Dark Souls' world and progression is unlike any other game and works so well in every way. The same cannot be said for the second half unfortunately, which feels rushed and nowhere near as jam packed with content as the first half. Nevertheless its an amazing game.

This is a great game that will test your patience and will give you the upmost satisfaction (in more ways than one when you get to the blight town boss) when beating that tough boss. Great PC port and would recommend to anyone who is really trying to get their moneys worth when it comes to hours you are going to put into the game.

The quiet, tragic, story is slowly drip fed throughout the game and hits you right in the feels at times once you put everything together. Dark souls is a once in a generation experience and deserves every amounts of praise it gets. Expand

One of the best designed worlds in gaming, the interconnectivity of the areas is unmatched by every game that came after it. Unfortunately, after Anor Londo the game takes a nosedive into mediocrity until the amazing ending.

Because if someone had given me this tip before I started the game, I would have been much less nervous while playing the game. Start the game with pyromancy and improve on the magic feature. I can talk for hours about this game and I want to talk. But what I want more than talk is my desire to stop writing as soon as possible and return to the game. Although I have finished it many times, I am dying to experience the same tension over and over.

Coming from Dark Souls 3, this game was unexpectedly difficult for me to get into. The lack of strafe running, slower combat, and narrow corridors (just to name a few) made the first 10 hours of this game a nightmare. There's a certain charm to this game compared to DS3 that I can't describe, and I can see why people call this the best souls game. There is a large variety of areas and terrifying bosses, and the way each area connects to one another is ingenious. The DLC has a good amount of content, and just when you thought the bosses were getting easier they throw in 3 nightmare-difficulty bosses.

Overall, there are some design flaws which I feel only exist to annoy the player. I can't give this a perfect score, but I can see there was a lot of heart poured into this game.

Great design of the world, armor, weapons, opponents and, of course, bosses. A wonderful soundtrack that will not leave anyone indifferent. However, if you have played the first Dark Souls, then it is not necessary to buy a Remaster as here you will not find any essential changes.

But game's extra features and designs like equip weight, poise, damage scaling against stats makes this mechanics delightful. With the help of these game design features and gorgeous atmosphere, Game's mechanics feels so unique and comfortable.
Dark souls 1's level design is a masterpiece. There is no map in these game and even there is no guide to find the way. The game immerses the player in a strange world and waits for the player to find their way. During this journey, the player is not guided by game as much as possible. Actually, it's really hard to learn the whole map at first. I restarted the game about 7 times to memorize all the corners of the map. But once the memorize all the map, all the places in the game seems like home, and this feeling might be one of the best satisfaction in a game.
Game has a beautiful lore in background. But game's storytelling choices are a little complex. It is really hard to follow game's story without searching on internet. Player have to collect nearly all the items and reading their description to have a clue for this world. It is really hard because as i said, game doesn't provides any support to discovering all the map. And in this situation it is really easy to miss items. Besides the player has to talk all the npc and also this is really hard because most actions player caused, effects npcs.
So, dark souls is a masterpiece for hardcore gamers.

    * This review is based on the updates of the game featured in the Remastered version (2018)
    * If it wasn’t obvious, this review doesn’t take into consideration the impact that the game had on the industry or the internet in general

    Pro:
+ The first half of the game is near perfection
+ Huge amount of possible and viable builds
+ Starting class is just a “starting point” and it doesn’t preclude anything in the rest of the game
+ Absolutely amazing level design and areas interconnection in the first half
    + Various weapons’ moveset
    + Good game balance
    + Really good lore
+ Good division on the amount of mandatory and optional areas and bosses
+ Extremely good cohesion between gameplay and narrative
+ Beating adversities awards the player with souls, shortcuts or good equipment
    + Incredibly balanced combat system
+ Most of enemies’ moveset is clear and they have both the possibility to be learned by heart and/or to react by instinct
+ The game can be faced through many possible paths
+ It is possible to beat every boss and area both by pure skill (even at level 1) and by farming becoming over-leveled
+ Good world and environmental design
+ The game allows for a way to recuperate lost key items due to bugs and also to return to a safe place (in case of bugged geodatas) by using an item or by exiting and re-entering the game
+ Visual clues for every trap
+ Possibility to cooperate in order to face areas and bosses with other players or, if played offline, NPCs
+ Features in-game the possibility to play offline
+ Finishing NPCs quests in different ways leads to different rewards
    + Great attention to details

    Cons:
    - One of the worst tutorials I’ve ever seen in modern games, with many important information completely missing
    - Most of the second half of the game is extremely bad in terms of level design (with basically no interconnection between areas), enemies and bosses
    - The lack of a weapon evolution tree makes pretty complex to know what you need to obtain a certain power up of a weapon
    - Ordering in menus is by category and alphabetically, but based on japanese names, thus not making any sense in other languages
    - No possibility to pause the game even when playing offline
    - No possibility to save and reload as you want
    - The game doesn’t give clear path directions to new players
    - Inconsistencies in what a button does in the different menus
    - Sometimes, hidden affordance
    - Some actions don’t have a good feedback (like the crow’s nest)
    - Some geodatas really suck (I’m looking at you, Great Hollow)
    - Understanding how to enter the DLC without a guide is an extreme challenge on its own
    - NG+ starts automatically after defeating the final boss
    - Some characters’ quests have terrible triggers, which may lead to losing their entire quest
    - The effect of certain items is not disclosed anywhere, not even in their description
    - A few but annoying bugs

    Miscellanous:
    * If it’s your first Souls-like, it requires time to understand the mechanics and how to play well and proceed in the game, because even though it looks like any other action game, the truth is that it’s in a totally different category of its own.
    * No difficulty settings, but it’s mitigated by the possibility to make the game easier by farming/grinding or harder by playing with certain self–made challenges
    * If played on computer, there is the possibility to use mods to fix certain problems of the game and enhance the experience

1st half was 10/10, but after Anor Londo, the level design and boss quality dropped quite significantly.

Diffiiculty scaling was all over the place in the 2nd half too, therefore 7/10.

DLC was kind of lazy, just an asset flip of Darkroot Basin, but the bosses more than made up for it, so 8/10.

Not one of my favorite. I'm not a big fan of soulsborn anyways. I finished the game. Not too bad combat is really fun even in 2022. Game is not too hard, just overall I'm not a big fan of die bunch of times, get experience and knowledge, try it again, win cycle which is basically soulsborn.

Dark Souls Remastered is a very lazy remaster that no one asked for (meaning that a port of the original game for the current generation is not what we wanted). That being said, this is the best way to play the original Dark Souls game. The minor quality of life changes they made (mainly being able to set a password for multiplayer and being able to select multiple souls at once) really make the "Prepare to Die Edition" obsolete. The small graphical upgrades also make the game a little easier to look at, but at its best still has some beautiful scenes.

I was very upset (and still sort of am) when this Remaster was announced and FromSoft decided not to redo this first game with the Dark Souls 3 / Bloodborne engine. This was an obvious cash grab that was very effective. FromSoft managed to get me to buy this Remastered not once, not twice, but FOUR times (Two copies on PC, one for the Switch, and one for the PS4). With all that being said, this lazy "Remaster" still manages to get the job done and allows anyone to easily access the start of a great series (FromSoft, please give us a lazy Demon's Souls Remaster!)

The original Dark Souls is a game that everyone should play, it is an experience (despite the games major issues and unfinished final half). And like I said, there is no reason you should play the original PTD version of the game now that this version is out. This version of the game is also easier to access for those coming from the later games.

I think the soundtrack is kind of hard to evaluate because it basically only has a boss fight soundtrack, and the boss fights are good. I don't like this 'format' very much. But man the music of the final boss fight is amazing.

But damn, the 'remastered' of the title is almost an embellishment since the game is basically identical to the first game, they didn't fix anything and improved almost nothing.

having finished ds1, i can say that it is a good game. However it is not without flaws because the game certainly has a few. The combat can feel quite slow sometimes and the graphics are not the best. Upgrade paths for weapons are also abit strange and hard to follow. But the world building and interconnectedness is a good feature in the game, you can walk from one end of the map to the other in maybe 20 mins. As the first dark souls game i can see alot of the things that seemed underdeveloped here that were improved upon in dark souls 3. elden ring . even bloodborne and sekiro. It is a pretty alright game but not my favourite in the souls series. I didnt feel that the DLC was worth playing even though i heard good things about it as the game is not that interesting compared to other entries in the series and as a standalone game. 6.8/10

The Soulsborne games I previously played are fun, challenging but fair, whereas I found DS1R quite frustrating and downright tedious at times. It was also extremely convoluted, I have no idea how you'd figure certain things out without a guide, and again that's not something I felt with the newer games. Overall I'm glad I finished it, but I didn't massively enjoy it, if anything it has given me a new appreciation for the later titles, so that's something I guess. Expand

    Complaints
I had some expectations going into this(which you should never do), and because of that, I left the game feeling very disappointed. One of the most disappointing things was the level design. I always heard from everyone how "ingenious", how "amazing", how "insanely awesome" the level design this game had was. However, it must've been nastolgia telling those people that. I haven't seen level design this horrendous in a very long time. I can't tell you how many times the enviornment has gotten me killed. Or how many times I completely missed an area because of poor level design(I would like to again remind you all I have put in 71hrs. I make sure I miss nothing, and I still missed things). While I'm complaing about the level design, I have to mention Lost Izalith and Demon Ruins. These two areas are connected to each other and it feels like the designers gave up halfway through. Demon Ruins has the worst enemy placement in the game with about 12 Taurus Demons and 10 Capra Demons bunched together. This isn't an interesting challenge, it comes across as lazy and uninspired. Lost Izalith is popular with it's poor level design as many people say it's as large as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle. The character control in this game is pretty annoying after playing the newer titles. Unlike in the newer Souls games, your character is slower and responds to player input with slow animations that can easily get you killed. With that being said, the camera comes in the #2 spot for things that got me killed. I can be walking over one of the many narrow walkways in the game and if a wall or arch hits the camera... your character will flick and run right off to their death. Let's get into some PvP complaints starting with the two biggest problems. This game is jam packed with hackers that will invade or summon you, give you an egg head, curse you, get you banned, etc. I figured this remaster would have put some more strict cheat dectection in place, but I guess not. Next is back stabbing, you can say "it's part of Dark Souls 1 and you just need to git gud" all day, but it's broken. My final complaint is of course the bugs and glitches. I wish I had made a list of every bug and glitch I came across, but that would have been too long. One bug that got me killed a ton was clipping though the floor and falling to my death. Another being NPC dialogs getting locked up and unable to continue. Items dropped by killing an enemy have a chance to clip through the floor. Being parried in certain spots(stairs) can make you clip though the floor and fall to your death. There are also a ton of smaller bugs and glitches that I wouldn't say affected my gameplay negatively.

    Praises
Dark Souls has quite a handful of flaws, but it also got a bunch of things right. The biggest thing I love about the Soulsborne games is the setting. The beautiful fantasy world they throw you into and the creatures they have you battle against inspired from shows, movies, books, and ancient lore. The music has always added so much more to each of these games and definiately needs to be praised. The score that begins just as you enter a boss fight always gets you into the moment. The music even tells you a little about the boss you're facing, for example, Gwyn's fight. Unlike most other boss battles in the game, Gwyn's music has more of a sad tone, letting you know that there is a deeper story than just going from area to area killing the boss and progressing, it is the end of a great demigod. A very important aspect of the game is enemies and their variety. I am never disappointed when it comes to the enemies in Soulsborne game. There were a slew of new enemies I have never seen in the other titles in Dark Souls: Remastered. Some like the giant rotting dragons, those disgusting lava fly things in Blighttown, the mini boss Hydras. And finally, I have to mention the combat of Dark Souls. This is now my favorite type of combat system of any game I've played. I know each game has done it slighty differently, but it just feels great. It's hard to explain why I like it so much, I'd just say give it a try.

The game's locations are too complicated. The only good thing is that they are very well thought out. The bosses in the game are easy, absolutely all of them. The only +- difficult boss is Artorias. The plot is not bad, but to get to know it you need to read up on some forums or videos.

Just about worth it at half price and the main reason for that is the game is once again very busy, not because of any remastering that's gone on. A huge huge missed opportunity to make a great game a truly outstanding one. Edit - changed my rating from 7 to 5 after realising the matchmaking system is utterly stupid.

They should have updated the game's combat system to feel as good as Dark Souls 3. The game feels so far behind in terms of gameplay. Besides that issue the game is a nice remaster if you have already enjoyed the game but if you are new then it would be best to avoid since the gameplay difference is huge.

The biggest problems of the game are rare and long ranged from places you die checkpoints, and broken hitboxes, and also complete misunderstanding of what to do in the game: where to go, how to get to, how to kill if invincible, etc... I have decided to buy remaster after long time and play through DS1 again and well...my rose tinted glasses were crushed, this game is bad. Its not about remaster, its about the whole souls series. I dont know if I am getting older or maybe after playing many games I have higher expectations from games, but the game mechanics and design is just plain bad. I love walking through souls worlds, they are beautiful and atmospheric, art style is awesome, sound is great. I love collecting here, leveling and the feel of exploring dangerous world. World is so thought out, interconnected, bonfires distances are okay. Story was always meh in souls series, but exposition in souls series is fun concept, through exploration you find the history of world. But now lets get to what made me just not play any souls game anymore. Game mechanics are just bad, I dont know how I was able to tolerate the you must die mechanics so long, you dont feel like your time is worth investing into these games. Enemies are cheap, there are very few enemies that are actually challenge. Almost every enemy has some kind of almost 1 hit KO and sometimes the mechanics bug out so you actually die in 1 hit.But almost every enemy may be shield up circle strafe backstabbed. There are always extremes nothing between either you completely cheese the enemies or they obliterate you with their secret move they use once in a while. The irony is that you never run out of estus flasks, due to this, its rare for boss fight to end with 0 estus flasks and low hp.They are annoying nothing else, every fight is pray for not bugging out on weird hitboxes, iframes etc. Its just no fun at all because enemies have more advantages than the player. Hell they can hit through walls... Next biggest enemy in this game is camera, oh how I forgot that you have to permafight with the camera. Combat is mediocore, well in past I liked its simplicity that you rely on weapon moveset but what I never liked was the slowness and weirdness of movement, combat and dodging. Its just so slow and illogical, it goes against the player, the only skill is that you have to go against your reflexes to please the game....dodging makes no sense as you have to dodge like 1s after you would dodge using your reflexes. This applies to all souls games.
Traps were worst in DS2 until you didnt knew what trap was there, you died. Even here, you know where the traps are, but even with knowing where the traps are, they are just bad, they just make you annoyed and angry nothing else, exploration excitement is completely killed, because all you are thinking about is great, what will kill me now because souls series are known about dying, so you have to die. And the bosses.... Some are good, look I like ornstein and smough, but even still sometimes game just completely goes out of its way to just kill you to show that you must die. One hit ko attacks, weird hitboxes, clunky attacks, telegraphing and the animations to confuse your reflexes. The combat and enviroments in this game are not built around challenge, but around you dying. Is this fun? I just dont have the patience to ignore the bad in order to enjoy the good. Souls community always sucked because this series was always about elitism nothing else. Maybe I am older and I want to enjoy the game and not prove to myself that I am good. But with this mindset, you cant enjoy the game, as it is made to annoy you, not challenge you. I like challenges but not artificial ones and souls series is all about artificial challenge. All bosses can be cheesed, but even with cheese you may die to some random attack that may one shot you. Or maybe the game just hooks you up as stockholm syndrome victim. But I just dont see the appeal of playing souls series, its just festival of lameness to make you mad. Look I recommend playing the game once and be done with it, never to return to it. The visuals and world is breathtaking if you have the patience to endure this lamefest, you dont need skill, only perseverance and patience. Believe me I completed all aforementioned souls games as pure melee faith build as I always thought that crusader like character fits the narrative, I even didnt used lightning bolts or ranged miracles as I was elitist prick as wanted to finish it pure melee back in the days. Try it once and then forget. I loved souls series, but now I think its extremely overrated as I returned to it after many years. Not a fan of souls series anymore, its just huge times ink with minimum reward.

-Build variety and rpg elements are very well implemented
-The timing in combat is very good and fair (remark "THE TIMING)"
-Very good, immersive and innovative level design, moreso for the time it was released
-I actually like the mechanic of having to clear the whole area before the boss once you died, it makes the game more punishing without ruining the gameplay experience

    The bad:
-One of the worst physic engines ever to be seen in the history of gaming, it makes the game a pain to play with how much what you see is different from what's happening with the hitboxes, to the point where it's plain unfair with bosses like Centipede Demon or Gaping Dragon
-Incredibly outdated and poorly optimized UI, accompanied with some terrible controls
-Ineffective and plain terrible balance, I truly can't understand how trivially easy and simple some bosses are and how infernally unfair some others are (The Gargoyles, also known as: GET GANKED WITH NO COUNTERPLAY, THE BOSS)
-One of the most horrible boss rosters to be witnessed by mankind, the bosses are riddled with problems and terrible design choices that make them disgustingly bad, ranging from the cancerous rng ridden Bed of Chaos and Gwyn (with whom you have to rely on the AI randomly choosing to hit you with the slow attack instead of the fast attack, which is unparryable due to its speed, 8 times in a row after having knocked him to the ground), to bosses which rely on the game's most appaling weakness (PHYSICS) like the Gaping Dragon, Centipede Demon or Seath (boss that actually becomes trivial when you stand on the right spot because you literally become invulnerable to its spikes) to "GET GANKED NERD" territory with nefarious **** like the Four Kings and the Gargoyles (which, don't get me wrong, double bosses are not a bad thing, Ornstein and Smough are actually the only good and well thought-out boss in the game, since they did a good implementation of a 1v2 combat which is at the same time fair and very difficult). Truly 99% of Dark Souls' bosses are appaling, except the aforementioned Ornstein and Smough which is the only good boss, and the Iron Golem, which is fair but its difficulty wasn't implemented to its fullest, making it a trivially easy boss.

Probably the worst sin of this game is being shamelessly blind to its own weaknesses, gameplay choices were made as if the physics motor was actually top-tier, when in reality what you end up with is Queelag dealing you the same damage with its explosion if you're at melee range or at the last pixel of its radius, or the Gaping Dragon doing 3x damage to you when walking with its shamelessly inaccurate hitbox (with my friends we actually call him the shoe box because that) than when he stomps you with his ten thousand teeth.
Dark Souls has the potential to be a good game, but it's a laughably, vomitingly bad product with a few promising glimpses of glory.

Such a disappointment to see that only few things were changed.
Besides the key biding being decent for a pc game, nothing actually changed besides a few textures that look like the original game with 3 or 4 mods.
So much room for potential went missing, such as fixing the backstab in PvP, weapon balancement, some enemies placement...the list goes on. This is a lazy cash grab that

The first Souls Saga game is incredible, but its remastering is somewhat poorly done and does not deliver a good graphic for its launch year "2018", the same game with nothing changed, only a more polished world, could be better .

Dark Souls punishes you for not knowing things you have no way of knowing yet. Punishment is performed by excessively wasting your time.

Things that you have no way of knowing yet but will punish you come in many variants:
    - walking in the wrong direction (wrong-level areas, missing a checkpoint (which are sometimes hidden))
    - traps and ambushes along the way
    - spending exp/souls on bad stats or weapons
    - basic rules of combat (invincibility frames, parrying, invasions, armour usefulness, enemy turn speed, some hitboxes)
    - behaviour of never before encountered enemies
    - enemy weaknesses
    - strategies that feel like they shouldn't be this effective in the first place
    - which enemies to better run past

You'll get punished for not knowing this by either:
    - having to redo the last couple of minutes (this you will spend most of your time on)
    - wasting hours being in an area you have no business being in
    - having a weak character for the rest of the game
    - getting angry for having no way of having knowledge in advance how to circumvent the punishment
    - wondering if the designers of the game are actually trying to make your life worse
    - doubting if trying again is worth your time in the first place

To fill the knowledge gaps needed to succeed you either use trial and error or one of the numerous guides which make most parts of the game easy and which most players seem to use. A big portion of the fun of exploration is destroyed by using guides but there is no fun in unfairly getting punished either so you have to pick your poison. In retrospect I regret not using a guide more willingly because it seems like a requirement to have insider knowledge about some aspects of the game (i.e. finding a certain door). If you look stuff up though then you miss out on probably the best part of the game which is the atmosphere of maneuvering through an unknown, grand and hostile world.

Indeed the game world doesn't want the player to succeed which is surprisingly an interesting concept. It enforces a narrative of the player progressing against all odds by beating monstrous bosses and enduring senseless hardships by strength of will. This is funnily enough the beauty of Dark Souls.
You will encounter a lot of reviews praising its difficulty from players who were captivated by this narrative and somehow didn't mind all those hours wasted by getting unfairly punished. But if you don't need a self-esteem boost or get one by enduring hardships and value your time then I can not recommend this game to you.
Don't let your judgement be clouded by people telling you, you are bad for quitting. They might just be justifying having endured the punishments themselves. Most will quit this game and most will do so for good reasons.

And then they have the NERVE to call it a 'remaster,' cause obviously fixing a game 6 years later makes it a remaster now. And the worst part is they took the original OFF of steam, so if you want to buy it, you gotta pay more money, AND not have access to many mods that were created for the original version. It gets 1 point because it IS an amazing game, but this disgusting lazy $20 patch deserves no more. I mean, come on, at least offer the remastered patch free of charge!

All I can say is, if you want to play Dark Souls Remastered (and never played the original Dark Souls before), you're better off just getting the console versions or wait for the Switch port (like what I'm doing right now, if it's good enough, of course!). Just stay away from the PC port unless if you don't mind re-buying the same thing again.

This Dark Souls Remastered targets people who played the original game on console, or the ones who never played it before. It’s still one of a kind game, but this remastered version is definitely too lazy.
  3. 60
Dark Souls: Remastered can almost barely be considered a remastered title for PC gamers and, while it provides some increase in graphics and quality of life improvements, these additions are largely negligible unless you’re a dedicated multiplayer fan. Despite this fact, Dark Souls is still an amazing game that is worth playing through more than once, and there’s a lot here for gamers who’ve never played through the first title in the Souls series.
