That said, enough freedom is provided to either backtrack or explore once you have obtained the necessary tools to unlock sections already covered. Doing this could be advantageous and recommended.

Various game modes are also provided placing you right in the action should it feel if the story is dragging a bit.

If you're expecting a "Hudson pulse rifle panic spray fest" experience as with colonial marines, this might not be the successor you are looking for.

Why this game deserves a 9: It's a game that's made to be played on hard mode, punishing your every mistake. That being said, they are extremely lenient on crouching. Crouching almost makes you invisible. I had plenty of times where an alien couldn't see me down the hall simply because I was crouched. I had many other times where I could just run around a table in circles and the alien would never find me.

Why people score poor on this game: It's hard. People who get frustrated score poorly. It's a trial and error game. If you want to survive better try laying down some traps to run to in case you mess up. And for all of you complaining that the Alien is too big and walks around...get over it. It's a way better idea in a horror game. Just the sheer heavy terror in the alien's footsteps tells you so many things about the creature you are trying to elude. He's not meant to be messed with.

I did however find the level design and encounter design to be very linear and repetitive. Animation quality isn't great. The small amounts of combat that are in the game feel very poorly put together. The save system can create huge frustrations with infrequent checkpoints placed behind quick time events and story components. This type of game is generally quite short and available for less than full retail, thus with this title coming in at full price it feels extortionately padded out to justify it's price. This in turn reduces the quality of the game considerably and is probably one of it's most noticeable lows with some sections dragging on into an hour or more of walking around. There really isn't any replay value here and the DLC is both short and overpriced.

On the plus side it looks great, highly atmospheric and true to the genres well executed formula.

If you don't already enjoy games like Outlast or Amnesia, you really won't enjoy this one. However if you do enjoy this type of game, Alien Isolation adds a few interesting chemicals into the mix and makes good use of the Alien License. Fortunately too it is a strong PC release with plenty of graphics options, very few bugs and performance is excellent.

This game is one of the best game made based on a movie.
The game has a solid storyline, the game maybe longer a bit than it should be, but I don't mind.
Graphics is one of the best on the market right now, including global illumination.
The quality is also high with the sound engine too, along with the sound effects.
Only two weak points the lip-sync and the actual ending.

Darken the room and put on your headphones, enable surround sound, turn down the game music to 10%, this game delivers great atmosphere and some very tense moments. If you want fast paced action with guns blazing, dont bother.. I found myself low on ammo far from a save point hiding under a table for 10 minutes just waiting for the alien to make a noise so I can continue on. Moving slowly from one table to another, listening to every knock and thump, slowly peering around corners, looking back every few seconds, it can get very tense sometimes. Once you have the flame thrower you can be a bit more careless. A short burst will scare it away.
You really need to strategize your next move in the alien missions. The androids also provide some decent suspense in some areas, but you can easily outrun them.

The missions are well designed, but you do need to track back and forth a fair bit in some missions. Having to search for power generators and power them up all the time can get a bit repetitive, and looking for the exit point and keycards can get a bit tiresome, but it's not too excessive like in some other games (Doom 3 comes to mind).
This game is longer than your average game but I never got bored thanks to the atmosphere, storyline, and the mix of non-alien missions.

Graphics, sound, gameplay are all brilliant, lighting is excellent. However the inventory system and monitor interfaces could be improved. Took me ages to work out how to use a medkit (press Q, hover over medkit, release Q, hold R). Guns don't reload automatically when you run out of bullets so you need to check your ammo at all times.
The maps and direction indicator could be improved, I was totally lost a few times since the direction indicator sometimes disappears and the destination point on the map was on another level.

Negatives aside, the game is very polished and well made. It only crashed once in one of the later levels. Alt-Tab works.
The Alien AI is very well done, probably the best AI I've ever seen in a game. It didn't feel scripted at all. Human and Android AI could probably be improved, but scripted androids was useful when timing sneaks past them.

Easily the best alien game ever, probably the best suspense game of all time.
    Highly Recommended!

Yes, there are some issues, like having to restart the first mission a couple of times till you got the sequence 'wrong' and managed to move on. Watching the alien walk through walls and furniture a few times was amusing … up until it was able to bite my face off through a closed locker.

But regardless of some issues, the support was superb and always pretty quick to get back to you on the forums – in my experience anyway. Origin, Ubisoft and definitely EA could take a leaf out of their book.

I am enough of a man to admit that the ‘poo your pants’ factor got the better of me and I had to drop the difficulty down to easy from the Medbay onwards. But the replayability of the game is clear as I am presently leaving other, newer, titles collecting digital dust as I play my way through on medium. I can only imagine the horror of hard. Yikes!

I cannot recommend this game enough to people. I would also highly recommend getting surround headphones as it makes the experience all the more terrifying as you hear a door open behind you and that SSHHHHHHH as the alien spots you trying to save your game progress. Again, not afraid to say my sphincter has tightened many a time as I try and make a mad dash for a locker or tool cart.

    A truly brilliant experience.

2:00 AM: It's been a long, long, long time since I played a game that made me scream and curse so loudly that I thought the neighbors would call the police. This game is a masterpiece of suspense and has a soundtrack that amps up the drama exponentially. It should have a warning label when you start it. I'm 47 and fat. I thought I might be having a heart attack at times just knowing the monster was coming for me and I was a sitting duck. Boom, boom. Boom boom. Boom boom.

The expansive space station is meticulously put together. It has a huge amount of polygons in the many models, highly detailed textures, and tremendous lighting and shadow effects. All of which runs at a smooth frame-rate in high detail on my old dual Geforce 470s (in 3D Vision - Oh yeah. It plays well in 3D with a Helix mod patch). I think it runs so well because so much of a level is occluded; it's a result of the narrow passageways on the space station.

As much as I liked it, I have friends who berate it because it's a stealth thriller. You're not going to go running around shooting things and survive long. This is a beautifully told horror film game mash-up and is easily the best game I've played this year. It looks and feels like it's the second chapter in the series. Watch the movie (first one) and then play the game. The mix of early 80s tech and hyper-light-speed travel is surreal.

    Creative Assembly, thank you.

Headphones or a good AV set, lights off and prepare your heart for the tension.

The audio in this game is on par with it's lighting. Little sounds, the echoes, the music, the anxiety it causes are exactly like in the first Alien movie. The Alien itself is very accurate. He is a hunter, not a prey. He is smart, superior, stronger and faster than you and your only effective option is to avoid it.

I love the game. If you like survival/horror and stealth games, this is your game and you deserve to play on Hard so you can suffer and die a lot and still feel honored to be killed by the Alien. If you don't like survival/horror but still like Alien, this is your game too, just go with Easy or Normal and you will enjoy a very well crafted game made for Alien fans.

Quite a few times I jumped like a little girl when the alien found me and there are plenty of jump-scares throughout. I also like the fluidity of animation and the real emphasis on stealth and movement tactics. I often found myself pausing to think about my next move and the game does a nice job of guiding you, but not making it too linear. Lastly, the game also follows the story very well and those who have seen the films will feel the nostalgia.

In terms of the game's negatives, for me the biggest one was story length. The game took me 17 hours to complete and felt (surprisingly) too long. I feel like the developers have tried too hard to extend the game length by adding in more and more and more and more inconveniences forcing you to do missions which seems pointless. For example, you'd be told to open a door, only to find the door has no power. The game will then send you back the entire route you've just travelled to activate the power. Upon returning to the door, you require a keycard or pin code... everything in the game was like this. It was just fetch mission after fetch mission, and something would ironically always go wrong the moment you got close to completing an objective.

The alien also gets extremely annoying. At first I was scared of it, but after 7 hours or so I was just fed up of it. I was constantly having to stop and just wait for the alien to walk around the scripted route it was given before it went back into the vents, making it safe to move. I also find it silly how the alien follows you EVERYWHERE, despite going up and down elevators, across rail networks and keeping almost silent compared to other noises on the ship. Of course I understand the point of the game is to hide from it, but the realism of it just following YOU everywhere is frustrating.

Overall the game is worth the buy if you've got 15-20 hours spare, but personally I think the game is far too stretched, it would have been ideal to me as a ~12 hour game instead.

From the very start I was deeply impressed. Once I was fully exploring the Savastopol station, I was in awe at the graphics. Settings on full presents visuals out of this world. With good sound equipment like quality headphones the audio is stunning. Technically it is AAA in every way. It's like a movie set, and saying that I am not being pretentious.

Onto the alien. It's scary consistently and I didn't expect that. I guess many of us have read the alien behaviour is not-scripted. This means its path is not pre-determined beyond being made to visit the vicinity you are at. I have heard myself having the thought, "It's real", because it behaves in a natural manner. I think once the 'it's real' has passed through your mind you're in a world of fear. On reflection I felt I was in a virtual reality world with a live creature.

I think my main concern about the alien presumably not being killable doesn't really come into game-play. I think the point is that the alien is so fast is that if you try, you only get a couple of rounds off. It is capable of surviving that easily before it gets to the kill.

If you play as I did, moving carefully, those save-points came along just right. Every time I saw a save-point, I got the emotion, "Oh you beauty." The achievement of every lever pulled, or item collected or crafted, was safe.

Conclusion: With A:I having other enemies it actually delved into a stealth-shooter experience. However the shooting and using Molotovs and stuff, is massively dispersed with lots of tasks and hiding parts in between.

It took me thirty-six hours to complete. My score rating for A:I is 9.6/10 and the highest I have ever rated a game. I am honestly critical, and will not overlook issues, however A:I didn't present any. The visuals got a little bland in one section and that was all the complaint I could manage. Even when I was hiding under a desk, or in a cupboard for ages I was not bored. I was either watching intently the tracker, loving the graphics around me, or watching an alien.

I'll star right away by saying that I'm an Alien fan. But although it may be truth that I'm biased towards anything Alien, it's not less true that I'm far from loving, or even liking, every movie, game or book that includes it. In fact I can hate it wholeheartedly. But I do have a soft spot for the creature and can always find pleasure, if not in anything else, just by seeing it move.

Also, I'll somehow address other reviews in this review. Something that I tend to disapprove, but here – as a fan - I feel I must do. But I will not point my finger to specific reviews or publications.

When it comes to movie adaptations, one thing that all gamers know is that probably the game will kind of miss the whole point, and probably just be plain disrespectful. Something that book lovers also know very well most of the times Hollywood comes with yet another adaptation. That and recent tries to bring the xenomorph into our beloved medium teached me (us) to be very cautious regarding expectations towards this one.

But as soon as you start playing it, one thing quickly becomes obvious, Creative Assembly did a superb job recreating the world from the original movie. Ridley Stock's interpretation of the (low-tech) future is flawlessly portrayed here through the whole game. The environments are not only faithful to the original aesthetic values, but the developers made it feel like a real place that once was fully functional and where something went terrible wrong. The safety poster on the wall, advertisements, graffitis, the destruction, corpses, among many other details, contributed to an impressive work of world building. The graphical engine only reinforces this and it's further strengthen by a superb lighting system. But superb doesn't means perfect and one thing did bothered me. In a game where you feel frequently in awe with the lighting, it feels awkward that your character doesn't casts a shadow. More so when so much of the game is about stealth. It doesn't breaks the immersion but I would appreciate another layer of difficulty by having to be aware of your shadow when hiding. But maybe this was the exact reason why it was decided upon this design choice. Also, human character models do feel synthetic and out of place when compared with the quality of the Alien or the androids.

But it's not the visuals alone that help create this cohesive world, another aspect that sticks to your mind is the sound. On this department I absolutely have nothing to point. The soundtrack is just perfect, and every sound effect feels just right.

But what about it's core? What is A:I all about? As you might know by now this game fits the genre of survival horror – although I feel more comfortable with Suspense rather than Horror. You play as Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley – the main character from the movies- and you are seeking your mother. I won't go into details, lets just say that things just don't go exactly as planed and you end up being hunted by the Alien abroad the Sevastopol station, as well as having to deal with humans and rouge androids.

Probably the biggest “problem" A:I has, it's not being a game formatted for the masses. For example, the save system is vital to the game's pace, as save points are scarce, forcing you to adopt a conservative approach to most situations. A:I it's about managing your anxiety with patience. It encourages creative crisis solving while at the same time punishes those who are too daring. It's not an hard game in it self, providing you have the self control. In some ways it's similar to Dark Souls bonfire system, being as punishing as it can be rewarding.

As an Alien fan this is the game I was hoping for, and more. As a gamer, this is a wonderful step out formulaic and secure zones. It is a game that takes risks, and by doing so loses some mass appeal. A perfect game? No. But it is still kind of painful to see some major publications being too punishing to this game and simultaneously giving higher scores to broken and/or uninspired games. In many reviews it's clear that the reviewer rushed through the game, and points criticism in a way that seems that it was playing an whole different game. And this is why we can't have good things.

Easily one of the best games since the year 2000. Great story telling, immersive environments, dynamic enemies, all that jazz. To boot, on PC it renders wonderfully. I played the release version through twice without the slightest glitch or hangup, which as compares to some recent releases, is a real relief. Srsly, whatever their charging now, this game's worth your money.

Alien isolation fundamentally achieves what is set out to do. Put you in an almost powerless position and toy with your senses. This however comes mostly from the fear of jump scares which definitely adds to the experience, but you can't help but think its too easy...nonetheless the game had me frantically searching the screen and pausing quite a fews times. If you havent allready,,. watch the movie (Alien from 1979) first !.
You will get so much more out of the gaming experience.
The game is an ode to the movie. The sound effects, music.. its fantastic. It will give you an extra chill or two when all of a sudden certain music/sound effects starts playing ingame. The game does have some flaws; too much backtracking and the world is under

The game does have some flaws; too much backtracking and the world is under populated imo.
But theres nothing that cant be fixed with some patches, dlc`s etc.

I`m still half way in the game, but allready eager to get my hands on future dlc`s, expansions.

    Enjoy

I have been really hyped about the Alien and the "scariness", but to be perfectly honest - been playing on my own in midnight, and I was actually looking forward to meet alien and than been little bit dissapointed about it. Alien is randomly spawning around, and therefor many times it is completely unlogical and impossible.

I really feel that design of Nostromo is perfect, graphics, sound and atmosphere of this game is well optimized and looking really good. I even watched Alien straight after game and the job done in movie and in game is amazing - like a twins. Well done guys!

Game design and AI (understand the core gameplay) is on the other side weeker point in this game. And lowers the general result really high. It´s simply feel like Call of Duty, without enemies, weapons, and rambo style - which is cool and I am happy about it.. Though, what else is in this game left than? Minigames are repetitive. Hiding - understand crouching and Alien which sometimes see you where no-one else could and overlooked you in situation where half-blinded person with 2 promiles would see you just prooves one thing - AI is the weakest link in this game. If Alien was more "intelligent" it could be much more interesting and build on this would be much more easier. First Half-life for example had an amazing AI. Where army guys were talking to each other and seeking tactically thru the enviroment - that was something amazing at that time - and that is something I would really love to see in this Alien game.

My result to this game is 7/10:

10/10 for perfect graphics, sound and atmosphere
    4,5/10 for gamedesign and ai

My final thought is - check it out later, when price is little bit lower - but you should not miss it completely.

The environment and graphics on this game are insanely good, they grip you right ahead and keep you for the rest of the game. The interface, the tools/weapons and the whole game in general is unbelievably detailed and well thought.

If you like the horror-action genre, this game is a must play but even if you're not, I highly suggest you at least check this out and give it a try.

How scary is Alien Isolation? I've never been more scared in my life! I've played horror games but this game truly terrified me. I had feelings of dread in my stomach. I had to end up playing this game in some sections in 10 minute increments. I'm a 31 year old man. After hearing myself scream and have my body shake in terror, well i'm no longer sure about that man part.

This game does not contain atmosphere. That's because it is all enveloping, surrounding you as you are walking or creeping through the Sevastopol Space Station. You most certainly are hoping to all hell that you are not running through that station. I have never been so immersed in a game before. The lighting effects, the smoke and steam effects, the fire effects are all top notch. Best fire effect I've ever seen.

The audio. OMG the Audio! From the background music to the sound of metal bending or being walked upon to the ambient sounds of well everything. I have never experienced such superb use of sounds in a game.

The game developers Creative Assembly have gone to great lengths with this game to make it as immersive as possible. They had to get the graphics and art style top notch and they succeeded. They had to get the sounds perfected and they succeeded. They had to get the gameplay perfect and they succeeded. It's like I am there in the Alien movie.

I'm giving this a 10/10 Game of the Year award. Must buy.

However in warning and after watching this game be played by multiple people I have to let you know that there are two ways of playing this game.

You can either play it as Amanda Ripley where you are on board a space station trying to survive. Or you can play it as a computer gamer sitting behind your monitor in your room with distractions or an attitude of i'll just walk around in the game world la di da and hope the alien doesn't see me but if it does thats too bad i'll just reload and walk again hoping it doesn't see me because i'm not in the game and i just want to finish this game to go play CoD...

It's quite easy to be Amanda Ripley. The atmosphere is there. The graphics are there. The gameplay is there. The sounds are there. You will get the most enjoyment out of it as Amanda Ripley.

This game makes you crawl like a goddamn worm, in constant fear of being squashed. I was scared to leave the closet I was hiding in, because the monster was somewhere out there. [Dec 2014, p.68]

The Creative Assembly’s game, however, is cooked; left to boil so long it loses all flavor and texture. For 10 hours, Isolation is one of the best horror games ever made, until a second, poorly made game bursts out of its heart.

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
