Blasphemous is just a generic metroidvania garnished with an overly pretentious presentation that doesn't add too much to the mix. Controls feel unresponsive, exploration is a chore and the upgrade system won't keep you engaged for long, even with a thick coat of deep (and boring) lore that tries to flesh out a world that is fundamentally uninteresting.

Technically speaking cutscenes and art direction are top notch, but some environments and regular enemies fall under the "ugly game from the 16 bit era" kind of style, and not in a good nostalgia way.

oh, and spikes. there are lots of them, they kill instantly and you have to run through several levels again to get to the same point and try again. just kills all the desire to try again, to be honest, especially with such a poor platforming.
also, magic is useless. hence, the penalty for dying is meaningless.

But...it's okay. Not bad, not great.

Easy stuff first. Graphics are good. It's pixel art, yet very detailed. Art style is GREAT. The macabre, gothic, and gory setting is really cool. Nice to immerse yourself in and explore. Music is okay. Nothing noteworthy, nothing bad.

Now the gameplay. This is why it's so hard to recommend.

Metroidvania's usually give you a plethora of weapons and abilities to play with. In Blasphemous, you get the one sword you start with. Already a bad start. You get other abilities, but they are heavily gated because of high cost, meaning you get to play with a new skill just once in a blue moon. To make things worse, the abilities don't really add much further depth to the gameplay. To make things even worse, the combat abilities are highly situational; you're just better of playing it safe by using the standard 3-hit combo. They added a parry, though, which is nice and satisfying.

The biggest issue with Blasphemous is that it simply doesn't have that same steady and satisfying progression Metroidvanias tend to have. In Castlevania, and the recent hit Bloodstained, you're always being rewarded for pushing onward, without making you OP. You're always unlocking abilities that let you access areas that were previously inaccessible to you. You're constantly unlocking new armor and weapons to try, and then to possibly keep, if you like. In Blasphemous, your character feels EXTREMELY static. No new armor. No new weapons. You'll kill enemy after enemy, boss after boss, and you won't feel like you've achieved anything. You wont' feel like you've gotten stronger at all despite toughing it out for so long. Maybe it's an artistic decision - it's a dark game, so apply a dark and heavy feeling by keeping your player character weak? There are beads to give you buffs, but unfortunately they are as insignificant as it sounds. They add very minor buffs to you that you really won't feel. Sounds good on paper, awful in practice. Additionally, they add instant game overs from pitfalls and spikes. Not cool. It feels really bad to fall into a pit and die despite having worked so hard to preserve your life and healing items. Even the old school Symphony of the Night didn't do this. In SotN, you take heavy damage instead so that you don't have to repeat from the last checkpoint. Bad decision to add instant game overs.

Tying in to progression, Blasphemous imitates Dark Souls' grim and vague storytelling. Vague storytelling is fine if done right. However, in Blasphemous they take it too far. Item descriptions often barrage you with terms and characters you're not familiar with. The NPCs in the world often do the same, referencing weird terms and characters...and you're just expected to nod along. It's weird. Not good storytelling. Perhaps it's a metaphor for religion as a whole, such that you are not meant to understand - you are simply meant to not think, but to only accept and obey? I don't know. On paper sounds promising, but in practice it's just bad storytelling.

Blasphemous suffers from being made by a small team, I think. I'm tempted to give this a 6, but I'm giving it a 7, because small teams are awesome and they deserve love for this amazing world and concept they built. They've got something really promising here. I hope this game makes enough money to warrant B2; and hopefully then, they'll expand operations so that they can accommodate all the things that make Metroidvanias great.

Blasphemous is a pixel art metroidvania game made in the aesthetics of Spanish Inquisition catholicism. Important themes are guilt, sin, penitence, and lots of disembowelment and beheadings. How is it? It's pretty good, but I do find some stuff kinda finicky.

Visually, it's quite well done. A lot of it is ugly, and I don't mean badly done, I mean intentionally ugly because enemies are dirty and greasy and bloody and disturbing looking. At some point I got a bit tired of seeing disturbing imagery, though YMMV. The library and art gallery portions of the map were pretty cool. In fact, most backgrounds are pretty impressive.

Audio wise, the voice acting is very good. Music is fine, it's never annoying but for the most part it's very low and atmospheric, so kinda forgettable for me.

Story-wise... It seems that it's interesting, but I honestly couldn't really understand what was going on. I ended up reading a lot of fandom pages to try and figure stuff out, who these enemies were and why I was fighting them. It's reminiscent of Souls game in that regard; the story isn't fed to the player at all, one has to actively search for it, and in all honesty that doesn't really work for me. If you love that kind of story-telling style, you'll probably enjoy Blasphemous' story.

The story isn't the only obscure part of the game that kind of annoys me. Quests can be pretty convoluted, and I didn't really actively try to complete them as much as I accidentally picked up random items that NPCs wanted. For a metroidvania, I don't think this is really problematic, although one key item (not necessary to finish the game, though) requires a set of actions obtuse enough that I would never have figured it out without a walkthrough. I didn't actually know until after I'd finished the game how I'd accumulated all those extra accessory slots, because they're not called accessory slots, they're called "mYsTeRiEs Of ThE rOsArY". I honestly thought I was getting lore dumps for the Extras option from the main menu with a name like that. Just call it a freaking accessory slot. I hate it when a Japanese games invent stupid names, I think it's stupid here, too. The menu kinda sucks, I only really want to use it to change loadouts, and the three pages for that use aren't next to each other and I never could tell which tab image represented which page. The random items all have massive text lore dumps that I just find infinitely unappealing. Again, if you like that stuff, you'll probably like Blasphemous.

How is basic gameplay, you ask? It's fine, but I don't think it's such a standout. I often felt like the controls weren't responding to my inputs, it never felt crisp and clean like, say, Hollow Knight. It's unclear to me when or why some enemies and attacks can be dodged through with the slide and others can't. Ladders are surprisingly frustrating to latch onto while jumping. Hitboxes while on ladders are kinda wonky, which doesn't really sound like an issue apart from that one place where lightning bolts are flying everywhere and I felt like I kept getting hit - and falling back down to the bottom of the stage - when I was confident I had cleared the attack. I often got knocked over by enemy attacks, only to get up and get knocked over immediately again, like, 5 times in a row. A few late game enemies take insane amounts of hits - I'm talking 20 to 25 hits - and do about a third of a full health bar of damage in one hit - a hit that often leads to getting knocked over. On some level, they're not that hard, but slowing down to kill a bullet-sponge of a mook isn't my kind of fun. It feels more like a roadblock than a challenge, and the game is already a bit slow to begin with. Bosses on the other hand are great. Varied and original, challenging without being frustrating, they're definitely the highlight of the action.

Some people seem to complain about spikes, which really wasn't an issue for me beyond one challenge room, so I dunno, it's not that bad.

Would I recommend Blasphemous? Depends. If you like Souls games and metroidvanias, yeah, probably. If you don't like either of those things, I'd say avoid it.

You still get used to the controls after some time and at the end of the game it felt quite okay, yet I see why people could complain about the weighty and clunky feel of them. As said, the pixel art is the most gorgeous and stylized I've ever seen, there are some nice ideas in quests and world design and it felt really good to progress through the game (albeit difficult and time-consuming backtracking). One more thing to criticize: The music can be very monotone and uninspired sometimes.

Overall I still recommend this game to anyone who is interested in the style and a brutally religious world. The game excels on conveying characters and that world.

Blasphemous boasts an incredibly gorgeous and intricately detailed pixel art-style which gives the likes of Hyper Light Drifter and Owl Boy a serious run for their money. The setting is horribly violent and depressing, and it never lets up once in the time you’ll have with it. The story itself takes a great deal of inspiration from The Bible and the Holy Inquisition, but doesn’t exist to advocate or protest The Bible, but simply just take a great deal of inspiration from its themes and narrative. The narrative and lore actually ended up being my favorite part of Blasphemous, I loved how twisted and unrelenting its tale of suffering was, and how it intertwined with its different gameplay mechanics. Upon looking into the games story and world, so much of the games seemingly obscure requirements for beating the game and getting the true ending became far more apparent and made much more sense. The savage world and its enigmatic characters were all interesting and enjoyable, and I was always itching to find out more about while playing.

    Initially the game opens up, letting you tackle three bosses/areas in any order you’d like, but once you’ve completed all three bosses there’s one last big area to complete. But unfortunately that’s where Blasphemous’ important choices end. There are heaps of different abilities and pieces of equipment to try out, but I never found any of them to crucial to beating the game, or even really that fun to use and I have a few specific issues with them;

    - Rosary Bead and Mea Culpa Heart affects were usually pretty minute, and not all that helpful. Most of them had affects that were just not useful at or, or that were so minute in their affects that I didn’t even notice them. The only Rosary Beads that I ended up using consistently were the ones that gave you more HP, MP and defense, which are arguably the most boring.

    - I believe there are only seven Prayers (spells) in the game, and considering you can only have one equipped at once there is simply just not enough variety to make them fun to use. The abilities are fairly fun to use at first, but combined with the fact that you have a very finite MP bar, the abilities have fairly limited practical uses and only being able to have one equipped at once means you’re not only barely using them but you also get stuck with just one at a time – and you can’t even change them unless you’re at a checkpoint. They really should have let you equip multiple at once, or given them more versatile uses because I found that on their own they’re not all that helpful or fun to use, and that I was barely using them.

    - Relics unlock different abilities which are required for finding new areas or hidden objects. This is fine in theory, but two improvements could have been made. 1. You can only have 3 of these 5 relics equipped at once, meaning you have to interchange them instead of just being able to use them all at once. There's no reason to not be able to have all of these effects active at once, it just ends up making them less satisfying to find/use and are tedious to swap in and out. 2. These effects are underwhelming, they do things like make additional platforms appear and give resistances to uncommon hazards like poison smog and water

The game struggles a little bit with its equipment and abilities, fortunately the games areas are so fun to explore on their own that it is ultimately still very fun to play anyways. Every area has distinct enemies, environments, beautiful music, obstacles and environments to experience, and each is as fun as the last. The games platforming really shines when it’s combined with combat encounters, trying to navigate treacherous traps and tight platforms all while dealing with enemies makes for some really distinct and intense combat encounters, because the game merges the two seamlessly with great success. The controls are tight and responsive, making platforming and combat feel tight and responsive. The great variety in enemies, bosses paired with the amazing animations make for an engaging combat system which is as fun to watch as it is play.

Blasphemous is certainly worth your time, it’s art direction and story is without a doubt worth the price of admission alone. It controls perfectly, the level design is great, the combat is tight and responsive and all the areas are interesting and fun to explore. It however suffers from some very weak, boring, useless and restraining abilities and items. A lot of potential here, and I look forward to seeing what the developers do next.

The surprising amount of cutscenes must have taken days and the work shows, especially the interesting lore slapped onto each item, but that's about the end of work showing on Blasphemous.

This game isn't entirely sure what it wants to be when it grows up, there are elements of past 2D platformers/metroidvania games with a dash of soulslike baked in but doesn't blend these elements well. It's Shovel Knight instant kill spikes and pits clash horribly with it's DS soul recovery mechanic, doubly so when the number of souls you can leave behind can stack up. The Relic system is interesting at first but entirely becomes a mind-numbing slog towards the end, collecting relics to get other relics to get other relics to get collectibles with the EXTREMELY sparse amount of fast-travelling means hours of running around through previously explored areas, until eventually killing enemies is pointless because you've got more money than you know what to do with and you just powerslide everywhere.

The enemies, while also interestingly designed almost never fit the theme of an area, you'll find enemies that would fit better elsewhere in different places, the library was honestly the most cohesive area in the game for enemies, music, and BGs and even it had some weirdness! It just feels like they designed this whole slew of enemies and said, "What combination of things would be most obnoxious on this screen. How about this screen?" Near as I can tell there's no bestiary either, which is crazy with the amount of lore, so you're left wondering what a lot of the insane monsters youre fighting even are. The bosses are piss easy compared to some of the enemy combos and platforming, skills are just about entirely useless in combat compared to your main attack, there is ZERO linearity so you can easily find yourself killing yourself repeatedly on a boss intended to be beaten with a mile long healthbar, double back after you win and 3 hours later slam dunk one-shot the bosses you were clearly supposed to fight first.

If they lowered the difficulty to match it's poor cohesion and called it an art game it might have honestly been more enjoyable, but it simply doesn't live up to contemporaries in the genre like Hollow Knight and Salt & Sanctuary. Play them instead, both are cheaper.

The looks and sound amazing great art direction great sound, and for the most part it plays well-enough but.... it never really quite clicks I always found myself not feeling empowered as a player. And by that I mean I never felt like the hero that this troubled game world needed... I felt more like a some guy that is that's exploring a lot and dying a lot and thank god I have unlimited lives because by god I'm going to use them all (and not to toot my own horn but I am really good at these kinds of games so if I was dying this much new players watch out.)

Now feels like a good time to address the challenge-o-meter on this one on a scale of 1 to 10, 3 it too easy, 5 is your making progress but never super challenged, and eight is frustratingly hard this game sits at a solid 8.2, if it were any (and I do mean even the tiniest bit) harder it would simply be NOT FUN. There were a few times I really felt we had crossed over from the land of video GAMES over to video WORK and that's just never cool.

Lastly a few things to be advised on the map is big and creative BUT the fun is sapped out of it because (nood mistake team 17 that NEED and could so easily be fixed) there are like nowhere close to enough fast travel points so my first play through was around 15 hours and for real about 1/2 of that was spent running and slicing my way to singular upgrade locations or going back to a earlier level to get an up-grade. So the backtracking is real and tediously part of this game. But the game always looks good and plays good for the most part so said back-tracking isn't the kiss of death it could be, but still be prepared to do A LOT (and I mean A LOT) of it.

In the end I'm going to give this a 7.0 out of 10 and that feels really appropriate cause there is so much about this game that scores right in that place of the edge of good game status, if there was just 1 or 2 more things that weren’t in place about this game it would suck, but it doesn’t so its… kind of ok.

If you like to play games that feel like jobs, or if you're simply a demented masochist, then I can highly recommend playing this game to you. Otherwise, stay away. Watch a let's play, read the lore on the wiki (idk if there's one). It's just not worth the effort.

A slightly strange variation on a religious journey with agony, punishment, cool phrases and normal sound. The atmosphere is really what you need. A soft death system that doesn't make every defeat a small personal grief. The plot... well, not a masterpiece, but something new, for which you can definitely praise the creators. And for some bosses too.
But what I won’t praise for sure is for the other part of the bosses, which are just boring. Especially I’ll note the fire nun with her wildly random pattern of fire attacks from two hands. At the very beginning of the game, it is not so much difficult as it is very annoying when you are losing.
Platforming. I think not a single game review on YouTube has bypassed how stupid it is implemented here.
Contact damage, which is either there or not. It is not clear whether it will be or not (hello to the nuns with a censer). The monsters themselves do not take damage from the environment. The way the enemy passes through the lava flow looks very stupid and primitive.
Periodically crooked hitboxes. Once I died on a completely empty place next to the spikes (one of the Miriam's trials).
Half of the prayers and beads are complete bullsh*t. Half are extra-strong. I was especially pleased with the two discs with which I passed many bosses on the second play-through.
I still recommend this game for purchase, because you can get used to many bad moments, and the game itself, nevertheless, is quite interesting and addictive. But, probably at a discount prices.

    pros:
+ The artstyle is absolutely gorgeous and unique. Hands down the best thing about this game
+ Similiar to the artstyle the animations and finishers look really nice and are very brutal
+ Free DLC, which is always amazing
+ The lore and world built here is absolutely unique, grim and similarly to Dark Souls very cryptic. I love it
+ The map is nice, structured and offers many pins to mark places of interest
    + Hitting baddies feels good
+ Very nice quests with different interesting NPCs

    cons:
    - This is the typical kind of game which throws way too much stuff at you which is not needed. Best example: the abundance of sword hearts and magical spells. Less is sometimes more
    - The platforming can feel clunky every now and then
    - The bosses look amazing but are a bit boring and too similiar for my taste
    - The game becomes too easy too quickly. There was no real challenge anywhere (except from maybe the human bosses)

All in all playing through Blasphemous was a fun time. Unfortunately because of the abundance of different stuff which in my opinion does not add much to the experience and gets boring quickly (picking up another magic spell I will never use gets old quick) as well as no real challenge for about 90% of the game held it back from becoming an amazing Metroidvania.
I would still recommend it to any metroidvania fan for the artstyle alone. It is gorgeous.

The appeal is mainly in the original world, inspired by some kind of esoteric and gnarly Spanish Catholicism, which carries the experience with its themes of penance, sacrifice, and a mysterious Miracle that blurs the line between pain and grace. This setting is brought to life by glorious pixel art, which features detailed cutscenes and large-scale, cinematic bosses.
Writing helps realize the strange world of Blasphemous, and this game's writing encapsulates for me its best and worst qualities. Every ability and item you find has lore text that fleshes out the world. Despite feeling rough, as if they needed a couple more revisions, these small stories consistently fascinated me. Because of them, I had a very strong motivation to continue exploring, and to me this is a sign of true inspiration: The strength of Blasphemous' concept is enough to trivialize the weaknesses of the game's script that result from a native Spanish speaker writing in English.

The bigger flaws lie in the gameplay. While Blasphemous is competent in the main pillars of metroidvania - being platforming, exploration, combat, secrets, and RPG elements - the balance is just a little off. Some examples:
-Your currency (tears) is so easy to gain that it makes all items related to tears useless. Much of the time I was running around with tens of thousands of tears.
-While the game features insta-death spikes, the punishment upon death is only to lose some of your maxmimum mana temporarily. The fact you don't lose your tears removes all fear from dying, and reduces it to an occasional annoyance when you miss a ladder grab or whatnot.
-Most of the equippable items you gain aren't useful enough, the best ones simply boost defence vs. various attack types.
-There aren't enough movement upgrades in general. The type of stuff I found is along the lines of, reduce the cooldown on the dodge/dash or fall, so you can take another action faster. Not very epic.
-Likewise, the spells and sword hearts vary too much in quality. One spell is a lightning attack that provides the unique utility of hitting things at the top of the screen, while another merely increases attack speed for a short duration.
-Ability upgrades are, once again, poorly balanced. The tears spent on most of them go to waste, as they're often less effective than smart use of the jump, dodge, and normal attack. The charge attack desperately needs to have freedom of movement, as it's too slow to be useful in the situations it should be. The dash attack consistently whooshes straight past enemies, missing them. The ranged attack and the falling attack are no more than utility skills, having no damage application during bosses.
-The delay between actions is a little longer than other games, and takes some getting used to.
I could go on, but I hope you get the idea. Basically, almost everything about the gameplay could use just a little tweaking, to tighten it up.
But don't get me wrong, it's not a frustrating game. As I said the gameplay fundamentals are competent, and traversing the levels is fun, killing enemies is fun. There are almost a dozen interconnected levels, all with their own obstacles and enemy types. And regardless of any balance issues, the bosses provide a good variety of challenges. All in all I'm impressed with what the devs accomplished, and I look forward to seeing what they can make when given more time to refine their design ideas.

And so, while The Game Kitchen's first dish tastes good, it's somewhat undercooked. There, I have made the joke. My initial playthrough was approx. 12 hours, 85/100% completion, meaning at least 15% of the game is optional.

    - Los putos pinchos y las distancias de las plataformas en algunos puntos son algo ridículos en la precisión requerida

When it comes to music and sound,I feel like there is a good variety of it as well, but nothing that stands out. That's not to say that the soundtrack accompannying you in your adventure is bad, just that it didn't stick out to me as much as I would like but the focus of the game isn't the music of course it's just there to acclimatize you.The gameplay sounds good all around and there isn't much to say about it.
Lastly, when it comes to gameplay,it's the complete opposite to the presentation of the game, since it's really standarized. You won't find anything new or experimental in this department and after a couple of hours you'll have complete understanding of the game mechanics and timing is the only skill you will really need to improve. The combos are about what you would expect from a side scrolling hack and slash and the powers you obtain and use with fervor are situational if not useless.
The biggest challenge this game offers other than bosses is sadly the platforming.I found myself falling to my death way more times than dying to enemies and a lot of these have been due to the character missing a land by a mere pixel, which is really frustarating. The challenge some of the bosses offer though can make up for a few instances of bad platforming, especially the final 2 bosses who I can say you have to almost master the game to be able to beat.
Overall,a pretty solid and beautiful experience,a couple of bugs here and there and nothing new in the gameplay portion, but the world and challenge of the game make up for it.

Blasphemous is a successful fusion of Dark Souls and Metroidvania gameplay, while notably lacking several of the features that make the former occasionally irritating to play, specifically the invasion mechanic. It is also an aesthetic masterwork, painting a landscape of stone, sin and acoustic guitars that embodies the darkest aspects of religious fervor.

A curse of sins unforgiven lies upon the land of Custodia. Known as the Grievous Miracle, it is guilt made manifest, twisting and warping the fearful masses into murderous and grotesque mockeries of human life. You are the Penitent One, the last survivor of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrows. Wielding a sword born of guilt known as Mea Culpa, it is your penance and your mission to cleanse the land of holy terrors.

While similar to Hollow Knight and other "melee vanias" in some respects, it is considerably less difficult then the former, though it starts out rough. Mea Culpa has surprising reach, and persistent upgrades are abound throughout the world. Though death can come easily, rather then drop the entirety of your currency, called Tears of Atonement, as in Souls or Hollow Knight, you merely drop a "guilt fragment", which imposes a small penalty to your maximum magic, called Fervor. Successive deaths result in more fragments and Fervor penalties but they can be easily retrieved by returning to the scene of your death, or else you may visit a Confessor Statue and pay a Tears fee to have the guilt removed. There are "Prie Dieu" shrines that perform the save, flask refill and enemy reset functons of Souls' Bonfires, with the warp function instead relegated to dedicated warp rooms a la Symphony of the Night.

At the Penitent One's disposal are various holy artifacts. You begin with two Biliary Flasks that perform the function of Souls' Estus Flask, and you can find up to eight more in the world. They must first be brought to a Fountain to be filled, and these fountains can also be used to refill your health and flasks for a Tears fee. Rosary Beads provide passive buffs and up to six can be equipped, though you begin with only two slots and must find Knots and bring them to a certain NPC first. You can also equip up to 3 relics, which provide various traversal abilities in the vein of Samus' suit upgrades. There are Sword Hearts, which provide both a buff and proportionate drawback. Finally, there are active spells, called Prayers, of which only one can be equipped at a time but are usually quite useful. All of the above can be changed on the fly save for Sword Hearts, which can only be changed at a shrine. Also to be found are maximum health and fervor upgrades and Mea Culpa shrines, which when first found upgrade your base damage, and provide additional attacks and upgrades for a Tears fee.

While on the shorter side of Metroidvanias and possessing a lot of backtracking if you want to achieve 100% completion, the detailed hand-drawn visuals, atmospheric soundtrack, impressive boss fights and the merciful ability to return to the last shrine you rested at via quitting and reloading your save without progress loss, makes it an enjoyable jaunt throughout. I'd love to see further games set in Blasphemous' universe.

Very good game. Basically it's a metroidvania with some soulslike touches. A game that will remind us of great classics like 'Symphony of the Night' and more modern classics like 'Bloodborne'. A design of scenarios and enemies quite well worked and with hours ahead to enjoy.

The story is also bombastic but it requires a bit of patience and exploration since you need to piece it together from the different bosses, allies and hidden doors and such. There are also 3 endings and I feel like the creators somehow praise Religion and the holy benefits(HOPE) that it can give to people who are with one foot in the grave but also try to make you aware of false hoods and priests that offer you salvation via Religion. Especially the third ending explores that even deeper but I wont spoil it(just play it). The soundtrack is also great but don't expect any hardcore and epic orchestras when fighting the bosses. My minor issues with the game is that the keyboard input sometimes doesn't work correctly or it has a delay which can result in a lot of unfair falls to your death. Some game play mechanics are also annoying especially against some very (almost cheat like) enemies. The map and some level designs need improvement in my opinion since they are very deceptive and sometimes don;t even make sense. Overall Great Game. Expand

Intriguing story and artwork instantly had me attached to this game, but the further I traversed into this cursed landscape, I came to realize the maze wasn't a one-way trip. Travel is horrible in this game. I like the idea of exploratory elements, but if you go too far down a single path, getting to the other end can be annoying and time-consuming when you've already conquered that terrain.

Having come from the Demon's Soul series and my playthroughs of OG Castlevania, I have had a blast becoming frustrated with the levels and how to go about them without taking much health or falling into a spike pit. There are plenty of side-quests to keep you exploring things you may have missed. Even with all of the frustration and deaths, you always feel rewarded when making it past an obstacle or enemy that had bested you. For those who are new to this type of game, a controller may be more comforting. I have been using keyboard controls and they are a bit rough at first, but don't give up just because you can't make it past an area. Keep trying and take your time.

Despite being a bit tedious, Blasphemous offers many satisfying moments like being able to find a shortcut or a shrine when you most need it. Some of the quests are really interesting and even if they're not mandatory to finish the game, I would strongly recommend trying to finish as many of them as possible. The way the story is told (or rather discovered), the amazing artwork, and the fast-paced combat are aspects of the game that grabbed me throughout my playthrough. You'll indeed have to do a lot of backtracking if you want to complete as much as the game as possible, but the rewards are worth it.
