All the build up for release, planned, calculated. EPIC Fail on release with DRM Servers keeping everyone from logging in. There should be an offline mode, and furtharmore DRM needs to be throttled back a bit.

I have to agree with 98% of the reviews. Blizzard crashed and burned hard. I'd hate to see an expansion pack for this game. Waste another $60 bucks, still cant play online, still cant play single player. I'd assume go back to Runescape than give this game any credit for being even the slightest bit better.

So in Diablo 3 you will likely make 5 characters, which in extreme situations takes roughly 2 days per character to reach level 60. After two weeks of playing you could easily have a max leveled character of each class. Even the most casual gamer will be able to have a max leveled character of each class within a number of weeks. And as we previously discussed due to the "customization" allowed in Diablo 3 each of their characters will be relatively similar to yours in the since that they have all of the same skills readily available for selection. There is no need to recreate characters, no decisions you make in the game are committments, and I don't see where any level of replayability will come from.

I was a huge fan of Diablo 1 and 2, but this is just ridiculous. The game is a fine addition to the Diablo series, even though it is horribly dumbed down for the casual gamer masses. It's apparent that Blizzard doesn't care about their customers and are just another greedy corporation. The invasive DRM kills it for me. -No customization at all
    -None replayability
    -Ridiculously flat skill/attribute points
    -Extremely linear
    -Difficulty not challenging at all
    -No runewords
    -Pay to win RMAH
    -Battlenet 2.0
    -WoW-like skills and graphics
-+200str an armor? lol...(WoW-like items, never seen a +200str or +200 any other attribute in diablo games)
    -No PvP on release
-Checkpoints (awful implementation) -Joining game issues like: leveling up or getting waypoints you didn't have.
-Almost none ingame trade system (no global chat equals no trade between players equals all trades made with blizzard as intermediary equals high end items that worth RM get sold in RMAH equals blizzard getting part of)

    Pros:
-Due to the dificulty and the mobs AI you could still play Diablo III even with both arms broken.

And now, it seems that Diablo 3 is the game that broke the camels back. The respect I had for Blizzard being a revolutionary and innovative game publisher is all but lost. After paying the hefty $60 price, I am unable to play the game, not because of my computer specs, but the fact that the game has to be connected to the internet to play both multi and single player. I was aware of this fact when purchasing, however because Blizzard's server isn't even working properly, I might as well hang the diablo 3 DVD from my clothes line outside to keep the birds away; this way the DVD would actually be useful. In any other situation, if a company sells a product (or as Blizzard would like to call it, a service) in mass numbers that doesn't work, it would be refunded or recalled. This game is a perfect example of how corrupt the pc game industry has become, and how somehow it is the consumers who are out of line, because they are complaining about buying a $60 paperweight. Shame on Blizzard. By trying to discourage piracy with their always on single player connection, they only alienate the legitimate consumers who pay for their products. Moving past all of this, when actually able to play, the actual game itself is nothing new, rather an oversimplification of the former Diablo games. Attribute points are gone, character customization is limited to male or female, there is no options to choose skills (most of which are very unoriginal). In addition, the dark, moody graphics that helped define the Diablo series have been throw out for cartoony, WOW rip off graphics. To make things even worse, Diablo 3 has implemented real money, pay-to-win auction houses, allowing players to simply pay cash to create a strong player, rather than through their accomplishments in the game. To add insult to injury, players who use this feature will be helping to fatten Blizzard's wallet with every transaction, as Blizzard will be taking a 15% cut of all transactions, in additional to a $1 fee for every real money transaction. I am disgusted with Blizzard. 9 nine years in development and all we get is a money-making scheme disguised as the revolutionary Diablo 3 game that loyal fans to the series have eagerly been waiting for, taking advantage of their loyal consumer base. In closing, if there was one word to personify what I see Blizzard as after all this, it would have to be.. diablo. Expand

I fall into the first category. I was very interested in buying Diablo 3 having played both 1 and 2 numerous times over. However, as a single player type gamer, and a person that doesn't have the best internet connection or desire to socialize I find it disheartening that few companies allow me to play games on my terms. Diablo 3 is just the next installment of software hating customers like me.

Always online DRM is something I'm just not going to support. A grind game where users can pay to advance faster. Both things I just can't and won't support. I still haven't bought Diablo 3. And unfortunately I never will. Bye Blizzard. You now are a member of the ranks of EA, Activision (yes I already knew you were part of them) and Ubisoft. Take your games and go screw yourself with them.

I'm buying and playing Torchlight 2 and other games developed for me as a consumer.

If you're going to put such intrusive DRManti-piracyanti-cheat measures into a game in the future, try to make sure it doesn't screw over half your PAYING CUSTOMERS who have no intention of hackcheatetc!! And yes I absolutely will give the game a poor score due to this because it has thus far ruined the whole experience for me.... all I want to do is have an hour or 2 of single player goodness yet most MMO releases are better than this. And no I'm not going to start rebooting my modem and opening random ports to try and solve this because I have plenty of other multiplayer games and even MMOs that don't require such measures.

I'm sorry, this is completely ridiculous. Was 12 YEARS not long enough to develop a game that can even run at all on launch day? Maybe the problem is that Vivendi bought the rights to the Diablo name, but it lost all of the original Diablo and Diablo II developers who actually knew how to make such a game work.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Good:

Graphics are fair enough, nothing groundbreaking, but not what I would describe as bad.

New skill system is fairly innovative and interesting.

    The Bad:

Always-on DRM. Can't play this game without Blizz's servers up and a broadband internet connection.

The storyline is indescribably bad. Diablo walks into heaven and single handedly destroys it, and mounds and mounds of angels because evidently God doesn't care too terribly about his home being wrecked. And then Diablo then dies to a group of up to 4 nephelim (nephelim being somebody who has human and angelic parents), so: Angels > humans, Diablo > Angels, One Half Human-One Half Angel > Diablo. Makes perfect sense.

    The controls, while being very similar to Diablo 2 are not at all optimized for the new skill system and there are no options for click-for-everything. As a result, especially for ranged classes, controls can feel clunky, especially in combination with the horrendous lag. Which brings me to my next point;

The lag is terrible thanks to the fact that 90% of the game is done through server-side processing. The game client installed locally on the user's computer does little more than contain the graphical assets and display them for the user. Movements, abilities, monsters, and all other operations performed in the game are processed by the server and as a result, have never seen a ping below 250ms. According to Blizzard this is A-OK (the latency bar stays green until you hit 300ms, at which point it will turn yellow). So at minimum, anything you do takes 1 quarter second before it ever actually happens. This leads to dying many times to monsters you thought you had plenty of distance away from.

Sadly, the boss battles are all boring. The only one that was of any interest to me was Belial. Diablo was pathetically easy. Just left click on him and hold down. That's about all there is to it.

Sad thing was, that even with the new skill system that few of the skills are ever really required, most of the time you can just left click your way to victory which really made the game feel very bland.

All in all, I bought Diablo 3 with low expectations since Blizzard hasn't been known as of late to produce quality material, yet sadly even my low expectations were let down. Diablo 3 is not worth $60 in even the most remote respect.

    - The game is anything but balanced. All the classes are completely broken, especially the Barbarian which seems to get buffed every patch while every other class gets nerfed. With the new monster power system coming in, it makes absolutely no sense to play any other class other than a Barbarian. This should put up a red flag about the supposed balance. The story is lame at best; professional script writers have actually poked fun at D3's story as being one of the worst story line's they've ever seen.

Karma_Police - Everything that makes a good game is there / "when" they polish the game the game could be the best game in pc history / Blizzard fixing the issues.

    - Haha ok this is a real doozy here.. how much exactly have you had to drink when you wrote that? The only thing the game has that could even remotely considered to make it great is it's graphics. It lacks everything else, from the music, to the balance, down to the non-randomness of the maps. They aren't fixing anything, they take about 150 steps backwards with each patch, tipping the scales in favor of not only Barbarians but a small % of players who use the rmah. Things like this have been pointed out since it's release. The only thing Karma has right is the loot system is crap, as well as, the DRM.,

For those of you looking at this and wavering on whether or not to buy D3; you need to know the truth, and not be subjected to these lies these 2 have put forth.

The only way this game will work for you is if you don't plan on progressing past Normal mode (which should take you maybe 35hrs of playtime at most. If your happy with spending $60 on that, then this game is for you. Keep in mind.. the 35hrs play time will probably take you about 200hrs real time due to the constant errors.

Diablo 3 is on it's own merit, one of the most exceptionally bad let downs of all time. The graphics are so cheap and second rate, it looks like an indie studio of about 4 guys did the work on it. The characters are 2 dimensional and so hard to get behind it's laughable, so you almost wish it was a comedy. Oh and in terms of customization (the cornerstone of the RPG experience) forget about any deviation from what they decided your character will look like. And to top it all off, after paying $60 you can't even play it without getting kicked off every few minutes due to Blizzard mandating you stay online while you play. Why did they mandate this? So they could suck more money from you via the Auction house. Diablo 3 is gaming's Waterworld.

You can see Blizzard's merging of their IPs in this game. It takes graphical, interface, and gameplay elements from WoW and SCII. You can't distribute your skill points, yes it makes things more simple, but it points back to WoW and SC, the merging of these elements probably saves money (or at least allocates it for other things that may or not be improvements) but it takes away from the soul/character of the original. D3 was probably built on the SC 2 game engine..I don't want it to feel like SC! The story was a travesty, two major characters were killed off and in a cheesy cut scenes. The acts had similar environments as D2, (desert, jungle, forest, hell-ish) which was fine I suppose. No open world PvP? A WoW auction house? Sorry, I have such mixed emotions about it right now that I can't put it into words, I almost feel like I shouldn't have even played it because I can't erase the bad parts! could only wish for my memory to be erased and Blizzard to do proper justice to the game. I don't even want to play through again because it's so depressing. You go back 6 years and SC, WoW and D2 felt like DIFFERENT GAMES, now it's just a mix of all, over simplified and ...ugh so frustrating!

I did like the graphics and sound but I found that sometimes the journals, voices and character interaction sound levels varied a lot so I found myself adjusting the sound here and there.

This review starts off at 10/10, and I'll explain the deductions... (I tried my best to not have spoilers of any kind)

DRM: I personally wouldn't play offline, as I want my character to progress, and to play with my friends; BUT being required to only play online just pisses me off as a consumer. Make it so single player characters that are offline can NEVER go online. Problem solved! ( -3 )

Connectivity: Under normal games this is not an issue. Server crashes, you get a 10 second time-out. If you die, so what repair your stuff for a marginal amount of gold and continue. I however play Hard-core. If the server craps out on my character may be permanently deleted through no fault of my own. ( -1)

Auction House: I've seen stuff available for sale in Game-gold (which is fine) I would never pay any cash for anything. I won't knock the game for that. ( No Effect )

Game-play: It is somewhat fun, you have to play with other people or it will become boring as hell in no time. The inclusion of lore, and side stories helps to add emersion, but the story is predictable, and very linear. I was expecting a better story out of this game, as they had 12 years to make it and a litany of novels written about the world to draw off of. ( +1 ) I wish this was higher like a +4 :( but no way can I rate it anything other than ( +1 )

The fact I can only customize my hero through items is a bit disappointing, but it has it's upside as well. No worries about misplacing a skill point, or a Patch coming along ruining my build, but It's all cookie cutter. It's a + and a - in my books. ( No Effect ) Graphics: The cinematic are gorgeous, but there are soo few!!! The rest are drawn graphic-novel style with not much in the way of colour. They can argue they did this for effect, but I found it disappointing, and skip them the second time through. A waste I say... The world is nicely done to a degree, there is depth along the sides of the map so it feels bigger than Diablo 2, but the trees, rocks, chests, and all objects are poorly textured, and have rather piss poor Poll- counts. The characters look their best, and I use this word reluctantly, at the log-in screen. Even here the textures are very poor, and the overall models weak. This game looks like it was released in 2004-2005. ( -2 )

Sound: Awesome! Voice acting: Really good. ( +1 ) Environment: The game is too colourful and pleasant for the story line it purports. The game is about death, sacrifice, evil, horror, terror etc. Sure have the parts colourful when this emphasises the nature of the level, but when you are in the midst of a supposed living nightmare. It doesn't fly. ( - 1 )

Interface: easy to navigate, they think of all the little things that could make life annoying and didn't commit those sins, but these are little things and spit/polish, so can't earn a lot of points. ( +1 )

Skills: Some skills are simply useless compared to others, there is very little in the description to the exact numerical effect on damage, evasion, resistance, etc. So you have to activate a skill with your stat menu open to see exactly how good or pathetic a skill is. It should be as simple as putting your mouse cursor over a skill and see (grants a +7.87% evasion at your current level... for example). (-1 )

If my math serves me right this is an aggregate of -5 to the original starting score of 10. So I rank this game a 5/10.

Midnight Launch Eve - Got my copy and raced home to insert serial number

Everything Accomplished Go to Bed to wake up early and play.

Start my demon hunter around 930 am played for a couple hours servers are down.

Continue playing with several server down moments all the way through normal difficulty exploring everything and going through all of the semi-boring repetitive lore. Day 3 - Beat Diablo 3 on normal and begin to explore the problem plagued auction house and start to notice several other bugs in the game.

Day 4 - About halfway through nightmare, Game has lost its fun and feels like Im grinding for no reason what so ever anymore. No Real World PvP, WoW style auction house and lack of character customization.
Day 6 - After a break decide to go back and play some more with friends, beat nightmare and began hell...yet still terribly disappointed with the game, beat nightmare and move to hell difficulty. Game play begins to require more strategy with groups and FORCED switching of skills to beat certain mobs and bosses. Beginning to see no real reason for the black smith as its redundant when the auction house is faster and sometimes cheaper also noticed that the way MF works has changed since diablo 2 and some stats are broken / read incorrectly with certain items equipped. Game keeps dropping me when I minimize for several seconds, making adjustments to my TDP and UDP drop settings on the router seemed to have fixed this a bit.
Day 7- Playing with my buddy and a higher level friend both having decently high MF after a friend that was outside our level range joined our game we noticed a significant decrease in yellow drops for that difficulty especially when none of us have beaten said bosses or champion mobs before, asked him to leave the game to try and see if him being outside the level range of the mobs effected the drop rate (AKA like an MMO where mobs are non-colored or GREYED out due to level range and do not drop loot anymore) did not seem to fix the problem. Only after everyone quitting the game and creating a new party was the problem rectified. Also took note that during peak game play hours rare drops seemed to happen less (Probably so the auction house doesn't get flooded and a ratio is kept especially since only 10 items are allowed on the AH at a time.)

Day 9 - Jumped online at an off peak time to test theory of rare drop ratio. So far evidence would dictate that it is true rare drop rates are lower during peak game play hours. Going to continue testing this theory without changing any gear and repetitively doing the same general quest / area with the same person as before.

My experience of the game so far ...
1 Graphics : Really loved the first play through even though the graphics were stolen from WoW except I give mad props to the implemented physics engine. The graphics are definitely not as evil feeling and dark as the original games which saddens me alot. I feel as though its diablo painted over WoW...and (SPOILER) **Whats up with this **** **** Pony Level? I was hoping for a cow level not some colorful pony level that hurts my eyes.** Fail on the graphics blizzard. 2. Sound: No complainants here really. Voice actors were good, I do think that some of the voice overs we WAYY to stereo-typical. Could have done a better job on the sound of some of the attacks and creatures for sure. BOSSES ESPECIALLY.

    3. Single Player Experience: Non Existent ; I did try to play the game solo when friends were not online, its way to easy. If you started playing multi player with friends you will no doubtly be geared better than soloists and it makes game play cheesy and boring.

    4. Multi player Game play : LAG LAG LAG , Having said that I have a good rig and great connection. Blizzard still has alot of kinks to work out. With a lacking choice in character classes and the lacking of a customizable skill tree instead of this forced style only allowing you to switch skills to certain buttons or hot keys to make you use "Strategy" for killing certain mobs in hell or inferno difficulty. A promised feature of PvP that was never released sadly hopefully it will soon especially if it only takes an average player 2 weeks of solid play to easily "Twink" out a level 60 character, I am not looking forward to the real currency auction house and arena based combat, I believe this will kill the game except for the WoW fanatics that will still be playing.

    Overall : Score - 3.5ish

I give them points for trying but money was on they're mind when they made the game and it was obviously rushed into production. I would have never guessed that they spent 4 years making this game. A new player to the franchise would even recognize that this was a poorly made game.

Why did it take them so long to make this game? Diablo 3 is basically a rip-off of previous diablo games. All character models looks like taken from the previous blizzard games with 0 inovation, same about the enviroment and level design. The game is addictive because of the loot and auction house system but the game play is very repetitive right from the start.

The character levels on its own, and you are given six slots to choose which skills to use, and which runes to attach to the powers to alter the skill. Skills are doled out as you level in a pre-planned fashion. That's it for customization. It's a simple system, and if you like that sort of thing, you'll love this game. I know some people love the "streamlined" system and thinks it's an improvement, and I'm glad those people can enjoy this game. I didn't, however, and I couldn't feel connected to my character as a result of having no input on how it leveled. That issue, coupled with the internet DRM, is why I give the game a terrible score, and why I won't be purchasing it. The combat plays like Diablo, and the music is Diablo, but that's where the similarities end for me. Do yourself a favor and play the trial before buying this, to make sure its the kind of game you want. I was expecting something completely different. Otherwise, I suggest pre-ordering Torchlight 2, as you'll get Torchlight 1 for free to scratch your Diablo itch while you wait for T2 to come out this summer. Consequently, Torchlight 1, a game with a far lower budget released in 2009, has held my attention just as long as Diablo 3, and I'm still enjoying it. I think that says something about Diablo 3 and it's level of quality, at least as far as players who were expecting the ability to customize their character in a similar way to the previous two installments of Diablo. The UI is surprisingly mediocre, given that Blizzard are also the makers of WoW. The multiplayer is supposed to be a big selling point, but it is really lacking. All the things that are well done in WoW are bad in Diablo - there is no voice chat, the chat system is extremely limited, the AH interface is lacking. There is no PVP as of yet, they say it'll be added at a later date, but why the hell, they had plenty of time. There is no synergy between the hero classes, you all just dish out your damage and try to stay alive. Add to that the little content this game has I can't really see the replay value. Yes, on higher difficulties mobs will be a bit stronger and you will get a bit stronger items to be able to fight them, but where is the fun in that? It is still the same 10-hours-of-playtime content you already know.

    - Repetitive, neurotic and obsessive gameplay, driving you to do the same things over and over again.

I could keep going. The game is addictive for those with a lot of time in their hands, but its completely crap for casual players. Hell, even Bejeweled is better than this.

And to those claiming that all these bad reviews are all about "server issues" and not about the game I have this to say: since they made it compulsory to be "always online" to play this game, they made server issues an integral part of actually playing the game. It's not a separate experience. The issues with their servers are part of the game playing experience as a whole, and that aspect is so underwhelmingly disappointing. I had faith in Blizzard, I played WoW for years before I moved onto greener pastures. I loved all the Warcraft and Starcraft games. But I convinced myself that I wasn't going to buy D3 because of the "always online" garbage, and the RMAH. But I eventually came around to giving Blizzard the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they can pull it off. If the servers are always up, and my connection is stable, I could probably get over not being able to play away from home. Unfortunately this is completely not the case. It actually doesn't matter if the servers have 100% uptime from this moment onwards until the eventual heat death of the universe. My perception of this game, and this company are forever negatively coloured. Expand

This is one of the worst games in the last decade. To give you an idea how broken Metacritic review system is: Over 5 thousand people logged into this site to warn you how bad this game is and that doesn't effect the "Metascore" at all. Instead it is currently rated 88 with only 1 negative review, Metascore is a separate reality. I would suggest ignoring it and reading user reviews.`

Ugh! Total ripoff....gameplay is decent but completely irrelevant because you can't play offline. I am often in locations with my laptop WHERE I DON'T HAVE INTERNET!

Blizzard had 11-12 years to get this right, and they chose to screw it up with a DRM scheme that punishes the paying customers. FAIL!!!!

The dark atmosphere is almost entirely lost, there are plenty of monsters in the game but I get the feeling they don't really want to scare you or anything, they probably like ice cream too, but since you're there they gather their forces and theatrically attack you....
Conclusion: a dumbed down version of D2 in terms of feeling, atmosphere, characters, dialogues but with upgraded graphics ( by upgraded I do not necessarily mean "better", just technically superior). I suspect the game was meant to be played by Justin Bieber fans, and people who use words like "cute" and "sweet" and "fluffy" 50 times a day. 60 euros down the drain.

Yet I don't see who really will throw real money for singleplayer or just COOP.
Perhaps for PvP..oh snap..wait...there's not full PvP ingame yet because Blizzard broke their rule "It's done when its done".
Low-res textures, low-poly models, terrible voice-acting, terrible sound effect, lack of content. Yup, there are different modes but all they do is adding more and higher-HP foes. It makes the game last longer, not an actual real content. LAG LAG LAG while you play singleplayer.. WTF? You lose connection - your game fails. Simple.
The game even doesn't feel grim. Doesn't feel like Diablo game. Your 7yo can play it with no problems.

If you know what happens in Diablos lore - just read the new book or watch some Lets Play on Youtube.

I'm so angered by Blizzard at this disgrace of a game. They legalized gold selling,("its legal when we get the money",) Changed the art style completely (from a dark fantasy to wow), Completely casusalized everything (no stats, customisation, difficulty). It's just so bland. Also whats with the achievements? i spent about an hour playing (dont read as i played for 1 hour) and got 10 achievements, what on earth is that? thats not an achievement, an achievement implies that i actually did some work rather than killed 10 zombies. I also had the game spoiled by the achievements, it pops up on your screen in big when someone gets one and basically tells you who the bosses are gonna be later on, Real ID killed the immersion so bad.

It seems like the game was intended as a reboot to the franchise, but instead (because it was terrible) was turned into the third game in the series, to sell more copies. Why is the game so easy? i complained to one of my friends about how it was so easy and just a boring grind due to how easy it was, and he basically told me to complete it (6-10 hours of playtime) to get to a harder difficulty. Why cant i change the difficulty? i would've enjoyed the game a hell of a lot more if i was actually presented anything that could actually kill me for the first 5 hours of the game.

Isn't this supposed to be a AAA game? Then why are most of the monsters in the game copied straight from the previous 2 games and World of Warcraft? I wouldn't have minded a couple of copied monsters every now and then but goddamn they used so many.

Last thing, it seems like the complete first act and second were copied completely from diablo 2. And the entire first act is comprised of "oh hey its the characters from the previous games, look look they're talking to these people that are in the new one, holy **** they must be amazing if the old characters are talking to them. Oh Jesus! look its that boss from the first 2 games, oh god he's massive now JESUS CHRIST LOOKOUT!". But you can kill it with frogs.

This game was a waste of time, dont bother buying or even looking at it again, its a failure. Its AS BAD as Duke Nukem Forever. Stay away.

COMBAT: Little has changed since diablo 2, this game is still a clickfest with very little tactical thought required to be successful. A similar experience can be had playing flash arcade games online. Don't expect DragonAge here.

RPG: No user control over looks or ability (i.e. skill point distribution). Role-players will find it difficult to form a connection with their chosen hero.

STORY: Standard dark fantasy fare. Consider the lore of Milton's "Paradise Lost" mixed with the simplicity of David Eddings' "The Belgariad" though without the charm of the latter. The few 3D animated cutscenes, however, are truly outstanding, though at a few minutes apiece they are noticeably sparse and your character will feature in none of them.

LOOT: Loot has always been the driving force behind players grinding out so many hours in diablo 1 and 2. Inventory management still constitutes a large portion of the gameplay as it did in its predecessors. The uniqueness of your character will be defined by their equipment.

GAME MECHANICS: Basically every class should use a weapon with fast attack speed and a shield with heavy armor. The item and damage mechanic makes any other combination or selection of weapon subpar. Fans of D&D-style systems will be horrified.

CHALLENGE: This is an easy game. The fact that one must play through the entire game repeatedly in order to reach more challenging difficulty levels was acceptable in 1998; in 2012 it is frustrating. If you're a seasoned gamer who starts every new game on high tier difficulty settings then it will be many hours before this game becomes challenging (even if you insist on soloing). The simple gameplay, however, does mean you can grind your way into hell or inferno modes with one hand and only partial attention if you are willing to put in the hours. COMMUNITY: Its early days yet and the US server community is still largely friendly and excitable. Ages vary considerably. Chat channels and party management systems are very dated. Spamming from gold services is already significant in chat (blocking communication or reporting is, to date, ineffective)

SUPPORT: Random "scheduled" server maintenance, almost daily (for up to 8hrs), has marred the early experience of many gamers. Adding to their ire is the requirement to connect to server in order to play singleplayer. For Oceania gamers server downtime will happen in your peak playtimes if on the US server.

PLAY IF YOU LIKED: Torchlight, Bastion, Titan Quest, Drakensang Online, online Zombie flash arcade games
AVOID IF YOU EXPECT: Neverwinter Nights, DragonAge, Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Guild Wars

I like the concept of the game. Most parts feel much like the original game. There is still a significant amount of tweaking that needs to be done for balance and customizing your char. The connection issues make it unplayable. In 2012 this just shouldnt be an issue and is a direct reflection of the poor planning and lack of respect for the gaming community by Blizzard.

Anything is related to Items, not customization at all. Diablo like bitter dark ahmosphere gone. Comic cartoon WoW like'ish gfx and character behavior. Story, a joke. Long time playing factor, minimal. You're cutoff from the rest of players pretty much, no feeling for the "rest" of the Diablo world anymore.

Only 4 players ingame (I guess for later console versions), no hostile, pvp. But those are minor issues. The real deal is again, anything leads to the fricking auction house because you need items. To "deny" the usage is of course possible, but seriously, if you want to have any chance to keep pace you have no choice. There is no single-player modus anyway.

The initial server stability problems were terrible but forgivable. Unfortunately, this game just isn't very good.

To begin, the actual campaign is very short. Acts 1 & 2 come in at a reasonable size, but Acts 3 & 4 just feel terribly rushed. This should be offset by the replayability of facing multiple difficulty levels in new procedurally generated zones. The generated levels just don't work; they compare poorly even to the decade-old Diablo 2. Typically there are few if any variations to the level structure, and randomization is achieved by dropping objectives and monsters haphazardly over this template. It feels completely entirely the same as when you cleared it the last time.

The game's story is weak. Admittedly, no one really plays an ARPG for the story, but this one just feels very lazy. In Diablo 2 events happened because you were chasing Diablo. It drove the story and events happened within that framework. In Diablo 3 it's not really clear what you're doing; you simply react to a series of events. One thing happens and you investigate, and once you finish off one antagonist a brand new one pops up to advance the game. There's little sense of continuity from one mission to the next. The one surprise built into the story is utterly predictable.

Of course, the important part of an ARPG is going to be in the characters, combat and actual gameplay.

Combat is a mixed bag. The developers have really tried to make fight more tactical at all levels of the game. When it works it really *works* and produces a fun and exciting experience. This really isn't made to scale properly with level difficulty. Rather than monsters acting more intelligently or providing more varied encounters, higher difficulties just tack on more hitpoints and damage to everything. There is a sweet spot where technique and character build really matter, but for most of the game you either crush everything without a thought or just die to your foe without even the chance to react. Champion mobs get special modifiers which can produce unique fights, but once again turn into a situation whereby they are completely easy, or impossibly difficult. There is definitely a spot where characters and difficulty match up perfectly. If Blizzard could manage to match these up more consistently then this could be a great game. For most of the game, they just miss. The place where this is most apparent is in the end game. It is apparent that Inferno mode was never properly playtested. Because the AI doesn't become any smarter as you advance, Inferno mode was made difficult by simply piling damage onto monster. The practical result is that classes that can avoid damage and attack from range can move straight to the end, whereas classes that were meant to mitigate damage and get close to the enemies cannot participate at all. In summation: poorly tuned, lousy story, and repetitive.

I have now played Diablo for 7 days and already there is zero point to continue I have beaten inferno on my wizard with a build that i made in 5 minutes that made me more or less invinsible trading items is pointless as ah has top dps weapons for gold and when every skill is based on weapon dmg what else matters , im not even fully geared and i have beaten inferno so now there is no further point to trade items. The level cap is also flawed in wow you hit 60 for a reason so you can do the best instances what is the point in diablo ? to farm the best gear that i can buy on auction house any way i could run hell in full mf and golfind sell everything and gear my hole char through ah i heard in d2 it was 99 and hard to hit so you always looked forward to something .

Ans last but not least the funniest thing is that the rarest items are not the best they have nil importance it could take me forever to find a legendary i find one and i have a magic/rare which is better so again i go back to ah to sell what should be the best item in the game for a blue.

This is a complete let down

UK - Having not played Diablo or Diablo 2 I can't comment on how the game compares, all i can say is that no matter how much you want this game do not buy it right now until blizzard fix it. There has not been a single day since launch where I have been able to log in and play at the times I would like without outright server closure or random disconnections.

I Feel it is fair to compare

I Feel it is fair to compare this to a Subscription MMO, since it requires online servers to be played, The problem is this is where the similarity ends and also Blizzards incentive to please their customers or fix it quickly. They have already collected plenty of revenue, and without subscriptions are most unlikely to compensate players in the way that MMOs do during times of such incompetence.

If any owners of the game are reading this please take the time to post your views, positive or negative so that all future buyers get a fair representation of what service they are buying.

This is the issue with critic reviews, they buy a product to use once and discard after a few hours, true customers buy a prolonged service, and this is what blizzard are failing to deliver

    Rant over

Blizzard treats you, the paying customer, as guilty until proven innocent and disguises it with a weak excuse involving the inventory system. Enough said.

I played this for like 60 hours , and it's so annoying and boring, i don't even know where to start from... Lack of end-game, connectivity issues, just plain boring..

Played for 30 minutes, got bored, never went back. Don't waste money on this. The days of good Blizzard carring for the quality of their games are gone.

From old Blizzard and for 60euros i expected to have many random events (come on, its not hard to script such events - players do it all the time in map editor of warcraft and starcraft games for free) in the pool and really randomly generated maps instead of what Actiblizzard gave us. Replayability is so utterly boring and repetetive that is a "no go".

Now the core: Actiblizzard made it the elite packs hunting. But what they gave us is hunting 4 irrelevant model of monsters with what really matters: totally random and not well thought-trough combinations of traits which are the thing you fight with... for melee characters you always see elite pack as a spinning lazers and for ranged you see them as mortar fireballs flying towards you - all the rest is irrelevant and that makes elite fights utterly boring retro arcade game.

On top of that you are bound to 2 very similiar combinations of one build that is the only way to challenge anything higher in difficulty than an actuall faceroll difficulty level for you AND build gets very boring. When you switch to anything else you wont be able to kill elite packs due to radiculous traits combinations.

Of course there is other way.... bring your credit card numbers (even tho you already paid 60euros).

    In short:
RMAH (real money acution house) is a fantastic feature, a great addition to any game, but sadly D3 was a low budget addon to the RMAH.

Always online DRM. Not that it affects them at all, but they lost at least one pre-order sale, but of course, everyone in the world has first world internet connections, so it will be fiiine.

I wouldn't call this anything more than an average game. Story is silly and almost non-existant, graphics are actually terrible for a game released in 2012 (Not much better than WoW's graphics) and the gameplay hasn't changed the slightest since Diablo 2 (Which could be a good thing, depending on who you ask). Very poor. Cannot log into the game after having for about 24 hours, far too simplified combat, not nearly as memorable for monsters or characters as Diablo 2, and nearly no customization.

I had mixed experience during and after playing. It's not as perfect as previous Blizz games. Too expensive for 15 hours of play for finishing main plot on normal. It's rather for no lives game without any sense for me (maybe for PvP in future). Game play is addicted for sure especially with friends but I'm not sure if it is enough for keeping players base for long. Graphics and music are quite good, wow - like style - if one likes WoW and other Blizz games this style is for him. For games being under development for so long time it is first Blizz fall down. This is Diablo mod for Warcraft. It looks like Warcraft (W3 or WoW), characters are like from Warcraft (demon hunter, witch doctor), most of the skills you can trace to Warcraft universe. Skills themselves look ridiculous, and too flashy.
You can't influence character development, you can only chose combination of skills. Was this game made by marketing department of Vivendi/Activision

Worst Part of the series. Will not work offline, a huge flaw. No innovation, too easy and horrible skill system. Graphics is not state of the art, low textures low animation. There is no innovation in the combatsystem.

Much like everyone else, the game fails to connect and when I finally did get in, the game was nothing like Diablo 2, much less a sequel, at all. This game is not a true successor to the game we all know and love.

This is what happens when you add unnecessary, ludicrous DRM to any game. You've had years of beta, you had open beta, you've had experience with large game launches, and you knew the pre-order numbers; and yet you ignored all this data.

No offline mode, no LAN, and almost no way to play because of constant connectivity issues. Assuming you can manage to even play you'll be faced with a completely mediocre game with none of the tone or depth of the originals. Enjoy.

I bought this game for the single player and have only been able to play for an hour this morning before the servers (for my single-player game) got overwhelmed. Thanks Blizzard, I will have to get the illegal copy to play the game I already bought.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
