual style; the entirety of the game revolves around guns and bullets with most the enemies relating to bullets in some shape or form. The game’s visual style is also supported by its own original and catchy sound track; the soundtrack for this game never gets annoying and each song builds up the game’s suspense and hype to give something for the player to enjoy while they are stuck in an environment that does it’s best to halt the player from reaching the end goal. The game’s atmosphere and mood are made less repetitive and more lively because of each and every NPC that the player can find while scouring around each chamber. The NPCs that are saved by the player usually hang out in the main hub of the game called “The Breach” and it’s there where the player selects a character, starts and ends the tutorial, and prepares to enter the Gungeon. Each NPC can do certain things, when given currency obtained form bosses called “credits”, such as sell items and guns that can appear in the player’s later runs, and enhance the game by adding new elements like double speed or randomized weapons and so on. At first glance the NPCs may not seem all that interesting, but their importance isn’t found in what they can do, but instead it’s found in how they do it. Take for example the two merchants Toroc and Professor Goopton. Professor Goopton is seen as a floating alien and when talked to speaks in a different language that is unknown to the player and sells items that are monster like such as the “Abyssal Tentacle”, “Monster Blood” and “Bug Boots”. Toroc is first seen by the player as a goblin that spends his time smoking cigarettes in the back of a military truck and sells items and guns that only relate war such as the AWP, M16, and a Lazer Sight. The small changes of personality and dialogue differentiate each NPC from another and therefore helped turn the tone and atmosphere from being a repetitive quest to beat the game, into a tale of a man wanting to test his luck and enter the Gungeon. Over all I would say that Enter the Gungeon is an excellent game and is worth a purchase. Expand

although the game has a really neat animation, good controls that can be used to with, and great graphics..

this game just doesn't really hit my favor, because of how slow it is just trying to get through everything, and it's deeply repetitive with rooms just being the same with different characters trying to shoot bullets at you as the player, nothing is ever fast in the game.

The game's humour, centred around, gun jokes, is present in every single element of the world, making for a very stylized and unique setting, that is both hilarious and fun to discover. This is a masterpiece. I've spent more than 20 DAYS playing Enter the Gungeon and mastering it was a very satisfying experience, thanks to is high skill ceiling, his complex resources and items balancing component and its addicting gameplay.

My only complaint is that one particular boss, perhaps the hardest in the entire game, has a face that has nothing to do with the rest of the game. It's a fun minigame, but it's at the end of the boss fight and you have never done it before. Reaching the boss fight requires a lot of grinding, so it does feel really unfair. This, in my opinion, prevents it from getting a perfect score.

i started playing this game about 2 years ago. I had abandoned it but from 2021 I started playing it really a lot. I find this game fantastic: full of secrets, lots of content, subtle but very entertaining irony, all this guns.

After four years of picking this game up now and then I finally completed it. Love the game overall but I would advise anyone to take it easy and just enjoy the ride. I still think very fondly of some of my runs where I would finally push through an obstacle that seemed impossible to me before, and really made me appreciate games that are challenging. The combat is so simple yet so difficult, but also really addictive. The game has a brilliant way of making every run different by having a pool of different boss battles you can get at the end of each chamber, something that keeps the game fresher than other rogues out there (looking at you Hades).

There is also a lot of humor in this game. Some of the item descriptions are genuinely hilarious and some gameplay mechanics or weapons just make you smile, although you sometimes feel like you are being trolled by the developers.

The sad thing is that some of that difficulty is contributed to just dumb luck with which weapons you get from chests so often when I did good I felt more lucky than a better player. Still this game is addictive as hell and a very good bang for your buck, you just need to be really patient with it. Also the music can get really on your nerves after a while, so maybe turn the music off and pop a playlist on that you can wiggle your fingers to.

The game is an amazing good art style, soundtrack, and guns. the game has a good amount of secrets and fun bosses to fight and don't even get me started about playing coop the game just becomes twice as fun. the only knock I can put against the game is the RNG but even with that is a fun game 9/10 would enter the gungeon again

This game is very good, however, it tries very hard to be more difficult and less fun than it is, especially with the random elements.

While the enemy patterns and boss fights are pretty much skill based, your experience each run varies WIDELY based on the items you get. Some items are great, some are just fine and the vast majority are borderline useless and unfun. I cannot express enough how much more fun rainbow runs are, because you can get some cool weapons and items and just experience more of what the game has to offer you. A lot of the time in regular runs I realized I just wasn't having fun because I'd take a lot more time to clear floors and bosses because I had to use the default weapon, or some terrible item and gun and run out of ammo for it. The ammount of times I'd restart a run on floor one/two because I got 3 D-C quality weapons in a row is more than I can remember.
This is not to mention a bunch of hidden mechanics and item descriptions and synergies left intentionally vague that will just result in you opening a wiki to see what it does. We are not on the SNES days anymore where these things would have to be figured out through repeated playthroughs and discussions with other players, there is not much reason to not have these things explained in game on a menu.
I kinda wanted to give a lower score, but since I've played so much there is definitely something engaging and fun to this game. It just tries really hard to not let you experience it.

TL;DR: Fun, hilarious, and cute. If you have had an iota of fun with a twin stick shooter or want to try one for the first time, GET THIS GAME.

DISCLAIMER: Got this game free on Epic Games. I had seen this game from afar, never committed to buying it. I'd never even enjoyed a twin-stick shooter before. I don't think this has changed my opinion on the genre, but I LOVE this game.

I had seen this game from afar, never committed to buying it. I'd never even enjoyed a twin-stick shooter before. I don't think this has changed my opinion on the genre, but I LOVE this game.

Everything in this game is stylized to the max, with every enemy being a gun reference. The enemies are bullets that hold guns that shoot bullets, and your job is to shoot bullets at the bullets while dodging their bullets while not taking contact damage from the gun-weilding bullets. Sometimes your bullets are actually fish. Sometimes your gun has a mermaid tail. Sometimes it's a reference to a unique gun from some other media, like Halo or Hyper Light Drifter or Judge Dredd. And sometimes your gun is a bullet that shoots guns that shoots more bullets, so you can shoot guns full of bullets at the gun-weilding bullets.

The bosses are hysterically named and genuinely difficult to fight. There's a gorGUN, or AMMOconda or a king bullet stitting on his flying throne of guns.

There is so much to unlock in this game. Besides your 4 starting characters, there are 4 more unlockable characters. There's an actual story in here worth digging for. There's like 4 different extra modifiers for different ways to play, like a Turbo mode that speeds everything up or a challenge mode that adds a random challenge to every room and boss.

The one and only beef I have with this game is that some of the quests you have to do to unlock everything can get a little tedious. And that's a small beef for something that a player not interested in unlocking EVERYTHING will not even endure. The fact that I could get some 40 hours of gameplay in what is essentially a roguelike with a small fixed number of floors before finding something tedious is a testament to how fun this game as a whole is. I've unlocked everything and I still play this regularly just for fun.

An illegitimate child of Binding of Isaac and Nuclear Throne – a wonderfully animated twin-stick shooter with randomly generated world, vast choice of weapons and pixel graphics. It’s a shame it didn’t inherit Isaac’s atmosphere and Nuclear Throne’s pace. [06/2016, p.44]
