To my immense surprise, I haven’t fallen for a Zelda game like this since I played the The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991). Evidence of master craftsmanship is everywhere in this game. By the time you’re flipping a temple upside down then right side up, you may discover that your imagination has been enlarged.

Thankfully Majora’s Mask 3D has more going for it than simple strangeness, delivering a poignant mix of big heroics and touching humanity on top of the solid Zelda formula.

Majora’s Mask 3D’s small but significant changes push it just far enough ahead of Ocarina of Time 3D to make it as unique of an experience as it was fifteen years ago.

Like Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora’s Mask 3D is a must-play. It’s ironic that a game about time travel would prove to be so irresistibly timeless.

To say that The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D is the stand out best game in the Zelda series is, indeed, a daring - and inaccurate - verdict, given the calibre of the series. However, there can be no doubting that this is the most alluring and positively tortuous game within the series, and for that reason alone, it is worth everyone's time.

Majora's Mask is a risky, inventive classic. This 3DS remake might annoy purists, but most of the changes are for the better.

This is probably the darkest, weirdest and most unique Zelda ever released, and it's still as good as it was on N64. The visual improvements and the gameplay tweaks are reason enough to go back to it, if you haven't played it before.

Majora’s Mask is an odd one, but it’s a legendary game from Nintendo’s library, and one that deserves a rerelease. With its graphical improvements and system enhancements, one of the best Zelda games is even better this time around — and that’s really saying something.

It is a powerful and emotionally driven tale that features an incredibly clever structure that is far more intelligent than anyone really gave it credit for at the time. It’s equally intriguing and unsettling spending time in this bizarre version of Hyrule, with characters you have met before…but are different, here.

Purists will decry the changes made to Majora’s Mask no matter how slight they may be, but I am seated firmly in the “change is good” camp. It’s everything you remember, but without the boredom or frustration related to the passage of time.

Dark, surreal, poignant. Link's foray into the world of Termina – a strange fascimile of Hyrule destined to be crushed beneath a grimacing moon unless our hero can find a way to stop its descent – is certainly one of his most unusual adventures, but it's also one of his best. Fans of the game will be happy with the upgraded graphics and portability, and newcomers will be interested in the more structured guidance. It’s good to be weird sometimes, and Majora’s Mask 3D embraces that thought.

The game is actually better suited to handhelds than consoles nowadays, and the team at Nintendo has kept this at the forefront of its design philosophy throughout – this is a more accessible, more fluid experience than before, and that was all we could have asked for from this remaster.

MM3D both suffers from its allegiance to the Zelda ethos while also etching out a unique position within the franchise’s context. Ultimately, although its attempts at innovation have mixed success, the core Zelda gameplay is still fun, endearing, and challenging.

Still, as a new version of a game many never played, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D has plenty of improvements that overall make it a more playable experience.

Proves that this series can truly transcend time, with the game being just as fun as it was nearly 15 years ago, while also bringing new additions that will make it near impossible to go back to the original.

Majora's Mask 3D feels at home among today's indie games, but it also serves as a reminder that there used to be room for the offbeat at all levels of the games industry. And with the tweaks and improvements this version enjoys over the original release, it remains quite playable despite its age.
  37. Feb 10, 2015

Many think that Majora's Mask is the best iteration in The Legend of Zelda franchise. These opinions are certainly not a coincidence, although constant chase after vanishing seconds, repeating the same steps multiple times and one weaker dungeon could be a distraction. The Original Majora's Mask was already excellent, but the new version is simply better.

Majora’s Mask has aged with dignity. In fact it almost feels even better today, when Nintendo have failed to refresh the Zelda series for quite some time. The concept with the time pressure can be a bit stressful for newcomers, but after a while it really opens up and gives you both an interesting world and a well-written story.

Visionary, magical and unforgettable, Majora's Mask is perhaps the most peculiar and simultaneously complete chapter in the series, a true milestone for the fans of this saga, and for those who generally loves this digital media called video game that makes us laugh, cry and dream.

Majora's Mask 3D wears a new mask, but a mask with little tweaks that keep the essence of the original videogame. It's as difficult, dark and mysterious as 15 years ago. A Zelda for hardcore fans.

There's no better way to keep you busy till the release of Zelda Wii U at the end of the year than The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D. It's perfect from a technical point of view and time seems to have had no impact on this masterpiece.
  43. Feb 4, 2015
    90
A great porting of the original N64 title that pushes the New Nintendo 3DS hardware to the limit. A must-have for all the Zelda fans (but you already know that, right?) and for everyone looking for something great to put in their new console.

It does not matter if you played The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask ten times or never, as a 3DS user you have to have this game. Design and graphics are updated, which makes this remake even more worth while.
  46. Feb 4, 2015
    90
Majora's Mask still feels like the original. The dark style, playing around with time and masks that give the typical Zelda gameplay a twist are things to love about this game. However, we don't feel that 3DS is the ideal platform for this remake.
  47. Feb 4, 2015
    90
This remake changes that title – for the better, from a technical view – but that’s likely to mess with fans’ nostalgic tendencies and will confuse returning players at points. But, for anyone playing Majora’s Mask for the first time, this is an extremely refined reworking of a game which would likely feel archaic and broken if released again in its original state.
  48. 90
Always a jewel in the Zelda crown, and this remake successfully smooths out some of its rough edges – without losing the edgy appeal of Link’s most unique adventure.

Some aspects of Majora’s Mask haven’t aged quite that well, and one boss fight has been changed dramatically for the worse, but on the whole, Nintendo has done a stellar job updating the quirkiest and most thematically rich Zelda game for newcomers and old fans alike.

The game feels perfectly designed for a handheld thanks to its time and mission structure, meaning you can speed through a loop in just a few hours on your journeys. Majora’s Mask is brilliant, and disappointingly still the most innovative Zelda game ever released.

    90
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask for the New Nintendo 3DS is a great remake, with many interesting changes from the original formula. Most of the new features work in a great way, offering a smooth and lovely gaming experience. Zora’s new swimming system is a little bit disappointing, clumsy and less fun than the original one. Both new players and fans of the original Nintendo 64 game should give this new Majora’s Mask the right amount of love.
  53. 90
An absolute winner, and a must-buy for all Zelda fans. In fact, it’s a must-buy for every RPG or action-adventure loving 3DS owner, especially those who plan to upgrade to the New Nintendo 3DS on or after February 13th.

Majora's Mask 3D is all that a remake of the original could ask for. Not only does Nintendo deliver the original's immersive plot, extremely challenging temples, multiple side-quests and the overall gloom and sorrow that surrounds the adventure, it still finds space for improvements, even at a handheld level. Let the inexperienced be warned, though: this will not go easy on the newly-arrived.
  55. Feb 4, 2015

Nintendo reinvents Majora's Mask again with this amazing remake on the 3DS. The game is a lot faster and easier to play, without sacrificing the difficulty or the great setting. If you are a Zelda fan, you can't afford to miss this strange entry.

    90
The overall package for Majora's Mask 3D preserves all the weird delight of the original game while lowering the barrier of entry for new players. There's still a lot that's challenging about the puzzles and fights, but a few minor tweaks make your hard-won heart containers and masks feel that much more satisfying.

Majora’s Mask is a testament to the idea that fantastic game design never ages. It’s engrossing while pushy, unique while also familiar and filled with contrasting charm and dread. If you have a 3DS it’s a must-have – and a good reason to pick one up in the first place.
  59. Feb 13, 2015

It's an incredible remaster, even better than what the fans have dreamed of for a long time. Brought back to life with great care, it's still the best Zelda out there.

Weird and exceptional, Majora's Mask is one of the strangest Zelda games ever. Its level design is certainly not on par with other iterations of the series, however the unique atmosphere and fantastic setting turn it into one of our favorites. The 3DS version makes interesting changes that soften the edges of the game. In the end, this release proves how modern and relevant Majora's Mask remained all these years.

In short, Majora’s Mask 3D is a wonderful and faithful remake of the N64 classic.
  68. 85
Majora’s Mask was and still is a fresh departure from the Zelda norm. Majora’s Mask 3D improves greatly on a few of the original’s deficiencies, though some of the bold choices inherent to the game still have a negative effect on the experience.

At its core Majora’s Mask 3D is still an amazing game, but it’s impossible to overlook some of the flaws brought about by the new changes. Some of these alterations clearly improve the experience, but others diminish what could have been a superb remake.
  70. Believe it or not, I found the added depth helped breathe life into the adventure. Going back to the flat 2D presentation removed much of the world’s vivacity.

Remastered edition tried to get rid of some nuisances of the original, but still it’s a game designed for an old, very limited console. However, if you wish to catch up on classics, first go for Ocarina of Time, then obligatorily check out Majora’s Mask. [04/2015, p.59]
  73. 80
It all adds up to a terrific Zelda game that's been successfully reconstructed for a new era. Majora's Mask was always a unique Zelda title, proof that the series could break free of its more formulaic pieces and still engage its audience. On a new console, in a new era of gaming, it's still that same brand of game...It's just gotten better.

Like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask also passed the test of time and it truly is fascinating that fifteen-year-old game is able to surprise more than many of the AAA productions. Majora's Mask 3D is more accessible than the original. Despite it is a carefully done remake, it often unnecessarily frustrates and most of the time remains in the shadow of Ocarina of Time.

Much like Link's Awakening before it, Majora's Mask takes familiar Legend of Zelda clichés and turns them on their heads. It still works as a Zelda game, while it feels fresh and new at the same time. In spite of being a fifteen year old game it holds up incredibly well, and the improvements made in the 3DS version only adds to the experience.

With its non-linear structure and surreal tone, Majora's Mask 3D sometimes doesn't feel like a Zelda game at all, but it's those who know the series best who will get the most out of its demanding dungeons and its many entertaining side-quests. And with a number of smart improvements that make its frustrations easier to bear, the 3DS version is by far the best way to experience it.

Nintendo didn't go above and beyond the call of duty with The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, but the improvements do in fact make it a more playable experience. Many of the frustrating elements from the original are gone, and because of the nature of the three-day cycle, it's a perfect thing to pick up, play, and turn off after one cycle completes. Majora still isn't my favorite Zelda, but I'm much more inclined to go back to it on the 3DS.

Majora's Mask 3D is just as much an oddity as it was fourteen years ago. While some aspects of it haven't aged well, Nintendo has made enough smart changes to make this remaster worth a second look for those like me who left the original undone. It's nicely presented, shows some real growth of the seeds planted in Ocarina, and is easily among the most unique games in the franchise.

Its relative ease makes redoing the challenges very pedestrian, and worse yet, replaying the same dungeon also means reliving all the pre-faffing-about to get there. You have to endure many of the same conversations, cutscenes and menial tasks you already know of and know how to do. Regardless of what decade you played it in, that is not fun.
