This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The show in general, no lore accounted for: The show does not look like a billion dollar show, the effects are at times good, at times 10-years-old-video game like, the acting is sub par with the exception of, of all characters, the ones that show all of 5 minutes, female frodo and female Sam(Nori and Poppy) all the rest of the cast feel forced and carton like, heck even Shannarah was better madel, the score is sub par as well, does not feel middle-earth-kind of epic

Now the worst part, regarding lore, but the page is not letting me write all that so I'll say only this, Harfoots being ancestors of Hobbits is like saying that Imladris is an older city than Rivendell, they are the same but in a different language, and they did not exist until 3rd age, as a branching from the race of men

Galadriel was the most powerful being in middle earth, one of the most powerful, wisest, kindest, fairest and loved being in the whole world, both ME and Valinor, almost as magically powerful as the Valar(gods) themselves, and WISE, not the assinine warmonger she is, she could raise mountains with a twist of her hand, so putting her in armor that she never wore, and wielding a sword, which she never touched, diminishes her, not empowers her

I would talk more about lore attrocities, as most of the show is an attrocitie itself, but meta wil stop me from doing so

Why did they have to call it Lord of the Rings? It is a generic fantasy show which happens to have characters named after Tolkien's characters in it. That's all of LOTR you will get.
Even if you ignore the franchise, it is still a bad show.

Even if you ignore the franchise, it is still a bad show. Wooden acting, lifeless and boring characters and a, in my opinion, badly written story with terrible pace. If you are seeking for a good fantasy show, try Game Of Thrones or House of the Dragon instead if you haven't already.

The dialogue is a cheap imitation of Tolkein's lucid prose (the Peter Jackson films did a much better job of this), the acting is flat and the characters are distinctly unlikeable - especially Galadriel. Two hours/episodes in at the time of writing. I have given it two stars for the budget more than anything. It is nice to look at but offers no substance.

This is not lord of the rings / middle earth. Tolkien's work has been torn apart. He would be ashamed of this creation. The characters are one dimensional caricatures with few to none redeeming qualities. Take Galadriel as an example. Horrible Karen of a character. Single minded. Unintelligent. Uncaring. Unwise. Shows no real emotion. Has a mind only for revenge. And all too flat in the role. Not even the need for revenge is portrayed convincingly. The exact opposite of the real character Tolkien wrote. They try to make her look good by making those around her perform worse physically. But it cannot save her character, and instead makes the entire race of elves look bad. As one of the leads in the show, her character exemplifies all that is wrong with this show. Unfortunately this trend is seen with nearly all characters shown so far. Don't even get me started with the dwarves or the "Harfoots". The show writers had a wealth of A-class writing to draw from. Decades of carefully written lore, world building and character design. They used none of it. Instead they give us this flat, unintelligent, travesty. Which dishonours the original works of the author, and offers nothing in return beyond its budget.

This show is a complete travesty and an insult to Tolkien's memory, his legacy and all his fans. Anyone who gives it a positive rating clearly never read any of the books or is just on Amazon's payroll. I could write a massive review airing all my grievances with this dumpster fire but that would be redundant and also below my dignity. Suffice to say it's just generic fantasy garbage larping as a LotR adaptation. It's tacky, it's lowbrow and it's tasteless. Perhaps even more-so than Game of Thrones. PS - MetaCritic is the only site which doesn't hide or mass purge negative reviews like IMDB (owned by Amazon) or Rotten Tomatoes does. Expand

-pseudointelectual dialogues, which could have been written by Tolkien if he had no talent
-bad plot
-the pacing is terrible, I was bored while wathing it. The show starts to many plots at once so it ends as "jack of all trades", with nothing significant happening for 2 hours. Its basically an overstrethed triler.
-costumes look very cheep. You can clearly see that armors are made from plastic. It would be OK for an cosplay, not for the most expensive show ever. -Elves do not look live elves. The person who decided they should have short hair must have though they make a Star Trek show because they look more like Vulkans than elves . I was like "what the hell is Spock doing here?". - the characters are bad, the Galadriel is typical "strong independent women"/Mary Sue archetype, who feels so smart and powerful, only because everyone around her is an incompetent idiot. Its not how you make a good "strong female character". -the show follows typical "multiculti" fashion where every little village with 100 or so people has ethnic structure of New York. Its just not immersive. The authors also have a wired fixation of putting interracial couples everywhere.

Overall the show is just bad, boring, and does not feel like Tolkien.

I will start with the elves, in this series they humanized the elves to the point of being only humans with ears, they have nothing that characterized them, they are not beautiful, wise or stoic, the motivations of the elves themselves lack meaning and are simplistic and flat. the dialogues do not contribute anything to the story and are extremely boring and heavy (sometimes Even dumb). the characterization of the characters is the worst of this series, nothing achieved and absurd. It is very very loosely based on Tokiens fantastic works. The visuals are decent but the script, characters and action are terrible to behold. You should watch this just to see how bad it is. Its also super woke and cares more about social politics than entertainment. Everything the characters do does not make any logical sense. The main female lead is also a Mary Sue who is always angry at everyone. Rather than watch this, go back and re-watch the actual Lord of the Rings movies and the Hobbit, check out the extended versions which have many hours of added integrated footage and scenes.

The only thing it has going for it is the good CGI which is expected with a $1bn budget but weirdly the didn't use any of that budget for the armor which looks like it's made out of plastic. On top of all of this they have put awful romance story arcs into which I'm just confused about as this is supposed to be LOTR not a chick flick? 20 years ago, Peter Jackson managed to make a masterpiece in terms of convincing graphics, dialogues, stories and characters that are interesting to watch.

As a result, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is just an attempt to make money on the screen adaptation of an excellent book work, and along the way to cram in all the current agendas. Unfortunately, this was done clumsily, and that's why such a result.

Didn't like the music, the scenery. It does not look like the movie series,. unfortunately.
It's also too slow and kind of boring.
Galandriel and Elrond are nice and all, but the series as a whole is just not captivating

Anyway, some of the character changes (Galadriel) were a bridge too far. Galadriel was a powerful witch, not a warrior. The troll scene was CRINGE. Don’t change beloved characters. Just invent new ones if you want a more modern take. Also, if you are going to spend almost a billion dollars, why not get a couple of big stars to do more of the heavy lifting? I wish they’d just been honest and hadn’t included any of Tolkien’s characters or places but had instead just called it a new world “inspired by Middle Earth”. So… dull.

This show is $89.4 million per episode. The Fellowship of the Ring was $93 million which is 3 hours long. The acting is not great, the costumes are from rep theatre, character choices are nuts (swim from New York to Liverpool), characters themselves aren't engaging or appealing. The music is distracting (sorry Bear McCreary), and a forgettable theme tune.

I'm really missing elves with long hair. A personal thing, but that's how (after Jackson's movie) I see elves in Tolkien. I guess a thousand years ago fashions are different in real world, but it is soooo distracting in this. The dialogue is worse than prequel Lucas.

Compare two characters – Galadriel vs Rhaenyra Targaryen (House of the Dragon, RoP main competitor). Rhaenyrais so much more engaging and kick ass, without even raising a weapon.

This show, after two episodes, is really bad for what has been spent on it. Watch The Fellowship of the Ring instead.

I amar prestar aen… The world is changed.
Han mathon ne nen… I feel it in the water.
Han mathon ne chae… I feel it in the earth.
A han noston ned gwilith… I smell it in the air.
Much that once was is lost. For none now live who remember it.
It began with the forging of the great rings…

I'm getting goosebumps of remembering sat in a cinema, staring at a black screen, hearing Blanchett's voice, watching it for the first time. 26 seconds to the title reveal and I have more of an emotional connection than two episodes of this series.

$89.4 million per episode!!!

Galadriel is an annoyance, which is a shame since she is supposed to be the main character. The first two episodes don't make me care about the characters, or the world, and that breaks my heart. I leave my review of the first two episodes of the series.
In my personal opinion the beginning of the series is quite weak. The interpretation of some canonical characters are far removed from their literary counterpart. Lady Galadriel shows an unseemly and annoying rebelliousness, adding that she shows no wisdom. Especially the fact that she lived in the kingdom of Doriath in Beleriand years ago and it seems that all teachings of Melian were left aside in this version. In reference to Lord Elrond and Celebrimbor, there is not much to say, except the physical appearance that is not very successful. The story of the elf Arondir and the woman is completely unnecessary; the argument that tries to bring the couple closer is bad and relapses into cliché. In the case of hobbits, I quite liked it. It brings freshness to the slow central argument, despite the fact that no character is canonical. Likewise, the contribution of the meteorite character generates additional intrigue. Finally, the most redeemable so far are the scenes of Kahzad dum. The characterization of the male dwarfs is very well done, even the challenge invented in the series, winks at Vala Aulë himself, the one who created the Naugrim; more resilient in all deadly physical sorrow than other races. In the end, the series does not promise what it announced, however, there may be further development as it progresses.

It’s a Dungeon and Dragon Fan Fiction not the lord of the rings.

The pace is terribly slow, the elves doesn’t look like Middle earth elves but rip of from any d&d, dragon age game.

The OG character (Elrond, Galadriel) are not respected and are totally different people (not the same psychology).

CGI are expansive but at the same time look like a Green Screen Festival.

Locations looks empty and void, Khazad Dhum or Valinor, it looks like they are 10 people at max in each scene.

The Hobbits look like junkies of the forest.

This show borrow the name « LOTR » but represent something totally different and superficial that look empty on the surface and in the details.

Really really dull

Script: Full of sudo-wise quotes that don’t make sense 2/10

Costumes:
Men: 7.5
Nothing stands out - looks decent Dwarves: 8
Harfoots: 1
If you can embroid, you can make clean edges to items of clothing. They shouldn’t all be torn and in rags.
Elves: 2 Doesn’t look like they read Tolkien’s description of them - their armour looks like plastic figurines.

CGI:
5 average - very expensive. I don’t feel it will have an enduring staying power. It looks too clean and uniform. We see hundreds of entirely identical elven ships. Most of the elves in amour look like a copy and past in a computer.
World doesn’t look lived in - has a stock footage quality for selling TVs Kinda documentary feeling in first episode - strange for a high fantasy.

Don’t recommend you watch.

It's no doubt that a lot of people were prepared to hate it no matter what. Firstly, there has been a lot of care and attention to the scenery, the music, and the CGI. Shooting in New Zealand was a great choice (although I'm biased, as that's my home). I don't think the costumes have had the same attention to weathering and general wearing in as they had in the Lord of the Rings movies or Game of Thrones. After the first episode I was pretty angry, as it was far worse than I thought it would be, however I definitely softened after the second episode. The dwarves are done well, and there is some proper characterisation and interaction that was entertaining. As far as the diversity goes, that's just a factor of today's world. If it wasn't multi racial, then it would have been cancelled for not being progressive enough. This doesn't mean though that it destroys the show though. Look at something like The Great as an example. It's also colour blind, but a very funny and engaging show. Unfortunately here, there is not a strong story or good dialog. I realise we are only two episodes in, however, the comments on this not being Tolkien's world are accurate. This is a generic fantasy story set in a somewhat Tolkienesque world. I think it's a valid criticism that the writers have not respected the source material, at all. I think the real mistake was in the way the show has been marketed from the outset. If you are old enough to remember back to when Lord of the Rings was released, Peter Jackson did regular youtube updates talking about progress and the way that he was interpreting and adapting the source material. Before the movies were released we knew that he loved the book, understood it, and was really trying to deliver something that fans would enjoy. Unfortunately Rings of Power have had cast interviews where they talked more about the progressive elements of the script - the first female black dwarf etc. It has given the view that being progressive and at times political is more important than the underlying story. It's the same issue that fans had with Star Wars ("The force is female"). Going to war against your own fandom or trying to preach to them is unfortunately only going to result in what we are seeing now. We now have fans who believe that the stories they love are being weaponised to push an agenda - even if it's not really the case. In summary, the show looks very pretty. It's obviously had a lot of love and attention, but would have benefited for the same amount of love and attention to a lot of other areas as well. I really don't think this is going to be the Game of Thrones replacement that Amazon was hoping for, and I would be very surprised it makes it to season 5 as they are hopiong. Expand

Bref, quelle grosse daube !

If this is your first foray into Middle Earth I cannot stress enough, start with the books (or audiobooks) and then the films, and skip this. This is just bad television. The show moves as slow as molasses, the script is incoherent and the characters of all poor reflections of themselves from Tolkien’s original works. The casting is bad, the acting is bad, the costumes are bad, the script is bad. The only thing that's passable are the sceneries but even that is not as good as what we'd expect from a $1B production. The show took names and locations from the Tolkien masterpiece and just rewrote lame and woke fan fiction instead of sticking to the spirit of Tolkien's work. That is not what people who respect the original author's work want!

Don't waste your time and watch House of the Dragon instead!

A true bastardization of the greatest fantasy ever written. It's pretty bad when most people's only praise are the scenery and visuals. Everything else is atrocious - acting, plot, dialogue - it's all flaming garbage. I wish I could unsee it,A true bastardization of the greatest fantasy ever written.
