A fantastic classic N64 game that has been remastered to perfection! While some may think Ocarina of Time is better than Majora's Mask, it really doesn't matter because both games are fantastic! Get and enjoy both! This game looks and feels great with my "NEW" Nintendo 3DS XL. Highly recommended, a masterpiece! 10/10 Well done again, Nintendo!

Absolutely amazing, and worth every cent of my money. This is a very solid remake, and it works very well with the N3DS XL. The controls work very well, the story is just the same as it was on the N64, And I can't find much to complain about.

This is a huge improvement over the original version because of the improved save feature. It's really easy not to save whenever you want. The Song of Double Time is also improved in this game. I bought this game with my New Nintendo 3DS XL. The 3D works great, the graphics are beautiful (many of the character models have been completely redesigned. Even the Rupees and the Chests look brand new!) The C-Sitck really improves gameplay, and I haven't encountered any technical issues. It's not perfect (would give it a 4.5/5 if a could) but it's still a great game. I recommend this to anyone who owns a 3DS, especially the brand new model.

For ignoring that the game shines form it's own merits of having a much deep storyline, multiple playable characters, an interesting villain, npc with personality and a good world designed overall with it's fresh time based ideas.
Majora's Mask 3D keeps the overall experience of the original with some major improvements, permanent save files made the journey more comfortable, the song of double time now let's you skip forward to any hour of every day, so the dull waiting for specific time events are over.
All bosses have been slightly altered in some way but for the better in order to use Lnik altered forms more, special mention to Gyorg and Twinmold boss fight, the first for being challenging without being tedious and the later for actually requiring strategy to defeat it instead of mindlessly swinging your sword.

Sadly not all changes were for the better and there were several missed opportunities, Zora Link swiming is worse, now his standar swimming is simmilar to N64 Mario swimming, not as slow but nowhere near as fast or fun as in the original version, it still can be done by pressing down the R trigger, the problem: it runs on magic so if it's gone the only thing you get it's a small boost.

Also this game while is not just a simple port as Ocarina 3DS was it isn't a fully fleshed out remake, yeah it's improved in sound, graphics and interface but at it's core it still the same game, no new dungeons or some sort of hero mode may disappoint you specially since nintendo did add extra dungeons to some titles of the series that saw a port on other console (Awakening DX, Link To The Past GBA).

Still the game holds up and is a great way to experience it for the first time and I won't lie that revisiting the game in this improved version was fun and satisfying, Nintendo should take Majora's Mask as a template for the series: don't relay always in the same convention, by doing things different within the same series you'll get an incredible game that manages to stand out from the rest.

This is one of the greatest remakes into the system. IT has great graphics, great control and great gameplay. Nintendo really did do a very good job fixing all the complaints that were in the original (Which is still a really great game which I recommend purchasing on the virtual console)

Any and all complaints against this remake are just nitpicks by nostalgia blind idiots.

The new dialogue, I've noticed, seems to feel much more natural than that of the original. However, I do have a few minor issues with the game. For example, the change to the swimming controls, although slightly more functional than the original's, retracts a lot of fun from playing as Zora Link, and the Inverted Song of Time only slowing time by 50% rather than 70% makes the game feel more restrained. There are also many game-breaking glitches being discovered very early on, but most of these are hard to come across if you're not actively trying to activate them.

Also, the Twinmold fight is awesome.

Instead of classic Overworld exploration followed by dungeon and boss formulae, instead the characters and world are the star here. The game's main premise of 3 game days that must be rewound over and over (groundhog day style), really brings a sense of familiarity with the oddball NPC's and their daily routines, as well as their own take on the disaster that is fast approaching in the form of a giant, befaced moon that will crash down killing everyone at the end of the 72 hour period.

With regards the remake, there are many improvements over the original that make the playing experience far better. The enhanced bombers notebook for example takes away the need to keep a notepad and pen with you as you play. The improved, motion enhanced aiming controls of the 3ds make shooting your bow so simple that it almost makes section of the game too easy.

The graphics and textures are far superior here...but here is where I have some small complaints. The added detail (on the grass in particular) can sometimes make it hard to see what is and isn't an object, and what is grass. I also felt sometimes that the detailing made the game feel a bit like a fan remake rather than an official, Nintendo endoursed product. Nintendo games have a very distinct aesthetic, and the level of detailing in places here felt a bit too much at times. I would have prefered a slightly cleaner update to textures more akin to the ocarina of Time 3ds remake.

Overall though this is an astounding game. It can be a divisive Zelda for some, and I know plenty of Zelda fans who really don't get on with Majoras Mask. But this remake makes this twisted cousin of the Zelda universe far more accessable for newcomers.

The music and visuals are beautiful and the controls are very easy to use most of the time. While there are fewer dungeons this time around there are a lot more sidequest and these really bring the game to life; everyone has a schedule that they follow, creating a more dynamic characters that you truly want to save.

The time mechanic is probably the mot controversial part of both versions of Majora's Mask. There is an in game timer that gives you 3 days to save the world. At the end of the three days, you must travel back in time to keeping the world from ending. Some say this mechanic harms the game as the player feels rushed but I think that it works well. The ability to slow down and speed up time make this a non-issue.

Change have been made to the game and most of them are for the better. Everything looks and sounds better and the save system allows players to save more often now. There are more save points and can reload from an owl statue as many times as they want now. Some heart pieces and bottles have changed locations. I thought that this would be annoying but I enjoyed finding everything again.

While I was confused by some changes such as the location of the bank and the complete revamping of the Gyorg section on the moon.

The change that I didn't like was the bosses; each one now has a ridiculous massive eyeball for Link to attack and Gyorg and Twinmold have changed drastically. If it wasn't for the boss changes I would have given this game a 10/10.

Whether you have or haven't played Majora's Mask, you should give it try.

Disappointing. I absolutely loved OoT3D, but this game tries way too hard at being dark. The story begins with Link looking for Navi, only to mugged by a Skull Kid wearing an odd mask, who takes the Ocarina of Time and Epona. Link then jumps down a giant hole into Termina, where he finds that Epona has been sent to some other place by Skull Kid, and is then turned into a Deku Scrub by the same skull kid. He then finds out that the Moon will fall on the world, so he sets out to stop it from falling. As for game play, it is essentially Young Link from OoT but with some new tricks, and transformations, which despite being the main focus of the main game, are underused, as each transformation is used about 3 times in the main game. The music is good, but a lot of the music re-used from OoT, which while the music in that game is amazing, just feels lazy since they could've added in more music when remaking it. Over-all,the game was a disappointment that I didn't expect. 7/10, as it tries way too hard to be"Edgy and Dark" and doesn't. Expand

Some songs you get slightly earlier, the bombers notebook is given to you so you dont have to play the "new" hide and seek twice, the bombers note book got a MAJOR overhaul and now supports in depth menus and an alarm feature to remind you of events, THERE IS AN EPIC FISHING MINI GAME THAT IS REMNICENT OF THE ONE IN TWILIGHT PRINCESS (sans boat)

my only complaint? the clock on screen no longer looks pretty (heh)

over all recomendation: if you own a 3ds you need this game.

I still never understood the E rating behind this game. The themes are pitch black, the antagonist is extraordinary and the three-day timer was actually greater of a helper than harm, as I originally had thought. Rather than focusing on a main quest, this game focuses more on side quests and how they relate to the end of the world. The characters are emotional and very intriguing. The game really just sucks you in from beginning to end. The dungeons are among some of the most memorable, with Stone Tower Temple being my favorite dungeon in all of the saga. The only drawback to the N64 version was the save feature (requiring you to lose most items you use and reverting you back in case you were actually trying to finish something). This remake's save feature absolutely soars, allowing you to save at save points and continue where you were in case you had to leave at the moment. The graphics are vastly improved and the changes are quite minimal (the change of the bank location and a few of the stray fairies), which made me happy as it did not change any of the overall experience. They have literally taken my favorite game and expanded. If you're looking to relive nostalgia or new to the series, this is about the greatest thing you'll come across and a necessity for 3DS/2DS owners. Expand

Great level design, quests, and the NPCs actually have emotion and character. Also a story that doesn't follow the typical story line of having to save a princess, what more could you want.

It's not a perfect recreation as some things are changed and, as stated before, new features was added. Chief among them is save points and a new brand new Ocarina song, "The Song of Soaring" which allows you to transport to any save spot you activated in the world. Also some items you will get much earlier in game (ie, The Bombers notebook).

While the presentation is top notch, it would have been nice for Nintendo to place a mode for a original N64 mode. Past that issue it is a solid remake and well worth a buy from anyone looking for a intelligent adventure game.

My intent was to view the game from the fresh lens of a modern gamer, withholding expectation. I can honestly say that I was not only satisfied with this remake but also impressed by how well the game holds up to modern standards in spite of its age. It felt fresh, unique, and incredibly timeless (so to speak).

You can tell that Grezzo put a lot of effort into enhancing the graphical quality of the game while maintaining the atmosphere and feel, just as they did with Ocarina of Time 3D. The story and characters are unique, deep, and lively. The transformation masks are diverse and fun. There is a real weight to Link's responsibility, and the resulting pressure and trepidation from a limited three-day time loop remains a novel component of the game. I can definitely say it is one of the better single-player gaming experiences I have had as of late.

There truly is nothing quite like it, past or present. And in the end, that's precisely what makes it so great.

This remake tried to fix things that needed to be fixed but in this process screwed up some elements that made the game about adventure. One of the things that made the original so special is that you actually had to find out what to do in order to advance by searching for things, talking to people, exploring the field and towns, etc. It was all a big puzzle that you had to solve by your own. All of this was lost in this remake. It's no longer a puzzle, it's a game of just following every single instruction that they give you so you can advance. The satisfaction of figuring out something by yourself disappears. One of the main aspects of the original game was how different it was from Ocarina of Time. Mr. Aonuma said in this game's Iwata Asks that Majora's Mask was originally “designed to challenge Ocarina of Time veterans”. The overall design this two games was completely different, and that was one of Majora's main concepts. Sadly, this remake wasn't done in with that concept in mind. As you progress in the game you notice how developers wanted to make it as close to Ocarina as possible. It's like Navi returned to tell you everything you needed to do, but in a subtle and less annoying way. It's understandable why they decided to go this way. Majora's Mask was complicated in its own way and many people disliked it when it first came out for being so different. Nintendo couldn't take this risk again and made this remake for all the Ocarina of Time fans. For all those people that find the Water Temple frustrating and were happy when Grezzo made it easier in the 3D remake. Ultimately, over the years game design has declined in complexity to appeal to the masses, and that's completely fine because that's the only way the video game industry will survive. Majora's Mask 3D is still a great game, with great graphics and some nice changes (like the Gyorg battle, how the Song of Double Time functions, etc), but it lacks the main the exploring elements that made this game so special. It got me through a lot of hard times and is directly responsible for my choice in career. However, this remake has made me turn off my DS in disappointment time and time again.

I understand the need for a different save mechanic as it's now a handheld title, but they've gone way overboard with save points - they're absolutely everywhere.

The most jarring change so far is the bosses. They now have an enormous Majora's eye which pops out as an obvious weak point. Think Gohma's eye style simplicity - all four of them have one now. I first played this game when I was 11 and never struggled more than was necessary with the bosses. Sure, I died, I had to go back, but I felt a great achievement when I finally managed it. None of them have been improved by this change, only made more frustrating.

The artists have done an incredible job, the models and textures look great, but even with that change, some of the original Majora's Mask is lost. The mood of the game has been changed alongside the art - the darkness and incredible pressure from the moon above has been diminished by over saturation. It was always a colourful game, but the saturation was contrasted with darkness. All three main transformations have smiling faces or bigger eyes. It all seems a bit... too happy for an impending apocalyptic setting.

The clock UI has changed, it's now a bar. You can play the song of double time to skip to whatever point in time you want. The whole, core mechanic of being up against time itself has been negated.

Characters have been moved, text has been tacked on. The zora swimming has been made painfully slow. All your character's attacks are faster, more powerful. Skull Keeta needs to have a little chat before he slowly meanders away.

Aonuma said in an interview something similar to, "this game is for people who didn't like the original Majora's Mask, or gave up halfway through." That's exactly right. Anju and Kafei's quest? Full of unskippable bomber's notebook pop-ups. Skip to whatever time you need, telling you exactly who needs what and where.

I'm glad more people are getting interested in Majora's Mask, but it's just too different for me to enjoy. Majora's Mask 3DS is a good-looking, upbeat, dumbed down and easier version of a game I love with all my heart.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is probably so popular out of nostalgia. I'm a long time Zelda fan, have played a majority of the series ever since childhood, starting with the original, love this series more than any other video game series (along with Final Fantasy), but as I played Majora's Mask, I just kept waiting for it to get good, and it didn't.

I think this game relied too heavily on regurgitating content from Ocarina of Time. Character models, weapons and items, soundtrack, sound effects, so many things were exactly the same. It seems like they lazily slopped together something new from old content. Where the hell is Zelda? Isn't this the Legend of Zelda? She was shown in a flashback and I kept waiting to see her actually have a part in this plot, but she didn't. No explanation for why childhood link has ended up in "Termina", no longer in Hyrule, but all the same people he knew in Hyrule were there, some of them mortal enemies in Ocarina of Time, now just chums.

The time mechanic was the most terrible annoyance and seemed pointless. Most of the "scheduled" events were sidequests that you had a one in a million-chance of being at the right place at the right time to encounter without using a walkthrough. I'm shocked to know that the Song of Double Time wasn't in the original because if I had had to wait for time to pass over and over I'd have wasted such a huge chunk of my life playing this game I'd have probably given up after the first temple (oh wait, that is exactly what happened when I played it on N64 long ago). Though my biggest annoyance was that even after slowing the flow of time there were times I ran out of time JUST as I was nearing the end of a dungeon. It's bad enough you have to be timed trying to solve the dungeons, but it's a slap in the face that there's a freaking collect quest in each one for great fairies, some of which are practically impossible to find without a walkthrough. Some dungeons I had to make a choice whether to finish it and fight the boss or take the fairies to the fountain b/c I wouldn't have time to do both before the world ends. So I had to do one and then start the days over and go through the temple from scratch. Who the hell thought that would be fun? It's not fun. It's a waste of time and utterly annoying.

I think this game insults its players by making them repeat many tasks via the time mechanic, not just if you run out of time, but if you want to get alternate options on a quest, or if you have to go "correct" one of the four regions again by fighting its boss to start another quest in that area that is dependent on it being in its proper state.

Honestly, the countdown timer in the game didn't make me feel a sense of impending doom since there is no real end to it and you can just start over. All it did was make me aware that hours of my life were trickling away as I played this. I am all for the designers of Zelda taking liberty with a game that strays from the traditions, but I just didn't like this game, and I played it all the way to the pointless, lackluster finale where nothing made sense and it got surprisingly even more gaudy than it already was. I feel like this game is a window into someone's acid trip... Rather than it having the poignant dream-like feel of Link's Awakening or the dark delusion and gloom of Twilight Princess, it all just seemed so tacky and unguided, so random. Links screams and animation every time he put on a mask were gag-inducing.

There really wasn't much of a plot or any friends or emotional attachments for Link either, so storywise this game was really shallow. The only time I got a remotely emotional reaction was during an optional side quest about Anju and Kafei... and maybe for a split second over that Zora who dies on the beach, whose friends and girlfriend never find out he's dead... unsettlingly.

I didn't actually enjoy playing as the various species except maybe the Goron. The various controls and attacks seemed to make Link's set of equipment fairly useless and it didn't feel like a Zelda game much. Imagine playing Twilight Princess as a wolf for 3/4 of the game and how awful that would have made it. That's how I felt here. There were also many, many times where this game just had awful controls and physics, especially when controlling the alternate forms, and it would punish you with constantly having to redo or retry something to get it right when the problem isn't that the player isn't skilled. It's that the controls are clumsy and unresponsive and often do the opposite of what you tell them to.

The music in this game was mostly not memorable, and the new ocarina and instrument "songs" were terrible. Most sounded like random notes and not songs, unlike the very memorable tunes in Ocarina of Time.

I feel really disappointed and surprised at how bad this game is, so much that I'm struggling to feel this was a Zelda game and wondering how it earns its praises. It's gotta be nostalgia or people who love side-quest games.

Where the bank used to be is now just a blank wall. The stalls in south clock town and the Deku Merchant's Flower has been moved. I finally recovered from the shock of things being out of place and decided to continue on my quest. I go to play hide and seek with the Bomber Kids and some aren't where they used to be. This game was a Nintendo experiment to find out how little they can invest in making a new "AAA" game and getting away with it. On the N64 it just recycled and re-arranged all the assets of Ocarina of time, with minor additions/alterations. They didn't want to waste time making new levels, so they introduced a ton of backtracking and justified it with a "turn back time" gimmick. They padded a very small game to last for many boring and frustrating hours. Then called it "innovation".

Suprisingly, it failed back then. I say suprisingly, because Nintendo fans aren't known for being smart or having good taste in games, in general. After all, if they knew any better, they wouldn't have bought a N64 in the first place, for just 2-3 good games. Still, it was so sh1t it failed and was forgotten.

Then, as it always happens with hipsters and with the help of some manufactured hype after the Ocarina 3DS remake, somehow opinions that Majora's mask was an underrated gem surfaced. Counting on kids having never played the original back in the day, and adults having forgotten.

And we got this, in the same way we got it on the N64: A recycled game from Ocarina of time 3DS. With some improvements to hide the fact that this game is a polished POS.

Games like this are the equivalent of taking a turd, puting a ribbon on it, placing it on a museum and calling it "modern art". Hipsters should buy it 5x times in order to learn, the rest of us should play better games. Avoid.

Besides the traditional plot about Ganon trying to obtain the triforce and kidnapping Princess Zelda, we have a quest to prevent the moon to fall on the world in 3 days. So different from the previous Zelda games, is the fact that this one is less focused on dungeon exploration (Majora's has just 4 of them), it's more about learning the schedule of characters and events over the 3 days/72 hours cycle (each hour count as a minute in real life), that could be repeated from day one, as many times the player want to accomplish main missions and second quests .

However, while the original release was a great game, it had some serious pacing problems, because it involves a lot of waiting moments to start some missions or events with an specific schedule. Even if there's a song to advance the time, it skipped till the first hour of each shift of the day. So, if a mission is starting at 11:30 pm, it was only possible to skip till 6:00 pm, leaving the player waiting 5 minutes and 30 seconds (remembering that each hour count as a minute) to start the mission. If we failed, we had to go back to the first day and repeat the cycle. Felt like a kick on the scrotum, see?? Possibly, a lot of people turn down the game because of it.

Thankfully, for the remade version on 3DS, Nintendo made it possible to chose which hour of the day we want to advance. Simple solution, but it makes a brutal difference and Majora's Mask 3D is much better because of that. Particularly, i think it's the most important new feature, along the revamped graphics, that looks superior than Ocarina of Time 3D and far better than the Nintendo 64 version.

Other new features that i consider important are:
    - Upgraded bomber's notebook (work like a mission journal) that now not only show the characters schedules, but gives additional info and the status of each mission.
    - More save points
    - Touch screen menu to manipulate items quicker

Simple and effective changes that don't spoil the challenge of the game, but saves the player's time and patience and give it's more rhythm, making it the definitive (by far) version of this classic.

This is the way Majora's Mask should have been done 15 years ago and now we can finally enjoy the crazy world of Termina and its habitants full of charisma and personality, with minimum annoyance as possible, except when we have to go back in time in the middle of a mission because the moon is about to crash (substantially minimized when we learn particular songs that slows and advance the time).

In conclusion, i highly recommend it, even to players that felt it was too laborious back in 2000.

Let's start with the fact that I'm not the biggest Zelda fan out there. Considering how much I loved Spirit Tracks and the original, I was still excited. I wasn't a big fan of the whole "three day time limit" thingy. It felt like a gimmicky way to get you too try and beat the game.

Majora's Mask is my favorite Legend of Zelda game, and I think they did a good job with the 3DS version!:D
Like many video games it isn't perfect by all means, there are times when the game is too easy, and some of the changes are unnecessary!:(

Again, I had fun with it, and it's definitely one of if, my favorite video games for the Nintendo 3DS!:D

It's not bad, I prefered "Ocarina of Time", the adventure is very long and the atmosphere is really nice, I think the game lacks a bit of style.

Perhaps the artistic direction does not suit me, but I'm happy with my purchase.

This is a big improvement over the N64 version, especially with the save system. I love the four dungeons, they are each creative in their own respects, and I actually love how you have to collect all the stray fairies to get fairy upgrades - one of my favorite aspects of the game. I didn’t really get too involved in side quests, which this game has tons of, and mainly just completed the dungeons and did a few side quests just to get an extra bottle or quiver improvement. People complain about the time restraints, but as long as you play the inverted song of time you should have plenty of time to complete a dungeon or side quest. My only real gripe is I was a little turned off by having all the dungeon bosses have a giant eye to hit, which wasn’t in the N64 version - just thought that was unnecessary, but no game breaker at all. Out of all the 3D Zelda games this is definitely my third favorite behind Twilight Princess and OOT. If you have a 3ds this is worth every penny, such a great game! Expand

If you've never played Majora's Mask, you're missing out on something amazing. I urge you to play it if you're reading reviews to see if it's worth it. Trust the good reviews: it's worth it.

I'm giving it a 9 because of the relocation and re scripting of a few things that were unnecessary, such as the bank and the saving scheme of the owl statues. The owl statues on the N64 gave saving a sense of urgency, and made you think twice before simply shutting the console off. Even if it was a result of hardware limitations, it still would be nice to use the original method of saving. The only thing that would have made this game perfect would be an option to revert to the original N64 version, perhaps after beating the game the first time. Now THAT would be something. :)

Otherwise, the 3D is fantastic, the storyline is absolutely amazing, and difficulty of the time limitations and three day system are just as vigorous. This game expands upon the Zelda series with flying colors. Kudos Nintendo, there is nothing wrong with remakes, especially when they're this good.

Controls were ok for the most part, swimming was pretty awful, camera angles while swimming is atrocious.

Zelda franchise's strongest point- dungeons, took a backseat. With only 4 dungeons, all of which are rather remarkable, it just wasn't enough.

The atmosphere was good, the amount of content, along with the variety of masks made this game a lot more in depth than its predecessor. I loved this game a lot at first, as I kept on playing I was repeatedly annoyed by one factor after another...I didn't feel like I was even playing a Zelda game anymore.

So overall, It is a meaty game that does so much right, but the cumulated annoyances made the journey rather frustrating.

Unlike OoT or ALBW, this is one game where I won't revisit. However, I am glad I got to experience this game, and I finally understand the love for it. Because if you don't let the above mentioned flaws frustrate you, you have a well crafted, massive and detailed Zelda game.

It is definitely within my personal top 5 games of all time, it is a 10/10 masterpiece of a game. However the amount of things they've changed in this game has done enough to bump it down to an 8/10. This game is still a fantastic game but let's go over some of the changes I feel are either unnecessary or just bad in general. One of these such changes is butting the Clocktown bank in the clock tower. This change makes it so the banks usual position in west Clocktown and places it in the south Clocktown clock tower. This change is absolutely unnecessary as all it does is change the location, it makes it slightly easier for newer players to get to as well. The next change is having the double song of time transport you to any time of the day. This change doesn't bother me a lot but it does end up making things a lot easier for new players. Another change, which is by far the worst change. Is the fact that every single dungeon boss has an eye on them somewhere which is their weak point. This means that the bosses are painfully easy to a Zelda Veteran like me and makes it easier for new players. You see where I'm going with this? The game has been toned down an awful lot so that it is easier for people new to the series. Not only that but a lot of these changes wouldn't even help a new player that much. (well except for the eye on every boss thing.) One of the things that I've always loved about the Zelda franchise is that the games were never hard, but they were challenging. They force you to think outside the box and use items that seem pointless at first but turn out to be crucial. my other favorite thing is the adventure. The feeling that you are in a living breathing world that continues to go on even when you aren't in it. I feel very few games capture this feeling better then the Zelda games. And while the 3DS version of Majoras mask does screw up on some very minor things. It improves on all the major things. The graphics make the game look absolutely amazing compared to what it used to be. The game has remastered audio which sounds absolutely amazing. The Puzzles in the dungeons always seem fresh and new. The game which I grew up loving and cherishing is still very much there. This game is perfect if you want Majoras Mask on mobile and even better if you are new to Zelda and want to give the games a try. Overall I recommend it to everyone. Expand

The original Nintendo 64 version followed in the footsteps of Ocarina of Time, which was a pioneer of 3D exploration and is considered one of the most important games of all time. This makes Nintendo's decision to go fresh here even bolder, and the resulting title will, at many times, make you wish more developers followed this philosophy more often.

Since this is one of the few straight sequels in the Zelda series, the Link here is the same one we got to know and love in Ocarina of Time. While adventuring with his horse Epona, Link ends up tricked by an entity called the Skull Kid, losing his horse and weapons and transformed into a Deku shrub. He then finds himself in the city of Termina, where, due to the Skull Kid's meddling, an extremely creepy-looking moon will crash land in three days. Of course, Link is the Hero of Time, meaning he can keep using his ocarina to relive those tree days over and over again in order to gather masks, weapons and embark into missions to stop the catastrophe.

Without spoiling anything, this intriguing plot leads to some of the best storytelling the series has ever seen. Characters in Termina (and in the many surrounding areas) are your usual Zelda fare of lighthearted personas, but the creepy atmosphere and the very real sense of danger affects their story arcs in a way that can get truly touching. Specifically, one of the optional sidequests gets so poignant towards its end that it seriously got me to the verge of tears. This is not something that usually happens on a Zelda game, so it was a truly gratifying surprise.

Another interesting aspect here is that the game offers only a few traditional weapons. Instead, most of Link's abilities come from masks, which are rewarded for completing missions. Some of the masks (namely, the ones that transform Link into new creatures) are necessary to the main campaign, while others are useful items that can be collected as rewards from sidequests. Getting all of them will be challenging, but extremely rewarding.

Great exploration is a mainstay of the franchise, and here it's no different. I had a blast adventuring though each of the game's several areas, figuring out puzzles and looking for those all-important masks. The perpetually ticking three-day clock is a neat addition to the overworld, as there are some events that can only be witnessed at certain periods of the cycle. Managing time gives the game a sense of urgency that works wonders with the "impending disaster" vibe, especially given how the music becomes creepier and more urgent each time the final day comes.

And then there are the dungeons. Like I said in the last paragraph, I love the game's implementation of a clock; in the final hours before the moon crash landing, you'll always have to play your Song of Time to get transported back to Termina city on the first day, making you lose all of your "expendable" items such as bombs, arrows, and bottle contents. This works great for storytelling, for side quests, for environmental puzzles in the overworld... but it absolutely does not work for dungeons. If you've played any Zelda game at all, especially a 3D Zelda, you'll know that dungeons are a slow, methodical, puzzle-heavy affair. You often have to think long and hard about what to do next in order to conquer them. And yet there's that freaking clock, ticking away relentlessly. It won't even stop during boss battles, meaning there's a very real danger of having to stop halfway through the fight and start it over in a new three-day cycle. It absolutely doesn't work, making the dungeons in the game, which are all excellently designed (yes, even the water dungeon), feel like an absolute chore.

Each dungeon also features fifteen stray fairies; should you collect them all, you can take them to a nearby fairy fountain to get a special item or ability. This is a great way to compel players to search every single corner of a dungeon... yet fairies are considered an "expendable" item, meaning you'll lose all of them every time you reset the clock. You can't even take the ones you got to the fountain before playing the Song of Time; no, sir, you have to get them all in a single three-day cycle. This is what infuriated me the most about the clock implementation on dungeons, and made me simply give up altogether on fairy collecting, a gameplay mechanic that I otherwise loved.

Majora's Mask is a game of extremes: there's pure bliss in the way the story unfolds and the majority of the game plays, there's an unprecedented degree of innovation... and then there are the dungeons. In adapting it from the original, Grezzo tweaked a lot of the elements that didn't age up well, and yet left the dungeon problem unsolved. If it were otherwise, it could be the best game in the entire franchise. Alas, it was not to be, and as such it will remain a flawed masterpiece.

All said, it does also speak volumes that, besides one utterly rotten dungeon experience, Majora’s Mask is still as wonderful and magical as it was the first time around. It’s not a perfect game, nor is it the definitive Zelda experience (an award I still believe goes to A Link To The Past), but it is a timeless experience that’s worth playing if only to be a part of the legend.

After Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker getting remakes quite close to each other, it seemed unlikely there’d be a Majora’s Mask remake too, but thankfully there was. The reason it remains so highly regarded to this day is for the same reason as Ocarina of Time- it’s timeless. After Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker getting remakes quite close to each other, it seemed unlikely there’d be a Majora’s Mask remake too, but thankfully there was. Majora’s Mask is a masterpiece, so the 3DS getting it for its second Zelda remake was definitely a good thing. The reason it remains so highly regarded to this day is for the same reason as Ocarina of Time- it’s timeless.
But Majora’s Mask is a very different game to Ocarina of Time in every way except for the art style. Zelda doesn’t even feature in the game, and instead of the game taking place in Hyrule, Link has ended up in the darker world of Termina. What straight away makes Majora’s Mask feel so unique is this new world: all of its characters are the same as the characters from Ocarina of Time, as if it’s some sort of eerie parallel universe that Link has been unlucky enough to end up in. What adds to this is the perpetually restarting 3-day Moon cycle, going through the same apocalyptic scenario again and again and again. And the fact all of the characters are exactly like those from Ocarina of Time makes the world seem odd, dreamlike. The soundtrack reflects this. This and the game’s unique storyline make Majora’s Mask darker and more eerie than Ocarina of Time.
Of course, this world would never come of life as it does without the presentation and graphics and along with the 3D effect, they make the game even more magical than it was to begin with. Grezzo have once again done a wonderful job updating the 15-year old visuals for the 3DS, granting the world of Termina much more detail. The locations look superb and all the character models are clearer and more detailed, including the enemies and bosses. Many of the gameplay mechanics have also been polished to make for more seamless gameplay.
The actual gameplay of Majora’s Mask is excellent, as it always has been, using the same control scheme as Ocarina of Time but with new features, such as the masks. As well as collecting the items, there are also many masks that each grant Link a new ability. As the game was released soon after OoT, this was another good way to shake up the gameplay. Though most of the masks are optional and are obtained from side quests, a few of them are transformation masks that transform Link into a character that has died. For example, the Zora mask transforms Link into a Zora character who drowns. Not only is that idea quite different from what you’d expect, but these masks play big roles in the game. They are used as much as the dungeon items to solve puzzles and fight bosses and enemies. Another thing that set this Majora’s Mask apart from OoT was the 3-day cycle system. The plot is, obviously, that Link has only 3 days to save the land of Termina from its Moon crashing into it. Throughout the game you must reset the 3 days (or you’d only have a few hours to beat it) but reset the cycle during a dungeon will mean losing a lot of progress, which leads to some frantic situations when you only have a few minutes left. You have to constantly move, or you will run out of time. The way the 3-day cycle is implemented is complex and very clever, adding to the gameplay immensely as certain things can only be done at certain times. It also means that the developers could make it so that you can ‘fail’ side quests permanently, only to reset the 3-day cycle to get another try. Put simply, Majora’s Mask mechanics are flawlessly implemented. The dungeons are innovative, especially the final one, and the locations have been updated well for the 3DS.
However, the game has one flaw which is still present in this version: its shortness. Compared with OoT, which had nine dungeons, Majora’s mask has only four. And while the larger overworld partly makes up for that, the game is noticeably shorter than OoT. Grezzo could have easily made up for this at least in part by including an unlockable tougher hero mode as has been customary in all recent Zelda titles, even non-remakes. But for some reason, they made the puzzling decision not to, which is a shame. It’s not like the MM’s massively short though and the side quests offer a good amount more of extra length.
Despite its shorter length, Majora’s Mask is a timeless classic, setting itself apart from OoT with its different overworld, 3-day cycle and one masks. Without a doubt, one of the best Zelda games and that has become even better because of the remake.

Racing against the clock at the very beginning with no save points. The rarity of save points. A bomber notebook which was poorly designed so I would actually have to think while solving the games puzzles. I can still see a lot of the things I liked about the original, but the feel is gone.

My displeasure with this game also stems from the fact there is no master quest like in the OoT remake. The first remake soared off on such a high note that my expectations were crushed when I played this remake. If you are new to the series the game will probably be more fun for you, but if you are looking for a nostalgia trip just plug in your old N64, it is a better experience.

I played and beat The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on my Nintendo 64 when it was first released. At the time, I had mixed feelings about it. I eagerly picked it up on Day One, hoping to revisit a new and improved game that addressed the problems with the original. I was not disappointed. I finally found the game Eiji Aonuma fully intended to make, and I enjoyed it immensely this time around. Even if you disliked the first version, I strongly recommend MM3D to every Zelda fan. Expand

I do think Ocarina of Time is slightly better but Majora's Mask is also great. I recommend you pick this up and Ocarina of Time if you ever get the chance to. The only thing I don't like that they changed is the Zora fast swimming now costs magic to maintain & the 3DS' control stick just isn't good when doing goron rolling. Other than that, it's the exact same game with extra details & stuff to make tracking side quests easier as well as a helpful hint system.

It is still fun and everything you remember just better. I will admit I was a little surprised when fighting the first boss and realized they had changed how you beat him, but after thinking about it and defeating the boss, I have come to the realization that the changes were actually better than the original. So I applied this type of thinking to the other changes and realized that although the changes were unnecessary, they have improved the overall quality of the game. For obvious reasons, Majora's Mask was far overshadowed by Ocarina of Time- Link's first N64 adventure was a straightforward and accessible journey while Majora's Mask was a dark, strange, and stressful endeavor. Many gamers were turned off by its limited time system, and the awkward nature of the game led to poorer reviews and sales than its prequel.

But this polarization also worked in Majora's Mask's favor- those who liked the game regularly praised it as being even better than OoT. The same quirks that turned mainstream gamers off were regarded by fans as endearing traits, lending an atmosphere and impact to the title that no game has recreated since. The game developed a hardcore following that even led many to sign petitions and start a years-long campaign for a remake.

Unfortunately, MM3D was not created for those fans. It was created explicitly for those who disliked the original experience, and plays as if the creators themselves share the same disdain for the original that many critics did. Whereas OoT3D struggled to remain as faithful to the original title as possible, Nintendo went out of their way to make MM a different game.

The original save system is gone. Before, players could only save by playing the song of time, which would reset the game's 3-day cycle. The result was that play sessions were demanding and long, requiring players to cram as much progress into each sitting as possible at the risk of hitting the 3-day deadline.

While this system was inflexible and straining, it created a structure for play sessions that always ended in the same gratifying way- the player would feel stress for a few hours, completing a marathon of tasks one after another, but then finally save and lock in all of their progress at once with a cathartic and immensely rewarding return to the first day.

MM 3D removes the ability to save with the song of time, instead using owl statues to save at any time. While this is undoubtedly convenient, it removes the stress and sense of rush that made the original intense. Tension doesn't build up the same way when the player can save every 5 minutes, and playing the song of time has lost all of its impact and reward. Players no longer boot up the game to see the iconic "Dawn of the First Day" warning that greeted players at the start of each session, and are instead unceremoniously dropped back in at the point they last saved at.

A new save system was a sensible addition for handheld play, but it shouldn't have come at the cost of the original mechanics. By not even providing the option to save with the song of time, Majora's Mask 3D immediately loses a lot of the impact and immersion of the original.

There have also been unfortunate changes to the way Link's forms control. In the original, Deku Link could easily chain spin hops together to keep his speed unbroken when crossing lily pads. Now, the spin abruptly cancels as soon as Link hits water, breaking the momentum of the spin. This makes traversing the Southern Swamp slower and more tedious, as Link's momentum has to be rebuilt after crossing each and every lily pad.

Zora Link was originally able to swim like a dolphin, with a feel vaguely similar to the Arwing from Starfox64. Zora swimming brought a level of speed and agility that hadn't been seen before in the Zelda universe, and many gamers regard it as one of the few examples of good swimming controls in gaming history.

There was one problem- Zora Link charged forward when starting to swim, which could lead to accidental crashes into nearby objects. To address this, Nintendo replaced Zora swimming with a much slower, plodding swimming style that was easier to control in tight spaces.

Link can only Zora swim now by using up magic, which depletes so rapidly that Nintendo may as well have removed it altogether. It's no longer possible to travel using the Zora swim, as even a double magic bar isn't enough to reach any of the destinations in Great Bay before running out and there are no magic pots anywhere to refill with. The bay itself feels boring and slow to traverse, as its large open spaces were designed with a much faster speed in mind. Worst of all, the new speed doesn't even work well in the tight spaces it was designed for, causing frequent camera glitches and offering turning too slow to take corners easily.

There are a host of similarly senseless changes that bring the experience down. Of course, Majora's Mask 3D does a lot of things right- Grezzo once again delivers a beautiful visual upgrade, and many small, tedious elements have been streamlined to make the game more fluid. Regardless, there are too many things ruined for MM3D to supplant the original and become the definitive version. MM3D should be thought of as a Special Edition- it takes one step backward for every step forward it brings. Overall, the original is still the more consistent and deep experience, even if it's not as pretty to look at.

Dark, surreal, poignant. Link's foray into the world of Termina – a strange fascimile of Hyrule destined to be crushed beneath a grimacing moon unless our hero can find a way to stop its descent – is certainly one of his most unusual adventures, but it's also one of his best. To my immense surprise, I haven’t fallen for a Zelda game like this since I played the The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991). Evidence of master craftsmanship is everywhere in this game. By the time you’re flipping a temple upside down then right side up, you may discover that your imagination has been enlarged.
