It's just ok. Which is disappointing for a show called The Lord of the Rings. With the material they had, it could have been and should have been so much better.

I liked the way the show was built even though there were some pacing and storytelling issues. It fits the Tolkien universe well enough, given time compression requirements for the story.

Great production. The photograpy of the series is brilliant, it has changed the scale and the way to watch fantasy series. The actors are very good, all clearly embrace their roles and knew how to bring to fans new and old their roles.

About the story itself, it has a rhythm tempo, increasing in grandeur and events near the end, very much like what happens in the books of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

Yes, there are changes/adaptations of the Lore de Tolkien. But, I liked the adaptations, they are very well made and necessary, in view of the copyright acquired only from the Second Age, appendages and Third Age.

It's sad when a work like this ends endlessly, I'm already looking forward to the next episodes.

It's a story about unique, at times unlikely and even more rarely unfortunate friendships between characters. It's a story about pride, greed, deception, and fantastical marvels to be achieved. It's the best place to get a glimpse on Valinor, the Undying Lands, Lindon, Eregion, Kha-za-dum, Numenor and Mordor to name a few - placed that weren't exceptionally well if at all covered in Peter Jackson's films. Amazing acting in place by the actors of Galadriel, Durin, Elrond, Disa, Adar, Aldir and many others. Underappreciated gem in the TV history. A must see! Expand

The production value and plotting are excellent, and the casting is on point. Morfydd Clark as Galadriel provides one of the best performances in a fantasy role in a long time, and will likely be seen as her breakout role for years to come.

As someone who grew up reading everything Tolkien, this show has reawakened my love for Middle Earth in adulthood. For the first time in decades, I find myself wanting to dive back into Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle Earth, as the show has done such a great job of putting a new spin and making a coherent narrative out of the various drafts and letters written by Tolkien about the Second Age.

The fact that this show is clearly planned to occur over several seasons, with a strong commitment, is also clear, as the plots we saw in Season 1 are sowing the seeds for future growth and development. Hoping there isn't too long of a wait for Season 2!

I will elaborate further on my thoughts in this review after the season finale, but I am tenatively giving it a 7/10.

So far it has surprised me how interestingly they've covered parts of the Second Age so far, I am particularly excited by who I assume is going to be a Blue Wizard as they are characters I have been longing to see depicted on the big screen. I find it really exciting to see stories written for characters who were otherwise very empty in Tolkien's writing, among them being Galadriel.

The negative is that the Galadriel/Numenor point of view so far has been less interesting, I find myself just wanting to see more of the Hobbits or Dwarves. Some thing are pretty cliche, the ending of Episode 7 was pretty corny for example.

Whether I drop the rating or not will really depend on the identity of The Stranger. If it is Gandalf as many suspect, it will drop incredibly as that topples the current balance of creating something new and retaining what Tolkien established.

This show is a disgrace to tolkiens work. It is plagued by bad and lazy writing, uninspired dialog, obvious political agendas, logic flaws and many contradictions to Tolkiens work.

The problem is, that this show is being made for an audience, that has no clue about Tolkiens work, which is much more fleshed out than the Hobbit and LotR.

But even if you ignore the existing Tolkien lore you will find so many things that are uninteresting, unlogical and just feel fitted or shoehorned.

Its just a shame what Amazon did to this franchise, a real shame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To start off, let me say that, objectively, the series probably deserves somewhere between a 4-6 out of 10, but I am marking it lower because, subjectively and as a passionate, longtime Tolkien fan, I dislike it very intensely.

I'll start off with what works, as it is a short list. The visuals are mostly spectacular, as most others have noted. There are a few shots where the CGI is spotty, but overall it's hard to complain about how the show *looks,* unless it is to point out that it all feels a bit too "clean," lacking the grittiness of, say, Peter Jackson's original trilogy (but this can be said for almost all modern cinema/television).

The music is mostly excellent, with the one exception for me being the Harfoot music. I understand what Bear McCreary was aiming to achieve there, but it strays the farthest from what we might call the "Middle Earth" sonic palette, and I simply don't care for it.

The acting is generally serviceable to good. In fact, I think given better material, most of these actors could have done a terrific job.

That's about it. Now on to what DOESN'T work. I'll try to keep it as short and sweet as possible, which will likely be easier as I intend to avoid spoilers.

This is an adaptation, yes? One might expect an adaptation to at least attempt to, I don't know, ADAPT its source material with some degree of fidelity and faithfulness. This show makes no such attempt. There is not one narrative event that takes place in season 1 that is actually lifted from Tolkien's writings. (The event that closes out the final episode is technically a thing that does happen, but even it happens in such a way as to be totally out of order and thus defeat the purpose of the thing happening at all).

Here we have a show where, rather than tell the story that does exist in the Second Age laid out by Tolkien, the showrunners instead decided to take the names of some characters and places from the lore, add a few new ones, and invent an entirely different story altogether. Far from just "filling in the gaps," the show actively alters established lore and directly contradicts it at every turn.

Defenders of the show love to point out that Peter Jackson made changes in his LotR trilogy adaptation, as if there's some legitimate equivalency to be drawn. Yes, he made changes, but his changes were generally made in service to the translation of the story as it exists in literary form to a form that would actually work on screen. Many of his changes were simple omissions of events or characters that don't meaningfully affect the plot. Others were done in order to enhance the story for a visual medium - but the story remained intact! At the end of the day, his LotR films were laudably faithful, and struck the appropriate balance between book fidelity and quality filmmaking. A film trilogy doesn't become the most awarded film franchise of all time for no reason, fwiw.

Defenders of the show will also point out whenever a reference is made to something that is actually in the lore - as if these little "easter eggs," essentially, are enough to justify every other change, and somehow boost the show's lore accuracy in any real way. "Oh, this character here is going places they never went, doing things they never did, participating in plot structures that make no sense, never happened, and run roughshod over the carefully constructed source material? Who cares, because look, they made a quick reference to Earendil! See, the show IS lore accurate!"

As an adaption of Tolkien, the show simply fails utterly.

The other big problem here is the writing. From the moment-to-moment dialogue, to the overall plot/narrative structure and pacing, I think this is one of the worst written shows I have ever seen, and I'm not being hyperbolic. It isn't simply, as some have said, "painfully average," where the writing isn't great but is competent enough that you can keep your brain engaged and actually enjoy what you're watching. On the contrary, it is so lazy, contrived, nonsensical and unbelievable, that the only way I can imagine anyone might enjoy it is to turn their brain off completely and gawk at the pretty imagery.

Characters don't behave in logical, believable ways. Their motivations don't make sense. Big, important characters routinely - and by sheer, unbelievable coincidence - end up at just the right place, at just the right time, so the plot can move forward. Sequences of events don't seem to connect in a logical or meaningful way. So many scenes, especially in retrospect, feel like one-off D&D moments that have no consequence or bearing on what follows. Fast travel is abused absurdly. It often feels like the writers just had a checklist of "moments" they wanted to have, and devised a bunch of lazy plot contrivances to get us to each "moment." A travesty, all in all.

I'm running up against a character limit here, so I'll leave it at that. The show is an embarrassing disgrace, simply put.

Zero interest for the next season. 2 is a fair rating for this show. Most of the positive reviews are obviously fake and paid for. I hope no one else hate watches Season 2. There are a million better things to do with your time than watch this or other Hollywood garbage.
Some laughable highlights:
-Galadriel swims across and ocean
-Almost everyone survives a volcanic eruption
-Galadriel teaching Numenoreans how to fight
-Galadriel throws a group of soldiers into a jail cell -The Woke diversity in what is a story set in ancient Europe (I'm not white btw)

What we have is literally multiple blockbusters production values poured ad nauseum into this series. However, that aside, it actually has a bare boned plot, with characterization that is as straight forward as it is. In comparison to the more low key, House of the Dragon, it pales in term of that. However, it is still a good watch and near the end of the series, it does pick up on its last quarter. Expand

But clearly the main reason for that is because the show runner are fully realized that their one and only strongest point of this whole presentation, is the world that Tolkien has carefully crafted back in the days. What they've forgot, is that Tolkien builds all the character in his story with the same amount of attention that the world would've gotten. So when your source material is solely a footnotes of the world once has been completed, this shows falls exactly the same scenario as The Hobbits Trilogy did, by making the characters in that story as stereotypical as possible.

Lastly, the visual effects is not even that impressive honestly. I would love if with all that budgets they are pouring, we could get a cinematic experiences of the camera zooming in and out, tracking and overlapping throughout this expensive looking background. The same way Blade Runner 2049 does. But surely, hiring an established cinematographer is not in their capacity. So, the end result of that near 1 billions of a budgets just became nothing more than just an expensive looking backgrounds.

The thousands of years of elven master smith is taught about smithing and alloys by outsiders. The long lived elven Galandriel has't accumulated enough wisdom appearantly during her hundreds of years to handle diplomacy like a pro. Wonder what she's been doing instead. This show is terrible.

Dear Amazon, I don't want The Lord of the Rings for a "modern audience". I want The Lord of the Rings created to honour the true spirit of the man who wrote this material. Show some respect!

This show deserves nothing more to be disposed to the ash-heap of history with most other garbage produced by Hollywood in the past 5-10 years.

Not every movie/tv adaptation can authentically contain the politics of the modern day as it absolutely does not fit that world. I would be turning in my grave if I created a fictional world only for blue-headed, college educated unprofessionals to be "adapting" my work to push their own politics.

Amazon, you should be ashamed. How dare you.

If Sauron adapted the Tolkien, this would be it. This is a rape of Tolkien's works. Let us see what went wrong:

--- Storytelling (0/10): A dead lizard would have written a better story. Comparing this fecal matter to Tolkien's master storytelling is like comparing feces to pizza. Pornos have better stories. Writers must have read a nursery rhyme once (and a lot of leftist lunacy, obviously).
--- Identity politics and idiotic American propaganda (@$#$/10): Listen, Americans, do whatever you want over there, but keep the rest of the world out of it. This is not Tolkien, so either do right with him or stop this show. Stop your countrymen from this blasphemy.
--- Action scenes (1/10): Monty Python had better fight sequences. --- Casting (1.5/10): 95% casting is blech (literally vomits). You had to choose good and fitting actors from a world population of 8 billion and you chose these? Same feelings for Galadriel as I had for Joffrey Baratheon (she was supposed to be awesome!).
--- Dialogue (0/10): Again, pornos have better dialogue. Infantile at best.
--- Lore and Tolkienism (0/10): Has nothing to do with Tolkien and his works. Worst adaptation of all time, can compete with Velma on that. Completely destroys what Tolkien stands for, his ideals, morals and themes. Uses allegory, allegory! If you don't know that you are not supposed to do that, you are a public enemy of Tolkien.
--- Other things (1/10): Man, f you.

In conclusion, I would totally recommend this show...to the CIA so it can be shown to terrorists as an extreme form of torture, though all Geneva rights will be obliterated.

P.S. Shills, congratulations on selling your soul to Sauron (literally Amazon). May you never find peace or contentment. If only Prime had spent as much money hiring people who knew what Tolkien meant as they did on shills and fake reviews.

Again, I hope all the orcs behind this villainy find eternal damnation.

I did not even refresh my memory about any other LOTR lore before watching, so inconsistencies with the original lore aren't even part of my review.
The show still sucks! The pacing is WEIRD. The characters are unlikable. Durin was the only character I kind of liked. Galadriel is one of the worst characters I have ever seen. This is the reason why I, as a woman, prefer male main characters. Because they don't know how to do good, strong women! There are some nice looking sets, and scenes, but that's it, and that is not enough to make me care about what happens.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to love this. Peter Jackson's trilogy is my favorite piece of entertainment ever. I've read all of Tolkien's work, and like to think I have a decent knowledge of Arda, Middle Earth, etc.

I went into this completely blind not listening to any of the hype or criticism surrounding it so I could go in and judge it based on its own merits.

Sadly, it disappoints far more than it succeeds. The writing is absolutely atrocious. None of the plot threads fit together at all, and the timeline is all over the place. One scene concerning the Harfoots encompasses over a week, then you jump right back to Galadriel's story, which has only moved a couple hours. I think they would have benefitted from telling a simplier narrative than trying to shove so many plot points down our throats so quickly. It's also clear that this is a work of fanfiction by the writing team. Characters in this act nothing like the characters in the books. Things that happen in this show directly contradict Tolkien's books, like Gandalf arriving by meteor instead of arriving on a boat with the other Istari, or Galadriel getting on a boat in episode 1 to go West when in the novels she committed herself to Middle Earth at the end of the 1st age, over a thousand years prior, and changed her relationship with her own husband, who is absent from this show outside one reference in episode 7. It also tries to misdirect you as to who Sauron really is, but anyone with a passing knowledge of the source material know who Sauron is immediately, and the twist did not work at all. Character motivations make no sense whatsoever a lot of the time and change for no reason just so the plot can happen. Oh, and the Southlanders plan of leaving their hilltop fortress with only one entry point to fight in their village instead with no walls or bridges needed to access instead...WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT?!

The acting is very hit or miss. Charlie Vickers, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Sophia Nomvette, Lloyd Owen, and Joseph Mawle are all excellent in their roles. Unfortunately, the shows really hinges on the performance of Morfydd Clark, and DEAR GOD, she's more wooden than a Numenorian ship. She is just awful as Galadriel. For the first half of the show (where virtually nothing interesting happens), she does nothing but treat every single person around her like crap, demanding things from strangers and throwing a tantrum when she doesn't get her way. This is not how Tolkien envisioned Galadriel at all.

The production value is also hit or miss. Some of the cities like Numenor and Kazadum look fantastic one moment, then very cheap the next. The orcs by and large look fantastic most of the time, but the Numenor and Elvish Armor looks incredibly cheap. There are also some terrible CGI sequences (the warg scene with "Gandalf", the creation of Mt. Doom) that feel very rushed and cheap. And at $60 million an episode, NOTHING about this show should come off as cheap or rushed. There's just no excuse.

And lastly, it is very clear that they want to make Sauron and the orcs layered, and that IS NOT what Tolkien wanted. There is literally an "Orcs lives matter" speech from Adar in Episode 6. Sauron and Morgoth are representations of pure evil. Making them complicated just cheapens the courage and sacrifices of the elves and men who fought to defeat them. Tolkien didn't live in a world filled with grey. Evil was evil to him.

In short, this show is a disaster. It's boring, poorly written with very inconsistent production values, some good performances overall weighed down by too many poor ones, and just plain disrespectful to the source material. And that has nothing to do with the race of the characters (see my favorite performances above), it's that they don't honor the characters and stories Tolkien wrote. They wanted to tell their own story with Tolkien's characters, and that to me is just unacceptable.

3.5/10. Do not recommend

starting with the good part of the show, the few city's featured are, for the most part beautiful. that's where the good things stop

The writing is amateur at best, overall a waste of money on poor story telling that has mediocre characters, bland twists. All other components of a show fall apart because of poor writing The characters are not well thought out and dont capture me in the slightest. besides the one dwarf i wouldn't care if the entire orc army took them all down.

Finishing all the episodes and looking back, i will probably not watch it again, and after more thought it reminds me of a film students attempt at a remake of a J. R. R. Tolkien story which is arrogant to say the least, on top of poorly attempted.

to think all that money was wasted on bad writing with bland charters is heartbreaking. It makes me question where did all the money go is this some kind of money laundering?

Tolkien is rolling in his grave after this one. 1/10 . the 1 for the visual of the citys because there great. everything else, not so great

I’ve read a couple of the books and watched all of the movies therefore, I consider my opinion to be of some value on this matter. I have been waiting for this series for a long time now and I have to say I am not disappointed on it. The story is intriguing and not a typical plot that is 100% predictable, I can say it’s actually had me on the edge of the sofa more than once. Really wondering what is going to happen in the story and genuinely intrigued about the motives and desires of the characters. They are complex enough to make you feel like they are real, they have their own agenda but at the same time have loyalty. The story is complicated enough to keep your interest without making you want to pause and rewind which can sometimes happen with sagas. It has the right amount of drama, thrill, mystery, fantasy, adventure and even a bit of romance (without being cheesy). Expand

The storyline deviates so far from what Tolkien wrote that it might as well be a completely different world. The characters are written so totally different from those that Tolkien created that they shouldn't even share the same name. Character dialogue ranks among the worst that's ever made its way onto a screen and the acting is equally poor. The wardrobe looks like it all came from thrift stores. I'd go on and on, but it almost seems pointless. I'd like to point to something in the show that actually stood out as being well done, but there just isn't anything that passes the test. Don't waste your time watching this. Even if you've never read Tolkien's works, this show will leave you asking yourself why you wasted your time. Expand

After watching Rings of Power for the first time it was pretty bad with one of the worst season finales I have ever seen, but after watching Rings of Power for a second time... It's even worse.

When you try to put Rings of Power up against its contemporary House of Dragons, it's like watching a High School Film thesis in comparison.

It's a LOTR series, so I expected a lot of gatekeepers in the reviews - and I wasn't disappointed. Haters gonna hate!! For me it's a 10/10. Great acting, great story, great costumes, great special effects.

The destruction of Tolkien's world. This show is boring, terrible directed and without any kind of sense and logic. It seems like it was done by rookies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Shouldn’t have been made. MC is a horrible rude person, but a woman, which is a poor shield for her behavior. The hobbit story line sucks. There is some redeeming stuff, but the fact that Amazon was censoring reviews makes me feel the urge to rate this harsher to counter is. Expand

A very expensive attempt to brainwash people subverting a legendary story written by one of the worlds best story tellers. It is crystal clear the writers and show runners are completely out of their depth. Very sad state of affairs. I would love to be a fly on the wall of the finance department when the results come back about viewer drop count after the first 30 mins. Very boring film unless you want to use it as an exercise video for sets of eye rolls. Expand

We need to get the message across to the people who make the decision to produce this kind of horror. People don't like poorly written scripts, mocking Celtic mythology, idiotic costumes, and dominance of female protagonists.

Putting the butchery of Tolkien's world aside and the creep of wokeism, this is just plain and simple boredom on a screen - bad acting, writing, story telling and action with a sprinkling of ok music and visuals. Waste of time.

This dross is in line with what modern Hollywood does to popular nerdculture icons - buys them up and then perverts and degrades them, either through sheer writing incompetence or through active hatred of the original material. There's certainly both on display here but straightforward incompetence wins by a mile. Amazon paid for the most expensive entertainment undertaking in the history of the world and put the most inept showrunners in charge of it. The writing is actually shocking, given the cost and prestige of this project. And considering you can say the same about their previous bungled adaptation of a beloved fantasy series - the Wheel of Time - a strong pattern of arrogance, stupidity and incompetence starts to emerge for the Amazon Studios. And the attempts of the Amazon top brass and the showrunners to explain the universal rejection of their amateurish, fanfiction-grade product by pretty much everyone except the journalist by painting Tolkien fans with your usual "-ism" brush is just a sad cherry on top of this cardboard cake. This was a lazy production. I knew they would need to fill in some gaps in the story so that was expected, and I don’t care about the diverse cast, but they simply ignored the basic lore. Harfoots in the Second Age just because they wanted to have “hobbits” in the show, female dwarves with no beards, average sized Numenorians. With all the money they spent on this you think they could have afforded a more accurate take on Middle Earth. Expand

Great characters, felt like a spin on who did it but rather who or where is Sauron.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stunningly terrible writing and direction. The show is amateurish when not flat out boring. Decisions made by main characters don't make sense, their personalities are uninteresting, and developments in story lines are either nonsensical, physically impossible or asinine (i.e. an Elven master smithe never heard of creating an alloy, and when coaxed to be gentler with the blending of metals, in the end he just tosses in a turd of mithril?). Even extras look and act like mobs of amateurs. We so wanted to love this show, I even purchased a 75 inch TV to watch it. If there was a negative score, I would give it. Expand

I am no big Tolkin guy but the Peter Jackson films really had a magic to them where as this show feels like a low budget CW show with expensive effects tacked on...The Casting and acting is by far the worse of the already bad..The girl that plays Galadrirl is a short homly , unlikable Karen. Galadrial is supposed yo be tall and imposing while buetiful and comforting at the same time..Even the Elves are just like men from the slums, the Elves, the beings of magic with an efinity fir nature are just dull dudes..
Thus show is embaresing.

This show makes me sad, what a hatchet job on the LOTR. I hope they kill this and we can all just forget this ever happened.

Atrocious script, unbelievably stupid and contradictive. Poor acting, very bad directing. Gets a point for scenic shots, nice drone footage.
