Developed by Irrational Games, the developer of the original BioShock and BioShock Infinite, this DLC features Rapture as you've never seen it before-a shining jewel at the bottom of the ocean, built almost entirely from scratch in the BioShock Infinite engine. Gameplay has been modified to give the player an original BioShock combat experience that merges the best parts of BioShock and BioShock Infinite: new weapons, new Plasmids/Vigors, Tears, Sky-Lines, and Big Daddies. It’s an affectionately crafted homage to the first game, retroactively building on the grim story and Ayn Rand-ian themes, galvanising them with a fresh perspective whilst simultaneously tying Rapture more wholly into the Columbian narrative. It’s intelligent, indulgent and nostalgic in equal measure, left dangling on a transfixing narrative hook. It’s everything we love about BioShock, condensed.

After completing the first episode of this Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea, it clearly appears that mixing Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite universes was a very good idea indeed, and maybe the best reason for a solo DLC. Going through Rapture is a true joy, and the meeting with Elizabeth as a pin-up is great. The gameplay, the art direction and the scenario are still very interesting. The only drawback are the two hours of play sold for 15€. You should go for the Season Pack!

Burial at Sea is potentially the best DLC of the year. Rapture has been beautifully brought to life, which has you reaching for you PrintScreen button multiple times throughout playing. The story is also brilliantly told, but the content has been split in two. This makes it a relatively short experience, and players will have to deal with that until they can get their hands on part 2.

Burial At Sea tells an interesting tale with plenty of twists, but it doesn't have enough substance on the gameplay side of things to back it up.

While the combination of frustratingly underdeveloped combat and a short length weigh the experience down, there’s definitely enough worth seeing here, at least from a visual and narrative standpoint.

BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea Episode 1 is an excellent expansion in its fundamentals. It offers a new location, a completely new story and new things to discover. Especially returning to Rapture is e pleasant experience. But then, after ninety minutes, your presented with an ending.

Burial at Sea seems a prime example of the tail wagging the dog, and the result is an adventure with fantastic sights and sounds that don't come together in a meaningful way.

However, if your play style is to run and gun and charge through content, wait until you can get both Burial at Sea DLCs in a very cheap bundle. Also, buy the Season Pass instead of purchasing this separately.

The only complaint about this DLC is its length. Depending on your play style, you can finish it in about an hour or upwards of six hours.

For my 5.5 hour run on Hard, I rate this at 9.1. But, if I had run through it in an hour my first time, I would have rated it at 8.3.

It was a lot of fun seeing Rapture in its prime. The combat was more challenging than in BSI's main campaign.

    Graphics: 9
Great detail. I'm not sure if this or BSI's main campaign has the best looking UE3 content, because they're both very good.

    Sound: 9
Although the ambient sounds were good, the music was what made this stand out.

    Design and Gameplay: 9
Combat was much more challenging than in Infinite's main campaign. Although you still have a sky-hook, it's not as over powered as it was in the campaign, because the enemies seem to be able to hit you while jumping now. Also, players can carry all of the weapons they pick up now instead of the two-weapon limit in the main campaign via the new Weapon Wheel.

    Game Length: 2-8
As I said above, if you explore and sneak, this content will take you a fairly long time. If you follow the arrow and charge through quickly, it'll be over in an hour or two.

The soundtrack for the DLC complimented the game's setting, as I have come to expect from the BioShock series. The graphics, I had no issues at all with. The story really just sets up the sequel to this DLC, not a ton happens. However, it is enjoyable to go back to rapture and get some insight into the previous condition of the city, before the events of the original BioShock. The gameplay is where I had some big issues. All of the weapons I used seemed to do uch less damage compared to the base game. This made it very difficult to play on hard mode. Despite this, it did fix some issues that I had with the original game like ammo being a little too plentiful at all times and the difficulty was even throughout even though it was very hard. The skylines in the DLC felt kind of out of place, but I understand that they wanted to keep some things from the base game to make it an easier transition from each other. Overall, I enjoyed the story and atmosphere but loathed the combat. I strongly suggest this DLC because it sets up the second DLC, which goes further in depth into the origins of certain enimies in the game and bridges the gap between the end of this DLC and the start of BioShock.

    Overall: 7/10
