My original guess was that it was going to pander to console players by making it slower ( I thought this after I saw the scroll wheel that slowed down game play.) It has been a long while since I have seen a shooter with intelligent map design, design which rewards players for playing the game at a faster pace, in fact I rarely found myself stopping in between combat, if at all. There is secrets galore in this game to. Not only that but the game itself is absolutely beautiful. From the large bosses to the small imps for pistol fodder every part of the game does not lack in design, This game reinvigorated my faith in ID. The online has obviously improved since the beta (Its great, i didn't get the chance to play the beta but I heard complaints) With a larger selections of weapons. In fact I see so many modding possibilities for the multiplayer on PC. After playing leagues and leagues of modern shooters this is the most refreshing multiplayer I have played in a while and will suck in hours and hours of my time I haven't really played around with snap map yet, but Ill be looking forward to it!. Anyway this reinvigorated the franchise and will forever be known as a classic, Amazing job id, i look forward for more Expand

This game is outstanding. Take the best of the old and crank it up exponentially. My official review is it made my trigger finger grow chest hair. Anyone who gives this game a sub par review is just a troll that hates life.

People saying the game is linear.....I have to say they have no clue what they're talking about. There are many twists and turns, secrets to be found, the game rewards exploration by netting you currency to upgrade gear, armor, etc.

Amazing graphics, you can even give the game a gritty film grain that takes you into a sort of grindhouse satan/hell exploitation kind of atmosphere. Music is phenomenal, good sound overall, with plenty of texture and makes killing enemies really satisfying.

Campaign is a blast and the full package. Multiplayer is also quite a bit of fun to play, the loadouts are not my favorite setup, but they make sense - and take a lot of the weapon spawn camping aspect out of the game (which is rampant in other frag fest games like this one.)

Honestly I was in shock at how thoroughly polished this game felt. Negative reviews on here seem really silly, to the point I feel the negative ratings are there strictly to bring the score down or troll - you cannot loose with this title.

I played the original Doom when it came out. I'm in technology and I'm a developer. The creativity and finesse this game was developed with are staggering. I don't really typically like FPSes or games like this. I've evolved to simulations and serious games. I have to say though.. this game is JUST FUN! Some aspects (like finding all the hidden areas) are seriously challenging. The notes about certain technologies and weapons are very creative. The levels are not ment to hand anything to anyone.. just like the original Doom. I am in no way disappointed with my purchase. I plan to go through the campaign again in the hardest setting.. God help me.

There’s an almost childish petulance in some quarters where a negative opinion conflicts with the majority? It's usually unsubstantiated elitism crap as well. You're either old enough and haven't played the originals or you're too young to have a valid opinion on them.

For the record, I got into gaming in the 70’s when Pong was out. I actually had and still have my old pong machine. I’ve had every machine under the sun since, from the woodchip Atari & Intellivision through ZX80/81, Speccy, C64, ST, Amiga and all the consoles all the way to now.

I was in my mid 20’s when Shareware Doom released and it was a revelation and was the reason for me buying my first gaming PC (386 or 486) for £1500! Doom was a landmark title for many reasons and along with the release of the PS1, is perhaps the only other gaming release which stands apart as a revolution in gaming.

Yes, Wolfenstein came first but, that title was pretty much overlooked due to the fact PC Gaming back then wasn’t hugely popular and tbh, it wasn’t that great either. Doom in one fell swoop changed all that with its stellar innovation because 25 years ago, nothing like it had ever been seen before. It beared no resemblance to its older brother Wolfenstein, which was the bedrock for Doom. Gone were the blue walls and Nazi’s and in their place was Hell. The sounds, the graphics and blindingly fast game play were simply stunning not only to play but also to watch. That Shareware title (and the fact it was SW demonstrated that ID weren’t confident of its success) would define the entire FPS genre. Quite simply, it was a revolution.

Fast forward to now. Do I still want to play Doom? No I don’t. Why? Because in plain and simple terms, the mechanics of Doom are literally last century and it’s glaring limitations are cruelly exposed when stood against titles that have since improved vastly upon it. It’s like asking would I prefer to play Outrun ahead of Dirt Rally (no I wouldn’t).

Against my better judgement and mainly because of the glowing feedback on here, Steam and elsewhere, I downloaded it. I honestly wish I hadn’t because some things are best left in the past. I wanted it to succeed (which I suppose it has tbh). I wanted it to be great. I wanted ID to transport me back to those halcyon days of running round shooting endless Imps and Cacodemons. It doesn’t do that though. It certainly tries and whilst the game play somewhat resembles Doom of old, it’s not what I want anymore. After a not inconsequential 10 hours of playing (well over halfway), I’ve had enough of it and getting to that 10 hour mark has been a slog.

Do you know when I know a game isn’t holding my interest? I get fidgety, my mind starts wandering to other things and my legs start bouncing on my feet under the desk. This usually happens when I have to read a text book or perform some mundane task in preparation for something I have to learn. That is what I’m experiencing with Doom! I’m struggling to enjoy it in any meaningful way and I suspect that is because I’ve been here before, a long time ago. For want of a better description – it’s generic and dare I say it, quite boring.

Maybe it’s my age or maybe my gaming tastes have changed but, the lack of intelligence this game requires is almost insulting. From the get go, you run a few corridors and shoot some spawning enemies, then you enter an arena and keep shooting until you’ve defeated X amount of mobs. You then repeat the process of a few more corridors and another arena to defeat another X amount of mobs… rinse and repeat. This mechanic was great twenty odd years ago because it was ground breaking. It’s not great now and in fact, it’s downright decrepit and it shows. Gaming, and FPS gaming in particular has changed far beyond what Doom started all those years ago.

Whilst I’m happy that many are enjoying it and appear pleased that it’s exactly what they wanted, I’d seriously have to question this because I'm finding it mind numbing. As said, I’m 10 hours in and I can’t last more than 30-40 minutes before my legs start bouncing and the need to load up Dark Souls 3, TR or Uncharted 4 takes over.

At best it is a very mediocre FPS built on what is a relic of a game play model and I suspect that had this been another game made by any other company, public opinion would not have been so gushing towards it. The fact it is ‘Doom’ by ‘ID’ means the rose tinted fanboy brigade will just about accept anything and proclaim it as the best thing since sliced bread even when it isn’t.

In 6 months’ time, I think people will look back on Doom and probably admit that it was a very average, generic and dare I say it, boring shooter with zero depth and which required zero intelligence.

    A shame.

As with all negative reviews I'm sure this one will be quickly voted down by the paid tro##s that lurk here. I purposely misspelled that word to avoid getting reported for abuse as my last review that stated similar was reported for using the word weir#o. Seriously Metacritic how do you not know this?

Doom isn't a terrible game, it's just a boring FPS with nothing revolutionary or even interesting. I'm actually so unimpressed I don't even want to write a review. I just want to complain about Bethesda paying people to tro## Metacritic and giving this game a 10 out of 10.

Although this game is a bit different as it seems even the paid reviewers don’t want to rate this game at release. Bethesda is quickly using up its creditably capital. Fallout 4 was probably their last great cash grab. The next Elder Scrolls better knock the socks off the world because you won’t get away with this garbage a third time. Funny how the mighty gets greedy and destroys the heart and soul of what made them great, talent.

The secrets are neat, like original doom secrets. The multiplayer is expansive, and snapmap is one of the best level editors for console.

The game is damn fun. And immersive. Doom (2016) makes doom 3 look really quite poor.

I'm writing a quick review based on my first few hours of gameplay in campaign mode only. If you're thinking about buying this game, maybe this information will help you decide.

First, let's cut the crap. This game is not a 9 or 10, nor is it a 1 or 2. I'm giving it a 7 for the reasons listed below.

This is a reboot of the original DooM, nothing more and nothing less. If you were expecting something that plays like DooM 3, please adjust your expectations. This game is fast paced, the enemies are numerous, and you must sustain yourself by picking up the ammo and life items the enemies drop when you kill them. Again, just like the original DooM of yore. You also pick up key cards and look for hidden caches. Nothing new here for veterans of DooM.

If I were to compare this to other games, it is a mix of original DooM, DooM 3 (in the graphics, atmosphere, and sound department) and Space Marine. The combat gives you plenty of choices, but the funnest option is to set up your "Glory kills" with your guns. That is, you stun the enemy with a gun shot, then finish them with your R3 button at closer range. Combat is fluid and it works, in my opinion.

Here is what the game does not have:
    Aiming down the sights
    Cut scenes
    Very much dialogue

All of which is a plus for me, not a minus. If you like "cinematic" games like The Last of Us, this game is probably not for you. If you like games like DooM 1 and 2, Half Life, and Metroid, this game is probably for you. I've always considered long dialogues and cut scenes in video games to be a waste of my time. I like the story to be told by exploring the game world and playing the game.

Whether or not you want to wait for a price drop (or skip this altogether) depends on how much you loved (or did not love) the run and gun style of older shooters.

Again, I have not dipped my toed into multi player yet. That could alter my review and if it does I'll update this review.

It's an ok shooter game. Good graphics, fast paced action and it gets challenging at times. The soundtrack is also really good.

The levels are pretty linear however. You pretty much only move forward, so the game basically plays itself, instead of making you think where you need to go next. I also don't think that it's worth the full price, as it isn't really that innovative in any way.

I can't help but compare it to Wolfenstein: New Order. People, Doom 2016 HAS NOTHING over W:NO. The latter is simply a masterpiece with tons of cut scenes, tons of story, tons of dialogues and npc interactions. Doom is about shooting monsters through narrow corridors, that's it. Doom 2016 is not even scary like Doom 3. Doom 2016 is just an average run of the mill shooter that could have been made just as well by Nobody Studios and not ID.

Also it's very short, about 10 hours.

Multiplayer? Oh god, it's Quake. If you like to play such a basic and simple shooter like Quake in the year 2016 when we have CoD, Counterstrike and Overwatch, by all means, do play it, but the majority of players will just see it the same as they see the singleplayer: dull and unimpressive.

Save your money. This game is not worth it. I have no idea what did they do with the budget, this game feels like it was made with a really small budget for an AAA game.

You get a scripted scene for every little thing in this game. Pickup a new weapon and the game showcases you the gun for like 5 seconds until you can move again, you open a door and you watch a scripted animation of the player opening the door and ofc while this all is happening, you can't do anything :/
There are perks too, yes guys you get perks which give you ability to know where all secrets are etc and most of the pickups come only through glorykilling and thus game forces you to glorykill. Forexample
ammo is ridiciolously low (20 max for shotgun) and this forces the player to use glorykill system to get more ammo. You can't fail in this game since the AI enemies are dead stupid and just stand still when you shoot them. You have a locked door in your face and the keycard is "hidden" right 100 meters next to it in a oneway cave. Seriously?

Yes, it's a console game through and thoroughly. So I can't recommend this under any circumstances since it's not a Doom game and most definitely not a PC game either. 0/10

The story is minimal - and I felt that it's only reason for being there is to somehow explain the demon enemies you need to face. And those are very familiar doom enemies, just in a modern high-res edition. They look great, they've got distinct attack patterns and fighting them is just pure fun.

The graphics are really well done. Especially the enemy design. But environments are nothing to be ashamed of ass well. Both hell and Mars base are really great looking and well designed.

The soundtrack is amazing. I heard people prising it before but actually experiencing in in-game is an experience of it's own. High paced heavy metal makes your blood pumping. The other sound effects are top notch as well - especially guns sound really satisfying.

Hands down a really really cool game with lots of fun to have.

Here's the meat of the burger: gameplay. Crazy, loony and berserk madness. These demons are NOT dumb. Well sometimes they are but for the most part they won't stand there and get killed. They're quick, resourceful and armed to the fangs. They're ugly and mean and merciless. The level designs are clever and vast. The navigation and maps are simple and effective so you never get lost or confused. The arsenal is nuts. So many weapons. Where does he put them all?! I did have an issue with the customization as it was TOO elaborate at times. You get two types of grenades which is fine but I could've used a third since I never found out what the Argent grenade did exactly. I rarely used the hologram but it was a nice addition to the equipment stack. Lots of final upgrades require challenges and those are pretty hard. Plenty of hidden stuff (look for grates and floor/ceiling panels BTW) hidden everywhere that can be found on the maps. As for the aesthetics: just astonishing. The environments are detailed and rendered perfectly. The lighting is awesome looking. The sound effects are crisp and varied. The voice over work is very good and well written. There's not much of it but it works when its there. There are little to no faults here. It's just that amazing. Expand

DOOM is a re-imagining of the genre-defining classic shooter which manages to stay true to its roots whilst brining in a healthy dose of modern enhancements.

As with classic Doom, health, armor and ammo are pick-up based (no regeneration), there are only 10 weapons which are unlocked throughout the game (via exploration), there is no reloading, there are very few cutscenes and it's just fast-paced demon-slaying action all the way. Although on the surface it sounds like it's extremely repetitive, there are some excellent additions to keep the experience more entertaining. Firstly, as with all good classic shooters, there is a clear emphasis on exploration. You are rewarded for exploring the game's vast levels not just with meaningless collectibles and background reading, but with useful resources that will help you develop your demon-slaying capabilities. For example, each weapon can be customised with two weapon mods found from Field Drones, and each attachment can be upgraded using upgrade points, and even then there is a challenge for each mod to further enhance its capabilities. You can also upgrade the Doom Marine's suit and capabilities - again, this is almost exclusively from exploration. There are also Runes - mini challenges with a given set of conditions in an arena which, if completed, unlocks a "perk" (you can have three equipped at once) which can then be further enhanced by completing the challenges. Each level also has its own three challenges to complete. There are even sections of classic Doom maps to be found in each level! So to get the point across: there are some light RPG elements which are non-disruptive but also stay true to the spirit of the original. Furthermore, dying does not reset progress towards challenges, so it doesn't feel like a grind.

The campaign is a fair length - especially if, like me, you try to explore every last nook and cranny of the levels. With an exploration-intensive playstyle, expect to spend around an hour minimum per level and there are 13 levels. It is best played on Ultra-Violence (the hardest starting difficulty available) since it feels challenging and intense as it should but becomes easier when you've got loads of upgrades later on in the game.

In terms of performance, DOOM is extremely well-optimized on both Vulkan and OpenGL 4.5 graphics APIs. Even on a modest gaming rig (GTX 1060 6GB, i5-3470, 12GB RAM) the holy grail of 4K Ultra 60 FPS is achievable (though admittedly with around 75% resolution scaling) on OpenGL, and around 130 FPS at 1080p Nightmare settings.

In terms of additional content, DOOM has a multiplayer component which is, as expected, an arena shooter with the usual game modes and extremely light customisation. Whilst this sounds great, it isn't especially balanced because of some consumable "perks" which put higher-level players at an advantage. The gameplay is also not satisfying in my opinion, and it just feels like a mess. I'm usually a fan of "tacked-on" multiplayers due to their simplicity, but Doom's doesn't do it for me; though perhaps more skilled players who enjoy games like Quake and Unreal Tournament might enjoy it.

Perhaps the most novel feature of DOOM is SnapMaps; allowing you to create your own levels complete with their own objectives, enemeies, AI behaviour, pickups etc. The interface and tutorials for doing these are fairly good, but as with all "game creators", it is extremely time-consuming to do something simple. Still, it's a nice addition, though I haven't seen anything particularly stand out made by the community.

Overall, DOOM 2016 is exactly the kind of game I hoped it would be. Everything from the weapons, gameplay, enemies, levels and even the option to have that classic centred weapon pose (as opposed to the ubiquitous right-handed pose of modern shooters) are reminiscent of the classic Doom games, and I'm pleased to say that Doom's spirit has aged beautifully. This is a shining example of how to modernise a classic game series without losing its essence.

It follows the tradition of Doom, but with several upgrades. A kill'em all fiesta with weapon and armor enhancements, secret areas, collectibles. Nice graphics, music, sound. I would just like a bit more of a story, but it's... Doom.

    We’re doomed, I tell ya

If you’re familiar with DOOM 3 you’ll have a pretty good idea what to expect from DOOM 2016, although, in truth, it’s actually a little different, if memory serves me. There’s plenty to like here if you enjoy fast-paced arena-style battles with loads of enemies, big guns, and masses of demon gore. That’s basically what the DOOM games do and they do it very well.

There is a story here, although I tended to forget about it most of the time because I was too busy jumping, strafing, and trying to stay alive. I seem to recall that the story in D3 had more impetus and that the combat was more diverse in style, but I could be remembering incorrectly (I’ll have to play it again to see). DOOM 2016 looks pretty good and it ran well (3 crashes in total, always alt-tab related). The music is fantastic and perfectly suited to the game. Personally, I find boss fights a little tedious and annoying but luckily there aren’t too many here, and those that there are didn’t irritate me, as they have, at times, in other games. Overall this is a good addition to the DOOM canon; it’s a blast from start to finish and is thoroughly enjoyable.

For what it tries to be, it is that perfectly. Very long single player campaign with fantastic art design. A lot of polish went into this. Controls responsive, Weapons feel very satisfying. Music score is a bit adolescent and could have done with some subtlety. Perfect collision detection. If you don't come expecting a cerebral, but rather a visceral, experience, you won't be disappointed.

I should start off by saying that I bought this game on Humble Bundle for $19.79. I don't know that I would spend full retail for this game.

With that said, I really enjoyed this game! I'm not a die-hard DOOM follower, but that didn't prevent me from following the campaign and enjoying it fully. My experience was mostly bug-free and the game looks amazing on my i5-3570k and GTX 780

My experience was mostly bug-free and the game looks amazing on my i5-3570k and GTX 780 SC. They keep the campaign fun by allowing a little bit of customization with gun mods and specialization points that you can use, to compliment your play style.

What caught me by surprise was that my girlfriend actually got pretty heavy into the game. She's not a gamer by any means, and she struggles with the movement/double-jump, but I can tell she likes the combat. The "glory kills" feel very similar to Shadow of Mordor, but are just as unique and fun. The campaign also offers challenges and rune trials to keep things interesting.

My only criticism of the game is simply that the campaign didn't feel super long, and there isn't a whole lot of replay value for me.

Its an excellent action game, a pure first person shooter. Graphic and game-play are flawless. However, it lacks a good story, and the player has no connection with characters. After few hours, the game becomes monotonous and has nothing more to show. After all its a great game like the whole series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. DOOM (2016) ... the only FPS to give meaning for single player.
Let me sum my review to pros and cons and then (if you want , you can read my whole review for my reasons as to why the game is so GOOD !!)
    9/10

    pros
    -Great single player
-Weapons are unique and and awesome
    -soundtrack is pure BADASS
-Enemy variety !! something that's missing in alot in FPS shooters these days.
-Fast pace combat that feels like Devil may Cry with guns rather than swords
-custom maps by users is always great

    cons
    -multiplayer is not competitve
    -very unbalance to be honest
    -needs more boss battles

DOOM delivers what game should be like ... fun and chellenging.
It kinda feels like playing DMC4 with its fast pace combat.
You always need to move , different weapons behave different and camping on enemy AI is discouraged by how the game was create for you.
Get close and RIP AND TEAR UNTIL ITS DONE !!!
dogde, shoot , jump , glory kill and move to the next objective.

This leads me to the story. I'll be honest I didn't listen to the story narrative given by the robot guy , the evil woman and that demonic voice.
The game gives you the option to simple speedrun throu the game if you just care about playing the game.
How ? well , instead of being stuck in a cutsence or a walking section , you get listen to the narrative played in stations around the levels' map.
This goes very well with the main character , Doom guy/slayer (You).
So far , I heard that the story was great.

Of course , I can't avoid the big plus that this FPS game has over TONS of FPS shooters which is enemy variety.
Each enemy type fights different and you need to know who is the most threatning before you go and slay the others.
This comes to play heavily in hard difficulties , so get a grip on your mouse and GIT GUD !

Last is the multiplayer.... this wasn't heavily developed with thought.
    Its too chaotic.

I was looking forward that Doom online might be like the old Halo 3/2 multiplayer.
No class loadout (ONE default "loadout"), just weapon spawns. this could have made the online much better rather than coping the old COD formula.

I can already tell you this , the ability to give players to transform to demons that instant kill you will enrage you more than being killed by BFG blast.

luckily , replay value has its root in arcade more and custom maps made by users.
I played alot in arcade more to get S ranking (Slayer not Stylish XD).
Kinda of the reason why I think this game is DMC with guns rather than swords.

so overall .... the first FPS game that is par with the Halo games (except 4 and 5).

From the opening of the game when Doom guy Smashes the com link before cocking his gun and entering the environment of mars till the end, was non stop fun for me. Typically I do not really like shooters and prefer games like Devil May Cry or soul series where the combat is more calculated. But doom truly outshines it's restrictions of being a game for the original fans of just constant shooting with it's Glory Killing Finishers, and that was a serious hook for my enjoyment. Story wise It is not really deep, but it does well setting up a fresh start after all this time.

Highly recommended for people who just wanna get into the game from the off set as it is one of the games that u just log in hit continue and you are into the action, designed for fun. That being said Exploration is encouraged which is a positive in my book as well as challenging enough combat from normal to higher difficulties which is key since all you are doing is firing a gun and Oh Moving... keep Moving... It is your best Strategy.

Don't get me wrong, this game is phenomenal.
Something about it, though, is overly polished.
They were so true to the original, except in one place: the pacing. Doom 2016 becomes completely predictable because the (well-made) music is synchronized with the action. It's always the same, you always get a checkpoint when you're done, its cool the first few times but they use this mechanic

Doom 2016 becomes completely predictable because the (well-made) music is synchronized with the action. It's always the same, you always get a checkpoint when you're done, its cool the first few times but they use this mechanic over and over again the entire game.
You enter an area, the intense music comes on, you defeat a wave of demons, the music crescendoes into some epic stuff, you defeat the big mega demons (quite easily with a few rockets, gauss rifle shots or one big BFG blast) , and then the music dies down and you roam the level freely, knowing that nothing's gonna jump out at you because the music isn't hinting at it.
You get more than enough ammo and upgrades, more than you'll ever need. (caveat: I should have played the game on Nightmare, didn't wanna start over but Ultraviolence is WAY too easy)
The original Doom just had monsters everywhere, they didn't come in predictable waves that you clear out. It was just an endless stream of monsters without the music conveniently telling you what's gonna happen next. I wish they would do ths in Doom Eternal but probably not gonna happen cause console fans

It's super fun and, while it's hardcore, you don't feel like a victim here, because of atmosphere the game creates. Conversely your enemies are the ones who should fear as a protagonist is a brutal hard person which wants to destroy all evil and nothing else. The game is not easy, you just get this feeling while playing it and it's good.

The gameplay is excellent and pros compensate cons of the game.
    The bad things are:
    - No GPS. Adding it would definitely make the game even better. Its absense quite often forces you to go here and there in a search of the right way. It's not hard to find, but simply wastes some of your time. It's a perfect shooter, so making this particular aspect of the game a bit more friendly to the player would have been nice of devs.
    - No manual saves. Saves/loads/checkpoints are also unfriendly to the player.
    - Some bugs still in 2017/2018. F.e., a critical one - finishing opponents sometimes makes you stuck in textures.
    - More than 50% of weapon and armor upgrades are inappreciable.
It also would have been nice if there were more different weapons and bosses in the game. And of course single player compaign could have been longer than it is right now. No replayability when you finish the game on normal difficulty.

But, as written above it's still a perfect pure FPS: perfect shooter gameplay, excellent soundtrack, nice graphics, optimisation and the story doesn't distract you from killing everything in sight, but also keeps you going on.

I understand Gordon did his own take on the soundtrack and some aspects of the ost are decent, but I am just a pure rock fan, which means, no dubstep or anything too electronic/remixy. Other than this personal preference of mine, the game is very solid and I would recommend to fans of the FPS genre.

To keep it simple, DOOM is everything a sci-fi shooter should strive to be without being too extreme while still offering a unique environment to explore and enough monsters to get your fix of action at the same time.

DOOM plays very similarly to Serious Sam and offers a wide variety of weapons and customization similar to the Dead Space series for you to tailor your own experience. The game doesn't try to force you to do anything in particular and you're free to approach fights however you like, although it's recommended to take a more aggressive and active approach over a defensive one. Checkpoints in the game are sometimes a bit unforgiving, which means that if you die, you may be forced to redo an area all over again.

In essence, DOOM is a game that is better described through actual gameplay than words. It's a bit easy on Normal, but I recommend that difficulty for controller users. You can always tweak the difficulty to your pleasing. The game is definitely more enjoyable with a keyboard and mouse though, and feels more engaging at a higher difficulty. The game is also quite lengthy, always keeping you wondering when you will reach the end.

DOOM is a hidden gem that many will overlook thinking that it's dark or fearsome, even though it really isn't. I give it an 8 out of 10 for being a magnificently solid arena shooter. I haven't found any reason to rate it a 9 yet, as the game doesn't go the extra mile to deserve it. Regardless, I'm genuinely surprised that Bethesda put out a game as well-made as this, especially since they're not known for arena shooters.

In terms of issues, the game did freeze a few times for me, which was a little annoying. I experienced two bugs near the end of the game where the game wouldn't progress and would force me to have to waste time redoing fights. The game also stuttered quite often, and the crosshair sensitivity would frequently drop, forcing me to have to drag my mouse to make wide turns.

DOOM is a game for people that want to be challanged. The different difficulty levels actually change up the game instead of just changing some numbers for weaponstats. Higher difficulty = more enemies.

The story is basically irrelevant - which is a good thing. There is some humor involved, though. At one point the game even mocks the player by locking him in a room to listen to a stupid robot explaining useless stuff - just like Call of Duty and all the other "Cinematic" games. id Software knows its playerbase. :)

I really hope for a sequel.

The gameplay is simple but hella fun and addicting, the several types of demons r amazing, the brutality of this game kinda feels casual after the first hour but that's not sth I rly care about. The boss fights were quite fun but maybe a little bit too easy (on normal mode) - the hardest unit in this game (for me) is probably the shield boi that can srsly piss you off... In total I give this game a ten out of ten - The only reason this was close of being an actual 9 for me, is probably because this campaign kinda felt short... I mean, holy **** the game catched me so hard - I couldnt stop playing it but suddenly, after beating the last boss - which was a little bit anti-climatic as he was hella easy on normal difficulty ... or did I play on easy? I was quite disappointed in how fast everything ended... But even that isn't that big of a deal as you have then the choice to just replay the game but on higher difficulty, or play the multiplayer or play that special ''arcade'' mode... In total I can recommend this gamr to every shooter fan. This is the most unexpected masterpiece I've ever played.

This isI'm not sure if father time will be too lenient on something like "Doom 2016" seeing as its barely been 7 years and it already feels pretty old hat to revisit after the first playthrough shortly after its release. I can stare at my time played in disbelief all I want, but there it is saying I've merely played 20 hours over the course of my sixty dollar purchase way back when. This is offensively SHORT compared to the deafening and possibly disturbing amount of hours I've dumped into Shadow Warrior 2, Quake, Quake 2, Duke Nukem and the original 1993 Doom individually. So was it just me? Did everyone think this game was amazing when it first came out? I mean it had a multiplayer mode that died shortly after release, and the campaign was mostly good till you got so beefed up and weapon upgraded that the entire last act felt more like a waltz through the park than a seige upon the forces of Hell.

That story too was a huge issue. Seeing as it basically has a dumb, pointless and what I suppose the developers might call "cheeky" "locking you in a room while a character talks at you" cutscene segments, I get the feeling they were trying to tell a serious story, realized this was "Doom" and decided to just frame it as ironic instead. Yeah guys, we get it you spent a lot of money on all these voice actors and wrote a lot of dialogue, but strangely people are still playing the wibbly-wobbly cardboard cut-out enemy version of Doom with mods without any concerns for voice actors or their contracts. I genuinely detest the soundtrack throughout considering its essentially blaring during every excursion or mini arena duke out and generally lacks a lot of restraint besides being pretty entertaining to listen to outside of game play. Its so overbearing at times that I couldn't focus on what was happening, and given how a lot of the smaller enemies can literally slide into Doom guy from a few feet away or don't always telegraph their attacks, can lead to some frustrating sections.

Even today, after several playthroughs I don't remember anything about the game or most of the levels. Coincendentally the opening is memorable if only for the first few key cards attached to random lifeless appendages, but after that it gets kind of predictable and stale to be quite honest. Every room triggers a small skirmish, every keycard is a small puzzle to obtain, and the glory kills don't exactly do anything but take up play time and generally draw fights on longer than they needed to be. I'm glad they look amazing, because otherwise I would've just as well wished for an option in the game included by developers to just turn them off entirely. Visually pinning down "nu-doom" is kind of difficult since at times it is quite bland. I know you'll probably hate me for saying so, but "Doom 3" was clearly still referenced for the level design, and they are strikingly similar outside of the obvious availability of light in the latter as opposed to the lack of it from the former. This is perplexing since even some of the enemy designs were sort of scrambled between old and new to create a slightly characterized cartoonier 3D rendered version.

The weapons are all kind of lame upon revisiting the gunfights, and merely become less interesting to use as the game goes on because by the time you have some of the giant minigun upgrades or the rocket launcher or even the double-barreled shotgun, its all you'll be using for most of the last act. Its a real that not only was "Half-life 2" filled with an entire weapon roster of bland, uninspired generic boom-boom guns, but that a game 12 years later has barely moved beyond the bland itself, only limiting grenades for some reason and leaving the rest of the action reduced to drawn out cinematic gory death animations- often closer to "QTE's" than actual game play mechanics.

I think "nu-DOOM" will barely be remembered in a few more years, considering the sequel pretty much improved upon everything lacking in the first installment, but its also harder to compare it to previous installments given that is essentially the epitome of modern shooters that don't have anything to do with the fictional wars between Russians or random middle-eastern terrorists like the "Call of Duty" franchise, but if that's the case than the only game it can be compared to is "Halo" and all of the modern tripe it injected into the landscape of first-person shooters for the rest of time immortal. In the end, it was fun, but not rewarding and many of the challenges turned out to be mostly a waste of time unless you're a completionist slug who cannot live without achieving something imaginary. Its also kind of not that hard unless you play on "instant game-over sent back to first level" difficulty, which honestly doesn't sound like much fun for anyone really. It borders on "back to formula," and "disarmingly goofy" which makes its accomplishments much harder to take seriously as time goes by.
