Yennefer isWhat could've been a great show was brought down by SJW-forced inclusion, representation and diversity quota checklists, which were forced onto the casting. They should've stayed true to how the characters looked in the books. Yennefer is supposed to have pale white skin, not brown. They should've cast someone European looking. I'm so used to seeing her how she looks in the game and how she's described in the books, that I can't see her as a brown person, it's just not believable. The actress playing as Yennefer is talented and beautiful, but her look doesn't fit Yennefer. She's half Indian and that breaks immersion. I'm not unreasonable though, she could've played a Sorceress who was half Nordling and half Nilfgaard, or half Nordling and half Zerrikanian, she would've been perfect for a mixed race Sorceress, but she doesn't fit the role of Yennefer at all. I just don't see Yennefer when I look at her. The other characters also suffer from this forced inclusion, forced diversity, and forced representation, with no regard for canon. Before you think I'm racist. Hear me out. Imagine if you made Marvel's Luke Cage white. That would make no sense. That's the equivalent of making Yennefer brown. It completely breaks immersion and ruins any sense of believability. Once a character is established with certain physical features, you can't just change them, you sacrifice believability and immersion if you do that.

If this was a stage play, I wouldn't mind the characters looking so different, but this is supposed to be an accurate depiction of Witcher from the books, but it's no where near close, the poor casting destroyed immersion.

If any SJW's read this, PLEASE my dude, PLEASE stop. I'm begging you. I'm middle eastern. I'm considered brown, but I do not want your inclusion, representation and diversity nonsense. Keep that stuff away from me. You destroyed what could've been an amazing show. SJW's have no respect for canon and immersion, you people are obsessed with race instead of staying true to source material. All that matters to SJW's is using media as a conduit for social justice. I don't need to be represented on the screen, especially if it's going to disrespect the canon and change character appearances. That's only going to make people resent me for being brown.

I'm so pissed off at SJW's. What can I do? The progressives are ruining everything.

Oh, I know. I'll vote for Trump!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. -

A fairly typical tale of good effects, a decent pre-story (In the form of a video game), annoying overblown characters, and poor script writing will have you reaching for the remote fast forward button too often.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When will any streamer, or for that matter any network at all create a show that has fantasy in reality structure and not based on a series of books which cannot ever be plowed into a reasonably watchable scripted series. Such is the case with The Witcher, an uneven oft times annoying treatment of the video game and subsequent books that came before it. A usually loquacious and amiable Henry Cavill is relegated to grunting monosyllabic answers and surly undertones. The storyline is a wandering mishmash of "you're supposed to already know the language and dialogue and dialects of the inhabitants of The Witcher milieu" tropes. I wanted to like the series, but again I was both annoyed and disturbed by the lack of great storytelling this kind of material needs. And lets not forget the Bard who makes his appearance in episode 2, to the dismay of both and Gerald of Rivia and everyone else I have canvassed. Come on Netflix, lets dispense with this adaptation of novels and video games and give some real show runner creators a chance to create something totally original and geared towards an audience that is hip, smart, and waiting for you and Amazon and Apple TV and Hulu and Peacock and everyone see to step up to the plate.(At least Amazon tried to do this with Carnival row, which I am sad to say was also a miss the mark presentation) the Wticher, for all its video game and novel appeal is a distinct disappointment. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am quite let down by many things involving this show, I love the books and price the games, however this TV show managed to make all of it fall out of place. The good, or should I say the best, part of the show is Geralt, he is everything I ever imagined for a TV representation of the character. I also liked the fact the they kept it true to the books, however I believe they made a mistake eating up two books in just one season.
The bad is almost everything else... Jaskier's song didn't feel contemporary to the show, I hate it so much... Acting is all over the place, Nilfgaard's armor is terrible, relationship between characters is inconsistent, time jumps are confusing, Ciri's character is underdeveloped as well as her relationship with Geralt, which by this point in the books was already close. The VFX and creature design is mediocre, specially that dragon. In conclusion I fear that if they don't fix this show by the next season I will stick with the books and the games, I don't what to feel as if I'm watching American horror story Fantasy edition. (Awful show by the way).
Please fix this...

Update:
After watching season 2, the same positives and the same negatives persist. I could not care less about Yennefer's struggles. Give me more Geralt and Ciri; that is what made the book series famous in the first place.

The good:
- Good production values (photography, music, etc.)
- Mostly good performances

The bad:
- Too much Yennefer, too little Geralt. The show allocates way too much time to Yennefer, her traumas and struggles, to the detriment of Geralt and Ciri. This is not Yennefer's story, it's Geralt and Ciri's.

- Too many creative liberties taken in the name of diversity and inclusiveness. The next time somebody shoots, say, a remake of Shaft, are they going to shoehorn white characters in the name of diversity?

- The jumping back and forth in time makes it extremely confusing for anybody with no prior knowledge of the books.

Conclusion:
Having read the books back in the day and played the third game, I was looking forward to this show. However, I had to force myself through the season and now find myself completely indifferent to a possible season two. This series needs a different showrunner.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Attention: This review contains honest opinion, truth and is made by a demanding person. If you're not used to something more than slow brain degradation, please do not read or you will be offended. Please also note that there is no intention to offend anyone.

I gave 0 because I cannot rate -10 here. The only real plus of this series is Henry that is carrying this, however that's all. I could say that fight scenes are also nice, but when I did honest score rating, each minus dragged me again to 0.

First of all, I cannot even express my disappointment that people around the globe allow such humanity degradation to have place. Just few years ago, people were fighting for too brutal games movies and so on, to be banned/censored(in all cases they were wrong) But Netflix applies applies "diversity and political correctness" tags on something far worse, and people are good with it? Hypocrisy.

About the show: If you watch the series you will stumble upon art degradation, because both books and movies, are art. Art is a part of the cultural heritage of civilization, an expression of soul, something that is here to show us the beauty, capture some thoughts and inspire us to be better(in big shortcut). This TV show, kills art and we allow it on our eyes. It not only spits on the books, but also creates a false mage of what is the world of Witcher.

I have nothing against any culture, but I grew up watching movies where, whenever I've seen black or asian etc. I was like - Wow, I wonder who he is, what is he doing here? - And those characters were very well written. In Witcher, there is no evidence that any black people really exist. If they do, they might be either from far Ofir, or perhaps from Zerrikania. In both cases, why anyone would like to leave their country? In a setting where heritage, culture and bonds contribute to patriotism(which is slowly degrading nowadays) why anyone would like to leave their land? Even Nilfgardians say they don't like to fight for unknown to them lands. Being black, you risk a lot leaving your country to travel to places full of racism. Ofir? Merchants, intellectuals, they wouldn't go without strong reason and support. Zerrikans? perhaps sellswords... Instead of seeing a good written character, good placed actor and good costumes, we see tons of black people like they would live there normally, doing token roles that no one likes. I would be offended if I would be black, seriously.

Netflix is known from using black people as walking money bags, they literally are downgrading them and still no one did sue the company for it? Ridiculous.

It's not that we got only black people abused and put into any role they absolutely don't fit, we got also rest of the actors. Costumes don't fit, character descriptions don't fit, roles are poorly written. A series made for kids who think swearing is cool
No tact, no finesse
Geralt seems to be doing everything as a punishment And all character bonds, stories and so on, remind me of 80s/90s action movie directors, trying to do a plot where characters are like *they offend themselves, then shake hands, offend more and smile* - Like this would give us any depth, insight in their past?

Another thing is that this show is like Twilight would meet Game of Thrones after getting totally wasted beforehand. Witchers look like cool bandit-like kids, played by totally not fitting actors, dressed probably in some gallery store cause I cannot understand this fashion, dropping "cool" dialogues and bringing nothing to the table. I can't even understand why people allow so much money, mind and other resource wasting

According to books, Yen and Ciri are strong characters. Ciri of course has a long way but we see all that development done properly and good written. In the TV show, Yen is like Twilight bella that is soooo special... Remember series 1 dragon hunting?

According to books Yen could be raped there during fight she lost. Yes, a woman lost a fight and she was nearly raped there...does that mean the character is weak? No. She is a strong character and shietflix could just do the same, instead they made cringe scene showing how cool and strong she is...Sorry but in my opinion if you try to prove something, forcing it...that literally means that it's the opposite. So it seems netflix is more of showing that black people don't fit TV and women are weak. This is my impression watching this

Lotr as a Standard:
Have you ever wondered, why we love LOTR and many great stories aren't made that way? Because it's easier to do a piece of garbage and input tons of money into ads, and pretending how cool it is, telling you that you like it, that it's a hit, you need it, buy it. Instead of trying to reach higher. Start demanding people, let's have LOTR a like games and movies. Not stupid resource wasting, mind numbing projects that try to milk us from money.

This is awful show with bad writing, bad casting, bad directing and low-budget effects. They just butchered this show.
1. They took one and only example of good eastern European fantasy and replace characters with people of other races. And book was based on the eastern European myths and legends! So it plain disrespect to the culture if you change race of almost every character. 2. Bad casting. Sorceresses was beatiful in book because of glamur and in show they are not. And in case of Triss -she just looks old. But it is matter of taste and opinions here may differ. But actual midgets given role of dwarfs? It is just pitifully absurd. It seems they can't even lift an axe. 3. Bad directing. Episodes are mish-mash of short scenes and they ends so abdruptly that you just feel disengaged. All in all in my opinion only Cavill is ok in this show even if he is too pumped up for this role. At least he is not too far away from character. So 1 point for Cavill is best it can have. All other things are bad. Maybe except catchy song.

This series had so much potential but doesn't do the source material justice and left me wishing it had never happened.

The writing is terrible, most episodes are hasty, unfaithful, screen adaptations of the exiting stories, missing out on character building so that they can spend more time monologuing about destiny.

The pacing is very strange, so much time is devoted to 'side quests' that the main story has to proceed at breakneck pace leaving it feel very shallowly developed and unfocused.

The casting (and acting) of Geralt and Dandelion (changing the name back to Jasker is dumb, the translators made the right call) is actually pretty good, I think Dandelion is probably the best character in the series, and Geralt is played well despite the lines he is being given to work with.

The rest of the cast was absolutely butchered.

Yen comes off as bratty rather than formidable, Yarpen Zigrins over the top aggression leaves you wondering why it's a character you are supposed to like. Ciri has too little screen time too do any development so it seems like she flip flops between helpless and heroine every scene.

Lots of people seem to have issues with characters becoming black but I think this is missing the point. Racism was a big theme in the books / games but the treatment of racism in the series is pathetic. The closest we get to dealing with the topic it is a character making an offhand comment about it. We never actually get shown it.

They would have been better off either sticking more closely to books / games or focusing on characters back story more (the episode with Yennifer as an apprentice was actually good!).

The how is this so highly rated?

Come on. Good thing they didn’t cast Jamie Foxx as the Witcher. There is a lot of time jumping, which will inevitably confuse non die hard audience. Oh, and finally, the creators really wanted to show us the grand scheme of things. So we have politics, epic battles, sorcerers plotting etc., all squeezed into this rather short series. And that was a poor decision in my opinion, because it cut short the screen time of a surprisingly good Witcher character played by Cavil. There’s simply too little Witcher in the Witcher. Expand

It sat as a disaster looming on the horizon and when it finally landed it became a completely different disaster.

Ive read the books, Ive played the games and what you get out of this amounts to a very ham fisted police procedural with Geralt of Rivia tracking down and dealing with the "monster of the week" despite all the episodes dropping at the same time.

The story lacks the depth of the source materials or their much more famous video games. It is the epitome of generic, bland, and uninteresting.

While the casting looked to have been the biggest problem ultimately that is one of the more pleasant surprises. Cavill pulls off a reasonably convincing Geralt. "Jaskier" is a gem to watch. Young Freya does a great job a Princess Cirilla before she evolves to become the Ciri we know. Question is will she be up to the physicality of the role in later seasons IF it gets that far.

That said the most glaring casting issue is without a doubt Anya Chalotra as Yennifer. Now that has absolutely nothing to do with her heritage and nearly everything to do with the reality that she simply cannot act to save her life. Her scenes are tedious to watch and devoid of emoting. She acts like she is Valedictorian of the Kristen Stewart academy for girls who dont act so good.

Beyond that she does not remotely look the part that she is there to portray. Again not because the color of her skin but because as the books put it, Yennifer was supposed to be an unsurpassed beauty and designed physical perfection and Cholatra has all sorts of imperfections, and definitely the wrong physique for the character. Its Gal Gadot for Wonder Woman wrong.

That leads into the next major problem. With her inability to act it drags the whole production down given how much of the story is centered around Yen's exploits. It just keeps getting harder and harder to watch as the show goes on. What makes it worse is that there is absolutely NO chemistry between Cavill and Cholatra. In every possible way, be it emotionally, physically, romantically the coupling is like that of Hugh Jackman and his wife cognitive dissonance that the brain does not want to compute.

Again, none of that would be all that bad if it not for the reality of how much of the plot revolves around their shared sexuality.

As for the controversy, turns out it was mostly inflated. Seemingly stemming mostly from those dissatisfied with the show taking starkly different direction away from the games. In reality most of the choices made were semi logical and more in line with the books. Yet despite that the story builds itself to be more geared towards women than it does men. Namely those women who feasted on the likes of Game of Thrones and Vikings and serves to fill that niche. The comparison to Game Of Thrones was always doomed to be inaccurate. It is much closer to compare it to Vikings with more magic if anything. Much simpler, much more generic, lacking depth and having even less subtlety. I place it somewhere between Vikings and The Last Kingdom and much closer to the latter than the former.

Visually it is well made, at least as it relates to physical landscapes go. The CGI tend to be pretty bad and highly dated. This means that long term the show will NOT hold up well under age.

All in all the show is tolerable. I have sat through far worse things, but not too many. This show is mostly for those who obsess over fandoms and are going to like the show regardless of how "not good" it is OR those who are just watching it as filler material. Mostly while doing anything else and leaving it running as background noise.

Ultimately Season 1 was an utter disappointment. That does not mean that future seasons cannot make the show better. It simply needs more depth in writing and if there were ever a case to be made for recasting a lead, This is a perfect example of where it is needed AND how it could be easily done with the built in "world of magic" excuse that could explain why Yen would change her look again and again. It would not fit with the show runners determination to utilize POCwashing but ideally Yen should have been played by someone such as Katie McGrath who would have at least checked most of the boxes, has experience playing a role as someone who can be endearing one moment then cold and unlikable the next.

All in all the show could have been a solid 7 but on the weakness of Chalotra lack of acting ability in a crucial role, the generic writing and the police procedural more stand alone episodic format that is taking television backwards it can only muster a 3 for the first season. Definitely a foundation to build on, but far from being the most stable.

(This is coming from a hardcore Witcher series fan and i can tell that CDProjekt Red crew were actuall diehard fans of Sapkowski's work just as me and i cant tell the same about Lauren) Strong 5/10 because its worth a watch but remember that books are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better.

P.S. Show isn't canon but with Sapkowski's such well writen characters its tough to simply forget their characteristics and go along with Lauren's Vision.

-stupid story changes
-total kitsch scenes - Geralt kiss Yenefer during fight - Is the most embarrassing scene I've ever seen(Every B movie), or when Geralt meet Ciri or all Yenefer scenes
-stupid cast - too many color people(Fantasy based on medieval eastern Europe = must have color people), Dryad looks like amazons, black elfs, black knights...... -_-
-armor designer must be 8 years old child -Vilgefortz is total loaser
thank you mrs. Lauren Schmidt

Characters in books:
Fringilla Vigo (aka cousin of Anna Henrietta) - Fringilla is described as "ghastly pale" when confronted by Yen at Lodge meeting; this is due to Fringilla's embarrassment at her failure in obtaining the location of Vilgefortz's hideout from Geralt.
Eithné - The Silver-Eyed
Triss - Books describe her hair as chestnut(Auburn), which is a brown and red coloring. In The Lady of the Lake it's further noted as "ginger" and while this usually pertains to redheads, in some cases it also means a brown red color.
Artorius Vigo - White old Man
Vilgefortz of Roggeveen – the most powerful mage, kill Regis(Higher Vampire)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only saving grace is the choreography. Cast was horrendous aside from Henry Cavill, Triss Merrigold being the worst among them all, completely ruined my impression. The settings felt cheap, especially the forest and the dragon, what the heck was going on? even LOTR in the 2000s did much better. Then it's the horrible writing, the incoherence and chaos. Throw everything at your face at one time, boring monologue at the other. The whole sequence of events were presented in a way that nobody would understand without reading the books or play the games, lucky that I did both. The scenes just felt dumbed down from the book, the jinn scene, the dragon scene, everything felt cheap especially the lighting in Brokilon, omg what the fxxk was that?

While the lacking of brilliant writing and fancy visuals won't kill a show, the utterly disgusting casting choices, the lack of character development (especially compare to GOT) and terrible immature dialogues made it unwatchable.

Dialogues are **** acting is so so, most actors didnt capture their characters and that includes Henry Cavill, whom I like as an actor. Yes, you can tell he played the games, but i would question he read the books, because he tries to portray the game Geralt with his stoic badassery, but gives no attempt to show off Geralt´s wit and intelligence, which is understandable because like I said, the dialogues are pure garbage. I dont think the writers have the capacity to come up with witty or intelligent lines to begin with, so I dont blame only Cavill for that. However Geralt has never been a character defined primarily by his excellent swordsmanship or his stoic demeanor as the games or the show would have you believe. The show is filled with out of place diversity, men bashing, all the queens and authorities are black or female, its progressive garbage of first order. The audio and visuals are nice for a tv production, netflix has the money if not the talent. Fight scenes are probably the only thing I actually enjoyed. You can tell lot of time and thought have been given to the choreography, but thats where the positives start and end. The show has no regards for the slavic roots of the material and the lore is never implemented in any but the most basic and surface level way. This isnt the witcher, its progressive americanised generic fantasy for politically correct audience that took the names and tropes from the witcher and left the balls out. Expand

Poor script and dialogues. I watched this series with indifference, often bored. None of the characters, except maybe Yennefer, aroused my interest. I don't even remember the content of individual episodes.
I read Sapkowski's books about the witcher, so that's why I understand what this story is about. For people who have not read the content of the series can be difficult to understand due to the lack of logical continuity of the action - a lot of flashbacks, which makes the film fragmented. I'am disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not a complete disaster, but it's not a really good series either. Cavill was the only one who tried to keep the immersion while the rest of the cast obviously didn't care that much. It's not only the looks of the characters aside from Geralt. It's also the way they talk. Sometimes making metaphors and references which don't fit into the witcher world because they don't exist there. Here a little example from episode 2: Dandelion picks up the small stone Geralt got shot with from the Sylvan and compares it to a tiny cannonball. This should be actually impossible since firearms don't exist yet. There is already gunpowder called Zerrikanian Powder, but only Alchemists and Witcher actually use it.

The itself plot is chaotic, constantly jumping around and obviously extremly compressed to fit into 8 episodes. The battles often make no sense as both sides constantly forget how to fight. Like in the battle of the first episode where both side forgot that bows and spears exist. Also Cintra thinking that cavalry should be used like simple infanty.

The fight scenes with Cavill are really good, thats one of the things they actually managed to nail. Dandelion is just as annoying and loveable as in the games.

I don't blame people stopping watching after just 2 or 3 episodes. The first ones are really flawed. I'm not only talking about the forced diversity, the obvious budget cuts (that Sylvan especially) and the many small offputting details they got wrong.

It’s 1 for Henry Cavil, as a single part that is not complete garbage. Storyline, casting, cgi and music is so much worth than polish series made in 2001 — it’s unbelievable.

Expand

However despite this the show is an absolute mess in terms of story and direction, it’s hard to imagine just what was going on in the show runners heads with the plan for this series. The series opts for a story that is constantly jumping between timelines and characters, telling one story of Ciriilla. One of yennefer and ofcourse the Witcher himself who is often written out of his own story! With emphasis placed on yennefer and ciri’s journey being dragged out throughout the whole show, these moments were utterly dull and so out of pace with the other action packed moments of geralt as rare as they were! Rather than tell a cohesive story of geralt episode by episode showing us his journey and introduce us to important characters naturally the show would rather skip back and fourth in time in order shove important moments and people down your throat in an absolute mess of a 1st series. I am unsure of the budget for the Witcher but it is quite clear it was mostly dispensed in the effects and cinematography of the show with little care or attention going on the props and outfits, characters often look ridiculous and clothing and armour seem as though it could fall off at any minute, not to mention it looks cheap and unpractical, even the Witcher’s outfit looks as if it were stolen from a primary school drama class room. Overall I have to give credit for Cavills performance despite him not being given nearly enough screen time for a show that’s supposedly his...and also credit for the fighting choreography and effects which are spectacular in the first episode. These things make the show watchable at times but the story and direction in which they chose to tell it are unforgivable. The witcher could have been so more it feels like a massively missed oppertunity. Expand

The script writing, and direction made this overly confusing where it needn't be. The viewers are left not understanding why they should care about many of the characters and motivations. There is quite a bit of angst over the diversity casting, but it doesn't bother me. This isn't Eastern Europe. There is magic, and dragons. Get over yourselves. The problems are that the characters are pretty shallow, and most look downright bored to be there. Still, for fans of the games and this type of media, its worth a watch. I overall enjoyed it, but I totally understand why others don't like it (and its not because it has black people in it). Expand

Complete ****
Miscasting isn't biggest problem of this trash. They just **** original plot and throw away all logic. Henry Cavill was almost good, but everyone else and whole scenario ****

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Expand

Very strong American political agenda brainwashing Imagine the media strom if white artists cast in "Black Panter" movie as part of the african tribe. But Making 50% of Slavic people black is absolutely ok. Netfilx double standarts.

Adaptations of characters and story is absolutely fine but everything here in this series is nonsensical and a complete and utter mess. Unranked amateurs is the only way I can think of to describe the writers and directors as the majority of the actors and actresses are doing their best to squeeze a diamond out of a turd of a script. I'm done with this series I'm going to dedicate my time to programming that isn't helmed by inept buffoonery. Expand
