This once again proves to me that critics are either idiots or only rate positively once they are paid off and that I should not look for shows to watch based on their reviews, and instead look at "user reviews". The main surprise about the show is that there's not much humor. It doesn't need that to work, though.

The occasional gag is in there, but for the most part, the writing seems composed of rejected pitches for one of the long-gone Trek shows. Even in a few episodes, that writing has generated some intriguing surprises, and the chemistry between the characters have grown. It works for much the same reasons a non-parodical Star Trek does: the writers, despite having to adhere to the tropes of the genre, are freer than the ones churning out regular network shows.

It has a ways to go to get up to the impactfulness of its predecessors, but it's been good enough so far that it ought to get the chance to go on a while.

Are people correct when they say this is the spiritual successor to star trek, that 'ST: Discovery' failed to deliver? So far, I'll say 'yes'

    Finally a personal matter:
I never really understood why the rating system on metacritic so heavily favors the votes of the so called "experts critics". A rating of '36' is hardly justified while so many people enjoyed this show. Why not show both, the critics *and* user score as Metascore at the same time?

Great show, these guys should have been the ones making the new Star Trek. Sure, some of the jokes are fairly flat, but it's okay when you look at the wonderful TOS/TNG style plots they have.

This show delivers a high concept Sci-Fi (highlight Ep.3 here!) while delivering the comic relief other shows were missing. The bridge crew feels like people, relatable normal people working together in an office. Halfway through it's first season The Orville demonstrates great Sci-Fi story lines combined with an established chemistry of the cast.

This is the Ship and Crew Sci-Fi adventure show that many of us have been waiting for for a long time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. tldr; Well-made, but mediocre.

I created an account just because I couldn’t believe the huge amount of biased Trekhead reviews here. There has been a huge pile on, creating a spacetime anomaly that’s warping the Metacritic score.

The biggest problem with The Orville is that it can’t seem to decide what it wants to be. It’s not really a comedy; even the comedy that’s there is often not funny. It’s far too faithful to Star Trek to be even a gentle parody, in fact you can’t help wondering if MacFarlane feels making fun of ST would be heretical. At best it’s a slightly non-serious Star Trek clone with deeply unoriginal plots.

It really feels like Seth just wanted to do some amazingly expensive ST roleplaying.

There is a kind of achievement I suppose in combining the worst of Star Trek—episodic plots where characters seldom develop and aliens are either never truly alien or discover that they can only truly find themselves by learning the wonders of humanity—and the worst of MacFarlane—‘jokes’ referring to themselves, cheap pop-culture references. The humour that’s there is more lazy Family Guy (or Ted) than American Dad.

The most telling piece of ST mimicry so far was the alien race (Moclans) who are introduced as a single-sex race. They present and identify as male (which initially makes no sense) but in the second episode Bortus’ egg hatches a female. This is classic ST—introduce a difference, an alienness, and then immediately normalise it or reduce it to safely known human terms. It’s Science Fiction with all the interesting bits safely removed. At least human morality didn’t win in the subsequent plot; that’s a small difference from Star Trek.

On the plus side, technically the show is very well made, all the FX are good and the actors do a fine job with what they’re given (which isn’t great). It may even be better acting than actual ST, but on the whole that’s not really saying a lot.

Will I keep watching it? Probably, but after each episode I’ll still wonder why they made it. I also watched all of Deep Space Nine though, so just because I can devote myself to lost causes, doesn’t mean you should!

At the end of the day, if you’re a Trekkie you’ll probably love it. If not and you’re a watcher of sci-fi, you might be scratching your head quite a bit. If you don’t mind unchallenging TV, you won’t mind this. Ultimately, for most people there is nothing compelling here, but it’s certainly not unwatchable (as some have claimed).

For context, I’d give Firefly a 9, I liked Babylon 5 a lot (despite it’s flaws) and a couple of my favourite recent shows are Mr. Robot and Legion.

Well, then you will really love The Orville. This is the kind of crew that pops in a classic episode of Seinfeld on the view screen during some down time. This is the crew most likely to get themselves blown up in the first few episodes. They are also the most likely to curse at the bad guy on screen and flip him the bird. Add on top of that the most "Trek" themed episodes seen in a sci-fi show since the glory Trek-days of the 90s. I'm waiting for the day that a member of the crew specially mentions that ancient show "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and notes the similarity in their mission. This show is so good but I'm certain as it goes on and finds it niche that it is headed for greatness. Expand

This show, in my opinion, is by far the superior show, in terms of humour and quality of storylines as well as respect it pays to the format and universe of Star Trek (more than even anything JJ Abrams managed)

I just binge watched the first 4 episodes of The Orville... And, being a person with an internet connection, I naturally couldn't resist the temptation to make my opinions known.

For the uninitiated, The Orville is the latest Seth MacFarlane comedy. Immediately this may be a cause for concern, as his animation has become increasingly stale (although I was a fan of A Million Ways To Die In The West).

And yet, within the space of its trailer, my feelings went from curious to optimistic.

In the end, these initial episodes far exceeded my expectations, actually feeling less like a "typical" sitcom than the trailer suggests... Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of one-liners. But the structure of each episode much more closely resembles that of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine or even Voyager. This actually works incredibly well; as the world is built throughout each episode, the jokes feel funnier as you realise these are people making funny comments in a consistent world, rather than the changing rules of MacFarlane's previous animations. The plots feel like the kind you would find on any past Trek episode, with the humour instead coming from the character's reactions. You could imagine these characters in the actual Star Trek universe, being given a ship because there's no-one else to pilot it. I mean, I'm sure even in the Federation there must be alcoholism, divorce and tension between senior staff...

Of particular note to me was the third episode "About A Girl". Without giving too many spoilers, it surprised me how well it emulated the way Star Trek would present cultural problems... With my only issues being it was so early in the series there wasn't the chance of more character development which was maybe needed for the situation and characters to feel more relatable. Equally, I can see why an episode such as this was broadcast so early... As a signal that this was aiming to be more than a silly comedy, but to derive humour instead from how it follows (and plays with) the situations from Star Trek itself, I feel it was successful. One thing that did shock me was some discussion this episode was so-called "SJW" and pushing some kind of political message... From people who clearly know nothing about Star Trek or the kind of message that Gene Roddenberry tried to convey from his very first season.

    Pros:

-It's "real" Star Trek, unlike the modern Star Trek movies and the new Star Trek Discovery, The Orville actually understands its source material and i was amazed at how much depth there was in episode three, the complexity and issues tackled are deeper and more nuanced than anything portrayed by the nonstop action crap filled with lens flares and horizontal shoots we've seen during the last 10 years.

    -Great CGI

-Great Costumes (for the most part)

-The show examines political and cultural aspects of our modern day by shining a light on them in this alien soap opera just like Star Trek The Next Generation did.

-Good main cast with believable acting.

-Action is sparse and gives way to the intellectual examination of society and societal issues.

-The show is very self aware of the silliness and ridiculousness that sometimes goes on which makes for great additional commentary on the tropes and plot devices shows like this sometimes rely on.

    Cons:

-The Robot crew members costume is stupid and doesn't fit the show at all.

    - Some bad acting from a few of the secondary characters.

    - The jokes in the first three episodes (What I've watched so far) are a bit hit and miss, some were pretty funny and some were totally off for me.

Summary: I literally can't think of any more cons, though I'm sure there are some. I'm just so happy to finally have an intellectual star trek type show to watch again. Yes some of the jokes are not that funny, but it's a minor nuisance and is completely overshadowed by the feeling of pure joy as the show handles moral, societal and cultural questions with a intellectual approach. I don't want to spoil anything but episode three completely blew me away. It was so refreshing to actually have to think while watching, I had to stop and consider the points and the implications of the characters decisions and statements to examine where I stood on it all.

Just a fantastic show so far, surely there is room for improvement and I'm sure they will find their feet as time goes on but they clearly have a perfect grasp of what made Star Trek great to begin with and that is all that matters to me.

Again, love the production values, but the cast just is wrong for this series. It's like they don't measure up to the potential that the production offers. It's like putting goofy teenagers in a Rolls Royce - nothing good can come from that. This show just isn't engaging and I think it's because Seth doesn't have the charisma that past starship captains have had. His immaturity poisons the structure of the show. And worse, I don't see a path to improvement without a near 100% cast turnover, and that's not happening. So, I'm out at this point. The characters are lovable, and the humor is well-balanced with the story lines. The humor also is a terrific balance of the expected and unexpected, and the writers honor both the spirit of the original Star Trek and all of the spoof humor that has been inspired by it. It has just the right combination of reverence and irreverence. I don't know what the critics want from this show, but whatever it is they've got it all wrong. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is surprisingly good. They are copying other ST series in many ways but they're doing a good job and it's not a straight copy/paste. It also doesn't have as many stupidities as STD and characters are likeable. First episode was so-so but I liked the second one (Sage is great in her role and the character she plays is convincing and not stupid), third wasn't bad either (the defence strategy by showing how stupid the pilot is cracked me up) and fourth was actually good and felt like Star Trek (and how cool is that they've included a generation ship?). It's ironic that without much effort they've done a much better job than STD creators/writers where everything is **** Expand

The show is trying to be a serious science fiction entry -- which could be funny IF the writers focused the humor on parodying true sci fi. But the humor is all dick jokes and an alien blob sexually harassing the doctor (now in 50% of the episodes so far). That sort of thing might be mindlessly humorous if it wasn't in a show that takes place in the future where everything is supposed to be better and brighter. It's Star Trek Lite, which is fine for people who just want the comfort and familiarity of The Next Generation back. But Captain Picard never had to explain dick jokes on the bridge of the Enterprise. Expand

The starship is properly lit and up to modern future technology, with interesting and consistent designs for human and extrasolar spacecrafts and stations. The social commentary is open to more than a single interpretation and not partisan. The musical theme is very good, not as bombastic as the old ones but still delivering the idea of space adventure.

The Orville...I don't think it's going to hook me. A self indulgent, unfunny mess. It kind of feels like someone took a mediocre sitcom and removed the laugh track. This is a fun show. Mr. MacFarlane's Captain is more reminiscent of Kirk than Picard. If only the writing were on a par with the graphics, I'd probably give the show an 8 or 9.

At first, hearing about Seth MacFarlane coming out with a Galaxy Quest style TV show intrigued me. If anyone knows Seth MacFarlane, you must know that he's a Star Trek fan. He's provided audio commentary on the "Cause and Effect" episode on the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5 Blu-Ray, and he guest-starred in 2 Star Trek: Enterprise episodes. Between appreciating his humor style in shows like Family Guy and in movies like Ted and A Million Ways to Die in the West, I decided to give this show a shot.

I admit, I was a little skeptical after the pilot. It could either go really well or really bad. Fortunately, after watching episodes 2, 3, and 4, I have decided that I like this show so much that I will purchase it on BluRay when it comes out.

In a nutshell, this is basically Star Trek: The Next Generation with Seth MacFarlane's humor. It goes hand-in-hand. It even belongs in the Star Trek universe by replacing words like "Enterprise" to "Orville", "cutting beam" to "phaser beam", and "Federation" to "Union". Look at the uniforms..very similar to Trek. This is also a good opportunity for amazing directors from the Trek franchise, like Brannon Braga and Jonathan Frakes to prosper by directing episodes. I feel if Leonard Nimoy were alive, he'd give this a try as well.

If you like Family Guy and like Star Trek, give this a shot. You won't be disappointed. I give this a 10/10. Perfection and amazing re-watchability in my book. Excited for a Season 2!

As I said, I had my doubts, I thought it would be a full blown parody of Star Trek, which I wouldnt have cared for much, but its far far FAR from that.
What would best describe it? Star Trek. But massively expanded on its humor. But no parody at all. Maybe here and there a few puns, but nothing that would make the show look ridiculous. It actually has very serious topics in its episodes, which bring tears to my eyes due to laughter (seriously, some of the best jokes and situational comedy I have ever seen) and due to being such a contrast to the propaganda that is Discovery and blowing it out of Star Trek waters, which is ultimately why it gets a 10 and not a 9 from me.

You love every single character instantly. Yes, every single one of them. They are original, they are diverse, they are good actors, they all fit together well, the dialogs are witty, intelligent, funny and even as deep as Star Trek on its best day. The chemistry is simply amazing.

With Discovery, Star Trek has been raped by the neoliberal ideology to unrecognizability, but this is a more than worthy successor! And thats also why I am not surprised at all, that those very neoliberal "critics" are trashing it that much. They know exactly its 1000 times better than Discovery, but doesnt offer any propaganda value for their side, in fact exposes it.

The closest thing I can compare it to is Galaxy Quest, mixed with Next Generation, mixed with Red Dwarf - but with Seth MacFarlane's sense of humor. As a Trek long time fan, I'm impressed in the way the first four episodes went. Star Trek Orville has a strong cast, a strong story line, and a lot of humor (both flat and funny). They continue to get better every week while maintaining the humor (a mix of funny and flat jokes). You get a 10 score!

This show exceeded my expectations massively. As a fan of star trek I got a lot of enjoyment from this. Only two episodes in and I already feel engaged with the world building and find the humour is not played at detriment to telling a good story. Pretty much my only gripe is that Seth Macfarlane is so recognisable it sort of takes me out of the show a bit although I am warming up to his and the rest of his cast's excellent performance here. I will definitely be watching more of The Orville!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just watched episode 4 and the show is starting to hit it's stride, it feels so much like TNG but also has elements of the original Star Trek. In particular episode 4 bares more the a passing relationship with 'For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky' TOS S03E08. It also nods to Asimov's 'Nightfall'.

The blend of humour and drama still feels uneven, to be honest at times I just wished they'd drop the joke and play it straight.

The show isn't perfect and still has some rough edges but if it's given time it will grow into something really good.

There's obvious elements taken from past Sci-Fi shows, such as Star Trek, Star Wars & Babylon 5, but that's what makes it likable. I've been a "Trekkie" since I was old enough to understand the storylines & quite frankly I would favour this over the new CBS effort - Star Trek Discovery, having watched both. That's the only explanation I can think of for why this show was so critically panned, because it's solid. It's not perfect, by any stretch, but the three episodes I've seen were consistently good (episode 3 might even be great), and were definitely of high enough quality to warrant sticking with the show for at least the rest of the season.

If, for whatever reason, you're still deciding whether or not to watch this show by the time you see this review, then I fully recommend that you do.

Its refreshing to see a comedy that's fun but serious enough to be believable. For years we've had the unbelievable premises and often untouchable or unrepeatable morality assumptions of what we expect our future brethren to become. Shows that give us characters of quality and morals that seem impossible (at least considering today's mentality) are unachievable. Who can forget the Star Trek episodes that put the notions of "God", "racial and gender tensions, "meat-eaters and killing", "war and violence" or even "emotions" as notions that were primitive concepts only to find later that the show contradicts itself because too many religious folk were offended by the "lack of God" or too many racists were offended by ideas like Kirk and Uhura kissing, or even the rarity of men in the background of ST/TNG wearing mini-skirts. Episodes of the crew of the Enterprise finding the notion of eating mean repulsive only in later episodes to celebrate Thanksgiving with what would be assumed to be the corpse of a bird, even if it were tofu. The notion that animal consumption was repulsive was just not believable to our sensibilities.

Here we have in The Orville a show that while obviously one would like to believe the characters are so evolved they are more human than most humans are (especially under the Trump regime). The show takes what could be considered as serious concepts (cheating spouses, single sex species, transgendered issues, etc.) along with notions of war, alien species, galactic treaties, not to mention awesome special effects and using the comedic talent of Seth MacFarlane have taken these very serious topics and made them fun and funny and at the same time have made them believable.

Who could imagine a Captain's spouse cheating the Deep Space Nine? Who could imagine a Same-Sex couple on the Original Star Trek? Saurian Brandy? Yes but who could imagine a navigator drinking beer at 10 AM while excited to see his new ship? Or Hologram designers putting such twists in their games as to make their computer generated opponents Mexican criminals (as our President like to think of them) and instead of making them shoot the gamers, challenge them to a dance off?

The special effects, the make up and costumes, the story lines, IT'S ALL FUN PEOPLE!! Where and what are these critics watching? We always were taught that human kind in the future would be better, non-racist, non-sexist, non-violent but we have all learned (especially in the last year) that our world and human kind can be an awful species and indeed racist, and sexist, and violent, all we have to do is observe our President and his words and actions and we will see these horrible traits from the people we imagine would one day take us to a magical world like the Star Trek series. The Orville gives us that magical world but in a way that I believe humans (and aliens) might truly act, especially given in the wake of Nazi soldiers on American streets.

I LOVE "The Orville" and I hope that these few "professional critics" heed the word on the "Popular Vote". Look at the numbers above... 290 Positive 21 Mixed 43 Negative and yes I know these will change but imagine the critics and naysayers being our Electoral College and look who they chose for us.

I hope that people will look at this show with an open mind and laugh and think "How much fun would that be" instead of the (even though I love the series) unbendable and often contradictory world of Star Trek.

Anyway I give this show a rating of a 9 even though it really deserves a 10. I hope we give this show a chance.

Well surprise, that is the feeling you get just from watching the first few episodes of The Orville. It felt old a used up. Not that this series will last six seasons. I be surprised if it lasted one. This series blatantly rips of STNG and embarrassingly so. The characters and scripts are wooden. The acting is meh... especially once again MacFarlane. Don't get me wrong MacFarlane is talented man, just that acting is not one of those talents.

The main problem is it can't decide if it is a bad comedy or misplaced action sci-fi. Neither work as The Orville is setup now. The comedy is often misplaced. In fact this may be the one show that a laugh track might help to let us know they were trying to be funny. Unlike the rip off of those other Sci-Fi trek shows (whoops, I mean homage to Sci-Fi trek shows) wherein the humor was strong banter between to characters and humor was in such a way it was added to accentuate the characters we care about. The Orville takes a strange approach with it's comedy. It is not exactly crude but definitely not light, it continuously references 20th century knowledge in it's humor, but, the banter is off perhaps a little arrogant. Perhaps they should decide to either be one or the other. Either be like Galaxy Quest (a true homage) that was a comedy about misfits with some drama. Or be like all the other Star Treks be a serious sci-fi show, honest and caring to the subject matter but with those little light humorous moments. As it stands now The Orville does the comedy badly and the Sci-Fi drama with no purpose other than to preach. It just awkward and rudderless.

I've been very disappointed in the direction Star Trek has been going over the years, opting for more space battles and special effects rather than thought-provoking dilemmas and focusing on the wonders of the cosmos.

The Orville seems to be filling in the dark hole that the absence of Star Trek has left in us. There is humor in the show, but it's not the main focus, and the show is dabbling in serious issues like the ethics of sex-change operations and cultural/racial elitism.

We can forgive the show for trying to find its footing and establish the right balance between comedy and drama. This is normal for a show that's just starting out. But there is a lot to love so far, and the show's heart is in the right place for a fantastic series. Fox please don't Firefly this one...

Less pretentious, funnier, more thoughtful, with more engaging characters—including the Krill baddies.

We found Discovery less believable, despite the cartoony/spoofy elements of The Orville. We found Discovery to be more full of itself, and more straining to achieve its desired results. In Hawaiian Pidgin you’d say “Tryin’, brah?”

Discover wasn’t actively bad, but as other reviewers here have said, it bears the Curse of Abrams—embracing the outward aspects of Trek without the heart and soul of Roddenberry’s vision.

How ironic that the creator of Family Guy and a practising Sinatra-style lounge singer would star in a more Trek-hearted show than the official version.

I’ve also seen The Orville’s episodes 2 and 3 and it gets better as it goes along—less of the 13 year old boy humor bits, more substance. Episode three takes today’s transgender controversies and goes where no man has gone before—with poignant, thoughtful ending to a show that had almost no “action” but was full of ideas and character development instead. Roddenberry lives.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I looked forward to this all summer. I wanted it to be so much. It didn't have to be Star Trek or Family Guy, but a nice mix was just fine. However, what I didn't expect was to be preached at.

The first episode was about keeping weapons in 'our safe hands' and out of the hands of our enemies. Actually, the pilot was it's best show, so far.

The second episode was about the evils of zoos and the third, well, I just don't even know which social message they were going for... was it the feminist story or was it a transgender story. Heck was it just a nod to the pro-circumcision people? Maybe it was a re-imagining of the futility of putting an (innocent) black person on trial during the 40s, because the tribunal, which was badly written, and badly argued, was stacked with a prejudiced jury who were somehow expected to 'see the light'... and didn't. It was unsatisfying at best.

I wanted so much more for this show. Leave the politics and social commentary at home. just write some good stories or I think the Orville will have a short run.

My impression after having seen the first three episodes and some snippets from previews:

"I must be watching a different show than all those users who praise it here."

Usually I find myself siding more with the user score on metacritic, but on this one the critics are right.

The only positive quality about this show to me were the visuals. There was a real effort made to make this show look convincingly like a "Star Trek" spin-off (not that it claims to be). The CGI is of good quality and many elements seem as though they were taken straight out of the "Star Trek" universe. Elements like the uniforms and their color coding system were almost copied, the computer consoles and ship designs have a lot of similarities and the technology presented so far reminds me a lot of many of the "Star Trek" episodes I have seen. Unfortunately this is where the similarities end.

Considering the characters, their quirks and how they play together, the show is a complete disaster. Almost everything comes out of the blue, which may be understandable for a fresh show, but for those remembering the "Star Trek" series, character development was gradual, comprehensible and often happened in interesting interactions or events.
Not so with "The Orville". Usually a change of mind that gets explained through a joke, makes a character do something they otherwise wouldn't have done, but it often feels more like an excuse for having no explanation at all. Deeply rooted convictions get thrown aside and if you ask how this makes any sense you have to accept that another "moment of comedy" just made it so and therefore it does not have to follow logic or be compelling.
No, from the point of view of characters, this show fails severely.

Considering the actual plot of the episodes, there is more disappointment to be had.
I will not go into the perceived pushing of political views (that the show does consistently) too much, but I want to say that I found it to be very annoying despite not even disagreeing or having a stake in most views expressed. It was just done in such a bad way, it almost felt as though they wanted to break the 4th wall by intention at times. It came across as really bad storytelling.
Otherwise the plot is quite stale. Leaving the political aspects out of it there are no interesting storylines. The show seems very episodic at the moment with little meta-plot developing between episodes. Any surprises or even plot holes get covered by "humor" and events do not have to follow logic, so you are left just passively consuming something with no intellectual engagement. Star Trek was quite a different experience for me.

Now some may feel like I expected "Star Trek" and got disappointed, but that would be wrong. I expected comedy and got none, so I looked at what was left and saw Sci-Fi pretending to be similar to "Star Trek" and even failing at that. That is why I compare it.

You could also take "Firefly" as a comparison. That show was truly funny with great characters and it was consistent in its own world following logical consequences within that world. "Firefly" did manage to combine Comedy with Drama in a Sci-Fi setting in its own charming way.

"The Orville" fails, because it does not sprinkle comedy into a good story with some drama, but rather tries to save bad stories with the excuse of comical events that only exist to make the story go on somehow and aren't even funny themselves.

I hope Seth MacFarlane will find a way to change this show in a way he can actually get his strengths to work in synergy with it. Unfortunately, the talents I have seen from him in the past do not show here at all and the huge effort put into this show seems wasted so far.

Succeeds at no level. I assume they are going for a mild Star Trek spoof with light-hearted comedy laid over an interesting SciFi plot with characters who grow over time. It does not succeed. The jokes are 21st century Family Guy, would be inappropriate/antiquated in the future and fall flat even in the present. I agree it has great special effects. It's such a Star Trek rip-off, it should be a copy-right violation. The characters are blatant rip-offs. But viewers of Family Guy humor may love it. It makes all the mistakes of Star Trek with none of its redeeming qualities. It tries to be Galaxy Quest with none of it's humor or class. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. THE ORVILLE. NEGATIVE 5

    To whom it may concern:

I am 71, an avid Science Fiction fan, and have never, ever written in to comment about any TV show ever before in my life, so you can judge this letter from that fact.
Also I am not a sexist. I thoroughly enjoyed the show Voyager and enjoyed seeing a woman as captain. I liked Captain Janeway. I gave that show an overall rating of about 7 out of 10, the same rating I gave Star Trek TNG.

The Orville deserves a negative rating. -5 would be about right. That's a negative five, below zero. I would rank it lower but the production values bring the score up.

I watched the first show and was thoroughly with the basic premise.
If I understand it correctly the premise is this: No matter how much a woman cheats and betrays a man he should forgive her because it is all his fault, anyway, because he didn't pay her enough attention.
Imagine Scotty telling Kirk “You fired me because I sabotaged the engines, but, Capitan, it was your fault because you wouldn't give me the raise I wanted. Oh, by the way, I've pulled some strings and I'm now your second in command.” And Kirk saying, “You're absolutely right, Scotty. It's all my fault. Welcome back aboard, trustworthy crew member!”

The problem with the captain: He is portrayed as an easy-going mild mannered milksop. If a woman's betrayal could send the character as portrayed into such a descent then he's not captain material in the first place. When he caved in and accepted the untrustworthy ex-wife as his Second that demonstrated his lack of character and of his incompetence.
We have a woman who has already betrayed him once, and he accepts her into a position where he has to trust her absolutely. No way should you grant trust to anyone who has already shown their untrustworthiness. The way this man caved to the demand that he accept her in this position demonstrates his emasculation. This is not the personality required of a captain of any vessel, let alone one of starfleet's.

How did the woman in question get to this position? Nepotism and secret manipulating. Sure, she says she's doing the poor jerk a favor, but she is secretly tinkering with his life, and has connived a position for herself where she can be there in person to watch the fool dance to her tune.

This man is supposed to put his absolute trust in a backstabbing, cheating, behind-the-scenes manipulating ex-spouse. The Afghan's have stoning pits in every village just for women like this. However in the Orville's world, untrustworthy personalities are promoted to positions of authority.

This script panders to the new Feminism ideal of the emasculated Omega male who accepts, with smiles, all the crap a woman feels like dumping on him because it's actually his fault all along because he was unaware of the female's unspoken “needs”. The message that, sure she cheated on him, but it was really his fault because he didn't pay enough attention to her is absurd. This is pandering to the “New Feminism.” Bring back Captain Janeway; She was honest and you knew where you stood with her.

This script reeks of “Feminist” input. It has “New Feminism” “values” smeared all over it, and the stink comes across overwhelmingly on the screen.

The basic premise that backstabbing, manipulating women are are really at heart nice people and all their faults betrayals, and secret connivings should be overlooked because... well, because they're women. . And if any male doesn't, then he's a sexist. This is the message I take away from this show. You folks can fold up your message and wipe it where the sun don't shine.

The Orville sucks big time. Not only will I not watch this turkey, but I hate this show so much I am embarking on a letter writing campaign to have it canceled. This show sends all the wrong messages.

You can make this show watchable if you do two things: Ditch the manipulating b---h immediately and give the Captain some balls. Then, maybe, you can something with this turkey. I will refuse to watch this show again until the backstabbing b---h is written out of the series.
A suggestion: Kill the ex-wife off in such a way the the Captain gets resolve and grows a pair.

I refuse to watch this show again. I accidentally came across the second episode while channel surfing. The alien strong girl was in command. thought, “This is a good character. Great, they already eliminated the two repellent personalities that stink up this show.” the show was enjoyable until the scene cut to the captain and his cheating ex-wife back in their old apartment. I switched channels at that point.

I rate The Orville an F---! (That's eff minus minus minus, not the swear word, though that certainly fits.)

    Sincerely,
    James Morgan

This borrows from Star Trek of old. That's okay - they're now using it anytime soon. They've moved on to Battlestar Galactica-esque stories and Kelvin-timeline visuals.

The first episode has weak moments, but overall it was fun. The second ep got even more character development. I think so far, Seth is the weakest link - but by episode 3, it started balancing the humor and deeper story

It's not even close to perfect - but watch Encounter at Farpoint - it's not the best. It's okay - but you also (now) know where it went and how good it got. The Orville needs time. I hope it's allowed to grow and develop into an even more balanced show, focusing on character humor and situations.

This reminds me of the original Star Trek. It is wonderfully quirky. I hope it makes it. It focuses on content rather than explosions and special effects.

It’s got top-notch special effects and terrific makeup (for its space-alien characters). But it just doesn’t quite gel. At least not yet, anyway.

The show's smirky tone, embodied in MacFarlane's smug frat-boy demeanor as the captain, never quite gels with the universal humanism the episode is aiming for. [18 Sep - 1 Oct 2017, p.27]

Except for Norm Macdonald as the voice of an alien made of what looked like quivering gelatin, I didn’t find much that was amusing about The Orville’s space odyssey. ... From its opening scene with Victor Garber assigning Ed his ship to the final, unsuspenseful shootout with alien enemies, The Orville moved from one lull to another.
