Like the original BUILD-era game, it's a top-notch shooter. Torus really emulated the way Duke's action looked and felt back then, even including his ability to look up and down (a GBA shooter first!) and jump.
-
This game has tons of action, blasting away at alien scum, and won't get beaten in the course of a couple of hours. It's definitely one of the deeper ones out there.
-
For the most part, the look of the game is very clean. Unlike "DOOM," which could be occasionally muddy and hard on the eyeballs, the levels in Advance tend to be bright and easy to maneuver.
-
As of right now, you can't find a better handheld shooter than Duke Nukem's first GBA adventure.
-
Even though Duke Nukem turned heel and became more of a world hero instead of solo killer, this game still has the same good fun that you would expect from a Duke Nukem game but without the bathroom jokes and strippers.
-
netjakThe graphics and the gameplay will surprise you immensely. It's not everyday that you see a title like this on a small screen. Duke Nukem Advance will take you by surprise. You heard right.
-
Surpassing "Wolfenstein" and the delectable "Ecks vs. Sever," Duke Nukem Advance is a title without peer in handheld form, both in terms of visual quality and speed.
-
Game InformerBest FPS yet on GBA. [Oct 2002, p.94]
-
Essentially, the GBA is not the place to look for if you want a quality FPS, but Duke Nukem Advance has been crafted with due care, which generates an extremely pleasurable gaming experience.
-
Play MagazineLess pixelization, better control, smoother animation, better art, and lots of aliens and pigs in uniform to turn into mounds of bloody pork. [Oct 2002, p.86]
-
Nintendo PowerThe animation is always smooth, fast and never choppy, and the royally difficult game is a crowning achievement for GBA shooters. [Sept 2002, p.165]
-
Nowhere near as pretty or diverse as the original 1996 PC game, but it's easily the best FPS to hit the GBA since "Doom."
-
Not-too-bright enemies coupled with garish graphics are both a lesson in frustration and an eyesore. It takes a lot of the fun out of blasting a floating brain type when the aforementioned baddie looks more like a smudge than a foe.
-
Despite all its faults, and while its not a horrible game, it's just really not that fun to play.
-
Those who have already experienced earlier versions of Duke Nukem will grow weary of this diluted version rather quickly.
