I got to say, I love this game. Playing it brings back all the joy of the original film from '79. The spaces, the equipment, the way everything is falling apart, the creepy droids, and of course the alien itself. While I love the Alien, and how it just goes around where it wants, I'm not as thrilled about dealing with the other survivors and droids. The most effective way to deal with them is to shoot them, but then that brings the Alien. Another low point is my two fellow survivors. I know so little about them, and really don't care about them. I have no motivation to help and or save them. Also, there is a lot of back tracking in this game. To get to your goal, you have to go back to the beginning of the level or earlier to do something. From the very start, there are areas you can't get to until you get a tool, that after several hours of play I still haven't gotten. The story line is crap so far, the voice acting is bland and often the mouths don't move with the words. For all the attention to detail this game has, I'm really disappointed in the acting. Despite all that, I love this game. It's very addicting. Just when you think you avoided the alien and come out from cover, it ends up right behind you and you die. There is a great amount of frustration in this game, but just getting to a save point is often a victory in and of itself. It's a game that has the atmosphere of bioshock, but none of it's gripping story line. Yet, it's just as addictive as bioshock. I give it a 9 because the graphics, the ambience, the lore is top notch. I knocked off because of the frustratingly way you have to often back track, the poor story line and limited character development. Expand

Not only is it beautiful, but it is also one of the best optimized games I've ever seen. My system is not top of the line, and with all settings on ultra the game was running absolutely flawlessly. This game is a technical marvel.

The atmosphere and sound design is amazing, everything in the game has been so painstakingly created while keeping faith to its source material. Everywhere you look there is immense detail, so much work and passion went into this product and it shows.

It took me about 18 hours to beat the game, which is a really respectful length for a survival-horror game like this. Some complain it is too long but for me, a fan who has waited a long time to play it, the length felt perfect; I even could have gone for a little more. You actually get to fully explore the station you're on through the story, unlike games like Dead Space 2 where you only see a tiny fraction of the space of the structure.

The gameplay is stealth-focused, you're given some tools for deterring your many enemies but mainly you will be sticking to the shadows and hiding in cupboards as you make your way through the game. The alien, the prime antagonist of the game, is stunningly recreated and an absolute terror to deal with. This isn't your average horror game enemy, this thing is relentless. It is smart, it is fast, and it will punish the hell out of you for making a mistake. The other enemies you face are more forgiving but still deadly and they all have interesting reactions with one another.

The game uses a manual saving system with save points spread throughout its levels. For me this was a big plus as it cuts down on save scumming and gives you a real fear of failure, because if you die you may lose progress.

The story is solid and if you're a fan of the Alien series you will be delighted with all the extra lore this game provides to extend your favorite universe.

I honestly have no solid complaints about this game, some of the early segments can feel too hard but it's only because you don't yet understand what you're doing wrong. This game doesn't hold your hand, and you'll quickly learn what is getting you killed.

I cannot say enough good things about this game.

Creative Assembly, thank you for returning the Alien franchise to glory, and please bring us more.

    PROS:
    - Very detailed world with good ambience, it really feels like you are inside a rundown space station.
    - The Alien AI got some bashing, but I can say that it always kept me on my toes and posed a good challenged and instilled a sense of dread. The first 20 or so times will really freak you out.
    - VR implementation was good enough, far from perfect but it shows that the did indeed gave it some love.

    CONS:
    - A bit too long for its own good. By the middle/end of the game it drags a lot, reusing areas, forcing a lot of arbitrary backtracking (There's a scene where you have to run around through the same area back and forth 3 times). It's a bit like Dead Space: you go somewhere to do something, once you get there it doesn't work/it is useless/it's destroyed, so you are rerouted somewhere to do something else which will also not accomplish anything at all.
    - Gameplay gets a bit repetitive and later you learn how to game the Alien AI and that knowledge combined with the flamethrower makes it become more like a nuisance than a fearless unkillable stalker (granted, it happens after several hours of tense gameplay, so this actually felt like a relief).

Conclusion: If you have a DK2, don't think twice, get this game. Unless you don't like to experience dread and fear in a videogame or you have some serious heart condition.

Survival Horror. Why do we love these games? What are we expecting from a game of this genre when we first hit the play button? We love this genre, because it's not about the monsters, it's not about the setting really, it's about the player. While our emotions are amplified in a world where we can't predict what's waiting for us behind the corner, we feel more and more alive because we behave here as naturally as we would if we were really there. We would hide, we would listen for noises, we would walk with caution, and try to survive.
This game really brings us what we were hoping for. The beast is as majestic and smart, as I always imagined to be. Alan Dean Foster wrote some very good book adaptations of the movies and even enhanced the world created by Ridley Scott. It was about time, for the gaming industry to approach the concept with some vision.
Level design, atmosphere: captures the soul of the '79 movie without a doubt, also it's a bit familiar to those who played Dead Space (those guys could have made a mean Alien game also...I think). While the game does not innovate in many areas regarding the level design it gets the job done to create the setting for your deadly adventure through the station.
Musical score, art style, every little gizmo, CRT screen, everything shows that the designers were working hard to stay true to the original concept of Alien, the movie where all started.
If you are fan of the Alien series, pick up this game, it's worth it. If you are not, it is still one of the best survival horror games released lately, even if you don't feel that nostalgic scent of the original movie.
There are a few issues we can talk about... Facial animations are pretty stiff and unrealistic, lip sync is mediocre at best in cutscenes and plain bad otherwise. But this visual issues are not a big problem because we are not really here for that. And there is the story... while it's pretty good, I really feel like they should have been bolder when writing it. When someone tries too hard not to break any element that makes the game a true integration in the Alien universe somehow is too cautious when writing a story and any writer would suffer of the lack of freedom in their creativity.
Bottom line is: This is that type of game that will stay in your heart even when you are not playing, and every moment is a thrill when you are. I can only say: Thank you for that crew that finally brought us the Alien in it's true splendor in a game.

How alone, let alone other words, do Gamespot and IGN feel now? It's as if the reviewers there thought it would be some kind of mushfest with guns n the usual. Maybe they weren't yet born when Alien came out.

Class act by Creative Assembly, but a dud to be with Sega, who could not even bring a PC DVD Rom to market here in a continent called America. Good luck. Great game!

Failed on AI and general behavior of the O'Bannon, Scott, Brandywine concept of the alien. If they had hired me to develop the AI it would be the least completed game due to sheer player anxiety of having to contend with a creature that is more unpredictable. The alien would optimize it's survival through silence and stealth which is what every prime predator relies on. It would have certainly used a fuzzy set over all of it's unidentified signals and would have dedicated more time to simply waiting on model optimization constantly reevaluating it's priority locations with each time it receives new information and assigning a best choice based on signals.

Manual doors would account for active analog control, meaning player controls speed of opening and closing ultimately entry to hide providing a balance of security over speed. Shifting to change view angles in hides would also be analog as they currently are but would emit sounds depending on how rapidly player shifts weight.

I would have excluded the involuntarily squelch of the tracker which destroyed the game. The tracker was an obvious stop-gap for an AI model which was under developed for some reason and the tracker was the real nemesis in the game leaving the alien reduced to it's determined and persistent henchman. The tracker would also require batteries just like the flashlight, only both would last longer, certainly the flashlight would considering what year it's supposed to be in the story (you'd think they would have figured out the longer lasting light bulb).

The critical path would have remained focused on the mission which was to understand what happened to the Nostromo and hence Ripley's mother. Instead the flight recorder was discovered surprisingly early in the game and Ripley just seemed to give up on finding the contents in hopes of having it spoon fed to her by a third party. Then again I might be wrong on this and have missed important points in the plot because I had to run through the game thanks to a very poor design decision. Also, considering how much more effective the alien could have been I would have allowed for the player to turn down objectives in lieu of staying focused on investigating the Nostromo event and getting off Sevastopol as quickly as possible.

For me I was more alert and apprehensive up to the point where I had the first encounter with the alien, which again, I understand the designers probably wanted to ease the player into the reality there is an alien, but it only highlighted the fact that the scariest room in the game was also one of the first on Sevastopol. Why? Because I didn't know if the alien would come for me or not, I was expecting it since the docking procedure would certainly have been noisy. Also, firearms should have hurt the alien, only that the alien would bleed and compromise the integrity of the ship rendering the player as good as dead. But I would have preferred no firearms on Sevastopol because any one of the NPCs who were armed could have just as easily shot at it and again, ship has hole, everyone is exposed to conditions of space and die. So they don't shoot at it because they're programmed not to? Breaks immersion. No firearms except perhaps Marlows ship that would have introduced firearms later when necessary to the plot.

Advice: never use tracker and never hide in lockers or cabinets from alien, simple place concealment between you and the alien because it's practically blind and stupid. I literally did circles around a mini zamboni and similar objects to shake the stupid thing. Walk almost everywhere and so long as you aren't making tight circles, it outpaces the alien most of the time. I recommend when first entering a level study the map, make a plan for how to get to your points and move. The designers apparently thought it was more terrifying to be forced to constantly move instead of losing your sanity in a locker over several hours planning your survival. Never use firearms while you know alien is on Sevastopol. Don't use flashlight in ducts, instead use molotov or flamethrower. Don't use devices like noise maker, it only agitates the alien and escalates it's sense of your presence from mere suspicion to certainty.

Other than that I do commend the Creative Assembly folks for giving us what they labored over and I really only experienced one minor defect. As a software engineer myself I know that alone is a testament to how effective the development process was. But it lost it's potential through pinnacle design choices that stifled the games success as a horror game. I really enjoyed the attention to detail, but the set of "Alien" invokes dread because of it's affiliation of the alien character not the reverse despite Cobb and Foss having fabricated a rational explanation for a vessel that complimented the alien.

I have never wrote a review to this site, even for top games like The Last Of Us. I always used Metacritic for user reviews, general scores of games etc.

But honestly this time I had to create an account, willingly, for this masterpiece. I usually dont like horror games like outlast, in which you are usually defenseless.

But this game, has the perfect atmosphere. Games starts on a slow pace, but after the first encounter your adrenaline level goes x100. It is really like being in shoes of Ripley, they achieved this by extremely detailed (polished and well thought enviromental details) enviroment, high quality graphics, SOUND EFFECTS (one of the best I have seen in my 30 years of gaming life), and AI.

Before I played the game I had big doubts about the AI. That is why I tired to play on "HARD" difficulty, I couldnt survive 100 meters of exploring when I reached a section of the game (I dont want to spoil, and wont go into details). Alien is really giving you some serious trouble on HARD. It became so agressive at some point I hid and cried in a cabin like a 12yo girl for 15 mins - jokes aside - in the end it ripped the cabin door first and then killed me brutally :p

I really want a sequel to this game, it is one of the best horror/thriller games I have ever played since Resident Evil 1 and Dead Space 1.

Oh there is one thing bad about the game but it is nit a reason to give it a 9. Antialiasing options on PC is too low, I wish this game would support far higher level AA. It would be a perfect game Alien game.

    10/10 anyway...

I play on a PS4 and your headphones can plug right into the controller. I'm currently in the medical area now and I'll spend 5 minutes hiding in a locker too scared to come out. As I creep down a hallway, the motion tracker might just beep once, and it sets me into panic mode and I scramble to remember a place I can hide. It's giving me nightmares and I can't put a price tag on something that can achieve that.

Nor is it the ripping, tearing, maw of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Isolation is slow and atmospheric. You’re not playing a badass marine with a machine gun–you’re not a moody, misunderstood loner with an endless belt feed of ammunition and a chip on your shoulder. You’re an engineer. Amanda Ripley. Who has volunteered to join a doomed mission to retrieve the black box of a lost ship, the Nostromo–quite possibly her mother’s last words and the only clue she has to her fate.

The fear that accompanies this search for a loved one follows you throughout the entirety of the game. It paints itself on the walls–it taps chisels into your breathing as you join Amanda in holding her breath in order to avoid detection."

Alien: Isolation plays like Amnesia so at its core it’s a hide and seek game. However, it is at least 10 hours too long and it starts feeling extremely repetitive after a while. The level design doesn’t change, you are expected to do the same things over and over in prolonged corridors, plenty of backtracking and unfair difficulty. I liked it the first few hours, but it did not hold my attention for long to the point I have decided to call it quits.

I can’t really recommend Alien: Isolation. And I believe the best alien game award still belongs to Aliens vs Predator 2.

PS: The game recommends you to play in hard difficulty. Don’t do it. It is already an unfairly difficult game and hard difficulty will make your experience unnecessarily more frustrating.

Pros: The graphics and atmosphere are both fantastic (for the most part)
Encounters with the Xenomorph are suspenseful and you must use stealth to get past them.

Cons: The game drags on in many places

Stealth elements are poorly implemented (I've played cheap indie 10$ games that have better stealth mechanics than this)

The game has many embarrassing glitches especially with alien encounters. it becomes hard to know why something worked and now it isn't. The Xenomorph might be very close and looking at you but not see you, then later he can see you through smoke and fire way in the distance. Your weapons become invisible, and will float in the air.

Opening doors and turning on generators etc, are tedious. You have to hold three buttons to open a door. then overly simple puzzles are used in other areas.

Alien Isolation is one of the best atmospheric games I've ever played. Each part feels good to play and heightens the experience even further.

    Main Enemies:
The main antagonist The Alien does its part and does it well. The Alien will learn as to be expected as it's supposed to be the perfect organism. Each restart of an area greatly increases the Aliens awareness towards the player, it will scavenge areas that are potential targets and will most likely you will be caught in.

    Side Enemies:
The Working Joes (the evil ones) also act as a threat you also shouldn't ignore. While they aren't a 1 hit KO like the alien is, they still pose as threat, and can and will hunt you down.

Face Huggers, what more can I say. They are sneaky, they are what you need them to be, if you wanted the alien, in a smaller form factor, then you have it. They pop out when it's least expected, and that can be worrisome.

    The Music:
The OST is top notch, it gives a feeling unlike any other. It perfectly screams "run" or "you need to hide and be careful". The background sounds encapsulate the feeling of "look over your shoulder".

    The Weaponry:
Blast, Distract, & just a fun good time. While saving ammo can be better, when you are being hunted, there is no shame in nearly using it all if needed.

I don't have anything negative to say about Alien Isolation. It hits all the right points, at the right times, in the right moments even if you've never seen the movies, (which you should!).

If you enjoy/enjoyed Outlast, you'll enjoy Alien Isolation.

    Giving Alien Isolation 10/10

10/10 does not mean "perfect", 10/10 means there are no traits that could be improved even if it tried.

PS: Here is hoping for Alien Isolation 2!

In the game, you have the device which can track alien, and that is your biggest protection, but the device is so stupid, you can track his movement but 20 seconds later all that info you have about him doesn't matter, he will just spawn wherever you are. This game would be great if the tracking device had more meaning and a bigger area of tracking info (in the game it is really, really small) so you could use that information instead of hiding all the time. Second, stealth is a mechanic that I personally hate, and it is essentially the main thing you are going to be doing in this gameplay. Hiding, escaping and running away. (I'm not a coward, thanks!) (I hate it because I suck at it)

Third, the story is suboptimal I would give it a 5, just ignore it, you play this to escape from an alien not to read every terminal, note and dialogue because I've done it and found nothing specially impressive about it, just your average lazy writers.

Last thing, is that the way your save your game is ABSOLUTELY unnecessary, which makes this game even more difficult and frustrating. Plus Horror games have essentially no value, gameplay is boring, story is average at best, mechanics are awful, graphics are ok to me. Thank god it was in the game pass.

They incorporate the need to sneak away and hide very very well. There was a similar aspect to the game The Evil Within but in that game it was wholly unnecessary except for one level. Alienn Isolation, on the other hand, creates awesome tension and great moments of being scared very much like watching a good horror movie. You will be on the edge of your seat i almost every scene/ chapter. However, the game doesn't have a very solid story line throughout and what little substance there is of a story is protracted through a very long game with "additional tasks" added on on the very moment you complete a task. So, my biggest problem with the game is that the main character you play has to solve a single problem in the chapter and when you as the player reach that goal the chapter is stretched out by additional tasks that are contrived to create more game play. so for example if my task is to get a medical kit to bring back to someone its not that I just get through the obstacles and the enemies to get the medical kit and return but that once i get it there I will be presented with one more problem that will turn out to be 10 more problems with getting back to complete the overall goal. This is annoying because when you feel like you are going to reach a point of accomplishment and satisfaction the game is contrived to stretch it out and give you more to do. This wouldn't be a problem if it only happened a couple of times. However, The game uses this design of taking every single task you are presented within the story and fixing some broken computer or powered down generator to get to yet another contrived problem. This is a clear sign that they didn't have much of a story to work with so they tried to take a very simple premise of getting from point A to point B and back to A and stretch it out by making you go to additional points A.1 through A.9 before you even get to point B. Its frustrating because the game is fun otherwise and scary but i wanted a better more thought out story to support the illusion of being in this world and being this character. the game could have been very very short with this story they wrote for it and it felt like they needed it to be longer so they just made every thing you work with turn out to be broken. The other problem I had was one that I'm sure pertains to most 1st person shooter games. when you want to turn your head top look around you seem to move in slow motion. This does't reflect anything IRL at all. If I hear a sound IRL I can look to my left in a fraction of a fraction of a second. So That means in this FPS game you end up dying because the game mechanics are sluggish. Another really irritating part of the game is the confusing design of the ship and the maps... Even after you have the maps and have been through several levels you can be totally lost as to where you are in relation to where you need to go. There's a function that allows for you to see your goal on a map but since you dont know what floor you are on in relation to the goal you can end up lost trying to figure out how to go down or up on the ship. I spent several hours walking around in circles trying to figure out how to get off a level or two and this was not fun. getting lost for an hour is a waste of time that could have been avoided if the maps built to show you the full layout of the ship had clear indications of levels through a vertical standing map as opposed to an overhead view only. I hated this aspect of the game. Lastly, the logic that the Alien's senses are more acute and can find u better than humans can is false. I can be hiding behind a block and the humans instantly address me and shoot at me but the alien is clueless unless hes looking right at me. It does come runnning for sounds and if your anywhere in sight when he hears you then you are dead but other than that its a false premise in the game advice. But I was fine with it once I figured that out. This game is still not up there at the level of The Last Of Us or Tomb Raider reboot but its pretty dam good overall. I just wish the story was better written. Expand

The good: There is the right feel of loneliness at times, the constant stress of being hunted, sometimes the intrigue of exploration. Ripley works well as a character, most others do too. The Alien itself is very interesting for a long time (until you learn how it thinks, even though it also learns how you think sometimes) and it's nice that you really get to explore the space station. The visuals are terrific with all the old school, Alien style tech and industrial feel of everything. That carries the game a long way. The story, the background, all of that is excellent.

This game could well have been a clear ten if not for a very few things:
Only two things wrong, really. One is that the game is a bit too linear. You lack the tool for door x, you know you'll come back to door x once you get that tool. Sometimes you can explore other areas and you'll be rewarded with loot (important for survival) but most of the time you follow a path. Sometimes takes a bit out of the exploration. Two is that the game over-extends slightly near the end. It should have stopped a bit before it does. One or two too many twists and turns and in the end you just want to get it over with which is a shame but doesn't severely damage the overall impression of having played an excellent game.

I feel that some areas, especially near the beginning, are somewhat "cheaply claustrophobic" and can be frustratingly difficult to pass, even by sneaking, because there's barely any room to outmaneuver the Alien, but that's just me. There are a few instances when the game runs less than admirable, some lag, weird artifacts, though that just might be an issue of my laptop's technical prowess. I've also had some weird script issues, like an objective not activating properly, and some other stuff i can't remember atm. You should try it, if you can, before you decide on buying it. Not because of what it is, or how it plays, but because it's obviously not for everyone.

Me, I recommend it wholeheartedly. It's awesome.

This game is brilliant. It's the first game about Ridley Scott's xenomorphs that's actually been a horror survival game. In my opinion, it makes the Alien a bit too powerful, but overall it nails the vibe and the experience of the movie. It you enjoyed the movies you need to play this. This is the movie experience, in a game, purified.

The game was absolutely amazing. I was terrified but I kept going back for more. This is one of those games that I will never forget. When the alien is running at you and you know you're going to die it feels so real. So many times I kinda curled up in a little ball as it was coming to kill me. I would recommend this game to everyone. I cant say anything bad about it.

The Alien is terrifying. Remember that dream where you’re being chased by a monster, and he finds you no matter where you hide? This game captures that fear. Hearing the Alien's distant footsteps getting louder makes your heart race. Seeing the Alien drop down out of ceiling vents scares the crap out of you.

    - Interesting and engaging story

E' fatto tutto benissimo, dai comandi all'Alieno. Expand

I have never been as immersed in a game as in this one. There aren't many real flaws I can think of, and I didn't really have any real problems with the save-stations that a lot of the negativity seems to come back to. Sure, there were times that I lost quite some progress, but then you realize that you hadn't really gotten that far anyway, you had just been hiding in a locker for ten minutes, being too scared to even move, and now when you know where to go, things go a lot smoother. Besides, the longer you go without a save-station, the more you want to keep alive, making the game even more stressful and thrilling. I never felt the game was unfair at any point. I have always liked the Alien-movies (especially the first two of course), but this game sparked my interest and love for the franchise.

The only reason the game doesn't get a 10 from me is that some parts of the game has too many backtrack-moments. Not necessarily that you end up visiting places several times throughout the game, but more to the fact that there constantly is something you have to fix to continue progressing. Having to go back towards the start of the level, just to start some generator, then go back again, and so forth, can be a bit frustrating. I also wish there were more friendly (or non-hostile at least) humans on-board the station. Towards the end of the game, you also end up in a bit too many situations that feel very scripted and "video-game-typical"-like, dodging trains, falling elevators, aliens and facehuggers, while everything is burning and so forth. I know this is the climax of the game, but it could have been a bit more subtle, and as it is now it's on the edge of being over the top.

All in all though, this game is amazing, and gives you a fantastic experience. You won't have fun all the time, but chances are you will constantly be scared (absolutely terrified at some points even). I was at least. If you claim you weren't, you are probably playing it wrong or in the wrong setting :>

But the atmosphere in the game is great, and helped bringing the universe from the Alien franchise alive.

The sound and music are awesome too, but the voice acting is more of a hit-and-miss. Some characters have neat voice acting. Others don't, and, combined with the robotic animations, this kind of breaks the immersion. Happily, this is the only bad point.

I really liked the gameplay. I found it really challenging, and I like to be remembered that I would be dead in a horror story if I was there for real. And it is really hard to outsmart the Alien. Unfortunately, the human AI and the robots were so much damn stupid.

The story is nice too. If you really like the franchise, it may seem obvious at some points, and it is nothing amazing, but it is interesting, and kept me waiting to see what would unravel next.

Some people may also find this game a bit long, and, to a certain degree, I have to agree wih them. But the overall experience was one of the best I had in 2014 -and I think this might be my personal game of the year.

It all feels very Alien, and that's what's so amazing about it.
The Ambient Score is Fantastic, Changing constantly depending on the situation you find yourself in. It really adds to the immersion, because when things get tense, and the music starts to rise, you're going to wanna think of a plan. The Alien itself is incredible, whenever its on the prowl, the clock is just slowly ticking away because you know, it's only a matter of time before he finds you. The Working Joes can be just as scary at times, coming at you like a terminator as you count you're bullets to decide whether you can take it on face to face or find a good hiding place and wait for them to give up searching for you. As an Alien fan, i think the overall story is a little lackluster. It starts off with an amazing opening sequenc, begging you into the world of Alien, then starts to fall a bit flat considering the supporting characters are just bland and instantly forgettable. The Protagonist However, Amanda Ripley, fits perfectly into the Alien Universe, and you want to know more about her. You feel for her on her journey to figure out what happened to her mother, and it's amazing to see What happened to Amanda Ripley in-between Alien & Aliens. Alien: Isolation is yet again a great example, of a stellar Survival-Horror Experience.

Graphics: From a technical stand point the graphics are good. But what I appreciate as a PC gamer is that considering the quality of the graphics I suffered very few issues with frame rate. So in terms of graphics you have very nice graphics with high frame rates on a less than midline system. 8/10

Gameplay: This is a survival Horror game and seriously plays like it. The aiming was a little off but better than a LOT of similar games I've played and the controls were responsive. The little 'mini-games' for the various unlocking tools were a nice addition those they did eventually become tiresome. But overall a strong showing with the responsiveness. 8/10

Story: This is where the game shines. Some people prefer the movie Aliens to the original. I am not one of them. And this game really help with the feel of the first game to me. The additional stories other than just the main campaign are also well written. I think one of the things I appreciate most is that the character of Ellen Ripley is a strong female character that does not fight the usual stereotype. She is an engineer (when in the real work only 10% of engineers are women). The game does not rely on making her a sexual object. And the terrot and atmosphere the game presents is strong. 9/10

Overall Average of the scores would be 8.3. I try to be objective but I do have a love for this genre so it will be a little biased in this review and round up instead of down to 9/10.

I have to first mention just how beautifully Isolation replicates the atmosphere of Ridley Scott's original movie. In the world of Isolation, outer space is both majestic in its scope and terrifying in its desolation. It can inspire awe just as easily as it can humble with its bleakness. The visuals are equally incredible in their neutrality inside the ship. It may sound strange to describe something as "incredibly neutral," but that's what it is. It does a superb job of making you feel alone, strung out on the edge of the galaxy, playing your own little narrative where the end result is of little consequence to anyone bar yourself. Soft, claustrophobic gangways, punctuated by cryptic, incessantly blinking lights are common. The sound quality is also superb. Swishes, bleeps and muted "thumps" of footsteps contrast with insulated rattles from the ducts overhead. Finally, there's the Alien itself. From the moment the Alien first appears, you understand it to be an apex predator. Sleek, powerful and utterly terrifying, no other enemy in the game commands as much respect. The animations are sublime.

Then there is the Alien cat-and-mouse game. I have to admit, that had I reviewed the game within the first couple of hours of the Alien appearing, I probably would have given it a far lower score. The reason for this is because it was just so damn hard! Unlike other games, the Alien has a "personality." It wont patrol a set path, or play to a rule book, but instead hunts in an autonomous manner. This means progress can, at first, be painfully slow, because most players (myself included) of most stealth games are used to watching, waiting, then cracking an enemy's patrol system, before walking through the level in one, uninterrupted move. Very quickly however you will come to realise that the game has changed, and this makes it all the more frightening. People fear most what they can't understand, so not having a patrol system to "get" was very unsettling for me to begin with. Prepare to spend a good amount of time hiding in a locker in an empty room during your first encounter, wondering whether it's safe to leave, then edging to the doorway after ten minutes alone only to miss the Alien by an arm's length as it glides past looking the other way. Conventions are consistently challenged, and they are challenged at random. Think you're safe hiding under that desk? Feeling cosy enough in that air duct to tear open a flare? Give it a try and see what happens. There wont come a level where you're introduced to a new tool in the Alien's bag, as happens in most games, it will just happen...and when it does, you'd better think fast to survive.

Over time, however, your relationship with the Alien develops. You'll become more attuned to the sounds of the ship - not because you're told, or you read it somewhere, but because that's what people do when they're in a survival situation. You'll be able to recognise when the Alien is on your floor, above or below you. You'll hide in the shadows and watch it tear apart other survivors. You'll get used to it shadowing your every move and, most of the time, know where it wants to go. And just as you learn from the Alien, the Alien will learn from you. It will learn your tricks, and punish you if you patronise it in the same so many other enemies are patronised in stealth games.

This game is a survival simulation, and I would describe it as an "experience." It's more than just a game. I would absolutely love to play some kind of zombie survival game that takes its cues from Isolation.

The gameplay can become repetitive and at times even frustrating as you progress beyond the 12th mission with no end in sight. Playing on hard the alien is merciless which resulted in having to replay sections of the game, but its downfalls are mitigated by its success at creating a tensive and atmospheric environment. If nothing else, you know a game is good when IGN and GameSpot, et al. score it poorly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alien Isolation is the alien game we've all been waiting for. It perfectly captures the atmosphere of "Alien" made by Ridley Scott in 1979. It literally feels like I am interacting with the movie. The first thing to praise the game about is its story. Amanda Ripley is approached by a man named Christopher Samuels, who invites Amanda Ripley on an expedition to look for the Nostromo's flight recorder which might hold the key to finding her mother, Ellen Ripley. If you've seen the Alien movies then you will know that she tried to kill the Alien by blowing up the Nostromo and sending herself out into space on a tiny shuttle where she undergoes hyper-sleep. So this game takes place in between the events of "Alien" and the events of "Aliens" which is a very cool idea. So, of course, Amanda Ripley accepts Samuels offer and we find her waking up from hyper-sleep and we get to explore the Torrens spacecraft. If I had to summarize the rest of the game it would be, traveling to Sevastopol Station (the holder of the Nostromo's flight recorder), meeting a few characters, fighting loads of androids, and fighting other humans all while trying to avoid the Alien that is aboard the ship. It never really explains how the Alien got there but that is up to your interpretation. Now you may be wondering why I am not giving this a 10. It is because the Alien sometimes has broken A.I. For the most part the Alien's A.I. is great and terrifyingly clever, but 25% of the time he bugs out and either just stands in front of you doing nothing, or running the complete opposite direction from your character which is very eminent in the survival mode. But, overall, Alien: Isolation is a fantastic game that definitely takes advantage of its beautiful graphics. I'm even thinking about getting it on Xbox One, so that says something! 9/10 (Awesome) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Scary, for sure. Atmospheric, indeed. You're on what looks like the Nostromo from the outside, only this time, it's a space station. Even on the Torrens, the atmosphere is thick, and you'll find yourself looking up into the vents just to be sure that our 'friend' isn't hiding up there. Once on board the Sevastapol, you're immediately thrust into the unsure position of 'where is it hiding, and when will it attack me'. I have not yet met the Alien, aside from a cut scene video where you see a companion slain, and even then you only see it's tail as it is thrust through your comanpions torso, but I am playing at the novice level. I have heard it's telltale signs of being near, such as the music and some vent noises, and I was quick to hide or remain silent when that happened. It's quite the tense experience, and I'm taking my time, because I don't feel that this experience is something I need to rush. I also don't want to have a heart attack! I don't much care fro the save system, as you have no choices of save games, and the inventory system leaves much to be desired, so I took away two stars for those inadequacies. Other than that, it's a fine suspense experience, and you will likely be terrified at the prospect of meeting your demise at the 'hands' of the Alien. Expand

Really immersive/atmospheric, true to the films, great graphics and challenging/long gameplay. What more can a Alien fan/gamer ask for?
I recommend playing it after watching the first two movies.

The game is complete, but sometimes you get the feeling that you missed a save point somewhere and have to do a whole lot of backtracking again. but that also gives you the opportunity to do stuff in a different way.

Like a movie and gonna give you very good old times with good graphics if you watched the alien movies. You will feel like you are in the movie because game design and the story force you to feel like it there is no other way we must thanks for the Sega for publishing a great game like this thumbs up for this game.

It's quite a scary game. You are constantly terrified when you are playing this.

This game makes you crawl like a goddamn worm, in constant fear of being squashed. I was scared to leave the closet I was hiding in, because the monster was somewhere out there. [Dec 2014, p.68]

The Creative Assembly’s game, however, is cooked; left to boil so long it loses all flavor and texture. For 10 hours, Isolation is one of the best horror games ever made, until a second, poorly made game bursts out of its heart.

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
