I have limited windows of time to play, and more-than-rarely am I unable to play my f*cking game because the servers are down. This is structured as a single-player game with an option to co-op, so this really pisses me off. Really.
    2. The game itself is merely ok. First of all the story is weak and seems to become seriously rushed in the second act. Worse than the story is the dialogue which is terrible. I also don't care for the fact that your heroes have all sorts of irritating remarks and one-liners. I preferred the stoic types from the first two games. The gameplay is fun, but not the least bit revolutionary. Thematically the game is vastly inferior to its predecessors. Using the D3dark mod helps the atmosphere, but nothing about the game installs that sense of dread and creepiness that the first two games had.
All that said, there's no reason to give it a 1. I don't know why it took this long to make a game that begins rushing through the plot less than halfway through and contains a very limited number of Blizzard's signature cut scenes. Meh. Swing and a foul ball, Blizz. Not nearly as good at Starcraft 2.

I wouldn't call this anything more than an average game. Horrible. Graphics are ok, but very blurry. Why am I playing a blurry game at 1920x1080? No idea... Sound is awesome. Character and build customization are simplified, but that doesn't bother me too much, even in D2 the viable builds were only a handful and the rest were just ways to screw up your character, and I don't think anyone enjoyed grinding for another 2 months to make a new sorceress, only she spams lightning instead of frost. **** I don't mind the simplification. The atmosphere is fine, on par with D2 (of course not as dark and oppressive as D1). Can't comment on story, since I haven't finished it yet, can't comment on loot and AH either cause it will take months for a big portion of the loot to be discovered and for the AH to reach a "standard state" which could be a good or bad state, we just dont know yet. Overall, there are no moments where you are absolutely amazed, but the core of the game is solid. Expand

I'm sorry, but this has nothing to do with Diablo 1 and 2. The franchise has never tried to be clever, intelligent or exceptionally different, but this is just too bland. The skills system is too simple, the attributes aren't there at all and everything just depends on your equip, not your actual playing. And the auction house just ruins the whole experience. I my opinion it does not live up to the hype, It is an above average can which you can have fun with for a fair amount of time. A severe lack of customization and a buggy launch with no option to play offline contributes to my score. But even without the launch contributing I would still give it no more than a 7.

The game isn't the Diablo we loved: it is far less complex and takes less character planning. I find this detracts from my overall experience as I can't customise a character like I used to. I used to be able to level up my attributes and skills to tweak a character the way I wanted. That's all gone now. You won't be short of customisation options however with the 'rune' system, I was a fan of the DII style heavy character planning and investment type of customisation however.

Furthermore, if you create a hardcore character you are STILL at risk of losing your character if you disconnect because of a choppy network on your part or if the servers over at Blizzard go down/lag. This is even while playing in singleplayer (yes, you have latency while in singleplaer mode).

The auction house is a great addition and there's a good economy going atm, it's much easier to get the gear you want if you farm and sell your gear through this feature.

I don't like the over-emphasis on replaying the game to get bad ass looking loot. Basically, you get worthless and crap looking gear in Normal mode and it gets progressively better through each playthrough. This isn't because I can't get through Normal or anything, no no, normal is piss easy in fact. It's just that it feels like I'm treadmill gaming right from the very beginning of the game, where-as in DII I felt like I was treadmilling when I had to farm my Stones of Jordan.

Now we come to the story.... The story in Diablo 3 is presented terribly. Remember how the story of DII was told through both Marius' recounts and our own character trailing behind? Remember how we'd have to consult the wikis to learn subtle little lore tid-bits? Well that's gone. Now you have Blizzard trying to actively and without any subtlety whatsoever, force you to emotionally attach to 'Leah'. You will be killing monsters and suddenly she'll interject with how she wants to make an inn so she can help weary travellers. While I'm in the middle of killing and looting. Oh yeah that's another thing - You are forced to escort Leah and a few other annoying characters A LOT. In DII you were the lone saviour who occasionally received help but not nearly as much as this. The story is presented as if it were written for 5 year olds.... Seriously, remember Izuall from DII? Well he's back, and BOY does he want to remind you who he is after we just got told who he was. The 'Lord of Deceit' (Belial) is perhaps the worst deceiver I've ever seen: there's absolutely no subtlety to his 'master deception'. The twist in the plot can be seen from about 100 miles away it's that obvious. I think Chris Metzen needs to take a break from writing stories: it's the same old recycled **** over and over again, and every iteration of story he writes becomes more and more obvious. The Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft stories USED to have subtlety and were told and presented in an interesting way. Now it's just "HEY I'M A MAIN CHARACTER, I AM LIKE A PERSON BECAUSE I HAVE FEELINGS, CONNECT WITH ME, PLEASE CONNECT WITH ME, OMG PLOT TWIST I SOOOO DID NOT SEE THAT COMING DID YOU?!". Just awful writing.

Sometimes when you come home after a long day at work or uni and you just want to relax and play some Diablo with friends you won't be allowed to, because the servers will be down for maintenance or patching, or some useless reason like that... Even if you want to play singleplayer you won't be allowed to - it's quite a disturbing trend for singleplayer games actually. There's really not much else to say: the game isn't at all like the Diablo of old and that may be good or bad depending on what your preferences are. It's a lot simpler and there's no real character pre-planning required, but it still has quite a bit of variety to it. It's very fun to play with friends but gets quite stale in singleplayer. It is online only and thus latency is a big problem if you live in a country like Australia with terrible net speeds and you won't be able to log in during 'maintenance'. The story is terribly written AND terribly presented. The plot twists are obvious and terrible. The game is decent.. It is neither a perfect score (it HAS objective problems: like server maintenance and ping/latency in singleplayer hardcore), nor is it a 0 (it's impossible, it's decent, but that's all - nothing special). If you're a fan of Diablo II you may be disappointed; if you're quite young and have never played a point and click RPG this will probably be for you. It does feel like they're pandering a lot to a younger audience than ever before... And I think its success stems from the WoW market share. Ah well, it seems the old Diablo is gone.

The Game's largest fault is the Alwas Online (as many have said) that leands itself more to a MMRPG than a good old fasion dungeon crawler. I cant save before a particularly big bos (or at all) and deaths are respawned back at you last checkpoint. It's exactly how an MMO works, and I dont like it. It frustrates me that I can play the game how I like, (or even when I like, because of server issues).

Next I finally wait to get online, and cannot... for 2 hours... this even I expected, it was the giant DDOS attack from users spamming the "login" button.
Sign on this morning, its what I hoped it would be, it has everything Diablo had, and is fun overall, the crafting system, loot, and everything has been improved.
Next the servers go down after 2 hours of play.... okay fine they are fixing things... so for the next 5-6 hours I wait, and finally get back online, things are great again....
Then again, server is offline after 2 hours of play.... Seriously? It is only the American server being affected by what they do.
This is just beyond words. they need to enable us to play offline if we want for SINGLE PLAYER only if this is the way it will be. If we want to play online, then fine, let us have access to the online auction house only with those characters....

Warcraft 3 and Starcraft 2 had fantastic dialogue and Starcraft 2 had surprisingly AMAZING character development in my honest opinion, and i say surprisingly because I never expect that in RTS or Turn based strategy games but that doesn't seem to be a strength in D3, I mean it's not that bad (keep in mind I have only beaten the first act so my review will change this is just temporary) so far, its just,,,, average,,, the gameplay itself is good, it hasn't gotten tedious for me, but for a price tag of 60 bucks,, this game really isn't worth it.

Finally, DRM, what a load of @$$, i would have given this game an 8 or an 8.5 (considering price, lowered would be a 9 maybe) i'm sick of this, it seems that companies want to ban piracy yet it becomes more popular as the same companies release DLC that should have been in the game.

One thing my friends, Nintendo will rise again with the Wii U coming above all this DRM crap (hopefully) and Nintendo will rain once more!

Because i think people that hate DRM so much, would go to the length of buying a whole new console for their games.

There is little to no character customization. Plot is cookie-cutter boring, if not stupid, and is the same regardless of the class chosen (thus making replay or even experimenting with different classes) less of a draw for me. Voice acting is staid. The RPG elements, as others have pointed out, esp. the skill trees, are watered down, restrictive and mostly uninteresting. Character and plot progression are narrow and over-directed. Dungeons and environments are used and re-used ad nauseum (did they not learn from DA2?). Despite all these shortcomings I continue to play it; continue to click, click, click away, going on 16 hours now. The combat, power animations and baddie destruction is slick and fully satisfying, despite it all coming down to mindless button mashing. I'm compelled by some powerful Pavlovian impulse that Blizzard has tapped into (and that I was somehow immune to with WoW and Starcraft). So I've resigned myself to finishing the story and then perhaps playing some co-op, although I suspect the screen will be a complete mess of explode-y, obscuring animations when I do. BAD: Game cannot be played offline, even in single player, which is unnecessary and unfair for the consumer; Intrusive, unreliable always-online DRM causes many disconnection issues; Due to always-online functionality there are significant amounts of lag and framerate issues which diminish the overall quality of the experience; Weapon system is bizarre and poorly implemented with wizard characters casting spells out of a sword that they can't actually use; Other than clothing, characters cannot be customized, which makes the character selection seem a little out-dated; Character animations and graphics are boring and don't match the wonderful water-colour-like environments; Numerous balancing issues between classes that are going to take a while to iron out; Sound effects, voice acting and music are unremarkable; Stat points are automatically assigned upon levelling-up preventing players from creating truly unique character builds; Companion characters available when playing single player are not very useful and are quite boring additions to your adventure. OVERALL: There's nothing inherently wrong with Diablo 3 - it's a left-click marathon of a game with plenty of loot and loads of enemies to kill. But it's also one of the most stressful games I have ever experienced due to the totally unnecessary always-online DRM which is seriously detrimental to the industry and rather quite worrying. I remember playing the original Diablo and being utterly blown away by the between game animations, and the same for WOW. Okay DRM is a pain and the servers died a few times in the beginning. But I'm not going to mark the game against these, it seems to be the way most things are heading these days. It seems very much that the game engine isn't a million miles away from WOW, and uses a lot of the same graphics which in itself isn't such a bad thing as Blizzard always carry these things of with style, regardless of the cutesy graphics. However, the cutesy graphics do mean the atmosphere is not as oppresive as it was in the original games - it definitely loses something. Just to quickly cover the basics - Diablo is a game in which you run around dungeons and kill lots of critters. The main story is of a battle between heaven and hell and you basically level up until the story takes you to the Lord Diablo himself, who has rather rudely gate crashed the eternal realm. There are lots of weapons and armour drops all the way through and really the main crux of the game is in finding bigger and better armour and weapons. Once you start playing online with other players, the level of drops soon ramps up, as well as the difficulty level of the monsters.
Now as this is Diablo 3 you cannot review the game without comparing it to it's predecessors, the same as if you were reviewing a film, and for me this is where the game falls down. The rather high scoring critic reviews suprise me because the fact of the matter is that this game seems to have gone nowhere. It used to be a simple hack and slash click-click-click game, with a variety of spells or actions, and plenty of loot items to pick up - including scrolls, which are one off spells to casts. It is still a simple hack and slash click-click-click game except LESS variety in spells/actions and no scrolls anymore. It feels very much like the game has been dumbed down for the masses. And the thing is, it's been 10 years. TEN. That's an awful long time to spend failing to progress. And on the side Blizzard already have WOW, so they have an absolute wealth of suitable graphics to use and a wealth of experience in fantasy games. They seem to have played the hand towards nostalgia rather than innovative gaming.
So I would have to admit to being somewhat gutted about this game. It isn't awful, it just isn't new. And from an absolute powerhouse like Blizzard, I expect much more in terms of innovation and creativity, and I certainly don't expect them to move backwards in terms of complexity being as the first two games were not complex. And sadly it does seem to me that Blizzard are becoming more of a money making organisation than a serious developer of top quality games, especially after announcing their real money auction house. It is that great travesty of business and advertising - it ruins everything it comes into contact with. And Blizzard are slowly turning into a business enterprise, not a game developer. Many of the user reviews are scathing hit backs at the painful DRM system (meaning you cannot play single player without being online), which is perfectly understandable as it makes no sense to be online when you want to play by yourself. But I am much more upset about the lack of progress since Diablo II. Whoever came up with Diablo in the first instance was an absolute genius, and it was an amazing game. Whoever got hold of the license and created Diablo 3 should have doubled that genius with more involving and complex gameplay - they already had a great engine to work with! Instead, they seem to have lazily rehashed the game. It is addictive, that can't be denied, but if it was a piece of homework it would definitely have 'see me' written on it in red writing.

I've made it into Hell difficulty, and it's fun, but there's just nothing there to keep me playing. Expand

What struck me was that yes some of the skills and graphics do look great, but the game seems to be tailored to an audience other than Diablo fans. It caters to the casual gamer so much that if this game didn't have blood, gore and body bits it could have a substantially lower MSRB rating. When it comes to customization of your character you are more or less along for the ride. Stat points do not exist and your character will grow based on level, but not by your input. Skill trees do no exist and skills are unlocked as you level, a system that has been come to be expected in games of the day (just think COD). However, this system doesn't seem appealing for an RPG fan were certain choices are taken away from you, such as investment in prerequisites. Choices do occur when selecting skills from a pool (your left, right click, and numbers 1,2,3,4). From each pool you can only select one skill. This I didn't like at first, but at least you have to make a choice somewhere and this is likely necessary for balancing, maybe. It is nice though that you can customize each skill via the rune system, but the runes aren't created equal (unlocked at different levels) and we'll likely see the same one paired up with a particular skill nearly all the time due to effectiveness.

The game did bring back the nostalgic feel of Diablo exploration and item drop collection. However, some points to feel rather linear. I have yet to replay a part to confirm this and will not let this factor in rating, but the feeling was there nonetheless.

Additionally, some of the boss battles do seem rather cool and have potential for being heated and nerve-racking. At the moment though the starting difficulty is rather low and soloing the bosses or even tanking the earliest ones was not hard (I'm a witch doctor). However, with the end of Act one and the beginning Act II opening up this is shifting and I look forward to overcome challenges with companions.

The Co-op though is proving to be a bit of a disappointment, largely in part of the player cap in game has been dropped from eight (8)in Diablo 2 to the current four (4) in Diablo 3. These more intimate games are not exactly what I expected when buying a multiplayer game. I suppose thought I'll have to grudgingly learn to live with it, unless Blizzard can at least patch it to 6 (hint, hint). That said though we liked how you could see another players map and the ease of meeting up when joining a game via the banner system.

So far I suppose I enjoy the game, but as I play it I know its just a game and can walk away from it. It has not drawn me in either the story or character development. At this stage I do not think I will ever play this game as much as I had D2. D3 offers some new and interesting things to the action RPG genre (skill runes and some physics), but so far its linear skill development, lack of stats and reduced co-op have left us wanting and disappointed (used this word a lot because its true).

I gave this game a six, a score balanced between dissatisfaction (for what it is now) and optimization (for what it may become in patching or later acts, which I can't look into because the servers constantly down).

Really, it has about the same amount of challenge as its predecessors. I doubt it will keep me amused for long (certainly not as long as I'd hoped), but maybe the future content will be mildly interesting. Of course, given its shaky start, there is simply no telling when exactly that content will come. The connectivity issues are inexcusable; in no way does Blizzard deserve leniency in that regard. It might have been okay with their MMORPG eight years and many millions of dollars ago, but now? No. No, Blizzard. Unacceptable. However, I feel that once that's hammered out this game will equate to several movie's worth of entertainment (about $60) for the average gamer. Mind you, I feel the average gamer isn't going to pay out of pocket for gold and top-of-the-line pvp gear, but then I'm no marketing strategist. I -have- considered the underwhelming customization options and I've concluded that it's an improvement. Sure, they've taken away the skill points, but they have given each skill a lot of variants with which to mix and match. Now that I think about it, how in-depth was D2's skill point system REALLY? I don't know about you, but I always ended up maxing four or five skills and concentrating on those; you see the exact same thing here only they've taken skill-management-regret out of the equation. As per the Diablo design, D3 has a lot of loot variations with randomly generated dungeons and increasing difficulty for future tours. Mechanically, it works. Is it revolutionary? Nah. I was not expecting it to be. Blizzard isn't in the business of 'revolutionary'. BUT... once you sift through the mire of technical issue, you're left with a decently-executed dungeon crawl with potential for fun with groups of friends. Considering that Diablo 3 is free to play (for the most part), there's no harm in checking back in later months to see how patching has improved the experience. Sadly, it's no surprise that the deplorable launch has spread psychotic rage throughout the community, and despite there being a smorgasbord of stats, gear, challenges modes, and difficulty levels, hardcore gamers will not appreciate all the stream-lining. Some attitudes may change when they finally release their pvp content, but, again, who knows when that will be? For me, Diablo 3 would be in-the-green with a 7/10, if not for the incompetent launch and missing features. Certainly not the worst thing I've seen, though, and it may improve over time. Expand

There is no point in having more than one of each class because skills aren't built up and you don't place stat points, everyone has the exact same everything. Even when picking stats on gear it's pretty much a no-brainer. This also means that when the servers go down, even if your internet is fully operational, you aren't playing this game. At all.

When do the servers go down? So far, fairly often. The servers will always have to go down at some point for maintenance, so during those times you aren't playing this game.

The reasons Blizzard chose to enact the online-only play aren't entirely all that bad

    1) 24/7 Warden anti-cheat program to detect any kind of hackers
    2) DRM. You're not going to be able to pirate this game.

Is it worth it? Probably not. There are other ways to run anti-cheats that don't require servers. I love Blizzard as a company but they really screwed over a lot of people in this. To their credit, it's not like it was a surprise or anything though. They came out a while ago and said this is what they were going to do, and people still bought it anyway.

At first I got familiar with the errors for full servers and when I managed to get into the game I was fighting with the power called "server lag". In single player you face not only Diablo and his minions, but also Blizzard and it's stubbornness. Due to the constant internet connection requiered to play the game both in SP and MP ( the DRM in other words) Diablo 3 really made an impact on the gaming community and fans ... a bad one, unfortunately. Random people from random games getting dropped out of the games which they play with friends over in MP, people getting thrown back in the main menu because of connection lost thus making SP hard to even progress in story, since you were forced to re-fight the whole zone to get to where you were before. But enough about connection issues.
As for game performance, details and etc. : When it comes to polished games Blizzard knows how to deliver - close to 0 bugs in about 10 hours of gameplay (enough to finish off normal difficulty). Graphics wise the game is not really a gem for the eyes to gaze upon. As every other Blizzard game even an old PC would be able to run it smoothly and because of that even on MAX details and etc. the game is just about average compared to most modern day made games. The art is somewhat different from what I expected but that's just my opinion. In terms of audio and sound Blizzard has made some decent soundtracks for the different environments and cutscenes which is always a plus if you want to get the player in a certain mood or help him understand the depth of the atmosphere around him. The game as overall runs smooth and with no random drops in frames per second or any kind of audio bugs and etc.
Gameplay: Now this is where I am going on a rampage to criticize the game ...
First off - game was made by some of the devs behind the making of World of Warcraft and thus the game is just made plain simple ... When leveling up you don't get stat points, nor skill points to customize your build of your character, the only thing that makes you more different from any other person out there are the stats of your gear. It's strange how when you see the "LEVEL XX" above your character you start thinking "oh boy, how should I distribute my points" and then you remember - "oh ye, I can't do anything". Stats are automatically leveled up and spells get unlocked so you can't really do anything at all. You could perhaps differ from other people by customizing your spells with spell glyphs but then again - everyone will obviously select the ones who are best in slot. So far everything is World of Warcraft similar, isn't it ? Moving on - crafting. At first I was really hyped behind all this crafting of gems and items, but after I got familiar by spending gold to level those professions I once again got this though in my head "isn't this the same thing as the crafting in WoW?" ... and it really is. Auction house was added which the Diablo games never really needed. After I got through normal I decided to check the AH and what did I see ... hundreds of useless items flooding it making it a bit irritating.
What else am I missing ... the interface is somewhat what was to be expected modern version of the D2 interface with a little touch of WoW again with those quest tracking and etc. And before I conclude with the review here is what is the most annoying in the game - the limit of players in one MP game is 4, that's right - 4 ! Those that have more than 3 friends with which they want to play together - sorry, you won't be able ... get over it.

Final words to sum everything up: For 60 bucks you get a strictly controlled through DRM game which will requier you to play online your dose of single player action and if you're headed to MP be warned, you can only play with up to 3 of your friends in one game ... that is, of course, if you are ABLE TO CONNECT to the servers. D3 will offer you mediocore graphics and art plus audio and sounds at a decent level which you can run easily even on an older computer. For those such as myself who have tagged along from D1 through D2 in the new D3 you will not see anything "new". Blizzard took 4 years of time to develop a game which is more like Diablo 2 but with modern graphics, audio and interface and added to it useless features such as crafting of items and gear and above all an AH flooded much like World of Warcraft's one - lots of things, most of which not worth even the time to stop and look at them.

As I said in the start - I didn't expect much ... and didn't receive much in the end ... as expected of Blizzard's MMORPG devs - they don't know how to deliver to the hack and slash fans of the Diablo franchise ...

I love Warcraft, love WoW, love Starcraft. but by no means would I call myself a Blizz fanboy. I have to say, the game, whilst it is slightly addictive, it is very meh and mediocre at best. Very fun to pull a million mobs with my Barbarian, stun them and Hammer them all to death, but i see myself after running the game through once, putting it aside and never playing again. To me the game is one where you switch your brain off and spam click your mouse with no real skill depth or tactics, its a very cheap thrill that should have been developed alot better as a genre redefining RPG hacknslash and not a game that feels like i downloaded it off Steam from an indie producer...this is Blizzard we are talking about, a developer who redefined the MMORPG and Strategy genres single handedly in the 90's and early 2000's.

Has the corporate giant Activision really sapped all creativty from the team at Blizzard?. Sadly yes.

And to all the people complaining about server/login issues. Stop crying, its opening day. Obviously you have never attempted to login on WoW expac release day, now that is a nightmare and a half.

All in all, im having fun, and thats all you can ask from a video game. But really, considering the hype, the legacy of previous Diablo titles and the developer, i can actually understand why the community feels let down slightly.

Read them if you must but when someone says: "It's not as good as it could've been and there are a few flaws and I've only played Act 1...", yet gives it a 10, ask yourself some questions. I give it a 6. Why? Because it's a good, fun, playable (when connected!) game. It's not special, it doesn't bring anything new, it's not that pretty. The soundtrack is awesome but some sound effects are clearly from Diablo 1-2! My score is based on the product in relation with the price. 60$ for a game that looks like the old one, plays like the old one and feels like the old one isn't right. The first Act is mostly populated by the same monsters in Diablo 1-2. It also lacks polishing in some places, animations can be rough and the physics engine can be buggy. You can slap enemies out of the screen with low power attacks (they don't even die from that), some items will be sent spinning everywhere at crazy speeds. There is some rubber-banding, probably due to the fact that the servers are under lots of stress. The cut-scenes are excellent. The main problems are the need of a constant (and consistent) internet access which I believe was justified by the ability to buy (with real money) items making the game accessible mostly to people living in urbanized areas, the fact that it's basically the same game than before and the graphics which are not really up to date (even on maximum settings). It's like justifying a 60$ Solitaire/minesweeper game. I mean everyone played solitaire/minesweeper and it's a fun game...but you wouldn't pay for it! I expect to finish the game a second or third time as it's not really long either, a good game, but far from what was expected. Doesn't have the immersion of Skyrim, the excitement of Battlefield 3, the depth or SimCity 4. Funny thing is, as I try to compare this game to something somewhat recent, I can only think of games like Marvel, Ultimate Alliance: Hack, slash, loot, mission briefing "break", repeat. The difficulty and the joy of destroying daemons will be the only incentive to keep playing. In a nutshell, Diablo 2.5 at full price, plus the fact that you can't play when you don't have access to internet is limiting. Expand

***** I like the skill system. It still provides a steady stream of new stuff and the ability to customize your own gameplay through skill selections and then modifying those skills with runes. This happens without any need of a respec mechanic since you can switch skills and runes at any time. I anticipate that some sort of presets would be nice later on, but that could certainly be patched in. ***** Co-op play is still great as ever with some additional enhancements. The flags in town that teleport you to other players is a nice touch. The classes seem to have skills that will work well in a team setting. It's important that a party be able to take on bigger things by working together than if they were just 4 dudes banging on the same beast. I think that is the case. ****** The gameplay is Diablo. This is not really a positive or a negative because the isometric action game is a very well established thing at this point. D3 doesn't seem to advance the genre at all in this regard, but I'm not the sort of person who thinks that's always necessary. They nailed it as expected and no more. ***** The graphics are sub-par for a AAA $60 game. I'm not talking about the art style here, just about nuts and bolts. The engine feels very much to me like something that started development 12 years ago. I honestly think it would have benefited from throwing in the towel a few years ago and moving to Unreal engine (which of course Blizzard would never do). Not only are they only on par with a budget title, but my machine was getting only 30-40 FPS on high settings which is very low for the quality of the pixels on my screen. The most common response to this complaint I see is "gameplay > graphics". I say, why can't I have both? Plenty of titles look great and play well. Also, go back to playing D2 then. ***** The DRM system is abysmal and embarrassing. Last night was day 2 and the servers went down for (notified) reboot once. I got kicked without notification several other times. Add in constant latency and frequent lag spikes and you get an experience that isn't excusable in an MMO, much less a single player game. Note to Blizz: If you are going to instance a single player game, invest in fscking servers. The infrastructure team should be fired, and I'm not joking about that. At some point there has to be some responsibility for abject failure. The Old Republic had a much smoother launch and it's a real MMO. ***** My score might be higher if this wasn't Diablo, published by Blizzard, but it is and it was.

When Activision bought blizzard, I sort of knew things would change, but what I have seen to this day still shocks me. It was definitely a move for the worse. I mean look at the new WoW expansions (I dont play, but pandas? really? I know its in warcraft III, but come the hell on.)

I love the dark look of DII, and you can tell they completely strayed away from it. For the worse in my opinion

    so here we go

    1. Gameplay. The hack and slash is fun, and the on screen visuals make it so. WIth explosions and fireballs, etc. The game is too easy. Less than 18 hours of gameplay time, and I was done with normal mode. This is insane. They should have made the acts a little more in depth, I mean its a massive story about good and evil, but the story flow was absolutely awful. The skill system is awful too. You have no real choice on character build anymore, and you have no consequences for building a **** character. I could solo diablo with a witchdoctor, with 4 people in game at the end, and only level 30. I find this to be too easy. Gameplay gets a 6/10

    2. Graphics: The graphics are ok. I give the graphics on this game a 5/10. The world looks good, but you start noticing minor details that are missing, or dont make sense. And the 3/4 camera angle isnt too great. I do like the 3d environments, but they could have done more. We should have been able to rotate the camera. All we have is a zoom feature which is completely worthless. Graphics get a 5/10

    3. Sound: The soundtrack in the beginning is great. It reminded me of DII, and the fact I was going back in to fight the demons of hell, to save mankind. But about halfway through the game, I stopped noticing the sound, which causes me to think it is really bland. Sound gets a 5/10

    4. Online Experience: I am rating the online experience separately, because frankly, it is lacking, and should be a whole other component to the game. There is little online experience here for a multiplayer game. Where are the guilds? where are the battle arenas? The rewards for completing challenges? Things like that? Who cares about earning some achievement that really leads you to a stupid banner unlock? Online Experience gets a 3/10.

This game to me BARELY edges out a 6/10 rating. Blizzard is known for there amazing games, but they have fell extremely short on this, to the point that I really do not think they can recover the diablo franchise.

I could give it a lower score based on what I was expecting, but I think a 6 is pretty fair score for this game.. However, there are things that are not good, and these things won't be changed:

    - no full-fledged 1on1 PvP! This is not WoW nor is it a MMORPG, so why don't they want to also balance around 1on1 PvP? Even with the addition of PvP to the game at a later time, 1on1 PvP won't be supported (rankings, rewards etc.)!
    - no world PvP and no possibility to attack other players at any place in the game, at any time, against their will. We don't need that many care-bear player protection mechanisms, after all this is a dark world full of evil... and that evil should also come from other players!
    - only four players can join a game at a time!

Instead we have a game that, at its core, is a decent mediocre mutant spawn of WoW and of its predecessors. A game that is full of a multitude of good ideas that have gone wrong, skewed from their original perfection of Diablo 2 by over-worrysome developers who were pressured by forces outside their control to make the game more accessible. *COUGH* ACTIVISION* COUGH*. In essence, Blizzard forgot the age old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". They forgot the Diablo community is built on a foundation of hardcore gamers, people who like customizing their character down to the last spec and skill point and who enjoy playing brutally hard single player, even if they are not connected to the Internet! The DRM Snafu alone is enough to enrage the entire Diablo community, just look around this forum, but poor graphics, a dumbed down skill system, and bugs such as not being able to use a basic attack skill adds insult to injury. When I first played as a monk, after the first 5 minutes of play I was locked out from actually using my weapons of choice, (a sword and a shield), because the game developers assumed I would want to use Monk-only type weapons. I was pissed. Diablo, at heart, should be a game based on the customization of YOUR character and the loot you find to suit your style of play. Instead we are forced into a cookie cutter mould of what the developer's believe we should be playing like. Why shouldn't MY Monk want to attack his enemies with a sword rather than a bow-staff or iron knuckles? The choice should be ours, but it is not. And due to all the aforementioned reasons I am disheartened to say this game is not the real Diablo "Name" that we grew to love, way up there on its pedestal, and does not live up to its hype. It is a shadow of its former self. However, despite this game not Truly living up to the Diablo Name, there are some moments during the campaign that feel somewhat magical. Hitting monsters with devastating spells and blowing them to bits is still as satisfying as it was 11 years ago. Some of the boss fights offer interesting challenges. The Cut Scenes are absolutely gorgeous, but are too few and far between. In the end I am entertained enough by the gameplay to continue on to the end of the game, though there are moments where I throw up my hands in disgust. I hope that in the coming months Blizzard finds a way to hotfix and patch its way through upgrading this game in to the one we all dreamed it would be: the one it had so much potential to be, but alas I fear the Diablo Name is doomed to gaming hell. So let's go play Torchlight 2!!!!!!! :D Expand

Mindless clicking and collecting loot is all the game should be. Besides that, the FMV's and fluid gameplay is all the game really has going for it. The game is also much less buggy at launch than most other games being released today. As for the bad, graphics are passable for 2006 standards, sounds and voice acting are so-so, no talent trees like D2, no character body customization? wtf?, obviously the always online thing is a pain as well. My biggest problem with the game is that its a loot driven game and the auction house just about kills it. Rare items (yellow) can be bought for a very small amount. Decking out your character for a couple thousand gold makes the game much easier and the anticipation of getting loot from a boss is non-existent. There is no bind on equip (like WoW), so eventually the auction house will be flooded with every rare and possibly legendary item for slightly higher than vendor value as they're recycled. My friend and I pledged not to use the auction house anymore to keep the game in the state it was meant to be played.
Like Starcraft 2 at launch, this game is only worth half of what they're charging. I'm losing faith in Blizzard and Torchlight 2 will likely be a much better game all around, for only $20.

This should have been avoidable. Blizzard already runs the largest MMO on the planet, WoW. They also launched StarCraft II which required gamers to be connected to play Single Player and started with multiplayer from day one. That launch did not turn into the catastrophe Diablo III's did.

Blizzard's games have been intertwined with servers since the original Diablo and the launch of Battle.net. They're pretty much experts in this department by now.

Then there's the stress test and the pre-sales data. Either Blizzard rushed the launch of an already delayed game without the proper infrastructure in place, or the company made a bottom line call to just ignore the numbers. Either way, they totally dropped the ball. They apologized, but did so in a less than sincere way, with some jokes, and stating they thought they overshot the server stress-load estimate.

    Now, the DRM.

One commenter compared buying a video game to buying a car, while another said you cannot compare the two.

What makes this different than a car? I get to test-drive a car. And not just a piece of the car, the whole car. I can take it on the freeway, try out the AC, play with the gadgets, everything. Then, I can decide whether or not to buy it. If I do buy it and decide within so many days I don't like it, I usually can return it or exchange it, especially if it's brand new.

Diablo III on the other hand... I cannot really test play the game before launch. Even if I play the first couple of hours, I will be disappointed. I'll barely be able to touch the tip of crafting available, the battles will seem very mundane and repetitive, the story not all that compelling, the crypt and graveyard graphics a bit dull.

So, I buy the game. If I don't like it, I cannot return it. I cannot exchange it. $60 down the drain. I cannot even sell the game to someone else.

Many positive player reviews dismiss the negative ratings as simply disgruntled players who could not jump right into the game on midnight on launch day. But if you actually read those reviews, you'll find them littered with other complaintsâ

DRM and permanently Internet-Con, no LAN, well that could have a better solution, like an offline mode. Well, let's talk about the In-GameThings are changing, that's the most important thing, that make our world not a boring place. Same I thought about D3. I would be really disappointed, if D3 would have the same game mechanics as there was in D2, just only refreshing graphics and story. DRM and permanently Internet-Con, no LAN, well that could have a better solution, like an offline mode. Well, let's talk about the In-Game situations:
I like the world, you've been set into. The varied environment, landscapes and dungeons supports your game progress visually (forests, swamps, desert, hell,...) and the intermezzos with the NPC and little chats between you and your fellow are refreshing ways of keeping away the sometime monotonously "hack, slay, loot!". Apropos, let's talk about the new way to skill your char. At the first time, I was wondering how you can skill your individual char, like in D2, where you'd have to choose the skills you want out of (mostly) two from three main groups available, when you can have all skills just to pick in six slots? After continuing the game, this new system helps me to try out, what skill combination fits , because it allows you to experiment (let me see this one. Mhh, not good, or maybe this here...) and to adept to some sort of enemies (first a combo for mass-destruction, and then switch to a combo for a single Boss) . That was a great defect in D2, especially in Nightmare and Hell. But my question still remains: How can I create a unique char, and a second char of the same class but with an other style? Well, at my point of view it's impossible and that discourage you to make an second char at the same class and to play the game with it once more (for 4 times!). Blizzard should have combine this out of D2 and D3. Combine every skill your want, but all skills are divided in 3 groups, and at the begin you have to choose one (and in Hell a second one). My last point ist the story. It ist very difficult to make a story, that keeps you play-through and play-through and play-through and play-through. In most cases the story is good and ok. But I think, in a game, that's designed to play it through over and over again you can not choose a story-plot that has a intense punchline with the intention to enforce an end like: There must be a Final with Diablo in Diablo (1,2 or 3). Act 1-3 is like the story in D2, but Act 4, I mean, the story that directs you to Act 4 had discouraged me to play it again, not for ever, but I'll take a brake - maybe the aftermath of Mass Effect 3 -

That's not rating the art, that's rating it's delivery. That's the equivalent of giving The Avengers a 3/10 because you waited in a long line for your tickets and your theater smelled bad. I'm not trying to dismiss the shortcomings of the game itself, because there are certainly a few. The graphics may be dated. Veterans of this franchise know this has always been the case. One of Diablo II's biggest demerits was the aged visuals. The art styling has certainly changed from the previous entries. I like it when a developer takes risks going for a specific style. If every game I played strived for photo realism I'd get pretty bored. I get what they were trying to do artistically, with the whole epic story on a painted canvas, and I personally liked it. I do think the game is too bright by default. Even changing the gamma settings to their lowest in-game wasn't enough. I had to adjust my monitor's settings. You could claim my display wasn't calibrated properly, but I would take that as a direct insult and slap you silly. The lack of talent points... disappoints. See what I did there? This does make it feel like an RPG-Lite. There were certain encounters during the game where it was convenient to swap out skills that better suited the situation. Still... I think a respec option or dual spec would have appeased myself and many others more than the runes solution. I like customizing the spells but it doesn't feel like the character you're playing is your own, like the predecessors. I'm not sure why this design decision was made. Maybe to appeal to a novice/new generation of gamers? Cause the game didn't have a large enough fan base... The game's music and sound effects are exceptional. If you think different, go order another set of Sonic Earz or something. While Matt Uelman's talents are now with Runic, Blizzard seemed to just stay the course. You'll hear no complaints from me concerning that. The voice acting is solid, typical for a Blizzard game. The greatest form of flattery is imitation. Blizzard's genre defining franchise has influenced some excellent titles recently. Runic Games (Blizzard North - Part Deux) released the exceptional Torchlight in 2009. The sequel's release is on the horizon with multiplayer included this time around. For those that love stats and building crazy class combinations, I can't recommend Titan Quest (with Immortal Throne expansion) enough. I enjoyed playing this game. Was it everything that I had hoped and expected it would be? No, no it was not. I'm not going to throw in plot spoilers, promise. The varied scenery is nice. The character building felt overly simplified. There were points in the story where I tilted my head and said, "Really?!" The campaign felt shorter than the previous titles. The amount of time that has passed between sequels, I believe, is a disadvantage for Blizzard. The nostalgia conjured, anticipation fueled, and expectations built by this single title nearly demands perfection. Diablo III was not perfection. Maybe I, along with many others, were too naive and expected just that. I get the feeling the same game would've been more well received if it was a fresh IP from another developer. Expand

Potions: Although I am incredibly thankful I don't need to stack my belt with potions every time I die, or need to buy more, I am frustrated that they added a cool-down between uses. When there are several hordes attacking me, as a sorceress I struggle since I have to rely on health being dropped; usually around the hordes so if I run towards it I get killed. There is absolutely no reason to have a cool-down on potions. Death: You respawn where you left off with the only penalty being durability, which you fix with the gold that is otherwise useless in the game. So death is no longer the dreadful ordeal of losing gold, any overflow items, having to put new potions back on the belt, and losing XP. You don't have to find your body and fight the monsters over again, or worry about losing everything if you can't beat them. And as angry as I was when I died in Diablo 2, that added a lot of the fun to the game since it kept you on the edge of the seat. Now if I die, I just spawn right back where I left off and don't care about the few repairs, and that takes away some of the fun. However, I should mention I do like how death is used during boss fights. You die, your partner needs to recover your body which can be difficult. There is no more just jumping through the portal and continuing, which I see as a huge improvement. Skills: This is where D3 becomes WoW, and where the game destroys itself. All of the skills can be changed at any moment, and that takes away from creating several characters of the same class stacking them differently. Although you won't get screwed over in Hell mode for stacking yourself wrong earlier on in the game, now everybody who has a wizard is exactly the same. There are no more ice or lightening focused sorceresses, or a spell or pet focused necromancer. There is no seeing characters of the same class come in with a spell you've never tried out that encourages you to want to create another character to get it. You can't put points into strength or intelligence; D3 does this automatically. I can't stress how much I am frustrated with this, since I usually like to have several characters and develop them differently. And there isn't that moment when you get into Hell Mode and start swearing from having messed up, which I actually enjoyed. For me, this is just too user friendly like WoW had been, and doesn't pander to the Diablo niche. Action: I do love the action. Plenty of new monsters, tons of hordes to kill rather than killing one person at a time like in WoW. I like watching spells and action sequences. And I love how gold doesn't need to be clicked on to pick it up; saving a lot of time. Running is also always on. Another thing that remains great is that there is no longer the ability to be the a-hole who runs forward and steals every item that drops since each player gets his own stashes to look at. Maps: They don't seem to be completely random, which helps. For example, I no longer need to worry about teleporting over to the Stony Field and have to wander around until I find my way out. It's pretty much straight forward in the important areas, which saves a lot of time, with plenty of different maps for buildings and other things. I love dead ends and not knowing exactly where things are, and I love the random enemies that are put into it. Bosses: I am very happy with them. They are challenging, but not impossible. Each one keeps you on your toes, especially the boss at the end of Act 2 which I found to be the hardest in the game. Also, as I mentioned, if you die you need a friend to resurrect your body for you.

So in the end, Diablo 3 is an incredibly fun game with good graphics, plenty of action, and a lot of improvements from things like no longer needing somebody to make a portal to teleport to their character. It also forewarns you when there is a boss to make sure you are prepared. Blizzard did a lot of things right making this game. But without the customizable characters it destroys almost all replay value. After I get to the highest level with my character I can't start over in an attempt to perfect it. I also am not happy that hostile mode did not come standard, since I looked forward to slicing of my friends' ears. I am aware it'll be on a patch, but come on. It's a fun game, a lot of improvements, but it feels too much like Wow at certain parts. Without customization, it is not a true Diablo game.

This sets the scene for several different scenarios where you might not actually be able to even play the game, even if just to tinker around with character generation or play through the whole game once-through in some remote place.

The skills and statistics on the items have been homogenized and dumbed down, big time, ostensibly to make the game more appealing to the masses. And the skills aren't very exiting either. You get all exited to get a new ability, only to find out it doesn't work well at all with the other abilities you have, or is barely different from the ability you were already using, and thus superfluous. To be fair Diablo 2 had a few skills like this as well, but at least you had a feeling of control as you stepped past them to fill the other more useful abilities with more points, or experimented with different 'builds'. You'll find not much for builds in this game --- the metagame surrounding Diablo 3 is pretty much non-existent.

The dungeons are also far too long, and you can go for a good 20-30 seconds down a hallway without encountering a single monster. Or sometimes you encounter like... 4 monsters, kill them in 1 second if you're a melee class, or 10 seconds if you're a sorcerer or demon hunter, and move on. No, you don't want to be a ranged class right now in this game...

On the plus side, yeah, it can be fun to blow up lots of baddies. It's just too bad there's not much statistical depth or story behind you doing it. It could have been alot better.

Good Points the game is fun, you feel exhilarated when your character can use abilities to cut a swathe through the enemy. Locking the stats can seriously reduce the rampant cheating that occurred in Diablo2, as well as the persistent online world, even though a little annoying especially if you don't have good internet. The use of percentages throughout ensures that all skills remain useable and relevant fixing a Diablo 2 problem where one had to totally retool your skills when you went from normal to nightmare or nightmare to hell.

Bad Points the graphics are a bit dated, the locking of attributes, skills is a double edged sword. I could argue for the locking of the stats as that can reduce the cheating that was rampant in Diablo2. They could have linked skill damage to stats as opposed to weapon damage which just opens another loophole. This loophole mind you may have been devised to make them money through the auction houses, however potentially can ruin the game from abuse. The locking of item stat association has unfortunately led to the ludicrous fact that a mage could theoretically wield a sword with the same aplomb as a barbarian. Other issues In Titan Quest you had to press a key to loot which meant no interference when fighting, however in Diablo3 a game many years its senior you are accidentally picking up objects instead of attacking enemies. There should be a way to transfer objects from one of your characters to another one, up to me writing this not sure if there is outside of the auction house.

The lack of skill customization unfortunately removes almost all re-playability in the game, because while the runes give you good variability, all you have to do is to equip the others to see how they work.

This kills one of the better aspects of Diablo2 where you could have 3 or more different types of Amazon or Paladin etc. They have simplified the game too much, in an effort to distill a fun game they have lost the essence of what makes a good RPG and followed in the footsteps of their competition EA. This has resulted in a game that a lot of persons will pay for and play however has lost its RPGness.
I would implore these publishers to go back to the drawing board or forever lose one of the most enduring, most followed genre in computer games. While generally less is more in this case less just made you feel cheated..... out of an RPG......again.

The game probably deserves a 7.5 or an 8, but the always-online requirement warrants a slightly lower score, especially when lag affects the single player experience (which is common in Australia with its draconian telecommunications infrastructure).

The game is very "loot-centric". If you do not go in expecting an award winning plot then you should be fine with the story. The graphics are just OK with some of the backgrounds looking very good. (This is fine as Blizz has to appeal to mid to lower end systems). Replayability seems fair as you may try out each class, but the levelling up process (and most of the game) are fairly linear.

Its a good game that you will get several hours of enjoyment from, but it's not the be all and end all of action RPGs. Let the game appeal to your inner warmonger and play this to hack, slash, pillage and hopefully have some mindless fun!

I do however like the destructible environment. * Like other Diablo games the game is addictive. At least until you reach Hell or Inferno (depending on your ability) where the game kind of loses it's appeal. Trash mobs that are more powerful than Diablo become somewhat common as well as being one shot by most of them. It eventually becomes much easier to just buy gear upgrades which again kills and replay value. Cons
*Despite Blizzard's mantra "when it's ready" and its 10 year development cycle this game wasn't ready when it was released. Blizzard hyped release parties but because of server problems (even when playing solo) most people couldn't even log into the game for the first few days. Some people say that this should be expected but I call it unacceptable. If a game is released then that means that it has Blizzard stamp of approval. * There's absolutely no need to require a constant internet connection to play this game in single player mode. This means that at some point in the future, even if it's 20 years from now people who purchased this game and have the CD won't be able to play it any more. * The auction house ruins a game that pretty much entirely based on gear. * The idea to not make any items BoP or BoE blows my mind. This means that every item that ever drops in the game for every player will always exist in the economy unless someone purposely vendors or salvages it. Think about that. Every item ever dropped. * The talent trees are a step backwards from that of D2. * The replay value is a lot less than that of D2.

After waiting day after launch ( since I couldn't get in) game literally killed my excitement little by little. Game is a total step-back compared to predecessor. While its nice to switch around skills for a while, blizzard totally killed experimentation with skill points and uniqueness of skills. Skill trees in diablo 2 used to be crystal clear to read and compare and showed damage done as well as gave synergies to make it really interesting. On top of that attribute points are allocated automatically. That leaves player with no choices making character boring. Story is not memorable at all beside few little moments. They managed to make the game so generic that it pains me to say this. Game is boring after a while. It doesn't bring anything really innovative to the table(and I would say it even takes away). Some would say that they brought auction house and characters are more balanced for PvP but again(what PvP?) there's no PvP. Personally I finished the game on normal and I'm not so sure that there's enough to keep me going. There's only four players in a group and maps seem very small. They had 12 years to make a great polished game. It seems that Blizzard prioritizes MMos now so everything else is an addition. Instead of evolving great game and implementing more ideas into the game, blizzard managed to give diablo 3 a console feel. Yes I said that right, console. Game would be fine as a release for a console. Just to sum it up. Blizzard somehow managed to avoid almost everything that was great about diablo 2 and make something(some would say different) but I would say worse since as of now I don't see myself playing it 12 years from now as I did with diablo 2. Some newcomers might like it, but seasoned players growing up on diablo and diablo 2 surely wont be so happy and they make majority. I guess they only hope lies in Torchlight 2 which is going to cost 1/3 of what diablo 3 did and seems much better in aspect of uniqueness and implementation. Well we'll have to wait a little since release date is set to summer 2012. Thank you for reading my rambling and I hope someone from Blizzard wakes up and realizes that they wasted pretty big opportunity to make even bigger bucks.PS Blizzard if you ever need help with ideas and implementation just contact me since there's a serious lack of talent on your team. The main issue that I have with the game is that it just isn't fun to me. I can understand that Diablo II was great back in the day, and playing this game must bring back good memories to fans. However, I never played Diablo I or II, so I feel that I might have a more unbiased opinion. And I just don't see how this game is considered up to modern standards. The just feels like a long, boring dungeon crawl with bad graphics and a slightly-above-average story.

Worst of all, the game effectively offers only one difficulty level. I was playing with 2-3 friends the whole time, who are all decent gamers, and with this group there was no challenge whatsoever in the game. We only ever died if we "stood in the fire," which is a lame game mechanic that Blizzard seems to love. Most boss fights lasted literally 30 seconds. I wasted most of my money on crafting, which I found was completely inferior to just buying gear from the auction house. And somehow I still had enough money to buy all the gear I ever wanted.

I understand that you unlock another difficulty level after you complete a playthrough, but why would I play a game again if I didn't enjoy it the first time? I was initially expecting to play the game multiple times, or at least try to find the secret level, but now none of us want to play it again. In conclusion: nothing to see here, just another over-priced, mediocre big-ticket game that's been rated way too highly by the press. It's not a bad game, but it doesn't feel up to modern standards in terms of gameplay, graphics, or length. If it were about $20-$30 cheaper, then I might recommend it.

It's true that Diablo 3 was plagued by launch issues, but launch issues are expected from almost every game; especially one with the largest launch day player-base for any PC title in the history of, well, PC titles. To Blizzard's credit, Launch day woes were resolved through an aggressive onslaught of patches before the week had even ended, and no review or score should hold launch issues against a game that sold over 3.5 million copies in it's first day. Ignoring the the launch day disaster leaves us with a game that, while expertly produced, may not be so fondly remembered by history as previous installments in the franchise have been. For starters, Diablo 3's art direction (however much criticism was leveled against it during development) is as polished, focused, and well executed as all Blizzard games have become expected to be. The graphical fidelity of Diablo 3 is not state of the art; and for a very good reason. It was never meant to be. Diablo 3's graphical requirements are designed to be accessible, and in this regard the development team at Blizzard for Diablo 3 have done quite well despite the limitations they set for themselves. The lonely, desolate feel of Diablo 1 & 2 is still present in the third dimension, and overall design is still top notch. The cinematic cutscenes in Diablo 3 are probably the highest quality that can be produced with current technology and look fantastic. Unfortunately while the characters in Diablo 3's cutscenes are all jaw-gapingly pretty, Diablo 3's story fails to garner a similar reaction. In all honesty Diablo 3's writing is not bad enough to induce vomit, but it will certainly work your gag reflexes. Which is unfortunate because one of the best parts of Diablo 2 was it's dark, mysterious story of interweaving stories culminating in a showdown with Diablo, and ultimately resulting in the destruction of the Worldstone. Diablo 2's engaging story was certainly one of the factors behind the hype buildup for Diablo 3. I won't spoil anything about Diablo 3's story, but it's safe to say that story will most likely not be a replay value for most people. Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately depending on how you look at it) Diablo 3's story and campain are fairly short. Expect to be through the campaign on normal difficulty in anywhere from a few hours to a day, depending on how completionist you tend to be. Nightmare difficulty takes only slightly longer, and is only slightly more difficult as well. Hell mode presents a fair leap in difficulty from both normal and nightmare difficulties, but by the time you beat the story for the 3rd time you will most likely be at or around level 60 with decent enough gear to run all 3 difficulties without too much trouble. Inferno, however, is a different story altogether. Most player's first experience in Inferno mode will most likely be dying to cannon fodder that are suddenly and mysteriously able to kill less durable classes in only a few swipes. More problematic are field minibosses which are transformed from what were essentially free magic quality loot into literal roadblocks preventing you and your friends (if you happen to be playing with them) from moving on. This is because Loot tables are set up to drop the most desirable and consistently level 60 gear from field bosses to encourage grinding out caverns and maps, and as a result field bosses are meant to be the most difficult encounters. Most actual story related boss encounters including Diablo itself are rather scripted and easy to defeat even on Inferno, and the loot they drop is accordingly scaled down. The result being that players are discouraged from farming bosses over and over and are instead encouraged to run entire dungeons or indeed acts to farm the rarest of loot. It isn't a bad thing to encourage per se, but fighting the lords of hell holds significantly less gravitas when reading their attacks tends to play out like an intense game of Simon Says.

But while the difficulty of Inferno at first encounter is frustratingly high, the actual mechanics and features of the game itself are conflictingly shallow. Gone are the stat points, skill points, and inventory management of Diablos past. In Diablo 3 everything is automatic, and you are given the option at a click of a button to create a town portal anywhere and anytime you want. The auction house is a good way to obtain items that are most likely leagues better than the ones you find for a relatively low price, and the addition of a real money auction house is honestly just valid response to gold farmers who would otherwise offer the same services. In the end, Diablo 3 is a well produced Blizzard product which does ARPG as well as is possible within the current formula. Which is a downright shame because Diablo 3 could have been a Blizzard's biggest chance to turn things upside down and breathe new life into the aging ARPG genre.

Diablo 3 is a mixed bag of delicious chocolate and **** shaped to look like chocolate. The gameplay in general is still fun, and the supposed dumbing down of the skill and attribute system actually works for me. This allows players to experiment with different builds without resorting to recreating a character again just to try something new. The exclusion of manual distribution of attribute points is a little missed but ultimately doesn't take away too much from the game. The enemies in the game are generally well designed and fun to kill. There are, of course, some exception that make the game totally unfun to play: namely Soul Lashers (monsters that lash at you with their tongues from afar, move really quickly and somehow do massive damage out of nowhere), kamikaze imps that hide behind doors and blow up the instant you open the door; yes its a surprise unpleasant as it is but it just gets old and cheap really quickly. Some attributes of Elites are also very annoying like Invulnerable minions which make all the creatures accompanying the elite unkillable and also soaks up damage and blocks your path to the elite. Couple that with enemies that retreat and attack from afar and you got yourself a recipe for fun times!

The story , as in the plot, is fine; nothing great, just... fine. But the delivery is where everything is flushed down the toilet. Main plot lines are extremely cheesy. The scriptwriter must have had a lot of experience writing children's book because it really seems like they are the target audience for such unoriginal and tacky lines. Be it the constant whining of Diablo, which really takes away from the "terrifying" feel of the lord of terror. Or how the master of tacticians Azmodan essentially discusses his tactics with the player ever so often. Or how Magdha, a character that could only be discribed as the Jar Jar Binks of Diablo, narrates her plans like an episode of Dora the explorer. The list goes on, and trust me the list is loooong. Stupid, juvenile scriptwriting. There is, of course, some redemption in the "other" lines, of which I am sure did not come from the same person that wrote the main script. Lore books and lines from the followers are favorful and entertaining. A special nod to the deeply religious templar Kormac and to Covertus Shen. Pick it up, pick it up :)

Also, the always online part of the game is really annoying. There is absolutely no way you can play single player when the server goes down. As if i'm playing some kind of MMO. There are of course many reasons and justifications for this but ultimately, its just really annoying not being able to play by yourself when you want to.

If you're looking for a nice hack and slash game with good mechanics and replayablility, and you have a good internet connection and don't live in Australia, then yes, please give this a try. But if you're looking for a game that has good immersion and story, please for goodness sake look elsewhere because you would be sorely disappointed. I had quite high hopes for this game but unfortunately, it wasn't met. Blizzard was known for quality storytelling in its Warcraft, starcraft and Diablo series but they really dropped the ball with this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a little over 60 hours into the game, and I will be the first one to tell you that while it is very good, there are a lot of things that just leave me scratching my head. The biggest problem is that the elite items you need to even be able to play in Inferno difficulty never drop. In the time I have played, I have yet to see a SINGLE legendary or set item drop. Part of me wonders if they've done that to try, and get people to spend money in the RMAH (if that's their plan it's worked on me). One of my favorite things about Diablo 2 is that you would be rewarded somewhat regularly by getting good items. I think that was why it was so addictive. This is more akin to playing a slot machine that won't pay out. The only legendary and set items I've been able to get my hands on were from the auction house. It's a very good looking game. Especially when comparing it to Diablo 2, it's obviously a vast improvement. It's not nearly as cartoony as WoW, but it just doesn't feel as evil as D2 or even D1. I'm pretty disappointed that the graphics don't support SLI. Maybe they will in a future patch, but I wish they would have spent less time making cinematics that everyone will watch a exactly once and skip them going forward, and more time making the game run better. It can get choppy, and the framerate can slow to a crawl if there's too much going on at once (even with a new computer). I did a Witch Doctor, and while it's definitely fun to rain toads down on my enemies, there are a lot of flat out WORTHLESS skills that they put in there. Toad of Hugeness? Spider Queen? Snake to the Face? Comical skills at best, but they feel like filler material to me. Zombie dogs were useful until about halfway through nightmare when they started dying instantly. WD needs some serious buffs because right now, you can just about guarantee that every other elite monster is going to kill you about a dozen times in inferno (and probably break all your items). Speaking of magic enchanted monsters, I'm a little confused why they're so much more powerful that the unique ones you run into. I can kill monsters with purple names and act bosses easily enough, but the champion ones with 3-4 magical enchantments? Wait til you run into your first pack of, oh I don't know, vampiric, extra health, plagued, waller zombies. I can't believe there's people who play hardcore mode...

Despite my gripes though, it's still a good game. Though I'm not sure if I'm playing it because I truly love it, or if I'm playing it trying to relive my Diablo 2 nostalgia. Time will tell. It's definitely more linear, and you really don't have that sense of community like you had in D2. I think that's because there's really no interface anymore for you to chat in outside games, or even pick the games you want to play in (currently if you join a public game, you pick what quest you want to play, and it puts you in a random game with other people on that same quest). Hopefully Blizzard will be diligent about making meaningful improvements to the game. I've been playing the Diablo series since the last 90's, and would hate to see it end like this. At the end of the day it's a fun hack and slash game, but it doesn't feel as much like a Diablo game as it should.

The game is great to play with friends from lvl 1 to lvl 60 (about 3-4 days). It has nice effects, appealing graphics, dynamic combat. However, it becomes boring at lvl 60, as it gets repetitive and turns into a grinding game. Bots own the game economy, the difficulty level is mostly inadequate. Maybe future patches will change this: who knows?
