In the sea of generic collect-a-thon shovelware platformers available for the Game Boy Advance, Rare has created something completely unique, charming, and fun overall.
-
Whether you're after a quick ten minute distraction of you're preparing to sit in a train carriage for five hours, this game should suit your every need.
-
AceGamezIt's full of little surprises, including humour, great voice samples and a mix of brain-busting puzzle-based level designs.
-
A great little game. It's original and funny, and although it is repetitive it packs enough challenge to keep you entertained long after you've nabbed the final piece of booty.
-
It isnt the best looking game nor is it the best playing, but it certainly has its moments and is worth random sessions of playtime on the road or for a slight diversion. Rares best works have been 2D side-scrollers and their work here is no exception.
-
Sabre Wulf isnt quite perfect, but thanks to its originality, great characters and platforming action, youll find that it just doesnt get any better than this.
-
And the best part of all -- you won't have to go eBaying for a Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer to play it.
-
Enjoyable, if a tad simple.
-
Nintendo PowerThe graphics are lush, and the play control is excellent. [July 2004, p.120]
-
It has an uncanny knack of holding your interest, rarely feels frustrating, and deserves to be heralded among the very best titles on the format.
-
A breath of fresh air on a system with a back catalogue full of generic platformers and ports of classic SNES titles. The gameplay never fails to entertain, combining puzzle solving, platforming and even adventure aspects.
-
A fun action game that's easy to understand and get into, and feels entirely like its own. Even with its loose, sloppy "adventure" elements and strange difficulty balance.
-
For the two people that remember the Commodore 64 and for the one person that remembers Sabreman, Sabre Wulf should bring back memories. For everyone else, know that Sabre Wulf is an excellent platformer in the style of the famous "Donkey Kong Country."
-
A simple, unassuming, and hard-to-dislike platformer...It's light on substance but high on charm - a creative spin on the generic. [May 2004, p.78]
-
It really would have stood on its own without constructing and elaborate void of an overworld, and it seems like a shame that Rare spent so much effort on such a meaningless frame on which to hang an intriguing game play experience.
-
The length is fair, the story is on par with what Rare usually does, its visually superb, and the sound is actually enjoyable.
-
With horrible European jokes and a weird storyline, the superb platforming elements in Sabre Wulf greatly make up for the few flaws in this game.
-
Play MagazineHighly pleasing graphically, and the British humor entertains, but once again, Rare's penchant for annoying sound effects rears its ugly head. [Nov 2003, p.101]
-
It isn't the deepest game in the world, and some may find the gameplay repetitive over time, but the gameplay works well and the game's presentation is passable, too. If you're interested in some light puzzle-solving mixed with even lighter platforming, Sabre Wulf fits the bill.
-
The game can be finished in a handful of hours if beating the lairs is all that is attempted, but there are a huge amount of subsidiary side tasks and gold treasure acquisition to complete otherwise. All in all, a polished game that deserves a delve to see if it appeals to you or not.
-
Pocket GamesA platform-puzzle game gone mad. There's a freak-ton of collecting and backtracking. The wacky story and friendly controls make it worthwhile. [Summer 2004, p.40]
-
The levels themselves are fun and pack in lots of replay value, but the RPG elements in the overworld aren't quite as polished.
-
It's about as fun as a bowl of wheat. [Aug 2004, p.107]
-
Edge MagazineIt's simple, accessible and ultimately disposable stuff. Not the sprawling adventure you were hoping for, but fun nonetheless. [Apr 2004, p.108]
-
Sabreman realizes hes basically jumping through hoops so he can collect glittering treasure and do it again. So do you, but Sabre Wulf gives you both of enough reasons to keep going. Its rather fun, really.
-
Cheat Code CentralDue to the game's repetitive nature I would advise that you don't play it for long periods at a stretch. It will get boring. Savor it. Play one level and then put it away for a day or a week.
-
games(TM)Okay, so it's hard to knock the presentation... but when the game's this bland and has virtually no replay value, it hardly seems worth bothering. [Apr 2004, p.114]
