It's obvious to anyone that the complexity of storyline and mechanics are improved by far compared to any previous entry. I'd also like to say that time travel mechanics and storylines involved with such mechanics are my absolute favorites. I know just enough about theoretical physics that I can argue theoretical applications of them (note that I did say theoretically argue) so the fact that, while simplistic, their idea of how time travel would work in Deponia was neat and didn't involve any of the moronic staple rules of most, like running into your old self tearing the fabric of reality, etc.

If it were just about how well they designed the game, it would be a clear 10; however there is one massive problem: nothing happens. You go through the entire game to "change" the ending (I felt the old ending was fitting) only to realize that the last 12 hours or so you just spent have not only changed nothing, but also trapped alternative reality versions of yourself and stranded them.

I don't have a problem with sad endings, all things in time must end. However, the point of a video game is to tell a story that you, the player, can influence and only with your influence can a resolution be met. In this case however, the game basically says that nothing you do matters, and go and **** off.

To that point, there is no actual resolution to meet; the conditions from the start and the end of the game are exactly the same in which Rufus must plummet to his demise. There's even the whole side-plot of the Rufus that hides in the luggage of the time machine and does nothing but waste time with his story.

So I have to say, what's the point of a game without resolution? Game Three ended with "Sure you died but you saved Deponia!" but this one ends with "Sure you died several times more, but you...uh...well you didn't **** things up....?"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate it when people give low scores because they did not like the ending (like many did with Mass effect 3). You played it til the end so have the decency to give the game credit for that. Seems very immature to me. It makes user rating obsolet when you rate it 0 because you do not like 1 thing.
For me I did not like two things. First there was one puzzle which you had to solve by doing something which was normally not possible. The second thing was some puzzles had to be solved under time pressure. That was really annoying for me. You had to constantly save and load the game which in my opinion is not the way to play an adventure. Then at least add Quicksave and Quickload to the game. But I do not see the point in that anyway. But if you a fan of Deponia you should play it anyway. Maybe its just me.

    Gameplay

Deponia Doomsday's gameplay is the exact same as every other Deponia’s gameplay - as in, it is very simple in concept - you just click. However, the fact that one needs to click is not indicative of the way the game is played - it is not a game for the reptile brain, it is a game for the other type of brain - the smart one. You need to utilize your smarts, which, let's face it, will not be enough to deal with some of the unreasonably complicated puzzles found within, and so you will look up a guide, which is a 100% legitimate way of playing through, and you can not tell me otherwise.

However, there might be some galaxy-brained sodomites among you who will throw themselves at this and try to bash their heads against the walls - enjoy it, and then suffer for it. The playtime I have on my account is that large, because I played it around 5 times, to get all the achievements. It would be that great if I had not used some guides to make the experience more pleasant. 2/3

    Presentation

The game looks very nice. Due to the fact that its appearance is as stylized as some of the unmentionable sources of entertainment, originating in Japan, I am left pleased by the cartoony appearance of the characters. It is interesting how the characters seem to POP from the background, due to the fact that the lines outlining them are much thicker than those of the scenery, but that is excusable and makes it easier to spot important people.

The sound effects are passable, the music is decent enough, but it becomes boring very quickly. The voice acting is good, but the animations are really, really distracting. There are songs intertwined with the beginning of every act, but they really ripped me out of the experience and completely broke my immersion. The singing was not that good either, nor was the text interesting, as a norm. There were outliers.

The art is the one thing I can not really complain about, so kudos to whoever worked on it. Daedalic, stick to illustrations and world building! 2/3

    Story

The story of Deponia Doomsday is quite convoluted, but, alas, not good. The characters are unlikable, made even more so infuriating by the circumstances of… Flashbacks? The game taking place before the first Deponia? Due to the presence of dimension hopping and time travel? The character development that we had gotten from Rufus is completely nullified. It’s gone. Nada.

Ah yes, Rufus - that’s the main character, an entitled, rude, unwashed, selfish and egotistical prick, the exact same idiot from before the last three games… But he’s just like the guy in the first two games. The story takes place a few days or weeks or months before the events described in Deponia, because Rufus is still Toni’s boyfriend.

The story this time starts off with an old Rufus in the distant future dealing with issues and solving problems, as he does. Then, a flashback occurs, or the first section (that being old Rufus) is utilized in a retrospective manner, which is quite nice, even though the events that transpire in it are ones that have yet to happen, so, perhaps, the whole game is a retrospection, although the events that transpire make the future described in the opening sequence… Not an accurate representation of the actual future?

This Deponia installment is actually almost freed of contrivances… Except, of course, that it isn’t. Elephants, in all their forms, are horribly ridiculous in this game. So much so, in fact, that they are responsible for most, if not all, of the plot contrivances. Some old characters reappear and seem to have undergone their own types of character development, which, mind you, make no sense when the player takes into account the interactions between said characters and other characters, observed so far in the previous installments.

Alas, it is quite saddening and disappointing, although the use of time travel was relatively pleasant. 1/3

    Legendary Point

Does this game, that is really just a clicking simulator with a disgusting story, get the Legendary Point? Heck no, this ain't a charity, folks.

    Conclusion

5/10. It's just an average game, one I would not recommend. Do watch a playthrough of it on some website, preferably YouTube and my channel, because the story is actually novel enough to be able to warrant at least that.

On the wall of shame, I hang this game.

Doomsday is not as good as previous Deponias – not as funny (but still funny enough), considerably easier and heavier on mindless minigames. [05/2016, p.58]

Faint return of the popular adventure series. Deponia still charms with its original concept and humor …and even Rufus lost none of his charm. The devs from of Daedalic bring us an adventure that is good only with its story, but not with a gameplay.

Overall, Deponia Doomsday is an expertly-crafted point and click that holds itself to pretty high standards.
