It was called Elemental. In this game, every unit was singular with its own unique items and equipment. Players could design their own cities, leveraging the resources and magic of the world. The world itself was transformable through magic with players able to mold it to their liking. The technical challenges in getting all this to fit into a 32-bit engine led the game to being re-designed and ultimately released in 3 different games that focused on key elements of the design: War of Magic, Fallen Enchantress, and Sorcerer King.

Now, thanks to a remastered 64-bit engine, Stardock has finally been able to take the best parts of the three games and bring them together; as well as add features that were cut before War of Magic was released including building cities to leverage the magic of the world.

Create a character and lead your civilization in this epic, turn-based fantasy strategy game. Design units, research technology, learn magical spells, send adventurers on quests, craft magical items, trade or battle other civilizations for dominion of worlds of your imagination.

If you choose to take on Elemental: Reforged, you'll get a competent 4X game with slightly dated graphics and not the most knowledgeable of AI opponents. Thanks to the fact that you do so much else during the course of the game, it rarely gets boring. Although this title is the best in its series, I think certain competitors like Age of Wonders 4 offer sharper experiences today.

Elemental: Reforged is a decent attempt to make a game that was too ambitious for 2010 relevant for a modern audience. It looks better than it did back then, but not by much, and its attempt at world building is hampered by the limited presentation. The core 4X mechanics are strong if a little traditional, and the game features an extensive array of customization and choices, ensuring that no two games will play out the same. Gamers who liked any of the older Elemental titles will be happy with the modern version. There’s enough variety to enjoy hundreds of hours of strategic moves and tactical battles. But Elemental: Reforged doesn’t feature any big innovation and will struggle to keep newcomers interested.
