First of all I have to say that I didn't buy the game. I've only played the 10-hour trial on EA Access.

Baldurs Gate marked my early teen years an helped me learn english, MDK 2 was one of my favorite Dreamcast games, I LOVE Kotor and Mass Effect is my favorite trilogy all times (and I am talking about trilogies in general, including games, films and books). I even loved them when everyone hated, I don't think the Mass Effect 3 ending was bad and despite of all its problems I think Andromeda is a good game.

But let's talk about Anthem...well this game is UNACCEPTABLE and the worst mark in Bioware history. I don't even know where to start, the load times are disgraceful (I expect a lot of memes about it), the story is not even close to what we've seen in the past from Bioware, the gameplay is boring, broken and repetitive. This game SUCKS! This will obviosuly be a big commercial failure, I just hope it will not be the end of Bioware, I hope they will learn from it and maybe some day we will see Bioware making great games like ME and KOTOR again.

Let's sum up all the BS Bioware/EA spewed regarding the game, and the concerns bioware fans had, about this "Multiplayer-Live-Service-Game-With-Story-Focus-That-Nobody-Have-Done-Before" crap. By know, everybody knows that these statements were BS, just as all people that had a brain, or any knowledge about game design have been saying since this project was announced.

"...Microtransactions will not affect gameplay..." - In a looter shooter game, where the (supposed) goal of the game is to find cool looking LOOT, how is cosmetic microtransactions different than paying for power in a competitive game? IT'S THE SAME THING. You are affecting the enjoyment of the game (not just because of the game design, which in these situations is made purposefully grindy), but the "pride and accomplishment" you get from EARNING things from FAIR gameplay. There is NO FAIR gameplay with games like Anthem. The game is DESIGNED to push you to spending money, on the very things you are playing the game for (in this case - looks). Aren't they clever, tricking players with semantics?

I'm not gonna even bother with the "story/narrative" because: NEWS FLASH! NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE STORY IN A MULTIPLAYER GAME, especially when you are playing with other people. Such formula will NEVER work. It has been proven time and time again. Even if the game had the most amazing story/narrative/quests/characters (and with anthem, it's the complete opposite), it would still NOT change that fact.

And guess what? They knew this, and they didn't even try. The "narrative", the characters, the "story", THEY ARE THE WORSE THEY HAVE EVER BEEN. In fact, these are below even other boringly average games, like the Division. And that coming form a studio that was KNOWN for these things, IT'S F*CKING EMBARRASING! IT's SAD!

That's right. The main point BIOEA was selling this game to their fans (those that liked story-driven Bioware RPGs), WAS A LIE. It was a lie from the very beginning. And they KNEW it. WE KNEW IT. But they went with it anyway, and were pushing it to the very last moment.
    - - -

let's pull some quotes (from IGN's "Anthem: Full BioWare Interview on Gameplay Features - E3 2018" video):

"Mark Darrah: So, a great story about Bioware is about characters that you can have a connection with, uhm, choices you get to make, and feeling like the story is about you. ... "Our World, My story.""

Well, that's BS. Anthem falls flat on it's face in that regard. Just as expected.

    - - -

"Mark Darrah: What is unique about anthem, is that it's a living shared world, where you experience the Story of your actions."

Again, complete BS statement, and a lie. A lie, softly directed at bioware fans.

    - - -

"Casey Hudson: So what we try to do, is we think about the new experiences that we are trying to unlock for players, so what is the fantasy fulfillment, what are the new things that you actually get to go and do, THAT ARE DIFFERENT FROM WHAT YOU'VE PLAYED BEFORE."

Again - another lie. No matter if he meant "different from what you've played before" in terms of comparing to other games, or Anthem and it's "mission/quest design". BOTH OF THESE THINGS ARE INCORRECT when it comes to Anthem.

No point in getting into more detail here. You can watch Skillup's reviews on anthem, and see if these BOLD statements from Mark Darrah and Casey Hudson are true. [Hint - THEY ARE NOT!]

    - - -
And isn't it cute, how there are rumors/whispers floating about how Bioware's future is is tightly dependent on Anthem's failure/success? What is this? some sort of driving people towards "sympathy purchases"?

You know what, Bioware? IF YOU STILL MADE THE GAMES WE WANTED/EXPECTED from you, we would've cared about your "future". But with generic crap like Anthem, which is obvious change of focus for the studio, and being EXACTLY what we though it's going to be (money-making online crap, that's not even as good as other FREE games like it), the most proper response at this point would be: F*CK YOU!

And f*ck all of the EA influencers, which main task was to "convince" people (the fanbase) that like Bioware's story driven action RPGs, that they should "give Anthem a chance", or even bully them to LIKEing it, just to keep BW's ass from EA's chopping block, DESPITE IT BEING A GAME THEY KNOW THE FANBASE WOULDN'T LIKE, OR CARE ABOUT (live service, multiplayer looter shooter with MT cr*p). Same thing as failout 76.

No lessons were learned, from all of the failures of other companies, that tried the "try something new", which is nothing more than "- We wanna capitalize on the current money makers, f*ck our customer base, we will strong-arm them into liking our new direction". Which is what EA's motto is, and it's exactly what Anthem is. Uninspired, boring, repetitive, appealing to NOBODY, cookie-cutter live-service EA crap, marketed with lies and false promises.

Also, Mass Effect "Died" For THIS!???

F*ck this game. The score given is a STATEMENT.

This game is a complete mess. Controls are weird, there are random bugs that crash the whole game. The weapons miss even at point blank...
Then, if you ever manage to make it work, you get to see how much of a mobile game this is.
Paid progression, click x times on something to make another thing... It is downright boring.
The worst AAA game in a long time.

I wish I had something different to say than all the other negative reviews but by now if you have read a few you more or less know the problems (no point in repeating it). The pathetic defense of "the game will be good one day" just doesn't cut it for me. Far too many good games out there to be bothered waiting for them to one day *maybe* fix the problems.

I gave Bioware grace after Inquisition, because it was a poorly done open-world RPG, and I gave the same quarter after Andromeda, but this game has been in development for seven years. Seven years. Very bland, very repetitive game. Too generic for my taste. With the lack of content it certainly is not worth anyone's 60$. Do not buy!
So this is where Bioware is today? From Baldur's Gate 1, MDK2, Baldur's Gate II, Neverwinter Nights, Kotor, Jade Empire, Mass Effect to this.

Anthem is the latest new looter shooter IP, but incredibly fails to learn any lessons that have been learned from Destiny and The Division. Anthem has an average story that lasts around 15 hours - which is disappointing coming from Bioware - and a severe lack of unique, or even interesting end game content.

Online, Multiplayer, Co-Op are all fundamental facets to this game that are completely impaired by the game itself.

Online = frequent disconnects resulting in loading screens, lost experience, lost loot and forcing a repeat of the mission you were on.

Multiplayer = the only time you are actually spending time with others is on missions or in the launch bay (serves no purpose, identical options as Fort Tarsis). While on missions, there is ZERO way to communicate with other players aside from using VOIP that hardly ever seems to work, that permits others to opt out of and have no idea of that. There is no pinging for data sharing between players, there is no marking targets, there is no chat... there is nothing to support multiplayer within the game that works consistently.

Co-Op = There is no way to from a group and coordinate anything prior to a mission within the structure of the game. If you rely on the game to match make you, then you end up with random teammates that could all be in the same Javelin as you, unable to initiate combos and they may not even have skills equipped that allow for combos in the first place. Which leads us right back to the start... why is there Co-Op is the foundation of its effectiveness is totally random and luck based on some unknown matchmaking system.

I could go on, but I feel my point was made. Anthem is a pointless game that has no place in your library. There are games out there that deliver on what Anthem was attempting to bring to the table, but those games don't suck, unlike Anthem... it sucks. This is a prime example of EA pushing a developer into an arena they do not belong. DICE or RESPAWN should have made Anthem, Bioware should have been working on a new Star Wars, Mass Effect or Dragon Age game. This crap is why people don't go looking for a Ford Motor Company Washing Machine when theirs breaks down, they go buy a Whirlpool.

I understand that demos (the one 2 years ago) are always prettier because they try to highlight the best parts of the game, but this is straight up false advertising.
    3. Early access and it already had micro-transactions in it...8 bucks for a skin that's not even top tier. this is not a free to play game, this is outright insulting.
    4. Loading screens for anywhere between 2 to 5 minutes to even crashes, horrific facial animation glitches, enemies disappearing, enemies not attacking you back or straight up teleporting and one-shoting you, rubber-banding, invisible walls...

Who knows. After Mass Effect Andromeda, we now know the Bioware that we once knew does not exist anymore; only in name (which is now sullied and to be discarded). In the end, this is a good thing. Hopefully this spells the end of these loot shooters, and we gamers can get back to the high-quality single-player experiences we are looking for. I really wanted the game to succeed. And I still want the game to succeed. But current state of the game is tragical. There are too many technical issues and also boring and uniform loot, same missions mechanics all over again and all the bosses in game are just titans. Anthem currently lacks variability. It feels rushed. I'm really disappointed.

I cannot write a full length review on this because I really don't have the desire to, but in a quick synopsis... this is just another heavily marketed service game layered with MTX that releases unfinished and receives updates as necessary. This is an entirely anti-consumer practice and needs to be called out if there is any hope of receiving quality games in the future.

+ Beautiful world design and graphics
+ Fly anywhere mechanic is cool
    + Some fun co-op moments

    - Home world is lifeless
    - Quests are repetitive
    - MTX is unnecessary
    - Loot balancing is awful
    - Terrible facial animations
    - Boring story (from Bioware???)
    - Bullet sponge enemies
    - Weapons all look the same
    - Loading times (Played on an NVME drive, shut up "Journalists")
    - Service-based game

Overall, this a bad effort by Bioware, it is sad to see as I thoroughly enjoyed Mass Effect 1 & 2, but it seems to be an inevitable end by now... Anthem may be the final nail in the coffin as EA has no qualms about shutting down a studio that does not meet lofty financial expectations. EA needs to give their teams more time to develop games, and not bring in anti-gamer consultants like Anita Sarkeesian... cannot understand that move, beyond bizarre. 3/10 is a gift.

The Central Hub is dead and lifeless, character models are standing around seeming to chat but you hear dead silence. DLC isn't going to fix these issues. i give 1 point for the mobility aspect being fun but even that feels awkward when transitioning from flying to shooting etc it breaks the fast-paced feel you get when flying through combat or retreating.

Bioware made this and from them, you would expect a thrilling story that captures you and get you invested into the game but nope something went wrong with the story and it's a big buggy mess.

The only good things about the game are flight mechanics and the graphics, combat. That's it.

Emptiness seems to haunt Anthem and you can feel it from Fort Tarsis up to a small world filled with living creatures barely there. The world looks good but it's missing so much content for 60 dollars. Hate to say it but Destiney 2 had much more content at launch compared to this. Some mechanics are just poorly made that you start to really question the reality on who really made this game and how did it make onto the final game. Some mechanics are just missing like the Waypoint you can't even put a waypoint on a map for this type of game. It's just something that should already be in the game.

The loading screen sure the loading times has been shorted but the problem still remains. They should focus on removing most of the loading screens cause it's supposed to be open world but it's not. Buy Anthem and you get a loading simulator with the game. There was an early alpha and then there was the Vip demo and then Demo yet most of the bugs were reported early on and most of it should have been fixed by this stage. The Demo was supposed to show players a ting portion of the game but in reality, it only showed how poorly made this game truly is. Even the Division 2 beta had more content in it than the Anthem Demo. Right now this game is just barely worth 5 bucks in my opinion. There is so little content for the price tag they ask for it. So much is missing from the game and this game feels almost like an early access title that you pick up from steam hoping that they will update it and make it better as time goes. Shame on Bioware and shame on EA this game could have been one of the greatest game ever. Stay away from this game until they really start to add good content or just wait until it goes to sale for 5 bucks. Right now the score for this game is just a simple 0 out of 10.

As a shooter-looper game I actually don't mind the grinding part that most complaint. For me it's something that give me some drive to keep playing, so I am always making some progress when I want to have some few hours of fun. But even with this mindset, this game is purely gold on how a lazy developer could do. For whatever stupid lame story reason, you have to go here defend that, collect this. Every freaking single time with zero variation. And to "prove your worthiness" you need to do something that other normal game would only ask you to do as achievement instead of actual gameplay. What's worse? if you are in a team, only 1 guy who make the kill shot or picking up are counted. So basically its asking you to play solo.

it's just boring as hell. The gunplay is so weak that i feel like it's weaker than the division 1, it's basically just all about your ability, which I really hate it being so supernatural and witch like effect instead of being a true "mech". The flying part is so mediocre and slow that it's ruin the whole experience to me.

If you want some fun shooter looter, go to warframe. If you want to spend some money, find some charity organization or buy some cosmetic for warframe. That game is a free to pay that's done right.
If you want to save Bioware/Mass Effect, no it's done for. Only thing you could do is don't buy anything from EA again and hope it's gone so it won't keep ruining and then closing the game studio.

A lot of games are hard to review - Anthem isn't one of them. It is easy to identify the strengths it has - excellent graphical fidelity and wonderful flight mechanics - and even easier to identify the many, many flaws.

The narrative is a botched attempt at a traditional Bioware story, shoved inside a looter shooter. It fails dramatically pretty much immediately after the first cutscene. It's not that the voice acting is bad - because it really isn't - but the presentation of it means you don't care what is happening, ever.

This isn't helped by banal environments, which consists of forest ruin after forest ruin, non-stop, over and over again, interrupted by massive loading times. The game looks beautiful, but is boring to look at after an hour or so - that seems like a contradiction, but there's only so long you can look at the same pretty picture before you want to look at something different. Anthem provides no visual diversity.

As everyone suspected before launch, this is Destiny Lite. The core combat is the familiar bullet-sponge looter shooter the market is now flooded with, but Anthem is a terrible example of it because, again, the gameplay loop lacks diversity. You do the same thing, over and over again, and when the flight mechanics stop being fun, the whole game stops being fun.

I know people will say there's 'potential' here, but honestly this is a full price, AAA game that should be a lot better than this on release. We shouldn't be paying to be glorified Beta testers for DLC down the line.

Ultimately, Anthem feels like the game Bioware had to make rather than the one they wanted to make. The lack of soul in this title is resoundingly obvious.

Also, maybe "more importantly", the game is unplayable. I have a more than capable rig and internet connection, and yet the game crashes randomly and keeps disconnecting from the network. I really like how they say its a problem on 'my end'. Best part: it also happens when I play solo. Best appart again: it happens WHILE im watching a cutscene, SOLO. Best part again, when that happens, the game sends you back to the start menu, AFTER a loading screen. Then youre on for 2 more loading screens.

Ive had 11 disconnections and more than 30 rubber banding situations (3 caused me to die, thus reload) IN 2 HOURS of gameplay! Ping of 6, download of 20m/s. 1 hour being solo.

This game is abysmal. Gameplay and the grafics are down the craper. The story and the writen charaters are just bad. The NPC in this game are bad made. Everything is bad made in this game. The servers are in a piss poor state. This game has so many loading screens, they are all over the place. You wait longer than you play in this game, the loading screens are so bad that it makes fallout 4 look like a fluent game. The only thing that gobsmacked me about this game is that it was in development for six years. It feels like it was made in a half year to a year at most. It feels like they are creatively bankrupt. There is nothing new or original in this game and it is not even well done. For being such a massive game it takes forever to download. The weapons in this game feels like they are all the same and they feel like peashooters and the javalines are unintressting to play. If it was a free game than it will have been easyer for me, than I can just have discarded this game and moved on. This game cost 60$. The game might get 10-15$ if you go over the contents in this game. Expand

The Bioware that made games like KotOR and Dragon Age Origins is dead.

Welcome to the producer of live service bullet sponge games.

If I would need to describe Anthem in one word then this word would be pathetic.

Two genuine advises: 1) Do not buy this piece of content! 2) Cancel your pre-order while you still can! The main issues: a) The gun-play is mediocre at best (and almost all the weapons feel the same). b) The world is dead (it looks pretty but it is soulless and barren). c) The story is utter

    c) The story is utter rubbish;
    d) Fort Tarsis (it is a local hub) is pathetic and annoying (in general and the models of characters are straightforward ugly, their animations are laughable at best; the main character's movement speed is unbearably slow; etcetera).
    e) The loading screens are aplenty and brutal (2+ min and I have Anthem installed on a SSD), they are literally everywhere and they render the game almost unplayable.

Imagine doing the same encounter over and over and over and over and over. That's essentially Anthem. Boring.

Story is nonexistent. No interesting NPCs exist and are there just to waste your time and pad the game. They had to cut 3 hours out of the 13 hour campaign in an update because it sucked and people think this is a positive thing. Since when is cutting THREE HOURS of your

That's just a testament to how bad this game sucks because I've never heard of any other game ever doing something like this.

End game is also very limited. You'll experience all of it in a few hours. So if you are hoping for a good end game experience, I'm sorry but you will not get that.

After a while, suspicion sets in: perhaps EA doesn’t believe in BioWare anymore, and had them release not only unpolished, but basically unfinished product to cut losses and avoid another total rework. [Issue#237, p.44]

If you want to see Anthem’s lush jungle and glistening Javelins, do it right away — this game is losing audience fast, and there’s almost nothing to do after the campaign ends. Or check it out on YouTube to save yourself some nerves and money.

It's obvious that Anthem didn't have enough development time, but had some great potential. It's a real shame, that everything turned out this way. Even now, the game can bring out positive emotions. Hasty climbers have sudden falls. No matter how ironic this proverb may seem, it's incredibly relevant for Anthem.
