Jul 8, 2025Occasionally clunky controls and cryptic progression keep Chronicles of the Wolf from reaching true greatness, but it remains an excellent old-school metroidvania and a heartfelt tribute to Konami’s Igavanias. Long, challenging in all the right ways, and consistently fun, with top-notch presentation and a superb soundtrack; hard to ask for much more.

Jun 16, 2025Fans of Castlevania will absolutely lap this Chronicles of the Wolf, as it is basically a member of that storied lineage in all but name.
-
Jun 24, 2025Chronicles of the Wolf gets almost everything right in what it sets out to do. Despite its clear inspiration from Castlevania, it manages to establish its own identity, delivering a challenging, lengthy game filled with secrets and a thunderous soundtrack. For better or worse, it’s a classic adventure against darkness just like in the old days — and certainly one of the best of its kind.

Jan 5, 2026Chronicles of the Wolf is a treat for fans of classic 2D Castlevania games, offering a richly detailed world and a strong sense of old-school atmosphere. While its exploration and presentation shine, the game keeps the challenge level relatively low and brings few innovations compared to modern metroidvanias. A nostalgic experience best suited for longtime genre devotees rather than players seeking fast-paced or experimental design.
-
Jun 23, 2025An atmospheric metroidvania steeped in historical fiction, Chronicles of the Wolf delivers gothic ambiance and a reverential nod to early Castlevanias. Although some stiff controls and pacing hiccups dull this wolf’s claws, there’s still plenty of ferocity lurking in these depths.
-
Jun 24, 2025As a throwback to the old 2D Castlevania games, Chronicles of the Wolf is serviceable and mostly effective. If you’re after a nostalgia trip that doesn’t have many ambitions to forge its own identity or take note of the quality of life improvements that metroidvanias have been honing since the 1990s, Chronicles of the Wolf will be a satisfying romp through the French countryside. However, the game isn’t aspiring to anything more than a simple trip down memory lane, and would be hard to recommend for anyone not already a Castlevania fan or looking for something that evolves on past Metroidvanias rather than simply imitating them.

Aug 11, 2025Strangely enough, Chronicles of the Wolf takes inspiration from Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, arguably the weakest 2D entry in the series. It’s not much of a surprise, then, that the map design falls short of the genre’s best, requiring a lot of tiring backtracking, even by Metroidvania standards. The pixel art is certainly charming, but overall this is not quite a memorable ode to a legendary series.
