Didn't like the music, the scenery. It does not look like the movie series,. unfortunately.
It's also too slow and kind of boring.
Galandriel and Elrond are nice and all, but the series as a whole is just not captivating

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This sucks. Sorry for my English, but it boiled over. The question is that it is possible to create a new universe, any one, and introduce any modern agenda into it. But why try to do it with a classic, especially when it's contrary to lore. As a big fan of Tolkien, I can only say: Tolkien forgive us. Expand

Anyway, some of the character changes (Galadriel) were a bridge too far. Galadriel was a powerful witch, not a warrior. The troll scene was CRINGE. Don’t change beloved characters. Just invent new ones if you want a more modern take. Also, if you are going to spend almost a billion dollars, why not get a couple of big stars to do more of the heavy lifting? I wish they’d just been honest and hadn’t included any of Tolkien’s characters or places but had instead just called it a new world “inspired by Middle Earth”. If this was an original show my review might have been higher. Expand

So… dull.

This show is $89.4 million per episode. The Fellowship of the Ring was $93 million which is 3 hours long. The acting is not great, the costumes are from rep theatre, character choices are nuts (swim from New York to Liverpool), characters themselves aren't engaging or appealing. The music is distracting (sorry Bear McCreary), and a forgettable theme tune.

I'm really missing elves with long hair. A personal thing, but that's how (after Jackson's movie) I see elves in Tolkien. I guess a thousand years ago fashions are different in real world, but it is soooo distracting in this. The dialogue is worse than prequel Lucas.

Compare two characters – Galadriel vs Rhaenyra Targaryen (House of the Dragon, RoP main competitor). Rhaenyrais so much more engaging and kick ass, without even raising a weapon.

This show, after two episodes, is really bad for what has been spent on it. Watch The Fellowship of the Ring instead.

I amar prestar aen… The world is changed.
Han mathon ne nen… I feel it in the water.
Han mathon ne chae… I feel it in the earth.
A han noston ned gwilith… I smell it in the air.
Much that once was is lost. For none now live who remember it.
It began with the forging of the great rings…

I'm getting goosebumps of remembering sat in a cinema, staring at a black screen, hearing Blanchett's voice, watching it for the first time. 26 seconds to the title reveal and I have more of an emotional connection than two episodes of this series.

$89.4 million per episode!!!

My wedding ring is from the very makers of the One Ring in Peter Jackson's adaptations - I love the series that much. The pace of the show is rushed in important areas like character and world development while being laborious and long in areas where I felt like dozing off. Galadriel is an annoyance, which is a shame since she is supposed to be the main character. The first two episodes don't make me care about the characters, or the world, and that breaks my heart. The cinematography and CGI is beautiful, but it is overshadowed by terrible dialogue and lore inaccurate story lines. Amazon should have known better... Expand

I leave my review of the first two episodes of the series.
In my personal opinion the beginning of the series is quite weak. The interpretation of some canonical characters are far removed from their literary counterpart. Lady Galadriel shows an unseemly and annoying rebelliousness, adding that she shows no wisdom. Especially the fact that she lived in the kingdom of Doriath in Beleriand years ago and it seems that all teachings of Melian were left aside in this version. In reference to Lord Elrond and Celebrimbor, there is not much to say, except the physical appearance that is not very successful. The story of the elf Arondir and the woman is completely unnecessary; the argument that tries to bring the couple closer is bad and relapses into cliché. In the case of hobbits, I quite liked it. It brings freshness to the slow central argument, despite the fact that no character is canonical. Likewise, the contribution of the meteorite character generates additional intrigue. Finally, the most redeemable so far are the scenes of Kahzad dum. The characterization of the male dwarfs is very well done, even the challenge invented in the series, winks at Vala Aulë himself, the one who created the Naugrim; more resilient in all deadly physical sorrow than other races. In the end, the series does not promise what it announced, however, there may be further development as it progresses.

It’s a Dungeon and Dragon Fan Fiction not the lord of the rings.

The pace is terribly slow, the elves doesn’t look like Middle earth elves but rip of from any d&d, dragon age game.

The OG character (Elrond, Galadriel) are not respected and are totally different people (not the same psychology).

CGI are expansive but at the same time look like a Green Screen Festival.

Locations looks empty and void, Khazad Dhum or Valinor, it looks like they are 10 people at max in each scene.

The Hobbits look like junkies of the forest.

This show borrow the name « LOTR » but represent something totally different and superficial that look empty on the surface and in the details.

Really really dull

Script: Full of sudo-wise quotes that don’t make sense 2/10

Costumes:
Men: 7.5
Nothing stands out - looks decent Dwarves: 8
Harfoots: 1
If you can embroid, you can make clean edges to items of clothing. They shouldn’t all be torn and in rags.
Elves: 2 Doesn’t look like they read Tolkien’s description of them - their armour looks like plastic figurines.

CGI:
5 average - very expensive. I don’t feel it will have an enduring staying power. It looks too clean and uniform. We see hundreds of entirely identical elven ships. Most of the elves in amour look like a copy and past in a computer.
World doesn’t look lived in - has a stock footage quality for selling TVs Kinda documentary feeling in first episode - strange for a high fantasy.

Don’t recommend you watch.

It's no doubt that a lot of people were prepared to hate it no matter what. Firstly, there has been a lot of care and attention to the scenery, the music, and the CGI. Shooting in New Zealand was a great choice (although I'm biased, as that's my home). I don't think the costumes have had the same attention to weathering and general wearing in as they had in the Lord of the Rings movies or Game of Thrones. After the first episode I was pretty angry, as it was far worse than I thought it would be, however I definitely softened after the second episode. The dwarves are done well, and there is some proper characterisation and interaction that was entertaining. As far as the diversity goes, that's just a factor of today's world. If it wasn't multi racial, then it would have been cancelled for not being progressive enough. This doesn't mean though that it destroys the show though. Look at something like The Great as an example. It's also colour blind, but a very funny and engaging show. Unfortunately here, there is not a strong story or good dialog. I realise we are only two episodes in, however, the comments on this not being Tolkien's world are accurate. This is a generic fantasy story set in a somewhat Tolkienesque world. I think it's a valid criticism that the writers have not respected the source material, at all. I think the real mistake was in the way the show has been marketed from the outset. If you are old enough to remember back to when Lord of the Rings was released, Peter Jackson did regular youtube updates talking about progress and the way that he was interpreting and adapting the source material. Before the movies were released we knew that he loved the book, understood it, and was really trying to deliver something that fans would enjoy. Unfortunately Rings of Power have had cast interviews where they talked more about the progressive elements of the script - the first female black dwarf etc. It has given the view that being progressive and at times political is more important than the underlying story. It's the same issue that fans had with Star Wars ("The force is female"). Going to war against your own fandom or trying to preach to them is unfortunately only going to result in what we are seeing now. We now have fans who believe that the stories they love are being weaponised to push an agenda - even if it's not really the case. In summary, the show looks very pretty. It's obviously had a lot of love and attention, but would have benefited for the same amount of love and attention to a lot of other areas as well. I really don't think this is going to be the Game of Thrones replacement that Amazon was hoping for, and I would be very surprised it makes it to season 5 as they are hopiong. Expand

Bref, quelle grosse daube !

I really don't think I'll make it through this season or any other season after it. Thankfully we have the films and books. If this is your first foray into Middle Earth I cannot stress enough, start with the books (or audiobooks) and then the films, and skip this. This is just bad television. The show moves as slow as molasses, the script is incoherent and the characters of all poor reflections of themselves from Tolkien’s original works. The casting is bad, the acting is bad, the costumes are bad, the script is bad. The only thing that's passable are the sceneries but even that is not as good as what we'd expect from a $1B production. The show took names and locations from the Tolkien masterpiece and just rewrote lame and woke fan fiction instead of sticking to the spirit of Tolkien's work. That is not what people who respect the original author's work want!

Don't waste your time and watch House of the Dragon instead!

The show lacks creativity, depth and proper execution. The plot is filled with cliches and predictable twists, making it difficult to stay invested in the story. The characters are underdeveloped, with flat personalities and uninteresting motivations. The world-building is also unsatisfying, with poorly imagined settings and magic systems that lack logic.

Additionally, the special effects are subpar, detracting from the overall experience. The dialogue is often cheesy and stilted, making it difficult to take the characters or their struggles seriously. The pacing is slow, with extended scenes of filler content that do nothing to advance the plot. The show also fails to do justice to the source material, making it a poor adaptation.

In conclusion, "Rings of Power" is a subpar fantasy show that fails to live up to its potential. It fails to engage the audience, and leaves them feeling unsatisfied. I would not recommend this show to anyone looking for a well-crafted fantasy series.
It truly is a disgusting abomination that should be purged from existence. Tolkien would sue the writers of this show for this unfathomable disgrace.

Amazon, in its wisdom, decided that it was only necessary to secure the rights to the appendices of The Lord of The Rings and hire a bunch of talentless woke hacks from Bad Robot/Secret Hideout in order to create a new work based on Tolkien's characters. The result, as one might expect, is the typical unwatchable garbage that these kinds of people consistently produce. Who is Rings of Power supposed to be for? It's too slow and boring for children, too inauthentic for Tolkien fans, and too stupid even for normies. There are no famous or highly-regarded actors, so how is it possible that they spent a billion dollars making this? The dialog is trite, the acting is terrible, the characters dull as dishwater, the plot and pacing are yawn inducing. The woke feminism and forced diversity sit uneasily in a setting in which they don't belong. The direction is uninspired and cheap, with dialog often delivered in close-up and fight scenes choppily edited to mask the lack of choreography and ability of the actors. The Rings of Power is just another defilement of popular culture by today's woke Hollywood. It deserves to fail, and fail hard. Expand

The director, the scriptwriters and the actors, none of them are fans of Tolkien, the actors mostly live giving interviews and never quote Tolkien. This series is an aberration, it should never have been created.

They created characters unnecessarily.

Shortened the timeline.

They completely changed Galadriel history and personality.

They exchanged ethnicity of characters/races.

They should have created something without using Tolkien name, it would have been better, because this could be anything, it’s just not LOTR.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If there is anything left of Tolkien in this mess, it's no more than 10% or so.

There is nothing magical about the Elves anymore. Short hair, multiracial, no glow, no thoughtful dialogue... They're just like real people now.

Hobbits are multiracial, and don't look short anymore. They also look like real people... that are filthy and homeless.

Dwarves are multiracial. And there are white southerners too. Middle earth is now modern earth.

The fantasy is gone from this fantasy setting.

Too many plotlines that go nowhere. Costumes are cheap. Galadriel struggles with all the cowardly and weak men in the world. She is strong independent woman, don't need no man, and yet she is constantly put down by them.

Why do everyone detest elves? Where does this come from? Because casual racism is needed somehow?

With Elrond's plotline, the show appears to be pro industrialism. Maybe he'd like to burn down a forest to further his goal.
Everyone knew this would happen. It's still disappointing.

They have no idea what Tolkien was writing about, do they?

Letting aside the fact that this series disrespects and subverts Tolkiens works, the show lacks any soul and point.

I cannot identify with the quest of any character, I do not believe their motivations, I do nor care about their feelings, I am not anxious about their fate because there is no serious threat from no one, since Galadriel will save everyone simply because she is a woman (and hence the Chosen One and perfect in every imaginable aspect) without any effort, struggle, and specially without any moral self questioning (because, again, since she is a woman, everything she decides by herself is right, and everyone who does not follow her is wrong or will be proven wrong).

All of the characters are depicted as plane, one-dimensional souls. Everyone except Galadriel is dumb and inefficient (specially men) and do not have any clue about anything that is happening in the world, until they are enlightened by the perfect being that is She, the Chosen One.

CGI is perfect, with stunning views of cities and landscapes, but then when the action cuts to the actual place, there is no continuity, places seem small and lack the detail that was shown in the CGI pictures.

Yet the worst part is the dialog and the performance of the main characters. No word is said in a believable way, no compelling emotions are transmitted (nor in voice tone nor in facial expression). And the words themselves make no sense either. They are complicated and convoluted in a way that makes them difficult to grasp, until the moment in which you pay particular attention to the meaning and discover that they mean nothing, just a bunch of fancy words put together to appear grandiose and important, but without any rational or emotional meaning. Like a politician addresses a difficult question by pronouncing complicated words without saying anything, the characters in this ROP world speak the language of plain, self evident and uninteresting concepts in a way that mimics poetry and wisdom, but lack any of those.

Would all of this matter if the series wasn't about Lord of the rings? No, really not. I would just stop watching it in the exact moment I did with this episode and forget it.

Would I be writing this review if the series wasn't about Lord of the rings? No, definitely not.

But the show runners decided to disrespect and subvert Tolkien's works for their own profit and personal ambitions, and something must be done to (at least) send them a message.

They were also ruthless toward each other. Why convey this message? Needless boring long-winded exposition far too often. People saying and doing illogical things that people in their places would not say/do. People seemingly journeying far instantly without provisions or change of clothing (think Calibumblebore and his younger gay friend elf) going back and forth between elf-land and Casa Doodoo. Galadroolia is full of arrogance, hate, and spite. Ignorant of diplomacy. I thought she was over 1,000 years old? Tolkien's rolling in his grave. Absolutely worthless, woke propaganda. I hope it fails miserably.

Where to begin?
Ah, yes! Rings of Power are a piece of ****
All male characters are idiots and cowards. The script is full of cliches. The casting is miserable. The canon is not observed. And a lot of other bad things.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I miss those not so distant times when Tolkien was talked about and only very few of us were interested because of how deep and fantastic it was, seeing this production of good special effects and politically correct but hollow in its soul makes me sad, I hope I don't die of sadness like the elves Expand
