Mediocre open world with little in the way of reasons to explore it. Mechanically rather uninteresting though the plot is decent enough to push through the hack and slash combat.

pros: beautiful game if you play it at ultra-high settings
the gameplay is fun and easy to understand
    awesome game
cons: impossible to play assassin's creed odyssey now
    PS4 version looks garbage

takes wayyy too long to finish and the ending is not worth it.

At first i was blown away, it was so good and fun and refreshing. But the excitement from the well made prologue slowly withers away and once you start doing some of the content over and over again, you will find yourself bored.

Assassins - i don't know why are they even there anymore, it feels forced and unnecessary.
The last part of the game which will last you between 1-2 hours is great but i do not feel like it was worth it.
It's a step down from AC Oddysey in many ways, which should not happen but i rate it a little better.

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla seems so worried about disrespecting your money that it will instead flagrantly disrespect your time. Needs the middle 20-30 hours chopped out of it.

A glitchy game with a beautiful open world, combat that becomes pretty boring and tedious, and a great story that ends up being really anticlimactic. It is a pretty decent game that had the potential to be one of the greatest games I've ever played.

"1 step forward, 2 steps back"

I'll start by saying like most newly released AAA titles this game is full of bugs. So much so that it is very noticeable and will impact how much you enjoy the game. Looking past this though this is another decent Assassins Creed experience that will provide over 80 hours of content. However, if you enjoyed the previous two titles Origins and Odyssey then this game is going to feel like a downgrade in many ways.

Some returning features or new features that the game has included are assassinating bosses, kill conversations, speech checks, mini-games, dual-wielding different weapons, and raiding. Some of these are very welcome additions that make the game feel fresh. Some removed features or features I wish didn't return are killing civilians will desynchronize you instead of increase your bounty, no bounty system, reduced gear/weapon system, less gear variety/customization, combat is very janky, only one finisher animation per weapon, AI is considerably worse than previous titles, stat tree forces you to grab stats you don't want to get the ones you do want, and gear acquired in some locations cannot be kept when returning to the normal area.

The setting of the game is very interesting and I was hoping for another amazing experience like in Origins and Odyssey (post-launch) but it's clear that the developers were trying to mix both the old and new Assassin's Creed games together in Valhalla. Sadly this meant removing much of what made the new games extremely fun and replacing it with dated mechanics. If I had to sum the game up in one sentence it's "1 step forward, 2 steps back".

Valhalla is a mixed of Origins and Odyssey , but all the mistakes of these two games are in . The Pillage and attack of fortress are too little, and to repetitive and all the outpost are the same .
If Odyssey was really good with writing Valhalla is a deception .
I almost finished the game so my Review may be better than others , if you love odyssey i don't recommend to play this one but if you love Origins go for it . I hope that the Dlc's and mostly the Paris siege are going to blow my mine .

The exploration can become very repetitive - find house, find crack in wall, shoot lock from door, enter house, find chest, repeat. This certainly takes away from the immersion when you are in the middle of a raid/battle and have to take a quick pause to solve a mini "puzzle". These puzzles being trickier and less frequent would have been welcomed, stick to kicking doors off during raids and battles and leave the puzzles for sneak elements of the game.

Visiting establishments outside of quests feels quite empty and hollow, further the game has taken the realistic approach to England for the time period (small wood and dirt establishments with the occasional impressive cathedral). The usual ubisoft coins & helix credit cash grab are present.

Suggest waiting for the price to drop and patches to be released.

Except for some exceptions, the game does not really try to tell us who the vikings were, like the history channels' TV show as a good example in that sense. The story itself takes place in what is today England and the protagonist is not really a true viking, but more of a member of a secret order for (modern) liberalism and tolerance. The vikings saw the Christians as their Ragnarök, and those Christians -were- their Apocalypse, they brought an end of their pagan culture, with the help of the cross and the sword. Some modern Norwegians have rebelled against this act of erasing the Native Norwegian pagan culture, it even got expressed in arts and music, in the black metal scene for example. Ubisoft are pretending to represent a part of history, but they are legitimizing only a flat view of it, players who only play this game would not learn a lot about viking history, or what Valhalla could mean for these warriors. It altogether feels very bland and uninteresting. I will say the character detail, and armor/clothing customization and upgrading system is excellent. I just wish there was more choices of sets compared to odyssey where you could have 30+ entirely unique outfits. Onto the story of Valhalla: it’s not good. You have essentially no choice in various outcomes that Ubisoft makes you think matter. The entire arc as a whole is just so unbelievably dry and devoid of flavor. The romance options feel very forced, and like I said, in many cases no matter what decisions you make the game already has a predetermined outcome. I wanted to love this game, Origins was just a glimpse into the masterpiece that was Odyssey, and I hoped Valhalla would go even further, but it didn’t. ASSASSIN'S CREED VALHALLA is a beautiful looking game that suffers from possibly the worst controls in gaming history, the incompatibility of the ASSASSIN'S CREED series and too much excess baggage. Let me explain:

ASSASSIN'S CREED VALHALLA is a beautiful looking game that suffers from possibly the worst controls in gaming history, the incompatibility of the ASSASSIN'S CREED series and too much excess baggage. Let me explain:
Firstly the CONTROLS: Eivor (player character can either be male or female) controls like a fully loaded Mack truck hauling 3 equally loaded trailers driven by a drunk. But somehow we are supposed to believe that s/he can gracefully scale walls the best ninja wouldn't be able to? Combat is clunky and unresponsive, but the worst offender is the climbing mechanic: shift utilizes an UNintelligent system where the AI assumes what you wish to do - which at least in my case was wrong 95% of the time. Trying to climb down something or getting off something has a 90-10 chance of success. The controls are atrocious! Whoever came up with these should be flayed alive. Add the console-friendly menus to the mix and embrace the suck.
Second issue: IDENTITY CRISIS. The latest ASSASSIN'S CREED games, ORIGINS, ODYSSEY and VALHALLA (probably the preceding ones, too, but I haven't played them) suffer from an identity problem, that is ASSASSIN'S CREED itself. While the original lore of assassins versus Templars draws form the Crusades, the later games' attempt to justify the excursions into Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and per-medieval Viking Age falls flat on its face and is totally unbelievable and outright ridiculous. The ASSASSIN's CREED game mechanics also don't work with the setting itself, a Viking using stealth?! It just doesn't mesh. The last 3 ASSASSIN'S CREED games should not have the AC name and should ditch all AC elements.
Third: EXCESS BAGGAGE: Ubisoft, drop the present timeline with Layla Hassan and the Animus already!!! It's immersion breaking (a deathblow to any Open World game!), the character is annoying and uninteresting. I always skip her dialogues and hit the Animus as soon as the game lets me, which at the first interruption works relatively fast, but later you need to do some quests. Ditch this, or at least let us decide if we want to have this or not (like the gender selection at the beginning it could be an option). There are also lots of annoying cutscenes that drag on which cannot be skipped and a lot of filler content that is just bloating.
There are also several bugs (many MANY crashes, synchronization issues with the forced use of the Ubisoft Connect Program), even over half a year after the game's release. At times my long boat would flip over and become unmaneuverable until I quit out and reloaded the game. Couple that with horrendously long load times and you can imagine how much fun that was.
When the game works properly and you've made it past the annoying cutscenes and Layla sequence and reach England, VALHALLA shines: it is one of the most beautiful looking Open Worlds, hands down. You can get some mileage out of it simply by exploring the vast area. Sailing down the rivers while mist engulfs you is just pure atmosphere and makes you feel like in the movie The 13th Warrior.
I also like the branching skill tree a lot - not overly complex but not too simple either, which allow different play styles (full out assault, bows or stealth assassinations) or mix them to your heart's content.
Unfortunately after a while repetition sets in. And grinding. The world is divided in Power Levels (you gain Power Levels by upgrading your gear and weapons and by investing in the skill tree). However some neighboring regions have such a steep rise in Power Level that hours of grinding and collecting ore, ingots and leather becomes mandatory. Many game mechanics that start out to be fun (raids) soon become tedious and repetitive as well. And once you've uncovered the entire map there's little to keep you playing on. The missions are not very varied either, ranging from fetch quests (a lot of them) to assassinations.
Overall VALHALLA is the best looking AC game with beautiful locations and vistas to behold, but it offers too little innovations to be compelling in the long run - let's face it, Ubisoft has been making the same game over and over and over again with ROGUE, UNITY, SYNDICATE, ORIGINS, ODYSSEY and now with VALHALLA, it just comes with a different paint job. Also Eivor (either gender) is a very bland character compared to ODYSSEY's Kassandra. It's just slightly above average and the fun factor is like a roller coaster ride with ups and downs and unfortunately more downs than ups, especially if you played previous entries in the series.
Oh, and then there's the overly long load times that don't seem to be justified. Also at each startup of the game you are informed about how this game was created by a team of ultra-woke loons of many genders, faiths and nationalities - yes, the cringe-worthy screen greets you every time you start the game and takes a chunk out of your time as well.

The "collectables" flung across the map in uninteresting locations are an excellent touch to the dull design. The combat system is not garbage but it is not at all good. Enemies can spam all abilities while you are left to kite them around until you get enough stamina to do a single hit then kite them around some more. The stealth is pointless and horribly done for an Assassin's Creed game, there is not corner hiding at all, no ducking under cover but they added gore. The only thing it seems Ubisoft focused on was accessibility features. Menu narration, have no idea why that is a feature, text size, among other frivolous features that really add nothing and seem to have been the studios focus. The story is near non existent, you can just skip the entire thing and kill whoever with no lead up at all. No worth while investigation, no getting to know the citizens of the area and helping them out for the greater good, its so far from what the series used to be it shouldn't even be Assassin's Creed. This game is a monument of a lazy development team that just shovel what ever they can out into their fanbase and hope the mindless masses buy it. The music is good when it plays, that rarely happens, even with the music frequency maxed out. Pure waste of potential with this game. As in Odyssey, buildings and parkour is absolutely shunned in-favor of the combat system. Don't mistake me, combat in the modern games is quite fun, but it's not what should be leaned on in a game about assassination, or at least supposed to be...
Aside from this, it is a decent game as a modern Lite-RPG Hell-scape. The story and quests are slightly padded but overall does not entirely overstay it's welcome.

The Wrath of the Druids DLC is better than the base game, but not by much. I wouldn't recommend the DLC if you don't like the base game.
The Siege of Paris (DLC) dragged on to little benefit, truly strengthened my distaste for the game as a whole. Recommend playing it before Druids so you have a decent taste in your mouth on finishing.

The textures in this game look mostly the same as Odyssey. Their is slight improvements to the character modals and of course some aspects do look nicer. But the textures overall haven't improved much at all.
I feel like way to much remains unchanged and that isn't a good thing when spending £60 on a new game. Ubisoft need to stop over working their devs and give them more time to give us a mind blowing experience when we buy a new AC game. I don't wanna pick up a new title and be able to compare them side by side seeing what's new and what isn't. When you compare the original AC games apart its like night and day but now comparing Odyssey to Valhalla is like 12pm to 3pm.

The horse riding in this game feels like something I would have expected 10 years ago. Even the 1st Red Dead Redemption game had better horse riding. The horses feel like they are imported from a car game and then a horse texture has been applied.
Certain textures in the game have a really low resolution and then others look amazing? Like the pin on character modals, Snow, smoke, horses... They all look out of place.

The map in this game makes Odyssey look like a complete planet. Its tiny. At 1st I thought I was just on the tutorial map. Nope that is the map. Like I said if you give the developers more time then they would be able to give us more content. Maps are supposed to get bigger not 1 third of the size. Well if the map is smaller then it must be packed full of content right? WRONG! Some things in this game just felt long and dragged out and didn't drive anything forward. Just unnecessary filler content that felt like just another thing to do and I just wanted to skip over it.

The monetization in this game sucks as well. I feel like Ubisoft are just creaming the series at this point. You can basically buy everything in this game for cash including weapons and XP. When I see that in a game I know not to expect much from it. That's when they no longer care about the games integrity and they are squeezing every last drop out of it and it really shows in the gameplay.
Randomly when I was playing the game, after the tutorial I was given loads of OP items out of no where? I think its cos I was playing the Ubisoft+ version but still things like this ruin the game as its not the way its supposed to be played.

Ubisoft just overall aren't the best place to get games from. I try not to be bias with the stuff I have read the company online. With all their good games they end up killing them with monetization and over saturating the market by releasing a new one every 5 minutes.

I am not saying this game is terrible thou. It just gets ruined by the publisher rinsing it for easy money. The story is overall quite good. Some of the side objectives are fun, like this dice game for example. The combat overall is fluent although unchanged from the previous game, although more healing supplies would be nice. At times I was running round like an idiot looking for health items. I believe this game would have lived up to expectations if it was given more time and wasn't ruined with buyable weapons, armor and XP. I hope Ubisoft gets brought out by a better company.

While the game has some interesting ideas, it focuses too much on what is considered popular in the media and RPG genre: fantasy elements, because Witcher 3 had them and tons of boss fights alongside a large focus on combat, because Dark Souls had it. Which is a shame, because i can see a good game beneath it all, but a lot of the games elements are half baked, sometimes systems in place don't work properly, mostly stealth and climbing: You will find Eivor getting detected through walls or by enemies far beyond range of sight, parkour is frustrating; most of the time Eivor will jump down or go to a wrong place, ignoring player input.
Game looks and sounds beautiful, it's the best part of the entire experience, alongside exploration. Maybe if the game focused on what made the AC franchise great and tried to improve its original parts, instead of focusing on whats popular, the game could have been good, great even. But as it stands, Valhalla overstays its welcome by beign a 300h+ game to fully complete, filled with content and systems that are not compelling enough to justify this sort of game time.

Summary. Decent game - but spongey controls and a game style far removed from AC. This is a game for people who like War for Middle Earth or similar. Double wield axes and go in roaring or don't bother playing at all.

In terms of stealth, assassination and the efficiency of bow combat this is a HUGE step down from even Odyssey and Origins - which themselves were huge steps down from the first few games.

Having played every Assassins Creed game. Most to the end. Some several times. This one looks pretty good but the combat on PC using M+K is spongy and inaccurate.
Firstly, stealth and traditional assassin gameplay is an option for maybe 20% of the game. At most.
If you want to that - don't buy this game. Whereas Odyssey had a little less in the way of stealth than Origins and Origins about the same as Syndicate.
This has a TON less than any AC game I've played (And as I said I've played all of them extensively).
It just isn't an option for most of e game.
This is far more like a game like War for Middle Earth. All about mass melee combat (even bows are VERY seriously nerfed)
That might be Ok if the melee combat wasn't also pretty weak compared with previous games.
Sometimes you can't block, often the knockback on foes does not work, there is a palpable delay between pressing the button and the action taking place. It doesn't feel right at all.
I've loaded up Origins and Odyssey for comparison ad they are both spot on. Valhalla's combat really does feel spongey, delayed and inaccurate.
This is not a game for traditional AC fans. This is a hack and slash game with more in common with Diablo than e legacy of AC. What with that and the really poor feel of controls, this is probably the last AC game I will buy.

Story is ok..first game in years I just couldn't finish, due to boring, dark and depressing story and a serious lack of incentive..

    No armour and weapon drops?
No armour /weapon rewards for big kills?
Feck all armour designs especially light leather armours for sneaky builds.
No dismantling No arrow crafting No transmogrification NPC's actually have better gear No reward in exploring.
No replay value World events incredibly lame Bugs crashes and more bugs
No decent music playing Disappointing customisation options-hair styles are all butch, too many tattoos not enough feminine hairstyles
    Skill Tree-awful awful awful
Raiding-repetitive...well vikings..I'm so over that, they were a nasty bloodthirsty bunch of criminals really Chasing things on rooftops Mini map compass location Poor bird has been downgraded
Killing bosses for no reward (other than to make the world a better place)
No darts-where are my assassin tools? I miss them so much.
Awful finishers happening ALL THE TIME..hate that..no quiet 'Im just walking thru town minding my own business assassinations', no double assassinations..big pause when assassinating, quick time events on assassinating.. No decent light armour in cash shop either

Thats it- its an ok game with some terrible systems dragging it down. It's better to play it in a linear fashion and forget about exploring and hunting down bad guys, its not worth the time and effort.

That is just one of many conglomerated choices much like the dual gender (they can read holographic memories from DNA but can’t tell a male pelvis from a female one) and of course the Sunny D commercial-like lineup of supporting characters. I am sure their various consultants and Twitterati appointments are well-paid and quiet for now.

Even if this game’s only problems were just with the story and game play (new combat is dumbed down), this would be an average game. Of course, that is not the case. The PC port is, in typical Ubisoft fashion, terrible. You really should not expect competence after such a well-documented history of anything but. I will not bother knocking the technical problems because it is your own damn fault if you expect better.

An extremely disappointing step-back from Odyssey. The story is acceptable, and many of the new raid and village-building mechanics are interesting. But it's all overshadowed by the cover-your-eyes awful combat.

It's hard to understand why, but the developers deliberately made the combat mechanics less precise. Perhaps some focus group feedback though Odyssey was too difficult? The parry timing window is now so huge that one may accidentally parry the wrong attack, and parrying itself is no longer necessary to win encounters. Also gone is the combo system from Odyssey, where Kassandra's next light/heavy attack would vary based on where it was in a five attack "combo" sequence. I can only assume this was a botched effort to make the combat easier for "casual" players, but the end result is to turn the combat into button mashing.

Ubisoft also puzzlingly expanded the skill tree and the number of points invested in it. The tree itself is now so huge that you have to scroll and zoom to see it all, like a google maps layout. This means that when you "level up," you can no longer see and feel an instant power difference, as you could in Odyssey. I assume this was to eliminate the "grind" in Odyssey, but a grind is only as boring as the content you're grinding through.

Naval battles, that gem from Black Flag that was partially resurrected in Odyssey, is gone again too.
As for non-combat world interaction, it's so clunky and awful that it feels like something from the PS1 or N64 era. It's a huge step back even from the foundational games of the series. For example, in 2009's Assassin's Creed II, when player-character Ezio walks through a crowd, he twists his body and puts his hands on people's shoulders to move them out of the way. In Valhalla, Eivor either walks through them like they're ghosts or gets stopped dead still like they're a brick wall.

I would add that neither the male for female voice actresses can stand-up to Melissanthi Mahut's portrayal of Kassandra, but that's really an unfair standard. Mahut's performance was one of the best in the history of gaming, comparable with Jennifer Hale (Commander Shepard, Mass Effect), Yuri Lowenthal (Peter Parker, Marvel's Spider-Man), and Roger Clark (Arthur Morgan, Red Dead Redemption 2).

I spent $100 on the deluxe edition without hesitation as a result of the goodwill Ubisoft earned with Odyssey, which was one of the best games of 2018. Valhalla wasn't worth it, and I regret the purchase.

The endgame was a sad experience for me. It could have been a lot more e.g. a long expedition to the east coast of America. If, for some unknown reason, you play Assassins Creed for the story; the story in all of their games seem to have large set peices and at the time appear to be monumental but always end up unmemorable, and fall flat. Except for the crashes, they were all minor concerns for me.
I'm enjoying the game, but the story, writing, and dialogues are all mediocre. There's no real goal, nothing to propel you forward, and you're basically doing the **** for other people over and over again.
The gameplay is enjoyable, but not exceptional, and this is not an AC. It's attempting to link it to the franchise, but it's simply not possible; the parkour is so constrained that 90% of what you could do in unity is lost here.

Imagine being on a wall, looking behind you, and wanting to leap from the wall to another ledge, which is something you can do in every previous game, but you can't do it here. It's quite frustrating.
The hidden blade is practically useless; there is no incentive to go stealth other than to waste time. Eivor isn't even a member of the creed.

There are 5 songs on the boat; I couldn't find anyway to find find or unlock more; imagine sailing for 50 hours with the same 5 songs or just the sound of the water.

Eivor isn't really engaging or charismatic. He serves no actual function other than to serve as a slave to everyone.

Upgrades and all of the weapons' stats and runes seem pointless; all you need is XP and skills to get genuine power.

    So many micro-transactions my god.

This game is so simple, merely reaching the required strength level allows you to demolish anything... To find any challenges, I had to play in a higher power level zone.

This game is empty, no loot drop nothing, and I've discovered 5 weapons in 35 hours.

Technically, the game looks decent, but not great, and visually, it's just plain uninteresting. I'm using HDR, and I'm not sure if the game is bugged, but the colors are occasionally very flat.

Since Unity, I haven't really like any ac, but this one was quite interesting. I adore the Vikings, their history, mythology, and gods, but I doubt I would have played as long if I hadn't already learned about and enjoyed the period. I would have definitely stopped after 5 hours.

I'd like to talk about how this game handles gods, but it would be a major spoiler, and I'm not a fan.

If you're a long-time fan of AC, you'll probably dislike it, or if you do, it won't be the greatest for you.

If you like the new style of ac and odyssey, you'll probably enjoy this one as well. There's less grinding and a level cap, which is a plus.

This game tries to accomplish a lot of things, but it doesn't do any of them better than any other game. It's just okay, so I'll give it a 5.

So, while the games is better than Odyssey, being better than awful does not make you good. I've played every single Assassin's Creed game, and each one has done something that has stayed with me. The music, gameplay, story, writing, and so on. After 25 hours, Valhalla had done nothing to amaze me, no times where I stayed and thought, 'Wow, this is fantastic.'

It doesn't do anything differently from any other action game. And it certainly does not outperform the most well-known RPG on the market.

It's a shame because Valhalla has so much potential, and we all know that ubisoft can achieve greatness and has done so in the past.

But it appears like Ubisoft is simply not trying; they're settling for good enough. They're overly concentrated on developing as many games and microtransactions as possible in order to generate as much money as possible... They're on the wrong track, and I don't want to see the gaming business follow suit.

    1. The sound is abysmal. Very low bitrate and it sounds atrocious.
    2. So many bugs it is insane. Reload savegames to fix bugs or just try to ignore them. But its bugs bugs bugs.
    3. The ending does not make sense at all. The King kills some of your friends, then he turns out to be the leader of The Order and because he is happy the order is destroyed you let him live out his days in exile. Riiiiiight.

    5. The animus stuff is getting boring. Make a game without it. Nobody cares for it.
    6. Please, don't release your next AC game before enough time has been given to fix the loads of bugs.
    7. Also, don't cheap out on game size. I rather have better audio and more GB to download then this piece of junk.
    8. Such a waste of potential. The setting is nice, the world looks amazing but it can not compensate for all the stuff thats wrong with.

Every action has been slow down and and received some form of inertia, which makes everything feel slow, heavy and clunky, from simple movement, to changing direction, climbing and fighting, everything feels like a chore.
To perform some simple actions, like looting a big chest, you now have to call for help and wait until a member of your crew arrives, which is very annoying.
Opening crates and or harvesting is no longer possible, you have to smash the containers or the mineral nodes, wait for them to be destroyed, wait for the loot to pop up and finally spam the loot button cause you can no longer grab everything nearby with a single action...also hitting a container is a freaking lottery because the aim is completely messed up and your character constantly misses the object that is right in front of him.

Combat has lost its flow, it's no longer fast paced and has gained a useless stamina bar, also you can no longer craft arrows for whatever reason...!?
The game constantly take away the control of the camera from you, which could be fine for console but it's extremely annoying for PC; for instance every time you run and call your horse, the camera automatically rotates and show you the freaking ground forcing you to stop and wait for the horse to arrive...and if you try to fix the camera, it automatically turns back in the wrong position...

The map is a mess, icons that showed locations are now tiny white and yellow lights that you can barely see because the map is also white...genius...

Exploration is a pain in the ass, every freaking door is barred and you need to find an alternative hidden entrance or you have to find a oil jar to blow a barricade away, too bad the stupid jar is always hundreds of meters away, turning the whole process into an annoying treasure hunt chore.

Some of the sound effects are very loud and annoying, also some triggers are completely wrong and as you explore you constantly trigger the same sound over and over.

Music is not as good as in Odyssey, but it's ok.
    Voice acting is great.

Valhalla struggles to balance out an Open World with Story and Loot. You have much fewer weapons and armor to loot and one of the core mechanics "raiding" isn't fully fleshed out yet. You get resources only once and it feels more like a "what could have been but isn't" scenario. Horrible Face Animations and weird character movement are one of the points why Mass Effect Andromeda got beaten up pretty hard and i am wondering why almost no one is acknowledging this problem in Valhalla too. Emotionless and dull, that is how every scene between characters are looking.
Assassins in this game are only appearing as a visual "pleaser" but have for the first half no impact in the game or story whatsoever. Probably just to shut down those "It's not an Assassins Game" critics. It doesn't feel like an Assassin Game and also most of the time not like a Vikings Game. You get some little treats of those things here and there but this game is just another bland "Ubisoft Open World" game. At this point i'm just getting tired of the Ubisoft Bullcrap they put out since Origins. Origins was new and refreshing and bumped up my expectations for the Assassins Series again but with Odyssey and Valhalla it went down pretty fast. You can't expect me to praise a game or give credits to it when they just slapped another "theme" on their game and called it a day. Origins had a lot of unique Buildings and i'm missing that in Valhalla. Almost every Church in Valhalla is from the same "Preset" just add a little bit of fire or cracked wooden stuff here and there and here you go. I wish Ubisoft would go back to their former self and at least "try" again.

Parkour is non-existent. Of course, you can climb on the tower etc. but your character will just get stuck, glitch and you will be detected. Okay then, what about assassinations? If you want to assassinate anyone in this game, you have to be either on at least their level, or have a special skill, that you can unlock in a skill tree. From the first trailer I had a impression: they took AC: Odyssey and changed skin for the NPC's and the map. And I was not so wrong.

The game has its differential and its identity, but it is practically the same game with a different appearance, and a story of its own. Several animations are the same, movements, bugs during movement ...

The story is interesting at one point, but with a few "holes" like a "master killer" simply giving a stranger a hidden blade, although they "try" to justify it later, it is still quite strange in terms of lore.

The game has the problem that all AC's since Origins have been having, and getting worse, the game extends too long, there comes a time, when you can't stand playing the game anymore and practically activates the subtitles to see what the NPC's are going to say and skip the cutscenes, instead of the old ones that you were either satisfied with or wanted more from the game.

A point that bothered me a lot, is that at first it seemed interesting how you have a map and choose where you want to go first, this is really fantastic, but what it seems is that each employee was responsible for a part and did not communicate with others what was supposed to happen, for example, Eivor pissed off with some events in an area, which end up even worse, so you have 2 options, continue to the area designated as next, or make another turn to get allies, if you want to get allies, he isn’t pissed off and tries to do everything as quickly as possible to resolve the unfinished business in the previous area, he’s laughing, having fun, talking nice, or anything, and when you come back he's all mad again that you have to do everything as quickly as possible without thinking, swords up and plans are not necessary, and you're like: WTF?

The game is full of bugs, the game crashes, saves corrupt, quick travel is disabled, npcs bug and do not allow to continue a mission, some missions do not complete (I saw cases on youtube, where the guy can not deliver the last mission of the game, because it bugged the conversation with the NPC).

Secondary activities, at first glance, are fun, here called mysteries and artifacts, but 2 of them reach a point that became a nuisance ...
One of them is to run after a papyrus, as in the old games for example AC3, however, there was more "stuck" the issue of parkour, here as everything is scalable, it is very easy for Eivor to stop somewhere, try to climb where shouldn't, and you lose the papyrus and have to do it all over again.
Another is to stack some stones, at the beginning it is fun, relaxing, but it comes to some points in the game, that the type of balance has to be so perfect, in such a specific order of stones, that it is more angry than calming

And on the PC in particular, Ubisoft decided that no game of hers will have Achievments anymore, that for those who don’t care OK but for those who like it, don’t take the PC version, they justified that it was altered by such "challenges" , while on consoles there are 40 ~ 50 achievements, on Uplay there are 10 ~ 20 "challenges" that are things you don’t even have to try to do, like "complete the area, complete the mission", mandatory things, you it kind of ends the game with 100%, there are no achievements like "make all the mysteries of the world", they are simply things related to the main campaign, taking away every challenge from those who liked to put 100% with some real challenges.

Assassin's creed Valhalla is getting back on track in terms of history, especially with the "current" time, however, it is still a game mess, which does not know if it wants to be an RPG or an AC (even because you do not play with an assassin) for the 2nd game in a row, since Origins is the origin so it’s acceptable, you end up as one), where they only use the game’s “fabula” to justify an RPG, full of microtransactions from clothes full of effects, to resource boosts , in addition to the rapid devaluation of the game, on launch day (in my local currency) it was necessary 199BRL for the base game, with nothing, 40 days later, the game with all DLC's is coming out for 219BRL, leaving to whom is the saga fans , with muggle face.

Wait for a promotion, wait for the bugs to be 100%, play with patience, because one hour you will be playing out of obligation, and not for fun.

Loved the game for the first 30-40 hours even though this is probably the most buggy singleplayer game I have ever played. The combat is so underwhelming and the sound design is AWFUL. The story delivery (character expressions and voice acting) and the cinematic experience is the typical ubisoft mediocrity. It had a few good moments but they were far too rare. But I still had a great time exploring the world and farming resources. But the moment I got tired of exploring, is the moment where the game started to drag and become annoying.

Some Story arcs were really good. But most of the later arcs felt so unnecessary and fillerish. The story could have moved on to the Sigurd arc without any of these later arcs. It felt like an actual chore to play-through the story in the 2nd half.

Also the ending felt so lacking that I didn't even realize that it was supposed to be the end.

The game has a really good OST but it is so under-used and miss-used. Story raid music for example where Einar selvik's osts start to play are so good but they are added so quietly that you can barely hear them in the raid.

I just wish the story would have been only half as long. That would have made the game a much better experience.

I'm glad that I'm done with the game.

The Raven is now pretty pointless just showing a general area, replaced with some blurry Odins sight thing which is much less clean and crisp. I liked the old system of the bird tagging the enemies, to me it was a good assassin sitting with a notebook and noting down routes and guard changes, I have no idea what the blurry red things are actually doing and with not the best eyesight in the world it makes the game much less enjoyable.
I hope they will rethink it and bring it back, maybe as an optional.
Then there's the sound - I make so much noise when sneaking through bushes (sounds like someone wearing army boots and brand new jeans and apparently carrying a load of bubble wrap) I simply can't understand the entire enemy camp not hearing me and I can't seem to find any way to switch it off, discouraging when I have a sneak build.
Final remark, side quests that don't appear in the quest log, seem to be in notes when they are anywhere at all but sometimes not even there, and don't allow completion for any number of ridiculous reasons that have nothing to do with the actual side quest itself, both Origin and Odyssey had no problem with this so I have no idea why Valhalla is getting it wrong.
Other than that its a solid RPG but I'm afraid the issues are wearing me down, I doubt I'll finish it.
    Edit for further play time
Still playing this as I like to be thorough. Re my above comments the sound issue seems much better once getting to England. Still having problems completing quests and have to do an awful lot of saves and reloads to get certain things to move forward (so they are working, just somehow not getting completed). I am supposed to have a wolf fighting alongside me, if he does he's invisible. Eivor sometimes talks to him but nada, he's back at the longhouse apparently sleeping on top of a candle at the foot of my bed and the Raven is still completely pointless.
Its fun but still lots of niggles and if I'm honest I wish I'd waited for several gameplay patches before purchase, Ubisoft really need to fix some bugs. I won't be changing my score until some improvement is seen.

Voice acting is well done for the most part. The voice actors for Eivor (male) and Sigurd were spot on.
The game is absolutely gorgeous. Primary character models are textured and designed well.
The addition of 'Flyting' is a mechanic I did not expect would be fun.
    The praise ends there.
Mediocre game at best not worth the price of entry. Ubisoft made it blatantly clear with Origin and Odyssey that they have little respect for their consumers with their cash-shop. Nothing has changed here. They've also delivered on continuing to show a lack of respect for your time by constantly wasting it on frivolous tasks ad tedium by marketing these events as 'Exploration' mechanics when it is nothing more than bloat. The UI HUD display for marked items is incredibly inaccurate and does not represent proper verticality. The HUD does not always display points of entry for well hidden items often requiring a significant time investment to locate marked items for even the most mundane category. Had these searches been limited to items of notable interest this would not be an issue but it is far too prevalent for simple resource caches.
In almost every way this game is a step back from it's predecessor. The combat is disconnected, clunky and slow. The addition of a stamina bar generates extra complication where no additional complexity was needed. The skill tree system prevents players from truly creating a 'build' to compliment their vision of play. Locating abilities can be random and egregious if you are playing blind, adding an additional level of unwanted or unneeded complexity.
In a franchise built around stealth mechanics, this title falls flat on it's face. Introducing the ability to 'Blend' into areas is a fan service with criminally poor execution.
The Loot system while a step in the right direction, flounders without a substantial time commitment.
Side Quests are short and sweet but also lacking context and direction in a few instances. Some are also bugged and incompletable.
The parkour mechanics are not as tight and polished as they were in Odyssey making some collectibles a rage inducing practice in futility.

This game is not a terrible game by any stretch of the imagination but it is far from good. It is clear that Ubisoft is attempting to milk player's time as much as they can in an effort to steer people towards their cash store which is clearly evident due to how much bloat is just beneath the surface of the core game. You can still play and enjoy this game without spending a penny, but the fact that time saver purchase-ables exist should be indicative of Ubisoft's endgame here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When this game was announced, I was unconvinced. Why? Because in my mind, the concept of a secret order of assassins who use stealth and parcour and hidden weapons to assassinate from the shadows does not quite fit to the vikings that usually are portrayed in movies, TV shows and games - angry and reckless barbarians charging into battle while yelling obscenities.

Now, you might say "But why not shake up the formula and try something new?" Well, sure, do that. But if you move too far from the actual "topic/theme" of the series, ASSASSINS, it becomes kinda silly. No, I did not like Black Flag, and I am not happy with this one. Black Flag was a FUN PIRATE GAME. This could be a great game for the TV show "Vikings". But unfortunately, these are supposed to be Assassins Creed games, and that's where they fail IMO.

The mix of some stealth and some fan service (members of the Assassins order teaching you assassin techniques) do not mix with new mechanics like raiding a monastery or fortress with your fellow vikings. The concept of secrecy and stealth go out the window when there is quite some emphasis on you blowing a horn to get your fellow vikings to charge into battle.

This looks like a spin-off game for that show, and it may be cool if it was that. But to me, it misses the mark when it comes to AC. If I would have wanted a "play a viking, conquer England" game, this would be a great choice. But I was looking forward to the newest episode of a franchise revolving around assassins. It says so "on the tin", so what the heck?

Also, this often feels like a themepark. I LOVED Origins, and it did a great job at reinventing the franchise, doing away with many things that were standard in the series, making it much more of an open world game. Odyssey followed in those footsteps, being even bigger, but coming with TOO much filler and side content and not enough actual assassin-gameplay.

This is pretty much the same. After the "300/greek mythology" themepark (Odyssey), this just feels like another theme stretched over the same mechanics without too much innovation or new stuff. People have been making fun of the "Ubisoft fluff" for quite some time... all those markers on the map, irrelevant and repetitive side content. And here, we have that same thing going on. Wherever you go, you have markers for side quests, loot chests etc.

And some of those side quests are fun, others are silly. THe first few side quests involved one that was pretty immersive and several ones where I had to escort and protect someone who had lost his mind. I am not kidding. I had 3 side quests in a row where I had to deal with someone who was out of his miond and thought he was a king or a knight, getting into trouble. Also, I followed someone who sleepwalked through a mountain area and used a rope slide WHILE SLEEPWALKING WITHOUT WAKING UP. Sorry, that was pretty silly.

The shield mechanics are ok, remind me of Dark Souls (blocking/parrying) a little bit, but are really nothng to write home about.

The raiding stuff is ok. However, after abozut the third monastery you raid, it gets really repetitive. You call for help to open doors or chests, you fight enemies and you start hating the AI, because your "comrades", your companions have a tendency to constantly get between your enemy and you. No friendly fire here, but it still is quite annoying.
The enemy AI isnt much better. With a fast weapon (I used daggers a lot) you can easily stunlock an enemy. The "skirmishers" are incredibly annoying, as they keep repeating their one maneuver, a weird jump attack, over and over. Predictable and easy to avoid? Yes. Engaging and fun tactical gameplay? Nope.

The story is ok, even though after all the shows dealign with vikings, it gets a bit tiring to see all those allegories and hints at Norse mythology. And dont get me started at yet another protagonist out for revenge because his parents were killed. Yawn.

Anyway. I really was not convinced after the announcement. Dont get me wrong. This is a nice viking game, if you are looking for one. Just like BF was a nice pirate game. Unfortunately, these are supposed to be AC-games and fail at it.

    In a nutshell:
    - Not much innovation. This is just more of what Origins and Odyssey did with some slight changes.
    - Boring main character with a boring story.
    - Lack of assassin gameplay, as we now are supposed to raid with a screaming group of vikings
    - Tons of repetitive side content and filler stuff
    - Stupid AI

    + Nice graphics
    + Great soundtrack
+ The few stealth elements are nice, like hiding in crowds etc. AC2 had that a long time ago, and it's back in this game.

Nice viking game, but a lackluster AC-game, sorry.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my first game in AC universe after Assassin's Creed II and be honest i really disapointed. General idea is great, vikings, Odin and all other things allways in top charts. But after Witcher this game looks like a cheap copy. Let's say i went to quest location not strait but thry the village where i found infor that one of NPCs works for both sides, after you comming to quest zone where you see this NPC and in dialogue you still do not have any option to say that he is traitor. After some time information about that will appear and you will even have a quest to confirm that. Seriously is it so hard to add additional triggers. Or let's say you are cleaning some village from enemies and next time when you will pass thru you char will say like: "I should be carefull here, there is guards.". I not a big fan of "next gen" graphic but i think it's not ok when fire and birds looks like a gif picture in game, which is cost more that 50$. Story is predictable like a movie from 80's. Amount of bugs just horrible. In my case i faced not working triggers, NPCs have been stuck on the way or just in hills. In case of my friend he went to Asgard earlier than should, died there several times and decided to go back to increase his lvl. But after that game just crashes and he is not able to play it again and support told to start game from begining. Rly? All locations are big but empty. With maximum settings i can see proper and biutiful world just i several meters around me. In my region this game cost 27$ and i think this can be fare price for such quality but i cannot say that this is real triple A game. Expand

Having to find skills is also just a waste of time, until then your combat is dodge/parry then fast hit/slow hit. I have yet to see another weapon. I get Odyssey had too much equipment, but this is opposite, why its hard to moderate is beyond me.

no mini map sucks as well, half the time you will end up pressing select and going to world map.

Yeah, complete different story from this years cyberpunk, lot of bugs I mean lot of them, but I don't expect bugs from fuc*ing game that looks and plays like a game from 2015. I think the idea of the story is very potential but the processing is sh*t. Really repetitive gameplay and boring battle system. Overall big disappointment.

The whole city building stuff is not only boring its also unnecessary. In 23h of gametime i got 11 (!!!) weapons. And the loot is not only very rare its also boring as hell. You basically find it nowhere; bosses dont drop any and the world is so empty i wish you good luck at finding it yourself. Also it seems like every character is based on the facial motion tracking of Mark Zuckerberg thats how much emotions there are in their facial expressions. But all that was not a killer for me. What made this game so boring I stopped playing it after 23h was the fighting system. It is so dynamic and thrilling you could almost mistaken it for minecrafts fighting system. Fighting felt like chopping wood. Always. the. same. movements. I didnt believe the critics because i thought it cant be that bad and till now i enjoyed every single AC game. But I wished I listened to the reviews. Expand

The game itself is atmospheric, the Viking style is a big plus, but I have a main complaint about women in this game, if you added a lot of main female characters, make them at least beautiful.

    Negative:
    * I would describe the narrative as soulless. I did not care for any character at any point
    * the sheer size of the map and quests is bloated. even then, few things to do outside of main quests feel rewarding
    * most jarring as an AC fan: the world feels less believable than fairly ever. i do not feel like i am in the viking age. i could excuse many small issues in previous titles as i still felt the core was thruthful and i felt in the world. i do not here.
    * the main quest: this is where most of any narrative falls or stands. in this case, well, it is somewhat refreshing not to search for the apple of all damnation. however, the alternative is just bland. invade england, take all. there was so much potential for ethical thoughts that are dear to the AC series. the church is corruptive but keeps order, the vikings are honest but destroy. however, nothing of that gets explored

    Summary:
The series has strayed far from its core storytelling, but kept it s main user satisfactory gameplay. Graphics are decent (but far from jaw-drapping), gameplay smooth (but ultimately nothing new) and the world somewhat big but also bland. It is fun to go around, but should be condensed to 1/3 of it s play or boosted by actual narrative

Before I go on to rate this I will explain the background I come from so you can understand.

Before I go on to rate this I will explain the background I come from so you can understand.
For a Long time, I have been an AC fan, my First AC game was in fact AC1 on the PS3, It was also the first game I paid for after saving a lot of my parents' lunch money. I spent and enjoyed my time in that game so much. At the time I never knew there was a sequel, so seeing the box for the first time had me surprised and gitty. So I saved and bought that one too and AC II blew my perspective of games out of my mind. So years went on, I Played AC Brotherhood and Revelations, Waited for ACIII and was also amazed by it. AC Black Flag wasn't bad too and then came AC UNITY, and the Last AC Game I played, Syndicate.

Then something changed, something I've been noticing ever since Unity, The Helix Credits the weirdly marketed content, well that didn't matter because a New AC game was coming out. To my surprise, It wasn't an AC game at all. It was some RPG, Damage based game with soft stealth...This is where my Disolvement of this franchise began and it continued for more than Half a Decade. AC in my Eyes was truly dead.

But why am I playing Valhalla then, I like it don't I, oh yes I do. No, I hate this game right down to its core. Let me tell you why?

-Stealth mechanics are some really basic implementations complemented by rubbish-looking animations.
-Poorly Reused assets, I understand that reusing assets is a normal thing in the game industry but Ubisoft literally used pretty much every asset they made over the 5 years and used it right in front of your face. Literally, the first female character you meet uses assets from Odyssey.
-Poor Combat Mechanics, The combat is a hack and slash with glorified finishers. It feels like a High budget mobile game.
-Animation Feedback, I don't know who did the animations but it all feels so generic there is nothing that feels high quality anymore.
-Character, Eivor is a boring character with a cheap past to make him/her important.
-Boring level Design, Are We still claiming things to see things? Damn. It's understandable that you want the player out there in the world but who cares if there aren't interesting things to do?

AC Valhalla uses every trend, marketability, lazy development trend, and modern gaming feature in existence to make sure that it makes money.
And funny enough people like this. I get it people like content, but is quantity really good as quality?
Personally no that's why I've waited for so long.

So if every single thing about this game is designed so cheaply, why am I playing it, why are other people playing it?

For me at least I am playing it so I get to see where the franchise is and what exactly not to do If I ever Work for Ubisoft or make a game myself.

For other people, it may seem normal for Assassin's Creed to be like this as it made it easier for them to play. Sadly for veterans like me, we are not so fooled.

Anyway, I am going to rate this what it feels like after playing a bit of it.
If I ever finish this game I will update but after playing I guess over 10 hours it feels like a 5/10. This is not an AC game. It is half of something like it was made in such a rush.

I'm going to be here a while...Oh did I mention this game also tried to destroy my PC by running in unlocked mode and in 4K on start-up, I mean geez Ubisoft, It's bad enough that this game sucks, now you want to suddenly test my PC's hardware on 100% Utilization across the board.

    Definitely don't do that again.

Lengthy tedious plot without any interesting parts or twists - go, do some biddings, crown your guy, mark county as a friend.

If Odyssey was Origins 2.0 which improved everything that an already solid game had, now we're back at the beginning with Valhalla being Origins 0.5.
After the first couple of hours with a smooth transfer between animations and cinematic gameplay in a setting that looks interesting even despite the fact that for the past 5 years everything seems to be about Norse history and mythology, everything suddenly changes into a painfully boring routine of filler story arcs with the main story being present only for a few minutes after you finish one of them, before you start another, and from the half of the game not even that anymore.

Valhalla is an awfully lengthy game with a progressive reduction in quality of just about everything the more time you spend with it, making it feel like your favorite sitcom that turned to trash after 5 seasons, but you still put up with it because of how much time you've already spent watching it.
I was glad that Ubisoft at least improves their reskinned sequels, because Watch Dogs 2, Odyssey, and even The Division 2 turned out to be solid games, where the developers learned from their mistakes, but somehow it's not the case anymore, and I have no explanation why these third installments using the same formula are failing again in even those aspects and mechanics that were already fixed.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a great-looking open-world game with impressive landscapes and cinematography. However, the checklist collectible open-world still needs some work to feel truly engaging, and combat is too tedious and too frequent to be compelling. As a lapsed fan of Assassin's Creed trying to see if I can click with the series once again, Valhalla didn't quite hook me as I was hoping it would.

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a lot of fun and easy to sink dozens of hours into. It is the best entry in the more recent trilogy and genuinely elevates the gameplay mechanics. Content could be considered somewhat bloated still, but it is diverse enough and the setting and story is solid most of the way through.

Sneaking is fun, fighting is fun, walking through the great outdoors is so much fun. Sightseeing too! Valhalla is free minded and could be innovative, but lacks skills to persuade its players about that. [Issue#308]
