Dwerve is a tower defense dungeon crawler RPG where you play as a young dwarf tinkerer who adventures into a ruined kingdom and unearths the lost technologies of the ancient warsmiths: turrets and traps. These are the only weapons that can protect the dwarves from Witch-Queen Vandra and her army of bloodthirsty trolls and monstrous creatures hellbent on conquering the surface.

If Dwerve is what a tower defense dungeon-crawling hybrid looks like, sign me up for the genre. With its fun and dynamic gameplay, the game managed to quickly dispel any reservations I had about this type of game prior to playing it. Although sometimes a bit too straightforward for my tastes lore-wise, the game is a fun journey through a fascinating world. And the feeling of winning a 1 v infinite, eventually triumphing against seemingly impossible odds, is one beyond compare.

Dwerve is a difficult game to put down. It incorporates the strategic aspects of tower defense with the reactive dodging of action games and fully reaps the benefits of both elements. Having to approach each of the varied combat encounters with tactical and mechanical skill creates a layer of engagement that not every game can reach, urging you to keep playing and tinker with your approach all the way up to its conclusion. Despite its somewhat lacking storyline, Dwerve is a fun, challenging trek through dangerous dungeons and dwarven history that carries itself with aplomb.

An exceedingly charming tower defence and action-adventure fusion with a nice artstyle and strong writing. Full of good ideas with a strong central mechanic. However, a cluster of frustrations arise from it, with the key problem being the lack of a plan B once the tower defence portion fails.
