Why so many Negative reviews? Just because they changed it to be more user friendly and more entertaining? I give it an 8.

I overall like the graphics, the gameplay and how user friendly they made the game! It may be downgraded a bit for that part but oh well, it is still enjoyable.

The only problems I see so far that most people(not the sore raters) see is the lack of character customization and the server's launch problems but that isn't too big of a issue, they WILL get it fixed and working in no time!

As a fan of Diablo 2 its a worthy successor to the Diablo series, if not a bit linear and it may not the the mind-blowing, genre defining experience we all expected, there is lots of hack and slash fun to have here. One cool feature is that anybody who is accompanying you in battle like a follower have interesting things to say and talk to your character, making them feel alive and believable. Not just mindlessly following you around. One of the worst parts of the game is constantly having to be connected to the internet to play the game. It is ridiculous that i need to online to play a single player game! What if i go on a trip and i want to take my laptop and play on the way or something? Im just not going to be able to and ill have to deal with it even though its a SINGLE player game, although you can play the game with random people online or your friends so thats good. Overall Diablo 3 is a great hack and slash RPG that is one of the best games to come out this year. Expand

Having played through all character types on normal, I have to say this game feels very close to the original games in terms of gameplay, story and audio quality, okay so the leveling and buffs system is all new but it seems to work pretty well and the auction house is handy for folk that can't be bothered with grinding for that "perfect fit" gear.

Personally I never suffered any timeout

Personally I never suffered any timeout or lost saves or server issues whether in solo or co-op modes but can appreciate how crappy that would be due to its drm method which is a bit over the top, also the huge price by PC game standards (Most games are £25 on release these days, but thankfully I only paid £20 for my D3 2 days after release so can't moan there either).

Will Torchlight 2 be better? who knows but I'll be buying that as well since it's dirt cheap and has most of the missing stuff PC gamers demand.

Let me get the controversial things out of the way first. Hundreds of people on here gave this game a 0/10 for a number of reasons: You have to be online to play, DRM, and the Real Money Auction House.

The people complaining about the always online/DRM thing have a point, but I personally don't mind that much. Diablo is a game best played online anyway and as far as DRM goes, there has been worse. At least you aren't limited to how many computers you can install the game on and you don't have to jump through hoops to download it. You just can only play on one computer at a time. Unlike most DRM, this doesn't punish people who purchased the game legally. Yes, it meant that servers were overburdened during the midnight release, but since then, it hasn't really been a problem.

As for the Real Money Auction House, yes it allows for people to "buy power". However, this was going to happen anyway, as Diablo II showed us. There were still going to be people who would put up Diablo III items on eBay or on other auction websites. Up until now, Blizzard has wasted a ton of effort trying to put a stop to this practice, but they've just accepted that they can't. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Additionally, if this new system works, Blizzard can keep Diablo III running without implementing subscriptions.

Now, I can imagine people disliking these things, but as I said in my Portal 2 review, these aren't good enough reasons to rate a game a 0/10.

0/10 should be reserved for the worst game you could imagine. Can you imagine a worse game than Diablo III? Yes? Then it doesn't deserve a 0/10. You might argue that you gave it a 0/10 for being "unplayable", but what you really mean is that it was unplayable for the first hour or so it was live. Get over it.

As for my feelings on the game, I think that it's a worthy successor to the series. It's not perfect. I do wish that you could play the game offline and just went online to verify your Battle.net account once. Playing single player online seems like a waste. I also feel like the skill system is way too streamlined.

I think the presentation is vastly improved this time around. All of the characters talk and it feels more natural than ever before. I think Blizzard took a few cues from Bioware games and Bioshock. The flow of the game is a lot smoother.

The dungeon crawling can be a bit repetitive and so far it isn't very challenging. Perhaps it's because I'm still on Normal difficulty or because I've played Diablo games for most of my life, but health orbs drop way too often and I haven't died once yet. I'm hoping the difficulty curve ramps up significantly.

The environment effects are cool and occasionally useful. The story is compelling and intelligent. The combat is a lot of fun. The bad guys have a lot of variety. The artisan/crafting system is very robust, even if it doesn't have the cool element of discovery that Diablo II had (I still think the Horadric Cube partially inspired the crafting table in Minecraft).

It isn't a perfect game, but it is a very good game and it always bothers me when whining children on Metacritic spam overly-negative reviews just because of one or two aspects of a game that they collectively dislike and they want to "send a message" by bombing the Metacritic score.

Sorry to say it, but if you care enough about a game to buy it at midnight on a weekday and then rage about it on Metacritic, you probably like it more than you'd care to admit. You may be frustrated with the game, and that's fine and should be accounted for in your reviews, but frustration implies that you want to love the game, but these issues get in the way of that (kind of like with ME3). And is a bit of frustration with an otherwise great game enough to give it a 0/10? I personally don't think so.

I personally enjoyed this a lot for the time I played it. It's not as addictive and re-playable as Diablo 2, and it doesn't offer the variety of environments and loot to be found in it's biggest competitor Torchlight 2, but it's still very well done. Most of the complaints I hear are either technical issues that have been resolved or players disagreeing with specific new mechanics. TheI personally enjoyed this a lot for the time I played it. Most of the complaints I hear are either technical issues that have been resolved or players disagreeing with specific new mechanics. The worst of them is the introduction of the Auction House that makes it too easy to get much better loot by cash or gold purchase instead of earning it through gameplay like it was in D2 and like it is in Torchlight 2. The difficulty has clearly been tweaked around the idea that the game has to be challenging for people who will buy the best gear right at the beginning of Inferno, and that crippled the game's playability for those wanting to do it the old fashioned way. I think any ARPG fan will have fun up to Inferno difficulty regardless. It's just up to you if it's worth tolerating the problems after that point, but you've already played through the story multiple times to get that far. Expand

-1 point for constant connection. This should not be a standard. You CAN have games like Demon/Dark Souls which allow for both a constant online mode AND offline mode. -1 point for the graphics. You can say they were "going" for that look, I say it still looks like muddy crap. Beyond that, i'm having a lot of fun. Hopefully they will release some texture packs or something.

Lets all just give it 0's or 1's based on that first day problem. Firstly I have played Diablo since the beginning. I remember picking up the original many years ago and being surprised and excited at just how good it was. Diablo 2 was no exception. My favorite game ever made, it surpassed everything that I thought when it was released. Still have my collector's edition of that. Everything about Diablo 2 improved upon the first game and made it a hell of a lot of fun. Especially the environments and story. With Diablo 3 the bar was pretty high I must say. At first glance I was unsure about the whole thing. The graphics, the story, the new talent system. I really was hoping it would go in the same way as Diablo 2, keeping those dark environments, traditional heaven and hell graphic style, and improve upon the story and talents. Well finally Diablo 3 is released and to my surprise its actually very very good. At first I admit I was a troll, always putting it down for the typical view on the graphics. But actually playing it for quite a while I noticed that it exactly does what it was meant to do and that is improve upon each game and make it unique in its own right. The environments are fantastic. Act 2 being my favorite. The combat I especially love. Its fast paced and the powers each class gets are really enjoyable to use. So has all this time that has passed been good to us fans then in the form of this game? I would say absolutely. However what makes me give it an 8 is a few minor things and one major thing. First the minor things.. the graphics can be a bit uneven because of physics involved..I noticed it did slow down my computer sometimes. This can be adjusted of course in the graphics menu. Next the chat window font size really hurts the eyes and could use a font size option. Next gripe is not having a main capital area for players to hang out in. This would give players a chance to communicate and check out gear etc. Another minor gripe is a few graphical glitches and bugs that sometimes spring up, I had my toon jump back a few times (hopefully not from lag) and a few visual problems. Finally Diablo looks skinny as a rail...what happened to the lord of terror?.

The major gripe is the online connectivity and these errors we got on launch day. No game where you pay 60-100 dollars should lock you out. Blizzard has been irresponsible for changing an original single-player game into a game where you HAVE to be connected constantly. When I first started playing I want to play solo so not giving players the option is a really bad move. This also brings up those problems we all had trying to connect. Error after Error. Blizzard who are one of the richest developers has no excuse for allowing this to happen. While other countries have no problems we are left sitting at home being forced to enter our password a million times. Its just appalling to say the least. Give us a offline mode please!. All in all Diablo 3 has met my expectations greatly and I am so far loving every minute of it. Customization of character looks would have been nice but once you start wearing armor its no big deal. The combat is fast and furious. Dialogue really interesting (female monk is in my opinion the best character in the game and her voice actress does a terrific job) and story continuing Cain's fairytale. I also have to say the collector's edition is one of Blizzards best. They did a fantastic job on it. I would definitely recommend the game. Its one of the best titles so far to come out this year. Were all annoyed by the launch day problems and this stuff really shouldn't happen but if we can get by that you will realize a game that is a joy to play and continues the Diablo tradition.

You all might as well get used to the format of logging on to play a game. It's a model you are exposed to a lot more than you realize when you gen up just about any game these days. I do have problems with Diablo...After 12 years, this game should have been better in several respects (including graphics, storyline and character creation). However, the pacing of the game is something that no one else has ever been able to replicate or even come close to. The second I let my guard down, then a giant mob enters the story. It's very well done in that regard. Torchlight was horribly paced and completely predictable and for the life of me I'll never understand what people see in it unless your IQ is below 80 (which I'm pretty sure also applies to most of the incredibly negative reviewers or they are under 15). Also, this is NOT an RPG but is an action RPG which is a whole 'nother ballgame. I was disappointed in its length but I must say that it is another game in nightmare and hell modes. Finally, the cinematics are great but way to short. Hopefully, the inevitable expansion will greatly enhance the play of the game. Expand

Or they're just totally over-reacting over the rough launch the game had (server issues, basically). Those are pretty much smoothed out now. Also, people really need to understand that going by hype when it comes to games is ALWAYS a mistake, no matter how good the game really is. Diablo 3 is made by BLIZZARD, so of course it's going to get way over-hyped. More importantly, the previous Diablo games were made back during the golden age of games, which is sadly gone now. This type of game was very unique in those days, so OF COURSE the first two Diablo games had that awesome wow-factor that games these days rarely match. Diablo 3 came out a DECADE after its predecessor. That's a very long time. You can't expect it to be an instant cult classic. Actually, the very fact that it's this good after a whole decade of other loot games coming out and watering the genre down is pretty impressive. Anyway, regarding the details. Diablo 3 looks great. If you compare it to Diablo 2, it's light years ahead in visuals. Spell effects are awesome looking (though tend to be expensive to render, even with the limiter enabled). The big open fields and dungeons you get to explore have a very awesome painterly look to them and it can be very hard to tell where polygons are even at sometimes (this is a very good thing).. Diablo 3 looks great, despite not having super high tech shaders, high poly models, and high resolution textures. Blizzard did a fantastic job budgeting the visuals so they were relatively inexpensive to render while looking great. People complain about it looking too cartoony and I guess they expected Blizzard to go for a realistic look. Quite frankly, Diablo 2 never even had a realistic look to it to begin with, so the mindset that Blizzard screwed up with the visuals is pretty convoluted in my opinion. Diablo is a fantasy after all. Cartoonish and surreal visuals are practically a staple amongst the genre. Regardless, Blizzard maintained a level of grittiness suitable for the Diablo series, while giving the art style a deft touch. That's a win in my books. And sounds? I think the ONLY thing I could possibly complain about is the occasional iffy voice acting on certain characters. Decard Cain's "feeble Sean Connery-sounding" voice gets a bit annoying at times, but he's only in the first act, so it's not a big deal. A few random skills have weak sound effects I guess. The impact sound for the Barbarian's leap ability is a bit odd, for instance. Other than that, the soundtrack is fantastic and the voice casting is overall pretty solid. As for plot and story. Yes, it's not the strongest and some things are predictable, but it's there and it's presented in a way that isn't intrusive to gameplay at all. It's there to give you a sense of direction; why you're in this dungeon and what your primary goals are throughout each act. The pre-rendered cinematics are absolutely incredible to watch too. something Blizzard has always done incredibly well (just make a movie already). There's minor cut scenes which are just sketched art on books, with your character narrating events and whatnot. Those are surprisingly painless to watch. Overall, Diablo 3's story just flows with the gameplay nice and simple, even if it's not riveting or totally original. On to animations. This is one thing that's somewhat weak regarding Diablo, and is one of the reasons I'm giving the game an 8. Animations aren't HORRIBLE but they're not perfect either. In-game cutscenes are rather awkward to watch because what TECHNICALLY goes on in cutscenes is so misguided and poorly emphasized in the character animations. Blizzard didn't really bother to do any extensive choreography for characters, so they simply look like NPCs moving around in the game world rather than characters acting on a stage. It's a very common thing in video games and it's not a HUGE letdown or anything, though if Blizzard had done some serious choreography, it would have gone a very long way and made experiencing the actual story a lot more enjoyable. As for combat and whatnot, animations look fine to me. Monster mobs look menacing at times, and your abilities LOOK like they pack a punch (especially if you go Monk or Barbarian). Character movement animations are solid, and the basic attack animations are well-done. Essentially, combat encompasses all the strong points of Diablo 3's animations as whole. Lastly, the gameplay is fantastic. Simple controls, overhauled inventory system, skills are very intuitive. Combat is very fun and fast-paced. I miss the customized attribute system, but the new system works great, even if you get less customization. Not a HUGE deal though. Expand

Apart from that though, it is still a fun game. Servers were messy the first couple days, but that is to be expected in such an anticipated game like this. People are way too quick in whining about the servers being down as you can't predict how stable servers are going to be no matter how much you prepare for it which is what people fail to realize. They probably could have kept the open beta going longer and got more data for it to use for release day, but I'm sure after a week of it being released, everything will settle down and will be fine from there on out.

I don't like how the game is only 4 acts long. For a game that has been in development for this long, you would think they would try to squeeze as much as they could into this game and throw in at least 5 total acts. Hopefully an expansion won't be too far off and we won't have to wait too long for it.

I've never been a fan of Diablo, but decided to give it a shot and I was pleasntly pleased. It has many good features and can keep one amused for hours on end. The story I found somewhat lacks, maybe due to the fact I didn't play previous diablo's but the gameplay more than makes up for that.

I encountered many of the game breaking glitches as others have mentioned, some were fixed, but rushed development and releasing an unfinished game has to have some consequence against the final score.

A solid 8, hopefully with patches the game can climb into a 9, I consider anybody giving this game a 10 a "fanboy" there are issues that can't be overlooked, it is far from perfect. I wonder how much Blizzard pays the gaming companies to score so many 10's when fans playing the game looks seriously upset.

The graphics aren't anything special, but the art direction is pretty decent. I'm not sure what their thinking on graphics was, possibly it was a concern about requirements. Now the key is similarities and differences to d2. The skill system is far more simple which is a shame, since I enjoyed really growing as a character and having the skills stack up. However, this does save me the tens of hours I had to spend reading guides on exactly what skill point allocation you needed to use at every level. This leads to more viable builds, and simpler character progression, but it removes the coolness of things like the hammerdin which took advantage of the stats system to make a spell initially thought to be useless an incredible killing machine. I do like the rune system, which seems like it will allow for some interesting combinations of spells and usages. I think character variety will be mostly about items, and what passives/runes you run with, more than any kind of skill build. The crafting system is intriguing, but I haven't used it enough to comment on how it relates to the endgame. I think the world structure is very similar to Diablo in terms of town and interconnected monster areas. Any complaints of increased linearity I think are due to the fact that you have more story tying together your quests, and actual map marker. You will see a number of people expressing their displeasure by using what I call "review centric cusswords", as in reviews that are their equivalent of cursing out the game; "wow inspired", "linear" "pay to win" etc etc. Is this the greatest game I've ever played? No. Is it a horrible abomination such that diablo would use in his own army? Also no. Since its about impossible to find an unbiasesd review on this page, I would suggest watching gameplay footage and deciding for yourself.

As for you guys writing 0s and 1s, do you really think you're doing anything to the game sales?

When you can get connected the game is pretty cool. Especially if you are long time fan of the franchise. I just wish I could consistently connect. I may post an updated review later after I can get more play time. I bought the collector's edition and have to admit I was pissed on launch not being able to play for the first 24 hours or so. Here is hoping I like it more next week.

Aslong as the difficulty increases it will keep me interested. It is lacking in depth however, I think they over simplified a bit too much, therefore its not a 9 or 10. Overall D3 is a great game with a big flaw. Diablo is not WoW, so it's a sin to force online game for single player campaign. It's not tolerable that I can't play the game I paid for if I'm not connected!! I live in an island and this would be perfect for my weekends away!

It's disappointing you can no longer distribute attribute and skill points to your own liking, as this was the staple of the previous diablo's. While this makes customization almost a literal no-go, they replay value of the game is still pretty high. It's fun to try and beat the game on a higher difficulty setting (which gets pretty hard), and there are five very different classes to choose. And, despite you having no controls over what skills you learn, the skills themselves are numerous and interesting. All in all, Diablo III is a good game, it's just hampered by poor decisions that were probably made to "streamline" the game. If you try to please everyone, you only disappoint everyone. Game is good, a little innovation on the ARPG genre which was terribly needed. Battle.net server issues only thing hurting it at the moment. Addition of offline single player (even if a connection is needed to DRM check every 30-60 days or something) would go a long ways towards solving the complaints.

D3 is an evolution of D2, exactly like a lot of people wanted it. They took D2 and polished the game, removing some things and improved others. Like the stat trees. A lot of people complained that it was more fun to customize the game that way, but we all know, we´d have the same stats/ optimized stats for every class in the end. The skill tree is so much better. It has a lot more customization and gives more spells at the same time to work with. The interface is nice to look at, but those things were all something we just expected to be there anyway. Leveling... If it aint broke, dont fix it. I honestly think this was a step back. It feels like I´m doing quests in WoW. The game doesnt have the same feeling of freedom as D2 did. You´re bound to following a path and have no options to skip anything, unless you´ve already done it. Boosting also seems to have died with D3, which some might think is good, but I feel like it takes too much time to reach lvl 60. Once you´ve gone through it all, if your friends need you on a new class or you just wanna play something else, you´d want the option to make it fast to the content you wanna be at (inferno, right?). The gameplay. Well it´s almost flawless, except for the few times where a monster's target frame is too big and you cant move your hero. The combat is fluid and for some reason its just so much fun to watch your hero tear through creep after creep. They got it right and they can fix what they didnt. This is the part of the game people are looking for and will be what keeps us playing it for years. A thing I´d like to see implemented is the option to use "WASD". This is mainly for the arena pvp to come, cause it is the best way to move your hero around while having maximum control. They used it in Bloodline champions, so yes it is possible to work very well.

The crafting. Crafting feels boring. You just buy your skill levels. There is no market to sell crafting mats on ah for people to level their profession, which is a missed opportunity. The story is relatively long, compared to most other single player campaigns that are accompanied by a big multiplayer. But it still feels short. It feels rushed. When I played through it, I wasnt trying to guess what happened next, like I usually do. The story didnt really put much effort into getting to know the characters very well. The story and plot had a lot of potential, but missed out. The sound and graphics are great. I see a lot of people complaining, saying the graphics should be much better. But this is a game, that runs so smooth and without any kind of errors, while still looking good. Like SC2, Blizzard delivered a game with rock solid performance. Most of the errors are serverside and will most likely go away with time. Not like Skyrim, which looks good, but the first google result on it is how to fix crash errors. Overall they got the gameplay right and they´ll make a lot of money. The game isn't perfect and a lot of people seem unhappy, but in the end they´ll still be Bli$$ard.

It's unlike everything I've ever seen before, with only one flaw: they didn't pull it off 100%. Theoretically, this system would allow for infinite and flexible builds and unlimited diversity (a very cool concept) but because certain skills don't scale well or are outright useless for the absurdly difficulty inferno difficulty endgame, player builds become homogenized. Sure there'll be a few minor variances, but I challenge you to find a wizard without venom hydras, or a demon hunter without hungering arrow, or a witch doctor without zombie bears. Supposedly this is being worked on as we speak, but in the meantime it's enough to taint the endgame a bit. Also the always online requirement is a big of a nuisance, though I forgave it after I finally caved and started playing the auction house.

In addition to having an unexpectedly amazing physics engine, murdering demons (something you'll be doing a lot of) is incredibly satisfying. Enemies die in different ways depending on the methods used to kill them. Poisoned enemies begin to rot and peel away on the ground, burned enemies are charred husks, victims of arcane magic continue to glow with magical residue, and enemies struck with enough physical force can sometimes have their bodies completely separated from their skeletons. And just to be completely clear, I am not exaggerating what I just said in the slightest bit. You can LITERALLY hit a zombie so hard, his skeleton detaches and flies away while his body liquifies into a bloody smear. Even the smear is dynamically generated.

So much has been poured into the fine details of this game to make it incredibly satisfying, so it honestly makes me a little sad to see so many people rating it with zeroes because of things like "it's more colorful than diablo 2"

All in all, this new ARPG is doing some crazy new things, things I fully expect to see copied by competitors in the future.

Like D2 the game leans heavily on finding loot but has created a system where anyone can jump in and have a very satisfying session without the need to have some special set of armor or purchase items for real money just to compete. And the best part of all is the DRM! Yes I said it and thank the powers that be for making that decision. Good by hackers and dupers. I don't miss you one little bit. I have over 50 hours into this game and it hasn't even been out for two weeks. I love it, I can't get enough of it, I want to max out every single class in the game. And I will at the rate I'm going within the next couple of weeks. So here is my grading: Story - 7/10 It's not terrible but it's certainly not the best and coming from Blizzard it is certainly not up to par. Graphics - 7/10 this one is well-thought out and I have to say that instead of incorporating a lot of different graphics options into the game Blizzard left it at about medium compared to a game like well, even Starcraft 2 looks better in many areas. No to the people who think it's cartoony, it does not look like WoW, I hate that F$#@!#$ game and I would not compare them ever, it is very dark and creepy if you don't think so, get to the basement of Leoric's manor in ACT I, then maybe you'll agree. Gameplay - 10/10 Now this is where Blizzard shines, everything from the loot system to the crafting (not the best, but by far better than some I have seen), it's all so addictive it's ridiculous, that's probably what has kept me going the most, knowing that I will get some kick ass bow for my Demon Hunter. Also, despite what some people might say I love the skills, and not just for the DH, but for all the classes. I have at least a level 20 of the Witch Doctor, Monk, and Demon Hunter, and I love the skills. COOP - I'm not going to rate this, I feel it still belongs under gameplay though. With 4 people on nightmare difficulty(or normal for that matter), this game is great fun, get 4 of your buddies together and it's a blast, running with skype and throwing each other loot if you're different classes, the game get's incredibly challenging and very very interesting. ********* I will end on this note, it is a fun game, however, $60 for a disappointing launch worldwide and a server based game that has ABSOLUTELY NO single player, makes me somewhat angry, but I forgive for the fact that these issues have certainly gotten better and if you disagree you're either an idiot or you haven't played since you wrote your 0/10 review on the day this game came out. I'm not saying it's the best game out there, and frankly Torchlight II will probably give it a run for it's money, but it's a solid game, with solid mechanics, a fun all around campaign to trek through alone or with friends, and IMO it was worth the money for me. Take that with a grain of salt, go to youtube and watch some gameplay vids, then make your own decision. Expand

It's somewhat simplified compared to D2, but that's not a bad thing. Plus, the difficulty here is real, and not artificially brutal like it was in D2 where you could face near-invincible creeps unless you had a certain set of gear at your disposal.

Also, I salute the auction house so far, because this game is heavily luck dependant, and having bad loot luck equals doom, so being able to sell eachother unwanted gear legally is awesome.

Playing alone, I find the followers to be lackluster to say the least. Their dialogue is way off in my opinion, and are far too unreliable to be used as any help. The templar even can't charge properly, just gets wedged into a wall and wastes cooldown.
The massive wall surrounding Inferno is also way bad, as I can't even clear act I without farming my way to better gear, which stunts the flow of the game. Then rather have 2 seperate difficulties, one for newly dinged 60's and one for the brutally awesome players where a full party is needed.

All in all, buy this game. Worth it, but you'll need to embrace the new.

D3 feels very polished, I didn't experience any bugs at all. The servers were down twice last evening for about 60-90 min total out of the 6 hours I played. They did post warning messages before closing down for maintenance though, it didn't bother me that much. So far I'm giving it an 8+. It's a great start. A very solid multiplayer fantasy action experience. If they get the PvP right then it might just reach 9.

Now, the issues with this game are still there: The fact that you ALWAYS have to be online to play is the worst sign of the future of gaming bar none. The fact that the developer can control when, how, and what you play is such a terrible idea and really treats the consumer like dirt when they have no say over what they're doing. The fact that your subjected to Blizzard's Battle.net, which I've never been impressed with, is another reason that can make playing this game alot more difficult. However, the bottom line is this: The game is super fun, especially with other people. The fact that every map basically is a randomly generated dungeon adds a fresh element to replaying the story on the harder difficulties. Whatever you think of Achievements, if you actually go out and try to obtain them, it'll make playing this game more fun and give you some goals to shoot for. The best thing, however, is definitely playing with other people. I've had the opportunity now to play through the story once in single-player and once with 3 other people and playing this game with a full party was so much fun. It really adds to everything that this game is and your missing out if you are only playing single player. You can even join public games with random people to see how it is but playing it with people you know and enjoy being around is the best part of this game, especially when everyone is playing different classes and your coordinating with each other especially on the harder difficulties. Yes, there are alot of problems that surround this game in how you get to the point where you are playing it. However, beyond the fairly simple story, this game is easily one of the best of the year and the fact that you can have a fairly old computer, like I have, and still play this without the lag that usually accompanies new releases like this make this a must play. You'll have the issues that I said before but your doing yourself an injustice by not playing this game with your friends. It really is that fun. Expand

I was 19 years old when Diablo 1 came out and loved the hell out of it. I also played Diablo 2 as well and it was extremely fun. I've been a gamer for well over 25 years and have seen the good and the bad. In a nutshell, Diablo 3 is a FUN game that really brings back the feeling of old school dungeon crawling from D1 and D2.

There are some things that I wish they kept, such as town portal and identify scrolls instead of just clicking a hotkey for free, but overall they really have done an excellent job.

One of my beefs is the "always online" mode which is extremely annoying. I took two points off for that decision by Blizzard. The graphics are pretty nice, the sound is on par for what you would expect, the monsters are well thought out and fun to kill.

Don't listen to the trolls. If you enjoyed D2 and are not some major dickweed that will complain about everything, you will enjoy D3.

As far as action RPG's go, Diablo III is definitely a bash-in-the-door dungeon crawler, and it sticks to what it knows best: blasting things, looting, and blasting things harder. Most of the time, you'll be casually destroying weak enemies, but the real fun comes in when tackling the bosses or the elite enemies. Some of them are very difficult, and won't be beaten without tight tactical play. The difficulty is curved nicely, for the most part, and if you can't beat an enemy, a switch of skills often does the trick, but sometimes you just need to farm to move past it.

As a casual Diablo II veteran, I really enjoy the new direction Blizzard has taken with the series: no decision is permanent, which means that you can try things out, reverse non-optimal decisions, and switch play styles on the fly to see what works best or you. Character customization is therefore limited to the build you choose to play at any given time. However, many Diablo veterans dislike the more radical changes from previous iterations, so I won't say Diablo III is better, just that I like it a lot more.

The auction houses add the ability to buy/sell items with other players, which can make a huge difference if the random loot you get doesn't leave you with, for example, good armor but a useless pair of pants. The downside is that a lot of the gear needed to perform well at the hardest difficulties can be prohibitively expensive, and isn't much of an improvement over farming.

The always-online restriction does get annoying, especially because I've been in some areas since launch with bad Internet, but it's nice that all of single-player play won't be lost when I decide to play online co-op. It makes things harder, but ultimately doesn't ruin the game if you normally have access to a mediocre or better connection.

All in all, it's hard to beat Diablo if you're interested in a good dungeon crawler. Don't go in expecting it to be like Diablo II, because it isn't. I recommend it, but beware that your mileage may vary, especially for the high cost.

The story sucks and the voice acting and dialogue is terrible but once you play through once you are just going to skip it all anyways.
The AH is a piece of crap right now but that will improve. Like with WoW i don't like that items sell for nothing to vendors to force you to put it on the AH. I find that a pain and I have 2 mule characters full of rares that I am procrastinating on auctioning.
Graphics and Art: I understand why they went with low graphics: my bro has a new gaming rig and playing 4 player is complete chaos on the screen with the amount of stuff happening. There is just no way they can make the graphics higher end with the amount happening on the screen.
The art style I originally thought was WoW-ified and not dark enough for diablo but it is actually dark and gory when you get into it. You don't notice any 'colourfulness' as being out of place when you're playing it.
The online only aspect sucks but it's just the reality of the game and if you don't like it play something else pretty much. I think they did it to avoid hacking: not about anti-piracy.
In the end I think the game got a huge backlash from a predictably shaky launch and from all of the changes that the fan base didn't like pre-release, but ultimately the game is worth the $60 bucks and is fun. Whether people will be playing it for years to come depends on how balanced the game mechanics end up being in the endgame and pvp, but it's not like we have to pay a monthly sub.

It seemed like a rather amateur mistake, unfit of Blizzard, but it's mostly corrected by now (at least I can get into the game pretty much whenever I want, and I don't randomly lose achievements or characters any more). There will also be a kind of duality in my review, because I can't really do justice to the game itself AND the underlying service with a single decimal value.
With that out of the way, let's get to the core game itself. In a nutshell, I think it's fantastic, and it totally brings to the table what's expected of a Diablo game. I understand why many say that the character building part was dumbed down and made more casual, but I disagree. I agree, that in the first few hours the character progression is very linear and even boring, but after you have unlocked all the skills and a good number of runes, things become much more interesting. There is a lot of possibility for experimentation and customisation in the later parts of the game (nightmare and up), and I think the current slot system can yield much more diverse results than the previous skill tree system. I just like it better, and it's simply not true that there is no depth to it. Furthermore, I felt that Diablo II's stat point system was a sort of a 'there is only one way to do it right' system, and I don't really miss it.
Graphically the game is OK. It's nowhere near cutting edge, but its not ugly either. The environments are very well designed and diverse, although the whole backdrop seems a bit washed out, bleak compared to the characters and effects on top of them. The sound design and visual effects are brilliant, and the art style is flawless too, although it could have been a bit darker/more grisly in general. Its true that the level design (layout) is missing it's predecessor's procedurally generated randomness, but I think it was worth to trade it in for the more capturing, detailed environments. The random elements are still there in the form of dungeons, events and challenges, and the gameplay is very dynamic and impactful. As far as difficulty goes, I haven't played on nightmare yet, and normal difficulty is in fact a bit too easy, but the way I see it, the more technical/tactical side of the gameplay begins on the higher difficulty levels, and normal mode is more oriented towards experiencing the story and getting used to the gameplay mechanics of your character. But this also means that with each playthrough the normal difficulty is more and more obsolete, eventually becoming a boring chore (as you roll new classes, the only things that keeps you playing through normal are the unique features of your new class, and reaching higher difficulty levels).
So in a nutshell, the game itself is definitely the king of it's genre in my eyes, and apart from a few flaws and pitfalls, it's nearly flawless. In light of this, the core game gets a solid 8/10 from me.
But not so the underlying service. The constant online requirement is a draconian DRM, that really only hurts the paying customers, causing only frustration for those who have particularly unstable internet connections and just want to play in single player mode. The real money auction house is a travesty, and I will simply avoid it at all costs. Although I like the AH (the in game currency one), this whole online only scheme seems to be a shameless money grab from Blizzard, and I would have very much preferred a totally separate online and offline experience, with my single player characters on my hard drive, and my single player experience having nothing to do with my ISP, or availability of Blizzard servers. So the underlying Battle.net service for Diablo III gets a shameful 2/10 from me.

In a nutshell, Diablo 3 is a well refined Diablo 2 for modern times. Visceral physics-based destruction, awesome monster models, realistic CGI cutscenes, full voice acting and pleasing special effects are all excellent additions to the Diablo franchaise, making the experience that much sweeter.

It seems the nearly 11 years of development wasn't enough - some character voice acting (Female barbarian, for example) is terrible, with a lack of enthusiasm and a poorly imitated accent. The story and setting in the final act felt very rushed - the supposedly epic moment in the game featured very small areas, no main city, few monsters, and very rushed story - a lot happens at once, and it all resolves very quickly.

The gameplay has a lot of much-needed refinements, notably the flexible and open skill talent system, single-potions removes the annoying potion spam and randomized 'events' add replayability and exploration. The combat is very satisfying and addictive, and looting monsters has never been better! Multiplayer features a lot of improvements, such as achievements, an auction house, simple partying, proper 'exclusive loot' system and cloud support. Unfortunately, Blizzard played it safe in this area, and unless you've never played previous Diablo games, you'll find very little new for gameplay.

It's still a click-fest; Blizzard hasn't discovered the wonders of a WASD movement system, though admittedly the 'click area' for monsters is quite forgivable. There were issues around large monsters in trying to move your player instead of attacking - the 'click area' for these demons are usually huge and not very intuitive - I repeat, a WASD movement system would fix this easily. Lastly, the 5 different character classes are vastly out of balance, where the melee classes have very little difficulty, and certain skills are downright trash. Maybe they will be useful in PvP (which was not shipped with the game). Lastly, for $60, Diablo 3 doesn't offer a long game - levels are no longer completely randomly generated a-la Diablo 1, and it only took 17.5 hours to absorb the majority of the game's content! For 11 years of development, a little more substance was expected.
The controversial 'always-on' requirement, aimed at reducing game piracy, causes solo players to suffer. Players can now suffer from lag and disconnects, and is not playable when the servers are down. Not the best decision by Blizzard, but it's not as bad as some say, since the game works great when the servers are up.

Overall, Diablo 3 is a much-needed refinement to the Diablo games, well deserving of the "III" attached. Highly recommended to Diablo fans, those looking for fast-paced multiplayer co-op mayhem or those interested in the next best PC-exclusive title! Unfortunately, Blizzard played it safe with Diablo 3, with very few major gameplay features added and it still feels like an unfinished product, with a semi-operational auction house, promised PvP and vastly imbalanced gameplay. To end on a high note, Blizzard is known to support their games for years and years, so there's no doubt this review's complaints will become obsolete in the future!

The new "skill unlock" system is fantastic - you can finally play the game how *you* want to play it. No two builds will be the same. Look up ANY Diablo 2 build and if you don't see the words "put as many points into strength as needed for equipment, enough in dex for max block and dump the rest in vit" then I'll stand utterly corrected.

The only negative point I can give is the always online system, while i'll never agree with it, it hasn't affected my personal enjoyment of the game. If I lived somewhere with a less stable ISP, then maybe my tune would change a bit, but as it is - can't fault it.

As now the reaper of soul update is online, I think this game has become quite good.
Loot 2.0 is fun, especially the new legendary items are awesome in many ways (e.g. "get your own treasure demon"). Many items have now features which boost skills of the characters, so the right equipment matching your play style got more critical.
The improved Paragon system also hits a nerve.

    - some achievements have to be done again with ROS.

I thought there was nothing wrong with the story, possibly could have done more but didn't need to. Cut scene graphics were great. In game graphics I thought were pretty ordinary to start with but as I grew accustomed to the art style I found myself thinking how good it looked on several occasions. The gameplay for the most part is fairly polished, lag issues sometimes causing minor problems. Special skills ( demon hunter) seem to annihilate whilst the ordinary attack seems underpowered in comparison. I sometimes got the feeling of repetitiveness but this was probably part due to over-tiredness. Probably my biggest frustration was the loot. I seemed to get plenty of rare drops but they were rarely any better than the standard magical items I was carrying, or they were for the wrong class. Even killing the big bosses was a disappointment in loot. By the end of the game I had 75% rare items equipped. I got my weapon from the auction house because with all my grinding couldn't get anything worth using ( perhaps that's blizzards plan). In conclusion, this is one of the rare games that I was interested enough to see through to completion so I definitely don't think it worth the score it's attracted. There are plenty of achievements to go back for etc if you don't have anything better to do. 8/10

And on that front it's a disappointment, therein lies the mixed opinion coupled with a healthy dose of "I don't like things that are different" and "I can't play because of obnoxious DRM".

There's only one major failing of the game that Diablo III is worthy of the harshest criticism for; the story. You'll be hard pressed to find a more generic, cheesy, poorly paced and bafflingly structured storyline within a game. Almost every trope of storytelling you can imagine is used inappropriately within the central narrative, from arrested character development to cringe-inducingly inept villains. There's a lot wrong with the story here, so if you're looking for something that tugs at your heart strings and makes you feel feelings, look elsewhere.

That being said however, the gameplay of Diablo III is polished to a very high standard. While earlier difficulties are a relatively standard hack-and-slash experience, more complex and challenging combat begins to add layer upon layer of depth to the gameplay as you go on. Character builds, itemisation and tactics all begin to play a critical role, and alongside standard progression you have a nicely involved sideline of loot-grinding.
Gameplay is involved and visceral, and randomly generated dungeons (though sadly randomisation is minimal in most overworld areas) keep things fresh for at least a few playthroughs.
Visually, Diablo III boasts low polygon counts, but a richness and attention to detail that makes every setting wonderful to look at.

Ultimately this third instalment in the Diablo franchise doesn't live up to hype, but that's probably the only major crime it commits. If you can handle the always-online requirement and the fact that this game isn't going to be winning any awards for originality or innovation, there's a lot to be enjoyed here. The developers at Blizzard have never been revolutionary artistes or champions of consumer good will, but what they *are* is incredibly effective at making video games that do exactly what they say on the tin.

Diablo III is everything you'll want out of a hack-and-slash, and nothing more. There's enough gameplay in there for you to get more than your money's worth even for the casual player. For the enthusiast, you're likely to sink a hundred hours into this one easily.

The game is very well done, but I just feel that the story could have been better and the world more immersive (no world map)? PVP will be interesting to see when it comes out. The AH was also done very well. Overall great game, but leaves some to be desired.

I disagree with the comments "simplified for 13 year olds" the game is meant to be targeted so everyone enjoys it, simplified means less frustrating.

Graphics are extremely good considering the fact it is the only game that generates its own maps and dungeons.

Don't be spiteful because its having teething problems, its a game that these designers have spent years putting together unless you can state you can do better dont be harsh.

So in all fairness i will give Diablo 3 a 8 not a 10 as i do recognise the mishaps on the game.

Server instability is evident, and the game was down for the majority of its first day (including in the U.S., where is has only been out for a little over 14 hours, and yet it will be down for over half of that.) I'm also docking a point because while the game is very good, it isn't as polished as you'd expect a game to be after such a long development. Some of the physics aren't quite right, and while the graphics are decent, the graphics -do not- seem good enough for the system requirements the game has. In essence, this is my lingering criticism. Diablo 3 requires a decent build, but it feels like it doesn't take full advantage of a good build at all.

The game is very fun, especially with friends, and the cutscenes are some of the most amazing things I've seen in my long gaming life. The classes are unique, the graphics are pleasing, and the giblet explosions bring back my Diablo childhood. It is all around a polished game as well, with very few bugs that I've noticed (besides the glaring login issues, which Blizzard has now released an official apology for). There are excellent and well thought-out money sinks in the game, so gold actually has value, as well as good itemization, and an infinite amount of ways to customize your equipment.

There are a few downsides to the game, which made me give this game a 8 rather than a 9 or 10. First, you MUST be connected to the internet to play single-player, thus your speed an enjoyment of the game depend on your internet connection. Second, normal is far too easy. Nightmare is a little better. I have not played through Hell yet, but I'm guessing it will be what I consider "normal" difficulty for a game not geared towards children. Third, the auction house is nice, but could use some more features (such as searching by item name, and an automatic comparison of the item in auction house to what you currently have equipped). Fourth, maps don't seem that randomized, which lowers replay value.

Overall I think it is worth the money, especially if you are thinking of a game night with your friends.

But the game gets MUCH (!!!) better after the Skeleton King and if you are getting close to lvl 15. It is almost an entirely different game compared to the kindergarten up to the first major boss, Skeleton King. DO NOT make the mistake and play "a few hours" or using Guest pass to lvl 10...and then form an opinion based on this. If you didnt play the game to at least lvl 15 you have no idea how good the game could be.

While playing in co-cop (2 or 3 people) proved immense fun so far, i personally have some things which i would like respective dislike.
I really would wish an ability to zoom-in/out since i think the two, fix zoom levels are very restrictive. Yes, as others i would wish to be able to customize my character as well. I would also wish more emotes (i know, it sounds silly)....but playing with former guildies from WoW and not being able to dance, laugh etc. makes me feel restricted. AFTER ALL, it is still "sort of" an online game and the real fun truly shines playing with mates and friends - this is why i want more emotes.

As for the graphics, as i said above the game gets MUCH better after Skeleton King, also visually. There are some things like over-use of fog..but overall the graphics are GOOD and some/most of the spells and animations (monsters) are fantastic. Seriously, there is not much to complain. The voice acting is also good (IMHO).....sometimes it is cheesy but it fits this genre.

People should stop giving this game a 0 or 1, it's entirely and absolutely uncalled for. It can be a HELL of fun. it's not perfect, no, but good for many, many hours of co-op fun. It's a solid game and people need to realize this. PLAY IT before you trash it.

-Game-play : In terms of game-play, this game its the nail on the head for the most part, the controls are easy and responsive, they feel intuitive for the most part, AND they are not hard to master.
You will find yourself enjoying this game at least when it comes to game-play very much.
    ______
[9.0], (Solid game-play let me give this game a 9, as expected in most Blizzard games game-play wise...)
-Content : On the other end the content of the game in terms of skills, attributes and creativity are kind of disappointing, you get a decent amount of skills, but not as many or as diverse as previous Diablo games, the skill tree although SIMPLE, EASY and INTUITIVE, is very lackluster, and it does not leave a whole lot to the imagination.
Crafting feels a bit to simple and brain dead, you basically bring some above-average items to the blacksmith, you salvage them for materials and you upgrade your skill level (buy paying gold) to make more items, that is about it for crafting, AND rune-crafting with a slight difference that you combine gems to make stronger gems...
As for items, there is a high variety of them In-game, and each item feels rather unique to its own, some items are more appropriate for each Class but overall, it does a good job at diversifying what each class can use what items.
You can customize the color of your vestments with a semi-wide variety of choices between colors, and effects, you can also bind them with gems to make them stronger, overall the item variety seems fine to me, having played through a lot of it by myself the loot feels just right, not to much, but not to little, just fine.
I have played for about 5/6 hours or so, and I still don't feel like the plot is at its end, so therefore I'm assuming story wise this game delivers a long experience, ALTHOUGH its worth mentioning that I like exploring a lot, and did not rush the game at all, taking my sweet time, there is a lot of instances and small dungeons to visit as you are going through the locations of the main plot, which is of course expected and welcomed.
In terms of the enemies you face on the battlefield, its still the same as the previous Diablo games, not exactly SUPER diverse, but it does its job fairly well of providing you with a balanced amount and diversity in your average landscape.
I dislike how there isn't more intuitiveness to leveling stats, as they are attributed automatically at each level, making it easier, but less creative...
    ______
[6.5], (Overall in content it delivers, if you take you're time there is plenty of sweet singleplayer plot to play, but it suffers from some issues, such as lack of skills and stat variety and customization, monsters not being as fully diverse as I would of liked, (this varies from player to players obviously) and ultimately not a whole lot was actually added to the game from the previous installments.
-Graphics and Audio: In terms of graphics I disagree with what most people say...
About them being sub-par to latest games and hardware, I feel the game as very good artsy-styled graphics, the kind of graphics that do not aim to be realistic, but more of creative and vivid, I think it suits the Diablo style a lot, and they did very well in its overall graphic design, landscapes are diverse, special effects on the spells or animations, such as depth of field, or lens flare, etc. (whatever there may be in the engine) are not over done at all, and the game feels crisp and detailed enough to keep you pleased.
Audio-wise the game does a great job at adapting the weird camera angle into 5.1 speakers, the voice-acting is as expected, quite pleasing, and the quality of the creatures and spells all sound top notch and different, the quality is also exceptional...
    ______
Graphics: [7.5], (The graphics overall suit the game very well, although truth be said, you will not be impressed by any of its technology most likely).
Audio: [9], (The audio quality is top notch, and the voice acting does not disappoint at all, diverse sounds keep you on the lookout!).
-Plot-wise : I cannot rate it, as I have not finished it yet, so far good though!
    [X,X], (...)
    Additional notes:
-Despite the fact that the game had a very rough start (with the servers being down and all), when you get past those issues and you get to play the core essence of this addicting game, you realize that those who even rate this game below 5 are simply to upset at Blizzard for not succeeding to successfully smoothly release a game of this magnitude.
When it comes down to it, the game is a great game, worthy of a purchase, if played with good friends the experience almost doubles, but it is a great game by yourself none the less, overall:
    -[8.5] is my rating!

-1 for bad launch day servers. They knew the hundreds of millions of fans that were going to be on launch minute, and they even did an open beta test. Cmon.

For me, diablo iii is not perfect, but still can be a nice game. the only problem is lag and DC. diablo ii is much better than diablo ii,but both nice games.

I've got to say that the majority of the reviews on here are a waste of time. RAWR! I'm mad b/c I can't get into the game! Listen, no matter how good you are as a game developer, when making an online game you can't predict everything. Mistakes were made I'm sure, but do give this game, which is amazing as a game btw, a 0-2 rating b/c they are having online issues is ridiculous. I agree that it should have a single player offline mode, but that doesn't mean that it deserves to get **** on. Expand

Updated review 11-12-2015: I feel my first review was unfair because I didn't spend enough time playing this game (based my initial review from part of Act 1). I heard patches and the expansion fixed a lot of the major problems. They did away with the real-money auction house. I'll give it try sometime and give it the same rating as the critics because I really have no room to talk. The gameplay is definitely Hack and Slash. Yes, you click lots of mobs to death, as such, it plays well. The mood, music, artwork all set a beautifully dark tone. I'm mixed on the character development. I like the direction the rune's are going. I dislike the lack of any real meaning to your weapon outside of its stats. I also miss being able to allocate my stat points as I see fit.

I haven't had any connection issues with the game, but I also chose to sleep through the DDoS attack known as the midnight launch. Really people, No matter how much Blizzard planned, half a million users all trying to log in at 12:01 PST was not going to work... Honestly, I liked the online save, I was able to play via my laptop this morning, picking up right where I left off. I don't understand the people complaining about the lack of an offline mode as this has long been disclosed. If you read the game description and requirements, this was quite clear...

Is it short, I don't know yet, I haven't beaten it... Did some Koreans blitz through in 6 hours, skipping 2/3s of the content? Do I care? Am I enjoying the game... YES

Based on all the negative reviews I'm lucky that upon purchasing this game I had never played Diablo 1 or 2. Most of those negative reviews seem to be based on comparison or expectation. The only reason I picked it up is cause my friends wanted me to join in their festivities. So I did. Twice lucky, I missed launch day, so I never had any issues with errors or connections at all. I have only played this game mulitplayer thus far and have put about 7 hours into it. So far I am enjoying it. Its a great Hack & Slash RPG. Simple story, simple control, simple graphics, great art style and great music. This is the type of game you pick up and play when you want that mindless fun. Brought me back to the days of playing the original Gauntlet. (Obviously enhanced) but a great feeling of classic gaming for sure. It seems at the time of writing this (User score 3.8 on 3000+ reviews) that the average user score reflects the launch day madness and not the game itself. For those that say this is not as good as 1 or 2, thanks, just means I better go back and check those out now too. Expand

There's nothing hugely fancy about Diablo, but it's got what it promised and keeps to the same game play style. And requiring people to be online while playing is NOT DRM, it's called 'your character information is stored on a server so that you can't hack you account and make fake gear'. Doesn't anyone remember the character trainers of Diablo 1 and 2? This is huge problem they had to overcome and this is the only solution for player to player interaction. That said, an offline mode should have been made that wouldn't allow for your character to be an online character, but even that might lead to hacking to transfer fake items to the online world. My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
