Yet again, proof that critics and fans are different pages. This show is everything I have been wanting and didn't know. Reminiscent of Star Trek (even more than Star Trek Discovery). It is funny at all the right moments and serious at all the right moments. Every episode was better than the previous. I hope this show has many more seasons to come.

If you're looking for the next generation of Star Trek - that's actually palatable - this is it. Modern, comedic, intriguing with good writing.

There are no political undertones or motives, just good new fashioned sci-fi. I hope there's many seasons to come.

I really enjoy this show, and I think the 'official' critics are missing the point. Hey, I hate Family Guy too, but I can see that this is something very different. As a majorStar Trek lover, I find The Orville to mostly be a comedy tribute to Captain Kirk. That's a good thing.

Way better than discovery. It's an odd but welcomed homage to star trek. It is mixed with classic star trek dilemma scenarios with Seth macfarlands crass humour. It's a fresh show, and itches the scratch for new star trek

This show is the spiritual successor to Star Trek: The Next Generation. It continues to get better and better, and shows touch of social matters in the adventure of the week. There is minor parts of humour mixed in, but sci-fi is the main premise of the show, not humour. Any critic who disliked the show most likely doesn't enjoy Star Trek shows in general.

While not every joke works, it is overall funny, entertaining, and embodies the spirit of Star Trek much better than Star Trek Discovery. The feel is very reminiscent of TNG.

The comedy element of The Orville was a little uncomfortable to get used to, but now that I have it seems to work perfectly in tandem with show's thriller elements. Under the veil of silliness hides a smart, creative show that has the potential of being as beloved and respected as TOS, TNG, DS9

I introduced the kid to Star Trek over the summer, so watching The Orville seemed a good idea. We are both really enjoying it. If we have an episode of Discovery and Orville on the PVR, we'll usually watch The Orville first.

What I saw going in was a parody of Star Trek and Star Wars from the creator of Family Guy. Should have been good for a couple of laughs. What I found was an interesting and deep sci-fi with serious development and humor that connects to the viewer. In a world driven by critics, it is great to see a show that defies the elite and reaches the masses.

The show is a fantastic show, that introduces you to the Star Trek universe without all of the pompous **** that surround the name. Rather then being on a flagship, a vessel of hope for all of humanity, they are on a middle class ship. The ship is smaller, the people less important, but their lives and stories they have are way richer because of this.

This is a breath of fresh air, with odd humor and the touch of situational comedy, it presents a world where you can actually connect with. Just a bunch of people doing their jobs and having funny interactions, all while set in space.

The show deserves a thousand times better then the rating the critics provided.

I've been waiting for a show like this for years, and it's doing something no space opera show has done in years. Some critics derided it for being '90s,' but it's mainly so in the sense of bright lights, episodicness, and optimism, and those are styles not limited to any decade.

Yes, it is at times tongue in cheek. No it doesn't take itself too seriously. That being said, it is what Star Trek used to be before it decided it needed to be "gritty": uplifting and optimistic utopian science fiction with allegories for today's issues. Take any lighter TNG episode, add about 10% more comedic moments, and you have The Orville. It isn't slapstick, and it certainly isn't a parody. It is an homage, and a pretty good one at that. I hope it forges its own history, because I'm enjoying it a lot.

Seth MacFarlane, what did you do? Oh well, it’s not too late – admit it now. You have been sexually assaulting pro critics ever since Family Guy’s Season 1 came out and you were suddenly ‘someone’. THAT is the only reason why the critics loath everything you do, Family guy, American Dad, that hosting of the Oscars which was a fiasco ( pro critics said that ). I honestly cannot think of a reason apart from this one why they would not give you any credit for your professional work at all.
Admit it ! Make peace with Gid, before the media outs you and you join your compadre’s on a list which is getting unusually long for a single calendar year.
Personally, I think you’r a comedic genius. Over 500 episodes between your animated shows – that is a body of work my friend – not one lousy Emmy to show for it. You are only 44, Omg !
I mean seriously, what do the critics have against you. I know not ( sad face ).
The Orville – I enjoyed watching the ( seen 9 episodes so far ) show. Like the bits of humour with sci-fi. It’s never boring, has spectacular visual effects for a TV production. I’m glad people are watching it. Its been renewed, Im sure that under critically acclaimed brain of yours will conjure up even more ridiculous episode ideas for its 2nd season.
And you Seth MacFarlane, will get an Emmy one day, to which you’ll later do what Southpark did to their's.

THIS IS NOT FAMILY GUY!. if you are hesitant to watch this because of what Seth MacFarlane normally puts out you have nothing to fear. The comedy here is geared toward adults but it's not gross, disturbing, or crude. At worst it dips into the first rung of PG-13, but so did Start Trek TNG. So far the episodic stracture of The Orville show reminds me more of the Star Trek TNG, which is a great thing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Excellent show, that provides a lot of entertainment, fun, and interesting characters - more than we've seen coming out of actual Star Trek in years. It had one weak episode so far, but quickly picked up after it, and is only getting better since.
The futuristic setting is well done, there are interesting science fiction ideas, and humor complements the story, rather than take the front stage.
For a show that supposedly doesn't take itself seriously, it isn't afraid to tackle current societal & moral issues. While most of the ideas are what you might expect from McFarlane, its episode covering the current witch hunt culture on social media (and society at large,) where people are judged by the mob, forced to go on an "apology tour," and are then sent to "re-education," was bolder than anything on TV or cinema.

I mean - unless you knew that you wouldn't have even picked up on it because it is subtle, not something I'd expect (most shows shove their morals down your throat until you gag). It means that even if you disagree with something like climate change, you can take the point that "popular belief" shouldn't actually have an impact on what are objective facts. As it clearly stated, "I believe you are mistaking opinion for fact.".

Just so I don't get anger from people saying climate change isn't real - I don't care if you think it's real or not - just pointing out that this is how the show subtly addressed the most bizarre effect of social media on our current society.

Anyway, the show is just enjoyable, and the most believable "future" for humans I've ever seen. I can honestly imagine people like this in ANY workplace, including a spaceship.

The CGI/effects are pretty good for a TV, comedy knock off of the Star Trek franchise. This show is definitely worth the time to watch because it takes an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach to the Star Trek model of the 90s.

One final point. In the Trump era we find ourselves in, the massive disparity between the "professional critics" score and the average viewer review score is very telling. It once again demonstrates the disconnect between the out of touch people in the professional classes, the political class, and the media class, and the ordinary person. Do yourself a favor, ignore the critic reviews and jump straight to the real person reviews, then watch the show and enjoy.

The show shoots for idiocy and hits the mark - it is sophomoric and reduced the one black character to a Cliche. This show panders to the lowest common denominator and it needs a reboot to save this mess.

Wow, rarely do you see such a huge gap between the critic score and the user score.

I think the critics had trouble with The Orville because they couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. A spoof of Star Trek, like Galaxy Quest? A rip-off of Star Trek? Family Guy meets Star Trek? It was hard to define, so they just declared it "confused" and wrote it off. Well I **** love it.

Personally, I think the concept is something like: "What if Star Fleet wasn't an elite military organization? What if it was staffed the same way a Wal Mart is staffed? What if the crew were just ordinary people - lazy, horny, jokey, great at their best and ridiculous at their worst? What then?"

Finally, a series that captures some of the freshness of the original Star Trek. The critics are simply wrong on this one and while I usually agree with them I think they missed the point or do not know the Trek series going back 50 years.

Granted, as an old man I have lived out the series and I do not mean just by watching reruns. I recall the particular interest in this series in the 60's and how people felt about it. And while I did not comprehend it well as a 12 year old I did know and do remember that it generated a different feel than the last few Trek series.

Yes, that is subjective, but MacFarlane has captured that optimism and given it back with humor to an audience weary of dark vistas, explosions, and substituting Wild West stories for a plot in the last Trek films and TV shows. And, yes, I like Westerns.

In The Orville, however, the first six episodes alone the big questions present themselves as much to the viewer than anything in most of the recent Trek films.

The critics do not like MacFarlane's humor but this is a mistake. Using humor to show the light aspects as well as pointing out human flaws even through deliberate weak humor occasionally is welcome in a franchise run, apparently, by people who think that Trek fans are "really" just an action genre audience.

So my assessment is that this is as good right now as both TOS and The Next Generation. I'm even hoping that MacFarlane and his bullpen of writers will come up with an episode of a meeting with the 1920's surrealists, something you would never see in the last four Trek series.

So without being a part of the Trek franchise, The Orville out-Treks the recent installments both on the screen and on TV.

Thank God for Seth MacFarlane. I know he will appreciate the irony of that statement.

It just goes to show you, superficial quality and drama is more important to critics than substance. I mean, what's the point of perfect character interactions if the story doesn't go anywhere? The Orville doesn't care about the drama and it doesn't care what the pretentious critics think of it. The Orville is easily the best 'Spaceship' show to come out in years. Indeed, a lot of the Orville's colourful and diverse castmembers seem to be a homage to classic TNG characters. The show also tackles contemporary issues, without having a huge bias, which is remarkable and refreshing. I fell in love with the characters and after 6 episodes, I'm dying to find out where The Orville is headed next. Fingers crossed for a second season.

Oh, and all the professional critics don't know what they are talking about. All true sci-fi fans will love The Orville.

The Orville does Star Trek better than Star Trek has done it recently. Good cast, interesting stories. Things don't end up happy. McFarlane put out a really good show.

It reminds me why I loved Star Trek: TNG so much, this show captures the very essence of one of my favorite shows.

I'm not sure why the "critics" are giving it such a low score.

This show is amazing. I feel like this is the show that fans of Star Trek have been waiting for. Watching the show is like putting on an old pair of shoes. Think of this show as TNG if the show followed a crew of run-of-the-mill folks on an average ship instead of an exceptional crew on a top-of-the-line ship. The show deals with complicated issues in the same way that TNG used to but it lightens things up by letting the audience see that people are still people, no matter how advanced the society gets. All that being said, I feel like the best thing this show has going for it is that isn't bogged down with Star Trek's baggage. It gets to do all the fun stuff from Trek and the stuff the fans love, but it doesn't have to worry about violating decades of canon. If you are a fan of Trek, you should REALLY give this show a watch. You won't regret it. Expand

I'm surprised how much I like this show, I'm not usually into comedy but this works for me. Decent scifi, likable characters that I already care about, solid casting. I even like the Krill. I'd like to see it gain depth with long story arcs.

What's the point of "professional" critics if the people don't agree?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Orville is a bad rip off.
You have a "Worf" hatcher, a Bellana that break walls, a Data that's a mix of C3PO with crap.
Nothing original, and its not a humor show, and he best thing: they are trying to be serius with that thing.

Don't think because Mcfarlane is involved with this series, that it's a comedy. Because it isn't. This is pretty much Star Trek the Next Generation with at times a bit more comedic undertones. Which so far is a pretty good thing.

The Krill (sort of reminiscent of the Jem'Hadar) are being made into a real threat to this version of the Federation. They are pretty much the underlying storyline throughout the season.

I like the 'new' aliens. From the ultra strong race, the all male Moclans (the episodes which began as a joke on how exactly a race of all-males make children, turning into serious turn of events when the child turns out to have a 'deformity'; pretty much summarises this show) Hell I even like the slime being which is purely there for comedy.

If you liked Star Trek, then there's a pretty good chance you will like The Orville. Don't let the critics' reviews make you think this show is bad (good advise for any show) because if you like sci-fi, this show is doing a pretty damn good job at it.

This show came on automatically after another show ended, I honestly had no intention of watching it. But after 4 episodes it's my favorite new show of the fall. Definitely a throwback to the old style star trek, it's got great deadpan humor and is visually pretty cool. If you liked old star trek you'll enjoy this.

This show is amazing. It's like the old Star Trek, but with more relatable characters and many funny moments. Even during many o the dumb moments I found myself laughing. Listen to the user reviews and ignore the "Critical" reviews.

I love Seth McFarlane's cartoons. I came of age during the first seasons of Family guy so I was excited for this show!

Unfortunately, the only positive are the production value. The show's writing feels dated and the actor performances are terrible. It is a cringe fest to watch with frequent eyerolling.. If you are a middle aged man who sees TNG with rose-colored glasses, this show

If you are a middle aged man who sees TNG with rose-colored glasses, this show might be for you, if not, stay away from this crap. I gave it 3 episodes to not suck and it kept right on sucking. I would not give it a chance if I were you.

Star Trek Discovery, on the other hand, is an excellent Trek show that has kept up with the time. It's a striking difference that makes the Orville look even worse. Go watch that instead.

I wish this had been a comedy. Maybe it would not have sucked. Maybe we could have had something as good as Red Dwarf.

Seth, if you read this my man. I'm sorry. The critics are right as they usually are. Don't read too much into the positive user reviews here. Your goal should be to appeal to a broad demographic of people, not some small biased subset of 40-something year old white males.

Ok, I'm only watching this because I'm a complete sci-fi junkie. But this is basically a Star Trek TNG reboot with darker undertones and fart jokes. Its kinda like a pepperoni pizza with cut up hotdogs on top covered in maple syrup....things I enjoy separately but together I would only eat on a dare.

Star Trek with the dialogue of Guardians of the Galaxy! It works. The characters are likable & believable, and despite the humour, the situations are serious and the plots and actions of the characters actually make sense. (unlike that other show)
I don't know that's wrong with the "pro critics". Perhaps they can't classify this show. They should relax & just enjoy it.

The Orville is everything I wanted in a Star Trek series. As someone who grew up watching The Next Generation, I was hooked on this show by episode 3.

Given the choice between a show with the soul of Trek but not set in the franchise continutity (this show), versus the other way around (Discovery), give me Orville any day.

The show's smirky tone, embodied in MacFarlane's smug frat-boy demeanor as the captain, never quite gels with the universal humanism the episode is aiming for. [18 Sep - 1 Oct 2017, p.27]

Except for Norm Macdonald as the voice of an alien made of what looked like quivering gelatin, I didn’t find much that was amusing about The Orville’s space odyssey. ... From its opening scene with Victor Garber assigning Ed his ship to the final, unsuspenseful shootout with alien enemies, The Orville moved from one lull to another.
