First of all I have to say that I didn't buy the game. I've only played the 10-hour trial on EA Access.

I have a longe history with Bioware, they are probably my favorite video-game company of all time. Baldurs Gate marked my early teen years an helped me learn english, MDK 2 was one of my favorite Dreamcast games, I LOVE Kotor and Mass Effect is my favorite trilogy all times (and I am talking about trilogies in general, including games, films and books). I even loved them when everyone hated, I don't think the Mass Effect 3 ending was bad and despite of all its problems I think Andromeda is a good game.

But let's talk about Anthem...well this game is UNACCEPTABLE and the worst mark in Bioware history. I don't even know where to start, the load times are disgraceful (I expect a lot of memes about it), the story is not even close to what we've seen in the past from Bioware, the gameplay is boring, broken and repetitive. This game SUCKS! This will obviosuly be a big commercial failure, I just hope it will not be the end of Bioware, I hope they will learn from it and maybe some day we will see Bioware making great games like ME and KOTOR again.

Let's sum up all the BS Bioware/EA spewed regarding the game, and the concerns bioware fans had, about this "Multiplayer-Live-Service-Game-With-Story-Focus-That-Nobody-Have-Done-Before" crap. By know, everybody knows that these statements were BS, just as all people that had a brain, or any knowledge about game design have been saying since this project was announced.Let's sum up all the BS Bioware/EA spewed regarding the game, and the concerns bioware fans had, about this "Multiplayer-Live-Service-Game-With-Story-Focus-That-Nobody-Have-Done-Before" crap. By know, everybody knows that these statements were BS, just as all people that had a brain, or any knowledge about game design have been saying since this project was announced.

"...Microtransactions will not affect gameplay..." - In a looter shooter game, where the (supposed) goal of the game is to find cool looking LOOT, how is cosmetic microtransactions different than paying for power in a competitive game? IT'S THE SAME THING. You are affecting the enjoyment of the game (not just because of the game design, which in these situations is made purposefully grindy), but the "pride and accomplishment" you get from EARNING things from FAIR gameplay. There is NO FAIR gameplay with games like Anthem. The game is DESIGNED to push you to spending money, on the very things you are playing the game for (in this case - looks). Aren't they clever, tricking players with semantics?

I'm not gonna even bother with the "story/narrative" because: NEWS FLASH! NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE STORY IN A MULTIPLAYER GAME, especially when you are playing with other people. Such formula will NEVER work. It has been proven time and time again. Even if the game had the most amazing story/narrative/quests/characters (and with anthem, it's the complete opposite), it would still NOT change that fact.

And guess what? They knew this, and they didn't even try. The "narrative", the characters, the "story", THEY ARE THE WORSE THEY HAVE EVER BEEN. In fact, these are below even other boringly average games, like the Division. And that coming form a studio that was KNOWN for these things, IT'S F*CKING EMBARRASING! IT's SAD!

That's right. The main point BIOEA was selling this game to their fans (those that liked story-driven Bioware RPGs), WAS A LIE. It was a lie from the very beginning. And they KNEW it. WE KNEW IT. But they went with it anyway, and were pushing it to the very last moment.
    - - -

let's pull some quotes (from IGN's "Anthem: Full BioWare Interview on Gameplay Features - E3 2018" video):

"Mark Darrah: So, a great story about Bioware is about characters that you can have a connection with, uhm, choices you get to make, and feeling like the story is about you. ... "Our World, My story.""

Well, that's BS. Anthem falls flat on it's face in that regard. Just as expected.

    - - -

"Mark Darrah: What is unique about anthem, is that it's a living shared world, where you experience the Story of your actions."

Again, complete BS statement, and a lie. A lie, softly directed at bioware fans.

    - - -

"Casey Hudson: So what we try to do, is we think about the new experiences that we are trying to unlock for players, so what is the fantasy fulfillment, what are the new things that you actually get to go and do, THAT ARE DIFFERENT FROM WHAT YOU'VE PLAYED BEFORE."

Again - another lie. No matter if he meant "different from what you've played before" in terms of comparing to other games, or Anthem and it's "mission/quest design". BOTH OF THESE THINGS ARE INCORRECT when it comes to Anthem.

No point in getting into more detail here. You can watch Skillup's reviews on anthem, and see if these BOLD statements from Mark Darrah and Casey Hudson are true. [Hint - THEY ARE NOT!]

    - - -
And isn't it cute, how there are rumors/whispers floating about how Bioware's future is is tightly dependent on Anthem's failure/success? What is this? some sort of driving people towards "sympathy purchases"?

You know what, Bioware? IF YOU STILL MADE THE GAMES WE WANTED/EXPECTED from you, we would've cared about your "future". But with generic crap like Anthem, which is obvious change of focus for the studio, and being EXACTLY what we though it's going to be (money-making online crap, that's not even as good as other FREE games like it), the most proper response at this point would be: F*CK YOU!

And f*ck all of the EA influencers, which main task was to "convince" people (the fanbase) that like Bioware's story driven action RPGs, that they should "give Anthem a chance", or even bully them to LIKEing it, just to keep BW's ass from EA's chopping block, DESPITE IT BEING A GAME THEY KNOW THE FANBASE WOULDN'T LIKE, OR CARE ABOUT (live service, multiplayer looter shooter with MT cr*p). Same thing as failout 76.

No lessons were learned, from all of the failures of other companies, that tried the "try something new", which is nothing more than "- We wanna capitalize on the current money makers, f*ck our customer base, we will strong-arm them into liking our new direction". Which is what EA's motto is, and it's exactly what Anthem is. Uninspired, boring, repetitive, appealing to NOBODY, cookie-cutter live-service EA crap, marketed with lies and false promises.

Also, Mass Effect "Died" For THIS!???

F*ck this game. The score given is a STATEMENT.

This game is a complete mess. Controls are weird, there are random bugs that crash the whole game. The weapons miss even at point blank...
Then, if you ever manage to make it work, you get to see how much of a mobile game this is.
Paid progression, click x times on something to make another thing... It is downright boring.
The worst AAA game in a long time.

I wish I had something different to say than all the other negative reviews but by now if you have read a few you more or less know the problems (no point in repeating it). The pathetic defense of "the game will be good one day" just doesn't cut it for me. Far too many good games out there to be bothered waiting for them to one day *maybe* fix the problems.

The hub is empty, the characters are poorly done, the multiplayer aspects do not work because quests are not shared. It feels as though they tried to make Diablo and slap Warframe on top of it. I gave Bioware grace after Inquisition, because it was a poorly done open-world RPG, and I gave the same quarter after Andromeda, but this game has been in development for seven years. Seven years. At the cost of the developers who probably worked very hard on this. Seven years, for a loading simulator. Hudson lied and needs to step down. Expand

Very bland, very repetitive game. Too generic for my taste. With the lack of content it certainly is not worth anyone's 60$. Do not buy!
So this is where Bioware is today? From Baldur's Gate 1, MDK2, Baldur's Gate II, Neverwinter Nights, Kotor, Jade Empire, Mass Effect to this.
Dragon Age Origins was the last game the real Bioware ever made. RIP!

I suggest Jade Empire or Baldur's Gate.

Anthem is the latest new looter shooter IP, but incredibly fails to learn any lessons that have been learned from Destiny and The Division. Anthem has an average story that lasts around 15 hours - which is disappointing coming from Bioware - and a severe lack of unique, or even interesting end game content.

If they'd relabel Anthem to "Loading Screen Simulator" it would win the "GotY" award.

Online, Multiplayer, Co-Op are all fundamental facets to this game that are completely impaired by the game itself.

Online = frequent disconnects resulting in loading screens, lost experience, lost loot and forcing a repeat of the mission you were on.

Multiplayer = the only time you are actually spending time with others is on missions or in the launch bay (serves no purpose, identical options as Fort Tarsis). While on missions, there is ZERO way to communicate with other players aside from using VOIP that hardly ever seems to work, that permits others to opt out of and have no idea of that. There is no pinging for data sharing between players, there is no marking targets, there is no chat... there is nothing to support multiplayer within the game that works consistently.

Co-Op = There is no way to from a group and coordinate anything prior to a mission within the structure of the game. If you rely on the game to match make you, then you end up with random teammates that could all be in the same Javelin as you, unable to initiate combos and they may not even have skills equipped that allow for combos in the first place. Which leads us right back to the start... why is there Co-Op is the foundation of its effectiveness is totally random and luck based on some unknown matchmaking system.

I could go on, but I feel my point was made. Anthem is a pointless game that has no place in your library. There are games out there that deliver on what Anthem was attempting to bring to the table, but those games don't suck, unlike Anthem... it sucks. This is a prime example of EA pushing a developer into an arena they do not belong. DICE or RESPAWN should have made Anthem, Bioware should have been working on a new Star Wars, Mass Effect or Dragon Age game. This crap is why people don't go looking for a Ford Motor Company Washing Machine when theirs breaks down, they go buy a Whirlpool.

This is what happens when you make a game for your shareholders, rather than gamers. The quality and care is nonexistant in this title. We got some hints that Bioware was going downhill after the disaster known as Mass Effect: Andromeda. This game solidifies that. Mark my words: their next game will be trash too: their next Dragon Age game.

It's obvious that Anthem didn't have enough development time, but had some great potential. It's a real shame, that everything turned out this way. Even now, the game can bring out positive emotions. Hasty climbers have sudden falls. No matter how ironic this proverb may seem, it's incredibly relevant for Anthem.
