Probably the worst gaming experience I've had, or should I say let down, in years. Forced online game play. Repetitive unoriginal gameplay. Uninspired graphics. And let's not forget the auction house blizzard money grab. Blizzard is on a downhill slope.

I am disappointed, nay, extremely disappointed. This is marketed and priced as a AAA game and it is anything but. If you are lucky enough to get past the the log-in screen, a somewhat amusing game awaits you. Highly linear and taking zero risks, Diablo III has the distinct feeling of being utterly uninspired and serves more as a money making machine rather than a labor of love. Adding a black eye to the whole affair, the always-online DRM increasingly adds to the frustration of the Diablo III experience. Had I known nothing about the developers of this title, I would have assumed that it was a browser game as that is it's true competitor. This is certainly no AAA title. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Since icannot actually play the game i paid 59 euros for, this gets zero points right off the bat. Its a shocking and appaling how blizzard, a company that has already launched a major mmo title and another multiplayer title is unable to launch a game that was anticipated for over a decade, they KNEW this was a massive storm of players rushing to the servers.
And they completely ignored it. Hey, industry: you sell us games in this fashion, you made that decision. Its not us asking you to do this kind of crap, especially the online only part. You KNOW when there is launch day and you know people will actually go and play the game they bought. SO **** PREPARE YOU ****

This game gets zero points on the basis that blizzard is a shed full of retard monkeys.

The story was uninteresting and the characters never developed any depth through the progression of the game. The skills are poorly thought out and oddly constricting. Using only a handful of skills for the majority of the game. By far the worst mistake made was the idea that the solution to "Boss runs" was to force people to minion farm. Again the game isn't terrible, it just falls so far from the expectations for the sequel and was a terrible misstep away from the components that we loved. Expand

I honestly consider this game a waste of 60 dollars. The ten hours I did play weren't fun so much as a way to waste time. There is no PvP of any kind, There are no RPG aspects to make leveling an event worth succeeding in. Every single character has access to every single spell and no one plays anything different then you, even if they do, it will never matter to you as PvP is non-existent. The servers are riddled with issues and you can't play in a single player mode offline, so when the server goes down the game is over for you. There is no story and what some people do call story is a joke. The graphics are out dated by computer game standards and the gameplay hasn't been changed in any way from the previous games created by blizzard. The scenery is boring and makes for a bland experience no matter what area of the game you are in.

The final straw of this game comes in the form of the real money auction house. As it was released the desired goal of Blizzard was made clear. This game is literally a means for them to make money off of people buying items to win the game. Everyone purchases the best available items at extremely high costs (it was attack speed based weapons, costing 250+ per weapon) after millions of dollars had been transferred in this way they nerfed attack speed (silently) then started the selling over.

If you want a game that costs you hundreds and hundreds to win, then Diablo 3 is the game for you. If you want a game that is fun, has a good story, Interactive and interesting gameplay, Multiplayer with PVP. Then look to any other game, none of those will be found here.

I never thought I'd see the day that I'd right a Blizzard game a low review. Yet here we stand at that day. To understand what it is about this game that is such a letdown and overall makes the game so poor, you need to know what Diablo 3 was meant to be. It's name implies it is supposed to be a sequel to Diablo 2, and therefore it should be Diablo 2, but better, right? Well it isn't. Diablo 3 is the bastard offspring of Diablo 2 and Call of Duty. The bones of Diablo 2 are there, but they have been covered by the awful casualization and monetization of the CoD franchise. So what do we have? Always-online-DRM, causing single player lag and forcing you to have an internet connection to play. Massively inconvenient. The RMAH. Blizzard takes a 15% cut. Do you know why? Because this game is built around you using the RMAH. They want your money, pure and simple. The RMAH isn't for your convenience, just so Blizzard can "sneakily" take your money. The Story is atrocious. I came in expecting Blizzard level story-telling and got a terrible, poorly thought out plot with forgettable characters, bad voice acting, and embarrassing dialogue. Never has a fantasy game made me wish I wasn't playing a fantasy game before. Gameplay is solid, but the game itself is boring, lacking any of the customization of D2, or the charm, or the fun of playing with friends (yay, I can play with four people, because this game is made for consoles). This is really something I never thought would happen. But the immaculate Blizzard has done us wrong. I'd have happily pre-ordered every game from them till the end of time, but after this fiasco? Blizzard has lost a customer, and a fan. Rating: 4.9/10 Expand

Given the fact that items have many random power-ups and bonuses, a Windforce say might sell for about $20 but then another one with just +1% extra damage would sell for probably 5x that amount. Who is benefiting from this? Blizzard is benefiting by taking significant percentages of each real money transaction. However, a company with Blizzard's experience (5+ major online service launches) has no excuse for the amount of issues this game has/is currently having on launch day. I have been able to play for a grand total of 15 minutes today, as the servers have been consistently down since noon, with the ETAs given by the customer reps being off by 2+ hours and constantly slipping. This kind of thing was understandable back during vanilla WoW's launch, as that was new territory for a company with little experience with large-scale server infrastructure, but with the amount of experience they have now, there is no excuse.

I know people are saying "oh well, things will be sorted out tomorrow", but they won't. As with the rest of Blizzard's major launches (although SC2 was pretty smooth, to be fair), expect 2-3 weeks of this BS with no attempt on Blizzard's part to set things right.

No character customization, attributes are assigned automatically on level up, skills can be swamped and are very limited (so no more experimental char builds), no visual customization. Overall too gear dependent (again RMAH...) and too dumbed down. Graphics look too much like warcraft and overall 2006-ish, they don't have that dark feel of previous installments. Story is sketchy at times, gameplay forces you to linearity, you can't skip quests and rush to the next act like in diablo 2, no you have to do everything 4 times over. It barely released and we seeing a fanon discontinue (rejection of the story as canon by fanbase), no wonder however seeing how most of crew who made diablo 1 and 2 left blizzard years ago. Expand

Diablo gameplay is characterized by fast paced clicking and split second decision making. When you are trying to thread the needle through a pack of monsters and you are lagging or even start rubber-banding because of the forced online connection at all times, even for the single player game... it leads to a poor experience.

While the previous Diablo games had online multiplayer, these were optional experiences that were available in addition to the core single player offline experience. Performance degradation because of the nature of online play is acceptable in exchange for enhanced functionality that is actually being used. Especially when the degradation is only experienced after completing the full offline experience. It is similar to how your friend talking during a movie that you are watching on your TV doesn't really ruin the experience if you've already seen the movie in a quiet movie theater.

What Blizzard has done is to have filmed a movie and then REQUIRED you to watch it with your loud obnoxious friend talking and throwing popcorn during the entire thing. It doesn't matter what is on the screen, because it is ruined by the environment in which you are forced to experience it in.

I have had none of the massive connection problems that the majority of people are experiencing... unfortunately. This has to be the worst game I have played this year, over priced, over simplified and over hyped. A must avoid. Now onto diablo 3, i'm an avid player of the first mentioned game but i bought diablo 3 anyway knowing i didnt have to expect alot because i was in the beta. Finished normal difficulty so far and i find the game quite enjoyable and fun, good for casual games and good for waiting for the open beta of the first mentioned game.
This shouldnt be called diablo 3, more like WORLD OF DIABLOCRAFT, if it had a different name people would not be raging atm, but calling it the successor of the great games that were diablo and diablo 2 is really arrogant towards real fans of the complex aspects of the former 2 games that made them great.
Diablo for kids and casual gamers, good for wasting time, probably still worth an 8 because it's quite a decent game on its own, but boy if you insist in calling it diablo 3 it deserves a 4/10 score max.

p.s. i'm not affiliated in any way to the company of the first game mentioned, i'm jst an enthusiastic fan of it which, like many and many others, donated real money willingly and without acquiring any advantage in game to such company just because it is worth that much

And as one of the people with unstable internet connections I honestly cannot understand, why I should be having lags and disconnects while playing a 80-Euro single-player game?

Unjustifiable quality presented for a game in development since 2001. 11 years. I repeat, 11 years. The graphic quality doesn't impressed anyone, not music, average story, overly high latency and the first weekend they lost control of the servers. They deserve the users score who obtained making things so bad as possible.

Skill and rune system works for the most part. Good for RPG newcomers who want to jump in and kill things quickly. CONS = Repetitive gameplay. It becomes a grind for better gear after the first playthrough. If you find this fun, then knock yourself out. Always on-line requirement. There is no justification for this in a largely single player game. Even with a kickass machine and good internet connection, you are at the complete mercy of Blizzard's servers. Lag spikes. Get used to the sight of your character running around with everything else on the screen frozen, then suddenly dying. The story is abyssmal. Characters are two dimensional, no sense of pacing, predictable plot twists, and lack of any emotional undercurrent. In-game cutscenes are cartoonish and fail to convey any gravitas. Forgettable music and sound. Your character screaming "I require aid", "not enough discipline" and other such nonsense becomes aggravating, especially at higher levels. Lack of character customization. Skills/rune system is extremely limited and funnel you into a few builds per class. Many of the skills are useless. VERDICT = I was on stage 3 of the Diablo boss fight on Hell, doing very well after 12 attempts, and got a server disconnect. I uninstalled the game 15 minutes ago and am officially done. The always-online requirement destroys the core functionality of the game. Losing all your map progress due to server connection problems is UNACCEPTABLE. Again, there is NO REASON for a single player game to have an always-online requirement. If you wanted to hop into a co-op game or do online trading, fine, connect to the servers at that time. But if you're soloing by yourself, there is absolutely no reason. This, and the realization that the game is nothing more than a grind for more powerful (and ultimately meaningless) gear, has led me to quit. There are better and more meaningful games to waste your time on. Expand

The DRM, oh god the damn DRM! it has to be the worst DRM I have ever experienced, getting lag in a single player game is completely unacceptable and getting thrown out of a game because Blizzard needs to fix something reall quick is downright disgraceful, I feel like I am being punished for no reason other than for Blizzard to secure their potential profits. I feel an offline mode in which offline characters are forbidden to buy/sell in the auction house would have solved this problem. The story is boring and predictable and all the characters (except for good ol' Dekard Cain) are unlikable.
The gameplay is painfully average there is little to no customization when it comes to characters my barbarian looks like every other barbarian out there. But the thing worst of all, the very worst thing! - I'm not involved with the distribution of skill points and attributes , I feel completely disconnected from my characters progression and although I like the rune system I would have liked more control over how my character grows.
All that aside I actually had fun, at least in my first playthrough the graphics are great and the cinematics are outstanding. The combat feels meaty and the boss battles are very fun if you like WOW style bosses. The first 2 modes (normal and nightmare) are way too easy but the difficulty ramps up in hell mode and I hear inferno is just crazy dying-every-5-seconds-time which is something I would enjoy but I just can't bring myself to grind more gear in order to survive.
So overall a nice looking click-fest of fun at least for a few hours, but is horribly let down by it's outrageous DRM practices, dumbed down character progression and predictable story.

They nerfed what little joys are to be found in this game. I mean its a looting game that gives terrible loot... Seriously good loot is scarce to come by because... 1 its only found in inferno difficulty which is terribly unbalanced. 2 drops do not have a high chance of rolling up to anything good because the auction house is factored into how the game drops items so you bound to pretty much always get terrible loot. Don't say i didn't play either, 70 hours and i did get 3 legendary items but too bad they are weaker than most blues -.-. This "we'll patch later" mentality has ruined gaming. They left the endgame inferno untested, and impossibly difficult. The story was fine, but after playing through it over... and over... and over its a terribly boring ( and i mean in terms of a hack slash, sure you could play an elemental and kill things off screen for a few hours but is it really fun at that point?) but lets not forget there is... the lack of a good user to user interface, servers are constantly laggy, you can never truly play the game by yourself, and the list goes on... Did not like this game much at all, especially compared to D1 and D2. Really nothing new here, and lots of grinding and grinding. Pay-To-Win player store use is pretty much required for higher levels of play as the needed gear is simply not ALL going to drop in your lifetime. Repeated content is the name of the game. Basically Diablo 3 looks like a game, but it is not. Diablo 3 is a product for merchants, and gold farmers. It is a auction house simulator. The whole purpose is to buy and sell items, while Blizzard takes 15% cut of all the auction house earnings.

Disappointed to say the truth. To have lag and login issues ina single player game it's just terrible. DRM for this game is insane. very boring gameplay . Especially when it's not that great a game. It almost looks browser based. I tried to like it, but since I can't even play it when I want to, it lowers the score even more for me. the story is short and not engaging at all.

The connection to battle.net drops constantly, forcing unwanted replay. I can't imagine how people feel who have potentially lost hundreds of USD in real money in lost rare loot because of this. This is absolutely unacceptable for an online-only game. By way of comparison, I have lost connection with Battlefield Bad Company 2 servers maybe half a dozen times over the last two YEARS. I've been dropped from battle.net at least 20 times so far, and I've been playing Diablo 3 less than a week. Note that EA and Dice haven't been profiting from BFBC2 for about a year and a half, but their servers still function.

Even at the highest settings, the graphics look like they are from circa 2004. The visual art direction does a decent job of painting over this most of the time. This is not really a point of contention for me, because the dated visuals are presumably a tradeoff for rendering 100 baddies on the screen at once. So I can accept the low res.

The voice acting is passable, but the plot and dialogue are retarded. Cretinish. How humiliating must it have been for the voice actors to even pronounce the words in the script? Did the developers write this garbage in their (nonexistent) spare time? Maybe they should have focused on the netcode. And if professionals did write this... just stop. It's 2012. The majority of gamers are grown-ups. We were children when Diablo 1 came out. Now we have discretion and taste, so make art. Let Michael Bay make explosions. I am no Diablo fanboy - Diablo 3 is my first encounter with an action RPG ("RP" used loosely here - more like "limited character progression"). I wanted this to be awesome. Instead it was $60 of lost connections and interrupted games.

Not very good. I found diablo 2 rather boring but I thought diablo 3 would be different. It's not though. usually in most games you follow a story until you reach max level and then have some endgame content. The visuals are very good and the overall look is very inspiring, but that's all. The gameplay is quite the same as the other Diablos and other hack and slash games. There are not too many classes and few customization options.
The major downside is the constant connection required to play the game. It's bad, very very bad. I understand that you cannot play when there is no network

The major downside is the constant connection required to play the game. It's bad, very very bad. I understand that you cannot play when there is no network available, but the worst is that you need a very fast and stable broadband connection to play smoothly. And that's for the solo part as well as the multiplayer part of the game. So, I can't play solo at home because of the 2000ms lag, which cause my character to attack many seconds after I clicked or be teleported several meters before. A nightmare to play.

No pleasure at all. Avoid at all costs.

Always Online, dumbed-down classes and gear system, lackluster story, gameplay and art design that hits a brick wall after Act 1, ridiculous gear gap between Hell and Inferno that will force you into the AH, Always Online also basically denying you your game if you have internet problems or LOL BLIZZARD SERVERS on your damn SINGLE PLAYER GAME. The fact that Hardcore mode can be influenced by the state of your internet/Blizzard's servers is almost downright sickening. The couple good things I will mention at least are the graphics, art design in Act 1, enemies that do feel like relentless hordes on occasion, animations, and the gear design is alright but definitely borrowed from WoW.

I can't argue though if you enjoy the MMO style grindfest that Diablo has now become. Overall, this was simply an Acti-Blizz cash cow that they had to milk, at the expense of all the hype and fans.

Real Money Action House ruined Diablo 3. That simple! Blizzard's greed for money transformed a supposed to be fun, challenging grind game, to a mega nerd / rich kid pay2win game. Not to mention the absence of the promised PVP ...

With the announcement that the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 version of Diablo III will offer offline and LAN play, PC users are left with out the features they have asked for since launch. It's disrespectful to the customer.

Extremely repetitive and more importantly BORING! Good graphics but that is it. They designed the game around an auction house instead of designing it around the player. Check out their website they have finally admitted how bad the auction house has been for the game. If you want to use the auction house all the time might as well get into stocks.

Don't waste 60 bucks on this game, it is not worth it. Aside from DRM, the auction house and all that jazz the game just sucks. A lot of the story feels disjointed and out of place, as if they had all kinds of content and needed a way to mush it all together.

This game is a completely failure from the whole base. It was created for being an Auction House with graphics, nothing else. Farming isn't fun, people just used this game for selling items and earn some $$$.

The graphics aren't at all close to what Diablo should be, they are way too light and colorful, and the music is a complete fail. How many tracks this game has, 2 in total?

The cutscenes are really good, tho...

I can't believe how some of the official reviewers can be so blind. Especially Polygon for giving a score of 100.

After 45hrs of gameplay you think you can give a grinding game a score? Since this game is made to grind, you need at least 300 hours of gameplay before you can judge. When I say 300hrs, I mean on one character alone.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]
