This is a slap in the face to Tolkien and his great work. I will admit the scenery look good but that is it. Lazy writing the new characters are boring and what characters the fans know are a shadow of their former selves. This is just sad

Whoa boy! I cannot believe I did not listen sooner. What are amazon execs thinking? This was all cast-typed incorrectly. It makes no sense. And there is stuff in here that does not mesh with the trilogy movies whatsoever. Aren't the same writers on this show? Could they not get the original writers? What was this show trying to be? As a life long fan of Tolkien, his books, the Peter Jackson trilogy, this show destroys the lore of LOTR. If they wanted "inclusion" they could have made a story around the other regions that aren't as fleshed out in Middle Earth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to give this show a chance, but holy Hobbit, what a mess! And since some trolls have destroyed the positive ratio of all most helpful negative reviews on Metacritic in just a few minutes, only one thing helps - to resubmit again! Where to start? Elves whose hairstyles are reminiscent of a poorly made Pop music video from the 80s and for whom actors have been cast who don't look like immortals at all. Plus: A one-dimensional main character who, miles away from the shores of Middle-earth, goes for a swim in the biggest plot hole since the penultimate episode of the final season of Game of Thones - and who, thousands of years later, still behaves like a defiant child whose self-made paper ship has just been sunk. For whom nothing is at stake at any time, because this very special elf is able to kill a troll in 30 seconds, which took Legolas and the Fellowship almost ten minutes in the mines of Moria. Infantile Harfoots, whose scenes are sometimes reminiscent of a sitcom from the 50s, but where you wait in vain for the laughter to fade in in the background. And when two elves, without provisions, without horses and above all - without any presentable delegation, walk miles to get an audience with a dwarf prince and one of them (who, by the way, is the most important blacksmith in Middle-earth) must simply turn around to make the long, arduous journey back...then, dear viewer you truly wonder whether this Is High Fantasy or a Brigand's Tale.

Fortunately, it turns out that the diverse cast, which some "so-called trolls" have questioned in advance, cannot and will not have any influence at all on this review. How could it, given that we live in an age in which heated discussions are justifiably triggered when historical or fictional films are not cast with appropriately ethnically correct leading actors because people want to renounce the "white-whashing" of times past. It is anything but politically correct and respectful to miscast, for example, Scarlett Johannson in the live-action adaptation of the Japanese anime masterpiece "Ghost in the Shell" or John Wayne as Genghis Khan. Who would think of casting Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan with Caucasian actors, like in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"? And just to make it absolutely clear: I think that's a good thing! But why do the opposite here? Especially when you know in advance that the majority of Tolkien fans seem to worship all his works as "history" with almost religious zeal.

Leaving aside the pointlessness of such a discussion: not everyone will have the opportunity to see the first two episodes in the cinema on a big screen, so that at least some of the really great images can unfold their effect. And this despite the fact that the CGI effects are unfortunately clearly perceived as such and some things look like ultra-graphic settings in a computer game. But if, like most people, you can only watch the whole thing on a normal TV, then the sheer glamour of this big visually blown-up nothingness fades very quickly and you focus on what really makes a good TV series: A compelling script with main characters that you can and want to sympathise with. Unfortunately, the vast majority here is reduced to a moderately written soap opera full of clichés. And no - I don't expect the quality of the whole thing to improve significantly, at least not in the first season, but I sincerely hope for a more differentiated development of the main protagonists in the future - especially that of a certain person.

In the end, all that remains for me is the realisation that this is probably more of a retelling of the fairy tale "The Emperor's New Clothes". Only this time, the majority of critics praise the sheer finesse and epic grandeur of the "outfit", whereas the majority of hardcore fans will put it more honestly: "The emperor isn't wearing anything at all!"

Sadly, after watching the first two episodes (which felt more like a slog or doing homework than coming along on a grand adventure) I can write my expectations are crushed. It’s all been said in the other reviews — beautiful scenery and expensive wardrobes can’t save basic, paint by numbers bad writing and plotting, cardboard thin and cliche characters, action sequences that unintentionally play as farce or comedy even, etc. Im done with it. I will not watch another episode unless by some miracle Amazon decides to replace each and every show runner, writer and producer who worked on this first season. Expand

First of all don't watch this show if you have a degree in Tolkien's work or if you are a fan of his work. This show is miles away from what Jackson produced past years that even The Hobbit trilogy wasn't that bad.
This first episode doesn't sound like one. No presentation of the timeline, you have to digest a lot of information about the world, the characters, bad and good guys but still you don't understand the purpose of this show.
All the characters look british (no offense) and their acting is really bad. I was really disappointed that the dialogs between elves have been act in english and not in elvish as you should expected from a multirace fantasy franchise.
CGI is not good not bad and fortunatelly they still can fly helicopters to take beautiful landscapes from NZ however the OST is inexistant.
Finally costumes and armor look cheap as hell. Next time call me if you need a wardrobe's door to dress somebody in the most uncomfortable way we would recommend you to purchase some at a sweedish furniture store I know.

I knew it was bound to be controversial and I wanted to give it a try, but thats unwatchable. If you want to watch anything "Lord of the Rings" related, you will not find it here. They have created a generic fantasy show, slapped some Names created by Professor Tolkien on it and called it "Lord of the Rings". Even if you take away their blatant piggybacking on more creative minds, this isnt worth watching. Its focus on controversial current year politics takes every bit of fantasy out of the script, their inaptitude to tell compelling stories denies all immersion, their disregard for character arcs ruins even the most unimportant original side character. It is not a Zero or a One, the visuals are sometimes stunning to behold. That is thanks to the visual effects artists, whose work is the only thing consistently great in modern Hollywood. If you must see for yourself, watch the first episode. But overall, there is sadly nothing in recent TV or cinema history I would recommend less. Expand

It might have still been palatable but the writers clearly aren't capable of producing their own Tolkienesque dialog and their childish attempts to sound deep are cringeworthy at best and downright offensive to Tolkien's legacy at worst. While I have too many complaints to fully list out here, I will say the butchering of Galadriel's character is perhaps the most heinous betrayal of the source material I have ever come across in an "adaptation" (hard to call it that in this case). They took one of the most enigmatic female characters ever written and turned her into a modern trope like Michael Burnham from Star Trek Discovery. Overall, this is shaping up to be the worst thing I have ever seen on television. The showrunners should be utterly ashamed and should never be allowed near a film or TV series again. Expand

She only has one note and that is unpleasant. It doesn’t help that the face that she shows is completely contrary to the character of Galleriaal that millions of people already are familiar with and have come to know and love. And I don’t have a clue what they’re trying to do with the accents here. It’s another disjointed mess that doesn’t really seem to make any logical sense. Are the hobbits Irish now? And why are they all hobos?

To me the elves do not act elf like. They do not seem or act like elves. They’re acting like humans with human motives and human behavior. Like I’m watching a very expensive cosplay. This makes most of the oven characters feel very forced and false. Nothing will take you out of the feeling of middle earth like seeing little elf bullies. Why does every heroic female character now have to be bullied as a child? Not only is it trait but it takes away from the grandiosity of Lady Galadriel‘s character. Her fighting like a common soldier also does this as she is one of the most powerful beings in middle earth. It’s not that she couldn’t use a sword it’s that she never needed to. again it’s this attempt to make a Elves seem human that takes me out of the story and makes middle earth seem like a generic fantasy.

The dwarf soever were appropriately to work like. In fact they were the only characters I liked. Do you want to know who one of the best characters is, it’s Disa. Yes, all of us who have been accused of racism actually love Queen Disa. How is that for irony? I would have to say the dwarves in general are the only decent characters so far in the entire show. On the other hand Lenny Henry is absolutely terrible so I guess you can still call me racist. To be fair it’s hard to separate who is delivering a bad performance because of the material they have to work with. This script is dry as the appendices from which claims to derive its inspiration. I was falling asleep and honestly I couldn’t finish the second episode. There was nothing in this series to compel me nothing for me to get excited about. well that’s not entirely true I was giving a little bit excited in the wrong directions seeing all of the elements of the show that were absolutely contrary to what Tolkien wrote. I’m not talking about cast I’m talking about the actual mythology of middle earth. The stories about what happened and who did what. They had a great guide to follow and yet they felt the need to change everything. In the end it we are left with a generic fantasy which is not all that exciting that has Tolkien‘s name on it. It’s very disappointing. Compare this:
“ you have not seen what I have seen“ Ugg!

seen”. “There’s a hole here. I must go down in to see what’s inside” “Why?” “ to see what’s inside.”
“ True creation requires sacrifice“- wtf?

To this:
“Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."

I wonder if these guys really think they can write. To attach Tolkien‘s name to this vapid dialogue is laughable.

Amazon has just broadcast to the world just how much they don't understand about Tolkien. Before I begin, I have nothing against the actors cast for the roles. They did what they could with maybe not getting cast in the right roles and the horrible mish-mash plot they were given. Most of my problems stem from the fact that Amazon has consistently declared that they are following the source material and it is clear that they blatantly have not. First, the show struggles with any sort of consistent pacing. To top that off, the show never stays with any one scene subplot to develop it. Further complicating the matter is despite the fact that the show is "canon" and that they "tried to stick to the source material", the show couldn't be further from Tolkien's actual works. The show runners made the prologue far too confusing for noobies/casual fans and changed it far too much for avid fans.(I will give them the fact that they are trying to compress over 2,000 years of prologue, so that can't be easy, and, yes, I am aware that they only have rights to certain things). Secondly, it felt generic at best and a woke/politically correct rip-off of LOTR at worst. The GC is fine, if a little bit too shiny. The map transition are cool, but the common person doesn't know where in Middle Earth it is. The elves look too human and the costumes either look too distressed, not distressed enough or just plane weird. Thirdly, the character changes that have happened and all for the worst. Galadriel and Elrond have the biggest, most glaring personality changes (thanks to the show, Galadriel has been transformed into a whiny, punch-first-ask-question-later Karen while Elrond has been stripped of his respect and all the weight of his heritage). In addition, Celebrimbor (who is in canon, most likely near Galadriel's age) is waaaay older than he should be and Finrod has suffered a complete dis-service because he is turned into some sort of Sauron monster hunter when the opposite is true. They have also decided to leave out important characters like Celeborn, Celebrian and Anarion in favor of adding in their own characters and subplots. My fourth complaint is the dialogue. Some scenes felt flat while others felt far too forced. This bad writing was compounded with some questionable actors casted. My fifth complaint is anything and everything to do with the knock-off "hobbits". They are not necessary in the slightest nor were they even there. Stop trying to make this the LOTR where hobbits save the day. A further complaint, I have no problem with including "character of color" (thought I find that inclusion shaky at best; Tolkien wrote his works as a mythology for England/Norther Europe, not the world. I would have the same reaction if suddenly we suddenly had to include Native American characters in Mulan or European characters in an African folktale). My problem is the consistent use of only one. We have ONE black elf (not a very smart one at that), ONE black dwarf and ONE black human. Come on Amazon, you're not even trying to do anything beyond tick the boxes so that the politicians won't hate you. My last complaint is the music. Don't get me wrong, thus far the music is the only consistently positive thing to come out of the show. My problem is the fact that the music feels generic and does not at all capture the majesty and gravitas that Howard Shore was able to capture with his score.

While I am aware that we have only seen the first two episodes of this epic length series, I am not terribly optimistic about where it is going. My final thoughts: loose the "hobbits", loose the speechless Gandalf look-a-like, stop putting characters in the wrong locations and actually READ the source material. If you are a die-hard Tolkien fan, this show will let you down again and again. If you are looking for a generic fantasy show because you finished GOT and you need to play something while you are folding laundry, go for it.

ALL the characters suck, the esthetics look like a high budget production but the actors make it feel like a low budget series you'd see late night on the sci-fi channel. I honestly don't care about the diversity but It is pretty cringe when its so obvious when its purposely placed to check a box or quota. And for the ppl saying its getting review bombed by users, NO. Its getting the opposite by the critics because of the diversity they don't want to say anything bad about it because of the main female lead (whos a pretty bad actress) and the ppl of color. The mainstream critics will not say a bad word about it because of that and that alone. Its a real shame. Expand

Absolutely disrespectful towards the Tolkien legacy, and I'd say it actually goes against all he loved and wrote about in his books. As a generic fantasy it would have been just mediocre; as a LotR series, it's a complete insult.

Sure, the sets and cinematography look stunning, sure it's a big budget fantasy series, but it stops there. The Showrunner had to change many aspects of LOTR lore to assert their own agenda that it totally ruined the show. They created and twisted existing characters so much that it's unrecognizable. If they didn't use LOTR and just created a totally new fantasy series, everyone wouldn't have any problem with it, but by doing show they just shot themselves in their foot. This defiantly doesn't feel like Tolkien's world. All the paid critics and bots working for Prime won't save this series, the fans have spoken, this is going to be the BIGGEST FLOP in Cinematic HISROY! Expand
