A superlative remake of one of the most important games ever made. [Dec 2012, p.89]

We should applaud an excellent work made for free by fans of the original game.

Black Mesa will probably go down in history as one of the most ambitious, successful, eye-catching and exciting fan-made projects. Its value as a remake is very high: it elevates in every respect the original Half-Life by Valve and even adds a lot of content. It is definitely the best way to enjoy this story.

The result, though still a bit 'sour for some graphic glitch and not bug-free, fully convinces and the new features do nothing but add prestige and longevity to a project worthy of praise from all points of view.

From our point of view, we do not believe that Black Mesa can be an integral substitute of the original Half-Life (still very enjoyable), as much as an adventure that accompanies it with respect and dignity. And walking tall with a legend can be considered a success in itself.

This is no excellent shooter – by a long run. But regardless this is a decently modernised classic and a well executed journey through time.

The amount of dedication, passion, and love the developers put into this game is immediately apparent as you explore the depths of Black Mesa, and uncover the secrets of this research facility.

Black Mesa transcends the level of 'modification' - they didn't modify anything. They created this game (save for a few sound bites, etc) from the ground up - in an impressive feat not many could accomplish. Having played Half-Life 1, this game left me without a single gripe or complaint regarding it's faithfulness to the original. The additions (of which there are a few) utilize the source engine's physics and graphics in ways that remind you of Half-Life 2. These are not modders, they're developers - and have made a shining masterpiece which raises the bar on third-party game development in the source engine. It's faithful to the original, and yet creates this bizarre sense of deja vu with Half-Life 2 - making them feel like one contiguous game, no longer separated by 6 years or different engines. They have truly done the impossible. This is a must-play.

Half Life to computer fans is like Halo to console fans even though Half Life inspired Halo. The only gripe I have with this game is there's sometimes clipping problems on certain geometry and the only way to remedy the situation is to exit the game and reload, but besides that this is the perfect Half Life recreation and best version to be playing in 2021.

Black Mesa is as great as Half Life was: very interesting story that has a lot to tell and changes while you re playing. A diversified gameplay, so that you dont have to shoot only. A great atmosphere and good immersion: It is a lot of fun just to hear, what NPCs are talking about. There is only 1 problem in Big Mesa: even after 3 years there are still some missions missing :( Expand

+Incredible effort from the mod community in birthing such an ambitious project
+Excellent upgrade from the 1998 original firmly putting the visuals in line with HL2 and effectively turning a visual upgrade patch into a full blown remaster
-While most of the new additions are welcome, some added a bit too much 'roam bloat' for my taste

I bought this on release and was not disappointed. This project more effectively tells the story of Gordon Freeman and sets up new players for HL2 wonderfully. It is an essential purchase for anyone who is a fan of the fps action adventure genre that Valve started back in 1998. Is it perfect? Most of the original game is intact with additional visual and gameplay upgrades. However IMO some of the pacing feels off towards the end section of the game with some overly long back and forth missions in a vast dull environment.... Overall an absolute joy to see this game finished and pick it up.

Tried playing the first few hours of Half Life and it definitely showed its age, fun, but definitely not a modern experience. Black Mesa brought a modern touch to that Half Life experience while still keeping the genuine experience of the original game. The only game, whereupon reading reviews, was I encouraged by fans of the original release to play Black Mesa instead, because it is so faithful and well done. I was honestly blown away, and would encourage others to enter the world of Half Life from this vector. It makes a game from 1998 play like a game from 2008, and that is selling it far short of the actual experience. Expand
