So, I would say that the game mechanics is close to perfect. Now, the writers really did not do a good job of following through the narrative in the spirit of Alien. As mentioned by other reviewers a lot of the build up breaks down in the last few hours of the game, like the producers threw out the windows "Alien" and brought back the awful "Aliens" with multiple monster bashing and repetitive blue-collar work where the exhausted player has to turn on and off switches across the stations long after the climax of the game has been reached. Other than that, the first 80% of the game are so great that its worth it. Expand

Even though developers seemed to aim to provide the similar experience, two important differences stick out. First, you will achieve little or nothing at all in AI by deploying offensive playing only. In another words, you cannot shoot your way out of the problem in this game. And, second there is higher degree of exploration freedom offered to the player, extending their operational area beyond just linear corridor. I picked those two examples of old games because; my perception of AI was that it will be similar experience. As it turns out, AI offers more, although some of the additional game mechanics may not have been done well enough to be considered a value. Before listing the weak part of the game, I would say that game is very true to the original Alien movie, which I think is the other main goal developers try to achieve. First, the environment is incredibly well done and detailed. This makes it very immersive, and invites exploration. Second, the character animations are superb and on level one would expect for game in 2014. Game is something between sandbox and linear action. It is goal driven, which is consistently changing based on the story development, nevertheless, it is still possible to venture outside the forward path and trace back your steps, or just explore area you missed before. Here is where one of the negative aspects of the game comes out. As mentioned before, the environment is incredibly detailed and offers multiple level of exploration. The problem is alien. Yes, this game is about Aliens and their presence is absolutely required, but the issue is that at one point in the game, Alien is constantly above your head, frequently making trips down to the floor to seek and destroy. This means that player will spend a lot of time hiding in the closet. Literally! This off course turns the experience into cat and mouse game, which I think is overbearing and distracting of the wonderful other experiences player, could have had. Devs try to mitigate this by introducing even lower difficulty settings where Alien spends more time dwelling in the sealing, and less on the floor where it directly impacts the player, but the essence still remains the same. What devs could have done instead is create oasis of different experience, such as humanoid opponents without Aliens or different level of challenges. The problem is that the game is not bad by any means; the problem is that at some points, it is very easy to quit playing because the joy diminishes quicker then what new level or task can provide. In the worst case, I have heard and nearly experience myself rage quitting, just because try to replay 20minutes of game over and over, tends to get very annoying, especially since there are more fun alternatives. That being said, and without the obvious Alien “stalker” issue, this could have been game of the year candidate. I really like the lack of offensive ability at most points through the game as well as limited save ability, but as said, the experience of leaving the movie is overtaken by experience of hiding. From my standpoint: Graphics =9 (with sweetfx with very little effort), Map and levels = 9, Game play = 7, Animations and movies = 9, Reparability = 6.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game, is truly outstanding, the mechanics, gameplay, and the atmosphere, overall, it was epic. Let me start a review on the gameplay.

The mechanics are very simple yet sometimes, it's kinda hard but not that hard. The crafting is useful for 'heavy situation' and the movement of the character is smooth.

The story is beautiful also, it gives a nostalgic effect when you watched it's film, the tense, the character, the survival, everything about it. No wonder I got few nightmares when I encounter 'black' creatures like insect or animals. However, the story is so long that you've wasted enough hours to play but if you're a big fan of Alien, you can finish this game in no time.

The graphic is amazing, the aliens, the character, the androids, everything about it. Last..

The creatures... Gosh, the creatures are magnificent, I remember one time when I was kid, I had a huge nightmare about this monster when I grew big and played this game, the nightmare, came back to my life again. Once you encountered this creature, I'm sure you're gonna stay in the lockers, vents, or anything that the creature won't find you and pray that the monster won't eat you, seriously..

This game.... Is truly amazing. I can't find the perfect word for it but I'm sure, you'll enjoy this game but be warned... Don't play this at night, that's all :)

IT IS JUST SO GOOOOD. Nothing else in the series made me feel original aliens vibe so well. The visuals, the music and sound design. If you like this franchise then you have to play it. The fact how scary and fun at the same time this game can be is another topic.

One day, Amanda finds out that Sevastopol ship hold Black Box from Nostromo. She goes there to discover the truth about her mother. When she reaches on Sevastopol, turns out that something dangerous is on a board.

All the gameplay is about hide and seek. We try to avoid alien becouse even if we're well armed, we still don't have a chance to fight alien back. But it's good. We can feel that horror what Ellen Ripley did, empathize in climate of an amazing first alien movie.

All of it is packed in one big gift for "alien" fans. Sometimes we can even hear music from the movie. For me it is a Alien game i was always waiting for.

We've all been waiting for years for that one Alien themed game, that would actually respect the original movie. True, we've got Aliens vs predator games, as well as Aliens: Colonial Marines, but none of them captured the atmosphere of the first Alien movie from 1979, and made you afraid of the xenomorph. Is Alien: Isolation that game?

True, we've got Aliens vs predator games, as well as Aliens: Colonial Marines, but none of them captured the atmosphere of the first Alien movie from 1979, and made you afraid of the xenomorph. Is Alien: Isolation that game?

The story follows Amanda, the daughter of Ripley, as she tries to find out what happened to her mother. The game takes place on a station in space, called Sevastopol, located in relative proximity to where Ripley disappeared. Prior to Amanda coming to Sevastopol, a xenomorph is brought to the station by another ship, and starts killing people. The station looks great, shading, textures, art direction, it's all there, and it sounds great too, very faithful to the original movie. As Amanda, you need to survive, as well as to find any clues about Ripley, and the Nostromo ship. The main gameplay mechanic is avoiding, hiding, or running from the xenomorph. This is done well for the most part, the xenomorph is not constantly present, but when it is, it really puts you under pressure. In addition to the xenomorph, there are humans, as well as androids, in your way. Androids are slow, but strong, and humans are weak, but carry guns. If you make too much noise while dealing with those, the xenomorph will appear from the vents. You can use this as an advantage, to get rid of your opposition, or it can turn against you. You may also craft and use certain gadgets, as well as weapons, to help with such encounters, although the xenomorph can not be killed, just repelled. It's a good balance of stealth and occasional action, and if the difficulty is set right, the game won't be unfair, or frustrating.

The game isn't perfect, though. Menus are a bit clunky, there is a small number of occasions set up so that the stacks are really against you. The game falls apart a little bit in the last third, as the encounters start to drag on, and there's a lot of backtracking. There are some questionable story decisions towards the end as well, and the ending isn't satisfying.

To sum it up, Alien: Isolation is the game we've been waiting for, a true Alien themed survival horror, that does its best to recreate the feel of the first movie. It's not perfect, but it's a must play for every Alien fan.

I would only wish that the sound would be a little more present at some later parts of the game, in the first sections it's beautiful.

I also really enjoyed the gameplay and pacing during the first half of the game. The hiding mechanics are nice, AI of the Alien is really nice, tension and horror does not just consist of jump scares in a row

The Only thing that bothered me quite a bit is that after the first half of the game, the climax of the story was reached and waited to be resolved, but the game actually went on for several hours longer without adding much of gameplay elements or story bits. These parts were still enjoyable, just felt a little bit of.

    Let's start with the good.
    -The game is visually appealing.
The environment is incredibly detailed and looks amazing especially when you out outside in SPACE everything looks really good even the same hallways that you pass a hundred times look great. I love the retro styled computers/techs and the game is really well optimized I only got a stutter once in the entire game. -Hallelujah

    -Hallelujah to the sound god.
The sound in the game was one of the best **** my crappy ears have ever heard and listened to.
The game pays close attention to the sound in the environment and every beep and noise can potentially show your location. And don't get me started on the soundtrack boyyyyy those were some amazing scores that got your heart pumping when they had to and let your heart relax when it had to.Overall loved the sound design and track of this game.Voice acting was also top notch.
Now it's time for the Meh
-Story and characters were your boring and samey as everywhere else.
Don't get me wrong I liked the character we were playing as (RIpey was it?)but she wasn't that interesting for me and she seemed like every other action/horror main character you can find everywhere. The other cast was also pretty alright from all the characters I only enjoyed like 1-2 which were really well written characters. The story was pretty average with an OK ending. To be Fair I would've probably enjoyed the story even more if I remember any of the Alien's movie's which I barely don't.
The pacing was also an incredible hassle. The story kept getting derailed every single **** time.
Oooh look you almost got to the objective where you had to go. LOL NOPE time to take a detour because some jackass put his penis on an power generator and now you need to walk all the way back to remove the penis and start the generator again.Tedious pacing which kinda ruined some parts of the game for me.
    -Gameplay (The artificial length extension)
At first the gameplay was pretty fun and exciting I gotta admit.Salvaging and saving up your resources just for the right moment was really fun. Hiding from the enemies and the object interactions were not bad and there were some times where my heart was skipping so fast when trying to Save in an area that is full with hostiles. The problem with the gameplay was that it kept getting Artificially Extended as I like to put it. Oooh look you have to go back to the same place just because you need an upgrade to this or now you need to wait for the elevator to come down and then go up.The Space Walks were visually appealing but the pace of the walk made them incredibly tedious. The constant button pressing and interacting with computers and objects was hell after the first 2 hours. The Androids were there just to fill the empty space and they got tiring really fast. The weapons were all pretty good but at the middle of the game you didn't need to try to save up resources because they were everywhere which removed most of the danger this game had to offer. No idea why they had to extend the game by making it an incredibly tedious chore to get from point A to point B.

Verdict:Good game with incredibly visuals and sounds with an alright story and Ok characters with some parts exciting gameplay and most parts boring and tedious office type gameplay. 8/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the ultimate survival horror, it is creepy, scary, visually beautiful and almost perfect, take my hands to the fire for it. I think this game and RE 7 are the real games that saved the genre. The story is good, real good. The game doesn't have any bosses, the alien is an almighty being and helps to keep the afraid and tension fueled up on the entire game. The available weapons are perfectly usable for a survival horror game. Amanda is too weak, but all is about the genre issues.
This is not an action game, it can't be compared with some of that.
All i can say is this is an awesome horror game. A great one for the fans of the survival horror or the Alien franchise, not a deception like the Mikami's last adventure, The Evil Within, that is very cuestionable when we talk about that kind of game. I can compare this game with Silent Hill 3, and I assure this is in tie wih it. The advantage that this game takes with the Team Silent's game is graphic, almostly and playable obviously, . But Silent Hill 3 takes the WOW advantage. A great game that must to be played, and this is the best part, it is in the Xbox and PC gamepass.
This game is real good, and doesn't have any defects, the nine grade is because simply and impossibly there are best games in the genre, the only one that it cames to my mind is, for sure, the crown's ultimate jewell, Silent Hill 2. But if you want to play something ike that, you can prove Alien Isolation, I'm not gonna tell that is the most creepy and scary game in the market, but is true, it's the survival horror of the decade. A very underrated jewell.

I really can not describe how beautiful the studio worked out all the elements that it really looks like in the movie. And then there is the depth of the map. It's so huge. I just love it. It is connected by various trains, lifts, shafts, stairs. Really everything you imagine. There is also a lot of equipment and weapons in the game. Like a shotgun, a revolver, a flamethrower on an alien and many more. Then grenades, flares, jammers and again many more. Then equipment for opening doors like blowtorch, hacking machine, hammer. And finally, a motion tracker to track the alien's location like in movie. You use all this for survival on the ship. Because there are many enemies on the station: Alien, androids, crazy people. But the game enriches you even with parts of the original film like finding the first alien nest. And it will also get you into the universe a few times. The game really really excited me, and I can not find a thing I'd

Alien Isolation - '' A horror game like an alien movie? ''

So when it comes to this amazing game why is it so impressive. The first thing I would like to talk about and what surprised me the most was AI (Artificial Intelligence). The best AI is alien because he is so smart that you will not cheat on him and run away so easily. He feels so sure to be a real alien because it was the most fun to play. Speaking of another bot (AI), I wouldn’t say the best unless the androids, and the worst were the people themselves because they sometimes felt very stupid. Now talking about the sound quality of the game which interested me a lot, but I don't know for me, it was the first game where I heard which side the enemy is coming from and where it is. The sound quality of the game is so great that you felt like in reality in that game, even the weapons themselves felt real. What I of course also liked was the guns they really didn’t feel so cardboard, of course there were few of them, but they were really enough. The very beginning of the game of course starts really boring especially as you are playing this game for the first time without knowing anything you can really get lost in this game and not understand what is going on here and what I do here (I really recommend watching this game practice on YouTube). In this game, I experienced a lot of pretty jump scare, maybe mostly because there was so much action going on that I wouldn’t even say counting. As a horror game it is definitely worth it. Now talking about the story itself is so simple for you in this game you don't see a lot of cutscenes and a lot of chatter. So speaking of the Cutscene itself, they felt a real cardboard about the voice of the character himself so pretty simple what was most expressed in the voice of the character was the feelings. So the game itself was inspired by the movie and really did quite well especially with the aliens and the whole technology just the story itself wasn’t very deep. The gameplay of the game itself was really fun because we were fighting, hiding from the alien, participating in most of the tense action. The design of the game itself is pretty perfect, everything feels great. Okay now speaking of the same flaws and downs according to me the most dislike of most map it was very complicated and the level design it was so very similar to that detail all sometimes very confusing as with the map. And the bombs themselves were jumping too much, and it was hard to hit the enemy because like a thrower, the bomb would bounce on it and fly somewhere.

So in my opinion according to me the whole game is a perfect alien horror game as it incorporates into the action of the whole game so worth a lot of attention and worth buying, but the game itself is annoying that there is no practice and most things are very complicated. I would dedicate myself to this game 9/10.

Finally a game of the Alien saga done as it should. A rather difficult survival horror with the xenomorph that is always ready to put real anxiety and tension. I think the only flaw of this game is the very poor interaction with the game environment but we are still at very high levels

A standout horror game from recent memory, while I admit this is nothing special to people that enjoy the genre, I think if you're not an avid horror game player, making the exception for this one will surprise you if you give it the chance.

It's not perfect but damn close. Yes there's some repetition, but they could have easily avoided that by making it same length as other games. So, in fact there is no repetition, in comparison with normal (shorter) games.

Wow, what a masterpiece!! This was one of the best gaming experiences I had in the last 10 years. It rarely felt so realistic to be in a place and to be in danger, the designers really translated the spirit of the original Alien movie excellently into a game mechanic that works! An absolute must for Alien and stealth game fans!

You're hunted by a xenomorph almost all the game, can't do much about it except hiding (and sometimes won't even be enough). You cannot fight him, even if you burn it he will come back after a while.
There are also androids (quite annoying) and humans (try not to kill them to add difficulty and get an achievement).

A truly remarkable achievement by an unexpected development team (Creative Assembly).

Sevastopol itself is highly immersive, and is brimming with detail and excellent environmental storytelling. Atmosphere is top notch, especially if you're a fan of the film. There are SOOOO many details that would make Alien fans giddy inside. The main antagonist the Alien, is very well done.

Sevastopol itself is highly immersive, and is brimming with detail and excellent environmental storytelling. Atmosphere is top notch, especially if you're a fan of the film. There are SOOOO many details that would make Alien fans giddy inside.

The main antagonist the Alien, is very well done. He/she/it/whatever instantly became one of the most respectable and feared opponents I've ever encountered from a video game. It's extremely intimidating, and a large part of that intimidation factor comes from its sound design, especially the loud thumping footsteps it makes as it moves. It's also highly unpredictable, so you can never truly feel safe, even if the Alien leaves the room. Every encounter with it is frightening, tension-filled, and just brilliant.

The other enemy you will encounter often on the ship is the android working joes. I've heard a lot of people complain about them stealing air-time away from the Alien, but I have no complaints. Evey encounter with the Alien takes A LOT out of you. The Working Joes are there so you can get a breather. It also helps that they fit well into the storyline, setting, and atmosphere. Just like the Alien, they have a brilliant sound design, and can also be quite intimidating and scary. It's also immensely satisfying to beat them up. Largely thanks to some excellent animations, and some really solid-feeling weapons. There are also a few encounters when you have to deal with Working Joes and the Alien. This is extra challenging, because any sound you make will attract the Alien to your position.

The animations in this game are BRILLIANT. Every action you do, the game has an animation for it. This may seem small, but it really adds to immersion.

The story itself was good enough. It did its job at gelling the game play sequences together and it did it well. The story was quite straightforward, and that's fine. It didn't need to be some crazy mastermind plot. I was content with it and didn't expect anything more. Only problem was the ending. Definite sequel bate, and just a slap in the face. I won't get into more.

Overall, Alien Isolation was the best survival horror game I've ever played. Extremely immersive, tense, terrifying, and at the same time an excellent tribute to the film.

Because Dishonored 2 is irreparably broken, I gave up on it and picked up Isolation. AI is an outstanding homage to the original Alien movie. Everything feels authentic. It's visually one of the most atmospheric games I’ve played. Alien fans will definitely enjoy it. However, the meticulous, thoughtful and occasionally tedious gameplay isn’t for everyone. So COD and Overwatch players need not apply.

AI is gorgeous. It’s has some of the best set pieces I’ve seen in modern games, rivalled only by Metro 2033. The developer Creative Assembly faithfully recreated the lo-fi look of the original Alien. Sound design, lighting, and color contrast are thoughtfully used to create bleak, lonely, terrifying locations. A few missions are pure cinematic experiences which exist solely to immerse players completely in the Alien universe. Creative Assembly’s attention to detail is second to none. For those looking for a true Alien sequel, this is it.

The developers created a new game engine to precisely recreate the Alien universe. This was a huge and costly feat, but the results are stunning. Visually, AI rivals any current title. And the best part, it runs efficiently on most hardware. I maxed out all settings and cranked up supersampling. My GPU hummed along at 60% usage and my aging CPU ran at 70% all the while pushing a steady 60fps at 1080p. The only negative here is the obvious aliasing on certain surfaces. The game settings don’t correct this. Mods are available which effectively suppress jagged lines. I didn’t notice the problem too much.

Gameplay is challenging. AI doesn’t cater to run and gun players. It emphasizes exploration and patience. Supplies are scare, and the protagonist Ripley has limited capacity. So everything must be used sparingly, as if every item were Ripley’s last. In a few instances Ripley is forced to confront baddies. Players who conserved their supplies will fly thru these segments whereas wasteful gamers will struggle. In all other instances, baddies should be avoided. Enemy engagements are high risk, low reward scenarios. Whereas most fps titles stoke power fantasies, AI makes Ripley feel powerless at every turn.

IGN and a few other reviewer hated AI’s enemy intelligence. I don’t understand why. Most stealth games employ sentries with predictable patrols. AI’s dangerous alien actively hunts players. The monster can’t be killed, and mistakes are instantly fatal. With a bit of patience and some trial and error, players can deduce the alien’s behavior and avoid it completely. I completed all but the last mission without engaging the alien once. During the final mission, I threw caution to the wind because I had a full arsenal at my disposal. That was on my first playthrough. People complaining about the relentless alien hunter are wusses who’ve been coddled by modern, insert-cinematic-here shooters. The alien pushes AI into a league of its own. Without it, AI is another stealth title. Not every game needs to be easy and hand out achievements just for playing.

Unfortunately, AI’s shortcomings keep it from greatness. Characters are forgettable. AI attempts to push emotional moments on players and they don’t stick. There’s no connection with the characters. The voice acting and video scenes are entertaining, but the story falls flat. Repetitive objectives compound the problem. Both faults highlight the writers’ lack of creativity. AI clones the Alien universe but doesn’t offer anything new.

The space station is massive, but too much of it is locked down. I was expecting a Metroid Prime-like experience. Although Ripley will backtrack in the second act, she won’t have the necessary equipment to explore sealed areas until the final missions. By then it’s too late. Paltry rewards discourage revisiting those sections anyway. Despite 20+ hours of gameplay, I left a lot undiscovered. Certain doors are inexplicably locked (or unlocked) until events or cutscenes are triggered, then they’re magically unlocked. I explored one area for 20 minutes looking for the “alternate route”. Sure enough, a door in a room I already visited unlocked itself after I confronted looters.

Lastly, AI overstays its welcome. The final mission throws a bunch of “oh $%*#” moments at the player, but they’re predictable and overdrawn. I just wanted it end. Once AI wrapped up, I felt unfulfilled by the ending and its obvious sequel baiting.

Isolation doesn’t appeal to everyone because its tough, methodical gameplay aren’t commonplace. Despite its flaws, AI is a superb game that remains underappreciated. It’s a must own for Alien fans. However, the repetitive objectives, underdeveloped characters, and fruitless backtracking hold Isolation back from greatness. If exploration were more rewarding and the story and conclusion more compelling, I would give AI a 9 out of 10.

This game conveys the feeling and atmosphere of the first movie in such an amazing way, that I have absolutely no idea what else developer could do to make it better.

Setting and story - As an Alien fan I found them both interesting. I won't say much more to prevent spoilers but one thing has to be said - the ending is a bit disappointing. The developer obviously intended for the game to have sequel.

Mechanics - I really enjoyed playing this game on hard difficulty. You have to realize that it's not going to be easy and sometimes you have to stay hidden for a long time. Despite the fact you have some weapons, it's best to absolutely never use them (except for flamethrower). This game plays a lot like Amnesia: The Dark Descent. If you're not hardcore survival horrors player, you should stay on Normal difficulty (despite what developer suggests).

Graphics - The game is very dark and looks amazing. There's been put tremendous attention to detail to make Sevastopol seem like real space station. Everything is styled after original Alien. Visuals certainly won't disappoint you.

Sound - Game uses A LOT of tracks (if not all) from original Alien soundtrack. Thanks to that and amazing sound effects you get easily immersed.

AI - Alien is not scripted except for a few cut-scenes. In general you should avoid NPCs and be aware you're not safe anywhere as Alien patrols vents as well (the moment you realize it for the first time might give you heart attack).

The game took me about 20 hours to complete on Hard difficulty. If you intend to rush it or don't feel like staying in closet for 5 minutes - skip on this game. Please keep in mind this game is VERY STRESSFUL and if you don't like horrors, certainly skip it.

To sum it all up - I didn't like the ending. The game is not too long - it's simply not for everyone.
If you like Alien, it's 10/10.
If you don't like Alien but like survival horror games, it's 8/10.
If you don't like both Alien and horrors, just skip it.

The alien is well crafted, from initial encounter it is easy to see how well detailed it is. The music is well done, the architecture of the craft is bang on, including all the added extras like the really old on board computers to the old cassette/radio players.

And for that I am unabashed to offer a full score as the game delivers what it set out to achieve. What more is desired? Nothing at all.

Alien Isolation is a game of cat and mouse, and for all the hoopla and petty click-baiting (and the subsequent long whining sessions stretched across a couple of Ryan’s embarrassing circle-jerking videos) generated by the incredibly mentally channeled reviewers of IGN and Gamespot (and even Polygon) or that god awfully imbecilic Quarter to Three reviewer, it is a game that plays completely fair; it just punishes you for all the right reasons.

Shocking isn’t it? But had dear ol’ Ryan and Co McGees decided to actually read the instructions the game hands out like candy all the time, and maybe (just maybe) light the dimply lit corners of their heads to actually see the clear cut instructions at the bottom of your constructed gadgets, we wouldn’t be in this mess. Or perhaps, look a little carefully around as the items are plentiful, even in Nightmare mode.

Yes, AI plays completely fair and without giving much (as I want the review to be as spoiler free as possible), I would offer a few lines on this. The game is incredibly tense and at times very unnerving. You are literally the mouse in this game who is up against a cat armed down to its last … err … spiked tail?

Well, the analogy is as fitting as it can be as the Alien is a deadly killing machine with incredibly honed senses. You would come to know a deadly adversary in the Medical Bay, as when the leash is off the Alien, it’s just you and it one on one. And all you can do is survive. Yes, people, THIS is the point of the entire game; Survival.

You are literally stripped down to human level and I love the tiny details, as for example when you are putting bullets into the empty barrels of the revolver, Amanda’s hand would shake sometimes and she would do it slowly. Why? It makes sense. She is an engineer not a preposterous Space Marine but an ordinary young woman thrown into an impossible situation for which strategy and quick-wits are your sole modes of survival.

True to its word, the game tosses confrontations (for the most part) out of the window as it’s a hardcore Stealth game dealing with nothing but survival first and everything else later. You are facing a gargantuan threat, an unstoppable force and an apex predator. How do you think it should behave? It should behave unpredictably.

Yes, the Alien is a tough, unpredictable foe. It doesn’t care about your frustrations (I never had them), but only how it shouldn’t see and outwit you. I cannot imagine the infamous Medical Bay sequence going any other way imaginable as its second (or 3rd entry if you count the Axel cutscene) entry here is nothing short of spectacular.

Provided that the player takes notes of the impossible number of easy hints the game keeps throwing at you, I cannot imagine anyone dying in that heart-pumping adrenaline inducing sequence more than 2 or 3 times and that too on Hard Mode.

Your quick wits is all that is needed. And isn’t this the entire point of the game; outsmarting a deadly threat? It just is and its simplicity is even further reinforced by the persistence of the threat.

To be honest, if you love games that demand the attention span of a guppy and draw despicably unintelligent (shoot stuff, save every nanosecond, tell you where to go because, apparently, you cannot read a map a child can) crowd, then AI would prove to be something out of Milton’s parables for you as the manual Save Points and lack of pointless arrows pointing at directions (bar the obvious Motion Sensor aid) would frustrate anyone with a subpar attention span.

This game is a challenge and it proves so by putting you in very different situations to judge your capabilities as a player. You think the Alien is in vents? Try to sneak past humans or Synthetics. How fast are you in these situations to come up with an exit plan? Should I make a noise with firearms or a noise maker and risk drawing its attention or is stealth my option … or is drawing the Alien to hit it with a Molotov more up my alley?

It’s this mixing up of situations and multiple climaxes that hit the nail on Survival and the never-ending tension. You are made to feel vulnerable … and boy is the game apt at this play at mortal fear.

The pacing is incredible, and yes, people a story can have multiple climaxes. Ryan and Co never read anything beyond menu screens for good literature to fall back on as that criticism was probably one of the most idiotic things on the internet; nothing but incredibly ignorant individuals trying their hand at literary devices. I felt nothing but second-hand embarrassment.

A tense Survival game; it would be a crime as a gamer to pass it up as it's a surreal experience par excellence of a lifetime!

This is not a shooter, so be prepared to hide, crouch through vents, and peer in horror at your motion detector as the beeping green blip comes closer and closer to you while you try to hold your breath and not make a noise.

The game is difficult, occasionally unfair, and has a checkpoint save system that reminds me of Dark Souls' bonfires. It all works great to build an incredible level of tension and fear, but it will also be frustrating to players who don't want to try something different to modern straightforward shooters with quicksave systems.

Technically, the game is a wonder. Graphics are the best I've ever seen, and they feel very well optimized for PC. Sound is even better. Every mechanical noise will bring you back to the original movie, and the music feels dynamic and oppressive, including some cues from the original movie soundtrack. The surround audio is also brilliant, and it's just as useful as your motion detector when trying to guess where the creature is.

There are some minor issues (occasional AI bugs, some technical bugs, characters that, despite interesting motivation, are rather flat), but they're overshadowed by Isolation being probably the most terrifying game in years, if not ever (I say this as a fan of the genre).

Lastly, series' fans will appreciate the amount of homage this game offers towards the original Alien. Still, this it's beyond being pure fanservice. Taking cues from the likes of Bioshock, Amnesia or Outlast and solidifying them into a coherent whole, Alien Isolation is a new quality of video game horror.

The game captures the old analog feel of the universe perfectly. Everything seems futuristic but at the same time feels old and clunky. That mix of old and new is hard to capture and Creative Assembly did this with flying colors. The alien itself is also brought to life with beautiful animations and looks exactly how I remember from the old film. Unfortunately, characters and their mouths in some cutscenes can be a little lacking. However, never to the point you are taken out of the universe. Cutscenes and character models still look great. Just nothing to marvel over. I also noticed how in game characters lips wouldn't match what they were saying all the time. Forgivable with everything else the game nails. Visuals- 9/10

    Gameplay
    --------------
Finally an alien game that doesn't have you blasting away every alien in sight. The game is a first person survival horror that focuses on stealth. In fact it is a MUST! The alien is STRONG and will kill you on sight. I have seen some complaints about the alien being OP but honestly......it would kill you as fast as it does. The instant death adds CRAZY tension as you desperately hide under desks and in lockers. The game is long and needs to be taken slow, which will not appeal to all. If you try and sprint at the wrong time the alien will hear you and it won't take long till its all over. Also, there have been comments about it getting repetitive, which I believe is false. The game never lets up the tension and you believe everything that is going wrong and why you would need to head back to an area. Which, never happens that often. You may go back to 1 or 2 areas but they will be VERY different because the alien and station have changed since your last time being there. Which all adds to the believability of the game. Amanda is given a wide range of weapons but, unfortunately I found myself hugging the flamethrower all the time when I got it. All the other guns and weapons look and function perfectly. But the flame thrower is such a safe haven from the alien its hard to get away from. There are a few hacking mini games that add CRAZY tension. They do not pause the game and for all you know the alien could be right behind you as you start, making every encounter with a hackable door tense, and awesome. Amanda moves well and is easy to control. I never ran into a SINGLE bug or glitch in over 16+ hours. The gameplay is great, but I felt that the flamethrower (still a great aspect) made me feel too safe at moments. When you get the chance to use the other weapons on people and androids, like the pistol, it feels fresh and fun. But be warned, the alien can hear every shot! Gameplay- 9/10

    Sound and Voice
    ----------------------
The game sounds beautiful. Clunky sounds that fit beautifully with the universe. As you walk down the corridors you will hear your every step echo through the halls, worrying you if someone is listening. The clunky analog computers sound exactly like how you would imagine. Kezia Burrows voice acts Amanda Ripley and does a phenomenal job. Every time something goes wrong you BELIEVE she is distressed at the situation. You believe Amanda is scared out of her mind at moments because of the great line deliveries Kezia Burrows gives. a specific moment is when Amanda is dodging train cars......I felt like an actual persons life was in my hands. All other characters are acted very well as well minus one character named Marlow who was mostly forgettable. Also, the music is perfect, fitting in the world perfectly. And hearing the old classic theme is an amazing throw back. Tense music during Alien/Human/Android attacks are great. Sound and voice- 8/10

    Story
    -------
Story starts of a little quick, which seems to just THROW Amanda into the current situation. Once you arrive on the Station, that is where the story begins to shine. Figuring out ways to survive and find your crew, while simultaneously trying to search of answer about Ellen (Amanda's mother) is fun. However, the game seems to throw away the whole Ellen aspect of the story early with one quick moment with the flight recorder which I won't spoil. Then it is brought back up for a quick instant at the end. Still fun when its happening though. The true fun is in the story of survival which is captured beautifully by everything above. No details about that, in order to avoid spoilers. Just know its a fun ride. Story- 8/10

All aspects of this game are strong. Other than some wonky lip syncing in game, feeling to attached to the flamethrower, and the Ellen story seeming tossed, this game nails everything. From the amazing visuals, to the fun gameplay, great Voice acting and sound design, and Amanda's great story of survival on the sevastopol make for a game that will appeal to all gamers. Not just fans of the universe. Alien Isolation is a ride worth taking.

Even without the Aliens unscripted AI this game would be brilliant with its well realised world that basically sits you in Ridley's idea for this universe buts its the Alien that sets this game apart from games like Outlast or Amnesia.

The issue most horror games have is predictable AI with set paths, while its still scary you can easily learn the enemies path and get into this repetition of waiting around a corner and then moving out when they've gone past, now while this does happen from time to time in Isolation with the other enemies (Androids and Humans), when you're dealing with the Alien there is no scripted path.
The fact that the Alien doesn't follow a path makes it so refreshing because theres no studying its path and then exploiting it, theres just you having to make quick decisions and using your available gadgets to improvise on the fly.
This is also another area games like Outlast and Amnesia have a problem with, giving you no way to defend yourself. Now while that may seem to be a good thing and be more scary, allowing you to have a fighting chance prevents the game from becoming boring and monotonous.

If you've been waiting for a proper Alien game this is as close as you're gonna get, great campaign length (took me 21 hours on Hard) and wonderful atmosphere make for one of the best survival horror games.

I found myself being relieved at each interval when I would switch from Joe's to the Xeno or even humans. It keeps it fresh. What holds it back is the glitches that are a little to frequent to ignore. People talk without moving their lips, whole death sequences falter leaving a character alive who is scripted as being dead. These things aside, the best story telling didn't happen in the cutscenes (although those are a delight), they happened in the voice acting from Amanda herself. Truly the best I've heard in a game. 9/10 Expand

There was one point in the game where I was so terrified I sat there in the cold corner of a ventilation griping my gun with fear... the horror in this is very intense. It also has a lot of action elements to the game which add to the enjoyment.

The story also fits between the 2 first movies Alien and Aliens (which makes it a good idea to watch the movies before hand to get a good idea of what is going on. Just to make the experience even better)

The game has some very minor flaws but nothing that won't get ironed out when some patches roll out, other than that this will be my game of the year. The game was exactly what I had expected from all the trailers and interviews regarding it, focusing mainly on stealth and survival, this isn't a game for people who want a run and gun experience and it's very important to emphasize that fact as people still seem to be buying games without having done any research beforehand and then complaining that it wasn't what they thought it was, hence the reason for some low scores on here. Alien Isolation is the best horror game I've played since the early Resident Evil titles. It has everything from unsettling silence; hiding while fearing for your life; running for your life; jump scares; fear from different threats such as the slow patrolling packs of men, unrelenting machines, and the often clever alien. Its an incredibly long game for a triple-A story-based title (about 25 hours compared to the usual 8-15), and while I don't necessarily see that as a good thing, its not nearly taxing. In fact, since there are basically no Triple-A games that do the 'hiding from intelligent hunter' mechanic, especially from a single AI hunter, the gameplay length is definitely welcome.

However, the story rarely has any context or complexity, and the actual ending is precipitated by one tease after another. The exit is usually completely obliterated right before you get to the end anti-climatic and invoke Murphy's Law in an almost comical way. It's like, your ID card needs to be refiled, or a ventilation shaft connecting to your escape ship needs to be repaired.

The final ending scene is horribly uneventful, makes no real sense, and is just there for a sequel placeholder. Despite the fact that I enjoyed the gameplay, I'd rather not have a repeat of this very long and repetitive game. In any case, the ending is so poorly thought out that most of it is done with TWO-DIMENSIONAL ANIMATION. What? The rest of the game used 3D cutscenes. They must have run out of budget by the 24th time your escape didn't work out.

The gameplay was good, the set design is very Alien franchise, but don't expect much from the story beyond some filler logs.

Why this game deserves a 9: It's a game that's made to be played on hard mode, punishing your every mistake. That being said, they are extremely lenient on crouching. Crouching almost makes you invisible. I had plenty of times where an alien couldn't see me down the hall simply because I was crouched. I had many other times where I could just run around a table in circles and the alien would never find me.

Why people score poor on this game: It's hard. People who get frustrated score poorly. It's a trial and error game. If you want to survive better try laying down some traps to run to in case you mess up. And for all of you complaining that the Alien is too big and walks around...get over it. It's a way better idea in a horror game. Just the sheer heavy terror in the alien's footsteps tells you so many things about the creature you are trying to elude. He's not meant to be messed with.

Darken the room and put on your headphones, enable surround sound, turn down the game music to 10%, this game delivers great atmosphere and some very tense moments. If you want fast paced action with guns blazing, dont bother.. I found myself low on ammo far from a save point hiding under a table for 10 minutes just waiting for the alien to make a noise so I can continue on. Moving slowly from one table to another, listening to every knock and thump, slowly peering around corners, looking back every few seconds, it can get very tense sometimes. Once you have the flame thrower you can be a bit more careless. A short burst will scare it away.
You really need to strategize your next move in the alien missions. The androids also provide some decent suspense in some areas, but you can easily outrun them.

The missions are well designed, but you do need to track back and forth a fair bit in some missions. Having to search for power generators and power them up all the time can get a bit repetitive, and looking for the exit point and keycards can get a bit tiresome, but it's not too excessive like in some other games (Doom 3 comes to mind).
This game is longer than your average game but I never got bored thanks to the atmosphere, storyline, and the mix of non-alien missions.

Graphics, sound, gameplay are all brilliant, lighting is excellent. However the inventory system and monitor interfaces could be improved. Took me ages to work out how to use a medkit (press Q, hover over medkit, release Q, hold R). Guns don't reload automatically when you run out of bullets so you need to check your ammo at all times.
The maps and direction indicator could be improved, I was totally lost a few times since the direction indicator sometimes disappears and the destination point on the map was on another level.

Negatives aside, the game is very polished and well made. It only crashed once in one of the later levels. Alt-Tab works.
The Alien AI is very well done, probably the best AI I've ever seen in a game. It didn't feel scripted at all. Human and Android AI could probably be improved, but scripted androids was useful when timing sneaks past them.

Easily the best alien game ever, probably the best suspense game of all time.
    Highly Recommended!

Yes, there are some issues, like having to restart the first mission a couple of times till you got the sequence 'wrong' and managed to move on. Watching the alien walk through walls and furniture a few times was amusing … up until it was able to bite my face off through a closed locker.

But regardless of some issues, the support was superb and always pretty quick to get back to you on the forums – in my experience anyway. Origin, Ubisoft and definitely EA could take a leaf out of their book.

I am enough of a man to admit that the ‘poo your pants’ factor got the better of me and I had to drop the difficulty down to easy from the Medbay onwards. But the replayability of the game is clear as I am presently leaving other, newer, titles collecting digital dust as I play my way through on medium. I can only imagine the horror of hard. Yikes!

I cannot recommend this game enough to people. I would also highly recommend getting surround headphones as it makes the experience all the more terrifying as you hear a door open behind you and that SSHHHHHHH as the alien spots you trying to save your game progress. Again, not afraid to say my sphincter has tightened many a time as I try and make a mad dash for a locker or tool cart.

    A truly brilliant experience.

All of which runs at a smooth frame-rate in high detail on my old dual Geforce 470s (in 3D Vision - Oh yeah. It plays well in 3D with a Helix mod patch). I think it runs so well because so much of a level is occluded; it's a result of the narrow passageways on the space station.

As much as I liked it, I have friends who berate it because it's a stealth thriller. You're not going to go running around shooting things and survive long. This is a beautifully told horror film game mash-up and is easily the best game I've played this year. It looks and feels like it's the second chapter in the series. Watch the movie (first one) and then play the game. The mix of early 80s tech and hyper-light-speed travel is surreal.

    Creative Assembly, thank you.

Very well crafted. The environments are exactly what an Alien fan should expect.

Headphones or a good AV set, lights off and prepare your heart for the tension.

The audio in this game is on par with it's lighting. Little sounds, the echoes, the music, the anxiety it causes are exactly like in the first Alien movie. The Alien itself is very accurate. He is a hunter, not a prey. He is smart, superior, stronger and faster than you and your only effective option is to avoid it.

I love the game. If you like survival/horror and stealth games, this is your game and you deserve to play on Hard so you can suffer and die a lot and still feel honored to be killed by the Alien. If you don't like survival/horror but still like Alien, this is your game too, just go with Easy or Normal and you will enjoy a very well crafted game made for Alien fans.

The best survival horror game I have EVER played.

I thought dead space would be tough to beat but alien isolation manages it! I haven't been this terrified since running from nemesis in 1999's resident evil 3. Great gameplay, great story, absolutely stunning

From the very start I was deeply impressed. Once I was fully exploring the Savastopol station, I was in awe at the graphics. Settings on full presents visuals out of this world. With good sound equipment like quality headphones the audio is stunning. Technically it is AAA in every way. It's like a movie set, and saying that I am not being pretentious.

Onto the alien. It's scary consistently and I didn't expect that. I guess many of us have read the alien behaviour is not-scripted. This means its path is not pre-determined beyond being made to visit the vicinity you are at. I have heard myself having the thought, "It's real", because it behaves in a natural manner. I think once the 'it's real' has passed through your mind you're in a world of fear. On reflection I felt I was in a virtual reality world with a live creature.

I think my main concern about the alien presumably not being killable doesn't really come into game-play. I think the point is that the alien is so fast is that if you try, you only get a couple of rounds off. It is capable of surviving that easily before it gets to the kill.

If you play as I did, moving carefully, those save-points came along just right. Every time I saw a save-point, I got the emotion, "Oh you beauty." The achievement of every lever pulled, or item collected or crafted, was safe.

Conclusion: With A:I having other enemies it actually delved into a stealth-shooter experience. However the shooting and using Molotovs and stuff, is massively dispersed with lots of tasks and hiding parts in between.

It took me thirty-six hours to complete. My score rating for A:I is 9.6/10 and the highest I have ever rated a game. I am honestly critical, and will not overlook issues, however A:I didn't present any. The visuals got a little bland in one section and that was all the complaint I could manage. Even when I was hiding under a desk, or in a cupboard for ages I was not bored. I was either watching intently the tracker, loving the graphics around me, or watching an alien.

I'll star right away by saying that I'm an Alien fan. But although it may be truth that I'm biased towards anything Alien, it's not less true that I'm far from loving, or even liking, every movie, game or book that includes it. In fact I can hate it wholeheartedly. But I do have a soft spot for the creature and can always find pleasure, if not in anything else, just by seeing it move.

Also, I'll somehow address other reviews in this review. Something that I tend to disapprove, but here – as a fan - I feel I must do. But I will not point my finger to specific reviews or publications.

When it comes to movie adaptations, one thing that all gamers know is that probably the game will kind of miss the whole point, and probably just be plain disrespectful. Something that book lovers also know very well most of the times Hollywood comes with yet another adaptation. That and recent tries to bring the xenomorph into our beloved medium teached me (us) to be very cautious regarding expectations towards this one.

But as soon as you start playing it, one thing quickly becomes obvious, Creative Assembly did a superb job recreating the world from the original movie. Ridley Stock's interpretation of the (low-tech) future is flawlessly portrayed here through the whole game. The environments are not only faithful to the original aesthetic values, but the developers made it feel like a real place that once was fully functional and where something went terrible wrong. The safety poster on the wall, advertisements, graffitis, the destruction, corpses, among many other details, contributed to an impressive work of world building. The graphical engine only reinforces this and it's further strengthen by a superb lighting system. But superb doesn't means perfect and one thing did bothered me. In a game where you feel frequently in awe with the lighting, it feels awkward that your character doesn't casts a shadow. More so when so much of the game is about stealth. It doesn't breaks the immersion but I would appreciate another layer of difficulty by having to be aware of your shadow when hiding. But maybe this was the exact reason why it was decided upon this design choice. Also, human character models do feel synthetic and out of place when compared with the quality of the Alien or the androids.

But it's not the visuals alone that help create this cohesive world, another aspect that sticks to your mind is the sound. On this department I absolutely have nothing to point. The soundtrack is just perfect, and every sound effect feels just right.

But what about it's core? What is A:I all about? As you might know by now this game fits the genre of survival horror – although I feel more comfortable with Suspense rather than Horror. You play as Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley – the main character from the movies- and you are seeking your mother. I won't go into details, lets just say that things just don't go exactly as planed and you end up being hunted by the Alien abroad the Sevastopol station, as well as having to deal with humans and rouge androids.

Probably the biggest “problem" A:I has, it's not being a game formatted for the masses. For example, the save system is vital to the game's pace, as save points are scarce, forcing you to adopt a conservative approach to most situations. A:I it's about managing your anxiety with patience. It encourages creative crisis solving while at the same time punishes those who are too daring. It's not an hard game in it self, providing you have the self control. In some ways it's similar to Dark Souls bonfire system, being as punishing as it can be rewarding.

As an Alien fan this is the game I was hoping for, and more. As a gamer, this is a wonderful step out formulaic and secure zones. It is a game that takes risks, and by doing so loses some mass appeal. A perfect game? No. But it is still kind of painful to see some major publications being too punishing to this game and simultaneously giving higher scores to broken and/or uninspired games. In many reviews it's clear that the reviewer rushed through the game, and points criticism in a way that seems that it was playing an whole different game. And this is why we can't have good things.

Easily one of the best games since the year 2000. Great story telling, immersive environments, dynamic enemies, all that jazz. To boot, on PC it renders wonderfully. I played the release version through twice without the slightest glitch or hangup, which as compares to some recent releases, is a real relief. Srsly, whatever their charging now, this game's worth your money.

This game does not contain atmosphere. That's because it is all enveloping, surrounding you as you are walking or creeping through the Sevastopol Space Station. You most certainly are hoping to all hell that you are not running through that station. I have never been so immersed in a game before. The lighting effects, the smoke and steam effects, the fire effects are all top notch. Best fire effect I've ever seen.

The audio. OMG the Audio! From the background music to the sound of metal bending or being walked upon to the ambient sounds of well everything. I have never experienced such superb use of sounds in a game.

The game developers Creative Assembly have gone to great lengths with this game to make it as immersive as possible. They had to get the graphics and art style top notch and they succeeded. They had to get the sounds perfected and they succeeded. They had to get the gameplay perfect and they succeeded. It's like I am there in the Alien movie.

I'm giving this a 10/10 Game of the Year award. Must buy.

However in warning and after watching this game be played by multiple people I have to let you know that there are two ways of playing this game.

You can either play it as Amanda Ripley where you are on board a space station trying to survive. Or you can play it as a computer gamer sitting behind your monitor in your room with distractions or an attitude of i'll just walk around in the game world la di da and hope the alien doesn't see me but if it does thats too bad i'll just reload and walk again hoping it doesn't see me because i'm not in the game and i just want to finish this game to go play CoD...

It's quite easy to be Amanda Ripley. The atmosphere is there. The graphics are there. The gameplay is there. The sounds are there. You will get the most enjoyment out of it as Amanda Ripley.

I've always been invested in the Alien universe and this delivered exactly what I wanted; a suspenseful science fiction FPS with survival-horror elements. The atmosphere is to tense you could cut it with a knife. It deserves the praise it gets and is a testament to the developers sticking true to source material.

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
