Has atleast 15 hours of gameplay. Charming art syle reminds me of Windwaker with combat that is somewhere in between a Souls game and a Zelda game.

I never played The Legend of Zelda as a kid so I feel like this game more than makes up for it as an adult. Wonderful smooth gameplay, puzzles and combat. Art style is fantastic and the music is just so well done. Just make sure ya got a controller! 10/10

The characters are interesting, the combat is engaging, the artstyle is gorgeous, and the exploration is very satisfying (with lots of secrets and intricate puzzles to solve!). You can feel a great attention to detail everywhere. The bosses and enemies are well crafted and varied, keeping you on your toes during combat without ever becoming too difficult. In fact, the difficulty of everything (fighting, puzzles, etc.) is insanely well balanced and fair. Oh, and the music! THE MUSIC!!!

The game could be described as a mix of Zelda, Ori, and Dark Souls (sprinkled with bits of mystery solving!) but really finds a way to be unique. It's one of those gems that make you go "ah HA!" all the time as you figure stuff out.. so it's hard to put the controller down :P It's just that fun.

    Highly recommend!

This game is excellent. The gameplay is fun and the music is splendid. Unfortunately, I think that they could add more weapons and powers, taking into account that there are many types of enemies. I totally recommend this game.

This is the type of game that pretty much no one will dislike. Besides the review before mine from the person who has never given a game more than three points except for Pathologic 2 which they readily called "unfun" but still gave a ten. So I don't know if I'd necessarily listen to that person.

Anyways, this game is just rock solid in what it wants to do and executes it wonderfully.

Anyways, this game is just rock solid in what it wants to do and executes it wonderfully. It's not reinventing the wheel but it doesn't have to. Pleasing low-poly graphics that still look great and have a kind of matte quality to them. Great music. A simple story that does enough. Fun combat/exploration/puzzle gameplay. Decent level of challenge that ramps up as you go along but won't be too hard even for people who don't play tons of similar games.

I feel like this is the kind of game that no one will review worse than a 6/10 or higher than a 9/10. That's its natural range, which means it's a pretty damn good game. It's also priced appropriately for what you get, releasing at 20 dollars. Get it and enjoy the exploration, combat, and characters for about 14-20 hours.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For starters, Death's Door is an excellent action-adventure game.

The game delivers the feel of being helpless at first with nothing but you and your sword that is severely under-leveled. The upgrade system is fairly decent, and although I could have liked 1 more slot that cost 5K in souls points, it's still very decent and rewarding.

The bosses are uniquely designed to be interesting and fairly challenging, which allows for an in-depth fight rather than being shallow short-sided.

The game rewards the player for completing enemy clear challenges to get an upgrade for the dungeon or part of the level in order to progress. I feel as if this portion could be easily found within the level that's needing it rather than booting the player to the hub world to go and get to it.

While most of the effort is put into getting more upgrades to defeat enemies easier, it's a lot easier to just find a grind spot and keep killing the same enemies over and over to get the required souls you needed, and this is where I feel like the game could be falling short. Instead of having the player grind for the upgrade, make the main enemies a little tougher and give a better soul reward for killing them.

One of the drawbacks that I felt towards the game was the hit detection and invulnerability frames, it just seems like there is none, and I get that the player is allowed to roll out of danger, but, it feels almost impossible at times to get out of the way, and before your last hit gets registered, you are just open to another hit practically right away.

At the end of the day, it's still rewarding, it's still fulfilling & it's still fun to play this game, although it does have some faults, and I do want to keep those as faults, it's not a bad game, and it's worth $20 for a nice 12-15 hr game.

    tl;dr
    Pros:
    -Fun and Rewarding
    -Challenging but not Brutal

    Cons:
-No I-Frames for Extra Reaction Time
-Required Quest Items Not Located In Level, but, in Hub World

    Overall rating: 8/10

Barely 15 minutes in and I was hooked right until the end. Rarely a game that presents so simple, delivers such depth. Just the perfect level of difficulty to punish you for mistiming and mistakes, but not to make you walk away in disgust. The humour throughout is charming too. An absolute gem of a game.

However I absolutely adore this game. Tonally I enjoy the whimsy mixed with dark sensibilities, I honestly wish there were more story beats to the game because I greatly enjoyed the writing. In a couple of the boss areas the bosses make multiple appearances to talk to you and that gives them so much more personality. The gameplay has been "meh"ed. (Yes, I used "meh" as a verb). I very much disagree with that sentiment. When people say that they are saying there isn't much innovation in the gameplay from start to finish. Which is completely true. You do get extra abilities but they are more for puzzle solving and getting around/through terrain. However the combat is very solid and challenging at times. My right hand thumb is in quite sore from the tension of those boss fights and room challenges.

DETAILS: You are a silent protagonist , a crow tasked with soul retrieval. In the very beginning you lose a soul and essentially you will die eventually unless you get it back. Also you in an afterworld of sorts? Maybe this is purgatory? I'm not exactly sure. In order to get it back you need to open death's door which only the power of three giant souls will accomplish. The checkpoint system is very well done imo. Your hub area, where you upgrade stuff and occasionally find story side information in is linked to the explorey/fighty world by doors that you uncover as you travel. Between uncovering doors the area between doors is shortened by releasing gates/ladders/etc so if you die it doesn't take too much time to get back to where you were. Also there is no map, which I am told is a Dark Souls thing. This isn't too frustrating as the world feels connected enough for it to be memorable. However because there are some metroidvania elements it would have been nice to mark places you want to go back to once you get the upgrades to traverse the area. Also, the game uses terminology "North, West, etc" but it's a little confusing to tell where directions are because there is no compass and the world is on an angle. It's not super confusing. You can figure out that North is actually Northwest on your screen. Just an itty bitty gripe.

Overall I highly recommend this game. Definitely going on my top favorite games of all time somewhere.

The combat could be deeper and more nuanced, the weapons could be more varied, the items you pick up could have more functions, the characters you meet could have more to say and more quests, the end-end game could offer more reward.. there are a few things which might be improved here.

But as I understand it the game was mostly made by two guys and a bunch of freelancers, and for that size of a team what they've accomplished is quite impressive. The world is charming, the characters are original and the story is well made. People who like exploring, figuring out how things work, discovering secrets and uncovering a mystery should find this game quite rewarding.

In short it's a beautiful and polished little game, and it is has a great score too. If you like games such as Bastion, Hades, Zelda etc I think you'll find this one well worth your time.

First youre equipped with a sword, you go through this door and youre off on your adventure..
One that is highly skill based, this game is difficult, it will test you.. but it’s a fun difficult, it isn’t frustrating.. Deaths Door is highly beatable with patience.. you kill enemies, youl lfind keyholes that you can activate creating a door or a checkpoint, you can go through this door to regain your health as well as spend your collected souls on upgrading you character, making them stronger or faster, youll be going through what feels like convoluted mazes, again collecting souls, throwing switches, youll find seeds that you can plant in these pots to regain health as well, but if you die you restart at the last door you opened.. which thankfully isn’t too far away.. the game does a great job at spacing these doors out and allowing you to unlock shortcuts as you progress souls style.. and thankfully you do keep all of your souls even if you die, you don’t have to go recollect them.. but this game is great, its fast, its fluent, it demands patience, it demands learning enemies and their attack patterns.. never feeling cheap except for one enemy you fight a couple of times… that enemy is garbage and feels almost random.. but other than him, I loved deaths door, I loved climbing through these dungeons, collecting souls, freeing trapped souls, taking down bosses, getting to the games main targets, all of which are filled with such great charm, this is a really great world put together here.. my only gripe with deaths door however is just how in general “linear” has become a word of sin in the games industry and indie teams cant help themselves but make every level of every game feel like a giant overwhelming puzzle and maze.. and deaths door is no exception.. im fine with climbing ladders, figuring out routes, breaking walls, creating shortcuts, collecting keys, unlocking gates, backtrack and do what I have to do.. but when that’s the entire game, its exhausting, its tiring, it discourages me from wanting to press on… I need a break.. give me just one linear section now and then, please.. I have a tiny brain, I cant be doing puzzles and mazes for 10 hours straight, I nearly died myself.
Jokes aside, Deaths Door is a really special game that deserves your attention, but be warned, there will be moments if youre anything like me, where the game will just throw up on your screen and overwhelm you with all there seems to do to be able to move on.. and a lack of any sort of map doesn’t help in this feeling..
    I give Deaths Door
    an 8/10

Death's Door builds a world that fully engages players in exploration, and it looks somewhat like an excellent fusion of The Legend of Zelda and Dark Souls series. Although the ability design of this game is somewhat lacking in new ideas and the volume of levels is slightly insufficient, it is an excellent work that cannot be missed for any fan of independent games.

From the distinct, sprawling domains of your three primary marks, to the adorably avian way your crow tilts and juts their head around, the game never misses a moment to delight you with some new wonder, and just when you think it’s run out of surprises; whether it’s a new tune, a beautiful vignette, or a quiet moment of empathy, it’s always got something else tucked underneath its wing.
