This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Straight Forward. The Xenomorph is my spirit animal. The first movie heralded a new outlook on the scifi genre, as well as for the horror genre. This thing has haunted me since I first experienced Alien as a kid. Everywhere I went at night, in the dark, I was extra silent, in case one lurked in the trees or around the corner. Even, under the bed. In closets. Dark sheds in the daytime.

It scared the piss out me. So much so, that I began to emulate it -short of killing people and using them for food or alive as hosts for my offspring- as a way to know thine enemy.

I've lived among human monsters, hiding in plain sight.

While there are those of you who would avoid predation in the city by keeping your keys in your fists, and only walking among street lamps, I avoided predation by those monsters by moving silently in the darkness embraced. Watching the watchers... and the watched. So, Spirit Guide.

That being said, On to Isolation.

No game or movie since the first has chilled my bones more.

The Ambiance, the music, the well-placed lighting, the all-forgotten temporary morgues... This is the game for which I've long awaited.

The game-play mechanics are simple, yet fit well with the keep-moving-or-die vibe Creative Assembly was aiming to impose upon the player. The same can be said of the crafting system, of which certain other reviews have claimed to be shallow.

It pretty much has to be, in order to keep up with the pace. Once you catch your stride in dodging the primary antagonist without feeling the need to hide in a wall locker for hours on end, and learn what it means to truly be conservative -or liberal- in the use of crafted or existing items, it becomes more of a case of Tom and Jerry, rather than ordinary cat-and-mouse. The fun is in the tricking, dodging, and outsmarting of the Xeno.

If you're good enough, quick enough, and fast enough, a well placed flashbang can be deadly for your enemies. This is Xenomordia, Signing off.

Easy one of the best horror games ever. I'm the type of person that don't get scared of horror games at all but still, Alien Isolation is very good horror game, beautiful graphics but also very well optimized, the AI of the Xenomorph in this game is a next level. Highly recommended.

    Lightning and sound:

Lighting in some areas are just perfect and for me it feels like I am some times standing in the corridors from Alien 1 and 2 and I have rely some times just stood in a corridor watching the lightning and being amazed because some times this game is just mindblowing beautiful.

The sound is up there with the best tension games right now. It makes everything so scary.
Me for once sat in an Airduct for like 5 minutes before daring to go out because just the sound of the area made it so intense.

    Graphics:

The graphics overall you can some times wish a little more off but overall the graphics are rely good and really lifts the feeling of behind stuck on a huge Space station/ship with a huge alien monster hunting you around.

    Ai:

The "humans/Androids" Ai is some what "meh" and its understanding because the AI TRULY shines when you meet the ALIEN. I have many times actually wondered if the Alien is playing with me.

Yes you heard it right, A computer game where I wonder if the AI is so smart so it play with me.
For an instance: I sit in a room pitch black with the alien on the other side of the door looking for me.
I sit in that room for maybe 5 min (irl) just waiting and listening.

After 5 min is gone I move and come out in the corridor, I move like 10 feet and I get attacked from the alien HIDING IN AN AIRDUCT ! Just so he can jump out in my way and finish me of with a claw to the face.

With that said you will MANY TIMES in this game have some REALLY Cat and mouse hunts in this game.
You running through a corridor just to turn around to see you are not followed, Just to turn around again and realizing that the alien took a shorter route through the air duct and now stand behind you.

If I HAVE to say bad things about the game I rely have to force my self to find some.
But IF I now have to then it would be that there is a little to much humans with guns in this game and that it would have been better if they would have taken some of them away at least, together with some weapons.

Other then that this game is a masterpiece and can't wait for a sequel in Alien 2 setting or even a new movie following this game.

10/10 hands down !! Every one should get this !!
And if you planning on getting an oculus rift, GET THIS NOW !!!!

The attention to detail in this game is amazing, it's what was missing from Colonial Marines (plus the graphics they promised). So far, I am immersed, I feel like I am in the living, breathing universe that was of the 1979 "Alien" movie.

The game has the most gorgeous graphic technically and a 50+ average fps on not-too-old computers, which is surprising for a Total War game studio, not to mention the rich and exact feeling of the atmosphere of the first Alien film, which is among those 1970s defining phenomenal films. Unscripted events abound in this game. Whether it's the alien hunting you, or you battling it out with other survivors or the alien turning those same survivors into kibble thanks to a confrontation you engineered.....it's simply amazing. And scary. Holy hell is it scary.
People who claim its too frustrating or that they died too many times....this isn't the genre for you. And you're not playing properly. Sorry. You're not. I've died. But never to the point that it's frustrating. Careful, considered gameplay pays off.
People who whinge that you can't fight back.....sorry, you're wrong too. Unless shooting, braining, or burning androids and human adversaries doesn't count. It's simply that you need to consider whether the risk is worth that approach. And understanding that Amanda Ripley is not "Master Chief."
The AI does not cheat. The AI simply doesn't follow set routines. If you make noise, odds are it will investigate. If there's no reason to think you couldn't have left a corner of the map, that SOB will look for you with will and a purpose. You just need to figure a way out.
The length is fine. Could it have been trimmed a little? Sure. But it's never tedious. And frankly, I enjoyed every minute...every image..every sound. It's like you're in the flipping Alien universe. All that's missing are the smells.
Replayability? Yep. Survivor mode is awesome for a quick fix. They'll be adding to it as part of the season pass (yes, season passes are separate discussion but I think this one will be worth it). And even with the campaign, understand that outside of a few set events the alien will never be in the same place, never act exactly the same way every time you play. Items are in different locations. There are not guarantees. Hell, I'll play again to see just how far I can get without dying.
If you're a fan of the franchise or horror games, period, you need to pick this up.

And it's mostly down to the incredible soundscape of the game; it's rarely what you see that gets the adrenaline pumping, but all the little noises around you. Or when your tracker suddenly pings and you don't know why....

Speaking of adrenaline rushes, I genuinely think this game should carry some sort of health warning. No film I've ever watched, or game I've ever played, or indeed any extreme sport I've ever tried, has kept me in such a constant heightened state. I'm not a youngster any more and I stopped playing after an hour or so in the couple of sessions I've played as I was actually a little worried that being in such a state for so long probably wasn't doing my heart any favours. Especially the first time the alien found me and I ran and hid in a cupboard, only for it to suddenly rip the door off just as I thought I'd escaped....

One last point on the specs. I was stunned to find that it runs beautifully on my ageing gaming rig with all the setting at max. I didn't think my poor old Phenom II 965 and Radeon 6970 would ever be able to run a AAA game at max again, but this looks absolutely stunning and the frame rate never noticeably drops.

If you're looking for a shooter then you will be disappointed. This isn't colonial marines (thank god). The game is all about survival - sneaking around, crafting weapons/devices and dealing with your enemies in the smartest way possible. The shooting mechanics are cumbersome and difficult to get to grips with. You have to hold the right mouse button just to bring your weapon up and, with the revolver for example, you have to hold the reload button while you fill each chamber in turn. Shooting is to be avoided if possible. It's stressful. Reloading is stressful. It fit's with the style of the game beautifully because in Alien Isolation EVERYTHING is stressful!

You will spend most of your time hidden under desks, in lockers, behind crates, basically anywhere you can. The xenomoprh is, for all intents and purposes, invulnerable to the assortment of weapons/devices that you can find/craft and he scurries around in the air vents until something makes a noise and draws him out. You can use this to your advantage, making a racket to attract the alien and then hiding in a locker until he has finished off your human enemies.

The Alien's constant presence will turn you into a paranoid mess. You'll freeze when you knock a chair over, desperately scan the room for a place to hide in case he heard you. Catching a glimpse of him you might be tempted to run but flight is rarely the answer and the sound of him scurrying up behind you will genuinely send a shiver down your spine. It's terrifying stuff. The AI seems to be unscripted for the most part so each encounter will play out differently as you try to outwit the xenomorph with distractions and by hiding.

So, the gameplay is great (assuming you want to be scared crapless) and the game looks stunning too. The lighting effects combine with the volumetric mist/smoke to create a truly immersive environment. I particularly like the shadows cast by debris floating outside the space-station's windows. The depth of field effects when using the sonar are a lovely touch - you can focus on the scanner or on your environment, but not both.

After 5ish hours of gameplay I'm enjoying the story, though there isn't much variety in the level design and you will backtrack through the same areas multiple times. The puzzles are fairly straightforward but everything has that "futuristic circa 1979" feel which is true to the films. The save system is in keeping with the feel of the game - you have to use your ID card on payphones dotted around the map. The process takes a few seconds to complete, during which time you can look around, frantically in case an enemy is creeping up on you.

All in all, Alien Isolation is a great game if you're a fan of the films/the genre but don't expect it to be something it isn't.

Gorgeous visuals, beautiful lighting effects, an inspired retro science-fi artistic design. countless nods to the original Alien movie and a killer soundtrack will give you the impression that you are actually playing a sequel to the movie. The star of the game. the Alien, is every bit as cunning and devious as the one encountered by the Nostromo crew, a terrifying alpha predator from whom you have to run if you want to stay alive. I found this game to be a perfectly paced mix of exploration, stealth and combat (yes, you can confront foes other than the Alien, if you wish or if you must). And there are puzzles to solve, doors to hack (through a number of cute mini-games) and a crafting system. But you'll have to figure things mostly by yourself, as the game doesn't take you by the hand. The checkpoint (and auto) save feature only adds to the tension: there are times when reaching a save checkpoint really feels like an accomplishment.

To sum it up: this game is an absolute must have for any fan of the Alien franchise, but could definitively stand on its own as a thrilling science-fi horror masterpiece.

To stand a chance at survival, you will have to use every bit of what you learn throughout the game and think outside the box more often than not. The story here is well written, and I found myself fully immersed in the claustrophobic environment Alien: Isolation provides.

The visuals are well done (even if it appears every character is sweating in the same places on their faces the whole time), and the core mechanics of the game are easy to comprehend and intuitive. For me personally, the game's sound is what makes this title shine. I absolutely recommend playing with headphones if you have a decent pair because within the first half an hour to an hour, I found myself jumping at things that I probably wouldn't have otherwise and the timing of the sound effects and minimalist music is almost flawlessly weaved together in a way that proves most unsettling. The lighting is also executed in a manner that causes heart pounding moments that are again woven in with well timed sound effects and musical pieces.

Once the Alien (and other threats) make its / their presence known, this game really takes off, as does your heart rate. It is not for the faint of heart. I also recommend playing the game at its hardest difficulty right from the start because it really does become that much more terrifying, and I've always believed that if you play at the hardest setting from the beginning, there is nothing to compare it to and you will find ways to adapt. The game takes cues from other games such as Amnesia and Outlast in the "hiding" mechanic, but it works even better than those games for the most part. I also got Bioshock vibes from the station as I'd compare it to Rapture in terms of how the ship itself feels.

The only thing preventing this game from earning a perfect score, oddly for me at least, echoes something I've read elsewhere and that is it is a tad too long. Towards the end of your time on this ship that makes the Ishamura look like a space paradise, the scares do tend to become less intense because you've dealt with them for so long. However, the varied enemies (of which there are more than a handful) does keep it somewhat fresh up until that point. Had they shaved about an hour or so off of the entire thing, it would have been perfect. Having said that, it's a small complaint to say the game is too much of a good thing because even then, it's not like I felt as though the game wore out its welcome. The scares just weren't as panic inducing as they were earlier and perhaps that's a good thing anyway because there are plenty to be had.

Running and gunning is not the primary object of this game. Doing either of those things can and will cause you to start over from your last save point. Dying in this game happens often, but it never felt frustrating for me. The bottom line here though is this is the Aliens game fans have been waiting for. I never was a true fan of the films, but that's a testament to how good this game truly is. If you enjoy the series, survival horror, space related games, or even stealth games, then this should be on your list of must have titles for this year. With DLC, multiple play styles and modes to keep things truly fresh, the game does indeed have tremendous replay value as well. For me, the whole experience was incredible and "Isolation" is a truly fitting title and I hope its success allows them to give fans more in the future.

A bold concept of something else other than mindlles first person shooter ever year again and again.

The human and androids NPC's are not that good compared to the Alien ( which is the real star) but they create a mix of situations that can be considered a live stealth puzzle, which helps to build up tension and create multiple ways of advancing trough the campaign.

All in all if you like horror games and alien this is a masterpiece you should have at home.
It is not a easy game though and there is no hand-holding ( like some mixed reviews pointed out).

Alien Isolation has done an amazing job at sucking me in, this game is intense and visually stunning and it does and incredible job of recreating the look and the feel of the first movie. It's like being able to experience the first Alien movie all over again, with the added terror of not being able to glance away from the screen.

Huge congrats to the developers for nailing this. I would say people who voted this a 0 (The user Howard for example) are mentally deficient internet trolls.

I have played the majority of the library and graphically this is a true masterpiece. Even in loading the game you can tell there is something significant about it with the retro 1980s VHS static. Walking around the ship in the beginning I felt like I was literally in the Ridley Scott film and I was very impressed with the detail of ambiance put into the game.

Additionally, my highest recommendation is to play this with headphones on turned up to an intimidating level. The booms and thuds of traversing through the environments will awaken your instinctual senses like it was created to do.

The sound design is superior, the environments are surreal and I was very impressed with the AI in this game. I admit they are not perfect (a few times I was crouched in plain sight with no response); however, I was very impressed that the AI never followed a set pattern and was very unpredictable. A few times after dying I would reload my last save and the AI was not only doing different things; they would sometimes arrive from different directions and rooms than previous. Having the AI open a door right before I was about to walk through is exhilarating when I was able to spontaneously hide and get away with being detected.

Just like every game, it also has its flaws. A few times the in-game dialogue did not match up with the character speaking, not just a little, the mouth would be closed when dialogue was being said. At times they looked like E.T. trying to say "I'll be right here." Additionally, there were times that I wanted to pick up a weapon an enemy AI was using against me and I was unable to. I assume I can later in the game; but, at the moment it doesn't make any sense that Amanda would take their ammo and not their weapon.

Overall, it is a very solid game. If you are looking for a true AAA game for next-gen this is it. There are a lot of good looking games; but, this one seems to be the defining moment that indicates we are in the next-gen era. The graphics, sound, AI, voice-acting (including Sigourney Weaver), and overall ambiance of the game is truly breath-taking (you will literally hold your own breath under pressure).

    Go play!

This game is a sublime masterpiece, by fans, for fans. Every pixel just *aches* with the sheer love and care taken by Creative Assembly to realize the Alien universe. The gameplay may not be for all, it is a survival horror where you are largely unarmed, but it is worth it even if you don't, just to experience this marvel. As an Alien fan, this is a must buy, you must experience this game's environment and meet the xenomorph it portrays, even if only for a short while.

This is the sort of game we as gamers have been missing out on between all the nickel-and-dime AAA carbon copies and half-done indie games, this is how games should be. OK, the genre might be one you hate, and fair enough, but if you yearn for games made by decent folks who care about their work, do not deny yourself at least a try.

An older gamer who grew up on 2600/C64 and can remember having conversations about the "Alien" in seventh grade? Why I'd give this game a 10 to that gentleman or lady and highly reccommend it. The actual gameplay is basic survival horror, turn this on so that this opens, so you can go turn this on. This game however is not about the gameplay. Comparing this to a haunted house is a better frame of reference then comparing it to Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space. This game is about enviroment, tone, and atmosphere. I have personally enjoyed it and appreciate what the developers have put into it. The game experience it delivers is unique and truly does capture the "Feel" of the orginal film. I really want to emphasize the word "feel". There are games more terrorfying out. The 20 minute silent hill demo was creepy as hell. Alien: Isolation delivers a unique "feel" of terror. Moments like calling a transit and waiting in a corner somewhere, hiding, looking back and forth for the Alien to pop out are awesome. Really enjoy the game, dont expect it to be a huge hit, love it regardless. Expand

I haven't played such a nightmarish experience in a long time. And that's a good thing. When you think the nightmare is over you are thrown into another one. It took me 22 hours to get through the campaign on hard. The difficulty is perfectly balanced. As long as you take your time and proceed carefully you should be fine most of the time.

The gameplay mostly consists of you sneaking, staying quiet, hacking, crafting items to distract enemies or impair them. The further you proceed on your different missions you will find upgrades for your tools that will allow you to access areas you earlier couldn't. You will also get your hands on upgrades for your make shift weapons. Lethal weapons will eventually become part of your inventory but it's recommended to avoid using them but the further you get in the game the more lethal situations will become and they will come in handy. You can backtrack if you want to, or explore areas that are not part of the current mission. If you do you might find secret audio logs, items and easter eggs. So the game never feels very linear but instead quite free which I haven't seen since early days of Resident Evil. Of course there's always imminent danger that waits for you to make a mistake. It's even more similar in the way that you have to save your game at save stations, but don't worry, you don't need an ink ribbon. However, the game doesn't pause when you save and it takes a while for the station to load up. Nor does the game pause when you bring up your inventory and crafting system, which is reminiscent of Dead Space.

The story is good and quite straight forward, and it does contain twists and turns that did make me jump with excitement and surprise. However I wish that the conclusion would have been more satisfying. The voice acting is solid but the lipsyncing is quite poor. Especially when it's in-game and not a cut-scene.

The game itself is very well built. At no time did I experience any performance loss, crashes or game glitches that interfered with the gameplay. During my long playthrough I only noticed one or two oddity not even worth mentioning. I played the game on ultra settings and the visuals are very impressive when it comes to lights and shadows. There so many details in the environment in this game that it's amazing. At a closer inspection though, some low-res textures can be found but overall an incredible looking game.
The sound design is perfect, it re-creates and expand upon all the sounds and music from the movie Alien that it makes you feel like you really are in that universe.
The physics are great with your body reacting to everything around you in the environment, you might for example accidentally kick something on the floor and cause a loud noise or tip over furniture etc.

The option menu is well fleshed out with many different visual settings, including FOV.

The different mechanics like crafting, hacking, using tools and weapons is very intuitive. For example when entering a passcode you use your numpad, or when re-loading a weapon you must hold R to reload a full magazine, if you just press R once it will only load one bullet for example. Computer interfaces requires you to use your keyboard to navigate, like if there are no mouses which add to the push button feel of the 70s.

I was worried that the alien's "AI" would fail and break the game, but I'm glad to have been proven wrong. Not at any time did I see the alien glitch out or do something stupid. It really is a ruthless killer that requires your respect. The same goes for the humans and the androids. The humans work together as teams and if they are hostile you better avoid them or distract them to get to where you need to go. The androids are lethal if they catch you, they can't run but they do walk steadily towards you like a terminator.

Conclusion: While it does borrow a lot from other games in the terms of gameplay mechanics, this survival horror game combines old school gameplay with an extremely impressive, dynamic enemy, incredible visual and sound design and a thrilling story in full blown Alien spirit. It's a truly unique experience. If you are a fan, don't miss out on Amanda Ripley's struggle for survival and quest to find the truth..

The story is utterly compelling primarily being based off the original Alien but also taking cues from Aliens, Alien 3 and the more recent Prometheus. You genuinely feel like you have entered this universe, which is a testtment to the writer Dan Abnett.

The gameplay is ferociously difficult (I'll be honest, I had to switch down from Medium to Easy), but you do become better as you play. It is also varied, you will go through some utterly spine chilling moments against the alien, but then are giving space to breathe with some pauses with humans or simply puzzles to resolve. At its best this game is the scariest thing I've ever played.

Before buying I was nervous from the negative IGN review about level re-use and backtracking, but this is a complete red herring. You do re-visit some areas but the environment has changed and you can access different areas. How this can be seen as a negative is utterly beyond me. The levels you play are all incredibly rich and varied, not once did I feel fed up of returning to an area. Even in classics such as System Shock 2 it was sometimes tedious to go back, not here.

Visually its spectacular and performed well on my Radeon 7850 at ultra settings. It is hard to explain without actually playing it how effectlvely they capture the Alien universe. For me this has raised the visual standard for other games. The lighting is particularly impressive.

Alien fans will usually look back to AvP1 and AvP2 on the PC as being the high water mark for games, this is finally a worthy successor to these games.

The bad: can be a bit difficult (although you shouldn't feel shame in playing on easy if needed). Can be a bit stressful (I couldn't play Amnesia because of this, but I can this game). There is no hand-holding, you have a map with markers, but a lot of times you have to think to find your way (it's intentional and well done though). Cinematics are sometimes a bit lacking in the visual department. Character animations are not the best.
If you are an Alien fan you will feel blessed, specially halfway through when the story starts to unfold. Thank you Creative Assembly for staying true to the franchise and thank you Sega for making it possible. /buttlicking ;)

"Alien: Isolation" is a delight for Alien and horror games fans alike. In the middle of an industry filled with FPS, which the franchise got into before in the troubled "Alien: Colonial Marines", Isolation takes away the action-powered gameplay and the irrelevancy the three playable characters had in "Alien vs. Predator" and "Colonial Marines" and keeps real to the survival-horror genre, following the examples of "Amnesia" and "Outlast."

Most of the story, just like many first-person games, is told by Amanda Ripley's eyes, save for some cutscenes. As the game progresses, you get involved in the mysteries concerning the Sevastopol, its crew and survivors, and Amanda's mother fate. You get anxious and nervous every time you see the alien, but the fear easily goes away once you get the flamethrower. You're going to want to finish the game fast, since there are many long and tedious objectives, but you'll also get nervous and exhilarated when the alien shows up and when other climax scenes occur. The story also serves as an entree to newcomers, and also a reminder for enthusiasts to watch the movies.

Following horror games should follow Alien's example and create an involving atmosphere and a sense of anticipation. The Creative Assembly managed to redeem the franchise in video games and also serves as an example for other games. Alien: Isolation was definitely the biggest surprise of 2014 and will always be an unforgettable experience.

I perceive the dip this causes in the suspense and pacing of the game to be totally intentional by the devs.
By doing this the player's attention span and edginess lowers quite a bit, almost to the point of feeling empowered. This is where the brilliance shines, because just at the moment where you start feeling safe and strong, the game just tears you a new hole, and you can't even be mad about it, because you just blew your old one... If you like the atmosphere of the original film, don't mind investing a lot of time in a game, and dealing with some slow parts in the game, GO AND GET THIS GAME, it is awesome! And people talking about the Alien A.I. being unfair? I call hogwash! I finished the entire game without dying ONCE (my third playthrough) And no, you can't just learn the Alien's patterns, because it doesn't have any scripted patterns, it reacts to YOUR behaviour. AWESOME GAME 10/10!

The game that all Alien fans needed. ( Not IGN )
In my opinion its like a mix of BioShock with Amnesia.
The length of the game is also very good, the stealth and controls are very fluid.
The best is probably the sound. Its very well done and it really brings that Alien felling.
Its the best alien game of the modern era.

You always have a goal and it's never getting boring. You really feel like beeing a part of the good old movies!

And be prepared, the encounters you will face are tough bastards and they have surprised me many times. But thats the challenge and i love it. Between the thrilling parts you have time to scavenge the station and looking for supplies, before you go back to your mission.

-Graphics are nice, gameplay is smooth, no noticable technical faults so far. (However I have heard others have had issues, I suggest checking the forums before and after purchase if you experience any)

    Cons
-Game can be frustrating, enemies might block a door and decide to just not leave, Alien might find you despite you not really doing anything to really put yourself in that situation, just because of bad luck. Another example is sometimes the Alien is magic and literally in two different spots at once, like you see him drooling and look at another vent and he is drooling from that one too, and if you go under either he spawns there and kills you.
-AI sometimes will be a derp. Usually it's really good, and if it hears you or such it will come running, it cuts you off, etc, but every once in a while it will just like look directly at you 3 feet away and just miss you. This is rare, but it really breaks immersion when the AI does things like this.
-Lack of features to take advantage of next gen hardware/PCs, while it looks great as is, it pretty much looks the exact same across everything.

Issues I hear but so far don't agree with
-Save points? I was heard they were terrible, they are actaully really good, not too numerous and not too rare. If you pay attention you rarely lose much if any progress. They skip save points and complain when they get set back.
-Tedious gameplay due to it being stretched out?.The game actually seems to be the perfect length, it has not gotten tedious to me and I am more than half way through now. Plus I can do the short missions and DLC afterwards which is a perfect length.

    8/10
Understanding the Alien universe is a big help in enjoying this game, but it achieves what it aims to do fairly well. I am happy with my purchase.

This has to be one of the most pleasant surprises in gaming in the past few years. I'll start by saying I'm NOT a fan of horror games. But I truly enjoyed this game.

    The positives:

    1. The Engine. Nobody seems to mention this. The engine is amazing, I don't know what it is, but the graphics are amazing while maxed with high FPS on my 680. Compared to Shadow of Mordor that just came out, which looks noticeably worse but with a bad FPS. Alien: Isolation has excellent graphics AND an excellent engine.

    2. The gameplay. This is a STEALTH GAME. If that turns you off, then you won't enjoy Alien: Isolation. The character is NOT a gung ho violent person. It says it a million times in loading screen tips. You aren't meant to be violent, and are actively punished for it. This is reflected in the fact it takes her ages to aim the revolver, and still has crap aim with it after you let it aim. There are also consequences I won't mention for firing your weapons. They're best viewed as tools, but only equally useful as your other tools. The entire game plays sort of like a Deus Ex Human Revolution stealth sequence, but with huge penalties for getting caught. If that doesn't sound appealing, then this game isn't your cup of tea.

    3. The Atmosphere. Holy. Crap. The lighting, the props, the sound, the pacing, all come together to create an adrenaline pumping experience that'll leave you feeling energized, if you let yourself become immersed. This game is meant to be played in long sessions without distractions. When you get through a particularly harrowing sequence, the relief and satisfaction is real. The props themselves deserve huge amounts of credit. You can tell that the artists worked relentlessly to bring us Alien as it was originally imagined. Each prop oozes with style, and you can tell they're all labors of love. The textures are so perfect, it feels like you can reach out and touch the cheap 70s era yellow stained plastic. The computer/device monitors you encounter are all a joy to look at and interact with. And the sound. With Jeff Van Dyk on board it's to be expected, but this game has some of the best music and sound design I've heard in a long time. Major props to those guys. There are so many OH **** moments that occur, and when in retrospect you realize they weren't even scripted, you go OH **** again. Unlike other horror games with scripted events around every corner, many of the things that make you jump or terrified are NOT scripted and are completely organic. Whoever was behind the design in this game deserves a medal. It's a true cinematic experience. This is innovation, folks. We can only hope other games copy this dynamic style of storytelling.

    4. It's HARD! Which is refreshing considering most games today hold your hand. You're going to die a lot in this game. Sometimes it feels cheap when you die, but with patience I was able to plan out and get through every sequence. Sometimes I got stuck in places due to the objective not being in a clear cut location, but I don't think having to explore is necessarily a con. Like I said, this game does NOT hold your hand. It gives you a few tools you need to survive, and leaves it up to you to figure out how to manipulate and exploit the world and tools. That discovery of all the new ways you can get through places is a true joy.

    Time for the negatives.

    1. Lack of anti aliasing and options. I spent a good half hour setting up the graphics of this game through my videocard. The lack of anti aliasing and field of view beyond 74 is really annoying. In fact, I find it outright ridiculous that the game defaults to 47~ FOV. That's downright unacceptable. When you crank it up to 74 however, it is acceptable. I just wish it went to 90.

    2. Frustrating segments. Like I said, this game is HARD and can get pretty god damn frustrating when you lose your patience. With adrenaline flowing it's sometimes hard to sit back and examine a situation and go through it methodically. I can't really knock the game for this too much though, because I personally enjoy hard games and overcoming obstacles. If you don't like hard, then be weary. Think of it like Dark Souls. It's about that level of unforgiving, except you get a lot more save points.

    3. Voice acting is a but crappy sometimes, but most of the time you don't notice it. The only time it was cringe worthy was around the beginning. I wish they got a better actor for Ripley.

    Conclusion:

If you enjoy hard games, this game is for you. If you are easily immersed in games and love getting sucked into a game world, this is for you. If you enjoy stealth games, this is for you. Especially if you love the Alien franchise.

If you're a gung ho cowadoody player, like that idiot IGN reviewer who gave this a 5.9, and black ops a 9, then this game isn't for you. If you're impatient, or want something light and mindless, then this game isn't for you.

Happy hunting, and damn I hope games of this quality continue to be released

This is the Alien game that all the fans were waiting from years.
If you don'l like slow pacing, and the first alien movie, this game is CLEARLY NOT for you.

Shame on IGN and Gamespot, this is really sad.

The most important thing to understand about this new entry into the series is it's radical shift in gameplay design from those of which were, by an large, iterations on the same gameplay first experienced Doom. And it was with no surprise that the franchise was going to take this well trodden path as the sequel to the original film in the series was John Carmack's main inspiration in developing Doom.

By diagnosing the main problem with one of videogames most popular genres The Creative Assembly have opted to make the player feel as vulnerable as possible in order to instil a genuine sense of dread and tension throughout the game. The game doesn't allow players to horde backpacks full of guns and ammo but instead forces you to use any meagre gadget you can concoct in order to distract your enemies as opposed to mowing them down with little cost to your resources or safety. There are guns introduced later in the game and surprise surprise here in lies one of the games strange inconsistencies with the Alien cannon and potential flaws in it's gameplay.

After a slow burn introduction to the Sevastopol Station, a crumbling space port in it's last stages of being decommissioned, the game starts out incredibly reminiscent of Bioshock allowing the player to venture in at their own pace discovering computers containing personal logs by Sevastopol inhabitants and audio recordings that help to organically deliver the narrative element of the game. Once further into the Sevastopol and the main elements have been introduced the gameplay really takes off with the Alien and other enemies all working together to create a wonderfully organic emergent gameplay style that is never scripted and always seems unique throughout repeat playthroughs. And repeat playthroughs of invidual missions will become commonplace to even the most seasoned and skilled players as The Creative Assembly have done something truly amazing with the AI of it's titular enemy by designing it to work with heightened sensors that enable it to respond dynamically to sound and situations as opposed to being moved on predetermined paths with basic AI programming. In short this game is **** HARD!

The look and feel of the game is stunning, albeit it with a minimal amount of dodgy cutscenes, poor human facial animations and shader aliasing problems, as the lighting and graphical fidelity convinces you that you are in world of Alien, one of cinemas most stunning and meticulously designed films. The Alien's design and animations are far beyond anything I've seen in any game and it's clear where Sega have really channelled their money opting, with minor cost to less vital parts of the game, to really bring the Alien to life.

However there are some problems with the game, although minimal, and these are down in large part to the second half of this massive game. When I say massive I can tell you it must have taken me over 25 hours to complete the game on Normal difficulty on a very explorative playthrough and once the game reached the 15 hour mark for me, which would have been an ample length for a game of this kind, the Alien "goes on vacation" for the 3rd quarter of the game leaving you pining for it's return. Once the game finds itself without an Alien you are left to contend with the stations second most deadly entity, the Androids, who prove to be somewhat less fulfilling. The game also chooses to ignore some vital elements of the Alien's lifecycle introduced by James Cameron in the second movie which I feel are to it's detriment.

On the whole Alien: Isolation is one of the most tense and claustrophobic horror stealth games I've ever experienced and I heartily recommend to it to any and all that have even the slightest interest in horror and sci-fiction. Well done CA the Alien is finally back in town!

Absolutely gorgeous, an instante classic. I just finished it and already put it among my favourite games of all time.
You really need to get into the game's mechanics, and if that happens (not a game for everybody I guess) you'll be simply sucked in till the end.
Only downsides are the character's face expressions and a slightly rough antialiasing, that contrast a bit with the otherwise

A excellent horror game and the best Alien game to date, fantastic graphics and runs very well indeed. Finally a Alien game we can be proud of, hopefully this new IP for Creative Assembly will spawn a series that we can get our teeth into.

By far the best Alien game created (not a lot of competition though) and i think it's the best game of 2014. It's a must have for any player. Just make sure to go through the main campain in hard difficulty at least, to be delighted by pure fear. Expand

It's probably the best first person survival horror game EVER. It's very tense, extremely frightening, looks gorgeous, sounds beautifully, and it will make truly feel the dread and danger of being hunted by a 7 ft tall alien killing machine. Thirty five years have passed since Alien, and now it feels fresher than ever.-

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow! I must say that I'd never expect the creators of Total War to make such a masterpiece in such a genre! Alien Isolation is indeed a true Alien game and it completely surpasses its predecessor in every field! The story is extremely loyal to the original Ridley Scott movie, Alien (1979) starring Sigourney Weaver as Amanda Ripley who turns out to be the very last survivor of the Torrens as go farther in the game! Creative Assembly has undoubtedly succeeded in creating a Survival-Survival-Survival-Horror game!!! It's all about survival! It's true survival! You'll find it reasonably difficult to gather ammunitions. Ammunition is pretty limited (I won't say extremely, because it's still enough to get rid of a good number of the bad-ass androids-in-orange which aren't vulnerable to EMPs!). This is not Dead Space! You most probably will prefer to walk under shadows rather than making a mess around! Everyone, Everything in this game has got keen ears! Shoot a bullet and everyone will come to find you! The Alien on the other hand is a totally different hostile! the most intelligent and the toughest enemy you could ever have is the Alien itself! It can get into the vents above you, in the ceiling and surprise you in a very bad time! It's undefeatable! When spotted you won't be able to move farther than a few meters, it'll get you! Whatever it takes, it'll get you! So creeping slowly on the ground is way safer than running quickly from room to room!
Play it! Save it a lot! Enjoy! Hide! It's all survival! It's all survival!

Best game I've played in a long time. The atmosphere reminds me of the old System Shock 1/2, and is really immersive. The sound is so important and you are constantly listening for anything that can alert you to things around you. Looks superb and runs great too. It's one of the best games I've ever played. Atmosphere of fear and hopelessness is overwhelming. You can't defeat your enemy in combat, so you have to avoid the Alien for all costs. You can also feel the climate of first Alien movie in every way. Definitely the best game with Alien in the lead role since old AvP 2 game from 2001. If you're a fan of Alien, this game is a must!

This game makes you crawl like a goddamn worm, in constant fear of being squashed. I was scared to leave the closet I was hiding in, because the monster was somewhere out there. [Dec 2014, p.68]

The Creative Assembly’s game, however, is cooked; left to boil so long it loses all flavor and texture. For 10 hours, Isolation is one of the best horror games ever made, until a second, poorly made game bursts out of its heart.

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
