“Unstable” plays a little too conspicuously like a father-and-son bonding opportunity for Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe, yielding a breezy Netflix comedy series that’s so lightweight it could easily just blow away.
-
A show that can’t often decide whether it’s about that fragmented father-son dynamic, or the eccentricities of tech billionaires, or something in between. To its credit, there’s at least some charm to be found in the show’s eccentric cast and sly verbal wit. Unfortunately, most of that happens when the Lowes are off-screen.
-
It's just another cliche-riddled workplace comedy featuring all the tropes that have been done far better before. It's not without some merit — the series truly comes to life whenever it has the Lowes bouncing off each other, hurdling insults, passive aggressiveness, and compassion. In the end, though, it's hard to even see who the target audience is for Unstable.
-
Overall the ratio of jokes to things that resemble jokes in structure and rhythm remains too low and the schmaltz factor too high.
