This is not just how an Alien game should be made, this is how a horror game should be made. I've never been so at the edge of my seat while playing a horror game since FEAR, and that is saying a lot

    This game is a disaster.

Blank graphics, stupid stealth and idiotic mini-games (wait until you'll get to an observatory. Or better ditch the game before). Pros: it's a game in Alien universe. Cons: Everything else. Seriously, we had a space horror game before. It was called Dead Space. If this game (Alien: Isolation) was released 10 years ago, it probably will be a world hit.

    Nowadays? Meh.

Just one experience from the start of the game: I was able to sneak out from hospital from alien walking around in corridor. I've crawled to the door being few meters from alien, opened the door, shut behind me, walked two steps... and saw the same alien again. What's the frigging point of my stealthy crawling?

A few times alien did saw me, like it turned right to me when my head was sticking in plain sight in open space... and nothing happened, it went to do it's chores of cleaning dirty air ducts.

Second major disappointment - designers avoided placing mirrors across all the game. However you'll have about three times where you're about to put up the space suit and player got the helm with reflective surface in her hands... Guess what? You ain't reflected there, it's like you're a vampire walking around.

And for the top comment "Visually beautiful, creates a sense of actually being in the Nostromo"...
Guys, really? This game is not about being in Nostromo. During the course of the game you'll _never_ be in Nostromo. Did you ever play the game?

Good thing main station was named a Sevastopol. It's kinda symbolic, using name of site of major disasters, where russians had to sink their own fleet.

Overall experience - you've managed to waste an extraordinary potential. Good luck with that.

Good graphics, good sound and music and a very nice theme, aliens movie.

The gameplay is nearly perfect, the only problem to me, too hard.

I remove one point for some problems with the save system, also said glitch and some other bugs and weird stuff that I can't talk here because it's a spoiler. Also, it look like a dumb port, the menu suck.

Truely a faithful recreation of the Aliens Universe. This isn't trying to be a shooter, this is about survival, evading the alien, and the occasional working Joes and other humans as well. Some people might be expecting an action shooter when even when it was announced they clearly stated its a survival horror game and not a shooter. So please don't down rate the game simply because it's not Call of Duty. I'm glad Creative did a fantastic job with the game. This is defiantly not Aliens Colonial Marines. Play it on hard difficulty, thats how its meant to be. The visuals, while not on the technical level of Crysis 3 or Metro Redux, are really beautiful, creating a fantastic atmosphere.

About the mixed reviews I can only say that I take it the negative reviews are people that were trying to rush through it and couldn't deal with the unpredictable AI or simply the fact this is not a generic CoD shooter game. For fans of the Alien movies or suspense horror games this a 10/10 and absolute must-have.

Isolation, graphically impressive and that is it. You will run down empty corridors, sometimes with a few enemies, sometimes with nothing, collecting crafting items for new gadgets to fend off enemies, yet these gadgets do not need to be crafted as the A.I. is bad. That "unpredictable" Alien A.I.? It's very predictable, I played on Hard and stood right in front of it, it didn't register, in fact the only time it did register is when it found another A.I. or I had to shoot it.

The level designs are just loops of circles that are confusing, to make it worse you have the most obscure way point system there is. Speaking of systems the save system is something that died back in the late 90's. You must manually save (no problem there,) at checkpoints (problem there.) There are 18 chapters, each chapter takes over an hour to complete, that is over double the length then the average game, something people would not speak out about, but when you get this linear and this boring there's a limit.

The story can be covered in one sentence and the play time is horrendous, 12 - 20+ hours of running down the same hallway to open doors. By hour 6 I was so bored I was done, I could not take a single second more. There is nothing to drive the player forwards. What's the point of going to open a door that you know is not only locked, but you'll have to turn on the power and restart the terminal as well.

I think I know why this rated so high, and that's because Metacritic DELETES REVIEWS! Yes this is the SECOND time I've had to rewrite a review because of silencing, here's hoping they will leave this one up because God forbid someone doesn't like a game.

The story is utterly compelling primarily being based off the original Alien but also taking cues from Aliens, Alien 3 and the more recent Prometheus. You genuinely feel like you have entered this universe, which is a testtment to the writer Dan Abnett.

The gameplay is ferociously difficult (I'll be honest, I had to switch down from Medium to Easy), but you do become better as you play. It is also varied, you will go through some utterly spine chilling moments against the alien, but then are giving space to breathe with some pauses with humans or simply puzzles to resolve. At its best this game is the scariest thing I've ever played.

Before buying I was nervous from the negative IGN review about level re-use and backtracking, but this is a complete red herring. You do re-visit some areas but the environment has changed and you can access different areas. How this can be seen as a negative is utterly beyond me. The levels you play are all incredibly rich and varied, not once did I feel fed up of returning to an area. Even in classics such as System Shock 2 it was sometimes tedious to go back, not here.

Visually its spectacular and performed well on my Radeon 7850 at ultra settings. It is hard to explain without actually playing it how effectlvely they capture the Alien universe. For me this has raised the visual standard for other games. The lighting is particularly impressive.

Alien fans will usually look back to AvP1 and AvP2 on the PC as being the high water mark for games, this is finally a worthy successor to these games.

Alien Isolation is the Alien game we have always wanted but never received. Completely removing the typical FPS "Guns Blazing" style and instead going with the full stealth game play is just what this genre needed. Beautiful environments mixed with tension building music and scary enemies created the perfect atmosphere. Definitely worth the purchase.

The bad: can be a bit difficult (although you shouldn't feel shame in playing on easy if needed). Can be a bit stressful (I couldn't play Amnesia because of this, but I can this game). There is no hand-holding, you have a map with markers, but a lot of times you have to think to find your way (it's intentional and well done though). Cinematics are sometimes a bit lacking in the visual department. Character animations are not the best.

However I was only able to get 4 or 5 chapters in before I was annoyed into quitting. The game had devolved into one long stealth mission. Which can be good when done right, I loved the Thief and Hitman franchises and the accomplishment of working through your surroundings to accomplish your goals. But in Alien there really wasn't much to DO other than creep from one side of the room to the other to go to the next macguffin. By the time I quit, the opponents were cyborgs and the namesake Alien.

Cyborgs are slow and slow-witted, more an annoyance than a proper enemy. I spent a lot of time sneaking past them, but realized it's just more effective to run past them and get to your objective. They have very uneven levels of intelligence, sometimes you can duck under an open table and they can't find you sitting right in front of them, sometimes you can hide inside of a closet after losing them around several turns and they just b-line straight to your closet, open it up then beat you. Just... so annoying and dumb. So maybe I'll try and take one out? Oh, I unloaded all six shots of this revolver into your face and it didn't matter? That's great. Why do they even give you the pretence of holding a weapon?

Then there's the Alien. Once he joins in, the never-ending stealth mission now has frequent random losses where he appears from nothing and stabs you for instant death. So you end up creeping along very slowly to make less noise which helps a small amount, except now you're moving so slowly he'll just wander over you and kill you because apparently he wants to kill you more than everyone else combined. So it's a slower, more boring death that takes way more time to get to. Despite the hugeness of the station there's never a moment where this #*(@ is more than a room or two away from you. Why is he camping my character specifically? How is he able to always be around me even if he can't find me while sitting under a desk the same room? Do I have some sort of Ripley connection to the monster that makes him so much more interested in me than everyone else? What was I supposed to know to avoid these obnoxious instant lose surprises? Why do all doors open automatically if you're on their half of the room, announcing to the Alien that here you are, please kill me now? How is any of this avoided? How long does it take for him to leave a room when you're hiding in a locker? 5 minutes? 10? He just endlessly keeps pacing back and forth in front of you, prolonging this failed attempt.... ugh.

So between dumb, slow and pointless or dumb, fast, magnetically attracted to your location and instantly game ending, the enemies are not satisfying to work against. Tension gives way to frustration which gives way to annoyance. Plus the game ONLY saves when you specifically go to a save terminal. You will have all your progress rewound to the previous zone if they don't give you a save point in a sensible location before your next alien one shot death. If I had to describe this game in one word, it would be "annoying". Lots of potential, lots of atmosphere, but the game just isn't fun or satisfying to play.

Most of the story, just like many first-person games, is told by Amanda Ripley's eyes, save for some cutscenes. As the game progresses, you get involved in the mysteries concerning the Sevastopol, its crew and survivors, and Amanda's mother fate. You get anxious and nervous every time you see the alien, but the fear easily goes away once you get the flamethrower. You're going to want to finish the game fast, since there are many long and tedious objectives, but you'll also get nervous and exhilarated when the alien shows up and when other climax scenes occur. The story also serves as an entree to newcomers, and also a reminder for enthusiasts to watch the movies.

Following horror games should follow Alien's example and create an involving atmosphere and a sense of anticipation. The Creative Assembly managed to redeem the franchise in video games and also serves as an example for other games. Alien: Isolation was definitely the biggest surprise of 2014 and will always be an unforgettable experience.

I would also like to comment on the heavily compressed, 30fps pre-recorded cut scenes, they are just horrible and laggy, whereas the main gameplay was super smooth at 60fps without a single drop on max settings, this is a common problem with console ports and cut scenes unfortunately.

The voice work, story and visuals were all good but the gameplay was just slow and boring and dragged on, plus there was one very length section that was frankly terrible, after Google'ng the area it's considered by most just an awful experience (not because it's hard, it's just long and dull), it was at this point I almost quit the game entirely. I will also applaud the overall atmosphere as it was good and very scary at times.

There are also a few mods available if you feel like changing some of the rules. One of them makes the alien completely ignore you, so you can venture around and explore. There is also a mod for unlimited pistol ammo, which is a lot of fun because shooting a gun attracts the alien.

The game loses 1 or 2 points because it crashes often. This happens to a lot of people, and nobody seems to know why it crashes. My computer is not overclocked, all of my drivers are up to date, and this is the only game I have a problem with. This can be enraging because I just spent about 20 minutes wandering around in some unskippable story bullcrap, and then the game crashed right at the end. By doing this the player's attention span and edginess lowers quite a bit, almost to the point of feeling empowered. This is where the brilliance shines, because just at the moment where you start feeling safe and strong, the game just tears you a new hole, and you can't even be mad about it, because you just blew your old one... If you like the atmosphere of the original film, don't mind investing a lot of time in a game, and dealing with some slow parts in the game, GO AND GET THIS GAME, it is awesome! And people talking about the Alien A.I. being unfair? I call hogwash! I finished the entire game without dying ONCE (my third playthrough) And no, you can't just learn the Alien's patterns, because it doesn't have any scripted patterns, it reacts to YOUR behaviour. AWESOME GAME 10/10!

    This is it.
The game that all Alien fans needed. ( Not IGN )
In my opinion its like a mix of BioShock with Amnesia.
The length of the game is also very good, the stealth and controls are very fluid.
The best is probably the sound. Its very well done and it really brings that Alien felling.
Its the best alien game of the modern era.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am very pleased and thrilled by this game. I am of older Age but still active enough, to get Adrenalin sometimes....The very high challenge, the hairraising Tension and last b.n. least the athmosphere in Alien Isolation provide much of it.
There are some Points which disappoint me: As a beginner, I started the game in medium difficulty and have reached the middle of Mission 6 so far. I must say, the critics concerning the very problematic "save" issue are true: What the h*** playing for 45 minutes or more and to be just wiped out at the end of the Level? The developers could have arranged a save System, which gives a tiny bit more of flexibility. The hardcore, nearly sadistic absolute "survive or die"-System is just frustrating and adds nothing to suspense.
Many other critics have mentioned this fact. This is a GAME (fun), not a test to withstand torture....!
Humans, who are hostile towards me, can freely wander around, Play with their Revolvers and survive!
Only with MY initiative and risk, the "Alien" decides to punish them....? This is not right!
With the rest of the game, I am very satisfied.

Everything feels so real, the many many details and awesome views trough the station windows. It is a perfect mix between stealth, puzzles and action gameplay. You always have a goal and it's never getting boring. You really feel like beeing a part of the good old movies!

And be prepared, the encounters you will face are tough bastards and they have surprised me many times. But thats the challenge and i love it. Between the thrilling parts you have time to scavenge the station and looking for supplies, before you go back to your mission.

I normaly don't rate a 10/10, but this game deserves it! I enjoyed every second of it.

    Cons
-Game can be frustrating, enemies might block a door and decide to just not leave, Alien might find you despite you not really doing anything to really put yourself in that situation, just because of bad luck. Another example is sometimes the Alien is magic and literally in two different spots at once, like you see him drooling and look at another vent and he is drooling from that one too, and if you go under either he spawns there and kills you.
-AI sometimes will be a derp. Usually it's really good, and if it hears you or such it will come running, it cuts you off, etc, but every once in a while it will just like look directly at you 3 feet away and just miss you. This is rare, but it really breaks immersion when the AI does things like this.
-Lack of features to take advantage of next gen hardware/PCs, while it looks great as is, it pretty much looks the exact same across everything.

Issues I hear but so far don't agree with
-Save points? I was heard they were terrible, they are actaully really good, not too numerous and not too rare. If you pay attention you rarely lose much if any progress. They skip save points and complain when they get set back.
-Tedious gameplay due to it being stretched out?.The game actually seems to be the perfect length, it has not gotten tedious to me and I am more than half way through now. Plus I can do the short missions and DLC afterwards which is a perfect length.

    8/10
Understanding the Alien universe is a big help in enjoying this game, but it achieves what it aims to do fairly well. I am happy with my purchase.

The quests seem repetitive and I'm tired of pulling levers and pushing buttons at this point. Sneaking was fun for a while but by the end I've gotten impatient and just don't care anymore. The only thing making me want to sneak isn't for fear of getting caught but just to finish the game in a timely manner. I'm nearly done and at this point I'm just beating it to see the end.

Its good that things works, controls feel nice and haven't really given me trouble. But the story and puzzles make me feel like I'm child, doesn't feel catered toward an older audience despite the graphics and gore. Puzzles are simple timed reflex, match numbers/symbols or align and time. Instead of feeling rewarded for completing them I just feel insulted. They could have had more urgent circumstances to make you feel pressured while doing them but I'm playing on hard and its all too easy. I can't image how much of a walk in park anything below hard must be. Also I see tons of intractable debris like soda cans, gas tanks that fall over and make noise but none of those objects seem to attract or alert enemies. The only thing I think will alert sometimes is the broken glass but I'm still not sure.

Crafting seems a bit odd. Like why do I have to select the individual components? Why can't I just click the make button? Do they want it to be a bit time consuming, is it suppose to make the game harder for me? It doesn't do any of those things so why not just let me click craft. Its annoying having to select each part for no apparent reason. They could have at least made crafting items be alertable so that I'd have to think twice when doing it, maybe add an animation to show me making it. But since it doesn't do any of those things they should have just let be a single button click to make an item.

Ever heard a weird swishing noise when moving around? We'll I'm still not sure what it is but my guess is its the flamethrower. Sometimes it will make it and sometimes it won't. I thought it was dependent on the amount of fluid(ammo) you had for it but that remains inconclusive since even with half a tank it may or may not make the swishing noise. I also thought that that noise would be alterable but it isn't... They could have had it so that when I have it equipped it makes the noise and I'm more easily detected but when I don't it doesn't however it just another useless element.

Then there is the story/plot. Its an alien game so I know its been milked pretty hard by this point and it goes back to the classic moments but despite this the plot is terrible IMO. There are so many repetitive and reused elements its like they didn't put any thought into it. Like Power out there, turn it on, establish coms, didn't work, go turn on power over there instead. Or lets turn AI off, crap no good save me by turning off some power now but this time with a twist, do it in a particular order! lord...

Then there were the space walk simulation parts of the game that just felt like a huge waste of time. I wanted to run to make it go by quicker but I had to sit there holding down the w key waiting for her ass to walk to the objective which guess what.. involved turning on more power and matching more numbers...

Horrible disappointment. I though this game is about survival against the Alien but unfortunately it is about sneaking past the room full of armed humans that can kill you in a second. And even if after half hour of trying you manage to sneak up to one of them and knock him down, you can't even pick up his gun (duh), and guess what, the others kill you 3 seconds later.

I dont really get the hype over this one. Am I too 'old' to appreciate this game? Why am I not scared or startled like everyone else seems to be? I suppose I must be on camera to play it up and ACT scared? I feel its all a rather boring and repetitive death after death slog fest just in hope of reaching the next very distant checkpoint. Is the flamethrower effective? Once in a while, but not often as most of the time the alien ignores it and kills you anyway regardless of draining a tank on its hide. I cant even be bothered to pick up any items as once you die you must tread down tht esame corridors etc etc and rummage around all over and over and over again again to pick up the same crap...and did i mention you die again....and again....and again? The deaths, and hundreds of them, can seem so random and quite unwarranted which I find beyond annoying. Its so damned tiresome to repeat the same scenario over and over again due to lengthy checkpoints, to the point where I just dont give a sh!t about playing any longer. This annoyance ruins any sense of possible fun and furthermore, killing any desire to want to persevere through the endless deaths bullsh!t. All in all plodding through this game gets REALLY old REAL fast.
It's a nice EFFORT and deviation from the run and gun style one would expect from this theme but for the love of god make the next one with some marines and battle rifles. I hope this 100% locker simulator style nonsense is just a passing fad.

This has to be one of the most pleasant surprises in gaming in the past few years. I'll start by saying I'm NOT a fan of horror games. But I truly enjoyed this game.

    The positives:

    1. The Engine. Nobody seems to mention this. The engine is amazing, I don't know what it is, but the graphics are amazing while maxed with high FPS on my 680. Compared to Shadow of Mordor that just came out, which looks noticeably worse but with a bad FPS. Alien: Isolation has excellent graphics AND an excellent engine.

    2. The gameplay. This is a STEALTH GAME. If that turns you off, then you won't enjoy Alien: Isolation. The character is NOT a gung ho violent person. It says it a million times in loading screen tips. You aren't meant to be violent, and are actively punished for it. This is reflected in the fact it takes her ages to aim the revolver, and still has crap aim with it after you let it aim. There are also consequences I won't mention for firing your weapons. They're best viewed as tools, but only equally useful as your other tools. The entire game plays sort of like a Deus Ex Human Revolution stealth sequence, but with huge penalties for getting caught. If that doesn't sound appealing, then this game isn't your cup of tea.

    3. The Atmosphere. Holy. Crap. The lighting, the props, the sound, the pacing, all come together to create an adrenaline pumping experience that'll leave you feeling energized, if you let yourself become immersed. This game is meant to be played in long sessions without distractions. When you get through a particularly harrowing sequence, the relief and satisfaction is real. The props themselves deserve huge amounts of credit. You can tell that the artists worked relentlessly to bring us Alien as it was originally imagined. Each prop oozes with style, and you can tell they're all labors of love. The textures are so perfect, it feels like you can reach out and touch the cheap 70s era yellow stained plastic. The computer/device monitors you encounter are all a joy to look at and interact with. And the sound. With Jeff Van Dyk on board it's to be expected, but this game has some of the best music and sound design I've heard in a long time. Major props to those guys. There are so many OH **** moments that occur, and when in retrospect you realize they weren't even scripted, you go OH **** again. Unlike other horror games with scripted events around every corner, many of the things that make you jump or terrified are NOT scripted and are completely organic. Whoever was behind the design in this game deserves a medal. It's a true cinematic experience. This is innovation, folks. We can only hope other games copy this dynamic style of storytelling.

    4. It's HARD! Which is refreshing considering most games today hold your hand. You're going to die a lot in this game. Sometimes it feels cheap when you die, but with patience I was able to plan out and get through every sequence. Sometimes I got stuck in places due to the objective not being in a clear cut location, but I don't think having to explore is necessarily a con. Like I said, this game does NOT hold your hand. It gives you a few tools you need to survive, and leaves it up to you to figure out how to manipulate and exploit the world and tools. That discovery of all the new ways you can get through places is a true joy.

    Time for the negatives.

    1. Lack of anti aliasing and options. I spent a good half hour setting up the graphics of this game through my videocard. The lack of anti aliasing and field of view beyond 74 is really annoying. In fact, I find it outright ridiculous that the game defaults to 47~ FOV. That's downright unacceptable. When you crank it up to 74 however, it is acceptable. I just wish it went to 90.

    2. Frustrating segments. Like I said, this game is HARD and can get pretty god damn frustrating when you lose your patience. With adrenaline flowing it's sometimes hard to sit back and examine a situation and go through it methodically. I can't really knock the game for this too much though, because I personally enjoy hard games and overcoming obstacles. If you don't like hard, then be weary. Think of it like Dark Souls. It's about that level of unforgiving, except you get a lot more save points.

    3. Voice acting is a but crappy sometimes, but most of the time you don't notice it. The only time it was cringe worthy was around the beginning. I wish they got a better actor for Ripley.

    Conclusion:

If you enjoy hard games, this game is for you. If you are easily immersed in games and love getting sucked into a game world, this is for you. If you enjoy stealth games, this is for you. Especially if you love the Alien franchise.

If you're a gung ho cowadoody player, like that idiot IGN reviewer who gave this a 5.9, and black ops a 9, then this game isn't for you. If you're impatient, or want something light and mindless, then this game isn't for you.

Happy hunting, and damn I hope games of this quality continue to be released

I'm very impressed to say the least. I would recommend everyone watch the Alien movie first, then jump into this game to truly appreciate the experience.

The most important thing to understand about this new entry into the series is it's radical shift in gameplay design from those of which were, by an large, iterations on the same gameplay first experienced Doom. And it was with no surprise that the franchise was going to take this well trodden path as the sequel to the original film in the series was John Carmack's main inspiration in developing Doom.

By diagnosing the main problem with one of videogames most popular genres The Creative Assembly have opted to make the player feel as vulnerable as possible in order to instil a genuine sense of dread and tension throughout the game. The game doesn't allow players to horde backpacks full of guns and ammo but instead forces you to use any meagre gadget you can concoct in order to distract your enemies as opposed to mowing them down with little cost to your resources or safety. There are guns introduced later in the game and surprise surprise here in lies one of the games strange inconsistencies with the Alien cannon and potential flaws in it's gameplay.

After a slow burn introduction to the Sevastopol Station, a crumbling space port in it's last stages of being decommissioned, the game starts out incredibly reminiscent of Bioshock allowing the player to venture in at their own pace discovering computers containing personal logs by Sevastopol inhabitants and audio recordings that help to organically deliver the narrative element of the game. Once further into the Sevastopol and the main elements have been introduced the gameplay really takes off with the Alien and other enemies all working together to create a wonderfully organic emergent gameplay style that is never scripted and always seems unique throughout repeat playthroughs. And repeat playthroughs of invidual missions will become commonplace to even the most seasoned and skilled players as The Creative Assembly have done something truly amazing with the AI of it's titular enemy by designing it to work with heightened sensors that enable it to respond dynamically to sound and situations as opposed to being moved on predetermined paths with basic AI programming. In short this game is **** HARD!

The look and feel of the game is stunning, albeit it with a minimal amount of dodgy cutscenes, poor human facial animations and shader aliasing problems, as the lighting and graphical fidelity convinces you that you are in world of Alien, one of cinemas most stunning and meticulously designed films. The Alien's design and animations are far beyond anything I've seen in any game and it's clear where Sega have really channelled their money opting, with minor cost to less vital parts of the game, to really bring the Alien to life.

However there are some problems with the game, although minimal, and these are down in large part to the second half of this massive game. When I say massive I can tell you it must have taken me over 25 hours to complete the game on Normal difficulty on a very explorative playthrough and once the game reached the 15 hour mark for me, which would have been an ample length for a game of this kind, the Alien "goes on vacation" for the 3rd quarter of the game leaving you pining for it's return. Once the game finds itself without an Alien you are left to contend with the stations second most deadly entity, the Androids, who prove to be somewhat less fulfilling. The game also chooses to ignore some vital elements of the Alien's lifecycle introduced by James Cameron in the second movie which I feel are to it's detriment.

On the whole Alien: Isolation is one of the most tense and claustrophobic horror stealth games I've ever experienced and I heartily recommend to it to any and all that have even the slightest interest in horror and sci-fiction. Well done CA the Alien is finally back in town!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow! I must say that I'd never expect the creators of Total War to make such a masterpiece in such a genre! Alien Isolation is indeed a true Alien game and it completely surpasses its predecessor in every field! The story is extremely loyal to the original Ridley Scott movie, Alien (1979) starring Sigourney Weaver as Amanda Ripley who turns out to be the very last survivor of the Torrens as go farther in the game! Creative Assembly has undoubtedly succeeded in creating a Survival-Survival-Survival-Horror game!!! It's all about survival! It's true survival! You'll find it reasonably difficult to gather ammunitions. Ammunition is pretty limited (I won't say extremely, because it's still enough to get rid of a good number of the bad-ass androids-in-orange which aren't vulnerable to EMPs!). This is not Dead Space! You most probably will prefer to walk under shadows rather than making a mess around! Everyone, Everything in this game has got keen ears! Shoot a bullet and everyone will come to find you! The Alien on the other hand is a totally different hostile! the most intelligent and the toughest enemy you could ever have is the Alien itself! It can get into the vents above you, in the ceiling and surprise you in a very bad time! It's undefeatable! When spotted you won't be able to move farther than a few meters, it'll get you! Whatever it takes, it'll get you! So creeping slowly on the ground is way safer than running quickly from room to room!
Play it! Save it a lot! Enjoy! Hide! It's all survival! It's all survival!

Lighting and shadows are great. Audio, soundtrack & voice casting well done. Unfortunately there are a number of issues that spoil it. First of all as many others have commented on, the game is basically a 10-12hr game that's been artificially padded out to 20-22hrs via a combination of level/mission over re-use and checkpoint save system that adds nothing to gameplay or challenge by forcing you to backtrack or replay large sections over & over and just gets very tedious very quickly. Many objectives you have to do twice, other levels you have to backtrack all the way to the start - when this is done sporadically it works, but when it gets overdone it becomes boring, obvious "filler" and breaks immersion when you look upon the next chapter as a boring chore to be "grinded" rather than a game to be immersed in.

The gun's hit detection vs humans can be iffy, whilst QTE's (Quick Time Events) and "over-scripting" (endless unnecessary micro-cutscenes that "snatch" control away from the player) are another pet hate and this game is replete with them. Almost every single simple action from pulling a lever to removing a door lock involves a "simon says" QTE. Combat often involves button-mashing QTE's. Another point gets deducted for the most ludicrous "penguin in a neck-brace" overdone side-to-side head bob that can't be disabled. It doesn't remotely represent reality of how you see / perceive your own body movement even when sprinting. In real life your neck & eye muscles automatically compensate for most of it, whilst your visual cortex filters out most of the rest (same way you don't consciously notice your own nose even though you're "seeing" it all the time). Your head sure as hell don't snap violently from side to side just from jogging in a straight line.

Overall score is about a 8-9 for the first 20-30 mins but then rapidly drops to a 6-7 when you realize half the game involving backtracking & replaying checkpoints is far more "filler" than plot and done in the most annoying way possible. Multiple other annoyances (no quick-save with checkpoint only saves too far apart, QTE's that are more annoying than immersive, absurd motion sickness inducing head-bob, etc) further reduce it to a 5 for me. I really wanted to give it more but it can be so frustrating & boring to play beyond the first 1-2 hours (and replay... and replay... and replay...). If this were about 5-6 hours shorter in length minus the above annoyances, I'd have probably given it a score of nearer 8-9.

In my opinion a good stealth game needs to have room for improvisation and at least two different ways of clearing an area. But Alien Isolation feels too linear and half of the gadgets you tinker with are useless or very samey. Which means they don't specifically change the style of playing, it's a very one-road approach to gameplay, that's why it gets stale after a few hours. You can't pit enemies at each other, you always have the same two options: evade or confront. A lot of other stealth games had a better way of manipulating your environment, so this game feels very dated in it's limited abilities.

I like that they take time to show the Alien for the first time. But once they do, boy do they use it in the same way over and over. It always has that same upstanding walk which looks sometimes too human and less frightening, there should be more variety or maybe slow wall-crawling. Even the mediocre AVP games had more creativity in that regard. They never do something with the camouflage ability of the Alien, instead they rely on jump-scare tactics and the alien doing it's round like usual. It also mises a vague estimation of how good you're hidden from the Alien, sometimes hiding under a table is good enough, other times it's not.

Another boring aspect is the amount of locked doors and ways to unlock them. Again, it's there to make you feel like this is gameplay, but it's not. It's just tedious obstacles to stretch the game for a few more minutes. I bought the game on Sale, and I don't say I regret paying 9 bucks, since it still looks gorgeous. But I haven't played the DLC's, although I own all of them, but it's the gameplay that kind of makes me say, "okay I do not really need to play this".

There is simple formula. He is usually looking for you 1 minute than you have 10 - 20 seconds to change your place. When you are in one place hidden too long, he will moving and looking close to you and you will have to hold breath. And because controls don't help you, you will be sometimes killed, because pressed key is not registered by game. This "hiding game" is interesting in the begging of the game. But later, when you are send to some place, you know - again some alarm will be triggered and you will have to play again cheap "hiding game".
This is boring and game is missing something else. Some better idea and not only repeating hiding game with unreal alien behavior.
And Im not talking about mechanoids. They are not able to hear you (breath, steps) behind small wall, 2 meters away, while you are watching to his eyes, but mechanoids are able to hear you in locker. How ?
Another black point: keyboard. Why do I have to press and hold key, when I want to hide ? Game is sometimes not able to recognize pressed key. Situation: alien is in your back, you press E and you holding the key 1 sec, 2 sec. Nothing. You press E again and finally after 1 sec, Ripley is hiding. But you lost 3 - 4 seconds and alien is now able to see you. GAME OVER and start again from last save. Why keyboard control is killing the game like this ? Stupid "hold key" rule is making game not more scary, but more unplayable.
This unreal alien, mechanoid, humans behavior, sometimes not working keyboard (bug ?), boring "hiding games" with alien are killing the game.
If keyboard is fixed, alien has better and real moving script, mechanoids and level design is better and there is some story, game deserve 10/10. At this moment, game has good draft, but bad design killed good game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The atmosphere, the movie authenticity, and overall presentation are just incredible. As far as the timeline of the Alien universe is concerned, the game takes place between the first and second Alien movies.

Just the start of the game already sends chills down your spine. Not because of an awesome intro video, or some gory scene, no. It's minimalistic. It's just Ellen Ripley, narrating her last log entry that you will hear at the end of the first Alien movie, "Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo, third officer reporting. The other members of the crew, Kane, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash and Captain Dallas, are dead. Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about six weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off."

This is it for the intro and you're immediately thrown into the midst of th game. You are Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley's daughter, you work for Weyland-Yutani Corp. as well, and your eventual mission is to retrieve the data recorder that contains what you believe to be all that is left of your mother. The data recorder is at Sevastopol station, and you will be headed there.

Obviously things don't go as planned. and you not only have to face down an Alien warrior, but also deal with hostile factions aboard the station that are not happy to see you by any means of the imagination. To begin with, you have nothing. No tools, no items, no materials, and most importantly, nothing to defend yourself with. While you can liken the overall atmosphere, the intense dread and setting to games like "Dead Space", this is far worse, because you literally are vulnerable. No armor, no weapons, and one or two shots from anyone WILL kill you.

Although I haven't really gotten that far yet, I can already tell you that the atmosphere and sounds do have you constantly on edge. This is not a game you want to play when you feel like relaxing.

Performance wise Creative Assembly have done a marvelous job. My rig is definitely not the latest in terms of gaming hardware, and on my QuadCore Q9400 @ 2.66 GHz, 8 GB RAM and GeForce GTX 650 1 GB I could play at 1080p with Ultra settings and still get 30-40 fps. I set the resolution down one notch and a couple of settings are back to "High" instead, and now I'm between 50-60 fps. Perfect. I'm not seeing huge differences in graphics quality with those settings changed and high fps is more important to me in this kind of game. I am definitely impressed with the optimizations and scalability. One of the best examples of great performance optimizations to date!

So, to cut a long story short: If you like the Alien franchise, sci-fi and can handle being on edge for every minute you play this game, then this is for you. I am by no means a survival horror fan, but this a classic. It's part of a franchise that defined science-fiction and molded it into what it is today. It's a testament to pop-culture and it's simply fantastic.

And to all those complaing too much "backtracking", "stealth", and not enough guns; it's not an FPS game. It's survival horror. The game exactly makes you behave the way you would if you were trying to avoid contact with a hostile force while having to get somewhere undetected. Slow and careful! What truly makes this outstanding is that for once fear is not the ONLY enemy. . .

It's a beautifully atmospheric, beautifully detailed, dreadfully horrifying first-person survival horror masterpiece, and the fact that it even exists in an AAA industry that abhors the single-player, story-driven experience in favor of high-octane cinematic set-pieces and intense multi-player, because everything that isn't Call of Duty isn't Call of Duty enough.

After the disaster that was Aliens: Colonial Marines, it seems like the strategy now is to just go back, call do-over and do everything the exact opposite the way Colonial Marines did it. Instead of a big and burly marine mowing down the Xenomorph horde, you're just an engineer, scared and alone, while everything around you is out for your blood, forcing you to hide and find ways of circumventing most of the threats in favor of dealing with them head on.

You play as Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, who has come to the dying space station known as Sevastopol to find key information about her mother and the disappearance of the Nostromo. When she gets there, she finds that she's in a life-or-death situation, trapped on the space station with other violent, angry survivors, and the titular, infamous Xenomorph.

The art design is phenomenal. The "low scifi" look of the original films has been preserved with amazing posterity, filled with CRT monitors and blinking LED lights, and giving every inch of Sevastopol personality and depth. It's a beautiful game, and runs incredibly well, even on the highest graphical settings.

But how does it play? Well, the game itself can be frustratingly difficult, often deaths will occur seemingly out of nowhere and due to no fault of the player. This is a game where you will die a lot, but save points are sparse, so repeating a difficult section will probably take even longer than normal because you have to do everything leading up to it as well. This isn't helped by the otherwise incredibly well-done AI of both the Alien and the humanoid characters, who are very smart and will ambush and outwit you in ways you won't expect. Expect to use crafting recipes often and in creative ways.

But for a genuinely terrifying horror experience? Alien: Isolation delivers, and if you're willing to put up with the slightly frustrating difficulty spikes, then you have an absolute masterpiece, one that Giger himself would be proud of. The Alien himself is spectacular to behold, with the aforementioned well-done A.I., can often be used in creative and unpredictable ways. You can get the attention of a group of pesky humans by using a noisemaker or gunshot, then hiding in a locker while the Xenomorph slaughters everyone, then hold your breath while he searches for you, praying that he doesn't hear you breathing or the blips of your motion tracker. It's an awesomely tense experience, and one that I can't get enough of.

If you're a fan of traditional horror, sci-fi, or the Alien franchise, then this is worth buying at full price, absolutely.

С начало мне показалось, что это очередной фейл, но в конце я убедился в обратном. Просто десять из десяти, достойный носитель франшизы!

First I was killed by the alien. Then some guys shot me. Then some androids choked me to death! I felt fear and anger, the game was too hard even at easy setting. And that's exactly what a good alien game needs - to be challenging and frightening.

I hate the fact that it is first person. It would have made a better game as a 3rd person. It would have been more like Dead Space, which was a fantastic game.

I've been waiting patiently for this particular game to arrive. Much have been said by the developers. Promises was made. It all sounded almost too good to be true. A game with 1 real enemy. A game with no weapons to speak of. How could this work?

Well, first of all: The alien is really, really, REALLY well-made. From the sounds to the animations, to the AI and the unpredictable nature of it. It really does feel like you're facing off against the Alien movie xeno. And that was certainly the most important aspect of this game.

Next comes the challenge of making a game with only one enemy work. And this is done by throwing in some generic humans and some creepy synthetics. The humans are good for one thing: xeno-bait. Throw a noisemaker in their direction and enjoy the show.
At the beginning of the game they are really annoying, mostly because you have no gadgets available yet. But as the game progresses, you have so many opportunities for solving each situation, it becomes really strategic and fun... Oh, and did I mention that it's also scary as hell!!

The alien is introduced in an expertly way. Slowly! And after a few hours into the game, you get to know your enemy. Not in a way that you can predict it, oh no, but in a way that makes you act more strategic around it. You understand its flaws and how it behaves. You'll still get eaten time and time again. But it wouldn't be fun if you didn't.

I need to emphasize that this is a strategy/horror game. Each situation can be solved in a multitude of ways. And it's topped off with the unpredictable nature of the xeno. I really am in love with how they designed the game. Great work CA! You delivered on your promises. The franchise now has a game that lives up to the movie.

Given the randomness of the creature I found myself enjoying a brutal game of hide and seek that was different each time I played. The game engine runs like a dream, even on my older hardware, and looks absolutely great - don't know how they pulled this off. CA really put a lot of love and work into this one and you can feel it. Wasn't sure about this one at first because I'd avoided Colonial Marines and felt lucky for it, but I took a chance after reading a few reviews and it was worth it. Dead Space is another one of my favorites just for the atmosphere, and this game has that same feeling in droves, minus the killing because you really are at the mercy of your own ability to KEEP OUT OF ITS SIGHT! Hands down... The best game of 2014 and one of the best (if not the very best) survival horror game of all times. Amazing visuals, outstanding atmosphere that sets unique mood seen in Ridley Scott's 1979 masterpiece, great sound and addictive gameplay... overall, an extremely well done game.

Alien's appearance and unpredictable AI is a big juicy FVck You to the gaming industry nowadays where most of games (especially FPS) are like identical clones with same brainless AI and same settings.

However, have in mind that Alien Isolation (just like 1979 Alien) is a slow burner. It asks you for patience but rewards you with intense, an amazing gaming experience.

I haven't enjoyed a game so much in many years. With Isolation, I felt like I was on board a space station actually being hunted by an Alien. The settings are so authentic and the script is so immersive. Also the sounds of the ships are all just like in the movies.

Isolation's only flaw if it can be described as such is its length. It if a very long game but I will never hold that

The Alien AI is tough - but a good balance of tough. Many encounters I had to repeat 10-20 times. And then others I just knuckled down and asked myself what would Ripley do. :p This game is not justhide and seek from the Alien. The Droids go beserk too and at times it feels like synthetics have taken over the entire station. But do't worry with the weapons provided the end is achievable. You even get to space walk outside the station. This is a game of the year contender.

This game makes you crawl like a goddamn worm, in constant fear of being squashed. I was scared to leave the closet I was hiding in, because the monster was somewhere out there. [Dec 2014, p.68]

The Creative Assembly’s game, however, is cooked; left to boil so long it loses all flavor and texture. For 10 hours, Isolation is one of the best horror games ever made, until a second, poorly made game bursts out of its heart.

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
