Persona 3 Reload on Switch 2 is functionally the same game found everywhere else, and though the remaster of Persona 3 Portable is playable on the system, this is a more refined way of experiencing one of the most memorable stories in gaming and a seminal title for the RPG genre. The inconsistent frame rate will be unnoticeable to some and inexcusable to others, but the added perk of portability may be enough to make up for its graphical shortcomings. Moreover, it wouldn’t be right for a game that aims for excellence to be shot down for the few targets it missed, just as how a life of many highs shouldn’t be defined by the times it stumbled and struggled. Persona 3 Reload is a beautiful game, and it being on the Switch 2, imperfect as it may be, means that more people will get to see that beauty for themselves and come away from it with a greater love for what games can really be.

Persona 3 Reload’s strengths are in its details. The game’s turn-based combat and social aspects should become repetitive, but they build effectively throughout. More importantly, the style, story, and characters are continually compelling, driving to a finish that will stick with you well after the game’s finished.

Its gorgeous visual overhaul, much improved audio presentation, and myriad quality of life improvements easily make it the best way to play an RPG that is just as relevant today as it was in the early noughts. It’s nostalgia done well, because it plays onscreen the way the original felt in my memory (without having to squint at a 4-inch PSP screen). It’s honestly a joy to see a game I loved brought to a whole new audience, while still giving me a deluxe version of something I already know I’ll enjoy. While it may not include every ingredient that every version of Persona 3 has ever had, it’s a confident and complete version all its own – and I can’t wait to keep climbing that tower.

This has been quite the non-review, I know, but then I don’t have anything to say about Persona 3 Reload that I haven’t already said, other than to note that it’s not quite as refined, smooth and slick as it is on PlayStation 5. It’s a slight enough degradation that I have no issue recommending the game anyway, though. More broadly, I guess the retro gamer in me does miss the days when meaning in video games was a collaboration between the player and the limitations the game developer worked with.

Persona 3 Reload is amazing on Nintendo Switch 2. To have this Persona 3 experience on the go on a mobile Nintendo console is just great. If you can overlook the lowered FPS, it is a great addition to the Nintendo Switch 2 Library. From the Memento Mori theme story, the memorable cast, soundtrack, and battle system, you will not regret it.

Persona 3 Reload is not a carbon-copied remaster of Persona 3 Portable or even Persona 3. It’s a refreshed perspective of Persona 3 that removes a good bunch of pain from older RPGs while retaining the charm and character of the original. It feels like many thoughtful decisions were made to better the game’s flow without compromising on its core experience or watering it down. Framerate quibbles of the Switch 2 version aside, owners of 2023’s Persona 3 Portable might feel like there aren’t enough changes to warrant a replay. But, if you haven’t yet experienced its source material, Persona 3 Reload is without a doubt the best version of the game to play.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Persona 3 Reload keeps the Atlus RPG experience intact. The only sacrifice is the performance reduction (30fps instead of 60fps), but in return, you gain the ability to play it anywhere... which is greatly appreciated in a game of this kind.

Those who have already completed previous versions, however, might feel less motivated, unless driven by the curiosity to relive the experience with a fresh technical and artistic perspective (perhaps even in portable form).

Atlus demonstrates its ability to respectfully restore, giving the game a modern look and splendid art direction, even if it fails to completely smooth out the wrinkles of a dated design. The experience remains intense, emotional, and deeply human, with a refined combat system and a narrative that continues to shine. The Switch 2 version, unfortunately, shows some technical limitations that partially dampen its magic, but not enough to obscure the greatness of the work. An essential journey for fans, and an excellent entry point for those who have never experienced the Dark Hour.

Returning players will find the classic revitalized on Nintendo’s hybrid, with locked, steady performance that makes it a perfect title to experience on the go. Altogether, it’s a faithful revival that ensures Persona 3 continues to resonate with both old fans and a new generation of players.

While somewhat of a disappointing port, Persona 3 Reload on Switch is still one of the very best RPGs you could play in 2025.

Persona 3 Reload remains one of the best JRPGs out there, and what I encountered here does little to deter me from that sentiment. Switch 2 owners might not be getting the best version performance-wise, but they’re still getting a version that’s worthy enough to play on the go. Those who care about smooth framerates will be better served playing it on more powerful platforms. But if you’re looking for a solid enough port on Nintendo’s shiny new Switch, you can certainly do a lot worse than this.

There’s still some structural issues with Persona 3, but it’s probably the most underappreciated member of its trilogy.

Persona 3 Reload on Switch 2 is a great opportunity to play an incredible game on the go. While there's compromises to the game on more powerful consoles, and it needs a performance patch, my commutes got a lot more interesting having this in my bag.

Persona 3 Reload is an extensive and thoughtful remake of the original and unquestionably the best way to experience this modern RPG classic. Switching between daytime and nighttime activities is a blast, and the streamlined gameplay and slick presentation make even the smallest actions feel satisfying. Minor frustrations remain, chiefly the repetitious nature of Tartarus, while the lack of FES and Portable content prevents Reload from being the definitive version of Persona 3. If this doesn't bother you, though, consider it a must-play on the Switch 2.

So, all in all: should you play Persona 3 Reload on Nintendo Switch 2? If you've been waiting for precisely this version to dive into its world, the answer is an absolute yes. And I envy you: you're in for dozens of hours of genuine fun and a quality that's in short supply in the usual release rate. However, if you've already enjoyed P3R on PC, PS5, and/or Xbox Series, you're not going to find anything new here.

Persona 3 Reload on Switch 2 is exactly the same game we played more than 1 year ago but the frame pacing took a heavy hit and it's in strong need of a patch. That being said, Persona 3 Reload is still an amazing JRPG through and through that fans of the genre should definitely play.
