Dreams of Another mixes action and adventure in a dreamlike world where you destroy bokeh-like globes of light to reveal environments and objects with souls. The protagonist, Man in Pajamas, guided by Wandering Soldier, alternates between exploration, simple puzzles, and shooting sections. The mechanics revolve around the concept of “No Creation Without Destruction”: you can create only after destroying. The levels, however, are small and fragmented, interrupted by frequent returns to the main menu. Enemies and bosses are harmless, and the dialogue is slow and repetitive. Artistic and original, but suffering from a static pace and lackluster gameplay.

Dreams of Another is destined to be a polarizing title, but those who gel with its bizarre storytelling and gameplay will find an experience like no other. Q-Games continues to carve its own niche in the gaming landscape, and fans of the studio's previous titles will find much to love here.

At first, I had no idea what to expect from Dreams of Another, as screenshots and trailers don’t make it justice. It seems like a generic, pixelated shooter, although the game is much more than that. It’s a game that focuses on creating a great, different experience, and it mostly sticks the landing in my opinion. Yes, it’s not flawless, nor does it try to be. These days, most people want to play titles like Call of Duty or Battlefield, just to blow off some steam. Dreams of Another manages to bring us an entirely different experience, where we question our meaning on this planet, and it becomes very meditative at times. I don’t think Dreams of Another is for everyone, it won’t fit the backlog of action-focused gamers. But if you like puzzles, philosophy and exploration, it’s certainly a title that you should play.

Dreams of Another is an admirable mess of a game. Its narrative is poorly executed through truly terrible dialogue and performances, it’s incapable of offering a creative alternative to its exploration beyond shooting, and its philosophical musings wouldn’t be out of place on r/im14andthisisdeep. But, for those players who decide to dream this particular dream, Dreams of Another offers an eclectic kaleidoscope of bizarre artistic motifs, a fascinatingly surreal mood and a (possibly entirely unintentional) thematic density that is still worth treasuring amidst the haze of its voxel world.

Dreams of Another offers a touching and thought-provoking narrative that invites players to reflect inwardly, exploring themes of identity, loss, and purpose. Yet despite its emotional depth and strong storytelling, its shortcomings as a game, particularly in core gameplay design and engagement, ultimately hold it back from reaching true greatness.

Dreams of Another is a beautiful experience, albeit one that is sure to be polarizing. If you’re looking for a relaxing, thought-provoking, linear experience that feels like a virtual art exhibit, you’ll likely enjoy this game. For those looking for more of a traditional “game,” however, Dreams of Another can feel slow, repetitive, and is probably something you’d want to skip.

Dream of Another tells you a story, rather than showing it to you. It can be beautiful, sad, funny, and provoking, but ultimately it was underwhelming. Or maybe I just don’t get it.
