I'm not a big fan of the changes. Compared to the combat in Shadows of Mordor or some of the better Assassin Creed games this is a huge let down.

That said the city of Paris is amazingly detailed. I've never been but playing this game makes me want to visit. It would be fun to walk around the building with an Oculus Rift.

Seems like reasonably good entry into the AC series... if it actually ran on PC. Working with an i7-4770, 16GB RAM, SSD, and nicely-OC'ed 290x, I get sub-30 FPS a good amount of time at 1080p at very high with many graphical glitches. There were definitely some inexcusable corners cut in optimization (no wonder Ubisoft refused to give early copies for review). Audio also has some very strange specialization, much like the PC port of Thief.

I feel like I'm trying to run a PS2 emulator on a 7-yr old computer with this game.

Sadly, four or more months after release, this game is still a hot mess of bugs. I waited, knowing the game was buggy at launch, purchasing it over a week ago. Between the graphical glitches, getting stuck on walls, random freezes, random controller drop outs… I just.

I want to like this game. Hell, I want to PLAY this game. But this game is doing everything in it's power to stop me.

Pros: It is well written so far. Voice acting is great. Nice character models.
Cons: An absolute train wreck of glitches, horrendous frame rates and technical failure.
Quick early warning: Wait for patches and read/watch reviews before buying.

    1. The game itself without all the technical bullsh!t put aside. (I.E Framerate, stuttering)
    2. The game with all the technicals.

    1:
If I was to just review the game itself discarding all the technical issues I would say the game is f*cking amazing. Ubi has significantly improved upon the existing game and has brought the game back to the vision of AC2. A stealth focused game. Heaps to do, love the new parkour system, makes running through areas with chest high walls not a problem. I hate the new combat system, the only reason I hate it is because its really hard, which is a good thing. This time around you actually need to try. Lots of new animations to the game. Your character feels like he as weight and mass. The crowds are massive but don't serve any purpose other then to fill the streets. So there pretty much useless. The story seems average. I have not completed it but its hard to keep up. Co-Op seems like a good idea but is heavily broken (Will discus in second part of review) and theres character customization. Heaps of gear and weapons to buy. So that sums up the experience and I would give it and 8/10

    2:
Now, this part will explain everything I stated above but with the FPS/Stuttering/Freezing/Random Audio Loss included. I'll cut right to the chase. This is bullsh!t, the game is unplayable. Constant stuttering, FPS drops. ABSOLUTELY UNPLAYABLE. You walk down the street and your character starts teleporting around and the game freezes and all of a sudden your some where else. I can handle the minor issues like A.I f*cking up, texture popping, A.I randomly appearing. BUT I CANNOT HANDLE THE STUTTERING AND FPS DROPS. 4/10

Side note: The game features micro transactions to allow you to unlock equipment faster. W.T.F Ubi, are you trying to be the next EA.

the AI is the worst i have experienced in a AC game
combat is not improved its worse it does nor feel like its responding to your commands it looks fluent in the animation department but it does not feel fluent like before

the lvling system and collectibles what on earth were they thinking it is almost like it could be a free to pay!

the story has lost its grandeur of previously AC it lacks in Ambitions and Suspense

the new free-running is nice with the exception of windows. you would think that a parkour expert would be able to get into a window with far less hassle.

the plot/dialogue on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired. it's hard to find any credibility in an opener when some unknown caller with a false name tells you within a minute of talking to you that there is a centuries old conspiracy and battle between good and evil, templars and assassins, and that YOU are suddenly one of the chosen ones. yeah right, pull the other one, it's got bells on ... as believable as the one about the Nigerian president's ex-wife wanting to transfer 1259509 billion into your account, etc... but some people do fall for that so go figure ...

co-op features are interesting and should be further developed. micro-transactions fail. unity app fail.

The story of the elder races and how our past is not what is told to us is a wonderful concept that can be a legendary IP that most players would love and remind merrily even after years. And Ubi was doing a wonderful job twisting the story and surprising players.

    Until Assassin's Creed: Unity.

I wanted to love this game, I really did. I played it for a certain amount of time, not dwelling on it's bugs and/or faults. But again, even a fan has his own limits.

First of all: bugs. Lots and LOTS of bugs. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I fell through the ground, stuck inside a wall or a cabinet or couldn't catch a ledge and fell to an assassin's worst enemy: gravity. I'm used to bugs in open world games: you can't expect a game to be non-linear and bug-free. But combination of a buggy game play with really serious performance issues leaves scars on you.

Why do this game requires a great hardware anyway? Shadow of Mordor has better graphics yet my hardware was more than enough to play it. I mean I can agree that it doesn't have crowds, superb animations or a lot of water and/or reflections but it was way better in terms of both optimization and hardware/beauty ratio.

Another thing about this game is controls. Those damned controls. I've played all other assassin's creed games and while they didn't feel as fluid as this game (in terms of both animations and climbing mechanics) but they let me do what I want to do or how I want to kill my helpless targets. But this game always blocks my progress by not letting me out of cover, stepping on a board that is literally only centimeters higher than the ground I'm on, jump on the platform I want and air assassinate the target I want to air assassinate. Seriously, when you take controls out from a game that requires you to be fluid and synchronized is like eating rice without a spoon or a fork: you are randomly using tools, hoping to do what you want to do.

Storyline of the era (which is the era of French revolution) is really nice, even though I've no idea how French revolution went in real life. But the story line that I fell in love with (that is the previous race and how humans are created) feels like it's gone to toilet. We don't have a main character, we are just this anonymous player who plays Abstergo product but that's it. No more "let's go outside of the simulation and discover truth about whereabouts, missions and state of today's assassins and templars".

Conclusion: This game had the potential to be something big yet it failed to deliver what it was supposed to be, both as story and game mechanics.

The voice actings pretty good, the characters seem somewhat interesting (not spectacular, but good), and the story is pretty awesome (the french revolution is my favorite part of history). What keeps this game from being absolutely obliteratingly amazing is its absolute HORRIBLE optimization. AND IT'S NOT EVEN JUST ON PC. PS4 players as well as some Xbox One players are having trouble as well. Also, the MINIMUM requirements are a 680. That tells you what kind of graphics you're getting into. The RECOMMENDED specs, probably what was used to play it, uses an i7 3770 with 8 gigs of RAM as well as a freaking 780! Jesus, no wonder everyone is having trouble. As for the port to PC, there are plenty of glitches, and I expected that, but that many were unacceptable. And honestly, even with a freaking 980 (watching the gameplay from my friend with an awesome PC) it stutters and lags and freaking annoys the hell out of us. So, Ubisoft, Fix the game. Make it more optimized for PC and consoles, and maybe then, MAYBE THEN, I'll consider giving it the 8 I was going to give. Thank you for your time. Expand

In one instance I attempted to move down into cellar to "rescue" an individual, where stealth was key I tried to avoid all enemies as much as possible, moving stealthily into position in the dead of night unfortunately Arno decided to hop from side to side alerting every character within eye view to my exact location drawing enemies from all areas. Ubisoft have tackled the moving down elements of scaling a building only to fail at the basic of moving down when at ground level. On a performance level it struggles along on an i7 3770K with GTX 970 FTW in tow, often dropping to the mid 20s, to be fair I am running at max, but why shouldn't I when I paid a lot of money to be able to max games out. The final nail in the coffin of this already emaciated, rotting corpse is Ubisoft's decision to include microtransactions in a £50 game. Pure unadulterated greed is all it can be described as. I really hope Ubisoft press the restart button on their next outing or this really should be in the end for them. My sympathies to the designers because it can look beautiful, unfortunately a lamborghini with no exhaust will blow itself out pretty quickly and this game has done so with so much style. A cobbled together mess that really needs updates, tout de suite. Expand

    Now the bad:
A lot of the same stuff as the previous AC games. This game is just a copy of the other AC games in a new coat. That is litterally it. Combat is very slow and sluggish, it has nothing of the good old, fast gadget using Ezio. Arnoud is slow, sluggish and does not feel liek a real acrobate. Which is not that bad, since it gives the game a more realistic feeling, but....

    THE PERFORMANCE!1! OMG!
I have played consoleports and I have played consoleports, but never have I played something like this. My rig can play BF4 med on 1080p on 120fps stable, Watch_Dogs on 60 stable on high, yet AC:U cannot get over 40 with 720p and everything low/off. And it doesn't even look decent on low. The entire game is painful for the eyes and all the enjoyable fluent gameplay is killed due to the performance issues. Compared to this, they even did a good job with Watch_Dogs.
AI is bad and guards sometimes just disappear when they lost track of you, as if they magically re-enter their original guard-duty-path. Plus, I was stuck on multiple occasions, and had to reload entire memories to play on.

Untill the performance issues are fixed, this game is not worth getting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start by saying that I've played every single AC game ubisoft has released.
That being stated, and clear, I really tried to like this game, I mean I've been waiting for it for a lot of years now, and I got really hyped about it.
Note: I won't even speak about graphics or optimization, my computer ran if perfectly, thats all.
Now, lets get straight to the story. We all remember how the stories of the other AC games started really strong into action, sailing, getting born, etc. This game starts with you stealing an apple and then seeing your father die. You never get to that point in the story where you feel like you have enjoyed the game, or achieved something AT ALL.
Ubisoft focuses on changing combat for every single game, and this time, I have to say it feels clunky. Combat for AC 3 and AC: Blackflag was much better than combat this time. It just feels like if you play alone, you are done.
Parkour system is broken and unresponsive. That is all I have to say about it because it is frustrating. You can't do simple jumps from a surface to the other, but you CAN jump 10m from rooftop to rooftop.

Conclusion: I really tried liking this game, I've been expecting it and I've played them all. I mean if you are a real fan you know we've been expecting to see what happened to Desmond, but all the interaction we get with the outer world is a view from what seems to be a screen...

Oh well, you get a 4 because I loved your past games, but I'd rate this much lower. If you are a real fan, don't destroy your blackflag memories playing this one. Better skip it, it is not involved in the main plot anyways.

I was willing to forgive the glitches since I didn't get nearly as many (Waited a week and a half to play it since I played Rogue first), but the cliche ending was horribly written and completely ruined an otherwise 7/10 game. Ubisoft's hired a bunch of 15 year old boys to write this one, it's worse than Mass Effect 3.

I've played version 1.5 and it is still bugged. Most annoying part - I've got constant crashes just in the end in sequence 12. Beside that game is one of the most boring AC ever. Repetitive gameplay and story. I appreciate refreshed game engine and fact that creators wanted to make assassination more stealth like, however i was still able to kill all enemies using brute-force.

Stunning graphics (and facial animations) can’t hide the huge amount filler missions / collectibles and awful implementation of the traditional Assassin’s Creed parkour / free-running system. Unity is easily one of the more frustrating entries in the franchise. Oh, and there are co-op missions. Not that anyone is playing.
Total size on my hard drive: 49.4 GB

+ Great graphics. The level of detail is superb. Facial animations are generally great too.
+ Loved the massive crowds. Blending into a crowd feels completely natural.
+ Co-op works well, though good luck randomly finding anyone to play with.
    + Well-optimized on PC in 2017.
    + Great soundtrack.
+ Ubisoft was clearly trying for Ezio 2.0 with Arno Dorian; he is charming one instant and grittily determined the next. A good character, even if his arc is something we’ve seen before from Ubisoft.

+/- The story is… odd. Someone brings a blindfolded Templar into the Assassin headquarters (seriously?!). Another has a traitor taking extreme action because – he wasn’t good at arguing, wasn’t able to convince someone of his point of view? Things frequently happen because the plot needs them to happen, not because they make any particular sense.

    - Many story elements feel half-baked. A sword of Eden? Where did it come from? Who made it? How did wind up in France in the 14th century? What is its significance to the sage? No clue.
    - Arno’s Eagle vision doesn’t function like Ezio’s or even Edward’s. It only serves to highlight enemies and objects of interest – it can’t trace the steps of patrol patterns.
    - An attempt to introduce boss battles mostly fails. The final boss starts well, but ends as a joke as the exact same pattern can be repeated multiple times to win – the boss never adjusts to a particular tactic.
    - Poorly designed assassination missions. Either too easy or too hard. I breezed through almost every 5-star difficulty mission, but died repeatedly on several 3-star missions.
    - Edge-detection, so important in a parkour / free-running game, is some of the worst in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. There are some classic gifs of Ezio, Altair, and others randomly leaping to their deaths, getting stuck on merchant stalls, and the like. But this kind of thing happens so often in Unity it’s not funny. Worse, it creates issues when trying to stealth. Sometimes Arno will slip through a window when asked, other times he perches on edge of the roof like an idiot, twitching but not going through the window. Sometimes he’ll go in the direction the camera is facing; more often, though, he’ll go across the camera. I understand that optimizing a world of the size of Unity’s would require a titanic amount of work, but it doesn’t feel like Ubisoft even optimized their algorithm, formula, parameter, or what ever it is they used for the edge-detection.
    - The delay before standing up from a chest, or taking off running, or getting back on your feet after being knocked down is programmed into the animation. I though it was input lag at first, but it’s not. I wonder who the idiot was who thought that was a good idea. Combine this with the issues with edge-detection, and AC Unity is easily one of the most frustrating games I’ve ever played.
    - Combat is heavy-footed and clumsy. No more kill-chains. Or counter kills. You can dodge-roll, though...
    - Too many collectibles. Most provide nothing except the satisfaction that comes from seeing a completely clean map.
    - Many meaningless side-missions, if they can even be called that. Go to the Assassin icon on the map, get the briefing, walk around a corner, stab someone, voila! Mission completed.
    - Meaningless street missions. Catch a thief, prevent a citizen from being killed, kill the criminals. It will all happen dozens of times.
    - Accumulate money fast. Makes the collectibles even more meaningless.
    - Paris looks flat and boring from the roof-tops. Few landmarks means you’ll be constantly referring to your map just to find your way around.

Assassin’s Creed Unity does feel like a massively expanded Brotherhood. But there is no Volpe, no Machiavelli, no Leonardo, and we’re not fighting the Borgias. The vendetta in Unity is on a personal level, and what made previous assassins (and Ezio in particular) special is that they found a way to rise above the petty grievances to work for a cause greater than themselves. In contrast, Arno joins the assassins in a fit of anger and spends much of the game seeking his personal revenge, only caring about the Creed in the final voice-over. Unity’s beautiful game-world becomes the backdrop to a blah story, a massive amount of collectibles and horrible parkour – all of which scream of a missed opportunity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Assassin's Creed Unity launched on PC in such a poor state that it has taken me till 2018 to actually be able to play and run it. Nonetheless, I didn't judge the game and this review won't really be about the PC port though it does factor into my opinions of it somewhat. Assassin's Creed Unity was built in a brand new engine, this is clear and it shows with the amount of bugs that as of 2018 still plague the game. Paris looks washed out and the graphics are muddy, though I suppose this fits the aesthetic of the time. I don't go to an assassin's creed game for graphics though, I go for the story and the history! And does Assassin's Creed Unity nail the French Revolution? Not really, no. Arno's story barely even mentions the revolution and I feel that his fragmented mess of a narrative could literally have been shoehorned into almost any Assassin's Creed game to date if a couple of names and details were switched. The narrative arc for a character which started out as a witty Ezio 2.0 was promising for the first two hours but slowly fell apart, leaving him feeling more like a Farcry character than a real protagonist and his supporting cast aren't much to go on either, other than Pierre Bellec who ***Spoiler*** ends up killing the Grand Master of the assassin's for speaking to Arno's love interest Elise who was a Templar. What a tragic end to the only remotely likeable character in the game and that's only because he called me pisspot. The story arc itself literally cannot make its mind up regarding the direction of the narrative it flicks between Bellec to the Templar Grandmaster at one point so jarringly that I thought I'd accidentally skipped a memory. The game also likes to shoehorn in famous people that we've all heard of like Napoleon despite the fact he didn't really bring much to the game and leaves out anybody solely important to the French Revolution like Maximillien Robespierre (other than a cheeky mention at the beginning as he is admitted into the party.)
The new detective mode is pretty decent too, but I think Syndicate did it way better. So, why did I give it a 4 instead of a 0 if I thought it was a useless Assassin's Creed game? That would be because of the combat, it's heavy, meaty and satisfying as well as highly customiseable. I loved toting a heavy old great sword and sweeping the floor with patriots and I think the weapon and armour system was a step in the right direction- perfected now by Origins. Mechanically, it's almost beautiful as a game, but as a story narrative game this was sorely lacking.

For this I have an example: From 1 to brotherhood of blood, to climb roofs you need 3 buttons from Assassin's Creed 3 to Unity two buttons, but with Unity, you need to press 4 buttons while reacting to the Down behavior of the character, so progress for 2014 is visible on the face. Then fight is something at all if more than 2 enemies attacked me, I just stay on one place and dying because me easier to die than kill 3 or God forbid 4 enemies when in 1 Assassin's Creed I could kill more than 7 enemies, but Ubisoft doesn't care but they did it with another enemy. And also feeling the Assassin's Creed even the pirate could use the enemy as a human shield, but not Arnaud, although he doesn’t even know how to make a double kill without training. I don’t complain about FPS with GTX 1050Ti at 40 fps on the roofs, it’s normal. The plot is a separate ROFL, but the only reason I don't put 1 it's a plot.

There are loads of things to do in this open-world RPG, but there is zero motivation to do any of them, I can't quite put into words how disappointed I am with this game, the world feels great but the only thing I want to do in it is to climb up to the top of Notre Dame and enjoy the view. The only good bit of the story is up to escaping the bastille, from there it's all downhill.

And finally I went through this tedious mud, called Unity. First, about the pros: the graphics have stepped far ahead compared to the previous parts and, perhaps, that's all. The plot, narratives, characters and eclecticism in the game are simply miserable and resemble another cheap slag series from Netflix. This is a hack on vegetable oil and a soulless dummy. Apparently, the developers, every single force, threw on a breakthrough, compared to the previous Black Flag, graphics, absolutely spitting on everything else. Well, it didn't work - the game failed miserably and was spat on by both critics and the gaming community.
The characters, with the exception of Pierre Bellek, are absolutely soulless, and their motives and actions are like in a bad, fake tabloid play; they are absolutely not realistic, you do not believe them, do not sympathize and do not empathize. The main character had a huge potential, but it was not revealed at all.
The whole game is one long quest "hunt down and kill". No drama, no conflict, no twists and turns of the plot, everything is just insanely bland, stretched and dull.
Paris is made relatively well, there is life in it, however, the atmosphere and spirit of revolutionary France is not felt from the word at all.
The combat system was also redesigned, which became more arcade, unrealistic and inconvenient.
A stupid pricing system, when a bottle of medicine costs more than the restoration of a three-story mansion in Paris, but many games sin like this.
In all the previous parts of the series, your weapons and armor practically did not play a significant role in the gameplay, and more expensive equipment allowed you to play a little more comfortably. In Unity, everything is different. Here you will be required to save huge amounts of money to buy a sword, a lot of armor/clothing items, and you will spend hours and days doing countless boring side quests, if, of course, you want to play comfortably. Otherwise, the gameplay turns into a continuous torment. You will be killed with a single blow, and in order to kill a simple opponent, you will need to chop him from head to toe with your low-level saber.
There was also a place for a strong, independent woman who decides everything herself. It is a pity, it is impossible to spoiler, or I would tell about the insanity that guides the thinking and actions of many heroes.
In general, Unity has become a complete disappointment and something tells me that it will only get worse from now on. It is an insanely pity that one of the oldest and coolest AAA series of games, like many others, also went downhill and began to turn into a bland, tasteless, devoid of character and soul conveyor. The conveyor belt, which is now managed by effective managers, accountants and radical propagandists of various minorities, and not by directors, producers, directors and talented game makers who are burning with their work - true artists and poets of their field.

    Requiescat In Pace, Assassins Creed.

The good news: Ubi actually listened to fans who wanted less hand-holding; more open ended assassinations. They even shelved the out of place if mechanically excellent sailing. Customization is also fantastic.

The Bad: The 3 main pillars of AC: Parkour, combat and stealth have always looked a LOT better than they actually played but in Unity this is taken to absurd levels.

Parkour in theory should allow the player more control with the added fast-descent, but a in practice only makes things more complicated compounded by the irregular Parisian architecture leading Arno jumping on things you don't want, refusing to climb or drop at all and getting stuck on objects constantly.

Stealth: I rejoiced when I saw we would finally have a crouch and cover system, believing they would simply rip the brilliant Watch Dogs version and use that. Actually, no. This has to be the most inconsistent, broken cover-system i've played since Mass Effect 1. Want to quickly get into cover? Well, my friend, press x to roll that dice,. because Arno may do as you ask.... or he may rather then going into the piece of cover you want go out of his way to slide into a doorway in full view of everyone. He may only go into cover if he's standing. Or crouching. Or he may automatically go from one of these stances to the other for no reason. He may go into cover nowhere near the corner, or more likely he will just refuse altogether. In classic AC fashion Ai, level design and guard placement and patrols are all over the place leading to the conclusion the devs have nary a clue of how to DO stealth. Combine this with the erratic, sticky Parkour and imprecise general movement and frustration exceeds blood-boiling levels,

Combat: Well it's harder - no REALLY this time. Unfortunately it's not for the right reasons. Sure they removed the press counter to literally set up a kill-streak to eviscerate every guard in the western hemisphere, and replaced it with a nice timed parry, and allowed guards to attack you together, but the delay in reponse to your commands means you will get killed through no fault of your own. And because the game automatically judges whether Arno is 'in' or 'out' of combat if you want to run good luck because you will have to fight the controls to force Arno out of the combat stance, which combined with the aforementioned delay means you will more often than not get impaled in the back by the time you get the game to respond to what you want. Batman Arkham this ain't.

Playing this game is one of the most heart-breaking and frustrating experiences I've had in gaming, because it's clear Ubisoft really listened to what people wanted and clearly tried to produce the ultimate AC - a game that SHOULD have been the pinnacle of the series. When things work the game feels beautiful. Unfortunately that is the problem. Things work about 20% of the time. For every time Arno balletically glides over a ledge and slides down a rooftop into cover, before seemlessly wrentching a guard round a corner to sever his carotid artery without alerting a soul to his presence there will be another 4 where he'll get stuck on the ledge, or jump off the rooftop, or refuse to go into cover and get seen. It seems a combination of lack of talent to implement consistant, responsive controls in favour of their beloved animations and the usual Ubisoft rush-to-shelves-for-holiday-season have given us a beautiful yet horribly, buggy, unoptomized, broken mess.

Sniper Elite 3 with supersampling? That runs a dream too.
The mess that was Watch_Dogs? Ultra Worse mod settings even still ran well.
AC: Black Flag? Rarely dips below 60fps.

Assassins Creed Unity? I get better framerate running Skyrim on my tablet. This is without a doubt the most poorly optimised game available on the PC, barely worthy of being labelled and Alpha considering the sheer fluctuation of frame rate this game provides me. I would be satisfied, if this game ran on ANY given graphics setting at as little as 30fps solid. But that is the worst thing. It does not.

The frame rate is not the main problem here. It's the stability. The frame rate fluctuates wildly even in the damned pause menu. In my personal experience, It would skip up and down at random between 40 and 60 constantly with stuttering. A few times a minute it will pop down to the low twenties at random.

If you know anything about how frames render, you will know that this scenario is significantly worse that just running it at 30fps constantly. That is not even an option for me.

This chaos was after altering settings to work as best as they possibly can. The fluctuation persisted in all available settings.

If you absolutely have to play it, then you will be spending a long time adjusting settings. My hint to you is to start with turning AA either off or to FXAA. These options are the best thing you can do for your experience.

I enjoyed the gameplay a lot, I really did, but there are too many things that are buzzkills for me. At the top of the list is the attempt to control too much. There is such a fierce grasp around this game I feel the developers let slip too many things through the cracks. The graphics are next gen for sure, the gameplay and story telling is not. On top of all of that is the bugs, which I wouldn't give a **** about if they actually wanted to improve the core of this game. I expected the flow between the parkour and combat to be much more fluid but it seems to be relatively the same with a few minor changes. When games start to bring these kind of emotions out of people you wonder why they backlash so hard at the developers.

This review is based almost entirely on gameplay, the actual launch with the bugs didn't irk me as much as some of the actual in-game features. Though that doesn't mean it's acceptable.

    MONEY STUFF

This is where we get to the money game, which they seem to have put an awful lot of time. There are several currencies:

Franks are used to buy consumables, outfits, weapons, and property.

AC points(whatever that symbol is) which is a "abstergo" increment of money used to upgrade weapons and buy colors for the outfits.

Hack points are the microtransaction increment. You can buy everything in the game with these points if you have the real life dolla bills to throw down. This is where I get a little irritated. What it feels like they're doing is slowing down progression in various ways.. getting to places feels slower (possibly because our character runs slower on a 1:1 ratio of paris? Idk), combat is slower. Leveling seems to take forever, which also means I don't get to use all of the abilities throughout the entirety of the story.

In combination with the Initiate program... which you have to sign up for.. to unlock certain items.. so that you can eventually buy them. There is also mobile apps i've yet to download that unlock other in game **** This also allows you to open up certain Red and Gold chests. So basically theres stuff in the game that you can do because you haven't downloaded all the crap yet on all your devices.

So what this feels like to me is a they've added a grind to the game so you either

*dump tons of time into if you want to complete everything, and buy everything.

*OR buy upwards of 100$ worth Hack points so can buy better equipment earlier, or buy boosts to level up or w/e.

*None of the characters are really that intriguing. They seems to be cookie cutter Templar vs Assassin attitude.

*The crowds themselves are quite massive but, but for the most part they stick to a particular spots. Theres obviously roaming people from street to street, but there doesn't seem to a concious of the AI. Once again there are only so many models and some many outfits/colors. They don't react to you directly or your deeds you've accomplished. I kinda expected the city to be more "alive," at the time period it was a very turbulent and the city was of the edge. This is not the feeling the game gives off at all.

*The parkour is better than the last few installments and is probably the best part about the game as a whole. Trekking the city and just looking at every detail that goes into each inch of the world. Unfortunately the movement is plagued by many of the same issues such as, you're still frequently getting stopped in your tracks from either bad pathing, or odd obstacles. The downward parkour (new) is nice for sure but doesn't act how i expected either. Sometimes Arno jumps impossible heights without taking damage or suffers from the same issues as the upward parkour and goes a path you didn't wish him too. Some paths that seem like they should be, are not.

*The combat is much slower imo and rugged, it's fun but there isn't really anything revolutionary about it. In the beginning the enemies seem to be tougher but there are only a few enemy models so their patterns are easy to learn over time.

Combined, these letdowns result in unrealistic NPCs, sluggish combat and lacking immersion.

There is no fluidity in character movement, which is a significant letdown given that parkour is a major component in the Assassins Creed franchise. I found myself bashing into people instead of flowing through crowds, even at a walking pace.

This is a step backwards in the Assassins Creed franchise. Basic gameplay elements have suffered at the expense of grandeur and scope. This franchise has lost its soul at the expense of corporate profit. I hope the same doesn't happen to other Ubisoft franchises (especially Far Cry).

I really feel let down by this game - especially after enjoying AC3 and Black Flag so much. I feel ripped off. Ubisoft deserve all the bad publicity they get from this appalling game. I hope that a patch will come out soon that will fix all these problems, I really do. Because the truth is, no matter how much I hate how this game turned out, I'll continue playing it. Not only do I want to get my money's worth but the history and environment is good enough to endure all the crap. And for that I'll give it a score of 3 ;p

Thae bugs are: some NPC's are falling in to the ground when walkin in the street, and popping up again 10 sec. later, the game stutter alot and even with a framerate on 45 and G-sync its unplayable. i feels like AA is not working properly. The hair of NPS's are popping in to the air and the same for some of the NPC's cloth are jumping every second second. Ubisoft have 2 weeks to fix this game or i will demand my money back from the online shop. In oher words the game looks like it should be in an Alpha test state. And yes i have been a game tester in many betatest and some Alpha. BTW all driver is updated, even tried to reinstall the game. SHAME ON UBISOFT!! Although I, myself, haven't experienced as bad technical issues as other people, the game is still disgraceful in its current state; for a "finished" game to be released with these problems, while Ubisoft blames AMD for their own incompetencies, in 2014, Ubisoft Montreal really has brought shame to their names and to their products after this shocking display of lethargy and carelessness. Still, I can't say that the product was COMPLETELY awful. I am finding the story to be enjoyable and creative, while giving the characters personalities that I've fallen in love with; it's just a shame that they've decided to hide this positive aspect underneath all the garbage they've thrown on top of it. Second, I'm going to give scores here for all areas except story, since this is what I really want to talk about. Graphics are a nice upgrade, the gameplay is still managing to be genius and unbearably frustrating at the same time, But the meat of the review involves the story.

    Graphics: 7/10
    Gameplay: 8/10
    UI: 7/10

But here's where it gets dragged so far down.
The story is extremely vague to begin with. Already, from the very first moments, it feels like a cop-out idea for a story. As the opening unfolds, you are given a certain task. Great. Game's set up. So you continue on your way, trying to find the information in Arno's memories you are tasked with finding. But here's where things get disappointing.

Arno is a likable Assassin, but he is really written into a corner. His story is basically just Ezio's, and his motivations for being an Assassin are simply not just unrelatable, they're also boring and predictable. So while you're rummaging through his memories, you're having a very hard time connecting with him and agreeing with the things he says.
I held out hope near the end that the game would turn around, maybe offer some awesome present-day plot twist, but it was worse than I could have imagined. Not only did Arno's story end with nearly everything going wrong, but the information you were tasked with finding is apparently worthless once they find out what it is. Present day you (who you never see or hear, or even know in anyway whatsoever) is basically told, "You did a good job though, we'll call you if we need you to do something else."

To sum it up, Arno's story was pretty boring and it ended poorly. And to top it off, the present-day story line was next to nonexistent.

One other area of the game that really disappointed was the game world. Paris looked nice, and looked busy. That's about it. The French Revolution was not explained at all, there was no reasoning for how exactly the Templars and Assassins fit into it, and meeting famous figures (like Napoleon) feels very forced and unnecessary. The city had little life and soul.

Overall, it was a chore to play, and I am upset that the game turned out so poorly. The story issues were just a result of putting almost 0 effort into it, while the game world issues I mentioned could have been avoided by setting it in a different time period. Paris in any other time would have been a joy to explore, but the Revolution made everything feel dull and hostile, too much so for the City of Lights.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has good graphics and a large city area, but that's it. It is bugged, framerate issues, crashes often too. It has some fun missions, but not too much. It also manages to disrespect the history of the French Revolution in contrast to the fairness other historical events were treated in the Series. . Arno is the blandest character in the franchise, no interest, just cares about vengence and made to be too much of a do-gooder. The idea of a Templar-Assassin unity that was promised in the promotion get shelved since its entirely confined to a romance between Arno and Elise. With the exception of Bellec and the indecisiveness of the Assassin Council, the game is still Assassin Arno and Templar Elise versus even worse Templars, and there's no real attempt at unity. The entire French Revolution also gets shafted too for this love story. And they even do the love story poorly because Elise DIES and she's one of the few only intresting characters in the story!

Go play Assassin's Creed Rouge, Dishonored or Thief instead and spend your money elsewhere.

Ok but the character will decide to jump backward because why not? Not to mention that it's not even possible to predict where player can jump and where he can't, very useful feature when you want to run away and you stuck and got shot because you can't jump.
Another thing is that progress level demand playing side missions or playing main missions with lower level than recommended for the next mission. Do I should maybe buy some microt...
I'm so disappointed. I love story driven adventure games and it's another after Assassins Creed Odyssey that I decided to uninstall to not bother with such bad games (Odyssey for other reasons). It seems that AC series is not for me. I prefer games where I have full control over my character and progression level is done the right way based on my progress not on playing boring side missions or paying bribe to get boost it.

The new "free running system" is not helping anything. You will still rage and have the ENORMOUS frustration of not going where you want to; which will result in a lot of death in failed escape / runaways.

The gameplay itself have not changed at all since the first ACs (Plus it's missing the cool naval fights from the previous opus..).

Plenty of the main missions have not worked well for me; even some of the tutorials missions are off timing; resulting in many failures. (Most likely since Ubi are just copying their Gameplay and are not innovating anything with the series so only juniors work on this; resulting in bad gameplay / scripting / level design).

You will also find the obvious and oh plenty bugs and glitches (falling through the map, camera glitches, etc...). and the version is COMPLETELY BROKEN ON PC!!
I am having tremendous FPS problems whatever the settings I put with dual GTX 690 (or solo disabling SLI), i7-3930, 32gb DDR3...
And trust me; it is not an issue with drivers or whatever..

I absolutely loved the first 2 ACs; but trying my luck back: I can say this series is dead for me forever.
If you were on edge for this one: my two cents is dont buy it.

Theyve taken out the annoying follow him missions and replaced them with decent enough stealth missions. Theyve added upgrades for just about everything with xp and theyve changed the way you climb down buildings.

Apart from that, its still just assassin's creed. It can look good, but not as good as it should with its performance.

Even on low settings. Indeed, you have to play it on low settings unless you have a £2k+ rig, as I challenge anyone to cope with an hour or two of gaming with this title without wanting to punch a wall as your character jerks horrifically around the screen at 10fps at crucial moments.

Even when it DOES run somewhat smoothly (when I can get the abysmal UPlay to stop being its' usual terrible self of course), the pop ins are atrocious and the glitches... Oh dear Jebus the glitches... Words cannot describe what an unfinished mess this game is, but I'll try. I've fell through the floor twice, walked through walls repeatedly and at one point was stuck in midair. And all of this is before I mention the NPCs, which do incredibly random things - including an ice skating moonwalk in a circle at one point.

Was this tested at all? How can a major studio release this? I mean, I can sort of understand an indie studio having to meet a deadline for monetary purposes, but Ubisoft? Seriously?

Let's just assume the game ran flawlessly for a moment and talk about the gameplay. Is it OK? Yes. It's the same as past AC titles, and for all the hate the series gets, that's not a bad thing as it does what it does fairly well. Is it great however? No. It's got to the Call of Duty series 'paint by numbers' stage where we are getting the same game, almost totally, year on year, with no improvements whatsoever.

So it brings us to my final point - why would you buy this game? It's a buggy mess, yet even if you could cope with that, it does absolutely nothing more than Black Flag, which also featured the stellar sea-based content. So if you were coming new to the franchise, you'd objectively have to buy Black Flag. If you were an old hand and wanted another AC fix, you'd objectively either replay or buy the cheaper Black Flag. There is no rational reason to buy this title. It is, in effect, completely and utterly pointless.

Avoid. Seriously, avoid. Don't do it. Don't support this yearly iteration franchise nonsense. Don't give them tacit approval to keep doing it. Please, avoid buying this title.

Afterwards, I find Arno climbing an invisible wall with no way to get down except exiting the game. Because most of the sessions aren't very fun, I usually don't restart the game.

The layout of the map and the large number of civilians makes running around on rooftops faster than street travel again for the first time in years. Unfortunately, Ubi changed the free-running system to now require pressing an extra button for up or down. The system isn't tuned well, and while the system does allow a person to run around a corner or around an obstacle without inadvertently climbing, it is still a major step back in terms of fluidity of control.

Combat is awful - where in previous games a player could cut down a crowd like Chow Yun Fat, Arno is not a very good fighter. The visual cues for parry timing have been tweaked, and they are not as effective - especially coupled with the slow-down that often occurs in very crowded areas while fighting. Further, there seems to be no way to prevent getting shot (the last several games had a human shield maneuver). Worst of all, 90% of the trademark assassin moves (air kills, stealth kills, etc) are unavailable until purchased with one of the FOUR in-game currencies. Combat has taken a HUGE step back in this iteration of the series.

In previous games, Ubi tried to train us to accept running around a map looting chests as a substitute for gameplay. In this game, Ubi moves to step two: exploiting the now-ingrained chest hunting by making chests that can variously only be opened in co-op, using the smart-phone app, or using real-money to buy points. The map is so filled with markers for collectable objects, which as far as I can tell offer no significant benefit upon being collected, that it makes navigation a little frustrating. And the map itself is soooo huge that missions often require running a tremendous distance between objectives, just like the old days. I would've preferred to have the map broken into separate pieces with many more fast-travel options.

A phenomenal storyline woudn't be enough to save this game, but it's irrelevant. Arno is an insipid character, like a shadow of Ezio, who as an orphan doesn't even have family members to use as a vehicle for driving the story. Overall, Unity is my least favorite Assassin's Creed game ever and probably the most disappointing AAA game I've ever played. Even AC: Liberation HD, the port from a mobile platform, exceeds this game in every measurable way short of outright visual fidelity. The only good thing I have to say about Unity at this point is that Ubi gave me a free copy of FC4 for being unlucky enough to buy Unity at full price.

They need to contemplate their business strategy, this release will hurt them. Even among the console gamers. With such a small install base for those, they need PC gamers to buy this title. This game is not going to do it in it's current functional form.

The only pros would be so far it seems to have a typical AC story so if you enjoy that, you will enjoy this story. Voice acting is great so far. That's as far as I can go for Pros as the game is not playable enough to find out more.

Black flag was the first one my gaming PC and I enjoyed that game, but not immensely as past titles in the franchise. However I do have to say that Unity is a huge let down for me and that really hurts being that I love this franchise too much. My rig is equipped with an i5 3570k and a 770 and runs the game comfortably on high settings minus the occasional frame dip tantrums. I feel like ubisofts minimum and required specifications were unfair. Even though I think you feel more like an assassin than in previous titles being that they added sneaking/crouching and taking on two or more enemies at once is a handful. There is also immense customization options for Arno's outfit and gear which I like. Free running feels like jogging it's slow and sometimes feels unresponsive, it's just not fluid as it has been in the previous titles and compared to black flag the controls/keys feel more awkward than that of its predecessor. You'd be better off hooking up an Xbox controller to play this game on your PC. Also I may add that t co-op is terrible, I don't think any assassin's creed titles need multiplayer. In my opinion although they added neat little features like the sneaking ability and customization that should have been incorporated in previous titles, I have to say Ubisoft took a major step backwards with this iteration and the franchise which will ultimately affect my decision about buying another AC title in the future. If you were expecting something different out Unity compared to past titles, don't. Ultimately it feels more like a copy and paste trying to compete with CoD in a pissing match and CoD's bad luck is starting to rub off onto a once great franchise. The only thing different in Unity is the character you play as (Arno) and the setting (Paris 1789 French Revolution) the player is put in. Regardless of everything, I think the specifications ubisoft posted were the ultimate turn off for me. The specifications are overrated and outright irrational. Either some dense person posted the specifications on the ubiblog or they didn't take the time to optimize the title. In conclusion, I am beginning to think the franchise has lost its 'mojo'. Ubisoft needs to take a break from the franchise or step up their game in the next itteration (no pun intended). Hopefully Ubisoft can redeem themselves with the next Assassin's Creed title. Expand

This game deserves some justice for it's beautifully designed world and intriguing story. Unfortunately; regardless on how well your gaming rig is, this game will lag. This game will lag as if you're running it on a potato. Even after over-clocking my PC, which has an AMD 7800's Series graphics card, I need to play at low; even though the suggested level is high when auto-detected. After overlooking the fact that I needed to play the game on with a low graphics quality and with terrible FPS on top of that, I got through the introduction and swiftly learnt that this was a cash grab. Ubisoft put the game out to cash in quickly and intends to patch the bugs and optimization issues. This game looks miserable when considering the UI, and basic interface. Black Flag, it's predecessor is a much better game.

This game in conclusion is not optimized; "24 Fps on medium settings with a GTX 770 and an I7 3770k?" and is definitely not worth the buy. Wait at-least six months before even considering purchasing it. I'd pay 20$ for this game at most.

Dear Ubisoft, cant you see that the Anvilnext engine is a crap since AC3? Drop that thing and make a new one, or just go back to the AC2 engine.I will survive if a new AC wont coming next year because of that.

    Pros:
    - Great Graphics and acting
    - That shoehorned and useless competitive multiplayer mode was eliminated

    Cons:
    - Horrible optimization, full of bugs and glitches. By far Ubisoft's worst port after Splinter Cell Double Agent
    - The Animus's story is boring, rushed, clichéd and uninteresting. The modern is almost non-existant with a really insulting ending
    - Co-op was an interesting idea, but it was poorly developed
    - Uninteresting and boring side quests
    - Gameplay, despite some minor tweaks, is still the same from 2007
    - Fighting still looks like a bad turn-based ps1-era jrpg
    - Stealth and AI are and absolute joke
    - Full of Microtransactions

If Assassin's Creed 3 was the jumping-the-shark moment for the franchise, Assassin's Creed Unity is what killed it for good. What happens next, I don't care about it anymore. I'm done.

Soldiers are horrendously placed over the map, it feels like the person who made the map didn't even try to play a round of Unity. Sword fights are extremely tiring so obviously players prefer the stealth approach, which is also broken as enemies can easy detect movements from kilometers away.

The story is pretty much bellow average and that epic trailer is just about the co-op missions which "shockingly" is unavailable due to connection errors.

However, this is a shallow surface detail, and it starts to become apparent that the development team spent more time on visual upgrades and pseudocurrency integration than into actually developing a game that is fun and more importantly compelling to play. As Arno, the bilingual Frenchman with a distinct English accent, you will explore Paris for the usual trudging collectibles, hidden secrets and quests that accompany any Assassin's Creed game. There is a lot of content here. Well, you might say something different if you reclassify what content is, and perhaps make the term adhere to a more strict definition, as collecting the chests which require you to use the companion app to unlock them feels both dully reused and insultingly re-conceptualized, seems more as though the mandate of the team was "filler, filler and more filler" to split the main Assassination missions apart.

This trend of Ubisoft games is starting to feel more and more tired and uninspired the more games that it is present in. The player is let loose in an open environment with a multitude of optional objectives spread out across the game world, which if it takes your fancy, you can indulge in at any point for however long you want. It is possible to complete the majority of all of these side activities within the first couple of hours of the game, barring the restrictions of story unlocked areas and equipment required to complete them.

Whilst they are "optional" "side" activities, this method of injecting content has made up the bulk of most of the Assassin's Creed series, and now it has made it's way into Ubisoft's other IPs, with reimagining of the Far Cry series and Watch Dogs, all featuring the same system of climb/hack/climb&hack some kind of elevated structure which then in turn unlocks the area and reveals all the optional objectives and collectibles that were hidden.

Obviously the formula is popular, as so far all the series that utilise this method have been all been a success in their own right, and even when other companies take the concept and use it in their own games it appears to be a factor for success, as shown with Monolith's Shadow of Mordor, which used the same tower revealing mechanic, and even had an eerily similar jump-off-the-tall-thing animation as Assassin's Creed patented Eagle Whistle Haybale Frontflip Dive.

When it comes down to it, the gameplay of the game is nothing new. The combat system is practically identical, one of the very few differences being the way that enemies health is shown, which was absent in the previous to AC games but still their for the majority of Assassin's Creed titles.

The animations of the game, when they aren't bugging out horrifically, should be praised however, for some really fantastic mocap work that does genuinely convey a sense of realism (if you can suspend the disbelief of a man doing piroutess along the front of a church and frequently breaking the laws of physics) in the sticky-handed protagonists movements, and those of NPC's.

I didn't get to play Co-op, so I won't mention it, but it wasn't really something that interested me to begin with.

Finally, the micro-transactions are pointless, and the introduction of "Creed Points" is as hilarious as it is sad.

If you're looking for an interesting and exciting experience this isn't it, and the amount of performance issues makes it impossible to recommend.

Story: Well i not gonna spell any spoiler, this will be short this is a soap opera nothing more but truly! this is not an assassins creed game! only the name is ac nothing else! Arno is a BAD copy of ezio. The first 20 minute of gameplay as a templar (tragedy of jacques de molay) is better than the whole ac unity game was! finally i SAW a real TEMPLAR guys! finally after AC1! even the musics was better for this short gameplay and it was very cinematic and intense.

Music/Sound: sound effect is really awesome but still not mach with ac1 lifelike background sounds, same goes for the music wich is unity have a terrible musics, boring, flat unlike ac1/ac2/ac brotherhood they have genius musics.

i still think the best ac games was AC1,AC2,AC3,AC brotherhood after that the whole asassins creed franchise goes downhill.
The only positive was the game ending that was pretty good its looks like not a fairy tale game.

So apparently the silent sniper rifle with the ability to shoot through walls was invented during the French Revolution. At least that is what I would think with how many times the snipers have silently killed me without even letting me know I was spotted or was in combat. Oh and why not for good measure have random time freezes.

At least I didn't experience the horrible frame rates everyone else complains about, but the game is still incredibly buggy, the combat and platforming are enraging and the storyline is dull. This competes with 3 as the worst game of the series.

Oh it would be so nice if Ubisoft had not moved this pile of crap of software to a few months.
Technically, it is only in the beta phase and is full of artifacts and programming errors. On the Internet, it is mocked and images say more as words already everywhere;-).

Newfound openness of Assassin’s Creed demonstrates just how inadequate its AI really is for a stealth game: pampered nobility usually simply ignores a bloodied body on the dance floor, and guards don’t care much either. At least they’ve learned how to fight: unless you “cheat” with smoke bombs, it’s highly unlikely you’ll survive a melee against a group. [Jan 2015, p.62]

As I write this, Assassin’s Creed: Unity is a bugfest, but technical problems, however annoying, can and probably will be fixed. It is not cracks in textures that it is the most worrying thing about Unity, but the cracks in game design and writing.
