Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure follows the story of Jemma, a small-town misfit on a journey of self-discovery. Venturing out beyond her stiflingly cozy confines, she finds an inspiring world - but also one ruled by fear, and a strange, immovable 'static' force.

Can she disrupt a culture of stagnation, and find a place to fit into it?

Gameplay takes place on a unique, interconnected 'grid' that spans the entire world, snappily uniting movement, exploration, and combat. Anything on the same row or column as Jemma moves when she moves, and can 'loop' around the edge of the grid - creating both a playful sense of chaos, and a regular stream of small, thoughtful puzzles that twist and play with the central mechanic.

Arranger's cheeriness and playfulness thus works its way into every facet of its design, from the craft of its puzzles to the personality of its world and its inclusive embrace. This year has already supplied a pair of best-in-class puzzle games in the shape of Animal Well and Lorelei And The Laser Eyes; now they need to shift over and make room for one more. Compact and playful and ingenious in the lightest, and least overbearing of ways, Arranger is just lovely.

Fresh and fun, minimalist to the point, Arranger is a perfect summer work for portability. Fast-paced but hardly frustrating, Arranger's puzzles combined with a very dry narrative make for a refreshing indie experience that entertains, even if it only lasts a handful of hours.

Arranger is a cute game that will welcome both puzzle veterans as well as those who never tried the genre. The unique premise and the creativity to apply it in different ways throughout its stages is great and feels really satisfying.

For me, I wish the game had a bit more bite to it. The optional content was more my speed in terms of puzzle solving and felt satisfying to crack. Most of the game felt a touch on the easy side, and while easy isn’t the same as bad, I was left wanting. That said, Arranger’s story, chill atmosphere, and unique art style make it an adventure worth trekking.

There are good ideas, and occasionally very good execution, but on the whole none of it feels like it ever clicks into a coherent, must-play whole.
