I really enjoyed the single player campaign in MW3. It kept my attention and offered enough challenge to want to play it to the finish. Before I start, I gave this game a four because of my disappointment in the game compared to the hype and everything else they should have learned from their previous games. If this was the first game in the franchise, and it wasn't just a juggernaut to make Activision money then this game would get a 7 from me, because in gameplay and everything, its a decent game. Fun, but not to fun or innovative. But since they got rid of some of the new things black ops added and just pretty much did the same thing as MW2, just some new perks and killstreaks, I gave it a lower score. Don't be fooled, if you played MW2, you played this game, same lone wolf style multiplayer (unless you make your own team with friends or a clan), same formula on the campaign except now its getting predictable and boring, and really rushed. Nothing changed, they hyped it up and people bought it. And now people can see that it is stupid, which is why people came here like me to put a bad review on it. Me and the other 3,437 people. I like more of a thinking mans fps, I like to have a lot of communication when I play online and strategies. Multiplayer on this came is all about how you yourself can be better, and not what you can do to help the team and win, its all about YOUR Kill death ratio, and things like that. So I would much rather play Battlefield 3 which has a lot more strategy to it. More thinking. But don't get me wrong, I have a place for these games, I get bored and just want to run around a knife some people without thinking too. Which this game does well, but thats about it. If thats all you want then go buy this game. But for me, and some others, we want more, not the same game every year, with a new case for 60$. Expand

Decent game, unfortunately its largely just a remake of modern warfare 2 with some slight tweaks. The single player is action-packed but fairly generic. If you bought this for the multiplayer you will probably be disappointed. It lacks any new features, the maps are rather boring and its absolutely packed with hackers ruining it for everyone.

In short-disappointing. I am not really sure what they were thinking about releasing this. Look at the Elder Scrolls series. The games get progressively better. CoD takes a few steps back with this game. My opinion is to save your money and skip this title.

Contrary to those who trashed this game without even playing it, I decided to write a balanced review after splashing out on it and putting in some hours.

MW3 has a decent single player campaign (although typically short and linear) and reasonable co-op modes, but for me (and most players), it shall be judged upon its multiplayer mode. Now I don't care that it's similar to the last game (why change a formula which is good?), but several key problems crop up. Probably the same things as everyone else, but never mind (do you get it yet, IW/Sledgehammer/Activision?). They are:

    - No Field of View (FOV) setting in the menu. I dont suffer from motion sickness, but prefer a higher FOV and this game can be a bit disorienting because of the tunnel vision of the narrow forced setting.

    - The maps are rather small, and feel rather "samey". Think Favela from MW2, or Showdown from MW. Like Overgrown from MW and MW2? Forget it - nothing that big here.

    - Some of the weapons seriously need to be balanced better (twin machine pistols are back!!!).

    - The matchmaking is rubbish, seemingly even worse than in MW2! Dedicated servers were put in the game, following the outcry after MW2, but guess what, they're unranked, rendering them pointless to the millions of gamers who play for the rewards of unlocks etc.

Once again, this should've been a return to form for the CoD franchise, but I'm left disappointed. It's perhaps unfair to blame the developers - they've probably been driven to the wall by Activision to get the game out on time, and reduced their efforts on the PC to get the lucrative console stuff up to scratch.

This is by far the most disappointing game yet. At least when they made MW2 they added heaps of new things to improve from the original MW, but IMO they also took a lot away from it. Things like lobbys, host changes and the lack of dedicated servers really put me of MW2 'cause I'd find myself spending more time waiting to play then I would actually playing. So when they announced before the release of MW3 that they were bringing back dedicated servers I thought, "Cool this might be alright". I was wrong.
MW3 is exactly the same as MW2, I don't mean it's similar, IT'S THE EXACT SAME GAME! I mean c'mon they've had two years between titles and yet there's nothing innovative at all.
I used to spend hours each day playing the original MW online, then I played MW2 casually for a few months but with MW3 I was over it in about 2 hours.
I then thought ok, I'll play the single player campaign, that'll be entertaining for a few hours or so. Wrong again, although I don't have a problem with the single player mode, I mean COD is COD. I got a few missions into it and then recieved an error which 'caused the game to crash each time I reached a certain point. I couldn't find any way around it so after a couple of weeks I had no need for this game at all and traded it in.

So I would have to say for a game that's gloating about how many copies they have sold, I would have thought they would have released a game that was A) not a copy and paste of the previous title and B) at least have the game ready to play.
Every title released since COD4 would be better of as a DLC package I can't see how any of them can warrant a full title release.
I hate COD I will never buy it again and wished I'd never spent money on this piece of crap. I realise that giving it a 0 might seem a bit harsh but so is asking for $89 for a game I already brought 2 years ago.

But in MW3 all maps feel like you move in a small box.. It's all made for running and spamming.
You are able to quickscope but maps and also the whole rest of the game clearly isn't designed for sniping at all.
For example.. There is a perk called "Stalker" which allows the player to move with normal run-speed while aiming down the sight. There is no bobbing or increased inaccuracy. In my opinion this makes rifles and smgs really overpowered since it's a lot easier to rush other players (snipers).
Akimbo- weapons are stronger than ever (since they have ultimate range and precision now.. )
I think it's very good that there is no adjustable FOV since everybody has the same chance of spotting enemies now --> A fairer game where you have to be really attentive. All in all I rate it 2 because it's not as good as MW2 or MW1 at all. It's just a poorly thought-out and unbalanced spam-fest.

So about the game. The graphics were basically the same as mw2 (slightly updated cod4 engine), every gun in the game felt like a weak bb gun, every level was the exact same thing, start on one end and fight endless waves of bots that cant aim to the other end, while a huge building or some other catastrophic event happens then you go into countless quick-time events, constantly being yelled at to "HURRY" "MOVE MOVE". Whoever is writing these game scripts for the last few games needs to realize that making every level a huge "rush" mission with all sorts of buildings collapsing or things blowing up doesn't make an epic story, you need the slower "calming down back under control" points to make the "epic everything is blowing up" missions more memorable (emotional roller coaster / Calm before the storm) And besides the whole mess with the story, the entire game is filled with these stupid quick-time events, you know, press X to save the world, it seems like to many modern shooter games have been made for people that like to play "Whack A Mole" on there desk, just get 3 large buttons and a mallot and wait for one of those quick-time events and you should finish the game in about 4 hours, (Yes, that's it, 4 hours...)

I Personally can't wait to see what Jason West and Vince Zampella (the original creators of infinity ward (call of duty), both fired during mw2's creation) are up to over at Respawn Entertainment (Google it) Because I cant see Call of Duty returning to its glory days anymore, another AMAZING franchise consumed by console'tards (PLEASE GET US OUT OF THE MIDDLE EAST RESPAWN ENTERTAINMENT!!! make up some fake post WW2 game, and keep it PC FTW)

MW3 has a lot of new stuff. Like, say, new maps. Most of the maps in MP are balanced and fun. MW3 also has none of the balancing issues MW2 had (except Akimbo FMG9, but isn't nearly as bad as OMA Noobtubing). You've also got tons of new weapons, with fresh models and animations. True, the graphics haven't changed at all. But MW2's (and MW3s) graphics are fine to begin with. Maybe not as good as BF3s, but this also enables users with lower end rigs to play it just fine. Matchmaking returning is a bit disappointing for PC, but by no means is it that bad. Just make sure you stay under 125 ping matches. Unranked servers are of course included, so if you want to play CG Rules SnD or something, you can. Course, MW3 isn't all about MP. The Singelplayer campaign was fun (albeit a little short), and Spec Ops is more fun than ever, especially in Survival mode. Overall, MW3 is a well rounded and great game. Its loads of fun, especially with friends in a Party. Just one note: don't expect it to be one of those immersive, "6 hour sessions at a time" games like Skyrim. MW3 is great for a quick burst of frenzied fun for around 2 or 3 hours. Then, have a rest or go play BF3 or something.

Graphics and Game engine are old and starting to really show it's age. For $60 or if you got suckered into Call of Duty Elite $100+, its really not worth it for it's price. What would have been considered an Expansion Pack had this game been released 8 years ago would have been priced at $19.99 or even $29.99 which would have been more excusable that it being $60 to $100. This was basically a way for Bobby Kotick to make millions off of with very little development time involved for a big pay out with very little care to the community that helped "Build" the franchise name. I am very very upset when I saw mw3. singleplayer consisted of a corridor with 2-3 shelters, each scene was scripted and the player can`t take no part in it, all that was required from the player - it's kill the stupid bots in the hallway. no diversity. also disappointed many of the details, just copied from the previous parts of the game. it seems that the developers were too lazy to do mw3.

    - No text chat or voice comms in SpecOps
    - No ranked dedicated servers
    - No massive changes to gameplay in multiplayer, just tweaks like an anual sports game. - The touted LAN requires a permanent internet connection...

+ Multiplayer maps more enjoyable than what's in MW2 (subjective)
    + Singleplayer is mindless fun

Laggy and too many online cheaters with aimbots and wall-hacks; ruins the fun. Just a lot of people running around holding down the fire button, really no tactics involved. Expected a lot more, but based on the previous games and how they didn't address the cheats, its no wonder that this is no different.

Aside for glaring graphical issues the sound was also horrible, the AK-47 sounds like a pee-shooter and unrealistic. I also kept getting stuck on corners and low objects on the ground like debris that you should easily be able to walk or jump over but the only way to get off them is to turn around and go right back the way you came. This happens so often that it just gets annoying and ruins a lot of the fun.

As far as the gameplay goes, I think the story was well written, a little short and a bit predictable but fun none the less. That being said its about the only good thing to the game that I can think of. The multi-player is pretty much the same as MW2 with a few changes here and there. Changed the unlock system but the game still plays out the same; one player can pretty much win or lose a match for the entire team and once again no team play is required and it hardly ever takes place anyway.

I myself have spent near 1800 hours playing mw2 online and it ofcourse has its ups and downs , and mw2 is the only game one really should compare mw3 to.
Comparing it to BF3 is just silly , it is not in the same genre, it is not the same kind of battle, it is not the same gameplay.

Some players say that MW3 is just a mw2 with another map-pack.
    We agree to a point.
But if this was true that this game would actually be better.

From an expectation point of view we had really big hopes for mw3, specially since there were promises of dedicated servers and online statistics services.
Those 2 were really the most attractive features.
Dedicated servers would rid the problem of cheaters, or atleast help with anti-cheating.

The dissapointment was huge when the reality proved that the statistics service is not available for PC and that dedicated servers removes the XP-gains.

In our opinion that were 2 promises not kept.
In a normal market this would be a simple "product returned for false advertisement, full refund" situation.

But lets talk about the game-play.
At first glance we noticed that you are not able to play hardcore out of the box, you first need to play and get ranked up to even have this option.

This is of course easily dodged by partying up with someone who already has this rank.
This feature is more of an obstacle than a feature.

The first experience when actually starting a round was that the graphics looks like something that was developed 10 years ago.
Perhaps the developers never heard of the expression "Less is more" when putting way too many ugly looking effects in this game.
In MW2 the graphics actually look better.

The sounds has a very plastic feeling to it through everything.
Guns , bombs, voices all lack that genuine feeling that you get with good sound effects.
The voices sometimes make you laugh while wondering if the producers were serious at all when making this game.

One thing that was very good in MW2 was that most maps offered variation and good cover.
This is something that does not exist in MW3.
Almost every single map (we have 2 exceptions) feels like one room and its just a "first, shoot first kill"-scenario over and over.

We were promised Prestige Tokens from earlier cod games.
We have all prestiged in mw2 and yet did not get any tokens in mw3.

    Cheaters............
We will let you know what the most annoying problem with so many cheaters is.
Good players get accused of using cheats.
A good player can have is game totally ruined by someone who (from the vast ammount of existing cheaters) totally cannot believe that the good player acually plays fair.
This happens almost every time we play.
    This needs to be F.I.X.E.D.

I will say this straight out.
We feel robbed and lied to.
To make this game better you should 1. Fix dedicated servers, 2. look over the graphics, 3. update the sounds, 4. take away the obstacle that makes hardcore unavailable from the start 5. and if not let us into the universial statistics service then atleast give is some way of getting this data from our games so that we can do fun internal statistics within our societies.

There is something truly special about that game. It provided a compelling story, excellent multi-faceted gameplay, amazing multiplayer, and the overall presentation felt like a modern action movie. MW2 came with its controversy. It's campaign was a continuation of the COD:MW. It tied up the story quite nicely. It's multiplayer left something to be desired. Black Ops had a very intriguing campaign which was fun to experience. It's multiplayer crawled further into the hole that MW2 dug. Modern Warfare 3 is a continuation of the MW 2 campaign. It shares elements of the first and second MW games. It's graphics are starting to show rust around the edges of an aging engine. It's gameplay is far more more more. By that I mean, someone must have looked at COD:MW and said, like that only more. More enemies, more explosions, more chaos. That doesn't translate into a compelling experience. It's the Michael Bay formula. While I'm usually a fan of the continuation of a compelling story, this game just didn't deliver. I honestly would rather have watched it than played it. That's the type of experience it was. It didn't make me feel anything. in COD:MW you felt something when Cpt. Price led you through enemy territory to a sniper hide. You felt something when the nuclear bomb went off. You felt something when controlling the Spectre gunship. Even in MW2 you felt something when you chose to become a terrorist. This game elicits no emotion. The closest they came is at the end of the game. This final scene only solidified my desire for this to have been a watching experience instead of a participation. It was loud and chaotic and failed to connect with me. Given the controversy with the studio who made the first two modern warfare games, I feel it may be unfair to judge Sledgehammer games for this. Their next title may well end up in the echelon of COD:MW and COD1. Unfortunately, this pusillanimous title may have been the mandate of the publisher. The multiplayer experience in this game is geared towards those who prefer the style of Black Ops moreso than COD:MW. It is rife with gadgets and streaks and kludgy perks. It is fast paced and rewards twitchy hands over strategy and stealth. It does not have dedicated ranked servers. With the addition of MW:Elite, I feel the franchise has entered into a new territory which can only serve to hurt the community and will punish the loyalist who can't break free.

In the end, I gave it a three of ten because this title lacks all courage. It stuck to a formula which it knew would sell to loyalists. This is, of course, a review of the PC version. Once you move to a console version, the multiplayer issues disolve and you're still stuck with the loud booming and explosive chaotic experience which all the kids love. Problem is, this is a mature title.

Its not like the graphics are that much crazier. The animations are still fluid, the hit-confirm is still great. Everything is as what it was years ago... GREAT! But after so many hours, you tend to get sick of it all. Because nothing really changed. I felt ripped off!

Single player campaign can be completed in one night. You have mission ops that can be done solo or with a friend... which can also be complete in one night. Multiplayer has been the same since the original.

I really think you could have released these maps as an expansion along with the story.

My main complaint is multiplayer. The amount of hacking here is REDICULOUS. At least 1 out of 4 games I've played had 1 hacker or even 2!!! Real disappointing.... the same game for 50 bucks +

If you've played BF, MoH, CoDBO, or CoDWaW, there is a lot left to be desired.

There are nice new features such as the killstreaks that are customizable for each load out. Some of the streaks are left overs but they all seem familiar. The hardcore tends to be a bit nurfed compared to previous versions of CoD (MW series and Treyarch series).

From the preview footage it looked old, and very rehashed and all the mw2.5 jokes belonged and were actually funny. Then i was pestered into buying it by my friends like all the other call of duty games. After playing it with a very open mind i can easily say that this game is worth every penny. If you are the kind of person who just likes to shoot people in the face then you will feel right at home. It has the most chaotic gameplay Ive seen in a modern shooter and reminds me of a time when it was all about having fun. When im playing this, I picture myself playing a modern incarnation of quake 3. Bullets are flying all over the place, and EVERYONE is getting kills. The multiplayer is the one portion i thought i would be spending the least amount of time with but the addictive nature of call of duty sucked me in and I played it for days on end. The addition of strike packages also allows those non-twitch players to get some streaks that benefit their team. Theres a bigger emphasis on teamwork in this title than previous ones and creates a much more friendly atmosphere which is full of more people saying "good game" then people saying "noob-tuber". I also enjoyed the single player alot more than i did in black ops. Infinity ward nailed the pacing and provided some of the best set pieces Ive seen in a game as well as some pretty good story. I cant touch on CO-OP too much as i haven't had a chance to finish it all, but from what ive seen, the spec ops missions are much more intense and cinematic and the survival is epic to say the least. All in all there is alot of fun to be had in this game. The game is receiving good scores for a reason. If you go in expecting the same game like i did, then you will be delightfully surprised with this game. Call of duty Modern Warfare 3 was the one game i thought i would dislike, but it ended up slapping me in the face with a fist full of fun. They have been using the same engine for five years. I have never really been a follower of the Call of Duty games; Back in the day, it was Medal of Honor or nothing, but since EA managed to practically destroy that series, like they did with many others (think C&C), I have been forced to look elsewhere. I have never really been a follower of the Call of Duty games; Back in the day, it was Medal of Honor or nothing, but since EA managed to practically destroy that series, like they did with many others (think C&C), I have been forced to look elsewhere. So here I am at Modern Warfare 3. Because I am somewhat lazy, I am just going to create a list of some dot-points.

*It's the first COD game I have played competitively online and I am enjoying the experience; aside from some bugs. One thing that does annoy me is that there is no big maps, so you are usually forced to use close-to-medium range guns. I can also understand why IW didn't change the multiplayer experience too much - it would have alienated the fan base. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", comes to mind here.

*I do agree with most people here - the engine for this game is aging too much. Sure it has improved slightly over each game, but no matter how many labels IW slaps on the engine, its still the same thing. "No matter how much you polish turd...". The colours are dull and washed out, textures are flat and low resolution, shadows are horrible, the foliage does not look great, and the overall definition of the game ain't there. It's time for a new engine - one that actually looks decent on a 1080p screen.

*Let's be honest here, I didn't buy COD for the campaign, so I don't care how mediocre it may seem, but as long as there is one I am not fussed. The storyline itself was extremely short and full of almost every cliche known to man. One big Hollywood explosion-fest. Where are the war games that actually make you feel the real emotions of war and the morals behind it all? A game that really makes you think about your actions or question what is happening in front of you. I know it might be hard to portray in an interactive media like games, but I'm sure its probably not entirely impossible.

To sum it up, future COD games need a new engine, better story lines, and more map sizes and varieties. I'm not saying it has to compete with BF3 in terms of gameplay, like most people here ( That would be like comparing apples to oranges. One game offers large-scale multilayer with vehicles, the other is more like a death match arena game), it just has to improve it's core - what made it great in the first place. My decision to purchase Modern Warfare 3 was simple; I haven't owned a COD game before, and wanted to experience what the fuss was all about by purchasing the latest installment. I couldn't really careless about the previous games (although I did like World at War).

And about he contrasting scores here on Metacritic - it was insane what the critics rated the game, I don't think it deserves that high of a score. As for the user reviews, most are people who compare it to BF3 or who feel betrayed, let-down, or conned by IW/Activision by not delivering a game that lives up to its very own hype, or the users own expectation. At the end of the day, who is more likely to voice their opinion? Someone who has something positive to say, or someone who has something negative to say?

"No Dedicated Servers" - This is a problem, The P2P IWnet is fail for a person from New Zealand like myself but for other places i don't think its a big deal. The game is still very playable with 100 MS Ping, if you can't handle that then you are just a bad player. I would like to be able to choose what i play but the random nature of P2P is a good thing. It keeps you playing different maps, it won't let you get good at one map and make you look like a god.

"Old Game Engine" - This is not a big deal, the game still looks great and that's the important thing. Is it really that out of date compared to other games? If you are talking about BF3 that i think most are, Yes. But lets look at Skyrim the highest rated game running at the moment, That engine is OLD ! its been improved but its still the same platform that Oblivion and fallout ran on. Why are people not running over there and pointing that out? I will tell you why, There is no haters club for Skyrim. Skyrim is still a great game !

"Hackers" - This isn't just related to COD, There are fools doing it in all the other games. I don't even think this is a valid point to make. It shows the weakness of the P2P hosting even more but hackers are cheats, they are in every game BF3 has a large problem with them at the moment. ISP Hosted servers are as slow to react as P2P Servers, Remember that.

"Copy of MW2" - You know when people haven't tried the game when they make this point. the game is very Different, This game has more in common with Black ops than MW2.

It is quite clear that Infinity Ward has lost its magical touch. MW3 is a huge dissapointment; this was the perfect chance to innovate and truly bring us something fresh, but it appears as though this game simply seeks to ride on the success of its predecessor, MW2. Having said that, it really isn't MW3; a more suitable name for the game would be MW2.5 i.e. what MW2 SHOULD have been. ThisIt is quite clear that Infinity Ward has lost its magical touch. Having said that, it really isn't MW3; a more suitable name for the game would be MW2.5 i.e. what MW2 SHOULD have been. This isn't completely true though, as MW3 still suffers from a wide array of problems, the most prominent of which is the unadjustable Field of View (a common NECESSITY in FPS games). I find it almost impossible to play this game on PC without it giving me a head ache. I don't want to spend any more time explaining how bad this game is (although I feel obligated to point out the netcode is TERRIBLE and the multiplayer suffers massively as a result), but one thing IS clear: the game is a cash grab. Modern Warefare 3 is more of the same, that's really the main gist of it. It is the same game Infinity Ward made in 2007. While it was a good game back then, now it just feels stale. The development team took no risks and pushed no envelopes while making this game. There are also our favourite deathstrikes and because of the"new" killstrikes it is also "MW3 - only campers multiplayer".
That is really waste of money and time, so i highly not recommend this thing.

The PC community was promised that dedicated servers were going to be brought back (which they were). The PC community was promised that they game would be competitive (lol) and that the new methods being implemented would help deter hackers.

I wish to convey the message that we may not have been lied to directly by any of the above mentioned companies, but we were not given full truths. Developers wished to promote Call of Duty Elite which in their opinion was something that was needed for gaming. However, PC community did not get it and recent reports claim may not ever get it (not that we asked, or were excited or even cared about the service). This service is the reason developers claim that the PC community is too unstable to create a worth while game. With inherent hacking and glitching they could not offer a valid means to roll out the service. This being as it is, developers wanted to make this their big thing for the launch and were very insistent on making this happen, even at the cost of the players. To help them make sure the game would be able to be launched on their terms (not the players) they went against what they knew to be the overwhelming majority in the PC community. They made sure dedicated servers were able to be manipulated so that hosts could unlock or lock whatever they wanted on the games. They also made it so that players could not rank up while playing on dedicated servers (everything is already unlocked). Which naturally leaves the Peer to Peer match making the only way to get the Call of Duty experience of leveling. These could be fixed if developers find away to reverse the negatives (which are major and mainly why scores are down) and do as company slogans have been across the markets "the customer is always right". While they may have beaten sell numbers from previous games I would be hard pressed to think that it will be that way (at least with PC) next time.

To validate the +2 on my score (-8 being mentioned above) the game meets co-op expectations, although barely. While the game is fun and new many game types, the game has many glitches and problems that should have been found in beta testing (although it was not offered as an OPEN beta on PC). I have found that the game is merely something to put on the shelf (or the imaginary one of steams uninstalled games) and say "Oh yea I remember that, meh lets play something else.."

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Basing this entirely on the Single Player options, because a lack of dedicated servers is a BIG BAD thing for online gaming.

As advertised, MW3 picks up where MW2 left off. The characters were established, apart from a handful of new characters.

The campaign could have been longer, but that is a common complaint with the Modern Warfare series anyway. Spec Ops mode contains more than in MW2, and gives you not just the missions, but also survival mode, with some handy perks as you level up.

All in all, as part of the series, it lives up to what it advertised, and without pulling punches. Is there room for improvement? Yes.

Rehashed AC-130 Mission, same breach and clear events in slow motion, and a contrived plot attempting to tie the plot together with the previous iterations. Still great multiplayer, though it was best exemplified in MW2. The extra tweaks make it worth a look, but won't make you stay for long.

I had fun playing it for about 10 hours, but I've moved on to greener pastures. I won't be expecting much in the next sequel.

Thus, I can't recommend buying this unless you (still) like the fast pace, the customizable weaponry and the short matches, of about 10 minutes each. With the very important mention that, essentially, nothing has changed.
