The show is very generic. Not what I was visualizing when Amazon said they spent so much money to make this. Costumes are simplistic. Actors are mediocre. Writing is horrendous. It reminds of 2004 miniseries Earthsea. This is just a bad show.

On the bright side some of the landscapes are amazing so while sucking as a movie, it could be a great computer desktop background generator.

Rings of Power is disappointing in every way. How could they spend so much to produce so little?

Galadriel is deeply unlikeable, the proto-hobbits are psychopaths, and there don't seem to be many characters whose actions drive the story. Galadriel kind of floats around--sent to Valinor, picked up by a raft, picked up by Numenor, white-tree blossoms convince Numenor to go to war, etc. Instead of interesting characters making choices that push the story in unforeseen ways (like HOTD Rhaenyra choosing to fake Laenor's death and marry Daemon), stuff just happens and the characters float along.

Even if you forget that they didn't make any use of the source material, it's extremely obvious that none of the budget went into the script. Six episodes in and I'm giving up ! With one question though.
How in the hell can one studio, with a half a billion budget manage to deliver such p*ss poor spectacle ? It is puzzling.
We're certain the money didn't go to the casting or the writing ! Cringe inducing dialogues delivered by amateurs in the service of a snail paced plot, probably written by a 16 years old who focused way too much on shoehorning modern tropes such as ethnic diversity or the strong woman figure into the story, to a point it becomes absolutely ridiculous (and polarizingly counter productive).
And the more they try to emulate what Peter Jackson did with Tolkien's material, the more it falls flat and make this show failing miserably at being even remotely entertaining.
The ridiculous horse acrobatics of miss-clenched-teeths AKA Galadriel just definitely signaled me I was done wasting my free time with this borefest of childish gimmicks.
So I guess I'll give a point for the nice CGIs

It is the mostThis is the first time I can safely say that I absolutely HATE the show. This thing should never have seen the light of the day and everybody who participated in the creation of this show should be ashamed of themselves. It is the most mindless, superficial, pale, uninspired, disrespectful, and talentless media product of all time. Even in a million years I would not be able to gather all the necessary words to fully describe the disgust I feel after experiencing the Rings of Power. I can`t even start delivering a constructive criticism, because this show simply doesn`t deserve the effort. 8 episodes of sheer torture. Dialogues are simply words gathered into sentences. No substance, no purpose. Characters are just empty shells that find themsleves in situations. They don`t act like living beings. Mindless tools of the script, nothing more. Visuals - mediocre at best. The secenry flourishes with fakeness and CGI. Action/battles - just pathetic and too few for a BILLION dollar show. The plot - a giant, unfunny JOKE. I sincerely hope that the 2nd season will never ever come out. I could somehow cope with Netflix butchering The Witcher, but seeing Amazon butchering Tolkien`s meticulously crafted world is simply too much for me to bear. Expand

The worst writing on any show I have seen - bad acting, bad casting, bad costumes, bad continuity…..

I just don’t see where the money went - the CGI is ok but is only on par with much lower budget efforts.
I have been watching it only as it is one of the best comedy shows around.
The “army” of 500 warriors + horses + armour + supplies in three tiny boats… crossing the ocean in a day…whilst wearing their armour… honestly I have not laughed so much since “THE SEA IS ALWAYS RIGHT”.
I genuinely feel sorry for everyone who had high hopes for this show, cast and crew included.
The writers, producers and directors should be ashamed, there is no love of Tolkien in this show, just a lazy exploitation of a well loved classic.

There is simply some fundamental differencies for RoP to become a true Tolkien story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The writing is not only lazy and sophomoric, but it completely disregards time and space. Middle Earth, for example, is massive, yet elves can swim for hundreds of miles in open ocean and a journey by sail of 1,800 miles from Numenor to the Southlands apparently takes one day. Those are some swift schooners. This show is not true or accurate to any writings by J.R.R. Tolkien concerning Middle Earth. None. Zip. Zero. Nada. #TheSeaisAlwaysRight Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was never supposed to be this difficult to adapt. Tolkien wrote the story and handed us the blueprint for a breathtaking adaptation, but for some reason, someone felt they could do better and changed an excellent story into a literal faecal mess. Sure the CGI is cool, but that should complement a show and not be the highlight of the story. The lead character is so unlikeable one will begin to wonder if she is actually a hero, antihero, or villain; are we expecting a secondary protagonist later on? Expand

The writing is very dumb, unfortunately there's no way around it.
The original material that this show is based on by JRR Tolkien has won the hearts of millions of people, yet this show that is based upon it, completely changes its main characters (Galadriel is not a wise sorcerer and seer, but a teenager with a sword, Elendil is not one of the greatest warriors of all time and a noble one directly related to the king, but a lowly ship captain, and so on and so on.
The acting is subpar for many characters - Galadriel is just aweful, the queen of Numenor is just bad, and so on...
It doesn't even look like an expensive show which is mind boggling, since it's the most expensive in history...
and the writing..... the vilagers are running away from the Orcs, so they destroy their fortified watch tower, and hide in their on ground village, in the tavern? I mean.... good lord this is just sooooo amazingly bad.... Galadriel jumps from the boat in the middle of the ocean literally to swim back 500 miles alone in sea. I can't even.

First thing, Im putting aside 2 facts from my score.

1- The series mostly ignores the original writing story. Its very loosely based on it, using certain places, characters and facts, but most of the content is completely "original". I don´t just mean they "filled holes" with original stuff, (thats quite needed as the tolkien writings just described this era as historic events with no real novelization wich could be portrayed on screen) But also that this "original stuff" heavily modify or even contradict those writings.
As said, my score ignores this fact, as i watched the show purely as a fiction work "loosely based" on a certain book.

2- The "diversity thing". As I´m watching the show as a completely new thing unrelated to the book, im ignoring also the complains about changing or adding certain features as elves being dark skinned, or whatever. Still there is something strange and that feels forced, and im not refering to "black elves or female black dwarfs", but to the fact that diversity is absurdly forced into nonsense. Example: The queen of Numenor being black, while al numenoreans, including her father, are white, and the fact numenoreans are also a ethnic. The same happens with the leader of the hobbits, thats still stranger as they are a relatively small and absolutely closed isolated group. Still, while it seems a weird move to pretend a specific group or society is racially diverse even when its so closed or isolated, I can overlook it as well.

So why 3?

Well, at the start the show is somewhat watcheable, and the production and screenplay is very good. The point is: the show is plainly boring. It has some interesting moments, but its quite irregular.

It also abuse the "pretended deep conversations" stuff. Somehow feels like they forced those a lot, maybe to try give it a more book or lyric feeling vibe, emulating Tolkien style, but with little success.

And lastly, the characters. Its hard to empathize or sympathize with any of them. Galadriel seems to idealized, but at the same time is quite insolent and whimsical. Halbrand starts as a somehow Aragorn clone, on aesthetics but also on its background. Elrond-During may be actually somewhat ok. The most interesting plot actually would be the one around Arondir.

So, somehow we have a show with incredible production resources, great visuals. But with a somehow generic plot, generic characters, and as much, average writing, wich feels boring after few chapters hence with some rollercoasting moments.

It is a bland and corporatized version of Tolkien, written by a production-line writing staff with a very poor understanding of the lore, and an even poorer understanding of good storytelling. The lead characters are horribly one-sided, uncharasmatic and the entire story is bereft of logic, respect of timelines, and every time the story needs it, some convenient story prop falls down from the sky (Sauron made a map and note informing they will make a land of evil? really? the Dark Lord wrote down his evil plans while laughing evilly and caressing his dark mustache? really?). I could keep on going about the cringe dialogue, the poor casting choices, the terrible pacing, and the general total lack of quality. But the show speaks for itself. Atrocious. This should be buried and forgotten. Expand

Looks and sounds great, but I've no idea where the story is going. Really hurts the story to make Sauron the main villain at the start since we already know they won't defeat him here.

But really good cosplay but... cosplay. So amateurish. And part of that is a confusion about who this is for. As averge LOTR fans are adults and always have been . And hobbit is hated by fans. So this kiddy friendly blood free pc watered down show for all ...isn't really the books or the films. So I don't really understand why it exists. Lore matters but not to me. I care about quality writing and story and a feel for adventure but sadly that is lacking along with weak performances. Also the casting is... well not great and the cgi is like a video game. Overall it's fine but not what we expected or wanted or needed. This is another missed opportunity and the sheer cost alone makes the entire endeavour kind of disgusting. I've watched all five of the currently aired episodes so as to be able to provide the show with a fair review. The first two episodes had me excited for the potential that they represented. Had I only watched those episodes I would have oscillated between a 6.5 to 7.0 rating. By the end of episode 3, I would have given it about a 6.0. By episode 4, I had abandoned all hope that the show would be able to provide anything more than a CW-level narrative (e.g., Smallville), and watching episode 5 has further confirmed this view. The show's rating now sits at a very firm 3.0 for me and it would take a significant deviation from current formulaic plot structure and surface level dialogue to convince me that this show will ever offer anything more than it currently does.

As with any viewing experience, your mileage may vary, and what you as a viewer look for in a show may differ from what I look for. That being said, I will try to provide the pros and cons of the show as I see them.

Pros:

1. Whoever did the 3d modelling for the animals was on point. I feel that the wolves and wargs were extremely well-done and have a great unique-but-recognizable quality to them.

2. The content to which (I presume) they are building towards always gets me excited (i.e., the battle of Dagorlad).

3. If you enjoy movies such as Disney's Star Wars films and/or the Marvel movies, I feel like there are definitely some similarities in terms of plot structure, dialogue, and visual presentation.

Cons:

1. I don't think the writers understand how to build meaningful social relationships. Etiher that, or they don't understand how to accurately convey a meanigful social relationship. Following from this, the character's decisions lack meaning and substance. As an example, characters who are vehemently opposed to something will (in the same scene in which they are decrying their outrage) completely switch their set of ideals at the behest of a poorly made and cliche-driven speech.

2. The narrative is so concerned with not rushing to the finish line, that literally nothing of substance has happened in the last 5-episodes that I've watched. To contrast this, I would have been nearly through the entire movie triology of the Lord of the Rings by this point.

3. Characters behave in unpredictable ways. For instance, Nori is unphased by a man smashing into the ground in a ring of fire, or by his apparent use of magic that warps her very reality, but, when said man accidentally gets some "magic ice" on her arm (through no fault of his own), and then attempts to apologies, she runs away in fear.

Summary: I'm meandering and my girlfriend just made me a danish, so I'm going to go and eat that. I'll probably forget that I wrote this but, watch it if you want to. I think it's god awful, but I also thought the marvel movies and the new starwars were awful, not everyone agrees. I strongly feel that this is PG13 level writing at its most mediocre, and I guess I just expected more from the Lord of the Rings. Thanks for reading.

The rings of power is just that.
Its only purpose seems to be to show financial potency.
Things look really expensive but completely lack taste and soul.
One episode after another i feel myself just kind of sitting there for another hour waiting for something. The story is so slow that it feels like they should have made another movie or two instead of a series. The characters are so bland that they become completely expendable. All of them could leave the show and i wouldnt mind.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only reason I give this a 1 instead of a 0 is some scenic shots are decent. Characters, plot, most of the acting are mediocre. Sauron becomes an angry incel that wants to destroy Middle-earth because Galadriel will not marry him? WHAT?! Even a kindergartener could write a better plot than that. Galadriel is one of the worst characters ever portrayed on screen, and is in total contrast to the wonderful portrayal by Cate Blanchett. Bezos should go to Tolkien's grave and beg forgiveness for this besmirchment and blasphemy. Expand

I actually appreciate a diverse cast, but you can't substitute good writing with diversity. A good series or movie will have a diverse cast, and the viewers are so immersed that they don't even notice race or gender. The rings of power rubs your face in it. The pacing is very slow, the characters have no depth, and to make the female characters stand out, they make them loud and insufferable. They basically gave all the females masculine personalities and the males feminine personalities. This makes all of the characters unrelatable and unlikable. There is a trans person in the cast, but they are not trying to look like they've transitioned? Instead, they have a shaved head, a mans face, with boobs in a wedding dress? I'm no expert but isn't trans supposed to be transitioning into the opposite sex? The writers are idiots who think they are being edgy by pushing norms to the extremes. Instead, they've upset the whole Tolkien fan-base by corrupting the lore with their political ideologies, and piss poor writing. Expand

The writers have taken so many liberties with Tolkien's Middle Earth history, you need to look at it as a completely different story unrelated in anyway to his writings. For example, this story takes place in the First Age, about 3,000+ years before the LOTR's Third Age. Galadriel stated that her husband Celeborn was dead, when at no time in any of the writings does Tolkien present that story line. There is a great deal of conjecture if the "Old Visitor" is Gandalf. Per Tolkien's writings, the wizards (Istari), 5 in total, do not arrive in Middle Earth until the Third Age; thus, neither Gandalf, Saruman, Radigast nor the other unamed wizards should even be considered in these stories.

Again, while it is enjoyable as such, it should be looked at as a completely separate story with similarly named characters to Tolkien's stories.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've never written a "review" before. This show is beautiful, has it's good moments sometimes but I'm sorry, mainly a disappointment for a lot of reasons. First, it's unlogical a lot of times. For example: Elrond swore to durin not to tell anyone about mithril. Then he proceeds to tell Celebrimbor and when Celebrimbor say he needs to tell gil-galad about mithril, Elrond say he can't broke his oath... Right after he broke his oath. These moments are annoying but let's go to another reason. In my opinion a lot of times Galadriel acts like a children. She is idk how many hundreds if not thousands years old, I expect a little maturity sometimes if your that old. In the latest episode (6) how she threats Adar at the end was cringy af. (I'll let you live bcause... then proceeds to almost kill him afeter 5 seconds of that) and I could go on... I'm sure these ppl are good actors but the writing was poorly executed... It's trying to be woke at times, but sadly it doesn't got the inpact... At least for now. This ofc is only my opinion. Sorry for the grammar, still learning. Take care Expand

This show has so much to do with Tolkien, as a carjacker has to do with the vehicle's owner.
So, I will review it as a Fantasy movie in itself.
The images are great. That was good spent money. Usually, when I see low-quality Fantasy movies (like this one), images are a fragile part.
The dialogues are appalling. That looks like a middle-school teenager writing fan fiction. Therefore, I qualify them as juveniles.
The characters lack empathy. The actors didn't help. It was two hours of me watching and trying to connect with any of them; seriously, it was impossible. It was a long two hours.
The main character looks like "Karen meets Mary Sue". Obnoxious, she is the opposite of a Commander. Being a Commander is something you earn. This swimming Karen is a quitter and an idiot. Not Commander material.
And definitely, such a person would not have survived a month in a Medieval world.
I am one of the few that ended up seeing all the episodes of Season One. I don't intend to see Season Two: I have completed my penance watching Season One.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here is the positive I have to say:
The show definitely invested a lot of effort into making the environment look good; The scenes of the mountains, lakes, rivers, and landscape shots do look good. I enjoyed Robert Aramayo's performance, I think he's doing a good job. Lloyd Owen's performance is also enjoyable to watch. The Last positive thing I have to say is that they occasionally make this show feel like Middle-Earth.
Negative:
I have a lot of negative things to say about this show but i'll sum them up in two broad strokes: First, while the show has a good story on paper, they have executed it horribly so that the story doesn't make sense. Second, while the show has a handful (a very small handful) of positive moments, the negative ones far outnumber them and they take you out of the show, ruining what few good things the show had going for it. What do I mean by this? Well, for one thing the dialogue is particularly bad to the point that you have to backtrack to understand what is being talked about, removing you from the story. You end up asking yourself "why?" at different points rather than "wow". As the story on paper seems good, the writers went about executing it terribly. For example: In the sixth episode, it's not a bad idea to bring the tower down on the heads of the Orcs to stall them; this is a good idea on paper. However, an ancient elven tower that can be brought down by burning a single rope that held up a single piece of metal that was holding the whole tower together, is not a well executed idea. And the show has so many moments like these spread from the first episode to the last one that I find myself scratching my head and wondering "why?" more often than I find myself saying "that's cool".
Overall, I rated this show as a 2 because it has a couple good things going, but the negatives keep me from really enjoying it, taking me out of the story, thus getting a bad score.

Viewing it as a generic fantasy, things do not improve: the script is banal and has unbridgeable holes that will never be explained. Many things happen just to get the plot from point A to point B, but without any motivated reasons behind them to make these passages believable. Galadriel have chosen to make her selfish, quite stupid (she always gets her attitude wrong making everyone dislike her) unbearably arrogant and with the wisdom of a teenager despite the fact that when you start the series she is already more than 4,000 years old. The pseudo-philosophical dialogues made me laughing sometimes. The dialogues are mostly flat, never moved me and sometimes made me cringe at their banality. If at first I tried to turn a blind eye, as the series goes on I found increasingly awkward dialogues and ridiculous narrative choices. The entire plot seems to be written following the "perfect screenwriter's manual" in order to create as much drama (often exaggerated and poorly justified), romance and "guess who" situations as possible: it seems to be written by an AI. Only a few minutes were devoted to the creation of the rings then, and everything was resolved in no time at all, with a cringe-worthy sufficiency. Celebrimbor looks like a senior accountant, Elrond (who is one of the best characters in the series) looks like a young career insurance man. The authors took a story that is indisputably one of the greatest works of all time and trying to adapt it to modern times. You can't do that. If you need a setting that fits your series, please come up with your own ideas. In summary, the problem is not so much that the authors have strayed from Tolkien's writings in adapting the story for film, which is inevitable when transporting a literary work to film, but that the spirit of the original work has been slaughtered: this stuff is not Tolkien, but not even close. I see from reading the reviews that there are also those who have enjoyed this series, and let me be clear that I have nothing against them: in the same way, I who like to drink wine but also am not a true connoisseur, sometimes happen to drink a poor or mediocre wine without even realizing it: simply at that moment I feel like drinking a wine and whatever they serve me served in a nice goblet I will happily quaff it. This fantasy is like a mediocre wine that could (perhaps) be appreciated if it were not presented as a top-of-the-line wine. I've had a lot of good parties with €1.75 wine. But if you serve me a wine by presenting it as a top-of-the-line wine (an Amarone della Valpolicella or an Marqués de Murrieta for example), and when I taste it I understand that it is a €1.75 supermarket wine, I spit that wine out. Hence the zero given to my review. Expand

A mellékszereplők is semmilyenek. Kár volt erre időt szánnom. An attempt to use the Lotr brand to make money. Absolutely terrible writing and acting. I can’t even watch it for dumb fun.

Don't fret though, it still has its merits. People will write theses on the show, it will be taught in film schools around the world, it will be used as a vivid example of how SJW and Woke culture got out of hand and corrupted itself and a lot of other things, and it will be remembered for a long long time. Nada funciona nessa série. Feita de forma amadora, não desenvolve bem as personagens, muitas cenas perdidas, diálogos sem pé nem cabeça.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After watching 6 episodes of this travesty I am officially done! It's beyond awful in terms of writing and general credibility... Tried to watch 7th episode but I couldn't fathom to watch it beyond opening scenes. The writers absolutely ignore law of physics e.g. surely it wouldn't be wise to lift a burning wooden beam with bare hands but our "heroes" are able to with ease. Volcanic ashes should be scorching hot, not this **** we see in the show. Galadriel trying to act caring doesn't do it for me, she sucks. And harfoots, I can't stand them. There's nothing in this show that makes me want to watch it further. I just don't care what happens. Amazon should just count their losses, cancel the show and sell the rights to HBO to save it, or CW to bury it even deeper in poop. Expand

Rings of Power is so bad that made Peter Jackson's trilogy shine even brighter.

This one represents resentment and entitlement; while the other personified sympathy, conservation and the type of perspective that only a loving demi-god (animist, perhaps) might have. The amazon show is SPIRITUALLY BANKRUPT, and so was the Wheel of Time series they made because materialism is akin to nihilism; and the production staff are lost in the throes of self-interest. They're wading through the mire of modern industry, using software tools as their crutch: not one of them capable of creating art. Expand

4 is a fair score.

It’s an insult to Tolkien, makes you want to turn it off anytime the main character weird-flexes, and displays the quality of writing you’d expect from a hallmark movie—but sure… there ARE worse series. Like you know,

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Worse than i hoped, better than i expected. It might be an insult to everyone and everything involved, both in lore and in real life, but its not absolute **** Especially the Plot twist in the last episode was one of the few amazing things in there Expand
