-Achievements add a small but fun element to the game.
-Gameplay is smooth and animations such as exploding enemies is enjoyable
-Conversations and side stories are interesting and a change of pace the first couple playthroughs

Good and bad at same time:
-The leveling system is straight forward and does not require hours of grinding to reach the level cap.
-No skill trees and stat point distribution allows you to focus on loot and killing but does not make your character feel unique. It gives you the flexibilty to try new builds and change your skills to work best with whatever group you play with at any given time
-Grouping with friends and creating game is quick but doesn't allow you to make games people can look for or go back to previous difficulties and is centered solely on what quest you select which is restricted by level.
-Requires an online connection at all times. This might be frustrating for those that only want to play single player but If it reduces hacking and duping that plagued previous Diablo games then it is welcome. Due to the very bad latency though I have already heard claims that it is possible to duplicate items.

    Cons:
-Itemization is horrendous. After hour upon hours I have yet to see any legendary or set items drop but I already have blue items with better stats and more damage than the best legendary items. Legendaries should be above average rare items with rare items having the potential to be better than legandaries with near perfect stat rolls. Blue items drop way too easy and it is very discouraging to have essentially no goal in terms of items except for finding another blue or yellow item with more of you main stat and more vitality. Many Diablo 2 players can recite nearly all of their pieces of gear by name and I don't see how that will become the case in this game.
-The story was okay but the ending seemed very rushed and short.
-When grouping you are unable to use your companions and companion customization/gearing provides little to no benefit except when soloing.

    TLDR;

Very fun game but missing the best things that have made Diablo 2 such a huge long lasting sucess. Hopefully they are listening and will fix these things with an update or expansion similarly to what LOD did for Diablo 2.

The biggest problem are the skills. Not having skill points and the limitation of the skills you put on your bar creates too many limitations. With all classes I find myself constantly wanting to swap out skills for different situations and it's not easy/fun/fast to do it. Why can't you have multiple configured preset skill bars? Why are there skills with long cool downs that I can't swap out until they finish (I understand why but, GOD it is really annoying sometimes).

It feels like you have to keep "working around" the damn skill system.

Killing groups of monsters and getting loot is pretty good. graphics, animation is good. The story and cinematic cut scenes are good.

The server play is fairly bad. There's a lot of latency even in single player, but I have found with groups it gets even worse. Lots of "rubber banding" stunting, freezing, and sometimes that results in death and it's very aggravating. I just couldn't imaging playing hardcore with the game in this state.

Overall, I'm glad Diablo was released and that I got to finish it. Improved graphics, story, cutscenes, are great. The skill system is unsatisfying, the loot system doesn't feel as exciting as diablo 2, the crafting system is kind of boring, purchasing storage and leveling your crafters is just a big gold sync to keep gold important and feels more like a chore than an exciting achievement. And the achievements system is similar to what you find in other blizzard games and brings no innovations there. Custom banners are nice.

7/10 - Good but with some frustrations and disappointments.

So now about being online all the time. Who came up with such a bad idea. I play on a laptop so no way for me to take my laptop and play somewhere with no internet connection (train , plane...) or at least I don't want to pay for while on the go.
    The game itself:
The graphics are pretty poor for such a long awaited game. The story is so poor that I don't even follow anymore.
Let be clear the best part of the game is the fighting and looting and so it should be. Fighting is fun, fast and furious. Looting is plentiful.
The game is very easy to pick up. there is no learning curve install and play it.
For whatever it is worth if you re ready to bear to be connected non stop to play even in single mode this game is fun. It is not the big blockbuster I was expecting and I am moving back to consoles as soon as I am done with Diablo 3 and from what I see it won't be long.
Hopefully this kind of "big Brother" control won't come to console soon but I fear it is closer than we think.

As for story, repetitiveness, item farming, I see no difference with Diablo 2. I think a lot of us have a different impression of Diablo 2 because we were younger. Today, I would rush through D2 in a day and farm items over and over, same deal here. RMA AH is not great, but consider 1. D2 probably had the largest illegit item selling market of any game ever made and 2. Still getting lols out of Metacritic user reviews for Diablo 3. The story isn't original but it's engaging. As to gameplay, it's almost the same game as Diablo 2, minus the skills system which I personally prefer. The only thing that bothers me is the random stats on gear producing an abundance of throw-away items, which is fine on blues but shouldn't really happen on rares or legendaries, particularly class specifics. It seems as though most items are meant to go to the Smith for crafting mats, I'd rather this was a more difficult choice where gear was auctionable or worth keeping for other characters. My only other major complaint its the AH, where pattern and artisan training searches in particular appear to be broken, but I'm confident that longer term this will be resolved. In all, an addictive game and a solid successor to a game that was always built around epic gear lust with fun but shallow actual gameplay. Expand

I was pleasantly surprised. It still has some issues, like in order to fix the horrible economy they basically destroyed trading(in that all the highest tier items are pretty much account bound), but the fact that you'll actually find items worth using makes that a whole lot less painful than you would think, and it's definitely better than that awful auction/trading house mess that they had at release. As of 2.0.1 it is good enough that I spent money on their over priced expansion pack, and I honestly was planning on never giving Blizzard another dime, ever again. Expand

There is no arena pvp yet, so I don't see why people are mad saying there is only arena pvp. It hasn't been implemented yet. Now on to the review.

    The good:
    - Decent voice acting
    - Scoundrel has some hillarious conversations when talking to other people
    - Amazing CGI cut scenes
    - You can pretty much use all your skills even when you are 60. I remember back in Diablo 2, you would never use the skill you got early on when you hit 99 or even 20.
    - Some challenging battles (challenging vs cheap)
    - Easy to play gameplay so it opens up the series to beginners and advance players alike. The learning curve isn't bad, but with runes and such, advance players can have fun trying out new play styles.
    - Loot!

    The Bad
    - ONLINE DRM (horrible idea and as I see it as a disservice to customers. If I'm expected to play single player, but always have a internet connection, then I expect Blizzard to always have servers ready for the high payload of customers logging in. To this date they have had some issues of logins (for example yesterday I received the infamous error 37 again).

    - Only 4 people can play together in a party together vs 8. Hell, at LEAST make it 5 people since there are 5 classes.

    - Story is a bit cliché. Not to ruin it for anyone (and don't read any further if you REALLY don't want a hint about the story) but remember how Starcraft had Kerrigan and Warcraft had Arthas? Not exactly like that, but similar in some ways.

    - Magic find % seems useless at times. Now I know it's random, but I had 125% magic find with no rare drops in 2 hours of playtime on Hell mode. My friend had 9% and got about 10 rare items. Again I know it is random, but it has happened on many occasions. Interesting thing is, when you play a lower difficulty or do a second run through again on the same difficulty, rare items seem to drop more.

    - There's a difference when a game is challenging and just plain cheap. Some parts of hell are fun, but there are others when an blue mob has both freezing and desecration ability and freezes you in place, then burns you down while frozen with their desecration move and on top of that they can teleport and shoot 5 arcane sentry laser to burn you further while you are frozen. - No more spamming heal pots! That's what made grinding fun back in D2, you can carry a stack of potions and it made it intense fight. Versus waiting 30 secs or something like that. Blizzard should at least shorten the cool down time or remove it.

    - Blizzard nerfs. Sad to say, but I feel as PVP comes out, they will start nerfing classes even more to the point where classes become useless in PVE. Hopefully (and a BIG hope at that) PVP will have their own sets of class "nerfs" to balance issues, but PVE will be untouched (or at least make classes useful for PVE'ing). FYI I have a Monk and I feel they are the Death Knights of being nerfed constantly.

    Finals thoughts:
While this game is fun, it doesn't deserve a perfect a review. The very fact that Blizzard has taken out content that was suppose to be in the game doesn't help. Yes I know they plan on perfecting it (which I am a fan of when companies sincerely want to improve something), but I find it hard to believe it took them 10+ years to still perfect a game. Heck even 4 years since they debuted the Barbarian gameplay. IMHO, I strongly feel Blizzard is trying to milk out the game as long as possible by bits and parts of the game that should've been ready to go from the start (pets, pvp, enchanting, etc). Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game to play with friends and family, however it's far from being a perfect and polished game that doesn't warrant the 10+ years of waiting.

What most people enjoy in this game is online, so let me have my single player when i'm in bed and can't connect. In this day and age, this sort of drm is unacceptable. With that out of the way, what you find in this game is a promising albeit far too linear game. In such a deep dungeon crawler, the simplified stat system just isn't right. Maybe for less experienced players, but for all, just no. Also, the way i'm spoon fed quests, makes me feel like there isnt much else to do in this game, theres occasional optional dungeons, but the rewards in there are mediocre at best. At least the deepish combat redeems the games flaws and playing never feels like a chore, i'm challenged even on normal. Music and sound are great and the soundtrack always feels right. I can see how some dont like the graphics but they're satisfactory in my opinion. And finally, the story is there, but i dont particularly care about it, it's not all that engaging. In Closing:
The anticipated diablo 3 is a good game, but has an abundance of flaws for Blizzard to fix. If they can fix the character customization and stat assignments, along with further expansions making the game feel more open, they'll have a much better game on their hands, remember internet, it's been out for 2 weeks. **** will be fixed.
The Verdict: Unless you MUST play this game, download the cheaper Torchlight 2 and wait for Diablo to get a few more patches(i hope these patches will fix stuff) or maybe an expansion.

Diablo 3 is an excellent game. However the game has some terrible design choices. For one, the auction house ruins the balance. In PVP, I really hope you cannot use items purchased in the AH, if that's the case, then PVP is completely futile, and utterly stupid. Anyone can spend cash on gold, or even cash in the real-world currency AH, buy all the gear they want and then go "pwn sum nubs" with their elite gear that they just bought from someone who spent hours to find it. Another dissapointment is the completely ridiculous, unoriginal pile of trash that they call a story. Who wrote the story for this game? Were they drunk? Were they dropped on their head as a child!? The story is so mediocre that I can't even describe in words the mediocrity of the depth and lack of any actual interesting aspect within D3's plot. Towards the end it gets interesting, but just for a few moments, then it goes back to being an uninspired joke. The cinematics are epic, but way too short. I really think that Blizzard could have done better wtih both the story and cinematics. Diablo 2 had much better cutscenes, and the fight scenes within D3's are very short and uninteresting. Very disappointing Blizz, Starcraft 2 had better cutscenes than this, so why couldn't you do D3's with the same energy that you put into SC2's!? Now, the ranting is over. On to the good. Diablo 3 has a unique and interesting skill system. The game is designed to be unique to each individual, and that their is no supreme, or most-optimal build. This is true, and Blizz designed the skill system well. The game now relies more on skill rather than what website you copied your build from. I am impressed by the rune system and the sheer amount of variety you can have toying with your character's abilities. One thing that I love about Diablo 3, is the art style. Yes it is mildly cartoony, and I am aware of the seemingly WoW inspired graphics, but the environments look awesome, enemies are great to look at, and the backdrops are interesting. Another problem I have in this game, is the ridiculous character design. The Witch Doctor looks fine, so does the Barbarian, but a few of the others are bizarre and almost out of place. The female monk looks like a white Halle Berry, the male Wizard looks like he just stepped out of a Japanese anime and the male Demon Hunter looks like a teenaged junkie. In conclusion Diablo 3 is an excellent game, even if you must suffer through digital communism, er, I mean Blizzard's DRM via Batle.net. I give D3 a 7.5/10. Pros: Addictive gameplay, great skill system, varied enemy variety and interesting artstyle Cons: DRM, auction house DESTROYS balance, short and non-epic cutscenes, terrible story that lacks both imagination and originality Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've played 100+ hours of this game on Hardcore mode. Leveled each class to at least 30+ (except Wizard).

Here is a pro and con list that I've compiled:

    Pros

    1. Skills and runes are varied.

    2. The affixes for monsters are cool and interesting.

    3. Hardcore mode was included.

    4. The sound bites of lore.

    5. Achievements. 6. The banner that you can customize.

    7. Armor dye.

    8. More gem grades (more than D2).

    9. Cool cinematics.

    Cons

    1. A lot of the skills and runes seem worthless compared to others.

    2. Players can receive credit and quest experience while sitting in town.

    3. The checkpoint system is easily exploited. For instance, players can repeatedly farm the same rare monster pack if it's subsequent to a checkpoint.

    4. The art direction is a little too over-the-top. In other words, too WoWish, with the big hands, shoulders, etc. I'd prefer it if Diablo 3 were a little more bleak and realistic looking. The monsters in this game look evil, but they're evil in a silly over-the-top way, not in a "holy #&#@ that thing is actually scary" kind of way.

    5. The story is juvenile as well as predictable.

    6. The voice acting is too over-the-top and the lines are, again, juvenile. Not all of it, but a good portion. For example, "You will never defeat me! Rawr!" - Skeleton King. Come on now. The Skeleton King in the original Diablo was much more intimidating and scary.

    7. Game is too short. In an age where games like Skyrim exist, this is unacceptable.

    8. The music is forgettable, and the way it is blared in the cinematics is annoying. The only song I liked was the reimagined Tristram theme in the first act.

    9. Followers can't be used in multiplayer games.

    10. A lot of times, there are too many effects, monsters and stuff on the screen all at once in multiplayer games.

    11. Itemization in its entirety is less interesting and simpler in D3 than D2. "I'm a Witch Doctor; therefore, I concentrate on intelligence (DPS) and vitality, derp. All done." And the items are equally uninteresting. Then there are the horrendous drops. Does Magic Find even work? Finally, legendaries seem too rare and are not powerful enough.

    12. Wizards running around with two handed axes and Barbarians with daggers. In other words, classes, for the most part, do not restrict which items you can or cannot use.

    13. Male wizard looks like a pansy while the female wizard looks fine.

    14. No way to search for players to look at their items, achievements, and characters. You can only look at the profiles of players who you've recently played with--or your friend's. 15. The time it takes to get to 60 is too short. 16. No PKing. And by PK, I mean actual PKing, not World of Warcraft battlegrounds and Arena (but as of now we don't even have that). 17. Matchmaking as opposed to a readily available list of public games where you can select exactly which game you want to join like in D2. 18. Having to listen to the same lines of dialogue and play through the same story events over and over again even though you're at the point where you've experienced it all before and is now only interested in leveling and itemization. 19. The servers are too unstable for a game that is online only. 20. Feminine-looking Diablo. Why did they do this? I don't know, but it looks stupid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Good:
Diablo III has the formula that made it's predecessors work down to an art-form. The story, while not particularly deep, is a great monster-slaying setup with stunning cutscenes and story elements. The gameplay is addictive and intuitive, offering many choices on builds for characters and the ability to swap skills/powers in and out on the fly is a welcome feature. The visuals and soundtrack are equally great, continuing to bring the dark, medieval fantasy setting of the Diablo universe alive and keeping it dark and foreboding in tone. The game length is just long enough, neither being too long or too short... especially since the game kind of dictates multiple play throughs. The multiplayer is well-implemented, the fact that you can choose to play with friends or in public games makes it the game much more private and fun than that of an MMORPG, but at the same time keeps the kind of feel of being part of a community.

    The Bad:
The item drops are way too random and the 'magic find' trait is misleading in it's function. Items you need or want won't drop unless you spend several hours, maybe even days, 'farming' for them and, more often than not, 90% of the item drops you do get will be fodder for salvage or straight-up selling. The blacksmith's item creation is also too random often requiring mass amounts of gold, resources and several costly tries to produce an item of any kind of use, which seems unfair after all the gold and resources you already dump into him to level him up in order to make him capable of making certain level items... not to mention the items he creates can only be sold for any kind of profit on the Auction House, which is hit or miss. Skills, while varied in their styles and powers, are only a masquerade. Several classes have what could be awesome abilities, but after Act I, Normal difficulty, these powers lose any and all usefulness. The class' all seem to have one or two skill/rune set combos that are the best, rendering all the other abilities obsolete, which only gets worse the higher level the character gets. This creates the illusion of customization, but it's a wolf in sheep's clothing. Multiplayer, while fun, is required on higher difficulties, which sucks some of the fun out of it. Personally, I'd like to be able to go through the game by myself on any difficulty. Cramming multiplayer down my throat is an unwanted feature.

    The Ugly:
This new fad games are trying to use of only allowing players to play if they're online, even for single player, seems to be unnecessary. The Auction House, while a cool idea and useful, is a cop out, but at the same time you'll find that you have to use it in order to get your character up to a level in which he/she can survive... especially on higher difficulties.

    Overall:
It's beautiful and keeps things simple and in the vein of previous Diablos making it accessible to old and newcomers alike. The random item drop seems way off kilter, not giving you what you need to progress and forcing you to spend oodles of gold (or even real money) in the Auction House to get 'caught up'. The skills have enormous unrealized potential by only picking a few of the 'best' skills and making those the best build options and not allowing equal optimization with all the powers.

Unlike Diablo 2, areas have preset generators, so it isn't random whatsoever, and many of the areas are simply recolors. The story the first time told was very interesting, but after I played through it a few times the story became more clear, and noticed that it wasn't that good at all. The story wasn't told very well and was hard to understand the first time through, many things they were talking about I had no clue about. The journals are very frustrating due to not being account-based (only have to get them once). This makes it annoying to close each one you pick up, and having to find them for each character you make. There should be an option to turn it off, along with the entire lore, so we don't have to spam escape to skip each scene. One last issue with the game is the grind - it feels like it is gold you are farming for when it should be items, and once you beat Inferno there's nothing else to work for. It just feels like it lacks so much, and we can only hope they fix these issues in the future. I've played around 300 hours on this game and experienced everything it has to offer plus more. I enjoy the game, but it barely deserves what I gave it. It is around a 6.5 to be honest. I believe if it had offline play, and many improvements to the other areas listed it could earn an easy 9. Does it kill the games fun? In my opinion, no. Because the limitation will breed more creativity in character builds. Many people will disagree with that but this game is still incredibly young and as patches continue to roll out the balance will become more apparent. I have to say that the reliance on gear as opposed to player skill and character skill is pretty annoying because I get the sneaking feeling that this is being used to push the RMAH. The game is very good, not great. I'm hoping that as future patches roll out the game gets better and better and Blizzard doesn't disappoint. Expand

I don't know why the developers chose to go in that direction, since D3 has no subscription fee. In my opinion, it would have been better to let every players easily acquire awesome loot and plow through Inferno easily than forcing them to grind countless hours in gold and/or gear farming. When you get in the Inferno difficulty, the game changes from being a leisure to being a chore. Almost every problems Blizzard had with illegal activities (bots, etc) resulted in patches that punished the legit players more than the botters. The always-on DRM was supposed to solve many problems, but ended up being a pain more than a solution.

I estimate my enjoyment and experience value of the D3 product to 40$, maximum. In the future, I will be wary of acquiring another Blizzard product, as it will take good convincing from both reviews and friends before considering purchase.

The randomly generated dungeons do little to add to the replay of the game as the short scripted events remain constant throughout all playthroughs and the obstacles or randomly generated mobs differ little throughout all four acts. The story itself is standard gaming fare. It doesn't try to redefine the genre and I don't really feel it has too. The classic good vs evil tone and predictable character turns are a staple for this genre and there's just something fun about the melodramatic tones throughout the story.

The difficulty level is a little low for those who just want to playthrough the story once and move on. When set to normal the game will only take a day to see from start to finish and while newbies may die from time to time you never really get to a point where anything seems impossible. Seasoned veterans of the genre will laugh as they make it to the end. The real difficulty actual comes from rare spawns on later difficulties who may leave you frustrated from to time as they seem to have the perfect combination for nullifying a particular classes strengths. So why is Diablo getting a seven from me? The game is polished and I personally enjoy the classic art style. As shallow as the game maybe, I also found myself inexplicably spending hours playing through the different difficulties while attempting to upgrade my character and keep up with my friends. I'd actually say the game warrants closer to a 6.5 but for the sake of bumping up the overall score that I feel is far too low for the effort put into the title I feel a 7 is more than fair compared to say a 6. Finally I feel the need to restate that everything about the game is done server side. This means the game requires a constant connection and uses quite a bit of data compared to other titles. I found the game actually used more data than WoW overall and this should be considered by all gamers who live in areas where bandwidth caps are a concern. It's not going to push you over your cap on its own but all know little things like this add up and a couple hundred mbs for a multiple hour sitting is a lot to swallow.

What makes me wonder the most is why does Diablo II have a much higher rating? D3 is really the same game as D2, just newer. It has new graphics and content, but all the main features, weaknesses and strengths did not change at all.

Many people poured 100's of hours into this game, yet still claim it deserves a 0/10. This does not make sense. I ask, how many games in your life have you put 300+ hours in, and of those games, how many of those games could you say sucked? If you answered anything greater than 0, congratulations, you are an idiot. You could have stopped at any time.
Diablo 3 is a well polished game that had many balance issues.

Most gamers complained D3 was too hard at release. The game was actually made too easy. I exclusively played Hardcore and did not have any troubles through Inferno. When I hit A1 inferno, I then made a SC char and was able to make it to A3 Inferno in a week before hitting a wall (first patch, after obviously glitches were taken care of). The developers intended to make Inferno hard, and everything "worked as intended," although that's not what the average gamer wanted. It was supposed to take a month for the first person to to clear Inferno, instead it took like a week. Blizzard has since fixed this to make Inferno a cake walk, even at higher Monster Levels.

The game is dumbed down. There is little character customization, even in the equipment. As we all know, you stack Vit, All Res, Crit, and Primary stat. This "formulization," where there is always an ideal way to max your DPS or survivability is well known, and another poor quality of the game. However, this was primarily an end-game issue when your gear is set so you can conquer Inferno at higher ML. During the initial playthrough, there is tons of (cheap) gear you can use to hack through the monsters, and there were new skills to try out instead of a specific build. RMAH is broken. This is probably the most damning thing of the game. RMAH opens up Blizzard for lawsuits, encourages chinese gold farming and "Pay to win" mentality. It also hinders Blizzard from making great updates (How will an (idiot) player feel who spent $1000's to get gear which becomes obsolete?). Trading should have worked without RMAH.

TLDR: The game gave 100's of hours of fun before getting old, and predictable with a crap endgame. It is also dumbed down. Blizzard has and will put out patches that improve the game dramatically, and you will find yourself coming back to this game in years to come.

What could very well be the single most disappointing release in video gaming history, Diablo 3 proves to be a knife twist in the heart for many Diablo fans while simultaneously still managing to stand tall among other action role playing games.

The game's strengths, and more so weaknesses, revolve around both the game's simplicity and the massively multiplayer driven auction house. Where many ARPG's go for a talent tree, or a similar point allotment system, Diablo 3 eliminates that in favor for a small swappable hotkey palette (total of six skills at a time), each skill in turn capable of being upgraded with a single rune out of a choice of 5 that are unlocked gradually as you level. Finally this is capped with three passive skills that are chose from a list of about fifteen.
While this may seem like an impressively diverse system, most skills and runes are either too bad to be used or too good to be overlooked, and the lack of synergy between skills and runes means that skills will mostly be picked for standalone power over build viability.

The game also requires an online connection in order to prevent item duping, which can lead to death issues due to lag or disconnection making hardcore mode very unappealing. The auction house also tends to be required in order to find gear upgrades due to the sheer absurd rarity of finding a well rolled item. This issue may possibly be resolved in the next expansion, where developers are suggesting that bind on account gear will be more competitive.

While combat mechanics are fairly solid and graphics impressive although not terribly moody, the game falls short with very standard AAA production audio, dull and repetitive enemies, and a surprisingly bad storyline given the game's history and the resources available to the developers. What's more the game seems to revolve around farming loot, as if that aspect alone is what makes a dungeon crawler appealing. Worst of all, perhaps, are the grotesquely skewed attributes in the game, with some stats being godly powerful and others being utterly useless resulting in most items being lackluster to any given player.

Bad itemization is further marred by the fact that only survivability (health, all resist, and life steal) and DPS stats (weapon damage, primary stat, crit, crit damage, attack speed) are the only desirable stats for any given player, meaning that, aside from primary stat and class unique items, everyone gears the exact same regardless of class and build. Essentially the game simplifies things down to how far you can push your DPS without getting instantly killed by enemies, which is eerily similar to the how damage dealers operate in Blizzard's other blockbuster game World of Warcraft.
Creative tactics and unusual builds, thus, fall to the wayside as the game appears to be attempting to simplify what constitutes a gear upgrade, pushing for player power to manifest in the form of 'farming as quickly as possible'. Avoiding mechanics becomes pointless (it's not very possible most of the time anyway) once a character's DPS And life steal can out heal anything thrown at them, provided their health and damage resistance stats are high enough to be prevent dieing in a fraction of a second. The usefulness of most items, thus, can be ascertained with a mere glance rather than a hearty comparison.

Overall Diablo 3 is not a bad game by any stretch, but simply cannot stand up to the overall quality and replay value demanded of it, or even its own predecessors. The arguably overly simplistic design and scope also leaves the game with an unpleasant aftertaste that smacks too much of a well polished 'baby's first dungeon crawler'. It's worth playing, but simply doesn't offer anything new or exciting to the genre.

7/10 a solid ARPG, better than most, but nothing too special and severely hurt by tripping over it's own poorly executed loot and hero customization philosophies. Required online play is also a slap to the face.

A lot of the mistakes with this game have been fixed. Some are still outstanding however. The foremost of these is the draconic use of DRM. Not being able to play even single player durning server maintenance is beyond stupid.

I've now played all 3 diablo games and I rate the ps3 version of D3 behind D2 but still very enjoyable. I doubt I'll still be playing it 2 years from now like D2, but I'm sure I'll get my money's worth with this game.

Treasure - Diablo's all about treasure hunting for me looking for the final item of a set, a new weapon for one of your chars, etc.
Battle - This version retains the "arcadeyness" of previous versions with no camera control - isometric view. On the ps3, this frees-up the left joystick for evasive maneuvers which make the battle feel of D3 the best so far.

    What they Did wrong:
Dumbed-down-to-one - Nearly all strategy has been taken out of the game. There are no decisions in character building making every character the same. Once you level a monk (for instance) to level 60, there's no need to play another, you'll just have another maxed-out copy of the first--maybe with slightly different gear. In the D2 days you had to decide where to spend your points and your decisions had a direct effect on the potency of the leveled character. I miss this. If there was a subtitle to this game it should be "Diablo for Dummies".

No more runes - In D3 you have only gems to put in your socketed equipment. Just 4 choices--topaz, emerald, amethyst, and ruby. Boooo!

All and all I'm having a great time vanquishing scores of demons and scooping up madd loot.
I've reached Paragon in hardcore (after a few failed attempts) and suspect I'll be jamming this game for a few more months until I "switch gears" to concentrate on GTA V (which is waiting on the shelf).

I played this game after the release. The gameplay on the very first run was really addictive. But playing the same runs over and over every time on a more difficult level gets really boring. Another negative point was the in game market. You could buy stuff with real money. So trying to get great gear ingame wasnt rewarding at all. Spending a few bucks was way easier.

Graphics - quite nice, run on a fine engine, it took some time for me to accept a bit less climatic enviroments and a bit uninspired settings but overall strong 7/10.
Audio - sounds/voice acting are top notch (10/10) but music is waaay worse than the first diablo (id give it 1/10 - cant remember even one theme). So id be 6/10.
And finally lets get to gameplay - its way more dynamic, than previous settlements but its also dumbed down. No matter how hard blizzard tries to change ballance, You alway search for items witch 1-2 specific bonuses (like attack speed, critical hit chance/damage). ITS JUST BORING. In previous DIABLO You had way more options to build Your characters, now You must do it this one specific way or Your avatar will just suck compared to the ones using "best build". Its just plain bad concept. The problem is, this was made to cash in from auction house which was fine option but now it is removed so we got really broken product.
To sum things up: gameplay is quite addicting but overall You fell like playing unfinished product and for that it misses perfect score by a mile.
VERDICT: Good game, but it seems after years of draining cash from WOW fans Blizzard lost its touch. 7/10

But ... 5 minutes ago I was playing a Great Rift and I just had my session disconnected in it's last seconds, meaning that for the 20th time I've lost my progression, my exp bonus pool streak, and a Great Rift keystone. That makes me want to give it a 0 score.

This introduction pretty much sums up my experience with this game and how it can be extremely frustrating at times, but can be enjoyable as well.

    Pros:
    - Super modern gameplay. Some may argue but I think Blizzard makes the most smart combat systems on the market. And Diablo is probably the best of them. The gameplay is fast, and brutal. There's many builds to choose from in many classes and they finally are getting them to decent balance. This is definitely the strongest point of this game.

    - Also, after many patches and updates, Blizzard finally found a enjoyable endgame mechanic. You play bounties to farm gear and craft materials. You play Rifts for Greater Rift keys also gear farm. And you play Greater Rift's to test your character progression and compare them to other players through Leaderboards and also to Level Up the almost infinite Paragon Levels. It's a funny cycle that can be tiresome after so many hours, but I've been playing this game a lot in this 5th Season. It's a sign that it is getting better and better. Somehow the gears feels easier to farm, I got the sets for my character build much faster then ever before so I could try all of them and choose what to use. In previous seasons It took me a lot more time and I got tired even before I could complete a decent set.

    Cons
    - The story is horrible and terribly cheesy. The only character worth mentioning is the Scoundrel;
    - The art style is nice but I think it's too colorful for a game about demons. I wish the atmosphere were darker.

    - I know it adds to the gameplay lifecycle, but I wish the game wouldn't depend on RNG so much. It's OK to have space to different item and affixes rolls but I'm sure they could've coded a smarter way to make it less frustrating. Today, to find an usable item you have to hope for a legendary, then hope for it to be the kind you need (set), then hope for 5 out of 6 affixes to be what you need, then hope to all affixes to roll good numbers, and then hope for the item to be Ancient, because regular items are useless (especially now that you can only enhance Ancient items with Caldean Cube). That's a lot of hope for a single item. Now multiply that for 13 pieces of equipment. Now you know why the endgame of this game is infinite. You'll can play this game for the rest of your life and you probably won't ever see a perfect item.

    - Sometimes the rotation of random maps in rifts are pretty annoying. I know this should be RNG doing, but have this feeling that the game favors stupid Act 5 maps. I almost never see other maps that I like. It could be my imagination, but I've been playing a lot and I rarely see those Act 1 or 2 big open areas.

    - The endgame EXP grinding was designed to be performed in groups, but playing in group can be a pain for people too far away from each other, because internet connection. That forces you to play with a limited number of people. Not to mention I like to play by myself. But that's out of the question if I want to be on the Leaderboards. This is bad design. They should separate the Paragon you acquire in group from the solo Leaderboard Great Rifts. I'm not sure how, I'm not a game designer, but the clear focus on group play is broken.

    - Which brings me to the worst of all mistakes in Diablo 3: the online aspect. As I mentioned by the start of this review, I get disconnected a lot in this game for no reason, and I often loose precious progression. This is frustrating beyond words. I would never touch a Hardcore character in a game this broken and that makes me forsake a lot of content too (many achievements are Hardcore only and sometimes they unlock goods).

To the credit of all the people crushing this game with negative votes, they have a point if you're a fan of D1 & D2.

That being said, this game by itself, without thinking about its forefathers and the style of play they brought to the table, it's not a bad game to play with a bunch of friends that you want to just beat mobs up with and raid dungeons for the #loots. People tend to get on a bandwagon for only one line of thought when it comes to these types of games. The older generation of gamers that played Diablo in the 90s are definitely entitled to ask Blizzard why they would deviate from the recipe of what makes Diablo what it is, but Diablo 3 takes a different turn that players can still enjoy.

I say all this because I don't want people to jump on Metacritic and immediately throw away the thought of getting the game altogether. If I'm to be perfectly honest, I wasn't around to appreciate D1. I was there for a little bit of D2, but when D3 came out, only my older cousins who were diehard Diablo fans had sh*t to talk. I enjoyed and still enjoy to play with my friends in cooperative kickassery of the demon population in whatever randomized dungeon we may encounter on whatever difficulty we may play in however many ways we get royally f*cked and make no mistake, this game can kick your @$$ if you don't know what you're doing. But regardless of what you may see on here, there is still potential for fun to be had regardless of the lack of respect for past games.

All I'm asking you, reader, is to try the game out for free yourself and see what you think. Don't let your mind be clouded by the reviews made by the previous generation. You can still play Diablo for 3 up until level 15 for free with the Starter Edition if I'm correct and you can experience a bit of the game yourself. If you don't like it, no one would blame you. But I urge you not to jump on the bandwagon of reviews that are based on OTHER games and not this one without having had the chance to try it yourself.

    Personal Rating: 7/10

    Pros:
Lots of fun with friends (if you don't have a Debbie Downer who's nostalgic about D1 & D2)
    Dungeons are pretty well randomized
    #madlootz
Story is a little predictable but still enjoyable (It's about the eternal conflict of Angels and Demons, 90s gamers, I don't know why you want your mind blown. It's an epic not Inception.)
Higher difficulty levels bring loads of challenge to less skilled players

    Cons:
If you're nostalgic, chances are you won't like it
Character customization can be a little linear and it can be easy to pick out the best abilities
Not really an RPG it's a Hack 'n Slash
    Online play is required
You could be spending your time playing other games

Look at the date of the negative reviews. This game certainly had issues when it launched, but with the expansion and a ton of patches with new content the game has actually become quite good. 6 different unique classes to play with, tons of cool gear that changes how abilities work, and much more end game content made Diablo 3 able to take the number 1 spot as the worlds best farming simulator.

    Classic hack'n slash, beautifully crafted.

Building a character is still fun with tons of items and special skills.

Although some sub-levels repeats itself (especially what's underground) and the difficulty is not that hard in hard mode, this is classic title that defines its category, with great atmosphere packed with non stop actions.

Bosses are amazingly epic, huge and can be truly challenging. There are a lot of varied runes allowing you to craft different types of characters depending on which one you chose. It is truly funny to discover the skills and techniques of your character while playing, and the feeling of progression is awesome. The fact that you can choose the level of difficutly (and change it) is great as it forces you to try to play differently and sometimes out of your comfort zone.

Unfortunately 'Diablo III' also shows terrible flaws like its loot and inventory systems, the mechanics of limited-by-level weapons, a quite short story mode, its intense repetitiveness and linear levels, its lack of customization, the necessity to be connected even to play in solo mode, some bugs and crashes, the lack of charisma of the character you play, the stupidity of some NPC during this overwhelming apocalypse, its high price and the price of add-on's, etc.

Yet it has an impressive amount of flaws but to be fair this game still remains playable and even enjoybale if you give it an honest try.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good game but going in the wrong direction.

I waited impatiently for Diablo III to come out, back in 2012, and when it did, I was the first to buy it. Never was I more hyped for a sequel than this one.

Right away, I was hooked up and played many hours in a row and almost finished it in one setting.

The story goes on where Diablo II ended and it follows the plot really well. Diablo has broken free from the Soulstone with the help of his Demon Lord buddies and roams the earth again. You need to stop him once again to save humanity and need to fight your way through all his minions and luitenants. It is kind of the same story as Diablo II but for this series, that is perfectly fine.

You visit the old, destroyed town of Tristram, come across characters and lore from the previous games and meet some new and original NPC’s. You roam the desserts, the cold plains of Bastion Keep and visit heaven itself.

The newly added characters, like the Witch Doctor, Monk and Demon Hunter and all great and every character is balanced. I could not find problems with any of them being more overpowered than the other. My personal favorite will always be the With Doctor. Raising zombies and attacking with foul voodoo is just so satisfying.

Diablo III is a big game and offers much content for moneys worth. It also has many improved features from the previous installments, like more inventory space, a re-loadable health potion and a town portal that you can always use, instead of a big bible in your inventory that stores town portals.
The game controls fluently and you are in total control of the situation.

Although I enjoyed the game and played the crap out of it, I have some personal complaints about Diablo III.

First of all, the game feels a little too cartoonish and the dark, grim atmosphere from the first two installments is not present. This is mainly because of the 3D graphics of course, but it is just to colorful and bright in my opinion.

Secondly, the introduction of the Auction House back in the day, almost broke the game for me. People could buy and sell ridiculously powerful items and blast their way to the game without any effort. And worst of all, you paid real money for it. The game became a business model and people became gambling addicts. It was even worse than the loot box system in many other games and it made me very sad. Luckily, this feature has been removed because of the many complaints but it is worth noting. If people did not complain, this would have gone on forever. And because Blizzard is doing the same scam these days for Diablo Immortal (which is already banned in my country because of this), I wanted to point it out.

Lastly, Diablo III has become a mindless game where the only thing that matters, is how fast you can complete a “greater rift”. It is starting to look a lot like League of Legends, in terms of doing the same thing over and over again and try to be the fastest. People must do what they like of course, but for me, the whole magic of Diablo, like experienced at the start of this game is dead. The story does not matter anymore and the game got too commercial, if that makes any sense. The seasons, greater rifts and events are cool, but also makes you feel that you can never complete this game.

Still, I get it. The game needs to stay interesting to keep people playing so the developers need to make some changes in order to achieve this.

But enough complaining. I play greater rifts too and participate in the seasons, but only because of the nice rewards you get from them and to build a new character, and making him stronger than the previous one. And although this is still enjoyable, many times I forget that I’m playing Diablo.

Overall, Diablo III is a good game and although nobody gives a crap anymore, it follows Diablo 1 and 2 quite well and has a ton of content, regular updating and new features. In my opinion it is somewhat targeted at “the next generation”, who did not experience the previous games back in the day, but now I’m starting to sound like a grandpa and I am not even 30 yet.

I already saw the trailers for Diablo IV and it looks like they go back to the roots of Diablo II with darker graphics and a nice story. Cannot wait to try it when it comes out.

Still recommend Diablo III it for its fluent mechanics, fast paced gameplay and its content for the buck.

Cute for a weekend when a new season comes out, but they didn't even try to match the basic end game systems PoE has so there's not much to do after you finish a character. I'm not gonna grind forever for perfect rolls on my gear since they're just 1s and 0s in a game.

The good parts of the game involve combining unlocked skills in different ways to dramatically alter how you approach combat and getting together with 3 other people to cause absolute chaos on the battlefield. I've played 70+ hours, but I think it's time to take a break until Blizzard balances the game.

First of all the skill tree does not allow for a great deal of customization and when leveling up we don't even get to choose which skill we want to unlock, it's already determined. Also we no longer get to spend attribute points, they increase automatically as we level up. Personally if there is one mechanic I like about RPGs is deciding where I spend my points. The story is not really engaging and the campaign is quite short, I know that this game is designed to be played more than once to unlock every skills and runes but I think the campaign could have been a little longer for those of us who enjoy storytelling. I am not going to comment about connection issues as this is something that Blizzard will fix soon no doubt.
Another thing that is a little strange to me is the damage system, the base damage of a weapon will increase your overall damage. I can understand this makes sense for the barbarian but for a wizard it seems bizarre to run around with a mace and a shield to increase spell damage and protection. In most RPGs caster are inefficient with melee weapons and shields and it makes sense like that.
This is still a very good game... but not awesome. Blizzard could have innovated a little bit more... it's not like they didn't have time! I really wish they would start taking more risks when developing a game, they have to get out of their comfort zone. With the money they are making they have to push innovation and stop sticking to what simply works.

The new classes are former shells of their predecessors. A wizard is a sorc with no mana pots, 15 sec cd on teleports, and goes oom after 3 spells. A WD is a necro without the useful pets and a fraction of the curses/utility. Where as a sorc could teleport all over the screen while raining destruction the wizard is as mobile as a rock and relying on your basic attack more than your good spells. Where as the necro could control an army, chain gun debuffs, fill a room with walls, etc... The WD is so heavily cd limited it's funny. 25 second cd on your wall, 60 seconds on confusion, 120 seconds on your big summons. All of the cool toys the necro had with no cd are still there, but are severely hamstrung by cd's. The only good thing that can be said is that the game is friendlier. Respecs, stash space, UI, etc... are all great improvements. Granted these are things that are mandatory in modern games and D2 is 10 odd years old. Overall it's disappointing, not even factoring in the horrible connection issues and online requirement.

Diablo III is both an entertaining game AND a huge let down. Yes, combat in the "heat of the moment" is enjoyable and frantic and managing to kill entire mobs of monsters causing them to explode in a red mist of gore is to be relished and yet ... See, compared to Diablo II, you get a lot of smallish improvements:
    - loot is properly shared now
    - you can craft (although auction house ruins it, see later)
    - you have checkpoints and more waypoints
    - you now have actions with cool down periods like in MMOs which add some depth to the combat
    - you can wreck scenery
    - the story is a little more fleshed out (although you'll just get bored of it after a little while - it's pretty dull and slow)

But then you have the massive problems which Diablo II didn't have:
    - maps are far less random and pretty much feel the same on every playthrough meaning they're less fun to replay
    - you no longer are able to equip two weapon sets for quick switching depending on monster immunities
    - the game needs you to be always online no matter what - and kicks you quite quickly if you go afk for a little while
    - levelling up is really dull now with zero choices to be made. The game has really become gear-dependant which is why I dislike WoW so much - instead of making a clever build that works well with your friends, everyone is the same minus gear and the choice of what attacks to use.

The absolutely BIGGEST flaw is the auction house, however. It completely ruins the point of the game because it's sooo much easier to just pick up gold and buy new gear than to play the game to get it. After 20 hours of playing, I collected a good 100.000 in gold yet barely had any decent armour. With a mere 10.000 gold, I got a really kick ass outfit including weapons which saw me wading through monsters as if they were butter. Honestly, the auction house shouldn't have this big an effect on the game yet it does. It also completely makes crafting pointless. Why spend 1500 gold on a weapon that may turn out to be crap if you can get a really good yellow item for a third of the price?

You have quite a few smaller problems too:
    - the music and atmosphere in general are far less effective - a sentiment which most Diablo II players share
    - the graphics are pretty dated and are too WoW-influenced nor do they convey the more gothic feel Diablo II used to have
    - there's less items to pick up and the fun of the horadrics cube is gone
    - etc. etc.

Honestly, this is a very very mediocre copy of Diablo II minus the great atmosphere minus the balance, minus the character choices, with an auction house that ruins the entire game's premise and basically ... it's a poor attempt at a sequel made by people who clearly don't have the slightest idea what made Diablo II so good. Considering most are ex-WoW staff members, why am I not surprised?

Diablo III is the best game ever made in its genre. Does this make it a great game? No. Why? Because it is repetitive as heck. But it is polished to a mirror shine it is the best in the genre. It is just that the genre sucks.

You will hear people whining about the always online thing. This is pretty much a non-issue. On launch day, things were rough, but since then, I've had a problem exactly once, which was hardly tragic I lost maybe three minutes of time. The converse of this the fact that you can play ANY of your characters with your friends more than makes up for the annoyance, and its really probably the only reasonable way to keep their marketplace intact.

What about the marketplace itself? You can ignore it if you don't like it, and if you do like it, it is there for your use, and it is easy, convenient, and sure.

What about the game itself? It is Diablo II, but better. It takes everything good about Diablo II, and tosses out everything bad about it the skill trees are gone, you can respec at any time, stat assignments are gone... basically all the stupid busywork which could make your character terrible are gone, and all the things that are fun are present and better. Every character is constantly using their skills, 100% of the time, and this makes for much more diversity in play, and you have many different sorts of attacks on all characters. Some people will nerd rage about losing choices, but let's face it you lost no choices at all. The skill trees existed soley as traps, as there were realistically only a few ways to play any character class, and if you wanted to try out a new skill, you lost that skill point forever, which sucked horribly and encouraged you to never diversify. The stat assignment worked out terribly as only one statistic actually mattered. Diablo III fixes these problems by letting you pick whatever skill from your class you want as long as you are high enough level to use it, and by getting rid of the stats (or rather, your ability to assign them), rather auto-assigning them in an optimal fashion, making the game actually work properly.

The only real bad thing about the game is the same problem that many action RPGs have the gameplay itself is rather tiresome. The really fun enemies only show up later on in the game, making act 1 feel like the act 1 of every other game you've ever played, and quite frankly, even the "really fun" enemies aren't that fun... which is pretty much par for the course for the genre.

There are better, funner games out there, but Diablo III does what it does well. Unfortunately, I just don't think this genre has any life in it anymore we've all played a ton of looters by this point. Do you really need to play one more?

If so, Diablo III might be for you. If not... well, I would recommend against it.

Despite the initial hiccups with the servers at launch, I'm very pleased with with the game and the overall experience with Diablo 3. To address one of the major issues; DRM is a relatively new and difficult pill to swallow for most gamers mostly because our games were never required to connect to a live service to play single player before. Well, the truth is a fair amount of gamers took advantage of the game (among others) when it was not run by DRM by hacking and pirating it. If things continue on that path, it not only hurts the end experience but also hinders business which ultimately affects game development. Gamers don't want to hear that... So, to sum the game itself up, this is a thorough Diablo 3 experience. Finding randomly generated loot, killing demons/bosses, upgrading armor and doing it all with friends has never been better. Skill trees are no longer but are replaced with your choice of a combination of defensive, offensive and special skills. This system still fosters a certain level of strategy based on the type of enemy you're fighting, the weapon you have equipped, the type of skills/magic you have hotkeyed , etc... The game does not have the gritty and dark aesthetic any more. Rather, it has a much richer color pallet similar to other recent Blizzard games but still manages to deliver the familiar ominous tone of doom and evil from the previous entries. In a nutshell, the experience has streamlined in certain areas and as a result has dampened the allure of Diablo 3 for some. Others are just irate about the infamous launch day "Error 37" etc... and are not actually rating the game itself even after those issues were essentially put to rest. Patience is a virtue, everyone. Have just a little with this game through the rocky start and minor gameplay changes and you may just find one glorious game. 10/10! (ignore that '6' :) ) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a Blizzard fan since they were making console games. It was a long time ago. I have seen over the time amazing game after amazing game come out from them. Until now. Don't get me wrong. Diablo 3 from a game play stand point is amazing. But thats were the good things end. Everything else is surprisingly average. The sound, the music, the voice acting, the graphics. All fail to impress in any way. There are glimmers of great in the sea of mediocrity but that doesn't make up for all the mess.

Speaking of a mess. The story is a disaster. It is so bad there is just no place to start. So i will just make a list of things it fails at: It fails:

    - at creating atmosphere
    - at creating scary villains
    - at making any kind of sense for the game
    - at making the player feel anything

So it pretty much fails across the board. All the things a story should do in a game context the Diablo 3 story doesn't do.

So what do we have in the end. A game with great game play, mediocre sound, music, voice acting and graphics and a story so bad it laughable. Buy it according to what matters to you in a game.

    Twelve years in the making, Diablo 3 should be providing the Gamer with buckets of entertainment and fun, but strangely, this isn't really the case. The game is quite fun for sure, but there's nothing new here, in fact it's just a walk down memory lane for most. Here's the problem;

    1. The constant need to be on Battlenet even in Single Player is just plain annoying. I really don't want to be online for a single player adventure, what is so hard to understand? The Server problems isn't a big deal to be honest, but the need for a constant internet connection to battlenet AND the server problems just highlights the stupidity in the design decision.
    2. The lack of customization at the character screen. Seriously? just dyes to change the color of your armor?
    3. The lack of customization of the skill trees makes all the character classes, 'feel' the same, plays the same. One would think that after twelve years in development, some thought would have gone into it.
    4. The User Interface is a little wanting. Certain elements like the mini-map and the quest log actually blocks and detracts from the overall fight and gaming mechanics. For Range classes, you're constantly clicking into your mini-map or having to walk a couple of steps around to move the screen just to see what you're hitting and aiming at.

What was supposedly a 10 star game is now without 4 stars and I can only give this a 6/10 effort. Probably good enough for Kotick and gang.

It is now terribly obvious that this marriage between Activision and Blizzard is no good, and it's high time for a divorce.

KillThis is a late review, but I think a late game deserves as much. In any event, I wanted to get it right. Diablo 3 is unlike any game Ive played before in that is succeeds so brilliantly in the little things, but fails so catastrophically at its core. The graphics of Diablo 3 are among the best, its a great hybrid between hand-drawn artwork and high-octane animations in great density. Kill animations are numerous and always feel satisfying, and the landscapes nail the dark fantasy feel. The cinematic are breath-taking. The audio is also great, with an insane number of audio cues between skills and monsters and events plus a good soundtrack never hurt anyone. The game is long and begs to be replayed numerous times which shows how powerful the character progression is. The story is far too terrible to be a driving force, its characters are all one-dimensional, and plot twists are few and predictable. The only thing I didnt predict was how little closure the ending would give. But everything I just mentioned is just a drop in the bucket, because Diablo 3 fails to be either a game or a work of art. The implementation of the video and audio only exist to enhance the gameplay and the story is virtually non-existent. Theres no deeper meaning hidden anywhere. The problem is that the game aspect of Diablo 3 is also built on a flawed foundation. Diablo 3s gameplay is built entirely on 2 pillars: skills and gear. Theres nothing else to it, and both pillars are undermined by their flaws. On the one hand, the skills in Diablo 3 are amazing - at first. Unlocking new runes and new skills opens worlds of possibilities, and theres nothing more fun than switching builds around trying different playstyles. The problem is that you can only do this for a limited time. As you progress through the game and unlock new skills, you will also move onto harder difficulties. In Diablo 3 you have NO CHOICE over what difficulty, not because the game doesnt allow you to choose, but because the difficulties dont scale to level. If your the kinda gamer who likes a normal difficulty, Youll enjoy nightmare the most. But the problem is that you cant start on nightmare, and you cant end on nightmare. Once you beat nightmare, playing again will never be the same because youve already leveled beyond it. Once you beat a difficulty, going back to it is simply too easy to be any fun, your forced to do the next difficulty because its only one thats remotely challenging and its the only one in which your character can progress, either in level or gear. The new difficulties are scaled to be more difficult however. Once you get to Hell difficulty (the 3rd if you dont know), Diablo 3 gets difficult, and sometimes its unecessarily difficult, and some people like that, others dont. Hell difficulty is when your favorite builds stop working, and your playstyles start to die off one by one because they simply arent good enough. If you go all the way through that, your capped out forever on inferno difficulty, in which nearly every player in the world is limited to only a select few cookie cutter builds. You know the billions of skill and rune combos you used to have so much fun with? Well they might as well be gone because experimentation outside the cookie cutter is dealt with sheer brutality by the later difficulties. Inferno is at many times difficult on an unfair level. But my level 60 cant play anything else because theres no other difficulty where I can progress or have any fun. I can choose between far too easy and far too difficult. This feeds into the next issue, because Diablo 3 is all about the gear. The people who can do inferno can do so because they have the gear that makes it possible. But theres 2 problems with the gear. For one, gear is generated on a heirarchical basis. First it generates the level, then the number of bonuses, then the scale of each bonus, and the odds continue to roll on an exponential level ranging from complete **** to godly. The gear that gets people through inferno isnt the 1 in a 1000 drop, its not even a 1 in 10,000 drop. Its a one in a million drop. But surely theres ways to increase my chances of finding magic items. 2 things, you can use items that boost magic find but at the expense of bonuses that you NEED to survive the areas that drop good items, and then you have to actually get to those areas. To get past Act I inferno, you need AcT II gear. To get past Act II, you need Act III gear. Between the odds of finding the gear you need and not being able to progress because you need gear from an area beyond you, most players are caught in a tragic end-game loop, a loop that destroys the essential criteria of fun. Diablo 3 is a game with a time limit, theres not fun endgame stuff to do like there is in WoW, its built so that your character caps out. Theres no power/difficulty plateau, it keeps getting harder until you cant progress. Farming can only delay the cap, but whats the point? Its not fun. It's bad design. Expand

After playing this for a while you could be forgiven for forgetting your playing Diablo 3 (not just for its lack of graphical enhancement) and think your playing the original, in fact I'm more a fan of it than this one. I give diablo 3 a 6/10 for the simple fact It did deliver on taking on the classic parts of the originals and screwing them up mixing the original click like hell style of diablo 1 with some semi-thought out skill selection of diablo 2. however with all the diablo 3 I have played its been an utterly disappointing game, shops don't have anything worth buying, you spend thousands on crafting items at the blacksmith that you rarely find elsewhere and for the most part the fighting consists of GRRRRRRRRRRRR LEFT MOUSE BUTTON!!! Most of us are acting on emotion while reviewing Diablo 3. We need to take in consideration that DRM is a bit like Politics. We hate it sometimes, but it's there for a reason. I play games off-line, I play single player. Sure, I spent quite a lot of time online as well, but I do not like being forced to play online. It's a matter of personal preference. We hate it sometimes, but it's there for a reason. I play games off-line, I play single player. Sure, I spent quite a lot of time online as well, but I do not like being forced to play online. It's a matter of personal preference. So, let me put it out of the way, Blizzard made a huge mistake with their online-only stance, but with their pedigree, I'm sure they will iron out the problems in due time. Now, on to the review of the actual game (error 37 not included).

Diablo 3 brings something new to the table for ARPGs. A complete reworking of the RPG part in your ARPG. When your character level up, the stats are applied automatically, and you unlock new abilities or runes which change how these abilities work. And since you can only use 1 ability of each tree (varies according to your class), you have usually 6 abilities at your disposal and a huge amount of combination that can change the type of character you are. For example, the Demon Hunter can be a beast when fighting swarm of enemies with one combination or a boss killer with another combination.

Graphics and Sounds are below average in my honest opinion. The music is not memorable, the combat sound is great, the graphics well it's decent but could have been better, and the combat animation just fail horribly. Animation varies according to your ability rather than which weapon is equipped. So don't be surprised to see a wizard wield a 2h sword like a golf club when casting spell. Also, it doesn't make any sense for a lot of characters to be able to use some weapons, when they don't even have the ability or animation to use them like the Monk.

Gameplay is amazing thanks to the revamped RPG system. Dungeons are grim (Act 1 had some of the best dungeons in the game), the world is beautifully designed though a bit small compared to the likes of Sacred 2 or Titan Quest. The boss fights are amazing; Act 2's end boss is just a runner up for one of the best boss battle in an ARPG. Loot are plentiful to find, and with a little bit of help from equipment with X% of finding magical items, you bet your gold coins you will pick up some wonderful things on a regular basis.

Now the story. First, let me say this. I don't like Leah. She looks like a little girl from an japanese cartoon or anime. Are you telling me that's the best character design blizzard could come up with for the woman that grew up with Deckard "Stay a while and Listen" Cain? Also, why is she not a be more, you know, badass having to live with that old man since her childhood? Tyrael is awesome, Adria is one milf, the side kicks are fun to have around except for that sorceress who suffers from innocent-flower-syndrome, and Lyndon is just too awesome for his mustache. Overall, the story doesn't let you down provided you pay attention to all the details so that you don't end up asking silly questions like "is Diablo a lady?".

To conclude, it's a good game. It has awful DRM. And probably deserves the 0 it's receiving, but it's unfair towards the people who designed this game to just rate down the game based on strong emotions. It's justified. We paid for a product, we expect to be able to use said product. But that said, think of the developers. They are not our enemies; corporate greed is.

Please keep in mind that I played the 5 classes, although none of them is lvl60, so this is a work-in-progress. Still I have a nice idea of the game now. For those who dont like big text, here's the thing to remember: DIABLO 3 IS FAR FROM EXCEPTIONAL, AND SUFFER SERIOUS SHORTCOMINGS, STILL IT'S A FUN GAME ESPECIALLY WITH FRIENDS.
+ each class has its own role and a few skills/equipment that make them distinctive.
    + aesthetics of the game.
+ works on any decent computer.
+ not just plain mouse-click bashing.
+ new skills system avoids losing hundred hours building a new character to test new strategy, allows to adapt skills depending on the team (and not the contrary).
    - the "hundreds skills per classe" is crap: at least half of them is useless.
    - permanent internet connection is still the WORST **** DRM EVER! Especially with Blizzard being so stupid: not anticipating Day one, updating servers on Sunday afternoon -I mean, Sunday freaking AFTERNOON!!!
    - several ergonomy flaws.
    - loot system broken by design, blatantly oriented to make people trade items at auction house.
    - difficulty curve stupidly steep. You go straight from utterly boring, 0-danger monster massacre to hard survival where you don't even count your lives anymore (much more interesting though, the "normal difficulty" should have been dropped).

    OTHER COMMENTS
Apart from connection problem, the two major flaw I see are:
    1) artificial variety of skills: In spite of so many skills on paper, only a handful will be actually useful. And, unless you play solo on higher difficulties (with monsters having immunities/special powers), you'll never have to change your set skill to win your game. In fact, you're encouraged to play like this, since you accumulate a hidden bonus of magic find which resets when you change active skills. Duh.
    2) loot system purposely broken to make you use Auction House: normal objects only sell a few golds (whatever their quality), magic items not much better, you rarely get an item for your class, stash is insanely expensive and limited. And still, monsters drop stuff by the hundreds, making you lose so much time checking items to pick up the good ones. 3) crafting system useless: the odds of making good items are not much better than your chances to find ones, you have no control whatsoever on generated magic properties, the number of times you can craft is limited, the investment in money is HUGE. Good idea, bad implementation.

    FIRST FEEDBACK
This is sad. I'd like to write a detailed review on this game, and give it a note that would reflect the actual fun potential. Unfortunately, I cannot bypass this outstanding behaviour from Blizzard. They are a VERY BIG editor, so it's not a money problem. They published several massively online multiplayer games already (Diablo 2, WoW, Starcraft 2), so it's not an experience problem. They made people play beta for many months, and made an extensive stress-test one month before actual planned release date; so it's not a preparation problem. BLIZZARD JUST PLAINLY DECIDED TO THROW AWAY USABILITY TO SAVE A FEW DOLLARS. So, here are dozen thousand people that pre-ordered or bought on day 0, for a hefty amount of dollars, and they can't even play. And, obviously, general user licence prevent them from having a legal cause for bringing Blizzard into court. I think I've found the problem here. Blizzard doesn't give a **** about his community/fans/users/clients. Only possible retaliation then is: DON'T BUY THIS GAME (yet)!!! ... SERIOUSLY.

Having clocked 500+ hrs into this game I'm beginning to see the shortcomings of it.
The game is ok up to a certain point. All the annoying stuff from D2 has been removed more or less effectively, but has resulted in the birth of new and worse problems.
The skillsystem is great, and the removal of manual statpoint allocation doesn't ruin the game, in my opinion. The story is ok, but

The gameplay follows the well known recipe from D2. Battle is fast paced and sometimes hectic, especially in the later difficulties.
But the game fails on two very critical points - item drops and endgame.
Good loot is hard to come by, by farming and when you happen to get a rare or legendary drop, it's usually worthless. When you've finally given up on farming loot because it's no fun, the interest in the game drops like a rock. That's when you might go to the AH for gear upgrades......and by doing that you lower your chances for decent drops even further....which again might make you go to the AH.
It's a death spiral of boredom when you hit that point.

As far as endgame...well once you've hit the level cap there's really not much more to do but farm gear.
And since farming for good gear is like searching for water in a desert, it'll soon stop being fun.

Basicly, the drop system, the AH and the level cap combined secures that the game stops being fun.
This game can only be saved by buffing the drops significantly, removing the AHs, and removing the level cap, because once you hit 60 it becomes a repetitive wandering in circles with close to ZERO reward for your time.

Welcome to your next job, courtesy of Blizzard, except the neat twist is that you pay. A lot of people might complain about the always online aspect of the game, but chances are you still will play a game with DRM if it is a good game. Diablo 3 is a decent game, but it will eat your soul as advertised, perhaps it's better not to be lured in this time.

Diablo 3 is a game that remains more or less true to its predecessors. If you enjoy hitting logs, skeletons, or pots, and watching a shower of gold and items fall to the ground, you will be pleased the core mechanics are unchanged. The current ability system actually works fairly well, letting you swap skills and customization on the fly. D3 has some downsides though, some of which are fairly minor and metagamey while others are serious. It's got an internet connection requirement, but let's face it, it's not 1996 anymore. The lack of talent trees or stat placement some people may miss, but I found the trees bloated, and requirements for gear was kind of annoying. The itemization for gear is terrible. Fully half of the things you find have stats that are of no benefit to *anyone*. STR wand? Come on now. Furthermore this applies to legendary items as well; something that should be an awesome find is too often vendor trash. This ties in with the auction house, which I feel completely subverts the point of the game - 'play, loot, upgrade' is now 'shop, buy, upgrade'. So, I don't know. D2 was a great game, and D3 could easily be a worthy sequel with some work, but there are a lot of things going on that will probably make you stop playing after a week. Expand

Has lots of potential but fails to reward the player enough. Needs more random maps and less random loot. Sound, graphics and general mechanics are good enough.

On one hand, its a good game. Well made, typical of its genre, lots of clicking etc :)

On the other so far (end of Act 2) little or no sub-plots. Dumbed down stats management - do companies not realise that players want to feel as though their characters are personal? Fixed stats per character type destroy that. No character portraits or customisation. Every character, colour aside

Finallly, online DRM.... battle net down again.... first weekend.... they have had so long to get this right. And they have failed miserably. If online DRM was not around, I'd give it an extra couple of points. As it is, I have a distinct problem with not being able to play a single player game without the need for an internet server.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]
