Not one of my favorite. I'm not a big fan of soulsborn anyways. I finished the game. Not too bad combat is really fun even in 2022. Game is not too hard, just overall I'm not a big fan of die bunch of times, get experience and knowledge, try it again, win cycle which is basically soulsborn.

    Complaints
I had some expectations going into this(which you should never do), and because of that, I left the game feeling very disappointed. One of the most disappointing things was the level design. I always heard from everyone how "ingenious", how "amazing", how "insanely awesome" the level design this game had was. However, it must've been nastolgia telling those people that. I haven't seen level design this horrendous in a very long time. I can't tell you how many times the enviornment has gotten me killed. Or how many times I completely missed an area because of poor level design(I would like to again remind you all I have put in 71hrs. I make sure I miss nothing, and I still missed things). While I'm complaing about the level design, I have to mention Lost Izalith and Demon Ruins. These two areas are connected to each other and it feels like the designers gave up halfway through. Demon Ruins has the worst enemy placement in the game with about 12 Taurus Demons and 10 Capra Demons bunched together. This isn't an interesting challenge, it comes across as lazy and uninspired. Lost Izalith is popular with it's poor level design as many people say it's as large as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle. The character control in this game is pretty annoying after playing the newer titles. Unlike in the newer Souls games, your character is slower and responds to player input with slow animations that can easily get you killed. With that being said, the camera comes in the #2 spot for things that got me killed. I can be walking over one of the many narrow walkways in the game and if a wall or arch hits the camera... your character will flick and run right off to their death. Let's get into some PvP complaints starting with the two biggest problems. This game is jam packed with hackers that will invade or summon you, give you an egg head, curse you, get you banned, etc. I figured this remaster would have put some more strict cheat dectection in place, but I guess not. Next is back stabbing, you can say "it's part of Dark Souls 1 and you just need to git gud" all day, but it's broken. My final complaint is of course the bugs and glitches. I wish I had made a list of every bug and glitch I came across, but that would have been too long. One bug that got me killed a ton was clipping though the floor and falling to my death. Another being NPC dialogs getting locked up and unable to continue. Items dropped by killing an enemy have a chance to clip through the floor. Being parried in certain spots(stairs) can make you clip though the floor and fall to your death. There are also a ton of smaller bugs and glitches that I wouldn't say affected my gameplay negatively.

    Praises
Dark Souls has quite a handful of flaws, but it also got a bunch of things right. The biggest thing I love about the Soulsborne games is the setting. The beautiful fantasy world they throw you into and the creatures they have you battle against inspired from shows, movies, books, and ancient lore. The music has always added so much more to each of these games and definiately needs to be praised. The score that begins just as you enter a boss fight always gets you into the moment. The music even tells you a little about the boss you're facing, for example, Gwyn's fight. Unlike most other boss battles in the game, Gwyn's music has more of a sad tone, letting you know that there is a deeper story than just going from area to area killing the boss and progressing, it is the end of a great demigod. A very important aspect of the game is enemies and their variety. I am never disappointed when it comes to the enemies in Soulsborne game. There were a slew of new enemies I have never seen in the other titles in Dark Souls: Remastered. Some like the giant rotting dragons, those disgusting lava fly things in Blighttown, the mini boss Hydras. And finally, I have to mention the combat of Dark Souls. This is now my favorite type of combat system of any game I've played. I know each game has done it slighty differently, but it just feels great. It's hard to explain why I like it so much, I'd just say give it a try.

Just about worth it at half price and the main reason for that is the game is once again very busy, not because of any remastering that's gone on. A huge huge missed opportunity to make a great game a truly outstanding one. Edit - changed my rating from 7 to 5 after realising the matchmaking system is utterly stupid.

This port is for anyone who doesn't own the original, or played later games but not the first one. If you are in either category, then this would be a good opportunity to see what made the first game so good.

BUT! This is a **** port regardless. Anyone who owns the previous version knows about the dsfix and the improvement it and other visual mods can bring. This is more of an update

Great game but not so good remaster. Minor changes when compared to original, on PC visuals are only slightly improved.
During my playthrough I had real trouble finding someone for coop after first few levels. Only invaders with well optimized and PvP focused characters. Much easier to find someone in DS3.
It is worth giving it a try if you haven't played it before or want to refresh

They should have updated the game's combat system to feel as good as Dark Souls 3. The game feels so far behind in terms of gameplay. Besides that issue the game is a nice remaster if you have already enjoyed the game but if you are new then it would be best to avoid since the gameplay difference is huge.

I never played the original and with Elden Ring coming out soon I thought that this was the perfect time to experience the first game. Completing DS2, DS3 and Bloodborne before reaching this Remaster definitely hurt it, it really does look and feel like a first draft. I found it had glimpses of that Dark Souls magic but the developers hadn't quite nailed the formula yet. I found it had glimpses of that Dark Souls magic but the developers hadn't quite nailed the formula yet. The Soulsborne games I previously played are fun, challenging but fair, whereas I found DS1R quite frustrating and downright tedious at times. It was also extremely convoluted, I have no idea how you'd figure certain things out without a guide, and again that's not something I felt with the newer games. Overall I'm glad I finished it, but I didn't massively enjoy it, if anything it has given me a new appreciation for the later titles, so that's something I guess. Expand

That being said, this is the best way to play the original Dark Souls game. The minor quality of life changes they made (mainly being able to set a password for multiplayer and being able to select multiple souls at once) really make the "Prepare to Die Edition" obsolete. The small graphical upgrades also make the game a little easier to look at, but at its best still has some beautiful scenes.

I was very upset (and still sort of am) when this Remaster was announced and FromSoft decided not to redo this first game with the Dark Souls 3 / Bloodborne engine. This was an obvious cash grab that was very effective. FromSoft managed to get me to buy this Remastered not once, not twice, but FOUR times (Two copies on PC, one for the Switch, and one for the PS4). With all that being said, this lazy "Remaster" still manages to get the job done and allows anyone to easily access the start of a great series (FromSoft, please give us a lazy Demon's Souls Remaster!)

The original Dark Souls is a game that everyone should play, it is an experience (despite the games major issues and unfinished final half). And like I said, there is no reason you should play the original PTD version of the game now that this version is out. This version of the game is also easier to access for those coming from the later games.

I thought that not having the teleport until Anor Londo was very fine, since the shortcuts and such manage to keep the exploration and backtracking very good until then.

I think the soundtrack is kind of hard to evaluate because it basically only has a boss fight soundtrack, and the boss fights are good. I don't like this 'format' very much. But man the music of the final boss fight is amazing.

But damn, the 'remastered' of the title is almost an embellishment since the game is basically identical to the first game, they didn't fix anything and improved almost nothing.

The biggest problems of the game are rare and long ranged from places you die checkpoints, and broken hitboxes, and also complete misunderstanding of what to do in the game: where to go, how to get to, how to kill if invincible, etc... It made my walkthrough 5x times longer (60 hours in. Nerves are dead)

having finished ds1, i can say that it is a good game. However it is not without flaws because the game certainly has a few. The combat can feel quite slow sometimes and the graphics are not the best. Upgrade paths for weapons are also abit strange and hard to follow. But the world building and interconnectedness is a good feature in the game, you can walk from one end of the map to the other in maybe 20 mins. As the first dark souls game i can see alot of the things that seemed underdeveloped here that were improved upon in dark souls 3. elden ring . even bloodborne and sekiro. It is a pretty alright game but not my favourite in the souls series. I didnt feel that the DLC was worth playing even though i heard good things about it as the game is not that interesting compared to other entries in the series and as a standalone game. 6.8/10

Dark Souls: Remastered can almost barely be considered a remastered title for PC gamers and, while it provides some increase in graphics and quality of life improvements, these additions are largely negligible unless you’re a dedicated multiplayer fan. Despite this fact, Dark Souls is still an amazing game that is worth playing through more than once, and there’s a lot here for gamers who’ve never played through the first title in the Souls series.
