A beautiful and entertaining new take on the classic MMO, with a strong player driven content path. I welcome that.

The biggest issue for me is how dense the complexity makes the game. Crafting, particularly cooking, requires a lot of experimentation or wiki-diving, and finding out the game’s systems isn’t always represented, even in the quests. There are always quests that give you reasons to gather or play the many mini-games—moving a wheel-barrow requires you keep a cursor in between two points, and the fishing system is actually rather fun.
  3. With it's massive and unique open world, Black Desert Online is inviting you to a great adventure.

Black Desert Online had potential to be ground breaking, but suffers from a monotous PVE grind and some questionable practices regarding its cash shop. [Oct 2016]

Black Desert Online is a beautiful game marred by inept tutorials and an impenetrable story.

Black Desert Online wants to be distinct from other MMORPGs, but it isn't different enough in the ways which really matter. The game's few innovations aren't enough to make up for its myriad shortcomings, making it come across as just another MMORPG.

Graphically very pleasing, a great mix of sandbox and theme park features, and real meaningful content that is actually satisfying to complete instead of just auto queuing for the next mindless dungeon. Every facet of the game has much more depth and complexity than the average cookie cutter MMO (ESO, BnS, WoW...) and is much more akin to SWG or Everquest.

The good vastly outweighs the bad, and this is worth a purchase if you are an old school MMO fan.

Ignore the ESO trolls, Black Desert is the game ESO should have been.

You will never forget the days u see your first ents walking through the forest. Or the first time u hammer on a cyclops in a far of forest. The first time u succeed in building a fishing boat and go on the hunt for whales or just see the sun rise above the islands. Cant praise this game enough but its not for people who dont like the grind. This is for people who like to work for their stuff and wait for that feeling when u finnally get that +15 upgrade on your weapon. Expand

I logged in and do some activities in-game, and decided to retire in early 2020. returned to play the newest class Nova at the end of 2020, and quitting again in early 2021. I got 5000+ hours on this game (rookie number compared to the AFK player, I rarely AFK tho). my main class was valkyrie (nerfed hard, and still bad compared to other classes now), and then Guardian, the last one is Nova just to give you how much I spend my time at the game.

The game itself is good looking and got plenty of things to do. you can literally swap your real life for this game because there is so much you can do, and it requires a lot of your time. Therefore "grindy" is the word for this game. If you played it like the same amount (or more than) I do, investing some of your time might be worth it (?), but if you are new (decided to play in 2021) I can only say that you got a LOT of things to catch up, and the "finish line" will just going to keep getting farther and farther from you (as the game keep getting updated). but if you just want to enjoy the sandbox world, then no review can stop you.

The game's natural progression is based on rng (random number generator) or you can say based on chance (or luck). so the only way to have the best chance is to try more, not try harder. and that is the part where the game isn't fun. imagine doing a workout every day, but your muscle grow based on chance. sometimes your muscle grows for just a one-hour workout, sometimes your muscle didn't grow even though you workout every day for a month straight. Not fair, yeah. But since the game isn't new anymore, you can actually buy "growth" in the in-game market with in-game money (requires you to do more activities tho), so money = time. you can pick which one is your way.

I give a 5/10, because of how old it is. you really need self-motivation on this one, as the multiplayer content isn't that good on this one compared to the other MMORPGs. (only PvP is a good multiplayer content, no dungeon, no roles, no good PvE content). People tend to do solo activities in this MMO. the only motivation you got from others is competing over equipment (who got the highest attack and defense). So yeah, make sure you know what you want to do first.

It's not a bad game, it is well crafted moreover a beautiful game. but the grindiness and the ever-growing "content" (the new content usually just an increased capacity of equipment, so player have the illusions of never reached the finish line), the progression based on luck is enough to tell me not to play again.

at this point, the developer will not be going to give you free endgame gear as it will betray the current player base (not like the other old MMOs which give you endgame characters with more expensive packs or something). so prepare to grind and then face your own luck just to reach the endgame where you can finally catch up and enjoy the game (before another update comes).

P.S. I just want to write this review so I didn't feel like I wasted too much time on this game. 5k hours is 200+ days... I had fun, but that was when the game is still young.

But after weeks/days of playing you will know there are a lot of bad mechanics. There good things and bad things and those bad things keep black desert from beying a top MMORPG.

    PROS
    - Big and beautifull world full of quests and things to do (Do not expect original quest. It is same repetitive bussines like in every other MMO)
    - The graphics are one of the best among todays MMO's
    - Sandbox style of the game, you can be skilled gatherer, trader, fisher, cook, horse trainer, etc... Or you can skip that all and focus only on combat power of your character.
    - Itemization and overall game phylosophy. Doesnt matter what level you are, you can use same gear when you are 10 lvl or 50 lvl. You can use materials and items that you found during leveling for your high end gear and high end potions. Literally you are playing end game even on low level.
    - Levelling system (Soft cap 50 level - official max level, but you can get higher levels, but more slowly)
    - Contribution poitns system: When you play, you earn contribution points, that you can invest somewhere. For example to storage, your residence, some grinding location or some farm where your workers can gather materials.
    - Enchanting system where your gear get's more powerfull as you enchant it.

    CONS
    - Clunky PVP. Its just not fun for me. Unnecesary animations and some game aspects make PVP and combat not fun.
    - Boss scroll system is boring and not exciting.
    - Only posibility to trade between players is by auction house (marketplace) I do not have anything againts that, it fights againts gold sellers etc... But they have not implemented anything that let you give some good gear or materials to your friend you play with. You can only give potions to someone.
    - Grinding and fighting monsters is much more efficient over all gatherin, fishing or other activities. It is shame they allowed that. I agreee that fighting monsters should be essential to collect some thing you cant get by gathering, but right now it is best in everything. This part of game is not balanced and damage game itself.
    - Energy system that allows you perform some ingame actions is messed up and total chaos :-D
    - Other game aspects that are simply stupid and unnecesary.

Toxic Community. Unhelpful staff. Highly recommend Final Fantasy XIV as an alternative.

Beware hidden "subscription" features like paid items that increase drop rate and profits for sold items. It's tough to keep up without these. Everything in this game is deigned around a gambling-style RNG system. It's quite clever how much they are able to integrate variable-reward gambling tactics. You do not want to allow kids to play this.
