If you play this game for the first 4 or 5 hours then you might easily be mistaken into being impressed. Visually there is much that is quite stunning, at least superficially, but beyond the smoke and mirrors what finally unveils itself to the player is a shallow, vapid and extraordinarily tedious experience. Customization is weak and limited, weapons are generic and gunplay is functional at best and lacks the power-fantasy feeling that other looter games provide. Then there are the loading screens, bad UI with menus and menus and loading between even basic features as swapping equipment. The central hub is lifeless and tedious to navigate and not a patch on what was shown in earlier gameplay footage and has been severely downgraded.

Missions are generic and have little variance. The story is, quite frankly, laughable and despite what Casey Hudson said about players able to make choices in the game none of them matter. All dialogue options are bland and have zero consequence on the outcome. The loot is actually terrible and does not create any sense of excitement or generate any enthusiasm to continue the pursuit of new gear in the way that looter-shooters must achieve. After 70 hours or so you may easily find that you do NOT even have enough credits or pieces to craft a single masterwork and the desire to continue pounding away on the extremely limited endgame content dissipates as a result.

The game is not finished. There can be no argument otherwise and the fact of the matter is that this has become a practice from publishers that simply cannot be allowed to continue. Releasing bare bones shells of games with a 'roadmap' and a promise to fix it eventually is simply unacceptable. Let us not forget that you are paying FULL price for almost nothing at all...it is not as though they release a quarter of a game and ask you for a quarter of the money. Currently the game deserves no more than a 3/10. It is functional for the most part and parts of it do look very nice but there's nothing there to keep you interested and even if content is added at a later date this game will struggle to recover from it's empty, soulless start.

Yet another unfinished game I'm expected to pay up-front for. Stop telling me everything will be fixed later! I bought this game today, not in 6 months or however long it'll take to "fix" it. Maybe if Bioware stopped shipping incomplete trash to beat some arbitrary publisher deadline, their reputation wouldn't be in the toilet.

Rated this a 3 because it looks nice. That's it. Game play consists of tired and terrible "hold this point against enemy waves!" or "bring x number of shiny things to this shiny thing!" missions over and over. Guns are all generic sounding and feeling, abilities are just there to spam out with little thought to how to effectively set up combos. Would have been nice to see some clear guidance on how the combo system is supposed to work.

The Bioware storytelling is a mere shadow of old, with lore and exposition shoehorned into the awful (slow!)walking-simulator that is the games main "hub", Ft. Tarsis. Boring characters, boring exposition, inconsequential choices in dialogue trees. But at least the game looks nice, and flying is fun, whee!

Oh, and you better believe the microtransactions are fully fleshed out, get those coins so you can upgrade your suit's appearance! It's truly like they needed a "game" to build around their money-grubbing appearance engine. 8 bucks for a javelin skin? Nope, nope, nope.

Terrible, terrible game, not good for Bioware, not even good as an indie game.

The first part of the review is a Post-release impression. For a more recent (and truthfully honest) opinion, there's an UPDATE tab at the end.

Anthem is a frustrating experience. Because it does a lot of things wrong (basic features included), but what it does right it does so magnificently. Personally, it is undoubtedly the most fun I've had on a video-game in a very long time. But

Anthem is a frustrating experience. Because it does a lot of things wrong (basic features included), but what it does right it does so magnificently.

Personally, it is undoubtedly the most fun I've had on a video-game in a very long time. But unfortunately, giving my opinion here on whether to BUY this game or not requires a certain degree of objectivity.

BioWare, I say this as a long time fan of yours: please get your **** together. You can't expect the same treatment if your game releases in the same state half-a-decade-old games released in. You are the last to enter the market, you are supposed to be the best. And you are not.

At least not right now. Anyway.

    Pros:

    - The game is stunningly beautiful and runs (almost) smoothly. A few bugs here and there, but most were corrected by the Day 1 patch. The world looks good, the characters look good (I'm particularly fond of my Shelancer), the Javelins look awesome, be it their metallic textures or the more refined meshes. Good stuff.
    - That Gameplay. Capital G because that's how it freaking had to be done. I can't emphasise enough how much they nailed this aspect. Flying, shooting, making stuff blow up feels satisfying, and each Javelin feels unique and rewarding. You guys can be proud of this.
-Actual customization. My Javelin is unique. I know that because no sane person would associate the colors I chose. But thanks to that, I'm 100% sure it's unique. Happy to have the opportunity.
-The music. Listen to "Valor". Thank me later.

    Cons:

-The story. This is a BioWare game, and I can very clearly state that it has a story equivalent to any standard 2010s FPS. See the average summer action blockbuster? Add in one or two potentially interesting characters, and you have Anthem's campaign. Choices ? What ?Where ? Everybody's going to experience the same thing. Not bad per se, but easily the least convincing story told by the master storytellers.
-Content. Three dungeons and the same three repeatable contracts at Lvl 30. Yeah, not a lot.
-Some strange choices. No stat page ? In a stat based game? Also, why doesn't the suiting cinematic happen during loading screens ? A lot of the decisions they made are this confusing.
-Loot RNG and drop rates. So umm, either remove the random aspect of those inscriptions (which can give you a 0% bonus on a Masterwork or Legendary item at the moment) or let us have a lot of them so that we have more chance to draw something usable. Investing time isn't rewarding when all the loot you get is worse than what you already have in the endgame.

Anthem isn't a bad game. It certainly isn't as bad as Fallout 76 like the congregated score suggests. It has its (incredibly exhilirating) moments. I spent 35 hours on it since its official launch, and I think that's enough of a return of investment, espcially knowing that I will still play it for a long time. But it feels like it needed a little while longer in the oven. It looks like the devs care about this game though, which is very encouraging. That is why I believe I'll wait for the next updates and come back in a few months to update this review.

However, and more importantly, I'll borrow a sentence from my ME Andromeda review that heavily saddens me: this just isn't what we've come to expect from a BioWare game.

UPDATE: Okay, this is now ridiculous. I take it down a few notches because BioWare is seemingly incapable of taking responsibility for its f-ups. That Roadmap ? Not respected. Communication? Absent. Content? What a joke.

Updates breaking the game even more than it was before ? How did you manage that?

You had the foundations to build a decent game from where you stood, but I'm sorry, this is a failure. One of the biggest I've ever had the misfortune to witness. And it's BioWare. Sigh.

Scrap everything. Change how you work, your view of videogames and your methods.

Never thought I'd say this, but let Dragon Age 4 at least go up to Mass Effect Andromeda's quality if you really can't do better. Let this thing rot and let's never talk about it. Ever. Again.

Javelin customization is also fairly deep, allowing you to also edit finer details such as finishes and fabrics. Gameplay can be fun at first, and each Javelin has enough variety to offer something different. Unfortunately praise ends there, everything else is incredibly underwhelming.

I complemented the environments, but we NEVER do anything interesting in them. You find a horde of enemies, clear them out, and move onto the next point. Enemies are also scattered without any thought, wasting the opportunity to take advantage of the space they're in. It's a real shame because instead of interacting with something the artists obviously spent so much time on, you just fly by and ignore it most of the time.

Now gameplay isn't that bad, though some Javelin's are obviously better than others. Storm seems to be the most popular one I've seen, and I'm guilty myself of being on that bandwagon. Blowing stuff up is really satisfying, until you realize 10+ hours in this is all you do. The whole experience is just a massive grind, and the atrocious loading times don't help. Even at higher difficulties, they don't offer much to spice up gameplay.

People are clinging onto the story as a positive element, seriously? Even next to the likes of Destiny ONE, it's the most generic and uninspired plot I've seen in awhile. It's very difficult to care about the world or characters which inhabit it, everything is just so... soulless. That's one of Anthem's biggest problems, it has no identity of its own. It's just another big budget game which will most likely be forgotten 10 years from now.

As for those repeating, "This is day 1, it's still early they'll fix it later!" remember Mass Effect: Andromeda? They did one patch, and abandoned the product because everyone saw it as a joke. It should be common knowledge by now that a strong launch is EVERYTHING, and right now the product we got doesn't even feel like a complete game.

Anthem looked very promising before its release, something that most games share with each other when a big publisher is in charge of the marketing. However, the mostly transparent and very down-to-the-community approach that the devs took by being very active on twitter, reddit and on their livestreams build up at least hope, that Bioware would've found back to their former glory.

And at its core, Anthem is a really strong game. The gunplay is solid, the different Javelins with their unique abilities have a good flow to them (despite some balancing issues) and the flying is not just a gimmick but something to factor in on every encounter. When there is one thing, where the game lives up to its expectations, it is the javelin design and the combat system surrounding it.

However, the good core of the combat is overshadowed by technical issues and a repetitive gameplay that rarely motivates you to spend time in the 'so called' endgame.

    Technical Issues / Performance:
First up: If you don't own an SSD, don't play Anthem. The game has loading screens for everything, including the Forge (which is there you change your items/javelin build) and it will take between 40-90 seconds (depending on the activity) to leave the loading screen. Sometimes, you even get a loading screen on top of a loading screen because the rest of your team already headed forward and the game forcibly pulls you to the rest of your team, which results in another loading screen.

There is a a sheer abundance of glitches and bugs that accompany the performance of the game which makes playing Anthem an ongoing gamble if you can actually play a mission or stronghold at all or if you have to reload everything, sometimes multiple times. It is fair to say that the state in which Anthem launched, is a complete embarrasment to their QA team or whoever is responsible for that mess that is in a worse technical state than the demo.

    Gameplay:
The gameplay of Anthem knows only three specific types of game encounters:
    > Point Defense
    > Fetch numbers of item A and bring it to ooint B
    > Kill stuff until your mission updates

Those three pillars of mission design repeat themselves over and over, even within the storyline, where Bioware could have gone nuts with all the cool stuff their storyline had to offer, if it had been properly executed. The game doesn't try to hide the three game mechanics from you and it doesn't try to mask it. Instead you kill the same 2-3 types of enemies of enemies over and over again, fetch the same items (not even those change, there are like 2-3 presets for them as well) until you get one unique bossfight at the end of the storyline and thats literally it.

The strongholds, which are supposed to be the endgame activity, have, despite a plethora of technical issues (which caused Bioware to deactivate quickplay for them temporarily) a good design despite the third one, which is just the last story mission tagged as a Stronghold.

    Storyline:
Bioware is known for their good and deep story in their games and in some interviews, they also acknowledged, that story would be a centerpiece of Anthem as well. However, the story itself was bland and uninspired and felt much more like an introduction to something bigger that we have yet to see. Sometimes there are bits where your character interacts with his dialogue partner, mostly during lenghty dialogue cutscenes and in those moments, you can really see that Bioware still got what it takes to tell a good story. Those cutscenes really sucked me in but where far too rare in order to make the otherwise bland story special.

The world of Anthem is so rich with interesting characters and unique features, however compared to their previous games, Anthem fails to tell an interesting storyline. In fact, the main campaign isn't even in line with their leveling curve and I finished the main storyline at around level 19 of 30 and had to grind 11 levels in strongholds, missions and contracts until I was able to experience the endgame.

    Endgame:
Anthems endgame is currently pretty much non-existent. If you had to call some part of the game "endgame", it would be unlocking the Grandmaster difficulties and playing the same three strongholds over and over in order to achieve legendary and masterwork items. And in fact, I think that would keep people at least entertained until their content patch in march hits. The numerous technical issues and horrendous loading times however, do a perfect job of blocking you from enjoying that form of content.

    Verdict:
Anthem has a strong base, but lacks in nearly every part despite its core gameplay, which is at least solid. You will only enjoy this game, if you somehow don't experience all the technical issues others are experiencing and if you fall in love with the gameworld. In any other case, I'd advise skipping this title. I think myself lucky that I only paid 15 Euros for EA premier access for this game.

Good core gameplay -- most abilities feel good, combos are satisfying, flying is fun. However: Gameplay hub is terrible to navigate. Gunplay feels bland. Extremely repetitive mission design. Very little gameplay objective and enemy variety. Very little weapon and gear variety. Little meaningful character progression. Gear is badly balanced and often bugged. Almost no suit customization outside of the dye system.

Soundtrack is great, world is interesting. However: Story is beyond generic, the villain gets three minutes of screentime and does generic bad guy things. Barely any interesting characters. Dialogue is a slog, often feels unnatural and over-acted. Dialogue choices are meaningless.

I can't think of much good to say. Besides visuals and flying, it really does not excel at anything, I feel. On the other side, the list of issues is long. It feels unfinished and heartless. At the time, I have no interesting in playing any further than halfway through the story -- at this point I've long seen all the enemies, all the gameplay objectives, used all weapons and gear and seen the entire map. Everything beyond that is pure repetition and chasing higher numbers. Which, ironically, you can't effectively play around, since there is no stats page.

    Disappointing.

The game has about 3 enemy types. Ground creatures that run at you, aerial creatures/ranged creatures just static attack you and finally the humanoids who all look identical, and act awfully.

I gave this game a fair go, I thought, it can't be as bad as everyone makes it out to be, it is. Wait for a sale, Wait for a year's worth of content to be released.

I have a great PC and I crashed 4 times in about 3 hours, having to repeat the same boring intro content. So bad, What a waste of potential and talented developers who are just getting steamrolled by the money hungry higher-ups. I had to make a Metacritic account just so i could warn others.

If you always wanted to get a Mass Effect game, minus a good story, minus interesting characters, minus the feeling you're actually having any meaningful impact on the Universe, then Anthem is the game you're been waiting for. Plus staring at LOADING screens. ENJOY ...or pray somebody makes a decent Space Opera sometime again.

The most talked about issue is EA's games as a service model, which is a disgrace. The shady launch times do also not help when the game isn't even up to a standard other companies would consider releasing it at. This games as a service and lack of quality is linked and will be seen in the way that despite launching poorly, EA will draw you back to the game after you're done with it by advertising new content that should've been in the base game, which, is extremely short. In addition to the problems with the lack of content, much of it in the game is locked behind microtransactions.

Finally, as mentioned before, the quality in general is insufficient, which extends beyond the bugs. The areas in the game feel as if they were designed for more and long to have something more than a bulletsoaker or 2 for every 5 minutes youve flown around (alright the flying is pretty cool). In addition the team at Bioware clearly haven't put much effort into animation which can be seen in the way that the movements loop and often don't make a lot of sense (mostly talking about NPCs here).

In conclusion, Anthem is a great idea, but has been executed terribly.

So, many years of development are done, and Anthem is finally here. Was it worth the wait?....The short answer, NO!

Worse still, is that this is the game that killed the excellent Mass Effect series. For those that don't know, Mass Effect Andromeda, the fourth game in the series and first of it's own story arch, was bumped to Bioware's B team for development, so that their A team could focus on Anthem. This resulted in a lackluster ME Andromeda, that ultimately ended the ME universe before the story was even finished.
It really wasn't worth it. Essentially Bio/EA murdered one of their strongest properties, all so they could jump on the multiplayer bandwagon. They jumped, missed the step, clung to the side of that wagon for half a mile, before falling off and being mangled by the wheels!

Anthem is boring.....VERY boring. We the players were also lied to, or at least misled a lot during the pre-release sneak peak phase of development. I'm sure we all remember seeing one of the pre release videos, showing pilots chat as they mounted into their Javelin suits, before seamlessly jumping off a cliff edge and flying into battle. Later we see one player find a cool new mortar, which he immediately equips and uses to devastating effect. "woohoo" I thought. This game looks awesome! This is what Destiny should have been!

What we got....Loading screens......LOT'S of loading screens. Not only loading screens, but really LOOOOONG loading screens.

Fort Tarsis, contrary to the pre-release hype, is a very separate LITTLE world. Leaving it requires jarring loading screens that take forever. Really, Tarsis is just a glorified menu screen where you select missions which you then load into. A menu screen that requires lot's of very slow walking from A to B to access different menus. This really kills the sense of an open world that seemed promised in the earlier trailers. It's also very small and dull. Lacking in vibrant life and sound.

This brings me nicely to the open world itself (once you finally load into it) It is sadly, also fairly boring. It looks amazing to be fair to the art department. They did an amazing job, but it is limited and very "samey". Likewise it is underpopulated and the enemies feel very repetitive.

The gun-play and combat mechanics all feel quite nice, as does the movement, but ultimately it's nothing new or exciting. Sure flying around like Iron Man is great, but it doesn't make a game on it's own and the novelty wears off fast.
The weapon drops also are dull. Mostly you will find the same few guns with pointless stat variations, and contrary to the trailers, you cannot just equip something new you find. You must return to Fort Boring...sorry, Tarsis in order to find out what dropped and to make any inventory changes. Which of course means more immersion breaking LONG load times.

There are also bugs, lot's of bugs. From broken collision, to total CTD. It's all a bit of a mess. You'd expect this from a rushed title, but this game has been in development for a very long time. I could even forgive the bugs to some degree, if the game had a ton of content that took up all that development time, but it just doesn't. It all feels empty.
This leads me to believe that either the whole project was mismanaged and lazily crafted, or they stripped the base game to it's bare bones so they could sell us the actual content in DLC form later on.

Ultimately I kind of hate this game. Not only did it hammer the coffin lid down my favourite game franchise, but it's also just a bad, repetitive, grindy game.

I know that EA titles often get a bad rap, purely because people hate EA, but this really isn't the case here. I've not played many EA games or had any issues with their games that I have played. I just really genuinely dislike this game. It's the biggest gaming disappointment I've had in years. possibly ever.

I won't be following Anthem any further.

Edit. Sadly some members of the community don't seem to understand how reviews work, or are artificially inflating reviews.
Saying "this game isn't perfect" Then scoring it a perfect 10/10 doesn't make any sense. And saying things like "I personally think this game is only a 5 or 6, but others are mean, so I gave it 10" is just plain idiotic and you are admitting that you are falsifying a review!
You will also see people claiming that the game is getting bad press because people don't like EA. TRUST ME, it's because it is a very poor game. Don't be suckered in. If it weren't for idiots and fan boys, the score would be even lower.

EA's and Biowares Anthem are non of those. You could always discuss "fun" but the pillars of this game are visual effects, customization and monetization. Is it the new standard to launch broken unfinished games? Is it okay to false advertise and overhype shallow products like these?
I feel no passion, no creativity and no love for the gamer with this release.
It is a looter shooter with non interesting loot in a very forgettable planet with repetitive missions and activities, shooting different races that feel no different at all, with terrible AI controlled enemies that are bullet sponge type bosses. Anthem had 7 years of work and Bioware had the opportunity to look at games like borderlands, destiny, division, mass effect, etc to make this game better and at least working.
I think in the end it's a nice looking game where the focus is put exactly on that alone. A very poor product in technical and creative sense.

Quickplay simply doesn't work. Stronghold bosses don't reward very good loot, and so most players leave before the boss, meaning 95% of the time you que a stronghold you get dropped onto a boss and miss out on all the loot and the fun of doing the actual content. Loot drop rates are wildly affected by several mysterious factors such as group item level, %luck stat on gear, and whatever loot tables are active on the given day, and it changes every week seemingly for the worst. The developers are anything but transparent when it comes to how the games systems work and more than likely it's because the developers don't know how they work. When the game doesn't crash and you're actually able to play it, the combat is very fun! When loot doesn't drop that fun starts to wear thin. When loot does finally drop and it's completely useless garbage that fun turns to rage and disappointment. The severe lack of content, unpolished interface, and cookie-cutter story are not enough to carry this game. It's a fantastic tech demo, but it is truly a terrible game.

I want to give this a 4 but I feel that so many things in this game were poorly thought out that I can't go lighter on it simply because movement and combat is good if lacking complexity.

-1 for complete lack of endgame content and barebones character/armor customization at launch. I get most games at launch have very limited endgame content in the beginning but nothing this bad. Also there's an insane lack of skins for weapons and skins for a loot based game. There are more skins for Diablo white gear than all the skins in Anthem currently (Diablo comparison because Bioware preferred that comparison, but I expect this problem compared to other games as well).

-1 for story, story/quest implementation, limited npc/hubzone, menu functionality etc. Story is currently weak but not bad for generally play. I'm a lore guy and the lore doesn't engage me to the degree I would expect from a company who made it's name on amazing single player stories. Story/quest implementation is bad. The lack of a dialogue log of any kind makes the storyline progression so much worse than it has to be. It's a game designed for group play but you have to play single player in order to not miss dialogue and cutscenes because party members that move too quickly force you to skip dialogue that you can't replay (unless you luckily get it again in a quickplay but the same problem exists there). A log would at least help mitigate that but nope. Quests have only two main mechanics (kill, fetch) that gets old fast. Hub and npcs are not engaging enough to make me feel invested in the world. Helpful tooltips or character sheet with accurate stat explanations are nonexistent. It's very clunky to switch suits on the fly from the mission select screen; having to go into the forge each time is annoying.

The positives: the world looks beautiful if a bit empty and static compared to what was shown to us in trailers during development. Character facial animation is good. Voices are ok for some and cringy for others. Flying and combat feel good together. The foundations for a good game are there as movement and combat are important. The problem is that it's just those things and considering the difficulties of working with the Frostbite engine, who knows if and when the rest of the things the game lacks to make a good game will actually come out.

Matchmaking seems to pair you up with players when you would rather play alone and fails to find any players to help you when you would like some help from a squad. The difficulty varies from stupidly easy (in main quest missions) to stupidly hard (if you begin the wrong side mission) The worst part of this difficulty discrepancy is that the enemies you are facing all look alike. I didn't get any enjoyment out of finding new loot or defeating tough enemies. The whole experience was joyless. Expand

The fighting is fun, graphics is good, but all the rest is bad. Loot design is the worst I've ever seen, lack of content in loot, all the items in a category is the same, and you cant even look at the loot right away. Would not recommend this game.

The mission structure is unbearably repetitive and if you're lucky the mission will bug and you'll get to do it all over again. (Which has happened to me at least 6 times in my 24 hours playing it) The game will seem fun for the first couple of hours but trust me this a game that is NOT worth your time. And no i'm not going to be one of those people that say "well maybe it will be good when they patch it and update it" yeah maybe it will be but people seriously need to stop letting developers/publishers get away with this. 10 years ago this was NOT a thing because if the game wasn't finished it just didn't sell.

Its been quite a while since i've played a game like this that i wanted to like (because the game looks really good running on ultra settings on my pc) but i can't, the gun play doesn't feel great, the abilities of the javelin of your choosing are more fun to use but get old quickly. Oh and i almost forgot to mention the incredibly bad load times and there are loading screens galore in this game. Even after the patch that made it better it still takes too long (on my solid state drive). I still haven't finished the story yet but i hear that the end game content is virtually non-existent.

I fully expect Bioware to be closed soon by EA after this disaster.

I could see the seams of the game immediately, with heavy downgrades to the hub but with worse performance than was shown in the past and characters coming off as "NPCs" in that they dont really seem to care what you say and always like whatever you do.
Combat was "ok", but gunplay felt extremely unsatisfying both in terms of the feel of firing rounds into an enemy and how little damage they do for how insanely spongy enemies are.

Come round to launch day, I was hopeful that perhaps the combat opened up more, that it would evolve in the final game and that my woes about the story and characters would be proven wrong... sadly, it was more of the same.
A rushed, cliche of a story that was somehow so boring and uninspired that I would forget details moments after being told them.
Characters constantly try to crack crappy jokes for no good reason like it's a bad sitcom, never really showing you real traits that you can attach yourself to and actually like.
Combat is the same as in the demo, just more of the same with guns doing very little damage and it gets even worse in the higher difficulties where you get literally 1shot and can barely scratch an enemy with masterwork gear.

The only good things I can take away from the game are it's movement system and deep cosmetic customization. Disappointing.

2/10 - Deeply flawed on a level that just patching and updating cant fix.

In both cases, people spoke about weaker than usual writing and explained the game feels like a techdemo even with a decent basic game mechanism. The second such game I remember is Anthem, and the first one was Neverwinter Nights. And that nice old jewel we have found a legendary game. The similarities don't end with the focus on cooperative gameplay and initial reception. Both games were backed by a promise of long term refinement and support. And we can also say we can find a similar level of writing and story in both games.

I am sure many NWN fans already started laughing as they expect the comment. You have dull stories in Neverwinter Nights because anyone, even a total newbie can create stories in that game. Too bad in Anthem we get the same excellence in the only story the game has... straight from BioWare.

I both cases you can say: Heeey, nice graphics for its time, but a bit too repetitive. Yeah... NWN, a legendary game had this issue too. But if I want to make this comparison fair, I had to admit NWN was tile-based for a reason. Boring copy+paste in an open world game only lead to gamers feeling lost. And even in that ages old game, we can see our charactet often (not just heavy armor), have plenty of customization options (in toolset) but there we can also see the portrait of our characters.

And at that time you had an option to stop playing in the middle of the mission and continue later without losing a lot of progress.

Anthem is special because you can't save for the whole mission. And if you run out of time you might have to start the mission again next time. You have an hour in the afternoon, and an hour in the evening? That is pretty average. 3 times walking through the whole fort because you can't start at your javelin, 3 matchmaking phases, 3 times attempting to load the map on long loading screens, 2 disconnects and loading the fort and news at each and every disconnect?

You lost a few minutes. It shouldn't be a problem. Unless noone joins your "public expedition", so you have lag, disconnects while you have to solo the content designed for 4 people. So you run out of time, and at next attempt you might run out of time again. Frustration is present, progress isn't. It is hard to remember any other game that was half as bad as Anthem here.

If you expect to fly alone an offline singleplayer mode, with savegames inside missions (but out of combat situations) would solve this issue.

Hey even not showing news repeatedly, not starting in the basement after disconnect, no delays before starting the mission again would help. So there are easy to fix issues that cause a lot of problems for players. And players lose time from the time window before events that change the world and spoil many important parts of the story. So if you want to enjoy the story in a logical order without many bad spoilers and nonsense you are in tough luck.

Others might say there is nothing original in Anthem, but this kind of issue is pretty new. After all, if you remember how I have compared a few things to a Bioware classic, I have to say, even newbie module builders wouldn't create this big mess, not even with Script Wizard.

You know what are my 2 favorite things about Anthem? You can't start freeplay as a private game, you are forced to play with 3 people who might be on the other side of the map. So when you are stuck at an event that is designed for 4 people you can't invite friends because the game is already full. Best enjoyed with friends, right?

Bioware decided that if we rarely see small parts of the face of our character, but otherwise only the javelin is possible that will help immersion because of 1st person perspective. I am sure we all had immersion in previous Bioware titles. But when you can't feel attached to the character due to a broken story, technical issues and actually not seeing him/her that is a showstopper here.

Too bad this decision means that in a game where between the event loot and cosmetic updates are the goal, we can't have cosmetic updates for the character, only for the armor, which will make things far less interesting. But due to low possibile variety of loot they had to keep amount of loot pretty low, so most outlaws or dominion soldiers, or... come without any gear you can salvage from them.

Scavengers who salvage everything might not have useful salvage in their caches. Why? Because both crafting system, loot system and customization system is dumbed down and stupid. It means the game is rotten through the core.

The only good things are: EA willing to take a risk, financing coop gameplay, etc. No DLCs. So with their games as a service business model, we can expect more experimenting. So Origin Access: Premier and its effects are a plus. And that is about the end of it.

Anthem is a poor try at Looter-shooter genre by BioWare, a studio loved by so many players back in 2008-2012 and now desperately trying to survive and not end up being closed by EA. And unfortunately, they failed.

Anthem is broken, broken in so many ways it hurts to even talk about: gunplay is weak and unenjoyable, character progression is lacking and boring, enemies are stupid and too easy, loot is also boring and there is not even that much to loot, the content just doesn't exist, no random events, no quests (those to progress the main story don't count, as they are basically there to prolong the campaign).

Everything that make Looter-shooter A Looter-shooter is fundamentally broken and lacking in every way possible, and even something that you'd think BioWare will actually do better, the story and characters are also terrible, plot is a typical B-movie about evil dude who wants to do evil things, characters are there to annoy you, they don't progress the plot, they don't give you any missions, they talk about nonsense and do nothing apart from that.

And even when you think that things couldn't go any worse than they already are, you realize that more than 90% of the time you spent on the game, consists of LOADING SCREENS. I haven't seen any triple-A game so buggy and poorly optimized than this one (except for Mass Effect: Andromeda, of course. What a joke you are, BioWare).

Just for you to understand, to enter the game you should suffer through the first loading screen, then you spawn in the Main Hub where you can talk to vendors and go enter your Javelin to actually start playing, which requires another loading screen, then you choose your weapons and mods and go to mission list which requires ANOTHER loading screen, and after that you choose a mission and the game sends you TO ANOTHER LOADING SCREEN, and only after that you can actually start shooting bad guys. When you finished you quit the mission and BOOM, another loading screen to show you what you've earned, and OH BOY ANOTHER LOADING SCREEN TO LOAD THE MAIN HUB AGAIN. And to play the game you need to repeat that EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
And I'm not even mentioning constant crashes and disconnects from your friends that BioWare didn't fix since closed "VIP" beta.

I spent 30 hours in this game, I don't know how but I made it through this horrible experience and now I can be 100% sure to say, that BioWare is doomed. You can bet that after a while they will abandon this game, like they did with ME:A, and shortly after EA will close them. And this really does hurt me, because I loved BioWare, I loved all Mass Effects and all Dragon Ages (even the second one, yep) prior to 2012. And now we can see how BioWare is slowly and painfully dying.

    This is so sad.
    It truly is.

[character art] - Anthem has the ugliest women NPC's I've ever seen in a game. There isn't even one sexy woman in the entire game. The character art direction is so bad that it completely destroyed any fantastical escapism. The NPC's look like people I'd see at Walmart and Walmart is the last thing I want to be thinking of when playing an escapist video game.

[story] - The story is very mediocre and is brought down by the casual idle conversations you have with the random NPC's. Those casual convos don't have any impact on the story, it's just "hey, how you doing buddy? You good? I'm good, cool, cya." After a while you begin to dread talking to the NPC's because the conversation goes no where most of the time. In other Bioware games every conversation tend to contribute to something meaningful, but in Anthem it doesn't.

Your character is extremely emotional, cranky and complains all the time. He acts like an emotional soy boy constantly and it's VERY annoying. You can't play as a bad ass and instead you're constantly kissing everyone's butt, I hate it. I hate Tarsis and want to see it burn to the ground. I WISH I COULD SIDE WITH THE DOMINION. I bet all the hot women have sided with the Dominion and Tarsis is just filled with rejects & social outcasts.

[gameplay] The combat is fun. The best part of the game is being outside of Tarsis. I hate Tarsis so much. The characters look so god damn ugly I just dread going there. Okay, combat. Combat is fun, but it has the potential to get repetitive very quickly. After about two weeks I'll be bored of this game. So if $60.00 is worth two weeks of play time, go for it, but I'd wait until the game is $5.00 like Battlefront II.

[microtransactions] - I never buy stuff through micro transactions.

[graphics] - The frostbite engine is nothing short of amazing. The graphics are outstanding.

[environmental art & armor art] - The art direction for the environment's are beautiful & captivating. The javelins & weapons have beautiful art.

[tarsis bar] - The city of Tarsis has a bar. The bar is filled with the ugliest women i've ever seen and there's no good bar music. In every Bioware game the night club and bars always had good music, but this is the worst bar I've ever seen in the history of Bioware games.

[brothel] - THE GAME HAS NO BROTHEL, WTF?! There should be a brothel with tons of hot & sexy tarsis babes showing off the frostbite engines physics. Physics you ask? YES, BREAST & BUTT PHYSICS.

And if one long wait is not enough then fear not because EA has you covered with multiple loading screens each one getting longer than the last! You'll be in loading simulator heaven.

It's a real shame because while the game does look beautiful its just too buggy and what made EA release this in its current state only a week before quietly pushing out far superior Apex Legends is anybodys guess but to be a manager in EA you don't have to be intelligent, just greedy!

This is certainly not a Bioware game we know and it shows because the story is awful but then the world is littered with lore. The problem is you will spend more time reading that lore than playing the game and the cutscenes tell you very little. This is the same dev that made Andromeda right? And that was BioWare Montreal which is a very small division. Well that shows.

So on top of a terrible launch they have the audacity to charge full price for this heap of junk. No one can deny it looks great but haven't we learned yet that graphics just do not make a game if it doesn't have a strong element of gameplay and that urge to want to return and EA completely missed the target yet again.

Maybe it will get better, maybe it won't but one things for sure. It's just not ready yet.

The reason this did not get a 1 from me is because you can see they really made an effort on the graphics side so they get points for that.

In short, not everything is to be thrown away in this game but it clearly deserves its notes, hoping that BioWare will get its fingers out of its ass for Dragon Age 4.

I recommend waiting a year to see if it gets fixed, this is EA and they're known backing out poor performing products and this will be one."

    The good--
    - Graphics, they're pretty, if you have a video card that can handle them.

    - The javelins, lets be honest we all wanna be ironman and the controls make you feel like you are.

    - The world, its interesting, there's lots of lore, even if the story is a bit lacking.

    - the music is awesome, scores fit the scenes

    The bad--
    - The story, its... uh... weak at best. No spoilers, but... the current story at launch is unremarkable in any way.

    - The performance, its dismal. Even on top end hardware it tends to dip into the 50s and 40s, for a loot shooter, that's "not ok"... and while the graphics are great, they also lack detail to some degree when you slow down and really look.

    - Loading... Please wait. Mission starts, you got joined to existing mission, you've got 25s to get to team... oh you can see them... 5s left closer almost to them.... then it teleports you... with another loading screen. The mission end has a loading screen, after the mission ends it has a loading screen, between forge and town there is another loading screen, between mission and town there is a loading screen, I know why no one has ever assaulted fort tarsis and took it... they got stuck in a loading screen loop and the defenders just picked them off.

    - The loot... is perhaps the worst loot I've seen in any loot based game... ever. It's lackluster and uninteresting at best. BL, BL2, D1, D2, even games as old as diablo 1 had better loot. Hell, common drops in wow were more interesting to be honest. Did I mention they forgot to include the legendary support items, and for some classes after day 1 patch, even top level epic (36) don't drop anymore! Bonus.

    - End game, and yeap, I'm there. Been there for a week. Content... grinding out days and days and days of strongholds and freeplay... to get a legendary piece of gear... that you probably won't use. I'm currently my 20th GM2 stronghold without anything better than a masterwork dropping... and its still dropping crap I'd not have used at day 1 level 30 on a regular basis. Even the masterwork stuff I get (and god I've had a ton of it) is mostly junk. You end up trying to get 1% better this or that and the masterworked named items... just aren't very good for the most part. The disparity between a "decent" masterwork/legendary and a "junk" one is so big that only a few weapons are usable... rest you can just scrap, they're worthless.

    - Everything looks the same. Everything. Everywhere. It's pretty, but quite literally all the same.

    - Repetitive content. Choice of 3 strong holds, gm2 (3 is absurdly hard... i could solo kill 2/3 strong hold bosses on GM3, the mechanics are that uninteresting and predictable, but... it would literally take 6 hours due to them being bullet/ability sponges to such a huge degree, literally the only difference that matters between gm1-gm2-gm3... is hp. GM3 takes so long to kill things even if the drop rate was multiplied by 10 it would be too slow. Beyond the strongholds which are exceptionally repetitive, there are basically only 4 mission types "protect the point", "bring the popped off bits to the machine", "bring the lights to the ferrofluid speaker magnet", and "rescue people and kill the stuff"... and its that blatant with its presentation.

    - The ai is perhaps the worst ive ever seen. bar none.

    - most of the guns don't have actual bullets you fire, they hit. period. no way to dodge (unlike all other loot shooters for the most part.) There are exceptions, but largely its not terribly compelling and limits how much better you can get effectively.

    - fort tarsis is so slow its miserable... even running (which is almost normal walking speed for a human rather than ponderously slow crawling.)

    - Bugs... prior to day 1 patch, other than the loading screens, it was the largest problem. It's STILL a big problem though, there are a multitude of bugs from simple things like entire team wiping means bosses won't show up to not being able to res people to sound suddenly stopping working to video glitches to controls ceasing to work to cut scenes not showing, to mechanical things like being able re-open same chest every-time team wipes (and that was so abused you couldn't join a GM1-3 group for 48h that wasn't people exploiting it.)

-The loot system is shallow, obtrusive, and insulting. If you want anything interesting, "GIVE US MORE MONEY". 90% of the items you receive are trash and fail to have any useful statistics
-The UI (on the PC) is garbage. You can dig through piles of menus and find nothing. It is bloated and clunky beyond belief.
    - The sound breaks 50% of the time I load a new screen, which is OFTEN.
-Loading screens are abysmal. With the installation on a SSD, I spend nearly equal times in the loading screens and playing a mission.
-More on loading. The "home" area is split between 3 different areas. WHY? And WHY are there loading screens between them.

Everything about this game just feels wrong. They had fantastic combat, a great background story and lore, great graphics and animation, and then flopped the execution. This BARELY deserves a 2.

New games today keep looking better and better, but for some reason, they keep leaving optimization and bug fixes to after release date. Anthem is one of these games with multiple serious bugs, optimization problems, connectivity issues, constant crashing, lack of content, a small map with just a couple unique places and another loading screen after another,

My first day felt like I was being pushed to go and shop items in Vanity Store constantly. What is hilarious is that there isn't even much to buy in there. $10 skins for a game which costs $60 is just one of the disgusting things in this game. Some Bioware loyalists keep defending this by saying "you can buy them with in-game credits". Yes, you can by grinding around 5-20 hours for them. None of these armor parts are lootable or be gained as a reward from missions. Is game basically is just a looter-shooter, then why there is no great loot to be gained anywhere? Weapons are just the same with a different name and colors. None of them has anything unique to them and other loot like parts are just to build stronger versions of these weapons and other invisible mods to your Javelin.

The world of Anthem looked great in the E3 trailer. It really did and I was excited to get in there. I just didn't expect the whole map to be more of the same seen in the trailer with a huuuge downgrade. In the trailer we see these animal running around, birds flying in flocks, those big walker things walking around while one gets destroyed with amazing fireworks. You know a beautiful dynamic world like many other games are starting to have now. None of that is in the actual game we got. Bird respawn mid-air front of your eyes and does only have one flight pattern which is forward and honestly, they don't look great even from a long distance. Those walkers are just lifeless unanimated objects and even those beautiful fireworks are gone.

Actual flight distance has been also downgraded. Now we need cooling around half the time that Javelin did in the E3 trailer. Overall flying is the best thing in this game and for that, I'm giving 2 out of 10 and not 1 out of 10.

Briefly, this game has a lot of great ideas, but terrible execution.

Nothing really works and is buggy as hell, weapon affixes do not make any sense, every second quest you start is not working.
But its technical failures are not its biggest problems: The story is uninspired and poorly written. When its not super cringy, its boring. Its a looter shooter without loot. There are 10 unique weapon models and 4 armor skins per javelin, with two skins being locked behind a paywall. Thats it.
There is one map with only one biome - grass and ruins, so everything looks the same. I was super hyped for this game: "Looter Shooter with a bioware story, where you can fly like iron man? Awesome!" - that were my initial thoughts when the first reveal trailer was released. (Btw, that trailer alone is enough reason to hate bioware, as they were blatantly lying to their customers, since the actual game does not come close to the game they showcased there.) But when the game came out, i was so bored that i went to bed after a two hour long torture.
Everything feels like the game was started from scratch 6 months ago, not 6 years ago.

It's obvious that Anthem didn't have enough development time, but had some great potential. It's a real shame, that everything turned out this way. Even now, the game can bring out positive emotions. Hasty climbers have sudden falls. No matter how ironic this proverb may seem, it's incredibly relevant for Anthem.
