Besides the astonishing art design and the rich and imaginative dark-fantasy world, Blasphemous doesn't know how to mix perfectly the different genres it belongs to.

A gore-laden feast for the most barbaric among us, Blasphemous truly is a punishing game in the best possible way. I just wish it had a more gripping story to go with it.

Blasphemous is a truly unforgettable experience that stands out in the Metroidvania genre.

Lack of depth and variety, and some platforming missteps, stain an otherwise great, oppressive experience.

Visually striking and filled with a lot of interesting lore bits, Blasphemous is a competent action/platform with a pinch of souls-like and metroidvania mechanics. A brutal and well executed adventure with some flaws gameplaywise and a quality level with several ups and downs.

Though it can be frustrating that its core gameplay never evolves past the often one-note rhythm of hacking and jumping across different levels, keeping it from reaching greater heights, I still came away impressed with how much Blasphemous stuck close to its haunting, dark storyline. To that end, playing through this send-up to metroidvania games was a satisfying trial to overcome in its own right.

Blasphemous may be a case of style over substance, but that style still carries it a long way. It's very clear that a lot of time and effort went into making this game look and sound as good as possible. If you're craving a well-produced Soulslike or Metroidvania and you don't mind slower combat and a one-note narrative, then Blasphemous will give you an intense fix.

Blasphemous is unforgiving, brutal, and at times, unfair. Beneath the drudgery is a compelling and dark tale waiting to be uncovered. If you are willing to endure its frustrations, you’ll be rewarded with grim and spectacular visuals that’ll be forever burned into your mind, and an equally twisted story to match them.

Blasphemous is just a generic metroidvania garnished with an overly pretentious presentation that doesn't add too much to the mix. ControlsBlasphemous is just a generic metroidvania garnished with an overly pretentious presentation that doesn't add too much to the mix. Controls feel unresponsive, exploration is a chore and the upgrade system won't keep you engaged for long, even with a thick coat of deep (and boring) lore that tries to flesh out a world that is fundamentally uninteresting.

Technically speaking cutscenes and art direction are top notch, but some environments and regular enemies fall under the "ugly game from the 16 bit era" kind of style, and not in a good nostalgia way.

Godawful controls and level design. Refunded after 2 hours with it. Blasphemous indeed.

great style, pretty satisfying fighting mechanics, however, quite poor platforming part. the biggest issue is the game gets quite tedious -great style, pretty satisfying fighting mechanics, however, quite poor platforming part. the biggest issue is the game gets quite tedious - there are so few teleports (or lack of them at all in some areas), that backtracking is such a huge part of the game. quite a pain in the ass to backtrack through corridors of levels you ve been many time (with all mobs alive). its not hard, its just tedious.
oh, and spikes. there are lots of them, they kill instantly and you have to run through several levels again to get to the same point and try again. just kills all the desire to try again, to be honest, especially with such a poor platforming.
also, magic is useless. hence, the penalty for dying is meaningless.
