The good: There is the right feel of loneliness at times, the constant stress of being hunted, sometimes the intrigue of exploration. Ripley works well as a character, most others do too. The Alien itself is very interesting for a long time (until you learn how it thinks, even though it also learns how you think sometimes) and it's nice that you really get to explore the space station. The visuals are terrific with all the old school, Alien style tech and industrial feel of everything. That carries the game a long way. The story, the background, all of that is excellent.

This game could well have been a clear ten if not for a very few things:
Only two things wrong, really. One is that the game is a bit too linear. You lack the tool for door x, you know you'll come back to door x once you get that tool. Sometimes you can explore other areas and you'll be rewarded with loot (important for survival) but most of the time you follow a path. Sometimes takes a bit out of the exploration. Two is that the game over-extends slightly near the end. It should have stopped a bit before it does. One or two too many twists and turns and in the end you just want to get it over with which is a shame but doesn't severely damage the overall impression of having played an excellent game.

The story is good, but the voice acting is average (and model lip-synching is poor) but rarely does it affect my enjoyment. I played it since it's midnight release on Xbox One and for several scary hours each day since. There were some laggy moments and other slight bugs which I hope will get fixed with patches but no showstoppers. Buy this game. It's a going to be a classic. Expand

The bad: can be a bit difficult (although you shouldn't feel shame in playing on easy if needed). Can be a bit stressful (I couldn't play Amnesia because of this, but I can this game). There is no hand-holding, you have a map with markers, but a lot of times you have to think to find your way (it's intentional and well done though). Cinematics are sometimes a bit lacking in the visual department. Character animations are not the best.
If you are an Alien fan you will feel blessed, specially halfway through when the story starts to unfold. Thank you Creative Assembly for staying true to the franchise and thank you Sega for making it possible. /buttlicking ;)

Even without the Aliens unscripted AI this game would be brilliant with its well realised world that basically sits you in Ridley's idea for this universe buts its the Alien that sets this game apart from games like Outlast or Amnesia.

The issue most horror games have is predictable AI with set paths, while its still scary you can easily learn the enemies path and get into this repetition of waiting around a corner and then moving out when they've gone past, now while this does happen from time to time in Isolation with the other enemies (Androids and Humans), when you're dealing with the Alien there is no scripted path.
The fact that the Alien doesn't follow a path makes it so refreshing because theres no studying its path and then exploiting it, theres just you having to make quick decisions and using your available gadgets to improvise on the fly.
This is also another area games like Outlast and Amnesia have a problem with, giving you no way to defend yourself. Now while that may seem to be a good thing and be more scary, allowing you to have a fighting chance prevents the game from becoming boring and monotonous.

If you've been waiting for a proper Alien game this is as close as you're gonna get, great campaign length (took me 21 hours on Hard) and wonderful atmosphere make for one of the best survival horror games.

I haven't played such a nightmarish experience in a long time. And that's a good thing. When you think the nightmare is over you are thrown into another one. It took me 22 hours to get through the campaign on hard. The difficulty is perfectly balanced. As long as you take your time and proceed carefully you should be fine most of the time.

The gameplay mostly consists of you sneaking, staying quiet, hacking, crafting items to distract enemies or impair them. The further you proceed on your different missions you will find upgrades for your tools that will allow you to access areas you earlier couldn't. You will also get your hands on upgrades for your make shift weapons. Lethal weapons will eventually become part of your inventory but it's recommended to avoid using them but the further you get in the game the more lethal situations will become and they will come in handy. You can backtrack if you want to, or explore areas that are not part of the current mission. If you do you might find secret audio logs, items and easter eggs. So the game never feels very linear but instead quite free which I haven't seen since early days of Resident Evil. Of course there's always imminent danger that waits for you to make a mistake. It's even more similar in the way that you have to save your game at save stations, but don't worry, you don't need an ink ribbon. However, the game doesn't pause when you save and it takes a while for the station to load up. Nor does the game pause when you bring up your inventory and crafting system, which is reminiscent of Dead Space.

The story is good and quite straight forward, and it does contain twists and turns that did make me jump with excitement and surprise. However I wish that the conclusion would have been more satisfying. The voice acting is solid but the lipsyncing is quite poor. Especially when it's in-game and not a cut-scene.

The game itself is very well built. At no time did I experience any performance loss, crashes or game glitches that interfered with the gameplay. During my long playthrough I only noticed one or two oddity not even worth mentioning. I played the game on ultra settings and the visuals are very impressive when it comes to lights and shadows. There so many details in the environment in this game that it's amazing. At a closer inspection though, some low-res textures can be found but overall an incredible looking game.
The sound design is perfect, it re-creates and expand upon all the sounds and music from the movie Alien that it makes you feel like you really are in that universe.
The physics are great with your body reacting to everything around you in the environment, you might for example accidentally kick something on the floor and cause a loud noise or tip over furniture etc.

The option menu is well fleshed out with many different visual settings, including FOV.

The different mechanics like crafting, hacking, using tools and weapons is very intuitive. For example when entering a passcode you use your numpad, or when re-loading a weapon you must hold R to reload a full magazine, if you just press R once it will only load one bullet for example. Computer interfaces requires you to use your keyboard to navigate, like if there are no mouses which add to the push button feel of the 70s.

I was worried that the alien's "AI" would fail and break the game, but I'm glad to have been proven wrong. Not at any time did I see the alien glitch out or do something stupid. It really is a ruthless killer that requires your respect. The same goes for the humans and the androids. The humans work together as teams and if they are hostile you better avoid them or distract them to get to where you need to go. The androids are lethal if they catch you, they can't run but they do walk steadily towards you like a terminator.

Conclusion: While it does borrow a lot from other games in the terms of gameplay mechanics, this survival horror game combines old school gameplay with an extremely impressive, dynamic enemy, incredible visual and sound design and a thrilling story in full blown Alien spirit. It's a truly unique experience. If you are a fan, don't miss out on Amanda Ripley's struggle for survival and quest to find the truth..

This game is brilliant. It's the first game about Ridley Scott's xenomorphs that's actually been a horror survival game. In my opinion, it makes the Alien a bit too powerful, but overall it nails the vibe and the experience of the movie. It you enjoyed the movies you need to play this. Alien Isolation, is absolutely amazing, it's stunning atmosphere and faithfulness is at it's finest. The unpredicable Alien which suits the game very well, kept frustration at bay and tension at the front door. I found myself being relieved at each interval when I would switch from Joe's to the Xeno or even humans. It keeps it fresh. What holds it back is the glitches that are a little to frequent to ignore. People talk without moving their lips, whole death sequences falter leaving a character alive who is scripted as being dead. These things aside, the best story telling didn't happen in the cutscenes (although those are a delight), they happened in the voice acting from Amanda herself. Brilliant sound effects and music, lighting effects, superb atmosphere and it keeps the tension thru whole game. You simply feel the game, if you know what I mean ;)

I stopped playing Cyberbug 2077 and started playing Alien Isolation when i got it for free from Epic Games Store and i haven't stopped playing till now. This is how games should be, sega should give lessons to neoobs of how game making works. And I'm not even an Alien movies fan.

    Pros:

    - Visually stunning (authentic to the Alien movies)
    - Excellent sound and music (again, authentic to the movies)
    - Interesting and engaging story
    - Long game... a lot of gameplay

    Cons:

    - Alien isn't as scary to me as it's probably intended to be
    - Too many Alien encounters make it less frightening

I'll star right away by saying that I'm an Alien fan. But although it may be truth that I'm biased towards anything Alien, it's not less true that I'm far from loving, or even liking, every movie, game or book that includes it. In fact I can hate it wholeheartedly. But I do have a soft spot for the creature and can always find pleasure, if not in anything else, just by seeing it move.

Also, I'll somehow address other reviews in this review. Something that I tend to disapprove, but here – as a fan - I feel I must do. But I will not point my finger to specific reviews or publications.

When it comes to movie adaptations, one thing that all gamers know is that probably the game will kind of miss the whole point, and probably just be plain disrespectful. Something that book lovers also know very well most of the times Hollywood comes with yet another adaptation. That and recent tries to bring the xenomorph into our beloved medium teached me (us) to be very cautious regarding expectations towards this one.

But as soon as you start playing it, one thing quickly becomes obvious, Creative Assembly did a superb job recreating the world from the original movie. Ridley Stock's interpretation of the (low-tech) future is flawlessly portrayed here through the whole game. The environments are not only faithful to the original aesthetic values, but the developers made it feel like a real place that once was fully functional and where something went terrible wrong. The safety poster on the wall, advertisements, graffitis, the destruction, corpses, among many other details, contributed to an impressive work of world building. The graphical engine only reinforces this and it's further strengthen by a superb lighting system. But superb doesn't means perfect and one thing did bothered me. In a game where you feel frequently in awe with the lighting, it feels awkward that your character doesn't casts a shadow. More so when so much of the game is about stealth. It doesn't breaks the immersion but I would appreciate another layer of difficulty by having to be aware of your shadow when hiding. But maybe this was the exact reason why it was decided upon this design choice. Also, human character models do feel synthetic and out of place when compared with the quality of the Alien or the androids.

But it's not the visuals alone that help create this cohesive world, another aspect that sticks to your mind is the sound. On this department I absolutely have nothing to point. The soundtrack is just perfect, and every sound effect feels just right.

But what about it's core? What is A:I all about? As you might know by now this game fits the genre of survival horror – although I feel more comfortable with Suspense rather than Horror. You play as Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley – the main character from the movies- and you are seeking your mother. I won't go into details, lets just say that things just don't go exactly as planed and you end up being hunted by the Alien abroad the Sevastopol station, as well as having to deal with humans and rouge androids.

Probably the biggest “problem" A:I has, it's not being a game formatted for the masses. For example, the save system is vital to the game's pace, as save points are scarce, forcing you to adopt a conservative approach to most situations. A:I it's about managing your anxiety with patience. It encourages creative crisis solving while at the same time punishes those who are too daring. It's not an hard game in it self, providing you have the self control. In some ways it's similar to Dark Souls bonfire system, being as punishing as it can be rewarding.

As an Alien fan this is the game I was hoping for, and more. As a gamer, this is a wonderful step out formulaic and secure zones. It is a game that takes risks, and by doing so loses some mass appeal. A perfect game? No. But it is still kind of painful to see some major publications being too punishing to this game and simultaneously giving higher scores to broken and/or uninspired games. In many reviews it's clear that the reviewer rushed through the game, and points criticism in a way that seems that it was playing an whole different game. And this is why we can't have good things.

The game is at first look really amazing, but later there are some repeating situations, repeating sounds, repeating environments and places, where you can (even) get stuck for a very long time, so, the game is in the end boring and repeating. That is a pity, becausy the game could be really awsome. That is the reason, I rate it 7/10. Pity...

Unscripted events abound in this game. Whether it's the alien hunting you, or you battling it out with other survivors or the alien turning those same survivors into kibble thanks to a confrontation you engineered.....it's simply amazing. And scary. Holy hell is it scary.
People who claim its too frustrating or that they died too many times....this isn't the genre for you. And you're not playing properly. Sorry. You're not. I've died. But never to the point that it's frustrating. Careful, considered gameplay pays off.
People who whinge that you can't fight back.....sorry, you're wrong too. Unless shooting, braining, or burning androids and human adversaries doesn't count. It's simply that you need to consider whether the risk is worth that approach. And understanding that Amanda Ripley is not "Master Chief."
The AI does not cheat. The AI simply doesn't follow set routines. If you make noise, odds are it will investigate. If there's no reason to think you couldn't have left a corner of the map, that SOB will look for you with will and a purpose. You just need to figure a way out.
The length is fine. Could it have been trimmed a little? Sure. But it's never tedious. And frankly, I enjoyed every minute...every image..every sound. It's like you're in the flipping Alien universe. All that's missing are the smells.
Replayability? Yep. Survivor mode is awesome for a quick fix. They'll be adding to it as part of the season pass (yes, season passes are separate discussion but I think this one will be worth it). And even with the campaign, understand that outside of a few set events the alien will never be in the same place, never act exactly the same way every time you play. Items are in different locations. There are not guarantees. Hell, I'll play again to see just how far I can get without dying.
If you're a fan of the franchise or horror games, period, you need to pick this up.

So many of the details from the Nostromo are present on Sevastopol station, like the dipping birds, the cassette-playing boom boxes, the style of the rooms and bulkheads, the 70s era low tech look and feel to everything. You even get to visit the iconic alien derelict ship in the game via a flashback. Cool! But the most important thing it captures is the feeling of dread, the anticipation of death around every corner. The alien is terrifying, but you are most afraid when you don't even see it, just hear it stalking the halls or scuttling around in the air ducts.

Alien: Isolation features a simple but suspenseful story, fleshed out by logs, radio communications, and a few direct interactions with other survivors on the station. The length and pacing of the game is excellent, there is never a dull moment. The manual save system that I was worried about is actually implemented very well, and I like how they incorporated the save stations into the game world so organically.

Visually, the environments are wonderfully detailed, believably authentic, and sometimes spectacular. I was disappointed in the character animations, however, which looked more like something from five years ago, and the dialogue was not always synced up well with the mouth movements. I hope CA focuses on this more if they do a sequel.

My only real criticism of the gameplay is with the last thirty minutes or so. Without giving anything away, after a certain significant event happens to your character, the gameplay suddenly changes from a stealth/survival game to a consoley/XBox linear action game with cut scenes and a final scene that is a god-awful quick time event. For a game built on the dynamic of completing your objectives while using your wits and limited resources to avoid detection by the alien and other human and android enemies, to end with you mashing keys when prompted was a real letdown. This game would have earned a 10/10 if it had a worthy finish that had you utilize the skills that got you through the first 97 percent of it.

E' fatto tutto benissimo, dai comandi all'Alieno. Expand

I have never been as immersed in a game as in this one. There aren't many real flaws I can think of, and I didn't really have any real problems with the save-stations that a lot of the negativity seems to come back to. Sure, there were times that I lost quite some progress, but then you realize that you hadn't really gotten that far anyway, you had just been hiding in a locker for ten minutes, being too scared to even move, and now when you know where to go, things go a lot smoother. Besides, the longer you go without a save-station, the more you want to keep alive, making the game even more stressful and thrilling. I never felt the game was unfair at any point. I have always liked the Alien-movies (especially the first two of course), but this game sparked my interest and love for the franchise.

The only reason the game doesn't get a 10 from me is that some parts of the game has too many backtrack-moments. Not necessarily that you end up visiting places several times throughout the game, but more to the fact that there constantly is something you have to fix to continue progressing. Having to go back towards the start of the level, just to start some generator, then go back again, and so forth, can be a bit frustrating. I also wish there were more friendly (or non-hostile at least) humans on-board the station. Towards the end of the game, you also end up in a bit too many situations that feel very scripted and "video-game-typical"-like, dodging trains, falling elevators, aliens and facehuggers, while everything is burning and so forth. I know this is the climax of the game, but it could have been a bit more subtle, and as it is now it's on the edge of being over the top.

All in all though, this game is amazing, and gives you a fantastic experience. You won't have fun all the time, but chances are you will constantly be scared (absolutely terrified at some points even). I was at least. If you claim you weren't, you are probably playing it wrong or in the wrong setting :>

While I love the Alien, and how it just goes around where it wants, I'm not as thrilled about dealing with the other survivors and droids. The most effective way to deal with them is to shoot them, but then that brings the Alien. Another low point is my two fellow survivors. I know so little about them, and really don't care about them. I have no motivation to help and or save them. Also, there is a lot of back tracking in this game. To get to your goal, you have to go back to the beginning of the level or earlier to do something. From the very start, there are areas you can't get to until you get a tool, that after several hours of play I still haven't gotten. The story line is crap so far, the voice acting is bland and often the mouths don't move with the words. For all the attention to detail this game has, I'm really disappointed in the acting. Despite all that, I love this game. It's very addicting. Just when you think you avoided the alien and come out from cover, it ends up right behind you and you die. There is a great amount of frustration in this game, but just getting to a save point is often a victory in and of itself. It's a game that has the atmosphere of bioshock, but none of it's gripping story line. Yet, it's just as addictive as bioshock. I give it a 9 because the graphics, the ambience, the lore is top notch. I knocked off because of the frustratingly way you have to often back track, the poor story line and limited character development. Expand

To stand a chance at survival, you will have to use every bit of what you learn throughout the game and think outside the box more often than not. The story here is well written, and I found myself fully immersed in the claustrophobic environment Alien: Isolation provides.

The visuals are well done (even if it appears every character is sweating in the same places on their faces the whole time), and the core mechanics of the game are easy to comprehend and intuitive. For me personally, the game's sound is what makes this title shine. I absolutely recommend playing with headphones if you have a decent pair because within the first half an hour to an hour, I found myself jumping at things that I probably wouldn't have otherwise and the timing of the sound effects and minimalist music is almost flawlessly weaved together in a way that proves most unsettling. The lighting is also executed in a manner that causes heart pounding moments that are again woven in with well timed sound effects and musical pieces.

Once the Alien (and other threats) make its / their presence known, this game really takes off, as does your heart rate. It is not for the faint of heart. I also recommend playing the game at its hardest difficulty right from the start because it really does become that much more terrifying, and I've always believed that if you play at the hardest setting from the beginning, there is nothing to compare it to and you will find ways to adapt. The game takes cues from other games such as Amnesia and Outlast in the "hiding" mechanic, but it works even better than those games for the most part. I also got Bioshock vibes from the station as I'd compare it to Rapture in terms of how the ship itself feels.

The only thing preventing this game from earning a perfect score, oddly for me at least, echoes something I've read elsewhere and that is it is a tad too long. Towards the end of your time on this ship that makes the Ishamura look like a space paradise, the scares do tend to become less intense because you've dealt with them for so long. However, the varied enemies (of which there are more than a handful) does keep it somewhat fresh up until that point. Had they shaved about an hour or so off of the entire thing, it would have been perfect. Having said that, it's a small complaint to say the game is too much of a good thing because even then, it's not like I felt as though the game wore out its welcome. The scares just weren't as panic inducing as they were earlier and perhaps that's a good thing anyway because there are plenty to be had.

Running and gunning is not the primary object of this game. Doing either of those things can and will cause you to start over from your last save point. Dying in this game happens often, but it never felt frustrating for me. The bottom line here though is this is the Aliens game fans have been waiting for. I never was a true fan of the films, but that's a testament to how good this game truly is. If you enjoy the series, survival horror, space related games, or even stealth games, then this should be on your list of must have titles for this year. With DLC, multiple play styles and modes to keep things truly fresh, the game does indeed have tremendous replay value as well. For me, the whole experience was incredible and "Isolation" is a truly fitting title and I hope its success allows them to give fans more in the future.

Human and synthetic enemies offer a nice variance to the gameplay, and blasting those damn synths to smithereens with your bolt gun or luring the alien to kill a bunch of bandits is a great power fantasy moment. The game also handles backtracking nicely, and you actually feel good about knowing the layout of the station, because it gives you a big edge. My only criticism is that I was very misled by the difficulty descriptions. They pretty much state that hard mode is the way it was meant to be played. Really it just breaks the immersion due to how often you'll die over and over. It's almost as if the Alien has inserted a radio-beacon probe straight up Ripley's ass leading to sometimes just absurd instances of the Alien magically coming across the map to the most random locker in the most secure room you could find just to face rape you 10 times over unless you just say screw it and run for the exit.

    Otherwise... fun =)

My rating would change based on whom I was giving a review to. A younger gamer whose teeth have been cut on DOTA, GTA, COD, and Skyrim? I'd give them a 6, you'd probably want to stay away. An older gamer who grew up on 2600/C64 and can remember having conversations about the "Alien" in seventh grade? Why I'd give this game a 10 to that gentleman or lady and highly reccommend it. The actual gameplay is basic survival horror, turn this on so that this opens, so you can go turn this on. This game however is not about the gameplay. Comparing this to a haunted house is a better frame of reference then comparing it to Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space. This game is about enviroment, tone, and atmosphere. I have personally enjoyed it and appreciate what the developers have put into it. The game experience it delivers is unique and truly does capture the "Feel" of the orginal film. I really want to emphasize the word "feel". There are games more terrorfying out. The 20 minute silent hill demo was creepy as hell. Alien: Isolation delivers a unique "feel" of terror. Moments like calling a transit and waiting in a corner somewhere, hiding, looking back and forth for the Alien to pop out are awesome. Really enjoy the game, dont expect it to be a huge hit, love it regardless. Expand

Walking around the ship in the beginning I felt like I was literally in the Ridley Scott film and I was very impressed with the detail of ambiance put into the game.

Additionally, my highest recommendation is to play this with headphones on turned up to an intimidating level. The booms and thuds of traversing through the environments will awaken your instinctual senses like it was created to do.

The sound design is superior, the environments are surreal and I was very impressed with the AI in this game. I admit they are not perfect (a few times I was crouched in plain sight with no response); however, I was very impressed that the AI never followed a set pattern and was very unpredictable. A few times after dying I would reload my last save and the AI was not only doing different things; they would sometimes arrive from different directions and rooms than previous. Having the AI open a door right before I was about to walk through is exhilarating when I was able to spontaneously hide and get away with being detected.

Just like every game, it also has its flaws. A few times the in-game dialogue did not match up with the character speaking, not just a little, the mouth would be closed when dialogue was being said. At times they looked like E.T. trying to say "I'll be right here." Additionally, there were times that I wanted to pick up a weapon an enemy AI was using against me and I was unable to. I assume I can later in the game; but, at the moment it doesn't make any sense that Amanda would take their ammo and not their weapon.

Overall, it is a very solid game. If you are looking for a true AAA game for next-gen this is it. There are a lot of good looking games; but, this one seems to be the defining moment that indicates we are in the next-gen era. The graphics, sound, AI, voice-acting (including Sigourney Weaver), and overall ambiance of the game is truly breath-taking (you will literally hold your own breath under pressure).

    Go play!

    PROS:
    - Very detailed world with good ambience, it really feels like you are inside a rundown space station.
    - The Alien AI got some bashing, but I can say that it always kept me on my toes and posed a good challenged and instilled a sense of dread. The first 20 or so times will really freak you out.
    - VR implementation was good enough, far from perfect but it shows that the did indeed gave it some love.

    CONS:
    - A bit too long for its own good. By the middle/end of the game it drags a lot, reusing areas, forcing a lot of arbitrary backtracking (There's a scene where you have to run around through the same area back and forth 3 times). It's a bit like Dead Space: you go somewhere to do something, once you get there it doesn't work/it is useless/it's destroyed, so you are rerouted somewhere to do something else which will also not accomplish anything at all.
    - Gameplay gets a bit repetitive and later you learn how to game the Alien AI and that knowledge combined with the flamethrower makes it become more like a nuisance than a fearless unkillable stalker (granted, it happens after several hours of tense gameplay, so this actually felt like a relief).

Conclusion: If you have a DK2, don't think twice, get this game. Unless you don't like to experience dread and fear in a videogame or you have some serious heart condition.

Why this game deserves a 9: It's a game that's made to be played on hard mode, punishing your every mistake. That being said, they are extremely lenient on crouching. Crouching almost makes you invisible. I had plenty of times where an alien couldn't see me down the hall simply because I was crouched. I had many other times where I could just run around a table in circles and the alien would never find me.

Why people score poor on this game: It's hard. People who get frustrated score poorly. It's a trial and error game. If you want to survive better try laying down some traps to run to in case you mess up. And for all of you complaining that the Alien is too big and walks around...get over it. It's a way better idea in a horror game. Just the sheer heavy terror in the alien's footsteps tells you so many things about the creature you are trying to elude. He's not meant to be messed with.

What are we expecting from a game of this genre when we first hit the play button? To see a freak show with grotesque monsters in a chilly environment? We love this genre, because it's not about the monsters, it's not about the setting really, it's about the player. While our emotions are amplified in a world where we can't predict what's waiting for us behind the corner, we feel more and more alive because we behave here as naturally as we would if we were really there. We would hide, we would listen for noises, we would walk with caution, and try to survive.
This game really brings us what we were hoping for. The beast is as majestic and smart, as I always imagined to be. Alan Dean Foster wrote some very good book adaptations of the movies and even enhanced the world created by Ridley Scott. It was about time, for the gaming industry to approach the concept with some vision.
Level design, atmosphere: captures the soul of the '79 movie without a doubt, also it's a bit familiar to those who played Dead Space (those guys could have made a mean Alien game also...I think). While the game does not innovate in many areas regarding the level design it gets the job done to create the setting for your deadly adventure through the station.
Musical score, art style, every little gizmo, CRT screen, everything shows that the designers were working hard to stay true to the original concept of Alien, the movie where all started.
If you are fan of the Alien series, pick up this game, it's worth it. If you are not, it is still one of the best survival horror games released lately, even if you don't feel that nostalgic scent of the original movie.
There are a few issues we can talk about... Facial animations are pretty stiff and unrealistic, lip sync is mediocre at best in cutscenes and plain bad otherwise. But this visual issues are not a big problem because we are not really here for that. And there is the story... while it's pretty good, I really feel like they should have been bolder when writing it. When someone tries too hard not to break any element that makes the game a true integration in the Alien universe somehow is too cautious when writing a story and any writer would suffer of the lack of freedom in their creativity.
Bottom line is: This is that type of game that will stay in your heart even when you are not playing, and every moment is a thrill when you are. I can only say: Thank you for that crew that finally brought us the Alien in it's true splendor in a game.

It all feels very Alien, and that's what's so amazing about it.
The Ambient Score is Fantastic, Changing constantly depending on the situation you find yourself in. It really adds to the immersion, because when things get tense, and the music starts to rise, you're going to wanna think of a plan. The Alien itself is incredible, whenever its on the prowl, the clock is just slowly ticking away because you know, it's only a matter of time before he finds you. The Working Joes can be just as scary at times, coming at you like a terminator as you count you're bullets to decide whether you can take it on face to face or find a good hiding place and wait for them to give up searching for you. As an Alien fan, i think the overall story is a little lackluster. It starts off with an amazing opening sequenc, begging you into the world of Alien, then starts to fall a bit flat considering the supporting characters are just bland and instantly forgettable. The Protagonist However, Amanda Ripley, fits perfectly into the Alien Universe, and you want to know more about her. You feel for her on her journey to figure out what happened to her mother, and it's amazing to see What happened to Amanda Ripley in-between Alien & Aliens. Alien: Isolation is yet again a great example, of a stellar Survival-Horror Experience.

The game captures the old analog feel of the universe perfectly. Everything seems futuristic but at the same time feels old and clunky. That mix of old and new is hard to capture and Creative Assembly did this with flying colors. The alien itself is also brought to life with beautiful animations and looks exactly how I remember from the old film. Unfortunately, characters and their mouths in some cutscenes can be a little lacking. However, never to the point you are taken out of the universe. Cutscenes and character models still look great. Just nothing to marvel over. I also noticed how in game characters lips wouldn't match what they were saying all the time. Forgivable with everything else the game nails. Visuals- 9/10

    Gameplay
    --------------
Finally an alien game that doesn't have you blasting away every alien in sight. The game is a first person survival horror that focuses on stealth. In fact it is a MUST! The alien is STRONG and will kill you on sight. I have seen some complaints about the alien being OP but honestly......it would kill you as fast as it does. The instant death adds CRAZY tension as you desperately hide under desks and in lockers. The game is long and needs to be taken slow, which will not appeal to all. If you try and sprint at the wrong time the alien will hear you and it won't take long till its all over. Also, there have been comments about it getting repetitive, which I believe is false. The game never lets up the tension and you believe everything that is going wrong and why you would need to head back to an area. Which, never happens that often. You may go back to 1 or 2 areas but they will be VERY different because the alien and station have changed since your last time being there. Which all adds to the believability of the game. Amanda is given a wide range of weapons but, unfortunately I found myself hugging the flamethrower all the time when I got it. All the other guns and weapons look and function perfectly. But the flame thrower is such a safe haven from the alien its hard to get away from. There are a few hacking mini games that add CRAZY tension. They do not pause the game and for all you know the alien could be right behind you as you start, making every encounter with a hackable door tense, and awesome. Amanda moves well and is easy to control. I never ran into a SINGLE bug or glitch in over 16+ hours. The gameplay is great, but I felt that the flamethrower (still a great aspect) made me feel too safe at moments. When you get the chance to use the other weapons on people and androids, like the pistol, it feels fresh and fun. But be warned, the alien can hear every shot! Gameplay- 9/10

    Sound and Voice
    ----------------------
The game sounds beautiful. Clunky sounds that fit beautifully with the universe. As you walk down the corridors you will hear your every step echo through the halls, worrying you if someone is listening. The clunky analog computers sound exactly like how you would imagine. Kezia Burrows voice acts Amanda Ripley and does a phenomenal job. Every time something goes wrong you BELIEVE she is distressed at the situation. You believe Amanda is scared out of her mind at moments because of the great line deliveries Kezia Burrows gives. a specific moment is when Amanda is dodging train cars......I felt like an actual persons life was in my hands. All other characters are acted very well as well minus one character named Marlow who was mostly forgettable. Also, the music is perfect, fitting in the world perfectly. And hearing the old classic theme is an amazing throw back. Tense music during Alien/Human/Android attacks are great. Sound and voice- 8/10

    Story
    -------
Story starts of a little quick, which seems to just THROW Amanda into the current situation. Once you arrive on the Station, that is where the story begins to shine. Figuring out ways to survive and find your crew, while simultaneously trying to search of answer about Ellen (Amanda's mother) is fun. However, the game seems to throw away the whole Ellen aspect of the story early with one quick moment with the flight recorder which I won't spoil. Then it is brought back up for a quick instant at the end. Still fun when its happening though. The true fun is in the story of survival which is captured beautifully by everything above. No details about that, in order to avoid spoilers. Just know its a fun ride. Story- 8/10

All aspects of this game are strong. Other than some wonky lip syncing in game, feeling to attached to the flamethrower, and the Ellen story seeming tossed, this game nails everything. From the amazing visuals, to the fun gameplay, great Voice acting and sound design, and Amanda's great story of survival on the sevastopol make for a game that will appeal to all gamers. Not just fans of the universe. Alien Isolation is a ride worth taking.

So in terms of graphics you have very nice graphics with high frame rates on a less than midline system. 8/10

Gameplay: This is a survival Horror game and seriously plays like it. The aiming was a little off but better than a LOT of similar games I've played and the controls were responsive. The little 'mini-games' for the various unlocking tools were a nice addition those they did eventually become tiresome. But overall a strong showing with the responsiveness. 8/10

Story: This is where the game shines. Some people prefer the movie Aliens to the original. I am not one of them. And this game really help with the feel of the first game to me. The additional stories other than just the main campaign are also well written. I think one of the things I appreciate most is that the character of Ellen Ripley is a strong female character that does not fight the usual stereotype. She is an engineer (when in the real work only 10% of engineers are women). The game does not rely on making her a sexual object. And the terrot and atmosphere the game presents is strong. 9/10

Overall Average of the scores would be 8.3. I try to be objective but I do have a love for this genre so it will be a little biased in this review and round up instead of down to 9/10.

The alien kills you immediately after it catches you, and the alien is faster than you, so one mess up and you are done for. The alien "OP" is what many people are whining about, how the game is too hard or unfair. BS. The game is designed to give you the feeling of dread, and if the game is too easy, it defeats the whole purpose. The graphics are top notch, everything made to exquisite detail. The only gripe I have is the characters we meet early, the girl we have to save. I could really care less, especially when a 8 foot murder machine wants my blood. Overall Alien Isolation is a 9/10. Most enjoyed game experience Iv had this year.
I'd recommend playing with some good headphones in a dark room. I played this on a pc and it's nicely optimised. Story's pretty solid and kept me engaged. I had some odd glitches with the A.I which is why it got a 9 but only on odd occasions. Otherwise 10/10

The game is moderately difficult in a unique way where it certainly requires more analysis and awareness in stealth methods of getting from point A to point B compared to the typical run and shoot method. There is a learning curve where growing some balls and moving onto the next objective is required. You may feel a bit tense or strung up during game play but that indicates a positive sign that you are entertained. Not playing at night times or giving yourself a few days to mentally stabilize yourself may occur.
This game is long but not RPG long so its well with the $$$ and there is re-playability in terms of beating the game again just to see how better you do your second time around.

Graphics are also great/optimized. Does not seem to be taxing on system hardware when it runs. Sound quality is great, music cues perfectly during game play.

Beautifully designed, incorporating Rob Cobb's designs from the Nostomo into Sevastopol, it truly is a gorgeous game. But the setting is also scary: creaky, full of murderous androids and humans, falling apart, dead bodies and graffiti everywhere. Yet nothing is quite as terrifying as the Alien. Simply hearing the soon-to-be common sound of him coming out of the vent system nearby sets my heart rate soaring. There are so many tense and scary moments; you have to be dead careful and on your toes at all times, even on easy. And, even on easy, the Alien's A.I. will pick up on things (such as where you hide the most, it'll investigate where things come from if you throw enough distractions its way, etc). In fact, I'd call it 'not-so-easy' to be honest. The med-bay escape, trap, reactor area, and the ending are all full-throttle, palm sweating, teeth clenching, heart-racing, head-spinning sections which make this game my absolute favorite I've played so far. Congrats C.A. on such a wonderful game, I feel it will (as many critics also do) revitalize the now venerable series....who knows, maybe a sequel will be on the horizon? Cheers to a great game! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alien Isolation is the alien game we've all been waiting for. It perfectly captures the atmosphere of "Alien" made by Ridley Scott in 1979. It literally feels like I am interacting with the movie. The first thing to praise the game about is its story. Amanda Ripley is approached by a man named Christopher Samuels, who invites Amanda Ripley on an expedition to look for the Nostromo's flight recorder which might hold the key to finding her mother, Ellen Ripley. If you've seen the Alien movies then you will know that she tried to kill the Alien by blowing up the Nostromo and sending herself out into space on a tiny shuttle where she undergoes hyper-sleep. So this game takes place in between the events of "Alien" and the events of "Aliens" which is a very cool idea. So, of course, Amanda Ripley accepts Samuels offer and we find her waking up from hyper-sleep and we get to explore the Torrens spacecraft. If I had to summarize the rest of the game it would be, traveling to Sevastopol Station (the holder of the Nostromo's flight recorder), meeting a few characters, fighting loads of androids, and fighting other humans all while trying to avoid the Alien that is aboard the ship. It never really explains how the Alien got there but that is up to your interpretation. Now you may be wondering why I am not giving this a 10. It is because the Alien sometimes has broken A.I. For the most part the Alien's A.I. is great and terrifyingly clever, but 25% of the time he bugs out and either just stands in front of you doing nothing, or running the complete opposite direction from your character which is very eminent in the survival mode. But, overall, Alien: Isolation is a fantastic game that definitely takes advantage of its beautiful graphics. I'm even thinking about getting it on Xbox One, so that says something! 9/10 (Awesome) Expand

So, I would say that the game mechanics is close to perfect. Now, the writers really did not do a good job of following through the narrative in the spirit of Alien. As mentioned by other reviewers a lot of the build up breaks down in the last few hours of the game, like the producers threw out the windows "Alien" and brought back the awful "Aliens" with multiple monster bashing and repetitive blue-collar work where the exhausted player has to turn on and off switches across the stations long after the climax of the game has been reached. Other than that, the first 80% of the game are so great that its worth it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've just beat the game a few days ago and actually needed few more to think this whole experience through.

Starting with the technical side I must say I was positively surprised with its performance on my not-so-new PC. I expected I'll have to lower settings but instead, I had native resolution at Ultra details level and the game was running smoothly majority of the time. The only time it didn't were cinematics for some reason, but that's fine with me. Even cranking up AA to max values worked almost well, apart from bigger input lag so I switched back to AA off. That's all my old PC though so let's leave that there. Sounds and music are fantastic - they fit the world and atmosphere so well you get a pounding heart just by the music changing, especially that you know it adjusts to what is going on around you. Graphics - fantastic!

Technical stuff aside, time for the real cherry on top of the cake.
The Sevastopol station is so well designed it made me wonder how much time the crew spent on creating it. All the stuff laying lose around, like it was dropped in a rush and left behind, makes you really feel the station was alive and something went wrong at some stage. Attention to details and a feeling of the place being alive (at some point in the past) is simply astonishing. It's resemblance and Nostromo-like style has been presented in a fantastic way, it is so true to the original Nostromo you just can't ignore this game if you liked the original. Audio logs and computer notes of people living and working on the station help you immerse with their private lives, as well as add some background information as to what and when changed and how station's crew reacted differently to changing events.

And of course, the bad boy: the Alien. For the first time in a long, long time I've tried to survive against an enemy so deadly and menacing, I genuinely was scared with every step I made on the station knowing he's somewhere around. He does not follow routine paths. He is not stupid and easily distracted. He is an intelligent predator focused on finding and killing you. Give it no reason to be in your place and he will leave, but one false step, one loud move too much and he will be back, breathing down your neck. His patrol routes change, he seems to focus more on places he thinks you may be, be it you making a noise or sweating too much in that locker. He does random stuff like the one time he jumped into a vent when I thought it should be relatively safe to exit the locker, and even before I managed to make one step - he jumped back from the vent and - of course - killed me on spot. And that's just one of them (spoiler), the moment two start hunting you down the hell is up to a whole new level (end of spoiler). Noise-maker so that you can attract Alien away from your real position and sneak through? Wonderful idea? Well, the creature can fall for that but once he checks the device and discovers diversion, it starts to patrol the area much quicker cause it knows you're somewhere near.

The whole experience is very tense and scary, but in a positive manner. On Normal difficulty I played, the Alien was enough of a challenge to make the game challenging, yet not frustrating experience and I am easily getting angry with games. With this one? Not one time. It is well balanced.

Some things people point out as not so good:
    - saving system - I find it challenging yet not frustrating. It makes you think you're actions through before carrying them out, forces you to plan your approach, not just run around, tripping stuff, all-guns-blazing. I liked it.
    - Alien loud behavior - yes, it does a lot of noises while using vents but have you experienced the terrifying moment when you hide in a vent and he gets inside? He barely fits in and I can see why it may do so much noise. It also gives you a small chance against it but make no mistake: you need to crouch to remain silent and he is quicker than you sprinting anyway so I feel it's balanced.
    - Alien not walking on walls / ceiling: I think this could've been added, it would be so Alien-like! Yet I don't find this feature missing very disappointing.

All in all, approach to the title seems thought through and well balanced and pieced together. There is no easy way out, not one thing giving you instant advantage over Alien. Even once you pick the flame thrower up, it doesn't make you safe, not one bit. Yes, you may repel the Alien if caught with your pants down, but once it runs away, it will be back quicker than it ran away - knowing you are somewhere in the area instantly affects creature's behavior, it becomes more determined, aggressive and unpredictable. Fantastic experience!

Only one question: where's the Queen and where did the eggs come from?
Besides, is the ending a little hint for a sequel? If so, I'm buying pre-order blind.

To sum things up: this game is THE BEST Alien experience to date. Bravo! Standing ovation!

You’re not playing a badass marine with a machine gun–you’re not a moody, misunderstood loner with an endless belt feed of ammunition and a chip on your shoulder. You’re an engineer. Amanda Ripley. The fear that accompanies this search for a loved one follows you throughout the entirety of the game. It paints itself on the walls–it taps chisels into your breathing as you join Amanda in holding her breath in order to avoid detection."

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
