I'll start by saying this might be the best PC PORT from console I've ever played. Day 1 launch is perfectly smooth, and no hints of bugs. The presentation here seems Blizzard influenced, which is to say the presentation of this product is flawless. No small feat in today's market! The engine looks amazing and delivers high FPS with no loss in frames on my 1070gtx at 1440p.

And now for why this game is mediocre. First off the game basically plays itself. It is the most entry level shooter I could imagine a modern release being. It plays at about the Doom 2 level of difficulty. Kill things fast dodge left and right, use your abilities. Far too many of the enemies are mindless Zombies who are often un-cleverly spawned into the world, essentially right in front of you with a teleporter beam.
The second problem is the loot and level systems. These are very simplistic, and the numbers make extremely minute differences on gameplay (Youtube these issues if you disagree). The 1-20 leveling system should have just been removed entirely. It serves as a 20 level skill stagger tutorial system that gets disposed of in 10 or so hours of game play never to have any use ever again unless you start a new character. As far as loot goes, there is just nothing to grind for as everything has been balanced so heavily you won't be getting any advantage over other players through item drops. It's hard to get excited about a vanilla loot system. I understand that an intricate loot system creates unbalance, but again where is the fun in everyone having access to all the same stuff?

Lastly despite all the hullabaloo about the countless hours of story in Destiny 2, IT ISN'T COMPELLING! It is all cinematic to the 10th degree, told so that anyone including those with the most extreme attention deficits can follow along. The dialog is so cringe worthy you will have to confront yourself with why you aren't doing something productive.
I've said this in other reviews, but these crazy over the top cinematics the AAA developers keep putting in their games aren't necessary. If you have an incredibly clever well-written story to tell at 100 decibels, by all means use it. But if you are including it just to check boxes it will look sloppy no matter how artistically you glide and swivel the camera around the terrible terrible lines and overused movie memes.

In brief summary, you might enjoy this game if you want a great looking super casual shooter with RPG-ish elements and a 100 decibel 1000 milligram energy drink slammed story that will melt your face off.

The only real positive here is the graphics / art direction. Besides that there's a heavy dose of micro transactions, very little content and somehow it feels even more bland than the first Destiny. This is a game devoid of any passion for the medium, a cynical, uninspired cash grab that should be avoided at all costs.

    The Good:
The story is more developed than the first. I'm a big Firefly fan so it's nice to have Zoey and Mal on board, and Nathan Fillion was the second best part to perhaps the villain.

The visuals are gorgeous. It is mostly stable on my PC. The music...Bungie you blessed sirens.

    The Bad:
    - The gameplay is exactly the same as the first game.
    - The classes are the same (except the subclass is the starting class)
    - The gear, like most FPS Action RPGs, is trivial at best
    - If you even want to consider Competetive PvP you'll be grinding
    - BULLET SPONGES - Enemies are just that. They are not smart. They are not crafty or complex.
    - You do NOT EVER need to use your abilities to succeed in this game. They are afterthoughts.

It's not a terrible game, but it is terribly boring. If multiplayer can somehow change that, that may be it's only saving grace.

Aside from that, there is utterly no community, as it is impossible to communicate with people you don't have on Bnet, so it is very difficult to find a group to play with, if you don't know anybody playing it already. However this game has no soul, it's a by the numbers game using a completely safe game design as not to offend anyone which has resulted in a boring repetitive game.

Initially exciting gameplay with high production value reminiscent of Halo's golden era, but without a healthy community and strange and empty hub level, the premise of levelling and building your character never seems all that important or even interesting and quickly grows old. Destiny 2 would have done far better as an open world MMO than the oddly disconnected thing that it is. Without the involvement of Activision perhaps Bungie might have made something great here. All that money and nothing much to show for it. Instead it's a software-as-a-service masquerading as a first person looter shooter that is neither as rewarding or intriguing as it should be and tries to eek out as much money out of the player as possible with content locked behind paywalls (perhaps to recoup the ridiculous amount of money that went in to marketing it) and that's where it all comes crashing down. As a PC gamer, I've never played the first Destiny game. I jumped into Destiny 2 with my little brother and my friend for a coop campaign and was not disappointed.

Sure, the story is bland, generic, and subtly tries to promote Christianity, but it at least has hilarious and cheerful Cayde. Gameplay is OK. It's not very complex, resembles Borderlands a lot, but at least it's simple.

-Not fashion friendly at all!!!, you are stuck with gear stats that support your abilities and weapons, there is no "re-skin or transmog" -system in place to change the gear appearance.

-Armors are just so damn ugly, just plates sticked together for the most part and since base perks and stats for gear is fixed, it's hard to make a character look the way you'd like him.

-You can wear only 1 exotic gear item and use only 1 exotic weapon at a time, all that stuff you farm for is not even being used like in ANY OTHER GAME with rare gear.
Just let us disable/choose one special perk for one piece and it would be fixed if you think is would brake the game which is already broken balance wise...or.. give transmog at least^^

-A lot of pointless/unbalanced ressources/materials, either way too hard to get (enhancement cores, mod components) or worthless without or almost no use (glimmer, baryon boughs...)

-Exotics are WAY TO RARE now, as a new player it will take years now to get them and you're not safe for dupliocates.

-CAPS!!!! Glimmer cap only 100,000. seriously, increase it!!! shaders 50? postmaster already half full in a few weeks !!! like, what?! increase it!!! like all other caps I can't think of right now!

-Rewards are god awful. Here have one of these, here more stuff to dismantle, here two of those, I feel like I'm dipping my little finger in a sea of rewards. constantly picking daily bounties on every planet that also mostly reward very little. Not to mention as somebody with a life, you're not getting much done and alot of the bounties will be left only halft done before reset! They also tell you how to play and not how you want to play!
Imagine shifting all the bountie rewards to missions/strikes/raids/PvP activities....

    Multiplayer:
-Cheaters not only wallhacking and aimbotting but also do DDOS other players during matches in all kinds of modes. I was attacked a few times. Tools/Tutorials are all over the Net!

-Terrible Matchmaking, no Solo queue option for PvP, beginners are getting destroyd by OP builds and clans. I bet they are scared of the already low pvp player base and it really might take time to get a match for both sides, clan (stacks) and solo but at least more "balance if yu can call it"
Right now it's a terrilbe experience!

-Balance is garbage in this game. No skill based PvP at all, supers with semi god mode and kill everything like Call of Duty killstreaks. Out of hunderest of weapons, it feels like only 10 are being used. (snipers, shotguns, hand cannons and a very few rifles like Bygones are meta) everything else is super bad, beginners will need 20 shots and everyone else 1 or 2 shots with his exotic or legendary with god roll, masterworks and mods for it.

-"Level Advandages disabled" in PvP is a lie, good gear being locked behind level 15-20 or a huge grind, you'll notice this easly on your second or third character if you want to jump on it early and test it. There is a indirect level advantage.

-The game feels empty most of the time for being Multiplayer, alot of instances and solo instances in general, way to many emty public events, all you can do is juming back to orbit and going in again in hope the new instance has some players in it.
The singleplayer camainge needs more random matchups like a few missions have already.
Things like Blind Well need alternative matchmaking, same goes for Raids for people that have already completed the it solo and know what they are doing.
Using third party software or websites for finding people is terrible and takes a lot of time for every activity you do, this should never be the case in any multiplayer game.
Also this is not an MMO like some say, 12 player PvP and 9 co-op...? HA!

    Community:
-Very anti-social community, almost no one uses voice or text chat.
Almost no one is willing to help new players with raids or in any other activity!.

-Community being split up with every new DLC/Expansion and the player base is decreasing because of all the past and present failures.

If taken as a whole, there is very little technically wrong with D2. So why does it tank in reviews? 2 main reasons really(IMHO):
    1, its competent but bland.
2, Bungie have alienated the D2 fan-base with some pretty shady practices. Maybe this was due to it's former partnership with activision, as appears to be the case. Firstly, let me just say I'm not going to needlessly drag a game

2, Bungie have alienated the D2 fan-base with some pretty shady practices. Maybe this was due to it's former partnership with activision, as appears to be the case.

Firstly, let me just say I'm not going to needlessly drag a game because I personally feel let down by it. Game play is fluid and reliable. It is a vast sandbox with plenty to see and do, for the newer player - and there in lies one of the problem. It is a big, glitzy and glamorous experience, as any AAA game on the market. However, whilst doing everything well, there is little that jumps out and "wows" you.

One area that flops entirely is: Comms. You would think that a game that requires you to team up with other players for 70% of the content, would have some well thought out communication system? Well no. Bungie has opted for an extremely ill thought out, or more likely a safe, approach. To avoid the possibility of anyone saying anything that might upset anyone - they've gagged everyone. Want to team up? Good luck doing that in the anti-social "social hubs". You will need to do any comms through a third party app like discord. And this is a massive deterrent for the newer player. All of this content, and they're locked out of it. If by some chance you do find and active clan, more often than not, they will already be established and direct noobs to one of the discord LFGs(looking for group), because they won't be able to inflict damage in raids etc, until above a certain light level. Putting usable communications alone would have done wonders for the game.

Bad faith season passes and content drops: really gets my blood boiling. I am older and have the disposable income to buy a game or two, when I want unwind with friends. But, when some kids has saved up for D2, only to find themselves having to shell out more, every few months. Because the game has adopted a "games as a service" model. Isn't exactly fair to them. They don't pay? They get locked out of new content, and cannot progress to the levels those who paid do. And several months down the line, when Bungie release content that they do want and can afford? Well... they have to buy the other junk content first. This is what I mean by shady practices. I'm not going to get into the Eververse fiasco. No, D2 screwed it's player base 3 months after launch with the "curse of Osiris" release, and saw the numbers tank. It was garbage, that very few liked, on a lonely desolate tiny map with no redeeming features. Since then there have been some great content releases, but the damage was done.

Since the "curse of Osiris" fumble, most content releases have been tepid at best; mainly centering around cheap PvP maps. Bungie still haven't got the message about D2 PvP. Many other free to play games do PvP much better. They have also become a victim of their own massaged figures. Those that play D2 for PvP and or Gambit modes, are a tiny percentage of players, and youtubers/streamers, showcasing their skills. Most players(and all solo players) don't care for going into a PvP map to get fragged by a team, or pro team, sitting "team shooting" them from across the map - and only play these modes because they are forced to complete their weekly milestones. Yet, Bungie, seeing the player count on PvP, think that this is a popular mode. IT IS NOT BUNGIE. It's an awful "click fest" on a cramped map, that you have told them they need several hundred kills on, for a quest step. But, because they are solo queuing, and getting team shot, takes them forever. Bugie then takes these "forced attendance" figures, and thinks, "they must really like PvP, we'll give them more". They don't! They're hostages lol. Making death match levels for doom and quake(years ago) was something we did over night to play with mates the next day. The assets already exist, you just plug them together, test it, and bingo - free content. We didn't take 3 months and charge each other £20 for it. It's lazy, and an insult to paying customers. Remove the need to play PvP for these quests, and you will see the real numbers.

Most of the players today are wanting to explore the world, find new stuff, Lore, and love the story. They can clearly spot when a character from the lore has been shoe-horned in as an excuse to provide a low effort, cheap, recyclable content to charge extra for. You ask them to solve some amazingly difficult, and well thought out puzzles in raids etc(that Destiny does better than anywhere else), but think they can't see this? I hemorrhages players, and is exploitative to the younger player. Don't rob kids for heaven's sake. Then have the cheek to harp on about equality, diversity, and inclusion. You cheapen those meaningful terms for profit.

It is a good shooter, but its a bad service. It is positioned as a game for hundreds of hours, but it doesn't have so much content to actually fill those hours. After completing the story, the side missions, probably some lost sectors, trying out PvP, playing though every raid (maybe even a couple of times)... there is pretty much nothing to do. Running around the open environments randomly killing enemies doesn't count, simply because it is too boring for such a shooter. And all the things listed are generally completed within around 30-40 hours. Buying the expansions can prolong that by another 20-30 hours (that is inaccurate). However, that is not enough to get fun for hundreds of hours.
Another issue is plot. And here i'm talking about both the main story, and stories for side missions. You can forget about the latter - it's simple "the enemy is doing something bad there, go there and kill everyone". The main plot can be rated 5/10.
All in all, it is a decent science-fiction Doom. Nothing more.

While Destiny 2 has a solid foundation and a robust story campaign, its endgame content feels a little lacklustre. The sandbox doesn't have a whole lot of depth, and plumbing each of the hub worlds for secrets doesn't feel that rewarding. Grinding Public Events, Raids, and Strikes with friends is definitely a lot of fun, but there's a huge disconnect between content being cleared and your character strength increasing. There's still a lot of room for Destiny 2 to grow but, for now, it's still got a few kinks to work out.

In a nutshell, Destiny 2 for PC is the same outstanding game we played on consoles, but even more enjoyable thanks to spectacular visuals, masterful optimization and much more suitable controls. [13/2017, p.75]

Play this great shooter with your friends, it pays off. Then it will offer hours and hours of great fun without the stereotype. But be prepared the endgame will thoroughly test your patience and willingness to grind. [Issue#280]
